Task Mgr-"Show processes from all users" resets itself

Q: Task Mgr-"Show processes from all users" resets itself

In XP if you check the box "show processes from all users" it's then static unless you uncheck it. It doesn't reset itself if you close Task Mgr and /or reboot.

Under Build 7100 it does reset itself. If I close TM it resets. Same if I reboot while TM is open or closed.

Is there a way to make it permanent? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Task Mgr-"Show processes from all users" resets itself

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Michael, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can create right click on the C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe file and click on Send To and Desktop (create shortcut).

Next right click on the shortcut, and click on Properties, Shortcut tab, Advanced button, check Run as administrator, click on OK, and OK.

When you check "show processes from all users" with this shortcut, it will not reset on you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is there a way to force Task Manager to open with the "Show processes from all users" option enabled?

I created a shortcut and added "/1" (without quotes) in the property target line but it did not work. (I know, one click will accomplish this but I just like to tweak!)

Disregard.

Found Brink's post of 05-18-2009 on same subject. Followed his directions and worked like a charm.

Thanks Brink !

Hello Manuel,

In addition, you could use the shortcut below to have this. The "Show processes from all users" option just runs Task Manager as elevated (Run as administrator).

I just noticed when I try to show processes for all users in task manager, UAC prompts me, I push OK and task manager disappears. If I try it again or maybe the third time, it works. Anybody heard of this. I keep Avast up to date, run Spybot and Malwarebytes every 3-4 days. I don't think it's a virus or malware thing. Any thoughts?

I am still having the same problem. I hate to bring this back again but does anyone else have this problem? To "show processes for all users" it works on the 3rd try. It is getting annoying. Even if you don't know how to fix it, do you have the same problem?

We are working on a new W7 image in our company. The first tests are done but there are still some questions left, one of them is from our support guys.

Is it possible to make the button "Show processes from all users" available to all users? If you click on the button now (normal users) there is nothing happing.
If you log in with a admin account this is working.

A work around is to run this from C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe as admin and you can see all processes.

But the questions is, is it possible to make this button available for all users with GPO settings?

So basically I opened up my task manager a moment ago, and found it flooded with running processes. I'd had experience before with Poweliks and used a program to remove that on two separate occasions. This time around the program didn't detect it. So I started running Malware Bytes and Norton, both of which found malware and removed them. But the same issue of the heavily loaded task manager continued.

Then I found that I had "Show processes from all users" checked on, and checking it off had my task manager processes significantly reduced in number.

Then I remember an incident earlier today in which a program crashed, forcing me to navigate the task manager with my keyboard only to shut off the program. I had been rather sloppy in my attempt to close it and may have accidentally clicked "Show processes from all users" on.

So this feels like a dumb question so I ask, is it normal and was this the case? Is 66 processes for all users normal?

What is the list of appropriate "Processes" that should be running in my "Windows Task Management" window? I am somewhat plauged by redirect issue while visiting some Web sites. A:Appropriate "Processes" running in "Task Manager"?

There are thousands of appropriate processes that could be running in task manager. The first thing I would do is see if anything is running that you don't recognize. We can help you with those. If you don't recognize most of it, then I would recommend that you post an HJT log and let us have a look.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Here's a TOTAL stumper: the "Users" tab is ALWAYS showing in Windows Task Manager on my system...

Background:
I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook running Windows XP Home Edition (SP3).
The OS and all software are up to date. All Microsoft Updates installed.
All windows services are set to their default settings.
I am the only user (only one user account on this computer).
I have Fast User Switching DISABLED.
If it matters (that darned Google...) I have Microsoft .NET Framework

So here is the problem/question...

If I open my Windows Task Manager I see the normal tabs:

BUT I also see the Users tab.
From what I understand after a hearty session of Googling, the Users tab is ONLY supposed to be present when Fast User Switching is enabled.

I have experimented with enabling/disabling Fast User Switching, and checked/unchecked "Use the Welcome Screen". The system restarts, shutdowns, logoffs and logons work exactly as expected for each configuration.

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

I have Windows 7 Home Pro installed on my laptop, and I'm one of those people that likes to keep my Start Menu folder OCD-tidy.

In W7 (as I believe it was in Vista) there are two folders that handle the program shortcuts for the Start Menu. There's a user-specific one (for programs only that user can use) and the all-users one (for programs everyone can use).

C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'm the only user on my laptop, so I'd like to just consolidate these two folders into one to make it easier for me to sort and keep track of. Is there any reason not to just drag-and-drop stuff from one to the other? Is there one that I should use in preference to the other (should I keep everything in the "user" folder or the "all-users" folder?

I'm pretty sure I just did this without any problem in Vista, but I wanted to make sure so I don't mess anything up as I'm new to W7.

Thanks,

A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

I came across this error in the Task Scheduler when checking scheduled task and it happened as soon as the application was opened so I did a little searching and found out the first occurrence was due to the Defrag schedule and found a solution for that here :

So now that took care of that error and decided to check a few more folders and sure enough I located another error of the same having to do with the AppID folder in the TaskScheduler Windows folder and it seems as though the PolicyConverter entry is missing from the task scheduler in this folder and more than likely from the Reg. I have not done a search there yet but it is located in the Windows Task folder system files . I will cut to the quick here and ask shouldn't I be able to import export that entry from a system Reg that has the entry to the system that does not have the entry and reboot and go back into the TaskScheduler to see if the entry is there now ? Of course I would first back up the system Reg or probably just do a complete back up first the continue .

I have attached some more Images for anyone's ? if need be .

I preformed sfc /scannow more than once with no results .

When I download or move into that "Music" directory the directory I moved has a lock icon on it.

In order to get rid of the icon, I need to add "Authenticated Users" to the list of groups, and then I need to take ownership of the directory under my account in order to to do anything.

If this directory is in my download directory, it's fine...but as soon as I move it there the above situation arises.

Hello,

I have basic knowledge of the command terminal, in that I only know how to navigate through directories. Currently I am trying to execute the following:

java ?jar MRTBatch.jar ?d input_directory ?p parameter_directory\input_parameter_file ?o parameter_file_directory

I have already navigated to the correct directory to make use of the MRTBatch.jar tool, however the problem arises with my user inputs, which are of the form "C:\Users\My Name\Rest of path". I keep getting the error:

ERROR: Could not find directory "C:\Users\My Name".

When navigating directories earlier I always had to go find the file I wanted, copy its path location, paste it into the command terminal, and then erase the "C:\" portion (so it became cd\Users\My Name\Rest of path) for it to work. So when I got this error I have tried multiple edits for it to recognize the paths. Could it be as simple as switching the direction of the slashes? I would have thought the complete path name would always be best. Is it because I'm already burrowed down so far that it cant seem to recognize any file further back?

Here are the directions I am following, pg 40 titles "Automated Batch Processing": https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/sites/default/files/public/mrt41_usermanual_032811.pdf
My goal is to mosaic a bunch of satellite imagery using the MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT).

Thank you for the help!

A:Command Prompt Error: "Cannot find directory "C:\Users\..."

Web site URLs use the forward slash / while path statements in the OS use the backslash \.

Your problem just may be that it needs to start from the root of the drive or C:\. If it starts at the standard Command Prompt it will already be looking below/inside C:\Users\your name\.

I usually use it by pinning my frequently use folder,

so when I right click, the list of "pinned program (folder)" will be listed out, easy for me to access them in a click.

and one day, all the pinned programs gone.

so I attempted to "repin" all vanish folders, but even if I click to pin them, they just wont show up in the "pinned program" list.

the worst part, I right clicked, the only option is UNPIN THIS PROGRAM FROM TASK BAR where that program was not pinned in the first place (didnt show up in pinned list) , how come only this option pop out?

please help , thanks.

Hi all

System: ASUS Laptop N53SV i7-2630qm, Nvidia GT 540M, 8GB RAM, Win Home Premium (originally an OA key...)

Problems: dvd drive reads all discs as blank (not a massive issue), Nvidia card is not recognised at all (not even in device manager, or the windows rating tabs for system specs so I can not install drivers or nvidia control panel...again not a massive issue...) the big problem is my laptop freezes and becomes unresponsive forcing me to press and hold the power button to shutdown quite regularly at times, however I can sometimes get a few to several hours use no issues.

I have formatted several times lately but I still have the problem >_<""

Downloaded and installed drivers from ASUS as I can't use discs. Windows Updates updated.

It doesn't happen when I'm doing anything in particular, it seems quite random.

Firefox will become unresponsive but I can not close it or any tabs by clicking on the red cross.

Programs like Steam, Origin, VLC will appear to work but clicking any links or games results in no response and again can not be closed by navigating menus or red cross.

Any audio either by itunes or streaming will continue playing. Video will freeze but it's audio plays on.

I can NOT ctrl+alt+del as it gives me a black screen with an error msg saying to press esc to close things if they don't respond or power down by pressing and holding the power button.

That is my only method of "solving" this p... Read more

I just installed Windows 7 (Pro 64bit) on my desktop and ran W.E.T. to transfer my files from my Vista installation. The files have maintained their modified date/timestamp, but the folders' modified-date have all been reset to the current date (actually not quite all of them - empty folders have retained their original date - ?!?)

This would be a serious problem for me as I almost always sort folders by modified date to determine which ones are newest and most relevant. Is there a way to make Easy Transfer keep the original date on folders as well as files?

thanks for any help you can offer...

A:"easy transfer" resets folder modified date

Welcome
Have not heard that one before.

Just guessing,now.
Go to a folder
Right click
Restore previous version

Make sure the original is backed up, just in case
Dont know of a way to make Easy Transfer change behaviour. Be careful with easy transfer, it has been known not to be reliable. Be sure you back up before transfers.
Good Luck

Hey guys I recently re installed win 7 home premium and a few days later when logging it said preparing desktop, as if it was the first time Ih ad logged in. When it finally logged in my desktop seemed to have been reset, it only had recycle bin, itunes (which had to reinstall after clicking it) firefox and thunderbird and I had to go to program files to find the programs I had and pictures etc weren't in the my pictures folder.

Put everything back in place and now it's happened again right now but this time noticed the bubble on bottom of screen and to check event log. The event viewer says Event 5038 Microsoft Security Auditing and also says Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. May I know is it possible to show domain user's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as owner in print queue? Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

This past March I had a run in with identity theft and I'm still trying to resolve the issue over 6 months later. I often use ebay/paypal and buy things from reputable, secure online shops that are overseas (I only use 2 or 3 and have been dealing with them for 3-4 years each). Recently I started selling a lot of possessions on ebay and someone from China bought something cheap from me and proceeded to try and spoof and harrass me several times in the past two weeks or so. I know that spoofing requires you to actually enter information into the fake site that's set up, but after having info stolen once, I was kinda paranoid about other methods that I might not know of, or know less about, stealing info that I submit to legit sites. I had Outlook Express open and the scammer sent me another e-mail, which I promptly deleted, but immediately after I closed Outlook I got a "Data Execution Prevention" box, and I've only ever gotten it once before that. This definitely freaked me out. So I decided to try out Zonealarm Force Field and upgrade my Zonealarm to the Security Suite "pay" version. Force Field seemed to work okay, but whenever I added the Suite later, things kinda got wonky. First off, Roboform started giving me an error about not being able to attach to my browser, even though it still worked. Also, and this is the big issue, even after downgrading back to ZA Free (in safe mode of course), whenever I open anything that accesses the internet for the fir... Read more

A:Explorer crashes/"resets" one time right after startup

Hello, I ran into a PC with a similar problem: Internet Explorer crashed on startup ALWAYS. I removed a program called "Search Assistant" and the problem was solved. I don't know if this is the case with your PC, but I noticed that you have

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

What changes when I press the "End Process" button besides the obvious stopping of the process, or likewise if I press "End Process Tree".
The next obvious question is, what is the relationship between a process and a process tree?
(I tried to take a screenshot of the context menu which contains the choices "End Process Tree" and "End Process Tree", but the menu disappears the moment I try to click on anything else.)
Background:
I drive a laptop with only a single-core processor and Win 7.  It's so overburdened that, even if I wanted to upgrade to Win 10 or better, I don't have the horsepower to do that, either.
I spend hours trying to get things done, when the CPU Usage reading is at a consistent 100% for several minutes at a time.  There are moments of desperation when I end one of the CPU hogs -- a browser... anti-browser/security package...  most frequently
one/more of the svchost.exe pieces...  by "End Process".  Otherwise I never get the point of meaningful action.  And in these circumstances, it takes even longer if I save file, shut down apps, restart, and bring up everything!
Thus this question!
Thanks.

Hello Fellow 7 users,

I have just switched OS to Windows 7, and i am impressed so far.

I want to backup my data on an external harddrive. I would like to use the function ROBOCOPY in the command windows because then i don't have to third party program running all the time. But the copying stops at a folder that it cannot access. The folder is "c:\Users\"MyUser"\Documents\My Music", but the folder doesn't exist in the directory. I have checked the folder with explorer and commando prompt, but its not there.

I have made a screenshot of the failure:

I am using the following command:

REM Starting Syncronizing with external harddrive
cd %0\..\
robocopy "C:\Users\Halberg\Documents" "Backup\Documents" /MIR /ETA

I hope you can help me with this problem.

/Omorashi

A:ROBOCOPY and not existing folder "c:\Users\"MyUser"\Doc

My Music is not under Documents folder. It's in C:\Users\Halberg\My Music.
The one you see is for retro-compatibility. Exclude it for copying.

whenever i open task scheduler I keep getting the message

Error: selected task (o) no longer exists. To see the current tasks click refresh.

even after repeated clicking refresh the same message is displayed.

also on both task status and active tasks it says Reading data failed

wats happening?

A:Task scheduler (win7) fails to read data. Error: "selected task (o) no longer exits"

Can you not remove (o) from the scheduled task list?

If not then it might be that Task Scheduler has been corrupted by something, not sure how task scheduler is stored, but in system32 there is 3 files (taskschd.dll, taskschd.exe, TaskSchdPS.dll) that are all related to Task Scheduler, but not sure if any of them could be the cause of this issue.

Here's my problem: Internet Explorer 7 constantly resets the home page to "about:blank".

I know, it's a classic. I've scrubbed my system of everything that looks suspicious to my layman's eye, but the problem remains in IE7. Firefox works fine.

I've carefully followed your "Five Step Process". The results of the Deckard's System Scanner ("main.txt") are posted below, with the "extra.txt" file appended as instructed.

Panda Active Scan gave my PC a clean bill of health - nothing suspicious was found - but it didn't offer me a "See Report" button, only a "Scan Again" button, so I can't include its report.

My PC is a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP (Service Pack 2) with Norton Internet Security (fat lot of good that did me!).

Anything you could do to help resolve this infuriating problem would be massively appreciated! Thank you. :)

best,

Andy
