Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen EGPU setup

Q: Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen EGPU setup

I have recently purchased a 6th gen x1 carbon. It is the model with a 512gb ssd and 16gb of ram. I am planning a setup for my dorm room that definitely could use some work. There are a lot of peripherals going into this so bear with me. My main question through explaining this is if there is a way to streamline the setup and make it more cost efficient. I am planning to major buys with this setup, the thinkpad ultradock and an Egpu. Regarding the Egpu, it will be a GTX 1070 mounted in a Razor Core V1. My question is I feel like having both the dock and core is unnecessary. I ideally would like to come into my room and put my X1 straight into the dock, which will be closed and probably upright next to the Egpu. Where I see the problem is that I could just as easily do the setup without the dock and instead plug the Egpu into the TB3 port every time I get home, and simply have the peripherals connected to the Egpu housing. One of the pieces that is making me question the setup is I also intend to have an external SSD that will stay in my room with the Egpu and will store my video games to save space on the internal drive for classes and regular programs. I have been told that the SSD and Egpu cannot share the same port as there would not be enough bandwidth to support the two for how I intend to use it, mostly gaming. So here are a couple questions I would like answered. 1. Should I even bother with the Ultra Dock if I am getting the EGPU2. What would be the best way to setup the external SSD3. Is there an alternative to the ultradock so that I do not have to tediously plug in my X1 every time I come home. Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone I want to order a thinkpad x1 laptop that I can sometime use with an eGPU for gaming. I kinda favor the X1 yoga but heard that X1 Yoga is more prone to thermal throttling and heating than X1 carbon. Anyway, if anyone  already tried gaming on X1 yoga (6th gen) with an egpu, would you mind sharing your experience with me (especially in term of thermal throttling and heating). Thanks

A:X1 Carbon or X1 Yoga for gaming with eGPU

To be honest, T480s would be even better, as according to tests, it's able to utilize CPU fully, thanks to good cooling system (make sure to get iGPU-only version though). And thanks to undervolting, you'll be able to elimimate throttling under prolonged load. You'll find more information in article below (both X1's were also tested): https://www.notebookcheck.net/A-performance-comparison-of-all-new-ThinkPad-notebooks.286486.0.html

I have the 6th X1 Carbon. When connected to an eGPU, I think my CPU temps are too high. (85-91 C when playing games for short durations.)
I am thinking about buying a laptop cooler, but I'm not sure what would be better.
My two choices are:
1. the traditional cooling pad. These will have fans running on the bottom of the laptops
OR
2. laptop fan coolers such as Laptop Fan Cooler. These connect to the laptop's side vents, which the Thinkpad models, like my X1 Carbon has.
I wonder if anyone has tried either types of cooling and which one would probably have a better result in cooling down my laptop.
Thanks!

Hello, I'm fairly new to the forums as well as building computers. I currently use a Lenovo Ideapad V570 and would like to play games that require a better graphics card other than the Intel (R) HD Graphics 3000. The game I would like to try and play is a new game called Overwatch, that can be run by these cards. Reading other posts/forums/articles, I know that I need a graphics card, bplus board, and psu. But I don't know what to buy with a $400~500 budget and whether it'll work with my laptop. I would like to have some suggestions about which affordable components to get for the GPU. For the graphics card, I am honestly okay with anything as long as I can play Overwatch on it (it just looks so good to play haha...) Thank you!

I have recently purchased a YOGA 920 and a HP Omen egpu enclosure. I am having problem connecting it to my laptop.

First, I tried both port, there's the sound of connect and disconnect, and nothing shows on the laptop, and the laptop is not charging.

I have tried with power cable connected, and now it was connected. The egpu still was not charging (no power delivery), and it only works one port 2 (port closer to touch pad) with charger connected to port 1. If I switch them, the laptop goes blue scree. I can remove the power after it is connected but then there is no power supply.

It is kind of similar to the issue as MrKnowNothing https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/YOGA-920-Thunderbolt-3-Port-No-devices-fou....

I have tried different drivers but all of them do not work. I have updated BIOS and Type-C firmware from Lenovo to the most recent version.

One more thing. Is it normal that thunderbolt controller is not showing up in device manager when nothing is connected?

I have tried it with my friend?s xps, it works perfectly, basically plug and play.

I think it is not supposed to work like this and the egpu should have power delivery to my laptop. Even if there is no power delivery, it should still connect without power adapter connected. Is this hardware problem or driver problem? Is there anyone else have similar problems?

Thanks!

Hy guys,I'm really desperate and I'm in mood of destroying this fine piece of laptop in Lenovo store just because of stupid whitelist which restricts me of using egpu with this laptop. I own Lenovo G510 ( i3 4000m,8 GB DDR3,Intel HD 4600,SSHD 1000 GB ) and I'm really satisfied with speed, mobility, battery, quality for price etc. I came with idea of adding external GPU with EXP GDC Beast from banggood.com,Dell 220p adapter and Gainward GTX 660. Lets put this simple,I have tried every possible way of enabling from DIY EGPU setup 1.30,removing wifi card and putting to sleep, enabling after BIOS post ( I connect then cable to egpu and ofcourse freeze ),no way. Obviously modding bios is also restricted due to eprom write protection and only way is trough buying programmer kit from ebay. The irony is that Lenovo G500 works very good with EGPU just by looking on techinferno and how many users are using egpu with Lenovo G500. http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/6578-implementations-hub-tb-ec-mpcie.htmlI'm thinking of selling laptop but I dont want to sell because its excellent laptop for me and in that price range I wont get so good design quality,8 gigs of ram, silent and fast HDD ..The EGPU is tested and fully functional,I almost started crying when one forum member from another forum connected to Dell and for Dell it was plug and play. Summary,I tried every possible way of bypassing whitelist throghout Windows sleep, trying after bios post... I'm using Lenovo ThinkPad T580 and would like to connect eGPU Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 550 with GTX970. When I connect Thunderbolt 3 cable to upper USB-C socket I get error "Thunderbolt device functionality might be limited" I was not able to find any useful information about this issue. So I connected Thunderbolt 3 cable to USB-C socket which is used by docking station. It works fine I was able to install nvidia drivers, but it works perfectly only during the time when battery is charging. When battery is fully charged egpu starts to disconnect/connect all the time. The screenshot shows last moments before it goes through endless disconnect/connect cycles. This eGPU works absolutely fine with my other laptop Dell XPS13 (whether it's fully charged or not) I updated BIOS and already tried different Thunderbolt 3 settings in BIOS. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Lenovo Gen 4(20FC) Carbon loses audio after Lenovo System Update We have several of the Gen 4 X1 Carbons here at work and they work fine until Lenovo system updates gets run. If you try to install a different driver, it fails with code 1. No matter if you uninstall, reinstall, different versions of the driver....nothing seems to restore the audio. I finally did a system restore to before lenovo system update was run and the audio returned to working. It seems to be a software problem but I would really like to know if there is some way to get it working without having to restore every time someone runs lenovo system update.

Hello,    I am looking to replace my aging Lenovo T420S and Lenovo x1 Carbon 1st generation. They have both served me well and I am happy with both.  I like the touch of Carbon but don?t use it that often. The machine will be perosnla machine but will be used for personal and business/work use. I saw the T460S and x1 Yoga yesterday at our IT department. I like the built quality of Lenovo T460S including keyboard but found X1 Yoga to be fragile. I couldn?t get my hands on X1 Carbon 4th generation and found out that it doesn?t have touch anymore. The weight difference is minimal between the three machines and I personally like the weight, feel and ruggedness of Lenovo T460S. Bottom line is does anyone have experience with these three machines? I can afford to replace only one machine now and it will be fully loaded (i7, 16GB and 1Tb PCIe-NVME drive). Is x1 Yoga rugged and reliable? The difference between X1 Carbon 4th Gen and T460S seems minimal. Thank You!Subhash

I am a bit confused by all the full disk encryption methods available between hardware options like OPAL and software/hardware options like Bitlocker for a X1 Carbon Generation 6 thinkpad. I am about to install Windows on a new Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB NVMe SSD that I just installed. I have a number of questions and concerns. 1) The way I typically do backups in the past is to pull the SSD and install it in another desktop computer or enclosure and make an image using Macrium Reflect or other disk imaging software. My understanding is that if a HD Password in the bios is set in the bios of the thinkpad this is not possible and the drive will be inaccessible on another machine. Is this correct? 2) Is setting the HD Password the same as setting the ATA password? Can it be cleared? Can it be disabled? 3) Does using Bitlocker (which I haven't used before) allow the drive to be read on another computer if the HD password in the bios is not set? How much of a speed/CPU hit is likely to be encountered with using Bitlocker? 4) Are there recommended settings for Bitlocker? I haven't used it before. Any gotchas? 5) It looks like the Samsung 970 EVO supports the eDrive 1667 standard which I believe should allow Bitlocker to use the drives hardware encryption engine. Is this correct? Does this cause any portability issues? 6) If Bitlocker is not used it looks like there are two options for password protecting the SSD either the HD password in the bios or using s... Read more
