Cannot find server or dns error AND Logon

Q: Cannot find server or dns error AND Logon

I have no idea what happened but some people were on my computer this weekend and now whenever I go to logon to sites that bring up the grey login box I get the following blank screen and message, Cannot find server or dns error. I have tried reloading IE and even went to roomates computer and where the site works and changing the settings. It works with Netscape just not with IE. The website in particular is www.intertops.com but there are several others that won't let me logon. Please advise.

Preferred Solution: Cannot find server or dns error AND Logon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have optimum online dsl, I reformatted my hard drive & restarted everything. Everything installed fine. I loaded the drivers for the modem, & installed everything. I try to logon to Internet explorer, I get a error message "cannot find server". I pinged my ip address it went through fine. But, I still cannot connect to the internet. I really need some help.

A:Cannot find server when I try to logon to IE

Sounds like a DNS issue.

Try this: Ping www.sunlitsurf.com.

If that works, then try to ping 12.26.124.6 (the IP of Sunlitsurf.com)

Let me know what happens and we'll go from there....

I visited the web site of a Boston radio station (WBZ) that allows visitors to listen online. I failed to be able to get "hooked-up" to the live broadcast, but after leaving the site I no longer can open any web sites. I think it tried to load an ActiveX file during the process. Now I get a "page cannot be displayed" and "server cannot be found, DNS Error" for any site I try to go to. I am running Windows XP and IE 6. However, my email program works fine. In addition, I have Norton antivirus and Lavasoft on my machine (I've run both programs and neither found any viruses or spyware). I can run "live update" and download DAT files from both these software maker's sites. So, I do have a working connection. I also have an HTML editor software program and can preview web pages in IE that reside on my hard drive. So, IE seems to be working, but thinks I have no connection. Does anyone know what would be causing this, and if so, how I can fix the problem. Thanks.

Hi guys! Im a tech support agent myself. I had this customer w a weird problem I couldnt solve.
Basically I only wanted to access the router settings page with IE6 to configure the wireless network. It came up with this error: "Cannot find server or DNS error".
The router is sending the correct information to the PC (IP address, default gateway).

So here is what I did so far:
-Removed dial up networks, ticked automatically detect settings
-Deleted cookies, temp files
-restored defaults in advanced settings
-disabled firewall
-reinstalled IE6
-disabled / enabled network adapter (ethernet)

Getting the same message over and over again.

I think this shouldnt matter but still its an info: the customer is actually not live yet w the broadband service.

OS is XP..not sure but probably SP2.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

This one is weird. I use the AOL version of IE5 to connect to the net, then minimize that and fire up the original, which I prefer. Lately however, although the AOL version has no problems opening web pages, I can`t use the original at all. It keeps bringing up the message Cannot find server. I have been restarting Windows to solve the problem, until I close the IE window, then if I try to use it again, up comes the error message. Now even with a restart it won`t work.

I have IE5.50 with SP2, using Windows 98, Compaq, 64 meg ram.

2 things to try .

------------------------------------------------------------------

Try choice 2 .

W95 you have 3 choices . With W98 , if you have IE5.1 or higher & you still have IE4 installed the following applies . No IE4 only 2 choices .
IE5.5 if over the top of 5.1 , offers 3 choices .

You can install IE5.1 straight over 4 . A big feature with IE5 is that
it can be repaired without uninstalling . Here is how to do it . Open Control Panel , Add / Remove , click on Microsoft Internet Explorer , then click on add / remove down the bottom . This opens a window with 3 choices .

No Microsoft Internet Explorer in Control Panel !
Start>Run , key in msinfo32 and press Enter . Click on Tools >
IE Repair Tool .

W2000 > Start > Run
then enter exactly (case/space-sensitive)
rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE

Hello.. I just joined here, so I don't know if this is in the right place, so sorry if it isn't, but I just took a guess..

I run Windows XP, Home edition. I odered a game recently, and I was deleting a LOT of stuff from my harddrive, because I didn't need that stuff(I went from 4.67gb of space, to 17.6gb.. so that's quite a bit).. I haven't even gotten the game, so don't assume that the installation of the game was my problem

Anyway. So after deleting about 13GB of junk off of my harddrive, I tried to go to a website.. and (I use Mozilla Firefox) got the "www.google.com cannot be found. Please check the name and try again" and I tried my other favorites, and none worked, so I figured it was a Firefox problem. I tried IE(Oh how I hate it) and got a Page cannot be displayed error.. At the bottom, I see the message of
"Cannot find server or DNS error". I tried google'ing it(On my other computer) and there were some forums that had sugguestions of how to fix it, none of them worked.. System restore does not work. I did the obvious "hey bud, try restarting the computer" method.. nothing.. I tried busting out some CDs that came with the computer(from summer of '03) which didn't work either. So I'm quite stumped. I tried asking on another forum(Not so official, but one I frequent), they just said "ooh try restarting" and "Did you try system restore?"

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Hi Experts,
I was given a new EPC mini book running Windows Embedded 6.0 and can't surf the web. I have successfully connected to my home WiFi and have excellent signal strength. When I attempt to open Internet Explorer I get the "cannot find server or DNS error" regardless of what web site I try to find. (The default is set to google.com BTW.)

Originally, the DNS number was empty on the mini book so I entered the number that's on my desktop. I have also tried it with "assign from DHCP" on and off. I rebooted each time to initiate the changes, but had no luck.

I did check the Microsoft site and saw lots of bug fixes for WinCE listed, but don't know which if any of those I need to download. I tried to ask Microsoft for support but will have to pay big bucks because I don't know the registration number of my OS. (The OS was preloaded on the mini book and I don't find the registration number when I look at system info like I can on my desktop.)

Does anyone know how to get the product registration number on one of these so I can bug Microsoft? Or better yet, does anyone know how to fix the DNS error?

Finally, I'm a stay at home mom whose been neglecting her kids a little while trying to get this minibook working. My kids and I will thank you for any help you can give!

I would try narrow it down to whether or not it is a machine based issue or an issue affecting your home network. Try connecting another computer and see if it experiences the same issues. if so perhaps your internet gateway has issues

Hey guys and gals, first time posting here. I've searched everywhere and cannot seem to find an answer that solves my problem.

I have just recently installed a new computer with Windows 7 and use either FireFox or IE. Both are fully updated to latest patches. The problem I'm having is that certain sites, but definitely not all, will throw a DNS error at me and say the server cannot be found. I am on a network with similar machines and mine is the only one that cannot access these sites. I have run Malwarebytes (both basic and full) and found nothing amiss on my computer that way. So now I am turning to you for help.

Thanks.

Any suggestions? I have checked with my ISP (Cox Communications) and there is no restriction on how many computers I can add, using a router box.

I have a few computers (running XP) behind a local gateway server (running 2003 Server). The internet doesn't work on one of the computers. Internet Explorer and Outlook don't work (they don't get past the server). I can "ping google.com" without problem and any communication between this computer and the server works fine (ruling out hardware failure). I had this same problem several months ago and after hours of trying to solve it, I gave up; only to find the problem gone the next day and everything working fine.

A:Cannot find server or DNS error

On this one computer, is there a firewall? Your web browser and mail client may not have permission to access the internet.

Hello All,

I hope that someone can help me. I am using Windows XP home and IE 6.02 with SP 2. Whenever I try to go to check my Yahoo mail I get the following error "Cannot find server or DNS Error" and notice that the computer is trying to connect to site 1.0.0.0.

I had a temporary fix by adding the Yahoo IP address to the hosts file, but it seems to not be working anymore.

I have run the most recent Spyboy and have a up to date version of Norton AntiVirus running.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the 'The page cannot be displayed' thing when trying to go to Yahoo 360? I thought maybe it was a problem with my computer, but I'm not sure now. I also thought it might be a temporary server issue with Yahoo, but it's been about a week now with the same results. Yahoo of course will proabably never get back to me so thought I'd post it here and see. At the bottom of the 'The page cannot be displayed' page it says: Cannot find server or DNS Error. Any ideas?

Hi-
Windows XP
IE/AOL

So we recently created a network in the house here, and I am able to connect to the network through my wireless card (I use a laptop).

Unfortunately, anytime I open IE or AOL's web browser, I get the page that says at the top "The page cannot be displayed" and at the bottom "Cannot find server or DNS Error". There was a problem with my registry in terms of the firewall, but I fixed that (used a walkthrough I found somewhere - I really am not that technical). So it seems to me there is a lingering issue with the registry, and I understand this can be lingering effects of a virus or spyware.

Please help me as best you can. Thanks.
Matt

I am running into some very strange problems with the my IE 6 and been searching the forum but can't find anything exactly like it.

I have both a laptop and desktop (win 98) connected to the internet through cable modem. The laptop is running XP and now certain sites are unable to connet to the website, while the desktop can. I can connect to most sites such as yahoo but then certain links such as yahoo mail (similar occurances with microsoft website too) I would then get the error page. Some times when I type in a known good address it doesn't find it either.

I have already ran "spybot" to remove the adware factor. Also just bought "Norton Internet security 2004 w/ antivirus". The firewall is now up and no virus either. Please look through my hijackthis and let me know how I can fix the problem. Thanks in advance.

I hope someone can help me. I use AOL and am currently using Broadband Cable/DSL modem through Mediacom. I connect through both. Then all of a sudden my Home Page in Internet Options was hijacked. I can change it in Spybot though. But now I cannot connect to IE at all, even if I change my home page. I use IE 6.0 and the initial setup was installed by Dell. I have a Dell Dimension 4100 running Win2000 Prof. I have contacted Dell & AOL and have done everything they've said except reinstall IE 6.0. Since it was initially installed by Dell, I don't have the REPAIR option, which means I have to uninstall 6.0 then reinstall. The process to do that frightens me since it involves going into the registry and I keep seeing "warning warning" about touching those keys. When I saw this website I was ecstatic and hope someone can help me. I use Norton Antivirus, Spybot, AdAware & Zone Alarm so I'm protected and no viruses are infecting my computer. Can I fix this without replacing IE and manually editing the registry? I ran Hijack and the results are below.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

You have a variant of the CoolWebSearch Hijacker.

It happens to the best of us, you know.

Please download CoolWebShredder from the link below and run it. This should clear out quite a bit of the junk.

Then create a new HJT log and post it here and we'll look for stragglers.

hi there.
i have a dell laptop with windows vista on it. i have a history of internet connection problems with it. i brought it with me on a trip to visit my brother and parents (both live in different cities). my computer will wirelessly access the internet at home, but at both my brother's and my parents homes, i got 'can't find the server' error messages when i tried to get online.

now, i checked my internet connections. everything is supposedly working. i even tried resetting my brother's router when i was at his place, and still, the same error message on both firefox and internet explorer. i was able to get online with my ipod touch at both locations, so i know my passwords/wep keys are correct.

i tried disabling my firewall, (at someone's suggestion) and still nothing. i checked to make sure that firefox and internet explorer were not on the 'banned' list (with the help of my brother). they were not banned. i'm not sure what to do.

i even tried doing a system restore, and that didn't help either. i've checked other threads, and they seem to have gone unsolved. i am hoping that i will be lucky and someone may have an answer for me, as i'd like to use my itunes gift card that i got for christmas!

please note that i am somewhat of a (but not a complete) techno-tard, so easy to follow step-by-steps would be appreciated.

ok, I have pretty much the same problem as a bunch of other people in this forum. Once in a while every website I try to go to will not open. It keeps saying cannot find server. I have to restart my computer and then it works again. I'm running windows 98 SE, Internet Explorer 6, I have a T1 connection, and I've ran spyware removers and norton antivirus. It is really just getting annoying. It probably is spyware, but can someone help me. Is there any program that removes all the spyware on your computer, cause some of them only remove some of the spyware.

A:Cannot find sever and DNS server error

There is no universal program that will remove all spyware. It's just impossible to do. Some can't even be removed automatically - requires manual removal.

Let's see what you got there:

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Hallo, need urgent advice!

I haven't been able to access the webpage <http://www.e-isnr.org> I maintain from my own computer for many days now, although everybody else can. FTP file access won't work either. I'm working on a Pentium III laptop running XP Pro.

I've contacted the company which hosts the site and they have suggested different procedures. I tried them all to no avail:

- deleted cookies and temporary internet content - kept getting a 404 error
- tried opening the website with three different browsers: IE, Netscape and Opera
- tried a trace route test, based on which they said "we do not see a problem connecting to our web server from your site."
