Transfered files corrupted in windows 10 insider

Q: Transfered files corrupted in windows 10 insider

I have just upgraded to release 14942.1000 and still, I cannot paste files to my three network drives.
I can copy files from my drives to any computer on my network but, trying to paste a file, regardless of size,
to my network drives ends in disaster. I am sure someone knows something about this but to date,
I have not been able to find anything.
This issue doesn't come up with my main machine or the other 4 on my network as they can all copy/paste
no worries to the network drives, it ONLY happens to the insider machine. Any ideas people?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK, I'll try to explain.
I installed W8 on a new drive to have a fresh install and to test it.
W7 is still on its original drive.
I physically plug in and remove the drives (SATA) accordingly, which ever I want to use on start up, to make sure they don't mess each other up.
I now started to move files from the W7 onto another drive (my backup drive D: )
all the files that were on that drive D: when I installed W8, are seen and accessible by W7 and W8.
But the new files, that I copy to D: from W7 are not seen when I boot with W8. Going back and booting with W7, they are all there.
I can easily transfer the files, by copying them onto a removable drive.

Why can't W8 not see them?

BTW, this happened before, but I wasn't too concerned about it at that time. Some time later the files were seen by W8 and I thought it was just a glitch.

Thanks for any help.

I humbly ask for help. Pardon my ignorance.

After my hard drive was completly fried (empty with no OS) I had the PC guy install a new HD for me and he put on Windows 7.

It never dawned on me to ask him to put on my old files from the BackUp cd's from the Vista OS and today I realized, I HAVE to get that info. My WILL is on these BU cd's (I think they were files only)

1. Can someone take these BU cd's and put them onto the windows 7 hard drive?
If no joy, what is the next or easiest step to retreive my info?

2. If I get/buy a Vista pc, is there a way I can put these on there so I can retreive them?
(If I used my sisters Vista, it would change all the setting's etc, correct and I really
couldn't gracefully get out of that without her knowing so I don't want to do that!)
With an old Vista pc, if I retreive the files that way, could someone be so kind as to instruct me
step by step or image me from putting in the disks and instructing me in laymans terms.
I just gotta get my will!

I appreciate anyone who can take the time to help me in this. Better, easier, whatever works!

Gratefully,
Aleta

I have received over a hundred Mp4 files from a friend's external hard drive - however the files had recently been the victim of a format, and downloaded software was used to restore the files (to my friends HD) - which were then transferred to my hard drive. I've not been able to get them to work. I have tried Windows Media Player, and followed all the prompts for codecs, downloaded them to no avail. I've tried Quicktime (error 2048) , and followed all prompts to get the files working - with no luck. I've downloaded VLC Media Player - no result. I've also tried converting the mp4 files to AVI - they cannot be converted (an error is recorded). I assume the files have been corrupted in their recovery from formatting (?). Is this common when retreiving files?

I cannot accept defeat yet - there is just too many files (1000's hours of video) to be lost. Can anyone help? Thanks very much in advance!

My Hard drive is Buffalo 1tb 2.0 USB - purchased last week.
I'm running Visa.

It sounds like your files are FUBARd; try searching the tools at http://www.videohelp.com/tools
to see if you can find any video correcting apps (MPEG-Corrector.exe is an example). If the headers have been corrupted, then you might be able to restore these and get some of the video back, but it's unlikley that you'll get smooth playback.

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

**edit** but then when i click on the more information and so on it doesnt direct me anywhere useful it just says the codec im trying to install isnt working.

but on the old computer i used to watch them on windows media player, whats goin on ?

if I install the old HDD that is 80gb SATA running XP into the new unit that is also 80GB but running Vista Home Premium
Will one "fight" the other ?

Ideally I would like to have the old HDD with its many files inc the ones I have installed from the back up stick as mentioned.
and use as a expansion storage.
and keep the Vista HDD also.

I am prepared if needed to transfer files over, and wipe the XP one then transfer as required back, files and esp Pictures etc.

would this be a problem and if so what should I do to avoid problems.

I dont use the Machine for Games etc. but it is running at 2gb Ram at present and would be prepared if needed to add more ram (there is room for 4gb) to Board.

Many thanks for your advice in advance.

Windows Insider Build 17120 Let's You Download Files to Host in WDAG

Today Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17120 for PC to insiders in the fast ring. While this release brings some bug fixes, but it's main focus is on improvements to Windows Defender Application Guard and Windows Mixed Reality.

Windows Defender Application Guard changes
Windows Defender Application Guard, or WDAG, allows Windows 10 users to run Microsoft Edge inside a walled off Hyper-V container. This protects the computer from exploit kits and malware by not making the computer's normal file system and applications accessible by Edge.

While this affords greater security, it also makes it harder for users to download files that they wish to use with their normal applications. In this build, Microsoft introduced a new group policy that allows users to download files directly to the host operating system while using WDAG.

To do this, users can go into the Group Policy Editor and navigate to the Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender Application Guard folder. Under the Windows Defender Application Guard folder there is a new policy called "Allow files to download and save to the host operating system from Windows Defender Application Guard".

To enable this policy, double-click on it and select Enabled and then press OK.

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

Hello,
Over the past few weeks, my Windows files have always been getting corrupted. The hard thing is that it is an error every different time saying that some file is missing. For example, today, I did a system restore. I have done this many times and before I got to the setup screen for windows, I got a blue screen that prompted me to restart my PC and it gave me the same error after I restarted. By the way, I have Windows 8.1. Files also get corrupted on Windows 10 for me. I can't find out what the error is but I suspect it is my SSD because files get corrupted before I even install anything. One example of an error was a memory read error. The weird thing is that I had my old SSD replaced by a warranty 2 months ago and 2 weeks after I received the new one and started it, everything started to get corrupted. I have probably restored my PC 30 times this week...

Hello Crimson, and welcome to Sevenforums!

First, what antivirus are you using?

Second, let this scanner run on your computer to search for infected files: Microsoft Safety Scanner - Antivirus | Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free

See if this helps you with any firefox errors: How to Fix Mozilla Firefox | eHow.com

You are never supposed to run 2 or more antiviruses together on a single computer. Also, to remove any antivirus, you may need a special removal tool to make sure you get all the pieces. In addition to your antivirus, consider installing/updating/running (full scan) the free Malwarebytes software. Try disabling your startup items while in Safe Mode. A good, free, easy to use program for this is StartupCPL by Mike Lin. Download the Standalone .EXE version ( http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL_EXE.zip ) Extract it, then double click on it to run it. Don't just uncheck everything using it - try a couple at a time so that you can remember what you did in case you stop something essential. In the event that you do, then just open up StartupCPL and recheck the boxes that you'd unchecked.

I notice that after i run these commands in powershell or cmd: sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} .

and run sfc /scannow again, I always get this. . It seems like my windows is always corrupted and I think that is causing my to get start menu, search menu, and task bar issues after standying by.

Anybody know what's wrong with my computer?

EDIT: I have to do a clean install apparently, also the Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register ?$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml?} command broke my apps.

A:Windows files always corrupted even after repairs?

Hi, running the Powershell command has not been recommended since build 10586 (November) came out.. it tends to break apps. You then see @ before their names in the start menu.

To fix this, you are recommended to do an in-place upgrade repair install (you can find instructions in the Tutorials section).

This will:
- keep most of your settings
- keep your programs
- turn system restore off
- restore all Windows apps
- take up to 2 hours
- lose all Windows updates since the last major build (10586)
- create Windows.old

You need a Windows installation medium.

Noted you have a Radeon card: problems have been reported with one dll related to Nvidia cards as regards the cbs .log. You would have to inspect your log to determine what it says.. but that's irrelevant if you do the repair install.

Post back if you still have your other problem.

Hello to all.

Some unexpected problem recently caused my windows installation to get corrupted and now I want to simply reinstall it and start anew with a fresh install. However, some important files were in the directory where windows is installed and now I'm having some difficulty in getting them out. The windows installation directory was in the local disk C: .

The problem is that I can't boot normally and in safe-mode. I tried using my windows boot cd to try and repair windows. The commands chkdsk, bootcfg /rebuild, fixmbr and fixboot all did not work. I also tried installing windows in another completely unused drive, which was D:. However, when I try to do this, it says that it is checking the hard disks and freezes when it is checking C:, after which I am left with no option but to restart.

The files are inside a folder in C: Drive, outside the WINDOWS Folder, so I was hoping if I could somehow uninstall windows only but can't figure out how to do that.

Right now, I just need a way to copy that folder in C Drive, put it in any of the other drives (D, E or F) and then reformat and reinstall. The OS is Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2.

Is there anyway I can get this done?

Thanks for any help.

A:Need to transfer files. Corrupted windows won't allow me to.

Hi Rydium,

Your best shot might be to make a boot CD that has its own OS self contained. Booting to one of those will allow you to copy your files if they are still readable on the drive.

A BartPE CD or a Linux live CD would do that. Google for those and you'll get plenty of instructions.

There are other ways too but they are command line driven and pretty clumsy for most folks.

There is a possibility that your files will not be visible due to media damage, file system corruption, disk errors, or missing system permissions.

You could also slave the drive in another computer and see if the files are readable.

Good luck. Post back if you have questions.

Even though I am new to MT Bleeping Computer forum, I am sure that this is not the first time my issue has been raised. I have been trying to download recent updates from Java and I keep getting a 1603 Error message. After doing some research, I have determined that I have several Windows system corrupted files; I have determined this by running the sfc scannow tool and the report shows several files that could not be repaired. Now I am stuck because I am not sure how to correctly repair these files.I am running Windows 7, and I am current with all Window updates. I have a Dell computer with a AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core Processor 2.30 GHz, Installed Memory 4.00 GB, and a 64-bit operating system.Do you have any ideas that I can fix these files, I have uploaded the sfc report for your review. Thanks for any given help.Lobo43

A:Windows 7 Corrupted System Files

You might want to have a look at this. It appears a recent Windows Update may be the culprit here, based on the files SFC couldn't repair:
utc.app.json
telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json

http://techish.net/cannot-repair-member-file-utc-app-json-microsoft-update-kb3022345-b0rken/
You may want to just uninstall update KB3022345, and try to reinstall it later.

I'm a little more worried by the fact that cmd.exe can't be repaired.
You may have to copy this file from a computer that has the exact same OS version and the exact same hardware architecture.
More on how to do that is here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833#manually%20repair

I'm going to put my previous post regarding my problems with corrupted DLL files following a clean install after a major crash. This is for background purposes:
[[Just finished a clean install of Windows XP Home. Computer had black screen with error message. I made several attempts at repairing system using the original install disk. Did multiple malware and virus sweeps. Finally got it working again but it refused to update Windows Security files, constant crashes, hangs, etc. After more repair attempts and malware sweeps gave up and did clean install after backing up my files.

After spending 12 hours on the process of the clean install, installing antivirus software, browsers and security updates, the most recent Windows updates were installed as I restarted (for the 679th time today) whereupon the next bootup was preceded by the computer running CHKDSK on the blue screen. It tried to continue the boot, then went into a cycle of rebooting after the Windows loading screen (before you enter your personal account). Everytime this happened, I saw a blue screen with white type flashing by for a fourth of a second. I couldn't start in safe mode, but I managed to stop the automatic restart and here's what the message on the blue screen said:

I see two partitions one for the operating system and one for storage. The one that has the operating system asks to be formated as soon as I turn on the docking station. I can't format it because I have programs and files that are in there that I need to use. I know there has to be a fix for this. I've got a hdd that had the majority of the Windows and My Documents files sent to the Recycling Bin. The hdd gets a NTLDR error message when I try to boot from it, I've tried repairing the boot.ini, the ntdetect.com, and the NTLDR files, but it still gives the same error message. Basically, Windows is screwed and unrecoverable. The issue is however that I need to get the My Documents files from out of the Recycling Bin. I've tried booting the hdd as a slave on my computer and going into the C:\Recycler file but all it does is show the files that are in my master's Recycling Bin. I know these files are in the Recycling Bin on the slave drive, god knows SOMEWHERE, but I can't figure out how to get to them. Can anyone help me on this? Please? Pretty please?

About half a year ago, give or take, I ordered a Windows 8 OEM disk to install on my laptop. Machine runs fine, even upgrading to the 8.1 Preview and eventually to 8.1, and dual-booting Ubuntu GNOME. Life is good.

The most recent system update, however, continuously fails for some reason, giving me no error messages.
I've tried running sfc /scannow and DISM commands, but both of those fail, saying that there are corrupted system files preventing them from working.

The normal way to fix corrupted system files with Windows 8 would be to Refresh. However, I can't refresh with my install disk because it's not an 8.1 disk. I've tried using the trick with creating a useable ISO file, but that trick fails because the Product Key I'm using is a developer's license, not retail.

Any more ideas without starting from scratch? Thanks in advance.

hi Gang,

I don't know how it happened, I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.

However virus scan updates appear to be fine.

What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract.

I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft.

If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows

I get this error messge:

So windows 8 was trying to install an update like it does every couple days but kept failing and undoing changes, this process had become very annoying due to this being a new laptop, anyway yesterday the update failed but the computer stopped working so i had to switch it off. i turned it back on and it went to 35% download done and then just skipped it.
once i logged on the computer was running like a slug, could barely open anything on the computer.
i ran it in safe mode and spent most of the day trying to figure it out but im not great with computers so i got to the point of making (sfc.details) folder and finding the errors.
im not really sure where to go from here and would really appreciate some help.

Here's the situation...

1) Computer was running very slowly. I re-booted, thinking that might help.

2) Since that time, it won't boot Windows. I just see the Dell symbol on startup (it's a 1.5 year old XPS 8900 with no serious prior problems) and then it goes to a new screen and says it doesn't have a bootable drive.

3) So...I ran diagnostics (both on my own, and then a Dell tech told me to do the same things). It's supposedly not a hardware problem. Instead, Windows 10 is the issue. So I had them overnight me an installation disk (it came pre-installed, so I didn't have the CD before).

4) It's VERY important to me to save my files if possible. Some are for work, some are family photos...some are backed up, but some from the last couple months are not (I just haven't been diligent enough about that). The computer has two internal drives...1 TB main drive with Windows AND some valuable files on it...and another 2 TB drive which is a backup and where I store most of my photos (my side job is photography so I generate a ton of files every year). I would really love to recover both if possible.

5) Called Dell again tonight after I got the installation disk in the mail, and the tech unfortunately didn't really know what he was doing...after just one failed attempt to reset the computer WITHOUT losing files, he immediately wanted to give up and click the "scorched earth" (delete everything) option. I talked him out of that, and he said the other op... Read more

I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a HP Envy Notebook. I am able to boot into Windows and had no apparent problems when everything froze up yesterday while working in Quicken. After waiting several minutes with no change and and unresponsive keyboard and touchscreen, I pressed control/alt/del, and I got a (blank) BSOD. After waiting several more minutes, I pressed the button down for several seconds to turn off the notebook, removed battery, reinserted battery and then turned the the notebook back on. After rebooting into Windows, there were no apparent problems. I decided to run sfc scannow and discovered that there are several corrupted files that cannot be repaired. I ran the scan several times, rebooting each time, but the corrupted files persisted. Where do I go from here? Thank you.
BTW, in the Event Viewer there were no application errors. I did see several MCUpdate errors which began on 7/9 (today is 7/14). Again, thank you for any help. I'm not very computer literate, so I have no idea where to go from here and am hoping I do not have to do a reinstallation. I do have the HP rescue discs, however, that I burned when I got the computer, along with a thumb drive that enables me to boot up, although, again, I have no problem booting into windows.
I use Firefox, never Windows Explorer FWIW. Thanx.

Hello, I currently run win 8.1 and my original disc is for win 8.0 as I upgraded via win updates to 8.1. As I was not able to start Win Defender I ran an sfc san from the prompt to see if I had any corrupted sys files. The scan showed I did have corrupt files and that I needed to put my original disc in to fix them. My problem is that my disc is for win 8,0 not 8.1. When I try to use 8,0 I get the error :this disc is not valid".
I know I can create media via windows download center for 8.1 but my download speed is so slow (via cell phone tower) that it never completes. I was just very lucky to get updates for 8.1 via win updates. I live in the Philippines, broadband is just not available here.
I ran the sfc scan and will post the results in an upload. Can you tell from this that my system is ok? If not, how can I repair the bad files without media?
I know defender will not run if another virus program is on the pc. But I uninstalled all other virus programs and it still will not run. I think maybe other virus programs invalidate some sys files when they are installed.
Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

Hey there,

I (my wife) is running Windows 7 Home Premium (64). Windows explorer crashes when:

-Searching with more than 4 characters in the start menu
-Opening the Network and Sharing Center
-Various other times that seem unrelated

I have attempted:

-Startup repair X3 : it catches problems but doesn't repair them
-sfc /scannow command : also catches problems, and the CDA log shows all of the corrupted files.
-Copying the system32 files from a fresh windows install to fix the broken dll files while in another os : this didn't seem to have any affect
-System Restore doesn't have any images before the issue began
-Full system antivirus and malware scan and rootkit detection with no results showing (doesn't rule it out, but I used Norton commercial, Mbits, Lavasoft, and Kapersky online all in safemode, and some rootkit detectors)
-Repair Install : hangs when initiated
-Updating windows to SP1 : it seems the system attempted to update some time ago and failed or was interrupted. Now SP1 won't install, the updater hangs
-in an attempt to fix the windows update hanging issue, I tried:
-Installing the system update readiness tool (Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [September 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center) : the update hangs too

Hi all,

A few days ago I started receiving an error message when turning on my HP G6 laptop (os Windows 7).  The error message is system error 90b which states that my computer fan is not working. I checked and I was still under warranty so I called HP to see what they could do.  HP support told me that my fan had not failed but a virus had infected and corrupted my windows files and then proceeded to show me my event log which was full of errors and warning messages. In addition when I check which services are currently running, more than half of the Microsoft Services have been stopped (seen in the Microsoft Configuration window). Since then I have tried multiple things to fix this:

1: Numerous virus scans, all which come back clean
2: Ran Combofix
3: System Restore
4: And finally a full reformat.

None of this solved anything. I am still receiving the error message when turning on my computer and the Microsoft Services are still labeled stopped.

HP support said this was a virus so I figured I would post here and see if the experts here had any information they could give me.

Thanks in advance,
