DSL Disconnects If Internet Not Actively Used

Q: DSL Disconnects If Internet Not Actively Used

I've got AT&T DSL, which is on all the time. Nevertheless, after turning on the computer for the day, if I don't actively use the Internet for a while (about a half hour), I lose my connection. In order to reconnect I've had to restart the computer. What program fluke may be causing the computer to disconnect like this? What can I do to ensure that I stay connected? AT&T says it's not caused by them, and I've verified this to be true. I've contacted Compaq, but the guy in India has no solution. I've run Norton virus scan, Spybot, and Spysweeper, all of which indicate that I'm not infected with any malware. My operating system is: XP updated with Service Pack 2 and all subsequent critical updates.

Preferred Solution: DSL Disconnects If Internet Not Actively Used

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an HP Pavilion 550-114a. On the back of the tower I have 2 vidio outputs, a VGA and a DVI. I would like to be able to use 2 monitors as well as a projector. The projector and the second monitor would be mirrored. I am using the VGA port for the first monitor and works. If I use a DVI cable for the second monitor, only the second monitor, it works well. Or if I put the DVI cable to the projector, that works well. But if I put an active splitter after the DVI output on the tower to both the projector and the second monitor, it will not work. I am unable to recieve a signal to either one or the other. I will receive a signal to one, but not the other.  This is for my church and need help understanding what I am doing wrong. Thank you for your help.

Hello, so here I am after I upgraded my PSU and GPU. I took some recommendations from people on here, purchased the parts, and installed them into my computer myself.

Fast forward a month and I upgraded to windows 7 from XP. Now every once in a while when I am not actively using my computer, say I leave it on while I use my Xbox or go and do something else and leave it on, I'll come back to see it at the login screen and I'll log in and it'll say it recovered from and unexpected restart. I don't normally leave my computer on when I'm not using it or near it. So it'll do this after about 20-30 minutes of sitting Idle would be my guess. Which come to think of it is when my screensaver is running, which is a custom one I got from the internet featuring the matrix code falling down the screen. Damn, could that be it?

Anyway it was never a problem until yesterday when it restarted itself and all my programs in the Programs(x86) were wiped out. I.E. the folders are there but they are completely empty.

Sorry for this being so long just trying to be thorough, here is my specs:

Windows 7
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00 GHz
4Gb Corsair RAM
HIS Radeon HD 5770
750 Watt Corsair PSU
Gigabyte Motherboard

Anything else just ask. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Also rarely when I hit the power button to turn on my computer when it's off it'll make three rapid beeps and the display won't come on but pressing the power button to shut it ... Read more

Hi friends,
I have this very peculiar problem in Windows 7 Ultimate. I am using a HP Pavillion dv2762tx laptop, 3 gb RAM, Core 2 duo 1.83 Ghz processor.
The problem is, while i am actively using the laptop, it goes into hibernation by itself. This happens very often. In a typical day, atleast 15-20 times. I tried changing all the power options available and related to this, but there is no use. I even tried diabling the Hibernate option. This results in shutting down of windows, that too during active usage.
I thought this might be due to system heating, and tried to provide adequate ventilation to the bottom portion of the laptop. Still, i face the same issue. Please note that, this happens during active usage of the laptop. Even as I was typing this post, the laptop went on hibernation once.
I even though this might be due to non-usage of hard disk, and tried to play songs in the background while working. But still, i am facing the same issue. But while i watch movies on this laptop, i dont face this issue. This is very peculiar and i am not sure what to do. Pls help.
Thanks & Regards,

Hey, I've got a rather disturbing virus lodged in my system. At first it looked like just another one of those fake Spyware programs but soon after I started taking steps to remove it, I was inundated with multiple infections as well as a desktop hijack that changed my background to some weird message in broken english about how spyware will "break my life". Soon after all of my anti-spyware and virus programs shut down, Explorer crashed and anytime I attempted to access folders on my computer it would crash again. I'm unable to access the control panel, start menu, task manager, command prompt or any web browsers. ComboFix spontaneously deleted itself (though I suspect it was the virus that nailed it). Safe Mode causes a system crash. The only thing I seem to be allowed to do is stare at the fake spyware program while it throws ads at me. Is there anything I can do short of trying to salvage what data I can and starting over?

So far I've been able to log in and operate on the computer's Guest Account without too many issues, but I can't seem to run any anti-spyware programs from it. I've noticed in the task manager several processes have been duplicated which I assume are part of the infected files with process names such as "taskmgr .exe" or "AAWService .exe", they all have a space between the name and the file extension. I've also located a number of files created today in my system32 folder that I can't delete... Read more

When I would be working on something in 3DS max and I'd go into the material editor, for a moment it would be working fine, but then it would freeze. When I would alt-tab and jump back into 3DS max, it would respond for a moment before freezing again. Rebooting would fix this temporarily before it started to happen again, but then it started to happen with other applications, including my games. The games would freeze, and when I alt tabbed, it would start to run, and immediately freeze if i even moused over it with task manager on top. I did virus scans and found 3 threats before stopping the scan at 70% or so, but it happened again, and before I do another scan, I don't know where I should search, or where the problem is coming from.

Hi All,

I have been getting BSODs for a while now. Was trying to figure it out myself but I am at wits end. The attached file has many dump files attached. They seem to each have different causes. I tried removing one app(Replay) but then I started getting NTFS.sys errors. If I launch Vuze and leave the computer on over night all is well. Once I start using it it will BSOD within 30 minutes.

Initially, one of my DIMMs gave me 70k errors on Mem check so at first I thought it was that. I still have the 2 of the 4 DIMMs. I ran exhaustive HDD tests and repairs.

Lastly, I dual boot. So I boot off of GRUB and not MBR. I think it is worth noting that I don't have issues running Linux.

Hello, I just got a new computer and I'm having internet problems. I used to use an old XP desktop with direct connection and it stayed connected, used my vista laptop with direct connection and it stayed connected, and now with my new W7 desktop the internet does not stay connected. It just disconnects and reconnects in a split second. This interferes while I'm playing games (3 different games), it'll tell me I have lost connection, and when I check my internet connection it says I'm connected. Sometimes I see the little internet connection icon on the bottom say X then a little loading circle then back online in a second. It interferes when I'm streaming also. It happens every 10-30 min or so and it gets REALLY annoying. Anybody have similar problems? Any way to fix?

First welcome to TSF!!!

Next I would try a couple of things. Start off with a power cycle of your equipment, and see if that helps. Next you would need to narrow it down to what is causing the problem. Does it only happen when you are using chrome or does it happen with other browsers, more to the point does it happen with other programs that use the internet like email, instant messaging, etc. Are you running any programs that allow you to torrent, that can cause issues with your connection.

When I turn on the Internet (I have a modem), it works fine until I turn other programs on then the Internet basically turns off, but the computer says I'm still connected to the Internet. Why is this doing this and why is the Internet turning off?

If I'm downloading something off the Internet say a game demo or a game update the Internet would just turn off like I said before and then I would have to disconnect and then reconnect and try redownloading and sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't.

I found a pattern or it's just coincidence, but when the downloading box isn't the main thing selected for a while the Internet turns off. Someone please help and don't tell me to ask my ISP he's the other word for donkey.

Hi All
I have been having internet disconnects every since I have had VISTA. It is the same that used to occur in WIN ME & 98. It happens when you spend a long time surfing on one web site. There was a fix for this problem then and I have forgotten it. It is not my server as I have another computer with WIN 98SE and it does not happen. I have to cycle my DSL modem off & on to reconnect. I am connected through a router to a second computer and to the modem and the second computer stays connected. The internet icon (lower right display) will indicate local only is connected.

A:Internet Disconnects

If you're using a laptop or server, the network card may be configured to go into power saving mode releasing the IP address after a set amount of time of non-activity.

Which version of Windows Vista are you using? Vista is known to have plenty of networking issues on it's own so it may be worth searching Microsoft's KB (Knowledge Base) at www.microsoft.com if you're familiar with it.

Also your computer system mentions a Dell E-520 which appears to be a standard desktop PC, would you be able to confirm this?

Finally, if you could post the results of an "ipconfig /all" while the network is connected and then when it becomes unavailable, this would help troubleshoot the problem.

hi Boltonsquad I have a similar sounding problem.
My connection to the network is reported as excellent but randomly the actual download speed drops away to nothing.
Does yours "mend " itself after a short while and start working again...or is yours off for good. I find rebooting the laptop resolves it faster than waiting for it to do it itself...until it does it again(not good).
I use a belkin router (number can be supplied when I get home if needed) ..maybe thats the common?

Hi theriffs1

I have Verizon DSL also, I was receiving the Pop up ballon: An network cable has been unplugged about every hour.

I would need to physically reseat the ethernet cable, (are you using an ethernet connection or a USB connection?), finally I purchased a new ethernet cable and that problem went away.

I did call Verizon, they have a free upgrade from 1.5mb/368kbps to 3.0mb/768kbps, it was offered to me without my asking.

Have you tried an ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew from a command window?

Start > Run
key in:
cmd /k ipconfig
Click: Enter
The information appearing will show you what your IP address is, and how long before it expires.
My IP address renews itself every 15 minutes.

At a command prompt in the same command window key in:
Then key in:
Your IP address should be renewed.

Have you had any viruses that may have corrupted your Winsock?

Let us know if this makes a difference or not, and if you don't have the upgrade yet, call Verizon and get it!

Hi, You might have another wifi signal very close to your house that is on 'your' channel, it happens.
You can only move your channel to one of three different frequencies, that is the lowest, the middle or the highest one. So say your current channel is 6, there is no point going to 7, it's still too close.
If the 'other' problem wifi channel near you is say '1' then you should try to go to the other end of the range.
You change your WiFi channel in your router, then your laptop will find it.
You don't need a website to do that, it's between your laptop and your router.
You make the changes through any web browser, and the details will probably be on the label of your router.
But this might not the problem, although it's a fairly easy one to 'fix' if it is.

Hey guys,

As soon as I connect my VPN it disconnects the internet. I'm using a desktop with windows 7, connected to wifi via a Netgear 4600 router. I have two internet connections, one of which is not connected to the router, both connections are affected. Used to work fine and I don't think I have done anything that would cause this. I already looked online and didn't find anything that was helpful.

Any suggestions?

I have a Compaq Presario-AMD Athlon 64-3500+-512mb-200gb. Running windows xp sp3, updated and malware clean. I am stuck with dialup connection until [email protected] upgrades our area. I sometimes leave my pc running a download all night. I usually use orbit downloader but some downloads work better with no manager. Since I reinstalled windows my connection gets disconnected at at different times and redials the connection, but only at night when I leave it downloading a large file. In internet connection I have checked "never dial a connection". It is just an annoyance but I would like to fix it. Any help will be appreciated. I forgot to say that I use IE7 and have tried connection keeper ( with same results). Tried firefox several times but it was slower than IE on my pc. Thanks again. Lots of good advice on this site.

I am having an issue with frequent media disconnects. Upon booting my system, browsers do not connect to the internet. A restart fixes the problem for a while and the system eventually disconnects again. I have hardwired cable and supplier provided cable modem. The system says I am connected but browsers don't function until a soft restart. My PC is for personal use and is owned by me. I have recently added Spybot AV and previously used Windows Defender. McAfee in the distant past. None of them show much and if they do and the item is fixed, I still experience the same media disconnects.

So heres the deal.
Ive recently upgraded from windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64bit, this ofcourse means Ive formatted my harddrives and made a clean install.
But now Ive realised, that whenever I try to download a large file which takes several minutes, my computer will disconnect from the router and I have to let windows do its thing and it says its "Resetting Network card" After this I have to reboot the PC and yet again let windows do its thing where it tells me to let it reactivate my network card. When Ive done this Ill be connected to the internet again. Ive tried to let my PC run for several hours just to make sure its not random dc's but within 5 mins of me starting a download it dc's. I can browse around just fine and have tried countless of different solutions around the web and none have helped so far. Now I beg you to give me Every single possible solution that you guys can think of. Keep in mind that I have another PC running vista connected to the router and that one works just fine, and I never had this problem on XP.
Also please keep in mind that Im not all that techie when it comes to router settings and such, so keep it simple for the sake of my brain not overheating!

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a network driver problem but I don't see any network driver downloads fro Windows 7 X86 or X64 on the ASUS site for the Gigabit network device.

As a test, remove the router from the setup and connect directly to the broadband modem. Try a download and see what happens. If it fails the same way then the router is definitely involved. If it doesn't fail then try swapping the port and cable the router is connected to with the one currently in use by the Vista computer then try the test again.

If it works then it is either the Ethernet cable or some problem with that specific port on the router. If it doesn't make any difference, then try deleting the Gigabit network device from Device Manager as follows:

Press WinKey+R to open a Run box.
Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter
Expand Network Adapters
Right click on the Gigabit device and select Uninstall
Reboot and wait while Windows 7 rediscovers the device and reloads the driver, see if that helps.

My internet randomly disconnects for half a second. For instance, most of the time I have ventrilo and mIRC open, and sometimes (a lot of the time) an online game (TF2, CS etc) My internet will disconnect me from all of them at the same time, then I try to get back it and it lets me, so it seems its only disconnecting for like 1 second, then its back on.

Hello and thank you,
It seems that every three or four hours our computer will just lose all connection, even the modem shows we don't have one. We have had four cox repairmen come, and all claimed they had fixed a simple problem. They didn't. So whenever this happens all we can do is wait or repeatedly unplug and plug stuff. Obviously we have no clue what is going one. Can somebody help.

A Javascript zero-day vulnerability affecting the Mozilla Firefox web browser is currently being actively exploited against The Onion Router (TOR) anonymising network users by unknown attackers.
The exploit causes memory corruption and executes attack code that would find a TOR user's real IP address and network adapter MAC identifier, and relay it back to a server in France.
A representative of Mozilla said officials are aware of the vulnerability and are working on a fix. Until a patch is available, Firefox users should use an alternate browser whenever possible, or they should at the very least disable JavaScript on as many sites as possible. People should avoid relying on Tor in cases where deanonymizing attacks could pose a significant threat.

I put Windows 7 Pro 64bit on my computer about 2 weeks ago and I'm using a Belkin wireless USB adaptor to connect to the Internet.
I am connecting via Windows and NOT a 3rd party utility.

Some days the wireless connection is solid, but the majority of the time, the wireless drops and I have to reconnect it to the network.
This can happen once or several times during the day and it's pretty annoying, especially when playing games.

The router is in the next room and the signal strength is full.
When using this adaptor on XP Pro with the Belkin utility, I never had any wireless drops and the connection was solid all the time.

I've tried:
-Updating the USB adaptor drivers, but they're already up to date
-Setting the WLAN AutoConfig startup type to Manual and starting the service myself, but the disconnects still happen
-Switching power management off on the adaptor, disconnects still happen

Just wondering if there are any other suggestions in order to stop the wireless disconnecting.
Can't really run a cable but I am considering formatting back to XP which I don't really want to do.

You might want to go into your router settings and change to a different wifi channel. Windows 7 seems to be more sensitive to channel cross over problems than XP was.

You can also use this Wi-Fi scanner to look for unused channels in your area.

Hello!Several days ago I started experiencing these weird, frequent disconnects. They last for 15 seconds up to a minute and they seem to be occurring randomly, perhaps 2-3 times per hour. I first put the blame on the router, but even after connecting my computer directly to the modem the problems persisted. Next my suspicions were aimed at my ISP, but there seemed to be no faults or maintenance work being done over there, so I connected another of my computers to the modem instead and to my surprise everything was working and the disconnects had disappeared. After ~3 hours I connected internet to my usual computer instead, and internet started disconnecting again. So obviously my computer is the culprit, but I've scanned it with many anti-virus programs and nothing turns up. I'm at a loss here - can someone help me out? Please refrain from asking for help from other members or staff until the HJT Team has checked your posted log. The HJT Team work very hard to investigate a unique solution to your problem and you will receive individual expert assistance. This takes time and effort so we ask you to please be patient while waiting for assistance and NOT to make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member. Any modifications you make on your own can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, following advice outside of that post may cause confusion for the team member assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. The HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. If you followed any other advice already, please ensure you inform the HJT Team Helper when they respond to assist you with your log. Hi everyone, for the past few weeks whenever I access the internet, whether or not directly connected to my modem, or with a router, I experience random disconnects, and sometimes it will show a "cable disconnected" message for a few seconds, then go away. At other times, I need to disable the internet and reconnect it, then wait a minute to get it to work again. This happens sometimes every 5 minutes to once every hour.

I am on an ADSL connection, ISP is Telus, using a D-Link DSL-300G ADSL Modem.

I think it could be too old for use, as it is always very hot in temperature, and probably about 2-3 years old now. I would really appriciate help on this, it sucks when I play online games and get dropped every game. If anyone can think of info that might help diagnose the problem, just ask and i'll provide.

A:Random internet disconnects, Please help!

Sounds like you have modem or ISP issues. It could also be a failing NIC in your machine, and a long shot would be the cable.

My Internet connection can go for days with no problem and then for half a day will disconnect every few minutes. The strange thing is that all I have to do to get it back is to disconnect the cable from my computer and reconnect it and in seconds I have Internet again. My internet provider cannot find a problem with the connection and all assume it has something to do with the modem or router but I cannot find any problem with them.

We have a router with 2 computers connected to it and we have a static IP.

I have no 3rd party firewalls and like I said, most of the week this doesn't happen.

I have read all kinds of solutions and have tried them all (installing router\modem\windows updates, etc...)

Instead of trying to figure out what the cause is, since my solution is taking out the cable and putting it back, thus forcing a reconnection, I wanted to ask if you know of any software that would monitor my internet connection and when it sees that it got disconnected, it would force a restart of the connection (like what I do manually by taking the cable in and out.)

A:Internet disconnects for no reason

Well, instead of manually taking the cable in and out, go into command promt (Start -> "cmd") and type "ipconfig /renew".

Have you tried scanning for viruses? In one case I had, an infected computer was attempting to attack other computers on the network, disconnecting them from the internet. Use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or SUPER Antispyware.

So I have Windows 7 and I am connected to a Net gear router with another computer. I constantly (Every Hour) have to reset my modem and router (Unplug It) because it simply stops working. (I get the little triangle with the "!" over the "computer" in the bottom left hand corner. As soon as I reset it, it will be good again for a bit but usually not more than an hour. I really want this fixed because I play a lot of video games, and not only that my router is upstairs, so I have to run up every time to reset it and its great exercise but its very annoying.
