Chassis/Bottom Plate Separation

Q: Chassis/Bottom Plate Separation

Hey all, so I've seemed to have done some minor damage to my t480. I upgraded my stock ram and ssd and put the bottom plate back on and there appears to be separation on the front. There doesn't appear to be any clips that I broke anywhere, so I'm thinking I somehow bowed the bottom plate or chassis when I was using my spudger to separate the two. Any tips to try and reshape it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, it's not a big issue but the bottom plate of the laptop is around 1mm off. And I've no idea who to contact, and I hate talking on the phone... And the retailer I've ordered the machine only has service on the phone or facebook, but it's been two days now so still waiting for an answer on facebook. Wondering if I could go to their store or not, or what to do. Since I've ordered online it's coming from their main storehouse, and not from their stores around... Like it's nothing groundbreaking, just annoying to feel the bottom on one side... Thanks for reading and any tips! ^^,

Lenovo is telling me they won't come to my home to fix my 2014 Y50, even though I purchased in-home service/accidental damage protection.  They're saying the technician wouldn't know what parts to bring, so I have to mail the computer to them.  This is not the service I paid for.  Has anyone else had problems with Lenovo like this? The issue is that the bottom plate of the laptop is able to separate slightly from the rest of the computer, creating a small gap (just 2-3 mm) between the bottom plate and the left side where the charger & ethernet cables plug in.   Because of the gap, the cables won't stay plugged in all the time.  It's been getting worse for awhile.  You can push the plate up with your hand to close the gap, but that's not a solution.

Hi
In November last year I wanted to try and overclock my CPU through bios.
Couldn't do that!
Tryed doing it through windows but my 550 cpu just wouldn't go any higher than 3480hz without becoming unstable so I tryed to look for any vcore settings in my bios.
None!
So I looked all over the web trying to find a hacked bios for my (OEM) MS-7091 board but with no luck.

I recently bought a new ASUS P5GDC-V board and it booted up fine a couple of times then when I tryed to overclock I miscalculated and set my fsb too high. I thought the c.p.r. function would reset the settings, but it didn't and by mistake I removed the chassis jumper intead of the bios reset.
I replaced the jumper and reset the bios and now it keeps giving me the Chassis Intruded ! message although the jumper is in the right place.
Any help?

On my XP laptop (Windows XP Professional Vs 5.1 (SP3) I'am not able to open an accounting proggy (Exact for Windows which is an accounting package). Although used for years it now returns a warning saying: The following data is invalid: settings (decimal separation). By clicking OK the proggy is gone (return to an empty screen).
So I thought maybe I have to change the regional settings. I tried to change the regional options (Standards and formats) from English (United States) into Dutch (Netherlands) but the system doesn't allow me. After switching to my choice (Dutch), apply, OK it hasn't been changed at all.
Now the questions:
- Can this be the reason why my proggy isn't working?
- If YES (or maybe): How to change these settings

I've set up a network with several workgroups. Each user in a workgroup is connected through a switch and all switches are connected together to share the internet connection. I now need to separate the workgroups so that a user in one workgroup can't see a user in a different workgroup but yet each has access to the internet connection. There's no server on the network so I need to know can this be done using software or maybe some kind of firewalled switches?

My problem is very complex (to me at least), but I will do my best to explain the situation.
I acquired a personally built PC from a friend about two years ago. The operating system that came with it was Windows XP Home edition, but it was a cracked version. Everything worked fine until about 3 months ago. The problems started small, but now, they have led to a complete shutdown of my PC (as far as I can tell). This may get long-winded, so I hope you are ready for some reading. I will try to explain the problems in as much detail as I can, and in the order that they appeared. I will aslo try to provide explanations of the measures I've taken to try to resolve these problems.

First, here is what I can tell you about my PC. This is all I had written down, and I can't get into the system anymore to find out any other kind of info about the PC.

Mainboard
Manufacturer: First International Computer, Inc.
MP Support: No
Model: AU13
Version: PCB 1.X
System BIOS: 04/24/2003-nVidia-nForce-6A61BF09C-00
Chipset: nVidia nForce2 ICP

Processor: Pentium IV 3.13 GHz

Current Op. Sys.: Windows XP Pro
1) It all began when I was prompted to validate my copy of Windows (the cracked version which was on the PC when I got it). It said I had so many days to validate before I would be unable to use Windows anymore. After about a week of trying to find some type of fix for this, I ended up following the validation prompt, which gave me the option of calling a 1-800 number. The prompt on... Read more

A:A Full Plate... Plz Help!

Where are you getting these copies of Windows? Are you buying them? Do you get an original Windows XP CD and a license sticker?

You also probably need a new power supply, it sounds liek it has partially failed. You shoudl unplug or plug things in with the computer connected to AC, thats one sure way to cause damage.

As for the sound and network problems, you need to install the correct drivers, these you should be able to get from FIC: http://www.fic.com.tw/product/motherboard/1stmainboard_detail.aspx?model_id=118
And you have an AMD not a Pentium 4. If its running at 3.1Ghz then its massively overclocked and probably one reason why it has so many problems.

I have a Windows XP machine which I'm told must connect to an NT server because the server is connected to a printer I use. When I logon, I use a network domain associated with the NT server. The problem is that I notice packets are being sent from the NIC card when I'm browsing in My Documents or using my machine locally, and I'm assuming that information is making it back to the server. I only want to send documents to the NT printer, and nothing else, as I do not use the server for storage. Any thoughts on how to do keep local information local and still use the network printer? Thanks.

A:XP/NT Separation-printer issues

If you choose to connect to a network, you must be willing to allow your machine to do what it takes to be a participant in that network. However, the usual network chatter does not expose much information. What is it that you're trying to protect?

The usual recourse here is to install a firewall that allows you to control access on a per-port basis. You then need to manually set up rules to determine what is allowed and what isn't. This tends to be a trial-by-error process since you'll probably start off by blocking everything and then unblocking ports on an as-needed basis.

If you take this route, I suggest that you consult the forums for that particular firewall (such as vendor-hosted forums or Wilders security forums).

If you haven't already done so, you might want to look into the Wireshark network sniffer so that you can see exactly what's going on.

Is there a way to have different settings in XP?

I have two profiles, or users: Me and my wife.

I use Outlook, she uses Outlook Express. I want my display to be 1600x1200, she prefers 1024x768.

Now, when I set my preferences while I am logged in, it carries over to her account when she logs in. The resolution carries over and the default mail handler dialog box comes up again (although I can disable it, it is not the solution I was looking for).

I hope there is a registry fix someone knows about, or better yet, a control panel setting.

I haven't seen an ISO image of any windows OS that had both x86 and x64 bundled together. I have every windows OS ever released and they have always been in separate disk or in separate ISO files. Unless you have some kind of disk that offers both upon booting you probably have either one or the other. If ou believe you have the x86 version you will need to simply download the x64 version.

Ok people I need some help, and the answer may be a simple uninstall and reinstall office. I prefer not to but will at this point.

Outlook is giving me headache. No, aspirin will not cut it, well unless it will send my e-mails without short circuiting Outlook.

The program opens fine. When I hit the send/receive button it checks my e-mail accounts and retrieves my mail. This works with no problems almost always.

However, when I compose a message and then hit send, more often than not, Outlook just freezes up. It won't send the messages. When I restart, usually the message is not even in the outbox or drafts folder. After shutting it down, just the program not the PC, and restarting a couple of times, I can usually send my message.

Anybody know what could be causing this. FYI, whenever I go to type a new message, I get a window that says a program is trying to acces my e-maill addresses stored in outlook. Don't know if this helps.

Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've built a bunch of computers for clients and friends but something that I can't get right are the prongs on the motherboard back plate.

Can someone fill me in PLEASE - Are you supposed to bend them back? cut them off? keep them where they are? It doesn't look right if you keep them where they are and sometimes things won't fit in the plugs. When I bend them back - they never go evenly and the plate looks wierd and sits a bit skewed. Cutting them seemed like the cleanest thing to do - but the cuts are hard to get neat and pro looking.

What the heck is going on - How do you get a first class look with these confounded prongs??

Finally got to actually building the PC's, I encountered a seemingly silly road block: The I/O plate on the Ultra ULT31584 steel midtower ATX case would not come off.

The plate seems to be double layered and is very neatly made and sterdy. I do not want to use force for feal of bgreaking the back panel of the case. The support at Ultra knew nothing and said I should be able to push it out or had to cut it out.

Any suggestions?

The other case I have is a Raidmax XB whose I/O plate was flimzy and easy to come off after cut a few thin links. The problem for this one is that the Mobo's I/O plazte does not seem to stay firmly in place and is easy to com eoff by a ligh push. Will is be more stardy once the Mobo is installed?

There are now many different ways of separating Users' data from the rest of the system data usually to another drive. Sevenforums has excellent tutorials on each, so let's put together some data about the pros and cons of them all....

In no particular order :User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation - By Kari - This one moves the ENTIRE users folder using sysprep. Complete and supported, but blocks upgrades and refresh (windows 8)
User Folders - Change Default Location - By Brink - This one moves those user's folders (C:\Users\{username}) created AFTER the edit to another location. Less drastic, not supported (involves registry editing), and still blocks upgrades and refresh. Corollary : User Folders - Moving User Folders by Modular Script - By Alain Quarr? - Also changes the symlinked shortcuts, and sets permissions, and lots of other small things that can make it perfect.
User Folders - Change Default Location - By Brink - Moves all the folders inside the profile (Documents, Desktop, etc.) to a different location. Supported, no system-level downsides (need to test this), but labour intensive... Also, AppData continues to grow.
Funnily, you CAN move AppData folders, properties applet of Local, LocalLow, and Roaming have a Location tab, where you can choose a different place, and move it. Supported, no system-level downsides (? need to test this), but labour intensive... Also, not sure if it's a good idea... Is AppData user data or system data?

I too am having problems with my ENVY  dv7 17" notebook, with the case separating, except it's the RIGHT hinge. After reading many complaints in Forums here and elsewhere, I've gotten very discouraged that HP would do anything  to remedy my problem. Yet, I see here that a few people have achieved satisfaction by getting their computers fixed for no charge. My problem is no different than theirs, so there is no reason that I should be denied the same stand-up service. Left hinge issue - the very same I have been reading about in this blog. I purchased my beloved laptop in August of 2013, it is NOT a refurbished item ; it is the Beats Audio version. This is the second time this has happened to my laptop, the first time was about 1.5 years ago. An excellent service technician at Future Shop was able to take the back off to find the tiny screw that had worked its way out, there wasn't even a charge for the service. I miss this technician, she was the best one I have ever dealt with. Before this issue my warranty was coming up so I took it in for a tune up. I mentioned I was having issues with the sound; I thought it was a software issue, it wasn't. They ended up sending it back to HP, the motherboard was replaced. Now the left hinge is gone again, this time I am told that HP doesn't have replacement parts as now small pieces have broken off inside. My option is to have it glued with no guarantee.I NEED my laptop. I can't afford a new one as I graduated from college a few months ago with no job yet. What are my options; can I have another one built from the good parts?

I just bought a new notebook with Vista Home Premium preinstalled, but ran into a problem with the hard drive. It has one 120GB drive (I assume), but it's separated into two parts. One part of the drive has Vista on it and the other is labeled "back up", which unfortunately contains the majority of the storage space. I'm in the process of installing a number of games which require large storage space, and the Vista portion of the drive is filling up fast. I'm quite new to the OS, so I don't want to mess with anything up by moving program files or components over to the other drive portion. Is there any way that I can safely transfer program files and functions over to the other drive, or better yet integrate the two? Thanks in advance.

Hi All,
My question is about thermal compound and processors.
I built my system in March of 2006. Here are the specs:

2.0 GHz Athlon 64 Venice
Asus A8N nForce Ultra
1 GB DDR2 (Corsair)
80 GB Western Digital Caviar
eVGA 6600GT
NEC 16X DVD-R

System runs fine, no problems, but lacks the speed to power through newer applications.
I bought my processor when it was new, but not at the top of the charts. I?d like to upgrade, but I don?t want to throw away a perfectly good processor.

I?m planning on giving it to a friend, but they want to use a different cooling system than the stock heatsink/fan currently attached. I used a bit of Arctic Silver 5 when I attached the heatsink, and I was careful not to use too much. Now, I?m worried about what will happen when it?s time to separate them.

How strong has the bond between the heatsink/processor become?
Can they be separated?
Is there a safe way to separate them?
Is there a solvent that can help the separation that won?t damage the processor?
If they can be separated, is there a good way to remove the remaining compound off the processor?
Are there special tools that I should use? Guessing that hammer/screwdriver is not the way to go.

Would appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks.

A:Separation Anxiety: Processor & Heatsink

The arctic silver bond is not very strong.

Remove the screws that fasten the clamps that hold the heatsink to the CPU.

Now, GENTLY twist the heatsink. It will come free from the CPU.

Now you need ArcticCLEAN part 1, thermal material remover and part 2, thermal surface purifier to clean and reuse both the heatsink and the CPU.

And some more Arctic silver or other thermal paste.

Arctic silver is very over-rated.

Mainboard sits about 1/8" too low inside case, and cards in PCI slots do not go all the way in, or keep popping out. How can the mainboard be raised?

Tryed loosening up the brass standoffs (3/16 hexagonal nuts w/threaded screw), but that does not offer much security (wabbly). The mainboard does not line up with any of the plastic standoffs. Need to find something that raises the mainboard from the brass standoffs about 1/8".

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

A:Need to Raise Mainboard from Mounting Plate

Have you tried adding nylon washers to the brass standoffs? Metal ones will work also if they are not to large in diameter. You could also add washers underneath the motherboard, between the brass standoffs and the motherboard ,and then if necessary use longer screws to mount the board with.

p.s. Actually, diameter doesn't matter, except make sure the ones you use between the brass standoffs and the motherboard do not touch any metal traces or devices outside the pad itself, if you use metal washers.

Warning: possible stupid question ahead.

Recently, my dog chewed through the cable that connects my DSL modem to the wall plate in my home. I'm not a cabling aficionado, so I went to a local electronics store and asked one of the techs where I could find a replacement. He told me that I would just use a regular ol' phone cord.

Well, it just so happened that I had an extra laying around and plugged it up; now my connection speeds have dropped...significantly. More than that.

I did a small bit of research online, but as I'm not familiar with much about cabling, I'm not sure what cord I need to get. The replacement I'm currently using is long and flat and has a terminator with 2...pins(?), as to where the one that was chewed was more round and not-as-long and had a terminator that looks like this with 4 pins.

If need-be, I can post pictures...but really I just need to know what cable I need to purchase in order to get my DSL speed back up to normal.

Again, this is from the wall plate to the modem, not the Cat5 from the modem to the router.

Thanks for any help!

The front plate on my computer (dell dimension desktop 1100/B110) is loose and it makes vibrating sounds when my computer is on, is there a way to keep it from vibrating or tighten it up?

A:Front plate on computer loose

Any reason why you cannot take the side covers off to see how it is mounted, and therefore what can be done?

Otherwise silver duct tape would work...

i have a 20 gig WD hard drive..the motor died....the arm didn't touch the plate...so its still good.
it was just a storage drive.
is it possible to install the plate into another drive?
this would be a one time deal...just to get the info off the plate.

A:swapping plate in hard drive?

If you are very careful and do it in a dust free environment you might be able to get it to work enough to get the data off. You'll need to use the same model drive to swap parts with in order to do it though, and unless it is crucial you get the data, its not going to be worth the hassle since you will likely destroy two drives in the process.

Its usually easier to change the board out, which may be the defect part anyway, rarely does the motor itself die.

I do this sort of thing quite often and have a good bit of success, usually works long enough to get most of the data off the drive, which is good for the client and very good for my wallet

My Envy 17's  left hinge has come adrift and is causing the case to separate. There are no loose plastic pieces in the case or fan issues yet.We are leaving the top open; it is no longer a portable laptop. Through searching I have learned this is a common and long time issue starting with prior laptops models. This premuim and expensive latop is just over 2 years old and has been kindly treated; never dropped.I have been a long time HP customer. Today I spent over 30 minutes & 2 phone calls with HP Techical and Customer service ultimately being 'dropped' both times during transfers. I'm hoping this forum's moderators will do better. Yes, the laptop is no longer under warranty but this is a long term well known design weakness.I expect to hear from HP with a  no-cost to me repair solution.Per HP's motto they are "Here to keep you happy; And your PC, too" I will provide updates to this issue.

@JR_76

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Hi - I'm semi-proficient with excel, and I'm actually working on creating some dashboard reports at this time.

One problem I'm having is separating some of the data from a specific column. Let me give you an example:

9/1/2009 14:14 8/28/2009 7:33 7/17/2009 14:29 9/11/2009 12:28 9/11/2009 12:19 9/10/2009 18:53 9/11/2009 13:17 9/11/2009 13:27 9/10/2009 13:19 9/11/2009 13:08 9/11/2009 8:29 9/11/2009 13:01 9/11/2009 13:11 9/11/2009 2:00 7/22/2009 13:31 9/11/2009 13:04
This column has over 2600 lines, this is just a sample. What I need to do is break this column out by month, and show how many dates are from the last month, the last 2-3 months and the ones that are 3+ months in the past. Of course I want the sheet to show this info automatically, so it has to know the current date which I can do by placing the formula "=TODAY()".

So, what I'm asking for is what formula (and format) would I use to count how many cells in this column fall into each of date ranges I mentioned.

Also, I did manage to use the =DAYS360(A6,C9) (for example) where A6= "=Today()" and C9= "9/10/2009 13:19" above. This information is in cells next to the above data as follows:

-13 -16 -57 -3 -3 -4 -3 -3 -4 -3 -3 -3 -3 -3 -52 -3

So I figured out how to list how many days I have since the date in the first column, but not how to break them apart within the column.

Hopefully this is enough information to request some help, but if you need more info pl... Read more

I have encountered the same problem as others in this forum. The base of my laptop has started to separate in the upper left hand corner next to the hinge. I can push it closed when the laptop is closed, but it separated again when I open the laptop. My laptop has never been dropped or damaged in any other way.

Hello, I am posting on behalf of my mom. Similar to some complaints of the Yoga Series her IdeaPad 720s screen is beginning to separate from the panel. Because I seldom ever use her laptop I've not really noticed. While trying to figure out an issue shes been having with some work software (electronic health records), I noticed that the bottom of the panel (in between the rubber seal and hinge area) is slightly exposed and is showing some of the innards of the laptop. She doesn't have the greatest eye sight, so she hasn't noticed. Is anyone else having these issues? Is there a fix or am I going to have to RMA the unit? She's only had the unit for about a month and a half.
