I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi folks,

I recently downloaded a wallpaper changer program called Winvista. As soon as I started to play with the different wallpapers on my desktop, I couldn't help but notice that it had completely cocked up! It seems rather odd, behind the display picture there are a series of grid formad dots, very small and regemented. These move around when I open windows over them or when I select desktop icons. I had a go at changing my resolution, display settings, themes, effects and tried using different background pictures. I've restarted a few times and have selected to use different solid colours, but these dots don't budge.

The program isn't running now, but I still have the dots! I could try to put up a screen cap of my desktop if it helps?

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks.

I'm having a rather odd problem that is driving me nuts trying to figure it out, my best guess is it's something to do with the display drivers or some other driver that is loading during start-up. Here's the issue, I wake up in the morning and turn my PC on, the splash screen comes up for my motherboard, windows boots up just fine, next the welcome screen..all is good up until that point. As soon as I get to the desktop I get these weird horizontal static lines...it's hard to describe, the lines don't go all the way across the screen, they just sort of appear randomly, but they mainly are to the right of the screen ( when viewing it ).

While this is going on I sometimes get a random black screen that last for a second or two, then when the desktop is done loading everything all is fine again, no static, no black screens. I can play games, watch movies, brows the web...etc. Now if I restart my PC from this point, everything loads up just fine with no issues, no static or black screens at all. If I turn my pc off then on again, same thing, everything loads up perfectly. Now if I wait a few hours or when I wake up the next morning to turn my PC on, the trouble starts back up again just for that first initial start-up.

I just can't understand why this happens when the PC loads for the first time after its been turned off for a long period of time, and not during restarts, or if the PC is turn off and then right back on again. This problem seem to have started around t... Read more

Go to ATI and look up drivers for your graphics card. download and install then reboot. If you still have the same issues. Take out the card and clean it with a can of compressed air then reseat the card. Also check your cable DVI, VGA, cable make sure it is seated correctly and there is no bent pins. Also try another monitor.

Sounds like your monitor is failing. It works OK after it is warmed up because the capacitors are charged up after it has been on for a few minutes.

I just bought this laptop for about 1 month, the laptop work fine before. But after...I don't know maybe after the windows update, the driver make the screen flickering and some dots appear on the screen, sometimes the screen lagging and went black. I'm pretty sure it's because of the driver because if I disable it, everything is fine, but that is just a temporary fix, every games is unplayable when I disable the driver. I tried to reinstall it using driver from Intel, Windows, Lenovo but none of them work(newest)

Let me start at the beginning of my current saga.

1. I received a blue screen of death about 4 months ago, the first time I had ever received one before. I restarted my computer and everything has been fine since then.

2. More often than not, I close my laptop at the end of the night and let it hibernate, only shutting it down every once in a while or restarting for windows update. Last night, I opened my laptop and had a few Chrome tabs open, as per usual, and everything was fine. Then for some reason everything froze. A freeze that locked everything up. I want to attribute this to windows update reminding me to restart after my previous update. I proceeded to force shut down and restart, then the black screen of death hit me. Just the mouse on the pitch black screen. Prior to the initial black screen of death, a popup occurred wanting me to end the process of "Windows Operating System" if memory serves. Since the computer is frozen, rarely can I click cancel on this. (Note: this popup will continue to happen later on)

3. I did a system restore to the first previous date at the F8 screen upon startup. It was successful but same result. I attempted further system restore points to the 3 other restore points but they all failed.

4. Several attempts to boot into Safe Mode were unsuccessful. Further attempts to boot into the regular startup resulted in being stuck at the Black Screen of Death.

5. Finally calling it quits for the night, I started back ... Read more

I purchased this refurbished computer a few months ago and noticed this problem basically since I first purchased it. Lenovo sent out a guy to replace some of the hardware (i think the video card) and I am still having the same problems. I notice that some days it happens constantly and other days it doesn't happen at all. I have a 45second video I can email to someone if that helps - I do not know how to post that here but if someone can walk me through that, I can post it here.

I did include screen shots (specifically highlighting the dots). From the time I get to the welcome screen until I get to my desktop, there are tiny pixel dots which move/turn on and off. I was told by the hardware guy that came to help me, that updating drives may help though I am not sure how to do that. Can anyone help or offer suggestions please? Thank you.

p.s. I did try to plug in a different screen and the problem still happened (that other screen has never had an issue like this when it was used for another computer)

Using the computer as usual, went away to have a coffee and came back not being able to wake it up. forced shutdown and tried to restart, only to have a black screen and a circle of dots going around and around .  Please help as i live a long way from a town and rely on my computer .

A:Black screen with a circle of dots going around

That "spinner" is what Windows displays while it is doing something, and hinting that you should "wait" until it's completed some task. Force a shutdown. Disconnect the AC power.  If it is a laptop with a battery, remove the battery.Press the ON/OFF switch, to drain any "residual" power.  Reinsert the battery. Reconnect the AC power.Start it up. If you get the "spinner", just wait.  Tell us how long you waited (60 minutes?) and whether the spinner went away. Does your computer have a "disk-activity" lamp on the front? That lamp goes on whenever your computer accesses the disk-drive.Does that lamp "blink" erratically, or is it 100% "on" ?  For how long? Note that 2 or 3 consecutive "failed" boots into Windows will automatically start the "Windows Recovery Mode",and Windows will try to self-diagnose, and may offer to run "System Restore" to return your computer to its statusat a previous date/time.

Hello everyone,

I am trying to get a computer back to life but I am almost ripping my hair off.

When I start the computer with a normal boot it stays stuck right after the windows logo, just on the black screen with the pix-elated spinning dots.
At the very beginning the computer showed something like "watchdogs initialization phase 1" and was stuck at the 3rd phase after a while. Now it just has the black screen and spinning wheel.

As I read it was an issue related to AVG I removed it in safe mode, at least I tried many times before it would go away.
I made a clean boot by disabling services which were not from windows
Of course I have scanned the computer with windows defender, with malwarebyte, with adwcleaner, I even got depressed and checked out ccleaner. But nothing really dangerous seemed to have been found.
Furthermore I made a chkdsk which reported no issue.

Anyways, none of that helped so I decided it was time to re-install Windows (I had no backup at all - backed some files manually though). After installing it I reconfigured a bunch of things and rebooted for the first time. Same problem.

I re-installed it again and rebooted directly so it was the cleanest possible and guess what, same issue.

I am now desperate and am two steps away from throwing it out the Window

So if any of you guys have any idea whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hello All,

Recently I built a new PC Show Us Your Rig [6]

I am having a display issue with it. The graphics card is an R7 260X 2GB overclocked edition from Saphire.

Now these issues don't happen regularly but it is worrying so I'd rather deal with it sooner than later

Sometimes in game (like Arma 3 ) and I occasionally see it on desktop. parts of my monitor only a small area usually top right I can see image being distorted it is usually white/black squares last around 10 seconds or so. I have two monitors and it happens to both monitors so I'd rule out a monitor problem.

Now today I was watching Top Gear on BBC Iplayer towards the end of the show my screen just went blank (black) I could only hear sound for around 10-20 seconds and then that went of to.. I'd had to force shutdown. This also happened to me the other day when I was changing HDMI cable (I have two monitors, and sometimes I switch to TV HDMI)

Here are the idle temps for the hardware (according to CPUID)

Graphics Card = 36c (96F)
CPU = 30c (82F)
Mainboard 111C (231F)

in game GC is around (50/60c) have not seen it get higher than this
CPU can get upto 40c

I have a 650w Corsair PSU unit. Also I have 3 case fans, two front, one top, so enough cooling.

Anyone know the likely cause? (I am guessing it's GC)

PS: All drivers are up to date and room temperature can be quite high 20c (I always have heater on)

A:Screen going blank, little white - black/square dots..

could also be ram related, a dodgy stick can cause image issues.
I found that out after being 100% sure my card was duff got it RMA'd and the new one had the same issue... derp!

try the latest beta driver from AMD see if that helps. Lots of people seem to be having driver issues with the new r7 and r9 cards.

As I understand that you are facing issue after installing Intel Display driver from Lenovo
If that's the case why not give it a try to update it from Intel one from here. And try to update it from Device Manager manually from zip file.

Okay, just created an account to post this in case some people might have encountered a similar issue and have suggestions on fixing it long-term.
My Dell 7348 was fine running Windows 10, but after updating to the Creators Update and rebooting, it would freeze and get stuck on the black screen with spinning white dots (after the initial screen with the white Dell logo).
Several reinstalls later using a WIndows 10 USB key installer, and I finally isolated the cause: the Intel HD 5500 Graphics drivers. I tried three versions of the Intel Graphics drivers to see if there was a difference:

The package on Dell's support page for the 7348, which installs Intel Graphics Driver 15.40.25.4463
The drivers fetched by Windows 10 via Windows Update, which also installs Intel Graphics Driver 15.40.25.4463
Intel's official and latest drivers, which installs the newer Intel Graphics Driver 15.40.34.4624

All three of them, on reboot, would still get me stuck on the black screen with spinning dots. Even on a fresh and clean installation, with new partitions and all.
But guess what lets me boot and reboot without any problems every time? Yup, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers. Using those, I have no booting problems at all.
So if you're having the same issue as me booting/rebooting into Windows 10 and your Dell laptop uses Intel Graphics drivers, this is a workaround you can use.
A quick thank you for reading this far, so I'll get down to the question: does anyone ... Read more

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

HP ENVY 23-d090ea TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop PCHi everyone, I've been searching for a solution to a recurring problem with Windows 10 on my PC. It's the black screen and circle of dots that sits forever. I get this every time I get a Windows 10 update pushed to me and I can't seem to find any help on this anywhere. I called Micorsoft and various 'resident evils experts' have had a go at fixing this remotely, but still no resolution. I've googled and whilst there are lots of pages on this subject I'm afraid they're all a bit to 'deep' for my level of understanding and those that I have tried are not helping. I've been through the HP pages and afraid this has been of no use other than to point me to Microsoft as the saviour for this model (and drivers) for Windows 10. Bit disappointing HP! If anyone could help me out with this then I would be extremely grateful and will name my garden shed after you (when I get one).

... after 15 minutes of hanging in that weird startup screen, considering whether to hard reboot or not, it went into start repair (still there now)...

To make a long story short, I suspected something wrong with my hard drive due to a software giving me an i/o error, after some research (I am not knowledgable when it comes to computers), I ran chkdsk, when I woke up it was still running as it should be (in the process of 'replacing bad clusters' for certain files... so there was something wrong alright) and was at 28%.

After leaving my computer for ten minutes, I found my computer had gone to a black screen and seeing as I was reluctant to do a hard reboot, I waited it out and it moved to a windows safe mode startup screen... but only the big cursor and standard background was present, nothing else (see attached picture). After ten minutes it went to startup repair, which has been running for the past half hour.

What has happened during the ten minutes I was away and chkdsk was still only at 28%, why did the subsequent events unfold as they did? What can I do now??

A:chkdsk ran 8 hrs, then black screen, then weird startup screen, then..

Hello Kayron can you still get into safe mode did you say? If so go in and run sfc /scannow

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

if that doesn't run then maybe you have a hardware problem.

Guys, I've been experiencing two very weird problems which are possibly related but I'm not sure...

First, my display started to 'twitch' from side to side, not a flicker but a movement of the entire screen image to the right and left at random intervals very quickly. This only happens with an application open on screen such as Firefox, but not with Microsoft applications like IE or Office. it is not the monitor, if I bring up the monitor menus the twitch is still going on in the background.

Second, the display has started to go completely black when I go online... The strange thing is that this only happens on the Google home page. This happens both on Firefox and IE.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on!

Thanks

A:Weird Black Screen on Google and Screen 'Twitch'

If you're 100% sure it's not the monitor, the next thing i'd be looking at is the video adapter, aka graphics card. Make sure you have the latest drivers for the correct model installed (ie. nVidia or ATi) and that your display settings are correctly configured - correct screen refresh rate particularly.

It's strange that it only seems to happen with your net browsers as these have next-to-no bearing on your graphics - I'd check there's no other forces at play here; malware for instance. Bit of a long shot, but still a possibility.

Hi! I'm extremely computer illiterate, so please have patience with me! ><

I've been having a repetitive and troubling problem with Windows 7 when signing in to any of the user accounts on my PC.

Said problem seems to occur at varying levels, so I'll just put them down in point form to try and avoid confusion:

1) The desktop (and icons) show up completely black, and the task bar/start menu (everything, save the mouse, really) freezes, forcing me to hard boot.

2) EVERYTHING on the desktop, save for the start icon, shows up black, and the start button is frozen. Once again, the mouse remains active, but I'm forced to hard boot.

3) The desktop, icons, task bar and start icon all show up fine, but my PC suddenly freezes, forcing me to hard boot yet again. Once again, the mouse remains active.

I would really, really like to solve this problem without having to reinstall the operating system. I've already reinstalled it once, and I don't want to reinstall Microsoft Office, my security programs, photoshop, etc... all over again. Microsoft Office in particular, as I'd have to buy it all over again. ><

At the same time, I hate hard booting my PC. I've heard it's not good to shut down your computer that way, but I literally have no choice when this problem arises, and it's frustrating.

Any and all help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'll try and provide more information, if needed.

Thanks in advance!

HI,
I was being helped by Quads on the norton community. I know he helps out here too. Quads was helping me but I screwed up, thought I was helping to save time(yes, I know I saved you alot of time now) but I did not follow complete instructions.

This is what was done so far

OTL scan was run

adwcleaner was run

had adwcleaner delete all and reboot

ran combofix

when computer was rebooting it got stuck on the black screen for about an hour

Had to restart it again and when it did it restored to a previous date

This is where I screwed up

Since it was a previous date it seemed like nothing had taken place, no downloads on the desktop.

Ran the otl scan again

adwcleaner again, log looked the same as first time so I deleted all again

Ran combofix and rebooted and it gave me a log

That is where I am stuck, I dont know whether to leave these downloads on the computer, delete them

I dont think that Quads is going to help me anymore since I messed up, so I was wondering if anyone else could help. I just really want to finish what was started. The computer was stuck on the black screen this morning and finally got it restarted after about 5 times. But I do think there is some kind of virus. Still have adwcleaner and combofix downloaded on the computer. Dont know if I should delete them or what.

Thanks

Kim

Hi, I am having several problems with my computer, wondering if I am infected with something? First noticed the computer running slowly. Then began freezing all the time. Then noticed that when I switch to a new internet page at times I notice a small black screen that will pop-up or flash on the page, but only for a second...almost like you'd get on a "run command" type scrren, if that makes sense. Also, I keep getting a security options failure. It seems this only comes after the computer freezes and I try to hit alt, control, delete to bring up task manager. I have tried to run Norton Anti-virus and spybot. I've used CCleaner to remove unnecessary files/clean. The virus software finds nothing unusual (usually some cookies with tracking, but no virus. Ive been getting a black screen with movable cursor for weeks now. Posted over some forums about it without much of a fix. Tried a few things, even formatted and reinstalled a fresh copy of Win 7 and bought a new SSD drive for a boot drive. AND it still does it. Ive had several workarounds to get to the desktop one of which was to change the boot sequence in the bios then change it back to the boot drive and it would come up. But after a while that stopped working and I would try the repair windows way by putting in the Win 7 disc. But it would still do it the next day again. So now what works is actually when I put in the Win 7 disc in my drive for whatever reason it boots right up??? WTH? If I leave the disc out or put another disc in it does the black screen again. What is the magic in keeping the Win 7 disc in the drive even when I have the first boot device as my SSD drive with windows on it??? Clueless. I recently added a HDTV as a second monitor via hdmi, my PC monitor uses DVI (I have a ASUS 5870). Latest drivers as well. I still wonder if that could be a issue, using dvi and hdmi and/or the video driver...Anyway thanks for any input.

A:So weird! Black screen with cursor then...

This might be the video card it might be outdated or fualty.
have you installed a driver for it before the windows 7 installation?

My first post here as I am totally confused as to what is happening to my computer!

I have a Dell laptop Studio 14z with 4gigs of ram, 512mg graphics, i7 processor, etc. Plenty of power for what I do which is mostly word doc, ppt, occasional photo and video editing. I usually use chrome for web browsing and avast for virus control.

Long story short, about a month ago, I came back to my laptop, moved the mouse to awake the screen and in the top left corner was a black with a blue border. I usually restart my computer and its gone, sometimes I simply ignore it, come back a few hours and its gone. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del and ending a few processes I was unfamiliar with but the screen remains. It is not there every time, but frequently is.

I didn't make any changes to my computer shortly before the screen arrived to my knowledge but my gmail account was hacked a week or two ago so I have gotten concerned it might be a key logger or something of the like.

Any help yall could provide would be immensely useful! Thanks a lot!

A:Weird Black Box in Top Left of Screen

If possible, change your GMail password from a different computer, if you haven't already. Can you take a snapshot of your screen and what the black box looks like? Press the Print Screen button on your keyboard then paste into a paint program. Attach the image to your next post.

If you want help with a possible keylogger, you'll have to read the instructions in this link NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum and create a new post in the Virus forum

ok, this is confusing the heck out of me.

on my screen is a black line approximately a pixel thick that runs horizontally over everything.

When I change my screen resolution (changing it from 1280x1024 to 1152x864 and back again) it disappears.

It shows back up roughly about once week in differnt places (closer to bottom, closer to top, smack dab in the middle, etc.) This has been happening for months. Doesn't affect my work all that much. I am just a little curious as to what causes it.

Anyone else experiencing something like this?

The Problem(s)

Now, I'm not a hundred percent sure that this belongs in the Vista forum, but I have this uneasy feeling that I should be blaming Vista for this since I never had this problem with XP.

I bought this computer around September and up until a couple of weeks ago, I had just about no problems (anything problematic was solved by running as administrator) until I installed the Insurgency mod for Half-Life 2. The mod would sporadically crash and send me to a black screen, as if my computer was adjusting itself back to my desktop. The problem is that the screen stayed black and if I let it sit for a while, a mysterious floating box would pop up and move about my screen. The contents of the box are:

Not Optimum Mode
Recommended Mode:
1280x1024 60Hz

The funny thing is, that's exactly what I run my computer at. I stopped playing Insurgency because of this and moved on to Call of Duty 4. CoD4 played just fine until I decided to quit the game through the main menu, at which point it would do the whole black screen -> floating box thing.

Here's where it gets worse: Since all of this started happening, I've tried rolling back my graphics drivers, completely uninstalling and reinstalling them, hell, last night I even reinstalled Vista and del... Read more

Can somebody tell me why this is happening from time to time? I have no idea about what the problem may be and I couldn't find it on Google.

I assume that it is something with Windows 7, maybe a corrupted system file or something, please help me out here!!

A:Weird black bars on screen.. help please

Update or reinstall your Display driver from the Support Downloads webpage for the Device maker.

If this fails, check your logs and system resources for clues to OS corruption or hardware problems: troubleshooting steps

Have you done a lot of tweaking or used registry cleaner crapware which almost always corrupts Win7?
If so, clean reinstall adapting these steps to get a perfect reinstall, then refrain from tweaking: Reinstalling Windows 7

While working, my Win7 desktop suddenly displayed multiple desktops (about 6 of them in 2 columns) and a message to "check with your hardware vendor"... the only way to do anything was to shut down with the power button, which I did.

I then booted into Safe Mode and checked for driver updates, and updated the video card. When I booted back to regular mode, the screen displayed normally, and worked well for a while, but then froze and was completely unresponsive. It is now freezing almost immediately after booting. (But I haven't seen multiple desktops displayed again in regular mode since updating the driver. And Safe Mode still works fine.)

(Since I am wrapping up tax stuff, I thought I would just work in Safe Mode and deal with this later, but I don't see a button to Sleep or Hibernate in Safe Mode, and I don't want to keep shutting the laptop down completely when I'm away from it for a while.)

I will truly appreciate any direction on this problem! Thank you very much.

A:Weird display & screen freezing (but not in Safe Mode)

I updated Chrome in Safe Mode, and then booted to regular mode where there were Windows updates to install, so I hoped this would fix the problem. But the computer crashed again and gave me .dmp file after reboot. I have no clue about how to open a dump file, but saw elsewhere on this site that such should be sent to a compressed folder, and then attached here. (I hope someone can figure out how to read the file.) The screen also again displayed images of six desktops in two columns. I wonder what can be done to correct this.
