Lenovo ThinkPad T480 - keyboard gets warm

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad T480 - keyboard gets warm

Hi All, My '21 days old' ThinkPad T480 - Top of the line machine warms up at the top-left section of the keyboard, just above the vents! I'm not sure what needs to be done. I raised a complain with the Lenovo Support and the technician who paid a visit today, apparently was ready to replace the motherboard, because he thought that I reported a heating issue with my machine. But that wasn't the case. I'm surprised though that they were ready to replace my machine with a new mother board, without knowing the exact issue. Any ways, so all he did was replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, I was okay with that, as I read in many forums that replacing the thermal paste helped reduce the heating issues. Its only now that I'm starting to realize, that I don't think its more of a heating issue, but a SERIOUS design flaw in T480 machines. The top-left edge portion of the keyboard that which is just above the vents, seems to start warming up within 30 mins of NORMAL usage. I don't see the fan doing its job either, may be its suppose to speed up at very high temps, irrespective, what I think is the problem is that the fan case that is connected to the vents, for some reason the casing touches the vents plastic body and that's transferring the warmness up to the place where ones left palm would naturally rest while typing. It warms up to the extent that I can feel its not comfortable for me to type anymore. I've to constantly keep taking my left hand out and give it a break from the continues touch!!! Any help is highly appreciate. I LOVE THE MACHINE, but this issue is starting me to HATE it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yesterday, I accidently droped just little water on the keyboard. It remained working for a while before the whole keyboard froze and stopped working at all, the strange thing was the beeping that the laptop keeps doing on one second interval, it does not stop beeping unless you press the shut down. The strange thing is that the laptop all working except the keyboard, and this beeping every second that never stops. It is like a blood rate device voice that you hear at the ICU if you are sitting beside a patient. My question is there a way to avoid replacing the keyboard as it seems it is a keyboard issue if I am not wrong? Or should I try to open it and dry it in some way then connect it again and see if this beeps goes and if the keyboard returns to life again? Thank you for the help.

According to https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/docksSearch/ the Lenovo T480 20L6 laptop is compatible with the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station. However the docking station uses an entirely different power supply than the laptop (the old blocky rectangular one vs the newer mini rounded rectangle). The laptop itself fits on the docking station, but does not charge despite the docking station being plugged in. There are two connector slots on the dock that appear to be for the newer power supply, however neither of those provide power either. Is the docking station incorrectly listed as compatible when it really isn't, is there a hardware malfunction, or something else entirely?

My laptop is Thinkpad T480, core i 7, 32GB RAM with Nvidia and 1 TB SSD. Initially I have Dolby Digital Advanced Audio(DDAA) Profile Editor as desktop short-cut ( the editor has a graphic equalizer which can be edited). But after the windows Update, the DDAA profile editor has been disspaeared. I uninstall the audio driver, restart and then again install Audio driver from Lenovo website but the editor did not appear. Even in the C drive , I tried to retrieve but failed. Then I go to Lenovo VANTAGE app and found this. Here, the mode can be changed but there is no graphical equalizer like DDAA editor. What's is the solution of this problem?

Cannot get the display connect to the laptop through the included USB-C cable. Tried using both available ports, and through a docking. Windows detects that something is connect, but says ?Display connection might be limited?. The display doesn't appear in device manager, only the USB hub on the display.  Laptop is updated with latest windows. Also tried updating the thunderbolt 3 firmware. DisplayPort through DP cable on dock works fine.

Hi, I just purchased a new T480 Thinkpad for work, which is a great computer. Unfortunatly the model I have does not have the backlit keyboard. The specific model I have is a 20L5000WUS. On the Lenovo support I do not see any option in the replacement parts for a backlit keayboard. If I purchase a backlit keyboard for a different T480 sub-model, will it work? Thanks,Nic

Within weeks of getting the tablet the trackpad of thinkpad keyboard (comes with the tablet) started behaving weirdly. It works fine for a few moments then the trackpad starts making random selections.  When you try to open a minimized window, it maximizes and then minimizes it again in a split second. It makes a selection when you are only trying to move the cursor. It is extremely inconvenient. On top of that it is so hard to get hold of someone at Lenovo. I tried changing the sensitivity of the trackpad to no avail.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

With my new Thinkpad T490, it appears that the pointer / trackpoint occasionally behaves oddly. When holding down the center button and moving the trackpoint to scroll, I expect that the pointer would stay in-place on the screen and any vertical movement of the trackpoint results in scrolling. This is mostly the case, however, occasionally the pointer would "slip" on the screen making scrolling very annoying. This is even though the middle button is firmly held down and not being released. Is this expected behavior? I don't recall this happening on my old T460p, so I'm not sure if I have a defective unit or just buggy software/drivers.

Hi all! Already bought Thinkpad X1 Extreme (with FullHD N156HCE-EN1 display) and looks like color balance is to warm (yellow). In BIOS hardware tests screen is yellow too - it's not operation system problem. Calibration in Windows and Intel Graphics control panel didn't help. And there is no tool to configure screen color balance like in Asus or Dell laptops. This is especially noticeable when compared with other devices - having two old notebooks (Asus and HP) and white color is white and not yellow on them. It's normal for this screen or color balance will be more accurate? Because tech support tell me that can replace the screen by the warranty - and I afraid new screen can be the same. I know that two types of screens used in this model but having generally the same specifications. And second question - can be FullHD display replaced by UHD one? Attaching photo of comparsion - X1 on the left.

Heyo,I'm having problems a bit with my Lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon gen 3 Whenever I type certain keys together they will make a beeping noise, I found that it is due to "unmanagable keystrokes".So certain shortcuts, typing fast, etc. don't seem to work as well because it just results into a beep. The problem I have is that when I use the combination of "Shift" and the "." key to try to make ">", it won't work and will only result into a beep. I'm not so worried about the beeping noise because I can turn off it in the BIOS, but I was wondering if there is a fix to just get it register 2 keys at once or preferably more.

Received L470 two days ago and immediately noticed a few issues with the display. 1. Screen (full HD IPS, anti-glare) has got a yellowish tint, like the example in this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/Thinkpad-E570-has-warm-yellowish-tint-dis...I managed to somewhat correct the yellowish tint by using RedshiftGUI and setting color temperature to 7000K. It's still more yellowish than my other laptops when put side by side, but tolerable for now. I'd love to try out other solutions to this problem.  2. This one is my major complaint. When watching movies, or certain videos with dark setting, screen appears to be too dark for some details to be visible, even at max brightness.  To give you an idea, here is a photo I took using my handphone. (link to photo https://www.dropbox.com/sc/3fsqdu5ztoncwze/AABpthqcCgi7-sY9K_yUZ8ffa )I'll say I can see more details from my handphone than from the laptop screen itself.I've tried playing around in intel graphics setting but nothing seems to work.

Hi, I just received my x1c7 carbon with the 4k display. I feel like the colors are far to bright and warm, it's literally looking like some kid calibrated this thing, is this suppose to be this way? I compare to my old x270 IPS fhd display and the colors are deeper on that compared the 4k uhd display which is just bright and overly colorful. I've tinkered around with various color profiles, nothing seem to do any difference at all, i've also tried to manually adjust these settings with the intel display driver but that doesn't help either. When i enable HDR it just seems like the display gets darker (lower gamma) but no actual difference in the color, once i increase the gamma with HDR enabled it looks exactly the same as without. I've also tried to uninstall the bundled "Lenovo Display Optimizer" which came pre-installed without any different result, to my surprise once i tried to re-install the lenovo display optimizer it won't install, it says its installed, asks for reboot but doesn't appears afterwards. Luckily i've taken a image of my install before i uninstalled the Lenovo Display Optmizier so i have to roll back the entire system to before i started tinkering with it i guess? Whats going on here, the reviews on this display was good, to me it looks like crap, think world of warcraft colors, everything is very warm. No real depth at all.

Dear Lenovo Community, I got my brand new ThinkPad T480 laptop with i5 8350, win 10 pro & Nvidia mx150 dedicated graphics card 10 days ago. From the past 3 days, My laptop started rebooting without notice. I lost about 800 lines of my code during one of these random reboots. There is no blue screen error before the laptop restarts. Nor is there any abnormal program behaviour. It just restarts... I have the windows version 1803 installed on my laptop. I updated the windows version & the drivers through Lenovo vantage app, however, the problem persists.Only a week into my ownership I experienced these issues. Now I am afraid this laptop will give up during my coding or my work & I have stopped using this. I have contacted the tech support & they have suggested I apply for a return. I do not want a return. I have been using Thinkpads for the past 5 years & they have never failed me. I don't want one bad experience to ruin my brand loyalty. What should my next steps be here? I am very much not interested in getting things repaired here as I will always fear this machine rebooting on me. I understand that any computer may fail. However, I find it hard to believe something as robust & reliable as the T480 would fail in the first week of ownership. I haven't been running any unsafe programs and my antivirus is up to date. Thank in advance

A:Thinkpad T480 display too dark?

"Too dark" is subjective.  I cannot comment without seeing the screen.  When I have an issue like yours, I prefer to physically take the machine a warranty servicer or dealer.  I can then turn the machine on and we can discuss it while we are both present.  If you return it, you don't have a good way to know if your screen is normal or defective.

I have checked the follwing links - T480-Function-keys-stopped-working - Tried updating windows , through Lenovo vantage and also directly downloading the installer ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T - This has a fix for Windows 7 but I'm using Win10 so I wasn't sure if its safe to try itThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Fn-Keys-and-Audio-Keys-not-working-after-updates - I don't have any options to roll back to previous versionsIssueI have swapped my Fn and L-ctrl keys and suddenly they stopped working. The problem is across OS (both Win10 and Ubuntu). Right now I am managing with R-Ctrl.Another strange phenomenon I noticed was that randomly the laptop keyboard maps to entirely different keys in the GRUB menu. I won't be able to use the arrow keys to choose the options. Though I would be able to use it seamlessly using an external keyboard.A similar thing happens in the Windows login screen. None of the laptop keys work in the password textbox. Strangely going to forgot password menu and then returning back solves the issue.I tried running the `xev` command in Ubuntu and checked the output and found that the OS was not even detecting the key presses .If I try to undo the swap (returning to the default config) then the entire keyboard layout changes to some random mapping. I have uploaded my DxDiag output but if you are interested only on the keyboard details -  + Standard PS/2 Keyboard| Matching Device ID: *PNP0303| Service: i8042prt| Dri...  Dear Lenovo and fellow community members Situation Last week, I purchased 2 Lenovo T480 for an all Lenovo customer. Both PC's experience randomly screens freeze, with an interval between 15 min and several hours, so we have removed them from the production enviorement. When freezed, it's possible to move the mouse curser, but everythink else is freezed. Even envoking Ctrl+Alt+Del does not refresh the screen. Its possible to break the freeze by putting the PC into hibernation (close lid) and waking it up again, or by resetting the graphics driver via shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Win+B.  This behavior makes me believe that it's related to the graphics, which is Intel UHD Graphics 620. I have run all Lenovo Userdefined Tests from Lenovo Vantage, and they all turned out green. All drivers and software is fully updated via Windows Update and Lenovo Vantage.  The problem seems to be more freqvent when connected to an external monitor in the dock, than when used as a laptop only. But due to the periodic nature of the problem, I have no reel data to back this up.The problem also seems to only occur during use and inputs from user, I have not been able to provoke the problem during a 12H loadtests running several instances of Crome with Youtube, Edge, Acrobat Reader and open jpg.   Does any of you experience similar problems, then I would apreciate suggestions for solutions. I's a very difficult problem to trouble... Read more

Hey Everyone, I'm having an issue where my dock is somehow affecting my monitor's ability to display at its native resolution. My monitor 1 is "dumbed" down to display at 1920 x 1080 and it refuses to let it display at its native resolution.Do I need a different dock? Thanks,Condor90 Current specs: Laptop: T480 20L5Version: 10.0.017134Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2Firmware: V10011Monitor 1: LG Ultra HDResolution: 3840 x 2160Monitor 2: LG FULL HDResolution: 1920 x 1080Monitor 3: T480 screenResolution 1920 x 1080
