Preferred Solution: Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I need to know how to fix all these certificate errors after reverting back to windows 7 from 10. I'm actually so tired of fixing what they ruined that I'd also like to know if I'm better off just reinserting my windows 7? What will I lose in doing so? Pictures?
Documents? Programs? Video? Or will they all stay in tact like when I upgraded to 10? And will it fix all these certificate errors? And will it get rid of this dang Unknown Acct S-1-15-2-1 which I'm told is from windows that says I don't have permission

I am running Windows Vista.

When my Sony Vaio laptop boots up, it says:

How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance! I need to get this working TODAY!

A:STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):

You need to install a backup copy of your Registry. The simplest method would be a System Restore.

A couple of days ago, i set my computer for a 'Administrator User Account login/w password' before windowsXP would boot. The next time i went to start up windows, either i forgot the correct password or the correct password would not work, nevertheless i could not get by the Administrator user to get windows started. After fooling around, somehow i got a user log in and got in without any password.

Everything is fine except i decided to do a full reformat(im experienced). Instead of getting my computers reformat page, i got the following:

"stop:c0000218 (registry file failure)the registry cannot load the hive file...
\systemroot\system32\config\security or its log or alternative it is corrupt,
abscent, or not writeable"

I did a system restore,no luck.

Again everything seems fine except trying to do a reformat. I fiqure sooner or later the problem will show up elsewhere if i dont take care of it now.

amy comments?

On my windows XP machine, I created a registry export file and verified the contents.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Hamlog]
    (no content)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Hamlog\ToolTips]
(long delimited string - 1059 lines, 49000+ total characters)

On my windows 7 machine, I imported the registry file and the system responded that the restore was successful.
However, the registry was *not* updated

My only recourse would be to write an application that processes the .reg file and xfrs data to the registry via "Save" operation.
But rewriting my own replacement for the Registry Import code seems ridiculous.

I am wondering if there are any applications that when a certain app runs, it will stop selected services and suspend processes and when the application is no longer in use, it will revert back.

This idea came to me because I, and some other gamers I know, turn off a number of services and processes, sometimes including windows explorer, as well as a lot of bloat that we might want or need while not gaming, but boggs down the system when we are.

I have a hard time believing I would be the first person to think of this. I am just curious to here if anyone knows of anything like this.

I appreciate any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

I have been using Sage WinForecast V4.03 for several years and it worked fine on Windows 7 and until 4 days ago on Windows 10. Now when I try to load the program I get the message
'overflow while accessing registry or .cfg file'.

I have tried a clean reinstall of the software and also reinstalled form backups and no change. I also tried a previous version of the software and that worked (but would not read my later version files :-/) and also cleaning/defragging the registry.

I have tried searching the web but cannot find any reference to this issue.
Thank you for your help in resolving this.

Hi there,

due to some complete mishap, I was forced to reinstall Windows XP. Before doing so, I did a system backup, so I could restore all files. The problem is the registry. Due to the new install, many applications will not report as installed and request that I install them anew. But I got a copy of the old registry file (system32\config\software) in the backup. Is there any program that would allow me to edit this file and export those keys I need to a .reg file?

A:Progam to transfer selected keys from old registry file to .reg file?

You are asking for more trouble... You should have created an image of the entire hard drive, and restored that image to a "clean" formatted drive. You could spend hours and days editing the registry, but even this wouldn't guarantee success

go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,

I ran CCleaners registry cleaner function and created a backup. File size of the backup is 59 KB
I then exported my registry file using regedit. File size of that backup is 305 MB
Anyone know why exporting the registry is so much bigger (about 5,000 times as big)?

A:Export registry file vs CCleaner's registry backup

It appears that the backup that CCleaner made was only of the entries that it deleted, rather than the whole thing.
If you want a solid registry backup that you can also restore to an unbootable machine use RegBak. Very good recovery tool to have on board.

I noticed this change a month or two ago. When in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, or several other apps, and from within the program I'm trying to open a file or link to one (in Dreamweaver's case), they're now listed by filesize (instead of by name) in the folder. Obviously this makes it hard to find the one I'm looking for.

When I manually select "Arrange Icons by... Name", it re-sorts them but resets every time I'm in the "Select/Open File" dialogue again. Browsing folders through Windows Explorer from My Computer does not have this problem - files are sorted correctly - only in applications does this come up. Have tried setting Sort By Filename as the default, but can't get anything to stick.

Never seen this happen before, and it's getting fairly aggravating as it's a frequent task in my workday. Any ideas what the problem could be?

PS - I should note that this is not the virus-infected computer in my other recent post - that's my laptop. This desktop is totally clean as far as I know, have scanned with multiple programs and aside from this problem there's no unusual behavior.

Thanks in advance...

A:Files being listed by filesize (instead of by name) in applications' "Select File" windows

I've seen this phenomenon...and I think it's only with music/graphics/video-editors which I have installed.

I've assumed that chkdsk /r needed to be run on my C: and that's been followed by normal behavior. May not work for you, but no harm in trying it.

My last episode with this was 72 hours ago .

Back in the day i used to download a tweaked Config file that will disable all the unwanted services. I think black Viper used to have one. Is there anyway this can be done or anything for windows 10? They have just way too many services. Thanks all

A:Windows 10 Tweak Config File for services

Welcome to the forum.

"They have just way too many services."

Sorry but disabling services because the number exceeds some arbitrary standard is not a good idea. There are serious risks in doing so and the benefits are highly questionable. Even if services were disabled to the point that functionality was seriously compromised the performance gains would be too small to measure. The problem is that there is no complete documentation available of what each service does. Publicly available documentation is known to be incomplete.

In the past I experimented with disabling services. I noticed no gains but did have some unfortunate experiences which I have no desire to repeat.

Hi all.
I am just new here in fact I have just registered a while ago.
I wish to ask help whether is my PC infected.
I have been using combofix for a while now. ( i have used it last year and then stopped and then I started using it again for about a couple of months now).
I have a current antivirus (other) but I still run combofix to make sure and double check.
However, about a week now I have been getting this "System file infected - C:/windows/system32/services/exe"
I scan my pc at least twice a day with combofix and in a week I get that infected-thing at least three times in a week.
I would like to seek help if anyone can help?
I wish I could post the log txt from combofix, however I have gathered that I cannot easily post the screenshot of the combofix log txt? Is this true?
Or if you can refer me to the proper thread where I could get help would be much appreciated.
Please help me.
Thank you all and best regards.

Hi Everyone,

I am an IT guy in my company and we have to provide VPN services to our users. To complete the task I have to switch on a few services like Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Remote Access Connection Manager and other such services. Now switching them on two to three systems would be fine but completing the task on 30+ users, where multiple users are in different locations is not possible.
So i was thinking if there is a workaround like creating and .exe file or a patch, which when run the services would start automatically and i don't have to go on each and every system to switch them on.
Waiting for a quick response.
Thanks for your help.

Hello BR., and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could create a .bat file and use the "Net Start" command line like in step 3 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below for each service you wanted to start. Running the .bat file as administrator will then start the services.

Hello, and I am new to the site and in desperate need of some help please. It seems to me that their are way too many services running on my computer plus it looks like doubles of the same service. I use Google Chrome and when I close it and run an "Advanced SystemCare" scan it always tells me to close Chrome which I have already done. I also get the same thing when I am on facebook; for eg: when I play bingo blitz on facebook then exit but am still in facebook, it tells me that I am still playing bingo blitz even though I have closed the application. Could this have something to do with Volume Shadow Copy? My computer is slow on boot up as well but I think that has something to do with the amount of services that start. I have done a "HijackThis" scan and have attached it. I have Windows XP Home Edition, Version 5.1, SP3. I have run the following scans: Advanced SystemCare, SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes AntiMalware, disc clean up, FSecure anti-virus program (from shaw cable) and defrag. I do all of these at least 3 times a week.
Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated as I am on disability and cannot afford to have someone look at the computer for me. Thank You

A:Uncontrolled Applications or Too Many running services

Please...do not attach HJT logs here.HJT is a malware tool, used by the Malware Team here at BC...such logs serve no purpose at all in the XP forum...and will result in the topic being moved to the appropriate (assumbed) malware forum.<<It seems to me that their are way too many services running on my computer...>>Hmmm...just how did you form this opinion? There are no set number of services which run in Windows...every program installed has the capability of increasing the services that are running, by virtue of additional items they install as services.I will say that you probably need to take a look at the programs you have installed...before you ever decide to start playing around with services. How To Determine what Services are Running in WinXP - http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/services.htm How to determine what services are running under a SVCHOST.EXE process - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/list-services-running-under-svchost.exe-process/ LouisI would also suggest...removing Advanced System Care from your system...you might find that removing it makes some difference in your concerns.

computer's mobo died, need to move my profile to another computer, but I don't know how to recover the settings I used to services, and windows effects(sliding task bar and text shading) and window and text colors .

I suppose they are saved in the registry somewhere, but there's no way I can tell what values I set for the stuff by just reading the registry files.

How should I approach the problem if I want to make the next computer setting appear as close to the one just died as much as possible

A:Recover registry, services, windows effects, etc

windows effects(sliding task bar and text shading) Click to expand...

That is simply comissioned in System, which is right click My Computer, click properties, then click the advanced tab, then click the settings button by visual efects - as per my screenshot.
The same configuration you had can be initiated on your new installation.
The question of now using the new motherboard with the old HDD is of course another matter.
Is that what you need help with.

Basically if the new motherboard is exactly the same spec as the one that died, you may be OK.
If not, yur best option, having of course, backed up everything possible, is to carry out a repair install of XP

Since you have a new MOBO, you will not be able to use your old HDD to boot the new computer. Unless your do a Repair Install You can install Windows on a new HDD and hook up your old HDD as a Slave or using a USB Adapter and then you can restore your old files from the old HDD to the new one. I don't think you will be able to transfer Registry settings for 3rd party software you have installed. You will have to reinstall any programs you installed on the old HDD. but you can go to the slave/external drive (your old HDD) and open up Documents and Settings/[username] and drag the My Documents, Favorites, and Desktop folders to the new HDD C:\Documents and Settings\[username] over writing the empty folders and any other files (not programs) you wish.

To begin,
Have scoured what I think may be the right forum for windows desktop performance and diagnostic tools - apologies in advance if have posted it in wrong subject forum.
I installed a codec pack for WMP (Windows Media Player), only to inadvertently select to open the file extension with WMP.  Now all of my windows programmes, including Internet and Open Office all open with the very same feature - WMP.  I have
tried all manner of things to resolve it, yet cannot even open Reg-edit in a separate file directory or download any registry fixes - all open in windows media player.   Troubleshooting and tying to manage 'open with' commands do nothing to resolve
the situation either.
I have created a new user windows account and everything opens in their correct exe. formats, yet now lost any previous data - all stored within in-executable files on my original account.  I know that REIMAGE Repair utility is meant to be an excellent
source of repair, yet also none-affordable on my low-income budget.
Any advanced user suggestions will be most appreciated.

Checking the temporary files for the 4 users on my family?s computer (XP SP3), I noticed that there was an inordinate number of temp files for each user. Literally hundreds? I?ve never seen anything like this. I ran malware bytes, discovered a few viruses, and deleted the files. Trying to figure out how this had happened (the virus or something else) I noticed that in the registry, the file or key ?memory management? is missing from the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management.

Could this have caused the problem?

Could the file be located somewhere else in the registry ? and if so, how do I find it?

How do I reinstall this file?

If anyone has Windows 8, can one go into the Registry and Find RunMRU and see if you have a file called "control/1" - I had someone do a bit of work in my Registry this morning and am hoping the guy was legit. Does that file appear to be correct?

Also, I notice when go to Paste something in here, the Right Click options is not working whereas it does in Google Chrome. Is there some addon that would do this?

A:Check this Windows 8 Registry file

I can't paste attachments in here to position them in the post.

I just have to look leave them as attached files.

After the darn Microsoft update was installed a lot of problems have occurred.
Every time I boot the system a new annoyance come up.
I was used to right click a .jpg (or some other pictures extensions) and have the option to choose Adobe Photoshop.
The Photoshop suddenly vanished from the menu ; the applications shown on the list do not interest me.
Clicking on "Choose another app " I will find the same list and "Look for an app in the store" does not interest as well as I have Photoshop installed.
With previous versions like XP and windows 7 I had the option to choose Look for another app on this PC, but not with windows 10. Does anyone know a regedit hack or something else ? Thanks.

A:right click a file : open with > ... how add my applications ?

That's quite odd. I replied to a post asking something similar, but about portable apps. Here is the post. See if you can find what you want by following what I wrote. You should see below the "Look for an app in the store" something that says "More apps" which has a downward arrow beside it. Click on that and you'll find some more app suggestions; hopefully the one you want. If not, you can even find the executable using a file chooser.

When trying to run any applications such a Word, taskmanager, McAfee, I get the message "Application cannot be executed. The file ????.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus now."

I am running XP SP3.

I removed Limewire with Add/Remove and the "Application cannot be executed." errors are gone. I had to go into safe mode to run add/remove. There was also a blue shield icon in the taskbar that is gone now too. I can run the applications now but the system is still really slow, so I would still like to go through the process to make sure that everything is cleaned. The desktop is currently disconnected from the internet.

I ran dds and the output is pasted below. I am currently running the GMER, but it appears to be hung. It has been running for ~12 hours and does not appear to be doing anything. I did unselected the specific boxes as documented in the instructions.

I try using the desktop shortcuts, toolbar icons, and under start--programs, still doesnt work. THen I tried running file extensions such as a MP3 file or AVI or MP4, those files wont open. I tried using programs like malware bytes, FACE from MRI PE, they found errors and traces but i would kill them instantly, restarted my computer many times and still same issue. Please Help.

A:No applications or file extensions run anymore! HELP PLEASE

Hello wschamps42, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like your file associations may be wrong. Download and merge the lnk (LNK) and exe options in the tutorial below to see if that may help. They restore the default associations for these file extensions.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

To help be safe, you might also run the free ESET Online Scanner to scan your system afterwards as well.

Hope this helps,

This is so frustrating! I've been running Firefox and using Thunderbird for years without a problem. A few days ago, while attaching a picture to an email (which I do a lot), Thunderbird crashed on me. Just T'bird. It happened every time I tried to manipulate an image file. I searched the internet for solutions, and this is what I have done.
<p>1) Tools / Folder options / View Selected to not cache thumbnails </p>
<p> 2) Deleted all thumbs.db files </p>
<p>3) Cleared the recycle bin of files from #2 </p>
<p>4) Rebooted computer </p>

No luck. I was able to send one email, then problem returned. Next, I entered the following commands at the command prompt:
<p>regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll </p>
<p>regsvr32 shimgvw.dll </p>
<p>regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll </p>
<p> regsvr32 shmedia.dll </p>

<p>No luck. Same thing. I then tried the command line commands and the thumbs file cycle, then rebooted the computer. I could attach three emails. When I enlarged the image file to see more thumbnails, T'bird crashed again. Then I went to Gmail. I could attach 2 emails. The third one - well, on the third one the image window closed abruptly and when I clicked on &amp;quot;attach&amp;quot; nothing happened. I do not recall loading any new software. I need to be able to attach picture and manipulate my images! Help!

I downloaded FrostWire recently and it took over my torrent files, so I changed it back to BT as the program to open those files. However, when I try to change the file icon back to BT, there's a "restore" button (to change it back to Frostwire) in place of "advanced" so it won't let me delete the Frostwire icon. I even uninstalled Frostwire from my computer because I don't use the program, but I find I'm still having the same problem -- I can't get rid of the icon from my torrent files. When I try clicking on the "change" button my computer freezes. It also freezes when I click directly on torrent files (to open them in BT), as well as regular application files. I tried downloading the free burning software Ashampoo but when I clicked on it to install my computer froze. When the computer freezes, my desktop icons disappear and then it seems to reset itself. As far as I know it's only freezing with the torrents and application files.

The only changes lately were the FireFox upgrade, and a Java update. Can either of those cause this type of problem? Any help is appreciated.

What I'm looking for is a way to add to a copy que sequentially. Not parrallel like windows does it now.
I am ussualy copying large video files from various folders to a single folder.
Ideally I would love to just drag the file onto the copying progress window to add the file to that que.
not open another copying progress window that runs at the same time slowing everything to a crawl.
been doing the google search but as soon as you put in windows or explorer you get alot of bad results.
was wondering if anyone knew of a mod or program that can do something like that.
I'd switch to windows 8 in a heart beat if it did this.

TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user with a lot of features: Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skip the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.

A:windows registry file failure (CP0000218)

NEVER use registry cleaners. If you have used them, they are probably responsible for your present problem.

If you have all your files backed up, you may want to consider reinstalling XP from scratch and having a nice clean, new installation with none of the damage registry cleaners may have done.

If you want to try to recover this installation anyway, you need to restore an older registry.
