Cannot remap the arrow keys in some games?

Q: Cannot remap the arrow keys in some games?

I have recently bought a new PC. It is a TINY package and truly does the bizz when it comes to running the latest games. The only problem I seem to be having is that in random games when I go to change my keyboard settings, I try to use the arrow keys for movement but when I press any of them it comes up as though I am pressing Shift? I first noticed the problem in Doom 3 but as the game doesn't have so many controls I just used WSAD.
It did happen in a couple of other games but not so many worth crying about until I bought Half-Life 2 the other day and it was working fine with the arrow keys until I loaded it up tonight and loaded a saved game and to my horror every time I pressed an arrow key to move it was as if I was pressing shift at the same time? So now I have had to remap all of my keyboard controls to a set that I am not comfy with and cannot enjoy the game properly. I have tried changing keyboards but that isn't the answer so can anyone help? Or has anyone had the same issue? I am sitting here mortified as Half-Life 2 is sitting there staring at me but I just cannot play it with controls I cannot use properly .

Preferred Solution: Cannot remap the arrow keys in some games?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am used to using the hjkl keys as arrow keys on my home computer by using xmodmap to avoid moving from the home row. Is there any way on 'microsoft windows 8' to configure the hjkl keys to be used as arrow keys while a modifier key such as 'ctrl', 'alt' or 'meta' is held down?
The hjkl keys must still be able to function as normal when a modifier is not pressed.

Kind Regards,

I would use Autohotkey.

This would be greatly appreciated.

A:Remap CTRL + SHIFT + Arrow Key

I suspect the problem is in video card related crapware from manufacturer.
You can try the following (for ATI cards):
1. Backup current installed driver with DriverBackup!
to a folder ABC.
2. Turn off your internet connection (unplug cable or shutdown wireless)
3. Uninstall all ATI video drivers and related stuff (Catalyst Control Center, other staff with ATI in the name, etc) through Control Panel Programs and Features.
Instead manually install driver - Control Panel - System - Device manager. You video card will be with small yellow triangle on it, Right click - Properties- Driver tab - Update Driver - Browse my computer for driver software - Browse to ABC folder (see 1). Click Next button.

Please let us know if it worked for you.

You can download AutoHotkey_L here:

It's free and works on Windows XP and later. For what you describe this script should work:

percent := "%"
See the Autohotkey forums for help with scripts. You can either run the script directly or it may be more convenient to "compile" it into an exe that has the interpreter packed in. That way you can run it on systems that do not have AHK installed. It's great for making little tray hotkey utilities.

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hello,How can I get the home and end keys near the arrow keys on my keyboard without losing page up and page down?I'm a power screen reader user and use the home and end keys once every 5 minutes and I use the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. This means there is a whole lot of moving my hand from the arrow keys to the top of the keyboard. After a day of using my new laptop, my arm is starting to hurt from moving from the bottom to the top of the keyboard so much. What most manufacturers do is have fn+left be home and fn+right be end. They also have fn+up be page up and fn+down be page down. I would love this! Currently the page up and page down keys are right above the arrow keys. FN + page up and down being mapped to home and end would be great as well. I can't figure out how to map fn keystrokes using something like Auto Hot Key though. I would be OK with swapping the home and end keys with the page up and down keys, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Auto Hot Key does not work 100% of the time and I need this functionality 100% of the time. What method would be the best for me to get home and end by the arrow keys?

I absolutely never use the fn functions on F8, F9 and F10 on my Flex 2 which are changing between apps like ctrl+tab does, turning off the screen and changing two monitor modes. I'd like to remap these three keys to previous, play/pause and next so I can control my music like I can on my E530. I tried using SharpKeys which thinks all these keys would be the left windows key and KeyTweak which thinks they'd be some random letters. Does anyone have an idea how I could get the keys I want?

I am wondering if there is a way to remap the Windows shortcut keys. A specific example is the [Win][E] opens Windows Explorer but I would like that key to open a different file manager. I have tried different key tweaking programs and the ones I have tried do not allow changing a combination of keys such as the Win key together with another key. I would like something that would also work in Windows XP.

I would guess that Windows bans any changes to the Win key, as it is THEIR key. I would think it would not be a huge problem if you are willing to use anther key such as ctrl or alt.

Hi, I am running 32 bit Vista on an Acer aspire laptop. Acer have placed a key on my laptop called 'P'. When pressed it loads up the launch manager and says I can assign a function to it. What I really want is to have a mute key and so this would seem ideal. However, the mute function on my laptop is fn + f8 and I really want to change it to the P button. Can I copy the shortcut or code used in the current shortcut across or into a program that can then be linked to P?

I know it isn't that vital but I'd really love it if someone could help me. I am doing Computer Science at Manchester University and can't think of how to do it. VB perhaps?

I've got a Satellite Pro nb10t, good machine but key map seems really bad for me, [Home] and [End] keys are really far away from arrows, [Tab] key really narrow, really slowing office working.

How can I remap keys, for example to set [Home] to [Fn]+[Up], and {End] to [Fn]+[Down] ?

Found Microsoft RemapKey, but does not process FN key.

A:How to remap FN keys on Satellite Pro nb10t

Depending on the settings ?special function key mode? you could use the function key (F key) with or without pressing the additional FN button.

Details here

The FN key seems to be an special Toshiba feature and I don?t think that you could remap the FN button.

However, you could try to install the Remapkey.exe which is part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. This remapkey should allow you to change the button functionality.

Also the 3rd party tool like autohotkey would be good enough to do this job.

Hi guys,

I have an old keyboard but I like it and I don't want to change it.

This is it: Trust.com - Multimedia Keyboard KB-2100E

I want to remap the keys under the scroll to do something else.

They now have: Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on them. I want to put another key combination to each one.

I tried hotkeyp but that only replaces ctrl+v ( the current combination in place ) etc with the new combination and I can't use ctrl+v anymore. I need those hotkeys to be available all the time, so to start and stop hotkeyp is not an option.

Any answer that could help me would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello, I recently corrected an issue with our software where when run on Vista, the address fields would be displayed backwards. The software is written in a Visual RPG product, and the offending fields had the RightToLeft Property set to True. This should only have had an effect on the IO field if a language pack such as Japanese was installed - at least this is the case on XP, which displayed the address correctly. Changing the property to false corrected the backwards address. I am now finding that the arrow keys behave backwards - right arrow key goes left, left arrow key goes right. Even the space bar seems to misbehave in these fields. I have compared similar fileds on the same UI that do not exhibit this behaivor, and do not see any other differences. I have tried to delete the text, update the database, and re-add it to no avail. A search of this forum and Google have not revealed anything helpful. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thanks!

So, a few months ago, I got a brand new HP computer(with windows 8, if that helps). I've never had any problems, except for one time when it screwed up the time somehow, but anyways; The up and down arrow keys don't work. At all. They don't scroll, they don't move anything up and down, nothing. Not the normal arrow keys or the keys on the number pad. They've only done this for a little while, a few days maybe. On day they worked fine, the next, nothing. I don't really think it's the keyboard itself, because on the number pad, 8 and 2 work fine. just not as arrow keys. Yes, I tried pressing num lock. Nothing. Along with that, I attempted to see if the up and down keys worked with the on screen keyboard- Still nothing. The left and right keys work totally fine. I don't know what to do, and this it /really/ frustrating. Please help!

Recently, on a laptop, this happens suddenly without any warning usually after startup, when im inside a window and pressing my arrow keys to move and browse between files in that specific window it won't work.

Instead, it minimizes and maximizes the window, but im NOT using the "windows" key in combination with arrow keys (the keyboard shortcut for maximizing and minimizing windows), and still it minimizes and maximizes that window. So I can't brows my files with arrow keys.

This problem appeared several times after startups, but after i pressed several random keys like the windows key, and ctrl key and probably another keys the problem was gone. But the problem still can happen after a new startup of the computer.

Please help. How can this problem can be solved ?

Hello everyone..

The "e" key and arrow keys (not sure if there are others yet) are working intermittently. I either have to a) reboot the computer only to have it stop working again later, or b) wait for it to start working again on its own.

The odd thing about this is that it doesn't matter if i use the laptop keyboard, the wireless keyboard, or even the on screen keyboard. the e and arrow keys will stop working and then begin to work again on their own after about 30 minutes or so.

I have an HP dv-6 laptop and am using an HP wireless elite keyboard.

How can i solve this issue?

The left and right arrow keys on my VisionBook MDG laptop (XP operating system) are no longer working properly. After tapping multitudinous times they will start working again. But the problem has become so bad I now use the mouse to move my cursor, even it only needs to be moved a few spaces. For some reason the machine is not immediately recognizing input from these keys. The problem is intermittent: sometimes they work just fine.

I first suspected dirt under the keys, and shot compressed air under them. But this had no effect whatsoever.

The problem does not exist in the up/down keys, nor in the backspace or delete keys, nor any other keys on the keyboard.

The machine is only a year or so old, so if the hardware is breaking down or corrosion is an issue, I would be very surprised.

I sure would appreciate it if anyone could offer me a solution to this problem.

Thank you,

The arrow keys, all function keys, escape, caps, num and scroll lock, print screen, pause/break, insert, delete, home, end, page up, page down, the windows key, the application key, tab and backspace.

Whenever I press and hold any of these keys, one (or perhaps both) of my HDDs starts spinning in a sort of "drr, drr, drr" rythm and the system lags accordingly (the cursor is unaffected). Whatever is this about??

Have you checked the keyboardsettings?

You should find the options here ==> Configuration Screen/ Clock, language and country/ Language

Then chose for Options and check the keyboardlayout. A normal keyboard should be "US International" or "US".

You can also try to download the newest drivers from Logitech. Perhaps the old drivers are confusing Windows 8.
