Q: Slow PC troubleshooting

I've worked on a lot of systems but one thing keeps puzzling me, whether in Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8.

PC's acting real slow overall; not talking internet, talking the whole system stop responding for period of time, hanging/freezing for a little bit and then back to normal, not even taking things like ctrl-alt-del command (at least not for 30-60 seconds).

But at the same time you can view TaskMgr and it is showing 20-50% of CPU and memory used up, Peak RAM not even near top, over 1gb free, no applications or only 1 or 2 running, only 1 user, show processes from all users checked. Why in the world should any system run slow with all those resources open?

Half of the time this is even after I've run ccleaner, disabled extra stuff then, defrag if needed, disabled any extraneous startup entries, rebooted, scanned for and/or cleaned up any malware with malwarebytes and/or super antispyware and rebooted. And you can get it running fairly well and then go on using it and it starts to do the crazy behavior again of lack of responding or everything loading very slow.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Hi I have just bought a friends old pc that was previously running as per normal, He took his HDD out for his new pc and I installed my HDD into the new pc and installed all of the drivers. I found that the machine was running extremely slow at boot up and in general making it almost impossible to use. I tried everything I could and ended up buying a new HDD for the machine, installed it, installed a fresh OS (XP home professional)and installed all drivers. I ran checkdisk, defrag, msconfig utility, disk cleanup. Still the problem remains, looks like its taking longer to boot now. the specs for my machine are..

At our company we have a LAN with about 15-20 computers (win xp/vista) mostly HP within 1-5 years old, a linux mail server, a win 2003 domain/file server with DNS and intranet HTTP. The network also has an ADSL wi-fi router with DHCP for the Wi-Fi (wired systems are on static IPs), another wi-fi access point, about 3 or 4 switches, about 10 IP phones and an asterik phone server. A few (not all) of the workstations are actually daisychained through the IP phone where there aren't enough network points available. We're using some network applications such as Sage Accounts, and Clik Service. The network infrastructure is heterogeneous, mosty netgear but I think there's some belkin and belkin devices. There's also a backup server, one networked printer, and a couple of shared printers hosted on workstations. The network has built up over the last decade or so and hasn't actually been designed, it just grew by itself. There's probably other things I've forgotten to mention too.

It may not be surprising, but our network is running quite slow (both using the Internet and LAN) and has been for a long time. Is there a way to track down the main sources of slowness without going to huge expenses such as hiring a network consultant?

Recently, one of our old servers died. It was expected, so it wasn't to big of a problem.

I got a new server up and running, it was working awesome. So much faster than before. Anyways I re-installed my Panda Business Secure and pushed out the communication agent to all of the office PC's.

After doing this rollout of the communications agent, the network seems to be slowed to a crawl. Is there some free program that I can get or use to check why its going so slow? I am new to this job and unfortunately have no one to help me, so Im completely at a loss here and people are slowly getting mad.

A:Slow Network - Need Help Troubleshooting

What's it plugged into? (Switch, what model, what type of cable, etc)

What type of server?
What's processor load? (CPU, disk IO, etc.)
What processes are loaded? (Look at taskman)
What's it connected to? (Do netstat -no)

For what it's worth, a very common problem on switched 10/100 networks is Link Speed/Duplex. I wouldn't exactly call FastEthernet link negotiation reliable. If the NIC is forced 100/FULL, or the switchport is forced 100/FULL - the other side will never try PHY negotiation and will more often than not end up with mismatch duplex.

Hi all,

Looking for some assistance in figuring out why mt machine has slowed down remarkably.

I originally thought it was high disk activity but that does not seem to be the case. I did some digging with Process Explorer and Process Monitor and could not nail down any individual program that was really thrashing the disk. The high activity was from running uTorrent, but even when I pause all of my torrents that I'm seeding, the machine is still slow.

Now that I've gotten through the disk activity, I'm really not sure where to go.

The machine was running great and then after installing SP1 a week or so ago, it's been a bit of a dog. I saw some stuff about the disk indexing being a problem right after installing SP1, but that it calmed down after a while for people, but mine never sped back up, so I don't think that is the issue.

Alright, so I'm a former IT Systems Analyst (Glorified tech support junkie).

As such, I've built my family's computers, and exist as the home IT/nerd. My girlfriend's computer is the byproduct of a Windows 7 HP system's components being migrated to a new chassis and upgraded motherboard. Processor and RAM are from the HP. The HDD is a Hitachi Deskstar 250GB I picked up from a spare parts store, and the original WDBlue 1TB has been plugged into the board as a second drive to provide access to the original files (documents, etc.).

But lately, the computer has been running slowly, with Word freezing up, not responding, and even crashing on occasion.

Windows seems to be running normally, but other programs, (including Chrome) seem to be extremely slow to respond to interaction. My girlfriend wants a new computer. I would like to fix it without spending incredible amounts of money on a new machine.

Think be best to try to list all components here,make and model, amount of hardware and RAM type processor and speed, for us to know exactly what is in there first ,as only listed HDD as Seagate 250 GB,( RPM of Drive ?) Chrome can be resource hog a bit for a browser, how is IE ?
First rule check amount of startup and running processes.

I have tried Zazula's steps for troubleshooting a slow startup and have the results if anyone can help. 7 minutes reg. time to startup

1. Will attach the two logs

I wouldn't worry at all about the yellow exclamation points next to the ParPort and Serial devices in Device Manager, if your motherboard has neither of these devices. Many modern boards do not, especially laptops. The reason these show up in XP's hidden devices list at all is that some "superIO" chips are still used that have a built-in capability to control parallel and serial ports, when such are wired in to the board. If no such devices are wired in, it doesn't hurt anything - other than the mysterious exclamation point you found in Device Manager. The "SuperIO" chips, by the way, are still there for a reason - there are many other devices that they enable you to use, that are still used by laptops and desktops alike.

I am curious to see what the "Details" are for the EventViewer errors for F-Secure Antivirus (event 103), Application Error/Hang (events 100/101), WLTRYSVC (event 2), Service Control Manager (events 7000/7009), and "Disk" (event 7). To view the "Details" of an EventViewer event, right-click on the event, and select "Properties". I'm especially curious to see what disk is mentioned in the disk errors - there are quite a few of those errors, not good if they stem from a hard drive (no big deal, however, if they stem from a dirty/scratched CD). Hi,

I got my Fiber line installed about 2 months ago. The offer I pay for says 1Gbits/s down and 200Mbits up. Naturally, I've never even gotten close to those speeds. At first, when the guy did his thing, I didn't have an Ethernet cable on hand (despite being a network and IT student...I know, the irony), so I used the router's Wifi. I was averaging 70 Mbits down. At first, I was thinking, 'this seems a bit low'...for fibre of course). I went into lectures the next day and people said, you may need to wait for your line to be properly activated...this seemed plausible, so I waited. The next week I stuck an RJ45 on some CATVE and immediately went to average 500Mbits/s (688Mbits/s record). Now, this is great, but it's still half of what I'm paying for.

However, for the past 2 days, I've been having problems. My Desktop (after coming out of sleep) always has the yellow triangle symbol over the wireless icon (faulty ethernet cable so was back to WiFi). I disconnect and reconnect to find the same problem. I restart the wireless on the router, to find the problem is persisting. Only after 3-5 tries does it work. My phone too has been having trouble connecting to WiFi (Authentification problem).

The original CAT5 cable has since 'developed' a problem and has been changed. The Pc hasn't been having the connection problem out of sleep, but Chrome is very slow to do anything. Youtube loads every other time, social media too. I... Read more

My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not

Hi,
To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.

Hi,

I would very much appreciate an expert's help here. I believe I have some adware/malware on my computer that may be causing it to boot slow (hangs on the windows flag in XP for 4 minutes at boot up) and then load slow with erratic mouse/cursor movements. My girlfriend has a Sony VAIO pc. She has recently started having difficulty in browsing. We have checked for virus & spyware... called her isp & had them check her connection speed and still she is having problems. There is a serious lag between everything she does & the response time. At pcpitstop she was told she needed to possible defrag . She just did that yesterday.
She is on dialup but this is sam as it has been & the pc performance has deterioated.
pcpitstop results...

Drive C has an uncached speed of 1.73 megabytes per second.

Drive D has an uncached speed of 2.45 megabytes per second.

For comparison, systems with the same CPU, clock speed, and memory size as this one have an average uncached speed of 5.25 MB/s .

I know nothing about XP & Im somewhat limited to be able to help her.
Cache & other clean ups have been performed as well.

Problem 1: System resource issue

Everything is recognized in the BIOS, but when it gets to the start up screen, it sits there for over a minute before it finally decides to finish booting up. Start to finish, it takes about 2 1/2 minutes. Even at the very start, system resources are at 69%. Now, with only the modem and netscape running, system resources are at 43%. This is ridiculous. Even before I started to add programs, it would take forever to boot up. I've used the Epox book and double-checked all the settings in the BIOS.

Problem 2: Windows installer issue

After the Fdisk and reformat of the hard drive, I thought I'd licked the problem of windows installing things over and over again, but apparently it's back again. In normal mode, device manager shows 3 motherboard resources, 5 NVIDIA nforce2 memory controller, 2 PCI-to-PCI bridge. (I'm almost afraid to view it in safe mode). If I remove anything, windows puts them right back when I restart. If I do it manually, I still get multiple entries.

Problem 3: Video issue

After I've been online awhile, I'll open up a new tab and the video freaks out. It starts with a black outline around the open tab, then seems to spread to the rest of the browser window. Sometimes I can close the browser, other times, I have to do C-A-D to close it.

My buddy's computer started acting up recently, where it started to freeze or restart his computer while he was doing intensive tasks(tabbing out of games to do some web searching, raiding in games, etc...). So after some searching online he replaced some parts in order being: HDD, Power Supply, Memory, and Videocard. After replacing all of these we gave up and went with a new motherboard as well. AM3 motherboard w/ matching processor(not sure what his model is at the moment). When he starts his computer now it says "CPU Fan Error" while his fan is working. So after bypassing it he now gets the blue screen of death. Any suggestions at this point? I told him to try reinstalling windows 7 but haven't heard any word yet(he's been at work now since). If this does not fix it, any suggestions of what to do? From what I understand if a CPU is dead then his computer wouldn't start up at all... it's getting frustrating since we're so close to Diablo 3 launch!

You mentioned BSOD's...
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

Best to use another way.. I use GAIM or PIDGIN instead both can open the AIM Yahoo IM an etc.. Don't hose the system like AOL IM. Give those a try instead. Free 100% no ads an etc..

My computer has problems running IE, it is very slow and freezes a lot. The toolbar also freezes, i usually bring up task manager to un- freeze or speed up the waiting process. I downloaded firefox browser, but this runs even slower. I have a wireless cable internet connection, so internet speed shouldnt be a problem... This is why i decided to come to the site for help.. I went through, step by step, in your "read this before posting a log," and downloaded dds and saved both files. I then downloaded RR, and proceeded to run the program. As soon as it tried to "run," the screen turned black and then immediatley went to a Blue screen error. I couldn't really read what it said, but i did get "irq_not_less_not_equal" out of the quick glance(the blue screen was only up for about 2 seconds before computer restarted.) After computer restarted, i tried running RR again, with the same exact result. The computer is a E-machines model: w2047- Here is the DDS log file:

I have set up a new account with incredimail, but it will not allow me to send/receive. I get a failure and then when I hit details, it keeps saying redirecting. Can anyone tell me how to rectify this so it'll allow me to send/receive again. I had it working fine and then had the computer upgraded, now it won't work at all.

Hi guys (n gals)

So this is my problem
When the usb memory stick is connected, and i try to access the drive, its empty, just a blank screen.

When i try to copy files onto the memory stick(drive e), i get an error message saying "cannot find specified file. Make sure u specify the correct and file name".

Now im really frustrated and dont know what to do. PLZ HELP :-(

PS: the drive is saying that i have a kingston usb memory stick attached, but when i go to "manage disk drives" on my computer, its not reflected there.

You cannot, usually, release a 169.x.x.x IP address or 'get' a new one
with the Repair or Renew feature, it doesn't know what connection to
repair other than the 169.x.x.x one and so will nearly always return a
fresh 169.x.x.x. It could be worth a try all the same though:

How is your network built? The router ought to assign you an internal IP address using a DHCP assignment system. If you're just using a hub then that's another problem.

Really stinks. My wifes computer is aboslutely INFESTED with spyware and she refused to use Norton antivirus because there were good "free virus programs on the web." So I buy Norton, install it, reboot then get "application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) click ok to terminate application. I click ok and the backround loads.... and thats all. How do I fix this and get windows to load up properly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Did you ininstall the current anti-virus program before installing Norton ? Running 2 anti virus programs can cause system slow downs/instability and conflicts.

Try booting into Safe Mode and using System Restore. If you have no luck you may be able to do a repair install. If it is that ifested with spyware the easiest way out is a reformat and install.

If you get the system back up, follow these steps to removing spyware/malware.

I am new to forums. Last week my husband's computer had SpySheriff and I followed the instructions to get rid of it. Last night he told me he again was having "issues". He has an HP Laptop zd7260us running XP Home with SP2. We have Spy Doctor, Spy Sweeper and Norton Internet Secuirty suite. I make sure we download all updates from Windows regularly as well as do routine sweeps and scans. Here is what i have done or tried to do thus far:

I backed up everything of his on CDs from his document folder

I have tried to run Spy Sweeper several times; computer crashes

I was able to run Spy Doctor and got the following message:

My sister had a major power surge in her home recently, and her computer seems to have been damaged. I have been trying to help her get it running again. I know her power supply was blown and was hoping the damage did not reach the motherboard or other components. I tested it to make sure. We have the new supply (after a fiasco with Gateway). I installed it last night, but her computer still won't boot. I am now trying to find the faulty part(s).

Her monitor works fine. Her CD-Rom also opens and closes when power is on. All internal & external cables are correctly plugged in. One thing I noticed is that the new power supply fan DOES NOT spin at all. It's connector is properly connected to the motherboard.

Also, her floppy drive light NEVER goes on when powering up. The cable is NOT reversed and power is properly connected. Is this drive dead?

I cannot tell if the HDD spins either. What should I look for?

How can I tell if her motherboard or processor is indeed fried?

I am going over tonight with bootable floppies, etc to see if I can get anything going; however, if the floppy is dead......no luck. I will also try to put in the XP CD to see if that will boot.

Any other suggestions?

She runs XP Pro on a Pentium III 800Mhz cpu. Not sure model or make of motherboard. She has 384MB RAM. (not sure if that is dead either)

System Specs:
Motherboard Asus P8Z77-V Pro
CPU: i7 3770k
PSU: Antec EA650 Green
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 670 2GB OC
SSD: OCZ Vector 128GB SSD Indilinx Barefoot

First problem, every time I started my system, it would run a scan on the SSD for no reason. Figured there was something wrong with it, and exchanged for a new one. Same problem.

Today, suddenly the SSD disappeared from my boot devices completely. I am unable to find the SSD in the bios, and the system can't boot up.

About to give up on it and just use the HDD. Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

The ssd is connected to the Intel Z77 Sata 6 Gb/s connector on the motherboard.

Okay, so recently I built a system with some pretty nice stuff. I ordered all of it from newegg.com, as I'm sure most of you are familiar with.

The build looks something like this...

CPU: AMD Phenom II Deneb X4 940 (3.0 Ghz)
Video: Radeon HD 1950
Sound: Creative Soundblaster Audigy SE
Mobo: ASUS M3A79T-Deluxe
Memory: 4GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066Mhz
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Anyway, I booted the computer, ran fine and everything, when I noticed the video quality was poor. After some contemplation, I realized I had placed the card into a PCI-E x1 slot, instead of x16. Upon replacing the card in the proper slot, the video had gone out. I suspect the card received ESD sometime during the transfer, but I'm not totally sure it was the card.

EDIT: The card was originally running in a PCI-E x16 slot, but the mobo runs it as a x1 slot.

My brother recently sent me is old Radeon HD 4850, but unfortunately, it is missing somewhere in the postal service.

Is there any way that I can tell if my card has received ESD or if it's a mobo/processor problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway the best way to test is by installing another card
Or possibly downloading a Motherboard diagnostic tool from your motherboard's support website (if the tool exists)

I have Windows Vista, Service Pack 1 on an HP a6142n with AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core Procesor 4400+ 2.3 GHz. RAM = 2GB. 32-bit OS. I have hard drive space used of 220 GB and free of 143 GB. It is a desktop. I have been through the malware log forum and am certified as "clean." My ISP is Charter, and I confirmed with them that our "link" is at 16MG.I'm sort of in the "if it ain't broke - don't fix it" category. I am, however, currently having a problem with a slow machine. It is especially noticible when downloading my email (Outlook 2007). It often goes a byte at a time and heaven help me if someone sent a photo in the email. It can take 10 minutes to do what used to be done in a second or two. There haven't been any new applications loaded in ages. Does SP2 contain anything that might be a remedy for this? Or, is there something that I can specifically do in Outlook to troubleshoot why this is happening and get it speeded up? Does it care about sizes of files or anything like that?Thanks in advance for your help.

For system security reasons I would strongly recommend updating to SP2.

As for your computer running slowly, there are several reasons why this happens.

Fragmented hard drive---defragment the hard drive.

Too many programs running in the system tray---disable their automatic startup feature within the program's settings.

Bloated hard drive with too many non-used programs----uninstall programs you do not need.

Too many address bars in Internet Explorer-----remove all but one, it also gives you more browser space.

Too many add-ons in Internet Explorer---most are not needed, flash players are okay, but too many add-ons slow the browser down.

Too many browser helper objects in Internet Explorer---Most don't help at all.

ActiveX control files------again depends on what its for and if its really needed.

The list goes on, but these are a few that can slow down a computer while surfing the net.

Firewalls, security settings in browsers can slow you down a bit to, but they are worth the the protection they give you----Do not disable those.

When I go get on my laptop , I think it's a hp alter landing not for sure, it won't connect to the wifi hooking up to the house, and when I go to troubleshoot it it says that the problems are wireless capability is turned of not fixed and a network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken ? But the wifi works on our phone , tried unplugging and everything, what could I do ? HELP ! Please .

hp alter landing - do you have the model number
Most laptops have a wireless switch on/off or FN key

Check the wireless is switched ON
theres often a physical switch or a combination of the FN and one of the F keys to toggle the wireless on/off
often F2 is used - but note , not always - look for a symbol that looks a little like (( i ))

is the wireless on?

post back an ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.

I recently signed up for DSL (3m/768) from cincinnati bell's zoomtown.

I have had trouble maintaining a constant connection at any speed around 8pm to 2am in the morning.

I've only had it a few days but during that time span I would have problems at 3m speed, 2m, 1m, or even 768 settings from the provider.

Today the connection has been stable since about 7am.

As you can see my download speed is all over the place (and nothing near 2-3m). My upload speed is more consitant around 640 (probably 768 including overhead)

I called tech support many times. zoomtown has sent out a tech already and he couldn't find anything wrong with the line meter reader with regards the connection dropping. When he came he called to set the speed to 3m (was 768 down) and said with 3000/768 I had 16dB s/n. Is that good?

I called zoomtown again and they are going to send out another tech when the problem time is (most likely evening around 8pm). The soonest they can come out is friday.

Has anyone seen this happen before? any ideas what is wrong? Again the speeds listed above are for when they set my connection to 3M. When it was at 7... Read more

A:New guy here needs some help troubleshooting

As some of you know my DSL service has been cutting off on me. For the past 4 days (3 of which I have proof) my connection would drop like clockwork around 8:20PM at night and not come on until morning. Last night I was using xbox live and right at 8:20 or so my connection was lost. I looked out the window and the street lights were just powering on. I called my provider and they said it is likely that could be the cause since they have seen it before.

The only odd thing is that on Sat & Sun night the connection went out around 8:20pm and didn't come back until around 7am. But last night it cut out at 8:20PM and came back on at 9PM or so.

Below is a history of my connection. The green is the ping delay and the blue is packet loss (they have 3 locations pinging my IP):

They are sending a tech out friday evening and to try fix the problem. Hopefully it is as simple as the lights causing the problem (interfering with poorly sheilded cabling). Any other ideas what it might be?

Hello. This is my first time to post a thread here at Techguy.org so I hope this site would make a good impression for me. I am
currently studying IT so this techie forum stuff would soon come in handy. I would just like to know why does each time I troubleshoot my netbook device (Acer Aspire One 722) under Devices and Printers it fails to install and fix itself. The devices are
microsoft teredo tunneling adapter and the microsoft ISATAP adapters (1,2 and 3). First of all what are these devices and their importance and how to troubleshoot it manually. Then is there anything I can do to Prevent this, an exclamation mark next to my device is for me irritating to see. . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm helping a friend repair his PC, but I've tried pretty much all I can think of.

So far I've ran CHKDSK /R /P, the results of which were no errors...

His description is that it runs a CHKDSK, then tries to boot, but never does. Same goes for Safe Mode, Run Last Good Config. It just freezes on spot.

It's almost as if it is stuck performing CHKDSK, but never actually completing it. (Aside from the Recovery Console) It completes it, but leaves me at the end message: "Windows has made corrections to the file system."

"Various data storage numbers ...

And a single period at the very end, and that's where it freezes.

He doesn't want me deleting any data on his hard-drive either.

Any further suggestions I can try?

Oh, I've also tried testing the memory modules, tested to see if it had sufficient power (Removed the CD ROM power, etc), all checked out fine.

I was actually considering taking a backup of his entire disk, formatting in NTFS, installing XP again, and transferring any remaining data needed back. I don't have his reinstallation disk, but I do have his serial key. I was wondering if I can use the CD I used for my own XP Home installation, except using his serial key (Since it's located on the case.)

If that's at all possible, please let me know what steps I should take. Or, even, I could do a 'Repair Install'?

Good Morning I hope you can help me with my question. I have a Cisco 827 ADSL router. The dsl line went down the other day. I still was able to ping the internet because we have a backup line so when I did a trace ip; it showed it was going out the other line. The DSL line is back online now; but when I do a tracert still it shows it going out the other line; If I change my gateway( on my pc) I'm able to go out the DSL line but I need to know how can I force a "ping" to go out the DSL line so I could know whether is down or not? or how would you approch this issue to find out if DSL is down?

forcing a path is not possible.

whatever program we use, we connect to the socket and then SEND packets.
The SEND will route traffic according to the routing table
(see yours using run->cmd /k route print)

the important like is the DEFAULT GATEWAY address; unless your target is on your
LAN (where traffic will flow there), getting outside your system is via the default gateway.

How to change the default gateway?
disconnect all devices from the router and disconnect any dial-up connection.
wait 30 seconds.
reconnect the link you wish to become the default

Hi. I have a new\clean install of XP with SP2. The PC is fine and for no reason at all it will hang. It's all very random and seems to have no patterns. Once I was in the middle of watching a youtube clip. Another time on Limewire. The system just locks up, then nothing works or moves. Nothing! All I can do is to hold the start button in and reboot the PC.
Remarkably I don't get any messages from Windows, even on re-boot.

I have done a virus scan but as this install is so new there is no way I have downloaded "bad" software.

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

I'm stuck. Please help.

Not sure why comp keeps freezing? Maybe my cpu water cooling isnt good enough or maybe my psu isnt up to par...Had my cpu and motherboard and ram tested and all passed with flying colors. Here is my comp spec's....

My dell dimension 5100 desktop took a giant DUMP this am and I lost about 2 years of stuff, had to do a total restore for 150$ via dell support,, and in the middle of all of my chat restores, trying to find my online bill paying sites, and doing a zillion updates, I have somehow lost ALL sounds including system sounds...no movie sounds, no ICQ connection tune , nothing. I have a added sound card and I get a error code of 1B63:161B well I can't find any resource catalouging that error message nor can I get any response from the troubleshooting guides supplied by MSN can anybody suggest what I might do to get some sounds?

Being as you are using an add on sound card,you will need to
go to the card manufacturers website and download and install
the drivers and software for it.

In the past few days I have noticed many questions from people with memory (RAM) issues. Being that I have ran into similar problems in the past, I am posting this sticky so that FAQs can be answered quickly.

STEP 1: INDENTIFY WHAT TYPES OF MEMORY YOUR MOTHERBOARD ACCEPTS
First: Know the types of RAM that your motherboard can take. If not sure Read The F***ing Manual (RTFM), or contact the manufacturer (go to the website or call.). 80% of installation RAM problems are caused by incompatibility. Some motherboards are very picky about what types or brands of RAM they'll take. Asus is one of the motherboards, Dell is another ? in addition, Dell uses proprietary architecture in many of their systems so generic RAM or third party RAM will not work in many cases. It PAYS to build your own computer.

Be aware that identifying programs and/or websites are NOT 100% reliable indicators of what type of RAM you can use. When all else fails RTFM.

NEVER MIX SPEED, TYPES, SIZE, OR BRANDS OF RAM. At best it might work, at worst it won't and you might permanently do some damage. Faster memory mixed with slower will always result in the slowest speed available if it does work (and you're wasting the faster memory speed for nothing.)

DO NOT OVERCLOCK memory. This means do not adjust voltage settings, latencies, or other settings in your BIOS before installation. Increasing voltage is a sure way to burn out your memory early. Leave this stuff for experimenters and t... Read more

My chromebook CB5-571 touchpad requires very hard clicks to register. I have to really pound it with my finger tips.  Is there a fix for this?

i have set a small home network bu facing a problem.
Scenrio:
Currently 2 Pc (1 laptop, 1 Desktop)
DSL Modem
Wireless Router
i am sharing internet using these devices on both of my PCs (on pc using lan card and on laptop using wireless card). but i am not able to share files on my network.
When i try to access Laptop from Desktop using MyNetworkPlaces a window appeares and asked for user name: Guest/ and password:
When i try to access Desktop from Laptop using MyNetworkPlaces there is no PC in the workgroup.

please help me out

Neither cd-rom nor the cdrw want to work yet when I "troubleshoot" them the freaking computer says they are both working properly? I have tried everything the "troubleshooter" says to do. It's a pain not to be able to put cds of any kind on. PLEASE HELP!
