Q: I Can't Activate Any Anti-virus Software On My Windows Vista - HijackThis Log Added.

Hello Everyone,

Nice to be here and thanks for the effort you guys are making. My computer is certainly infected by a virus that has made it impossible for me to activate any anti-virus program. It is also impossible for me to upgrade to Windows Vista SP 2. Below is the log file from "HijackThis". Can someone please analyse this for me and tell me what changes to make?

Thanks for your input.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm typing this from my laptop.
The house PC got infected with that sorta virus and I want to know how to fix it.
I noticed a lot of users have this sorta virus but idk if each case is unique or if its a general sorta case.

I'm going to try this:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic229334.html

But I want to make sure that it won't kill my computer if it isn't exactly the same xD And if it doesn't work I'll come back here.
A lot of users have the same case as me I think - malware trying to make me activate some sorta anti-spyware program or something, random lewd internet pop-ups, warnings, also the task bar has like 500 windows update icons. There are two windows that I can't move - one says ATTENTION! SPYWARE ALERT! with a shield and all that, and the other says Antivirus Software Alert and is in the bottom right hand corner. They both have that windows shield on the bar where theres usually an X and all that, and both bars are red. Also that little windows error thing that has the "application cannot be executed..."
Task Manager won't start either.
:3 please help. In the mean time I might try that forum's suggestion cause we're kinda restless and we're not sure if it gets worse the longer you wait or whatever (also the task bar is freaking me out/making me mad. too many icons eating my start bar).

Hello,

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit protected by the AVG 7.5 anti-virus suite. My question is: what is the best software for me to use for Vista, in terms of initial loading time, concise user interface and level of detection?

I am willing to pay any sum of money as long as my 3 home computers are protected. My AVG 7.5 license has expired and before I renew it, I want to make sure that it is worth doing.

Thanks for your help and time on this matter

Hellio All,
I've just installed the vista beta 2 32bit edition but my problem is i can't seem to get any anti virus software installed. I usually use NTL Netguard but the driver needed for installation of this will not install. I have tried also the Recommended anti virus that windows security centre links you up to but this also is saying that it is an unsupported platform i'm trying to install onto. Can anybody recommend some anti virus TRIAL software that will work on my edition of windows? Thanks a million.

To anyone who can help,

My girlfriend recently downloaded and installed F-secure anti-virus software on to her laptop that's running Vista. However, when it came to validating the subscription key it threw up a message saying that it could not connect to the server and told us to check the internet connection. There is absolutely no problem with the internet connection as I'm obviously online right now. This is a problem because the product will stop working after 6 days if we can't validate it and the virus definitions are now very old. She also experienced a problem connecting to the update server with a free AVG anti-virus software which led me to think maybe it's a setting in vista that is the problem. I'm also running f-secure on my desktop but that is running XP and I have no problems updating that.

Hope there's someone who can help.

Hello

I am converting a Win 7 PC into Win 8.1 by doing a fresh install.

I was told that on Win7 that Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) + Malwarebytes Premium is a good combination
Should I upgrade to Win 8 or re-install Win 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

However it now seems that MSE is built into Windows 8.1 !

ALSO I was told that running more than one anti-virus software at once is a mistake.

Does this mean that we do not need anything for anti-virus/anti-malware other than possibly Malwarebytes Premium?

thanks

J

A:Does Windows 8.1 still need an anti-virus software?

Hi,
Here is what works for me:

1.) Built in Windows defender
2.) UAC
3.) restrictive Windows firewall by using *GROUP POLICY* ( outbound and inbound )
4.) using standard account only ( never Admin )
5.) install only signed and verified applications
6.) and the most important, be careful while surfing ( the links u click )

If you follow these steps you'll most likely never be infected and probably don't even need to scan your PC.

Hi everyone, this is for Jack Bauer. Hi Jack you helped me before and it was great advice. This time I would like to know what is the best totally free antivirus software that uses the least MB or Ram? I am trying to free up Memory, I now have Panda Cloud and it just uses so much Memory so would like to try something else. I know that I need something that updates regularly so if you could send me in the right direction I would so appreciate it. There are so many out there, they all say free download, but then you are fooled into thinking it is free then to try to get all of that stuff back out of your computer so it won't make the problem worse. I decided to ask you first this time. Thank You So Very Much Joanne

We have discussed this subject many times in this forum. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Please read:Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramHere are links to some recent BC discussion topics with opinions from other members:Looking for recommended anti-virus softwaresWhat is the best antivirus protection? What's the best premium security suite in the market currently?Recommend a good free antivirus programWhich antivirus and malware programs should I use together?Antivirus Solution? Here are links to polls about this very subject:Poll: Best Antivirus and FirewallPoll: Best Anti-Spyware/Anti-Malware/On-Demand ScannerMy personal recommendation is ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus if choosing a paid for program as it leaves a small footprint...meaning it is not intrusive and does not utilize a lot of system resources. A couple of weeks ago windows security centre started popping up messages saying "Your firewall status is unknown" and "Anti-virus might not be installed".

I have been running Zone alarm and AVG-free for several years now. I also run Spy-bot S&D. I suspected some kind of virus which these couldn't detect so I've installed and scanned with the following over the past couple of weeks:

Windows Defender
Kaspersky online scan
Panda antivirus
SpywareBlaster
AVG-anti root kit
Root kit revealer
Hijack this
F-secure internet security
StopZilla
AdAware
UnHackMe/Reanimator

Security centre didn't detect any of the antivirus programs.

With the help of the people at Greatis (reanimator) i've managed to remove a couple of problems but security centre still doesn't detect antivirus.

In the event log I've noticed a message which has been occuring since June:

The Windows Security Center Service was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor third party AntiVirus and Firewall.

But I haven't been able fix this. The WMI service and RPC service are both running and restarting them doesn't solve the problem.

Any ideas are what to do now would be greatly appreciated.

A:Windows did not find anti virus software on this computer

In my efforts to find out if wmi or security centre were corrupt in some way i came across this great script:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...p/wmidiag.mspx

It has turned up 6 WMI security errors about default trustees being removed. I'll have a closer look at trying to fix these problems tomorrow though.

The redirects have stopped but i still got the text appearing yesterday, but today it has stopped since i disabled my Comodo CIS av and firewall (i'm now using Toolwiz Timefreeze).

First question is Windows Defender on W7 the same as Microsoft Security Essentials?

Is w7 Windows Defender and firewall as good as these commercial Anti virus software?

Is there a malware removal tool built into W7 and is it common to need online support?

Thanks

Billy personally I would not rely on that and if you want a fairly good real time AV then pick one out from this listing Free Windows Desktop Software Security List - Realtime Protection | Gizmo's Freeware personally I would not recommend the AVG, Norton 360, or McAfee.

Hi

I just bought my first ever smartphone (yes, I've been living under a rock) - the iphone 5s. I'm after recommendations for good software to protect it, free if possible.

I've looked in the itunes store and the options for anti-virus seem limited. The Mcafee app gets bad reviews and the others I've never heard of, and/or have no reviews. any suggestions would be great.

On the anti-malware front, i can't seem to find anything in itunes store when i try to search. I like the Malwarebytes anti-Malware program for my laptop, but unless I'm mistaken the only mobile app they have is for Androids, not iphones. Again, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

A:Good anti-virus and anti-malware software for iphone 5s

The reason they have more anti-virus apps for Android is because the Android platform is more vulnerable to malware. On Android, you are able to download and install a variety of things from unknown sources.

For the iPhone, however, anti-virus isn't really needed unless you have jailbroken your device.

Hope this helped.

It seems that I have removed almost all of the damage it did to my computer, by following the directions in this post, from a person who has the exact same problem as me: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/161834/window-security-alert-keeps-popping-up-saying-i-my-computer-is-infected/I did everything in that post, twice, as well as running SmiFraudFixI then did every thing on the prep page (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html) to the last detail. The Stinger found many viruses that it would not remove, only list, and I do not knw why my fully updated Symantec cannot find them. I have spent over 12 hours on this, and I am at my wit's end... considering a format & reinstall, but I do not have my original Windows disk...I am still getting the pop-up security alerts, and my virus program keeps catching IEDefender.Should I post a ComboFix or HiJackThis log? My d/l rate and computer speed has slowed significantly since installing all all this third party software. Please help! Thunder seems to have this down.Mod Edit: Topic moved from HJT to more appropriate forum~ TMacK

Hi folks I just installed win 8.1 and I'm wondering if I really really need antivirus and anti spam software. With win 7 I had eset smart security 5 and it worked well but I'm wondering if win 8.1's firewall and defender software is enough to keep me as well protected as eset's smart security 5 software.

I'm a regular guy who checks email, goes on various forums, surfs porn and downloads movies and games.

Would windows defender and firewall be enough to protect me?

A:Anti virus and anti spam software necessary

Anti-Virus is always a good idea. Windows Defender is not very effective at detecting/removing malware.

Some of the options we are considering are: staying with Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, Microsoft Security Essentials. I am looking for some guidance in selecting the best program for our situation. Can anybody help??

I recently ran into a situation where a rogue anti-virus application was still being reported by Windows Security Center as being installed even though it had been removed. Someone else here experienced a similar issue.

After doing much web searching, I managed to stumble across this page:

http://www.pchell.com/support/multiple_antivirus_in_security_center.shtml

it provides steps on resetting the Windows Security Center catalog it uses to "know" which anti-virus apps are installed or not. This info is also useful if you've uninstalled one legit anti-virus app and are trying to install another legit one. In the event a legit anti-virus app doesn't do a "clean" uninstall, the steps on that page can help Windows Security Center recognize the old app is no longer installed.

I have done this on the Windows XP system I mentioned above and it worked well. I started this thread to make others aware of this in the event they are fighting with Windows Security Center erroneously reporting multiple anti-virus apps being installed.

I have NOT tested this procedure on multiple systems or different releases of Windows so if you decide to give this a try, USE CAUTION!

Peace...

A:Info on correcting incorrect anti-virus software reported by Windows Security Center

I wanted to add that you can take care of this manually in XP:
1. Click on the Start menu.
2. Select Run...
3. Type wbemtest and click OK
4. Connect to root\SecurityCenter
5. Click on Query
6. Type in or copy/paste SELECT * FROM AntiVirusProduct and click on Apply

If there is more than one result, it means there is more than one Antivirus program installed. Double click on each result to view the properties for that Antivirus product. Identify the product(s) installed and DELETE any records for an Antivirus software that is no longer installed.
For the firewall listing you would have to query SELECT * FROM FirewallProduct

Hi,

I'm running 32 bit Vista and my computer is infected with a trojan, I think. Basically, there is a little Windows type symbol in the bottom of my screen that keeps popping up and saying things like;
Code:
"Windows Security has detected spyware/adware"
Code:
"Your computer is infected! It is recommended you run a spyware tool"
And there is also a pop up in the main part of my screen that says;
Code:
CRITICAL ERROR! System halted as a result of the critical kernel error.
As per the instructions in one of the sticky threads, I downloaded and ran HiJackThis and this is what's in the notepad file.

Hi. My name is Paul Benjamin. I was wondering...I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR550U laptop, and was wondering what is the best anti-virus/security software for my operating system. Right now I am running AVG Free version, but I am with Cox Communications so I have a free McAfee Security Suite that is offered via Cox. I have five other people that are running wireless laptops on my home network. I have three computers that are desktops that are directly connected. I am just worried about viruses and safety. Some of the people on my network are very computer illiterate so they don't really understand computer security. In your opinion, what would be best for my computer to protect me? Thank you so much for your time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. :-)

The latest Antivirus comparisons are available at AV-Comparatives here.http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stor...vc_report26.pdfNothing is 100% and the most important thing is the education of your people on the machines as to what to avoid and what to do if something untoward happens.

Hmm was thinking of going back to Zone Alarm as I used it for years and loved it, HOWEVER after reading the post on "Recomendation against Zone Alarm Firewall http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic159724.html" I am up in the air of which one to use.
Any advice on firewalls would much appreciated.

Anti-Virus software

What antivirus software is recommended?
I have used AVG for years then went to avast couple years ago (I actually use full versions not the free ones lol) I am wondering should I stick with avast or go to a new one as I got 15 days left on my license.

I searched the internet and according to "Top10Reviews http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/v2/" BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011 is the best anti-virus software.

OR would it be good to go with something like Norten Security (I am not a real Norton fan but I want what is best for my computer.

Again any advice would much appreciated.

A:Anti-Virus Software & Firewall Software - need advice

I had Norton pre-installed on my computer when I got it and I honestly dont like it. .. it seemed to cause more problems than it solved for me.

I use Avast! Antivirus and reccomend it to friends/family. It has a free eddition you can download and trial if you're unsure. You can get a free yearly subscription which is easy to renew when needed. I have never had a problem with Avast and think it might be a good starting point.

So i tried to remove digital protection with malwarebyte, while I also had total vista security rogue anti virus as well. The problem was that total vista messed up some of my legit files so i deleted them such as a win32 file. After mawarebyte scan, I deleted some files, but then when i restarted my computer, I got some window saying i lost some data or something like that and windows will attempt to restore last date that my computer worked. So i let my computer restore my computer settings to an earlier date and then when I log back in, total vista and digital protection was removed?

I don't know if they are removed just from a system recovery, so i need some advice. After the recovery, I tried the instructions on deleting total vista, but when I renamed process explorer to iexplorer.exe, it doesn't open up, because my computer recognized it as illegal instructions.

EDIT:

So far i am having no pop ups of the rogue anti virus software, but are they hiding??

Hi Vay,I would suspect that the malware is still there, but hasn't had a chance to run yet. Unfortunately, it will probably pop up some time in the near future. However, if you aren't currently having any symptoms, that makes it easier to do the common scans that will probably remove the rogue for you.Start off by using TFC by Old Timer which will clean out any temp files that might be left over from the pre-restore infection.Follow this guide here on how to remove Digital Protection. Then:Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. An icon will be created on your desktop. If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Hi,

I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 on a Compaq Mini netbook and recently got infected with a trojan or a virus. I've been trying to clean it for a while with no luck. It used to asked me to buy a fake antivirus software, but it doesn't do it anymore. It may be the MSBlaster trojan.

When I try to open it in safe mode, it closes all the antivirus programs including hijackthis and malwarebytes.

I tried renaming malwarebytes and run it but did not work. It stats scanning and closes after 5 seconds.

Even in safe mode, there is a suspicious program in task manager named 472196741:2061097699.exe which I can not kill using task manager.

None of the network connections (including internet) do not work on the computer but I have another laptop to transfer files through a USB.

I was able to get the full DDA log, but the virus closed the GMER application once it was done scanning which makes me not able to get the GMER log.

Please help!

Thanks

My computer (running XP) has been claiming it needs windows updates lately (every day). It's not the same pop up anti virus trojan that was more common a few years ago. It's a legitimate Automatic update. However it never seems to update and it often restarts my computer with no option of me being able to cancel. I can only delay it for fifteen minutes. Seems to only happen in the morning AM period. Lately programs have been running funny and freezing up more than I ever noticed before. My Netflix stopped working and when I went to restart my computer it said it was trying to shut down a program called "XCP" which it could not. My computer hasn't been crashing or locking up it's just suddenly acting off and that new XCP program and the constant need for updates has me suspicious. Also my Norton 360 not working correctly. I haven't had any problems in a long time and I was hoping someone could help. I have been here once before (I lost my old password and e-mail I used) and it was a great experience. thanks.

A:Possible Virus. Anti virus software not functioning. Mysterious XCP file

I don't have a complete solution, just some thoughts that might help for now.
Whatever antivirus program you use, make sure it is always up to date. Some people purchase norton or mcaffee, or they get it with their computer purchase... then, the license runs out and they just use it without it being updated. I don't know if that's your situation at all but, figured it was worth mentioning.
IF you're ever stuck with an outdated AV program, there are free ones you can use instead.
If Norton is still licensed, see if you can run an update.

I'd also suggest Malwarebytes if you don't use that already. Download the free version, install it, update it, then run a scan. In most cases, a quick scan is sufficient. I'd start with that. If Norton has been running funny, chances are you will find something malwarebytes would like to remove for you.

Lastly... if this windows update is legit, and it's constantly doing this... I would guess that the update is failing ever time. What I'd suggest is making sure your AV is up to date, running malwarebytes, and then if that helps, do the windows update manually... You can poke around and see the update history and maybe you'll find the one that's failing.
sometimes updating manually will help you find updates you didn't even know were available and find the ones that might be causing trouble. Keeping windows up to date is important. Sometimes an update will make a big difference when ... Read more

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help.

I have been through the whole Preparation Guide and have the logs ready to post here.

I have a computer, running windows XP that has a virus or malware that disables or shuts down anti virus software or other programs. I had some trouble getting the GMER scan to complete since it would run for hours then shut down at some point. So after 3 attempts I saved the initial findings that load and have them here to post.

I have no idea what type of virus this is, so I need help determining what to do next.

I have attached the Attach.txt file (from the DDS scan) as well as the ark.txt file from the GMER scan.

Thanks,
DaddyOf3

The previous poster of this issue had his post closed after receiving his system restore disks without actually beating the virus and I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms as he had, so here's his post, please help me, I would rather not wait for disks.

My desktop computer contracted a virus, and it's unlike one I've ever dealt with. It seems to be affecting the computer in two ways:

1) When I use Internet Explorer and search Google for something and click on a link, it re-directs to a different website -- usually one about some sort of anti-virus software. It doesn't seem to be affecting Firefox at all, though. Searches and links are just fine there.

2) It prevents any currently installed anti-virus software from running a scan, or any new anti-virus software or anti-spyware software from installing. I had Norton installed, and when I tried to run a scan, it would look like it was running a scan, but nothing happened. I tried installing other anti-virus software (after un-installing Norton) and running anti-virus scans on the internet (like Trendmicro) and nothing worked. It either sat idle like Norton did, or it causes the computer to go to a blue screen and then shut down.

I've perused various forums for a solution, and most of the solutions involve running some sort of anti-virus or anti-spyware program, or programs like HijackThis, and none of these will run on my infected computer.

I also tried to restore the system back to factory settings, but it seems as th... Read more

bump >_>Hello KBM,While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large, as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Athough our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, you wouldn't want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it, would you?We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of... Can't figure this one out. Have tried AVG, MBAM, NortonEraser, TDSSKiller, TrendMicro, nothing seems to be able to catch this thing. It redirects to various pay-per-click ad revenue sites, livesearchnow is fairly common but not exclusive. Any help finally pinning this sucker and annihilating it would be extremely appreciated.

A:Browser Redirect Virus - not detected by anti-virus software

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top o... I have a relative whose resources are limited. They are upgrading from an older Windows XP PC to a newer Windows 7 PC. They want to transfer files from the old PC to the new one. We may use a bridged USB cable to do this, or we may use an external hard drive that belongs to me.

I use the external hard drive on a PC that uses the Linux operating system, but I have used the hard drive on a Windows XP PC. So I think a Windows PC can mount the external hard drive.

The older PC is scanned frequently by an anti-virus program that says it has identified potential threats, but it cannot eliminate them. SO WE ARE CONCERNED THE OLDER PC IS INFECTED.

QUESTIONS: What would be the best anti-virus program to use in the new Windows 7 PC to scan the transferred files for viruses, etc?

I have been told if I use my external hard drive, that I do not have to worry about Windows viruses infecting my own Linux-based PC, is this correct?

I have also been told I could scan the copied files on my external drive with "Clam AV" before transferring them to the new machine, is this good advice?

Any other comments would be welcomed.

Thank you,

CCT
