Excel import pipe delimited file based on file extension

Q: Excel import pipe delimited file based on file extension

I'm trying to open in Excel 2010 a file with .exf extension that is always a pipe delimited text file. I have set, using Windows file associations, to open this type of file with Excel. But, I would like for it to recognize that it is pipe delimited, so that I don't have to click on Delimited, Other, "|" to import the file. Any ideas? I also thought about using a macro to save some steps as well. Thanks for your help!

Preferred Solution: Excel import pipe delimited file based on file extension

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, welcome tothe forum
Macro is the solution, just start the macro recorder, give it a name and do what you do, stop the recorder and you have the macro.

I'll try to keep this short, but here it is.... The small business office where I work purchased a database CD which is in pipe delimited format. I'm confident we can't get the data any other way. I can open it with all the data in Wordpad to view, but we would like to be able to open into a spreadsheet or database that puts each piped piece of data into a seperate column or field so we can sort and maybe print merge the data for labels, etc. We are running Win98 and MSWorks (an older 4.X version) on a Pentium II (I think 450 Mhz) machine. This is out of my league... Is there software to buy or can I force it to open like I want? I tried opening in Works Spreadsheet and it combined the data and put it all in 2 columns... I used a friend's Excel program to see if it was any different and it put all data in 1 column. HELP! Thanks for anything... I'd like to learn. Like I said, our office is small and I'm probably the most computer literate, so I'd like to figure this out.

To import I'm selecting External Data> Text file and working through the Wizard.

When it completes with an error saying not all data could be imprted. The log table that is created has the following:

Error Field Row
Type Conversion Failure Mobile 1
Type Conversion Failure Called 1
Type Conversion Failure Mobile 2
Type Conversion Failure Called 2
Type Conversion Failure Mobile 3
Type Conversion Failure Called 3
Type Conversion Failure Mobile 4
Type Conversion Failure Called 4
Type Conversion Failure Mobile 5
Type Conversion Failure Called 5

I have done this many times before but it was always with Office 2003. Is it possible something has changed that I am unaware of?
Any advice on how I can get around this? All other fields appear to import fine.
Cheers

Paul

A:Access - Import From Tab Delimited Text File

The most likely cause of the problem is with the way that Access handles importing the field types, it takes the first record and applies whatever type of value it finds to the field type in the Import Table, which means that when it finds a Number in the first line it assumes the data is going to be numbers. If however some records have text in them you get a type conversion error.
You should be able to overcome this by importing in to a Table with all the fields set to Text and then correcting the data using the error list before setting the field types to the correct one.
Alternatively if you can open the text file you could make the changes to that prior to importing.

Here is my issue. I have a pipe delimited file that I am trying to import as TEXT into Excel. I go through the import wizard and I can get the data to appear in Excel but I've noticed that some of the columns have spaces padding the front of their cells.

If I import the same file as fixed width and perform the manual column breaks, and again import all columns as TEXT, the cells are NOT padded with spaces.

Is there a way to utilize the delimited process but NOT get the spaces in front of the values in the cells?

I'm using a delimited process because the data file contains over 32 columns of informations and I don't want to spend extra time having to scroll through the file to make sure the column breaks are all in their correct positions.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I have used Eudora for many years and I'm now switching to Outlook 2003. I have about 200 addresses in Eudora and it has no export option. I have managed to get all the names and addresses into a comma delimited file by doing a manual search and replace. Here's the format:

FirstName,,LastName,,[email protected]

I did all of this on the assumption Outlook had a way to import a comma delimited text file into its address book. But, alas, I don't see any way to do it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't mind abandoning this method for another if need be.

Try Exporting the Contacts folder in Outlook, as a .csv file, first.
Then add the contacts from the Eudora Address Book to the .csv file and Import the .csv file back into the Contacts folder in Outlook

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

I have a project where I need to export a comma and quote delimited text file. I am running W7 and O2007.
On Aril 8, 2007 Rollin_Again posted the code below. I see you are still active, could I impose on you for a couple of changes?
> One, if the field is blank there is no need for quotes.
> Two, I do not need Quotes on the first 2 fields/columns.
>Third, there is a space before and after every comma that is not needed.

My file only has 20-30 rows by 22 columns so cleaning this up is not a BIG deal, but since it is Christmas I thought I would ask.

A:how to convert excel data to ASCII comma delimited text file

you should be able to save as CSV - Comma Separated Value . which will produce a comma delimited file

ASCII is how a computer uses characters
so a letter
A in ASCII can be a number of different codes , depending on what the computer uses
I used to work on computers that uses octal numbers
The octal numeral system, or oct for short, is the base-8 number system, and uses the digits 0 to 7.Click to expand...

and an "A" was 101
I dont know if you are trying to change the letters and numbers into ASCII code
this maybe HEX base 16
The hexadecimal numbers are 0-9 and then use the letters A-F.Click to expand...

Here is a table of ASCII codes
http://www.asciitable.com/

if you had
cell A1 with
H and
A2 with 20

did you want to show
H,20
or
change the H and the 20 to an ASCII code
say HEX
48,4

Hi there
on the download is there a SAVE AS option -- that might work if you change the default to .xls

Otherwise I think there are some xlsx viewers where you could view the file or change it to xls. (Note changing to xls will possibly remove some formatting etc).

When I import a Text file into Excel (through Data > Import External Data and go through the Wizard) the data comes across correctly in the right columns etc. - I'm ok doing that.

The numbers and/or currency in my data do not seem to "work" properly as when I try to do calucations (such as a simple autosum) the answer always comes back as 0.

I've tried re-formatting the data as numbers/currency but this doesn't help.

I've also tried multpiplying the numbers by 1 (using Paste Special) to get them to re-format but this doesn't help either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi there, welcome to the board!

They could possibly have leading and/or trailing spaces. A couple of ways to handle that. Download/install a free add-in called ASAP Utilities, which you can access from (assuming Excel 2003, which is what it sounds like) ASAP Utilities menu, Text, Delete leading and trailing spaces. The range must be selected first. Another way would be to write your own macro to do it. If you don't have ASAP I'd highly recommend it, as it gives you additional tools and resources not native to Excel, making your life in Excel much easier.

An easy way to check would be to use a blank cell (generally adjacent column) and enter the formula =LEN(A1), where A1 references the cell in question with your numbers. No doubt they're numbers stored as text. If you've done the paste special then there's nothing to force to numerics. The other way to do that would be to select everything and to Text to Columns (from Data menu), and just click the Finish button (not going through the Wizard), which will also force (coerce) numerics stored as text to numerics.

Hope I can explain this situation: I have a program on my pc that is used accounting & billing in a medical practice. I am signing up now with an online service that can electronically file my billing to the different insurance companies. I have been told that all of data that is presently stored on the billing program (program #1) can be sent to the online electronic filing program (program #2) by copying the files as csv file format. When I asked the rep from program #1, they said I would need to copy the files as 'tab delimited text files'. I have never heard of that, and have no idea how, and if I can do that with all these data files. The only thing I have ever heard about csv files is I beleive that is the file format used in Outlook Express. This is an entire different thing. Program #1 is very strange to work with, in that it is not like a basic windows program with file/edit, etc. available to you. Hope that makes sense?Anyone out there have a clue what I am talking about? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

I think this problem may have to do with Windows 7 vs Windows XP. With Excel 2010 running under XP this does not happen.

Under Win 7 running Excel 2010, when saving a spreadsheet as a tab delimited text file (.txt). Excel 2010 appends the .txt file extension to a file that already has an existing file extension. For my work I must save excel files as xxxxxxx.upl but excel always saves the files as xxxxxxx.upl.txt. This only occurs under Win 7, not XP which is why I think it is an OS issue.

How can I fix this? I am guessing it is a registry fix, but I don't have any ideas of how to fix it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

If I add double quotes around the file name I want, like "xxxxxx.upl" the file will save as a tab delimited text file and Excel will then identify the file type as a UPL file.

What I want:

What I get without the "xxxx.upl" file name:

A:Stop Excel 2010 from appending .txt to file with existing extension

Yep, that option is called "Hide extensions for known file types".
Likely, on your XP system it is turned ON (checked) and on your win 7 machine is it turned OFF (unchecked).
But that would work for all known file types, not just the one specified.

In the attached excel file, An email should go of to -email address (Col. Q), with subject "Vendor Payment (Col. C) is due on Due date(Col. M)", and body "Dear Name(Col. P), please update the payment status".

Also, the script should put a check mark on Reminder sent column (Col. Q) after the mail is sent, the script should also check if the value of the cell is blank before sending email.

I have scored the forum for similar problems, and although I found a number of threads, I am not proficient enough in VBA to modify them to my needs.

I'd really appreciate any help,

I need to make an ASCII tab delimited file to send information to a government organization. I have Corel Wordperfect 8 Suite on my computer. They have given me 7 or 8 Fields to enter. Do I use the database or wordprocessing and what do I do???? I know how to "save as" an Ascii delimited file, but I don't know how to set it up before that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm totally new at this!

A:ACSII Tab Delimited File

there's a spreadsheet application isn't there?

enter the info in the 7 or 8 adjacent cells, then save as: tab delimited text (or whatever WP calls it)

you may want to enter the field names in each column too,
then the data in the cell below the field name

I have a very large tab-delimited text file that I want to bring into a program that will separate it into columns. Excel would usually be used for this but it can't handle files that span multiple sheets.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

When importing, you can map to First Name and Last name fields when creating the map... ACT! will then put them together for the Contact field.

Not sure what command line based program you are using?

Going to assume you are using SQL and I know nothing about that.

I backed up my outlook pst file last night to do a clean install. Now that it is all up and running, I cannot import the backup.pst. It tells me that access to the file is denied. Any advice on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

A:Cannot import pst file in outlook, it says file access is denied???

Hi musiclover

Copy the .pst file to the hard drive, check the properties of the .pst file and verify it is *not* marked Read-only.

Open instead of Import the .pst file.
In Outlook...version?
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the location of the .pst file.

Structure:
I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

Can someone help me find a Windows(XP)-based program that I can use to delete records from text-delimited flatfile using a file of email addresses?

Actually, it could be a text-delimited, CSV or an XLS spreadsheet - I can put the data in several formats.

Problem:

I bought a list of several thousand "opt-in" email addresses, but had about 40% of them bounce. I also had a few request "opt-out". The task of deleting the individual records is staggering without a helper!

My background is a mainframe systems analyst. The only PC-based programming language I became good at was compiled (4.5 or 7.1) BASIC. I sure hate to have to try to find my BASIC compiler, re-install it (if the diskettes could even be read!) and write a program from scratch.

I have created a flatfile containing a list of all the "bounces" and "remove me" email addresses (8K+ records!) and need to use it as a "driver" to find the records in the flatfile and eliminate them.

If anyone can help... THANKS!

I could write a Bash script in a couple of minutes to do it but that would require you to run Linux.

I bought a Western digital 2.5" portable hard drive with 120 GB of capacity. I have downloaded a back up file to it from my windows XP computer but I cannot open the bkf file to see what files were actually copied. The error message tells me I need to create a file association to open the bkf file and I don't know how to do that! Any suggestions?

My experience with the Western Digital support has been a waste of time.

Hello

I dont know if Im on the right section to post this.

I just want to ask to our fellow members and gurus here, I dont know what went wrong but suddenly the unknown file types in my Windows 7 PRO x64bit doesnt display its file extensions anymore..

How can i restore it to default? to display the file extensions on unknow file types in windows 7...

Any tips would be much appreciated. Thank you..

A:Display File Extension on Unknown File Types

Windows Explorer/Organise/Folder & Search Options/View.

You should find it in there. (that's "hide extentions for know file types") Might be what you need.

So I recently had a case of hard drive failure in which basically nothing of value was recovered in the original directory structure, however the drive was full of .chk files from a chkdsk run. I ran a quick script to change all of the extensions to .jpg, and most of the files were in fact intact.

Many of the files, however, are either corrupt, or are simply not JPEG files, and so will not open with the .jpg extension. Is there any batch renaming application that can analyze files by their header data, and append the appropriate extension automatically for the most commonly used filetypes?

A:Batch file extension processing by file header?

Usually file recovery software does that (before the files are recovered as chk files). I don't know of any app that will do what you said though. But if you don't have too many files, use a hex editor to open them and rename accordingly. I use winhex (just for viewing though), but any other will do. Here's a few strings that may help:
JFIF .jpg
RIFF AVI LIST .avi
PNG .png
MZ .dll or .exe (at least 32-bit - dunno how they are for 64-bit or 16-bit executables)
moov somewhere in the file .mov (may not be at the beginning)
GIF89a .gif
ftyp .mp4
**\rtf1 .rtf
000001BA21000100 (in hex) .mpg (MPEG-1 at least - don't have MPEG-2 samples to test ATM)
3026B2758E66CF11 (in hex) .wmv or .asf
