Q: Solved: XL predefined save names of templates

An odd one maybe.

I have created a template, the template is named as such. when a user goes to save it, they tend to just click save, so in the job folder it says 'template', this is no good - they are fools.

is it possible to define a save name? say 'job programme'? then id want them to enter a bit of id to it, but its better than 'template'.

it is odd i know, long way round for a short cut maybe, but the original template has to be called 'template' otherwise my co-workers will never find it - or assume theyv done it.

maybe choose the name from a cell? dont know if thats possible either (i know they could change it then, but the problem is that they dont)

any advice will be welcomed.

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

I have created a 'Template' and saved it as a Word Template (*.dotx) and it's been saved in my 'Documents Library'.

How do I get it to appear in the My Templates folder which appears under the Office Button in the 'New' option?

When I select 'New/My Templates', the dialogue box advises that to add a template, click Save As/Trusted Templates .......... but Trusted Templates is not there!

Any ideas....... please.

Hi, I use about ten templates in excel and I save each file created from them to specific folders. Is it possible to create a system where this can be done with ease rather than looking for the certain folder each time?

Back in my MS-DOS days I could get the directory of a folder and direct it to a text file. Now I'd like to do that again, but I can't figure out to make it work in Windows Explorer (for XP, but I also have Vista on my notebook).

Any suggestions? Do I have to run a DOS window. Is the syntax the same? (Can I remember it?) Are there any shareware or freeware program managers that provide this function?

Hi, I am sorry if this is a very frivolous request. But it is more for convenience why I am asking this as it does get somewhat annoying.

But when I chose "save as" for a notepad .txt document I have been writing all the time the option automatically comes up as

*.txt

I then have to type in the name of the document I wish to save it as. However what I was wondering, or more hoping, if there are actually any tweaks or registry changes I can make so when I click 'save as' in notepad. The notepad 'save as' screen automatically pops up and assigns the first line of text inside the .txt file I have just typed as the possible name of the document to save.

This is similar to how Microsoft Office uses the 'save as' option, and for time saving and convenience I was hoping someone may know if there was possibly a way to set Notepad to do this automatically too.

So I've recently learned how to use Word templates and want to convert many of my work documents to same. I have also learned how to change the file title in the template's properties in order to keep the naming convention standardized from file to file. The problem is that my file naming system makes use of dashes in order to make names more readable. Unfortunately dashes, as well as periods and brackets (both of which I tried as substitutions) both seem to "cut off" the file name. If I try and use the title "label - 5161 Avery - client addresses", for example, using "save as" doesn't bring it up as "label - 5161 Avery - client addresses.docx" - it just brings it up as "label.docx". Is there any separator mark that works in the Word filename or am I going to have to live with less readable filenames if I want to use templates?

I have been trying to make a compilation onto a CD/R using Nero 8. For some reason the name I assign to the CD and the names of the tracks all disappear.

Anyone any ideas - or the name of a free alternative to Nero?

I have searched Google and Kelly and asked in 24hoursupport.helpdesk but can't find an answer. Maybe I have used the wrong terminolgy in the searches?

I am using Win XP SP2

When I open the SAVE or OPEN dialog boxes the list of folders and files appear in reverse alphabetical order.

I have tried clicking on DETAILS then on the NAME heading and it comes back to the right order but next time I open a dialog box it is back to reverse order!

I have also tried right click in the dialog box and select Arrange Icons > By Name

I have tried both the above with and without CTRL being held down

It happens in all types of programs, not just MS ones.

All suggestions thankfully received.

I changed a standard word template that appeared in 'Available Templates' on Word 2010 to suit my needs. I followed some online advice about saving the new/amended template as a Word template in 'My Templates'.

However, whatever I did, I couldn't save the template there and had to save it in 'My Documents' instead. Can anyone tell me how to transfer the saved template from My Documents into My Templates on Word?

A:How To Move Saved New Templates From My Documents To My Templates?

I use Word 2013, but I think they are very similar. See if following this method works.

Open Word, select File, then Options & then select Save as shown in the screen shot.
You will probably have to set up a Folder in your Documents Library, which you can name whatever suits you.
When you have done that you will need to set up the path for Word to be able to find your new Folder. You could use the same path as the one for your Word Documents, but change the part necessary to point to where your new Template Folder is.

You should then be able to copy your saved Template that is in your Word documents & paste it into the new Folder. If everything works then you can delete the one in your documents.

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

I am trying to remove OEM branding from IE 11 in Windows 10. For the most part I have managed to get rid of most of it but there is one last thing that is proving tricky. This is a pre filled url in the dropdown IE address bar, which points to the manufacturer's
support site unsurprisingly.

Obviously you can click the cross next to it and it will go, but will return upon any reset of IE.

I thought the answer may lie in the reg key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
plus the corresponding HKLM keys also.

Having deleted the entire key, which contains every setting for IE, I sill see that upon any reset of IE (from advanced tab of internet options), the url returns.


So the question is really where is IE getting this information from at the point that it is reset. More to the point, where have the manufacturer hidden something somewhere that IE then pulls into it as it's default.

Hello BlitzMX, I have given a good look for something similar to what you are looking for, but I am not sure if there is such a browser extension, probably not enough people have the need for it.

Why are you looking for something like this anyway? The only application I can think of, would be IRC, where you may wish to say something based on a reply that appears (making a bot).

If you are making a website, then you could use JavaScript/PHP (depending how you implement it) to show messages once certain text appears and/or is inputted.

I'm looking for a way to quickly reference a predefined selection of files.

For example, folder "Photos" contains:

1.jpg
etc.
9.jpg

In another folder, "Best of Photos", I want to reference a few of the photos in "Photos". I say 'reference' because I don't want to actually move or copy any files from "Photos" to "Best of Photos".

One way to do it would be to create several shortcuts, one for each selected photo, and place them in "Best of Photos". The downside is that it can become a mess when there are many selected photos.

A different way would be to use a saved Windows Search. I could use the query "1 OR 2 OR 4 OR 8" and than save the Windows Search to the "Best of Photos" folder. In theory it's an elegant solution but as soon as there are more than about 80 OR's this method no longer works.

The way I'm currently doing it is by adding some sort of suffix to the selected photos filename, e.g. 1_SEL.jpg and then searching for SEL to select the right photos. This is probably the best solution I've come up with, but it's not ideal since I prefer to keep the filenames untouched.

Would there be a better solution to this problems than the ones I've come up with?

Hi! I'm setting up a lab in Deploying Virtual Private Networks with Microsoft Windows Server 2003. I've just completed some remote access policies and enabled auto-enrollment in active directory, and used gpupdate. The next step is to configure certificate templates. I go to run, type in certtmpl.msc, and receive a message:
Windows could not create the object identifier list. The computer is not joined to a domain. Certificate templates are not available.
The computer is joined to a domain---I pinged the DC, and the Enterprise Root CA is on server 2003 enterprise. I can type in, on the DC, the url---http://CA3.example.com/certsrv, and I immediately go to CA3 for the welcome page for certificate enrollment. I googled to try to solve this, and the only thing I could find is something about if the templates were accidentally deleted. It says they should be seen in AD Sites and Services, which they're not. It says if they have disappeared, to type at a command prompt, with enterprise ad credentials:
regsvr32 /i:i /n certcli.dll
which I did and received confirmation that it was successful. However, no templates. Same message when using the run command again. How do I get the templates? Where did they go, and why? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Figured it out. Just as you have to be a member of the enterprise admins as well as domain admins to install an enterprise root ca, you need the same credentials to run it. I logged in with the enterprise account, and all the templates appeared.

I use uleads "video studio 11.5". This program is very limited with their templates that are WMV files. They are short, and used for starting a video or jpg slide show, and creating a DVD.

Does anyone know where I can download a lot of short movie clips to use are introductions to my slide shows? They must be in any movie format, I have a converter that I can use to change the format, if ulead's program won't except it. They can be in cartoon form, or anything else like that.

Whenever I capture and save a pre-defined screen area image using ScreenPrint32 I am not entirely happy with the image quality.



Notice the "white spots" or "speckling" that surround most of the text as seen here in this unedited version:
I use Dell Picture Studio's Image Expert to edit my pix and again I mention that the image above is unedited or resized it's 1:1....this condition exists when I first view the image after saving into Image Expert and prior to using UploadIt! So, it would have nothing to do with the UploadIt! Image Hosting process.

If I want to resize the image from, in this case, 792x143 Pixels down to a more practical 492x87 Pixels size for Forum Thread viewing, the image quality and text clarity/sharpness is even more deformed as shown in the following image.
Here I simply resized the image:



How can I optimize the image quality?
Switch to an alternate Image Editor?

Hi, I hope someone can help.

I'm using Outlook 2002 and am trying to emulate the out of office reply with an outlook rule. When I try and save my message as a template the option 'outlook template' doesn't appear in the 'save as type' drop down list. The nearest thing is document template which I then can't find when I set up the rule.

I have made sure the message is plain text and I have tried navigating to the outlook template file to save it but with no luck.

Does anyone recognise this problem?

Hello to all @ TSG

I am still getting used to Windows 7 Pro and so am not used to many things. I wanted to add my own templates I'd created ages ago to the correct folder, like I used to do with Windows XP.

I first put ticks in to Show hidden files and folders and even the Hide Protecting System but I still cannot see APP DATA. I believe this is where the MS templates are stored?
I understand it's in Windows 7> C:\Users\user name\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates)

I am the administrator and as far as I can tell, have all rights to things but I just cannot see this AppData part when I scroll down.

I did try with both Programs and Programs 86x but it wouldn't let me. ISurely there must be a way? I don't want to start re-creating all my templates!

Hello,

IN WORD XP 2003, I am creating a custom template (.dot) for a client. WORD typically hides templates away in a hidden drive to protect them from alterations. And, when you open a template, the WORD default is to bring them up as a document (.doc) with all the embedded formatting and boilerplate text from which a user to can create a unique document.

With some finagling, on my own computer I have found that I can save a template in a file of my own creation where I can find it again. If I am very careful to open the document as a template, I can then make edits to the template itself.

I want transfer the final template to my client electronically (via email).

QUESTION: Can you provide step-by-step instructions for 1) how and where the client should save the template, so it is not filed away in the default hidden drive; and 2) how the client can give designated employees access to update and edit the template?

Hi there!

Question:
Is there a way to have a Document to be printed on a predefined Printer NOT beeing the System Default one?

Let me explain:
We're using an Excel that needs to be filled with Information which then fills the gaps in a special designed Paper we used with our old Printer.

As of recently we aquired a 2nd Printer ( System Default ) which is having problems with the special Paper so we have to use the old one but the one person which handles this work is a little overwhelmed when it comes to switching Printers.

( I know... it's just one click but meh... )

I was only able to find a reference of these counters in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit archives (28 thousand ! pages pdf). Nothing more recent. Is there any reference guide having these by Windows versions?
I managed to pull some of these through Powershell and .Net classes, but it only works if I know at least the categories that are predefined. I would really like to have an official list released by Microsoft or something.

Preface:
My mother is 77 yrs young and has trouble, too often for my liking, with dragging and dropping files to the correct folders. She imports pics from her digital camera, which get sent to a newly created folder (date-time) insode her main picture folder. Then she edits the file-name and sometimes crops and tweaks the images. When she is done, she needs to move them from this temporary date-time folder to any number of specific folders.....Thanksgiving, Christmas, John, Mark and Terry...etc.

Objective:
I'm looking for a more fail-safe way of the move process. My first thought was to create a "move to" link for the right-click. But from there she has to continuously search for the "Specific file." I thought there were programs out there that allowed one to have a group of 'specific folders" to move files to. In other words, Right-click on a file, select move to, have a list of folder that one could move the file to, select the folder, and its all done.

any ideas??

A:Finding an easy way to move a file to a predefined location

If there are not too many target folders, you could include them into the sendto right click menu. That would work with up to e.g. 10 - after that it gets a bit messy.

If that's something you want to try, post back and I give you the details. Here is an example of my right click menu that I have set up that way - but only for 1 folder => A1Temp.

I reinstalled MS Office 2K Pro. I have my own created templates which I insert (in its own folder) in with the MS templates. This has always worked fine before. Mine are sitting in C-Drive, Programmes, MS Office, Templates.

I noticed that now when I go to insert or open a new template in Word, mine are not showing in the list. I open Word, then go to the Top Left-hand corner - File - New, this is where the templates usually open up or are situated. I only see the regular docs but not my own templates. All I see now is the regular, Memos, Faxes, etc. I Can't think what is different to when I have reinstalled Office before?

Please can anyone help me out? Please?

Your templates (your own specific" templates) are not located in "C-Drive, Programmes, MS Office, Templates"
Instead that should be in:
"C:\Documents and Settings\<yourName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
That is the default location.

Placing them there, you will see them listed under the New Office Document "General" tab.

IF, instead, you place a folder there, of whatever name, then they become a <whatever> tab selection ONLY is there is some file(s) (templates) there.

That means, just making a ""C:\Documents and Settings\<yourName>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\whatever" folder does not make the "whatever" tab appear. You must place something inside of it.

Good Morning Everyone,

This is my first post to your site, I found you via google and your previous posts have been a great help to me over the past couple of weeks - I have managed to get myself in at the deep end and although I've been managing to tread water up to now I think I've just got a cramp and could be in serious trouble and can really do with a lifebelt!! PLEASE!!!

Background - I have recently been asked to produce a few forms for my work place. I have no experience of VBA except to click on the "Record New Macro" button and put in keyboard shortcuts. I decided I wanted to make my spreadsheets clever - but I think I might have tried to be too clever for a first attempt!

I am running Windows XP with MS Office and I'm writing my VBA in Excel.

The sheets I have created are templates and I have put in various "little" macros to make e-mail buttons work, save as, date entry, report number generation and other little things. My problem is that I only want most of my macros to run in the template but NOT in the saved copy.

For example - the template generates a report number and then carries out a Save As before the file closes. When the saved copy is opened it SHOULD NOT generate a new report number or a new file name but just give the standard "Do you want to save the changes to this file" request when the file is closed.

I can make templates, file them, organise them, but I cannot figure how to use them. All my folders have twelve monthly sheets with the same pattern which I have stored as a template. How can I transfer the template pattern to a monthly sheet, singly, or automatically for each month.

Open it, then "save as", rename it(check extension type). You have new sheet as well as template.
Templates are used as starting points, not modifiers.

i wanted to use a time-card template for work to track my hours. I downloaded a template from Office Online. It is the closest one that I need and I also like the look too. Anywho the only problem I have and damn me for being an OCD case in matters like this is that I have a 15 day pay period. I get paid on the 15th and 30th every month and the closest time period I could come up with was a bi-weekly time card with breaks (great for deducting lunch without having to either enter a false time to compensate or manually deducting my lunches which vary day to day). So to cover the missing day I needed I copied one of the lines and pasted it into the split in the middle. this gave me two days the same so I started to change the days to their correct values and it auto-formatted them to the correct days. However I only get the correct hour total for one day of entries any further days I enter values for result in #### in the total box. I have tried to figure out formatting and entering the formula myself and am thoroughly confused and have failed miserably. I am a part-time (now anyway) Writer and full-time Framer with absolutely no idea how to use Excel in this way can someone please help me? Thanks and have a great day

P.S., I have included a copy of the template I edited and its original. I have also uploaded screenshots too because of the OCD thing lol.

Hello everyone,

I need a help regarding the contacts being synchronized with Outlook. All my contacts have their first names under 'First Name', but their last names under 'Middle Name'. I want to copy the middle names of everyone to the 'Last Name' box. Can anyone please help me on this. There are more than 700 contacts and I can't be doing this individually for each contact.

Any sort of help will be appreciated.

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

Just in the last day or so, I noticed that when I download something, like a zip file for instance, I am no longer prompted to save or Save As. It just starts downloading to a temporary folder. When it's done, WinZip opens and I'm forced to extract the files without being able to just save the zip file. I can right click and "Save As", but I long for the days of convenient downloading...

Btw, I did check the options for both IE5 (runs on Win98) and WinZip (ver.8) and didn't see anything that seemed to apply to the situation.

Apparently I'm wasting bandwidth, because I just figured out the solution. It was in the file associations, of all places, and there was a tick box (oooh, nasty) that said "Confirm open on download".
Well, thanks for at least having these forums here, even if I didn't need it this time!

I noticed recently that my system and other folder names have changed on their own! What the -h- happened? I have never seen anything like this before. These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.

Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

System Spec's: WinXP SP1-current updates, 384 RAM, AMD 1.15 GHz processor

onthe front page when xp loads you have the varios screen names that use that computer. All of the screen names always have like 20 to 30 unread messages but they never seem to coralte to my AOL mail, so im assuning that they are somthing else. Anyone have any ideas?

I have multiple tables in the database and i need to run cross-table queries. My tables are t1, t2, t3 and so on...
However, all tables have different column names but

t1.column1 = t2.column1 = t3.column1

Is there a way for me to call ... let's say the 15 column from table T3 without knowing the column name? Can i just query the column using SQL?

E.g Select t3.colum15 from t3;
