Highly Sensitive Laptop Keys

Q: Highly Sensitive Laptop Keys

My keys seemed to be pressing themselves. What I thought at first was a virus, is actually just a highly sensitive area of my keyboard. The topleft area of my keyboard, I don't think it's just one key, are too sensitive. With just my hand resting on the case near them, they act as they were pressed, and sometimes they hold themselves down until I move my hand to that area again. This happens with the ESC key mainly. But actually pressing the ESC key does nothing now. This area is generally where I rest my hand while gaming. Any suggestions/fixes?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear all, I have major problems with my webcam. It seems diffused and the image got stains (highly sensitive to light?) I tried to adjust the settings in the camera settings but that does not seem to work. Does someone know what is happening here. I attached some pictures to illustrate my problem.  Look at the white socket and curtains: Next photo of a plant. Look at the middle part of the plant, which is extremly un-sharp compaired to to rest of the plant.Hopefully someone can help me with getting this webcam to work properly.  Thank you,Conrad

I am using a Qosmio F750 laptop (PQF75A-02Y00Q).

The previous OS installed on the computer was Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I then upgraded the OS to Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

As expected this change would cause some problems to appear. The thing that's really bugging me right now is that the touch sensitive keys at the top right of the keyboard aren't functioning as intended.

The keys still respond if you touch them but they don't do anything on screen; mostly. When I touch the Volume Up/Volume Down keys, they work as intended. However, the Mute key, the Play/Pause key, the Wifi On/Off key, and the eco Mode key (as well as the toshiba bulletin board key) don't do anything.

Curiously, when I manually turn on eco mode from the power settings the eco mode key still turns green.

My ultimate question is, how do I fix this so that ALL of the keys work as intended?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I noticed that the webcam facial recognition was doing funny things as well but all that needed to be done was recalibrate the setup for that to make it work again.
All of the FN key functions curiously work as well.

As an addition to the bolded question, are there any other drivers I should install to improve/restore functionality to my laptop? Like the ones from the Windows 8 page?

Running Vista, had no problems until today when usb stopped working, I did a copy and paste fix which was all internal so don't think that caused the problem. After the fix I needed to reboot and then got a .dll error of some sort, it said missing run. I selected ok then my taskbar and start menu disappeared. I got a warning about a Trojan.Vundo.B of which Norton advised me to reboot and the virus was supposedly erased. I am unable to open my computer or control panel but I can access programs still. Just nothing to do with the OS. Will I need to reformat or can this be fixed? Also I don't have an installation disk, it came preinstalled. Not sure if you need the make and model of the victim in question but it is an HP Pavilion dv2000. TIA for any help, hope my hijack log made it in of to bed for me!

A:New laptop, highly suspect a virus...

Nevermind, I needed to solve the problem asap as I am going to be away from net access for a week so reinstalled vista from the recovery drive as I don't have many things to transfer over.

You may delete this thread or reply if you think it is possible that the virus could have hit the recovery partition and still be lingering.

I had tried the earliest restore point and all the other fix options that are available with vista before taking the reformatting route but nothing worked. I just kept getting more and more .dll errors everytime it restarted.

If it happens again I will be sure to come back here as you all seem like a very knowledgable and helpful bunch. Thanks again and I will keep my eyes peeled for a response about the possibility that my recovery drive was infected.

Ok, so I've just bought a bargain netbook for use to and from work, etc. Only trouble is it's only got one USB port on the side. I've been looking for and failing to find an affordable USB hub that will attach to the side of the laptop, as in a male plug on one side of the bar and three or four female sockets on the other.

I know there are hubs of this type out there, just either not in stock or extortionately priced.

What I'm trying to avoid is cables, I want to maximize mobility and compactness. Preferably in white =]

Can anyone recommend a site/company/product that's good value for money and ships to the UK?

Here's a coupla pictures of the sort of thing I'm (just after the little travel bit of the belkin one, the other one I can't seem to find in stock anywhere without buying it in bulk):

A:Anybody recommend a highly portable USB hub for laptop?

That one on the right can also be found under the iHome brand. It's iHome IH-U550FB (this is the black one, maybe FW on the end for white?)

I'm on XP right now, so I don't know the exact place of things in Vista. But in control panel, classic view, you should have an entry related to the keyboard.
When you enter it, you should be able to adjust the repeat delay and the repeat rate.

My Samsung laptop mousepad is so mega-sensitive to even a light brush against it, and it'll redirect me to the craziest places and do the weirdest things when that happens. it's so aggravating and it seems to have only started about two or three months agon (I've had the laptop for about 18 months now). It's a good computer in every other way except this one.

I've played around with the settings in Control Panel, but nothing impacted the mousepad's sensitivity. This isn't referring to the mouse pointer - only the mousepad itself.

Any suggestions?

Hello,
I have an XPS15 laptop (it says Reg Model P56F under the XPS door at the bottom).  This laptop is extremely sensitive to vibrations, hits or jolts to its case.   For example it can be running normally, but if you drop a pen or pencil, onto the keyboard area, it will freeze.  If you have it in your lap and rotate around a chair and it bumps the edge of a desk... it will freeze.  If you bump it into anything, chances are it freezes.  Usually it freezes with a scrambled screen, sometimes portions of the scrambled bits are flickering or moving, like an old NES game that you had to blow on the cartridge before it played.  Sometimes it freezes with the screen going black (but the backlight remains on).   The only way to recover is to hold down the power button until the laptop turns off.  Then you can power it back on and wait 5 minutes at the Windows 10 Please Wait... spinning circle until you can log in again.

I've already had the laptop sent out for this issue.  It came back with an upgraded 4k touch screen.  I love the screen, its such a great, free upgrade.  But the problem persists.  It's not AS sensitive as it was when it had the regular 1920x1080 matte screen.  Before you could drop a pen NEXT to the laptop and that small of a vibration would cause the freeze.  Now you can bang on the table as much as you want, and as long as you don't touch the actual laptop, it remains oper... I've had my HP Pavilion DV9000 laptop for a year now, and apart from a persistent (and slightly annoying) overheating issue, I've been very pleased with this machine.

Recently, however, the touch-sensitive media control strip along the top of the keyboard has begun to malfunction. The sound toggle and volume control sections of the backlit strip turn off, flicker, change color (red and blue) and otherwise stop working.

To make things even worse (or more interesting) such errors like the light flicker seem to be tied in to my typing on the keyboard, especially around the wasd area (left and lower side).

I'm figuring this to be some sort of shorting circuit or the like? It's odd... sometimes I can fix the error by randomly tapping along the left side keys. Now it seems to be stuck with the entire strip non-responsive, and both blue and red LEDs behind the sound toggle turned on.

If anyone could suggest a solution? It's that or I'm debating just taking the laptop in for a repair run.

A:HP laptop touch-sensitive control problem

If the thing is still under warranty, then you should have it repaired by an official HP representative.

Other than that, you could try removing the keyboard and making sure that the keyboard cable is making good connection.

(Also, you haven't poured something in the lappy, have you?)

I am having a difficult time getting used tthe trakcking pad on my new Acer Travelmate laptop running Windows 7.
First, how can I stop a window in the background from popping to the front of what I'm doing just because the cursor accidentally scrolls over it?
Any why does the cursor stick and not respond regularly? I can't find a program that might be running in the background using up all my RAM thus stopping the cursor from moving. It stops for 15-30 seconds (which seems like forever) and then begins to respond again.
Are these problems which can be fixed? If so how? If not, would buying a wireless mouse for the laptop solve these two issues?
Or is this normal and I just need to get used to it?
I look forward to your responses.

I have been having problems keeping my touchpad and keyboard functioning after taking my laptop apart. In the first instance, my touchpad stopped working a couple weeks after the dissection. I took the computer back apart, and re-secured the touch pad jack in the motherboard connector, and it worked again.

The second instance, which I havent been able to solve, is the keyboard keys. Certain keys will stop working after some short time after taking apart the computer, usually a couple hours to a couple days.

I have tried readjusting the keyboard jack in the motherboard connector, also have tried turning off the computer and taking out the battery for a while.

Please help

Hello, 3 keys of my laptop are not working at all (P, @ and the up arrow). I have tried with Ubuntu and they don't work either. I noticed after reinstalling Windows 10, but I am not sure if it is related. I have now returned to factory settings with the MSI recovery, but the problem persists.

I have tried to take out the key and clean it, but it looks clean to me, and I haven't removed the metal bars nor rubber thingy for fear of damaging it. The computer is recent, bought in November past year.

I rather not send it to warranty, as I bought it in UK and I lvie in Malta, and the shipping would be quite astronomic, and I would be without laptop for weeks.

Can I do something? I cannot take out the battery to reboot as it is a modern MSI and it looks integrated into the body.

Any reply would be inmensely appreciated, as I am becoming mad with this problem, after hours and hours of trying to sort it out.

I have had an ongoing problem with my Acer Aspire laptop, whereby when I switch it on, 1 out of 4 times, my "o" and "i" keys do not work at all. After about 15-20 minutes they always come on again and work fine. I thought it may have been a spyware issue, as the keys were cleaned and they never stop working whilst the laptop is on- it seems to be a 'set routine'. I have removed all spyware and still the problem persists. This started happening about a week after it was purchased and now still 1 year later.
Do you think this is likely to be a software or hardware problem?

Replace the keyboard or use a external keyboard.i tried cleaning with mets and nothing.I'm not sure what that (mets) means. Did you pour more liquid into that laptop? Liquids and laptops are a bad idea. Anything that gets into the keyboard will usually end up on the motherboard of the laptop. What make model and country. Here in the USA You can often find a laptop keyboard for $20 US or less. For temporary use or permanent if portability is not needed a USB external keyboard should work.Good LuckRoger

Several keys in my laptop keyboard don't work: delete, 7, n, b.What can I do to fix the problem?

A:Several keys on my HP laptop don't work

Try an external usb keyboard to rule out any problem with the motherboard keyboard controller. If the external works go into device manager and uninstall the keyboard as a device and reboot to let the driver reload and replace the old driver. These are admittedly not real likely to work but cost nothing so worth a try. If none of that works, then we need to discuss a keyboard replacement and for that we need your full model number, color and language of the keyboard.

Okay, so yesterday I was dropped off for my first day at Uni and I went into my room to set up my laptop. Somehow (truly a mystery) a single tear fell onto my keyboard, right in the gap below the space bar. Obviously, I thought nothing of it... for about a minute. Then suddenly my keyboard went absolutely crazy. The space bar stopped working and when I tried to type with any other key, weird stuff happened. For example, I would type "B" and instead it would come up as "###O'xnF."

As you can imagine, very weird. I left it for a little bit while I unpacked and when I came back to it, it seemed to have settled down, but some of the keys had stopped working all together. These include the space bar, the z, the s, the shift key, the left alt key etc. Basically, several on the left side of the space bar. I am having to use a USB keyboard but obviously I would rather not have to.

Does anyone know how to fix it, or should I lug it over to the nearest computer repairs place?

A:fn keys not working on laptop

That is quite weird if assuming you already installed its native application. I found most of my laptops (ASUS, Fujitsu, and Toshiba) have their fn keys just work when the appropriate chipset driver were installed, even before its native fn application is installed, of course lacking the fn animations. Two of them are running Win 8.

Have you tried reinstalling drivers? Who knows it resolves the matter? Just my poor guess.

I got a dual-boot Laptop (with both Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10) and it seems like some of they keys are not working on neither of the installed OSs. Keys that are not working are: z, x, c, v,m, comma, point, enter, return. What I noticed about this keys is that they are possitioned at the bottom row of the whole letter keyboard (except enter). I tried taking out the battery, turn the power off. Restart with the battery or with the power supply. Nothing worked. Laptop's warranty expired as well. Laptop is 2 years old. I had a similar problem with the "1" key a while ago. But the problem there was that the button was being "pressed" continuously. I took it out, cleaned it and still wasn't working. Turned out to be working next day for one reason or another. Nothing happened before/after the last usage of the laptop. Last night while writing some code was working ok. But in the morning it started to act like this. Any adivice is welcomed. Thank you!

Hey Fred,
Not sure if this might work that well, but give it a try! If it doesn't..go to a technician...its probably the best idea.

I recently bought a Compaq Presario R3000Z notebook. When I'm playing a game, the keys have a tendancy to stick. The physical keys on the keyboard do not stick down, but if I'm strafing in the game, I will continue to do so even though I am not pressing any keys.

On a side note, I bought a ps/2 to USB adaptor, and plugged my PS/2 keyboard into the notebook and the same thing happened. The same keyboard works perfect when plugged into the PS/2 port on my other desktop computer.

I did a search on the internet and only found one person with the same problem, but there was no help offered.

Does anyone else have this problem with the keys sticking? Is there a cause other than dirt/dust?

Thanks,
Totoro

A:keys stick on laptop

Have you taken a look in the BIOS of the notebook?

There could be a setting which allows you to set how fast the key will repeat when pressed, and for how long a key will be registered as "pressed". If you have the latter setting, try reducing it to see if that solves the problem... (And check to see if there are any similar settings which might help)

Morning all
I have somehow altered the setting on my laptop keyboard so that when I am typing, my laptop uses the numeric instead of the alpha. (the keyboard has shared alpha / numeric keys that so that the numerics are accessed when you hold down the Fumction key). However, the numerics have become the primary function instead. How do I change this back so that the alpha keys remain the primary function ? Thanks - Its driving me mad !

A:Laptop function keys

There should be a fn lock on your keyboard somewhere.

Go through that article if your PC is feeling slow. Registry Cleaners are not advised because they can do a lot of damage.

Some keys in my HP Laptop have not been working. I called the toll free number fifty three ( No five does not work) times since 8am till now which is 430 am. With utmost difficult and much trying i did get through to a couple of Technical staff. One Mohit was the most helpful and he provided me with a complaint no 47730five10773. He said he would call me back at 1130 am since I explained my difficulty in reaching anybody through toll free no. It is 4 30 now and he hasn't yet called! One Sandeep promised to put me on to a senior and cut the call. Next time I reached the tech dept and I recognized his voice but he cut the call. I belong to the press and I have an urgent matter to email for print tomorrow. I have explained this to them. All I want is to have an engineer come and set the keyboard right and they do not want to do it. It is such a small matter and I have spent an entire working day trying to contact them. I tried to contact some corporat office. In Chennai, the receptionist rudely banged down the phone saying he could not help. All other numbers given in HP site and net are wrong.  Can  somebody help me how to get this small matter sorted out. I am not able to reach tech support because everytime the call gets cut. NObody is accessible. It is urgent.

We are just fellow end Users. We can't send out an engineer. You do not give us the model number of your laptop but I sense you are not interested in self-repair. If the project is urgent in the short run I suggest you use an external usb keyboard to get your work done while you wait for HP to respond. Sorry I have no more control over the situation.

I have a three year old Fujitsu Lifebook "S" series laptop (Model No. LBS 5582). Suddenly some keys on the keyboard have stopped functioning. They are not responding to strokes; that is the corresponding characters are not being displayed on the screen. These keys include alphabet keys, number keys and function keys. I use "Win XP Pro" for software.

What could be the problem? How to rectify? I am in Calcutta and there is no service center for Fujitsu.

Hi asishbm,

I had a similar problem with my Logitech wireless keyboard earlier this year. The solution that worked for me was to shoot compressed air over all of the nooks and crannys between the keys to get rid of the dust that has caused my problem. I use WinXP Pro SP2.

I did not use canned compressed air, but my portable air compressor with a trigger to press on connected to the nozzle which delivers the air - i.e. the connection is not the kind used to fill tyres for autos. You might check with a local gas station mechanic if they have such a connector to clean dust and see if they can help you - I have no idea whether they would or not, I'm just throwing out the idea for you to run with.

Good luck,

-- Tom

A:Some of my laptop keys are not working

hello raj, This is quite common in laptops well it was with mine.

I found out that the problem was cause by crumbs below the keys. but it is really easy to fix. It could also be caused by the key bracket.

place a flat head screwdriver or your finger nail, at the corner of the key, And apply a little upward pressure they key should pop offf.

Have a look for any crumbs ect, wobble the bracket to see if this helps.

To re-apply they key just place it on top of the bracket and push down until you hear a click.

Let me know if this helpde.

Hi I noticed that gradually certain keys near each other are now not working on my Dell Inspiron 64OO, which is a couple of years old now....

the keys that arent working are the zero, minus symbol and equal sign on top line, letter p and bracket beside it, semicolon and apostrophe, slash with question mark. So they are related somehow I guess seeing that they are all in a line that runs downward.

I did pop off the letter p key and tried carefully cleaning it and it did work occasionally, but I gave up being patient and just copy and paste now, which is an absolute nuisance. please help if you can!

I have problem with keyboard, its doing mistakes and some buttons doesn't even work.

First, after computer get wet by tea, my computer shut downed and doesn't start like a hour and a half. After that computer starts, I was top of the day until I saw that my keyboard is f***ed up.

Any tips please?

A:Laptop got wet, some keys don't work

Shut it down and dissassemble it as much as you are comfortable doing, then put it in front of a fan. A space heater on the lowest setting if you have one.

Unfortunately for you, you did about the worst thing possible after spilling a drink on it. You should not have tried to turn it back on. You should have left it off until you were reasonably sure everything was dried inside, and you should have tipped it upside down to get all the liquid possible out of it asap.

You might be able to take it mostly apart and wipe down everything with some high percentage isopropyl alcohol to clean it up some.

Alternative is to use a USB or bluetooth keyboard. But I wouldn't recommend running that system without making an attempt to clean up any residue left inside.
