Keyboard key needs to be pressed hard to work

Q: Keyboard key needs to be pressed hard to work

There is a problem with a friend's laptop keyboard. It is said that he had to press on the keyboard key hard for it to register to the computer. Upon removing the key cap, pressing on the gasket and also exhibits the same problem as well. In comparison, a key without the problem require very little force on the gasket for the key to register.

Is the problem with the gasket itself or underneath?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All I have Lenovo G50 80 laptop; it?s a full 15.6 inch laptop with DVD drive, full keyboard, touch pad. Last year i started having problem with laptop, as touchpad stopped working the arrow cursor got stuck on screen, and will only work again if i press any key on keyboard. It will only work for few seconds and minutes then again stuck. Also the arrow or delete key stayed in loop, whenever i open anything to type, the cursor in text field kept moving to left or keep deleting the text. The service center guy told me that it is due to Keyboard and touchpad getting short due to moisture or something, they changed the keyboard. Now after one year again i am facing same problem. Same thing happening again and again. It?s very irritating. It seems there is some hardware or design fault in the way Lenovo has designed their keyboard and touchpad. I live in Mumbai, so may be due to monsoon there is moisture in air and it may be affecting this design. But again i have never seen this issue in any other laptop brands of competitor. Can anyone please help me how can i fix this on my own, as laptop is not under warranty and i don?t want to keep changing laptop every year. May be someone with hardware repair knowledge can help me here. Can I short or cut or sholder any cables, any circuit, I don?t know just help me guys to fix this. Anyone from Lenovo listening please have a look it a big problem. Thanks

My baby nephew smacked a few keys on my T450s. The keyboard now seems to think the Fn key is pressed. All of the keys are unresponsive except for the top row (esc, function keys, etc...) and the space bar only changes the backlighting. The function keys work as typical F1-F12 keys rather than the special functions which are the default. An external keyboard works just fine, which tells me that it must be some sort of hardware issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone!
I'm having trouble with my laptop's keyboard, specifically with letter x.

I press it once and nothing happens.. but if I immediatly press it again, it writes the letter.

What happens?
This works almost like when you open a folder on the pc. You need to click two times quickly to open it.

I tried running the Safe mode and writing and it worked perfectly!

At first I thought it was just dirt or a piece of something that was trapped under the x key but I removed it and nothing..

Please help me.

A:Keyboard writes key once when it was pressed twice

It sounds like there is some program or service running in normal mode that is keying off the 'x' key to see what follows. I've never heard of something like this and have no guesses on what it may be.

Did it work OK at one time? If so, did you install some utility or toolbar around the time the problem started? Can you try a System Restore point just before the problem started?

Hi, my Packard bell laptop has started displaying sequences for some of the keys when pushed e.g. When I push q, 3, t or u the sequence q3tu appears always in that order, it doesn't matter if I push the q first it always appears as this sequence. Some of the other letter are fine however x,r,n,h does the same. I don't know what I've done or how to undo this and am not very good with computers at the best of times. I'm hoping there's a solution as I'm off to uni soon and can't afford a new laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are you sure the keyboard isnt physically damaged and has keys pressed through some kind of liquid spill or hard knock, (hell maybe just wear and tear). Have you tried removing the keyboard from ur laptop, and plugging in an external keyboard?

Hello, so my T440s keyboard is registering two entries instead of one or even the wrong entry for at least these letters and numbers on the left side of the keyboard  S,D,E,2,&3.  The problem is now I can't login to my keyboard as some of the letters are part of my password. I went and bought a cheap keyboard at Target and it does not register when I plug it in. I don't know what to do. I tried backspacing each time I see a double letter but it still says wrong password which makes me wonder if it is registering two different letters/numbers also.

I was playing a game earlier - 'The Division' and my enter key was pressed randomly without my doing so and then shortly after the backspace key was pressed and I know this because the chat window opened in game (pressing enter does so) and pressing backspace makes your character walk.

I've scanned my computer with Avast boot time scan, Super Anti-spyware and Malware Bytes and I am all clean. I am quite confident it is not an infection or key logger.

It hasn't happened since, so it is probably nothing, but just wondering what the cause of this would be if i am not infected? I assume it's a hardware glitch - perhaps MOBO or keyboard related?

Not sure it's normal behaviour or problem related to software.---------------------------It happens like this: When I hold UP + LEFT arrow, Spacebar locks up unless I release either UP or LEFT key. But that didn't happen when I hold UP + RIGHT. Also, when holding UP + DOWN, these keys went locked: Q,W,E,R,U,I,O,P If I holds down W + S, these keys locks up (includes 8 keys from UP + DOWN): A,S,D,F,J,K,L,; For S + X, it locks everything in that row except B,N. Which means if you try to hold two keys from different rows, it locks everything in that row except two centered keys. Unaffected keys: 5,6,T,Y,G,H,B,N. (Tested on alphabets & numbers. Numpad keys excluded.) Any software fix or tweaks can unlocks these keys? Since it's obstrcuting me quite a lot when gaming.

Since my microsoft account password was having one of these characters, I had to reset the password before setup itself. But after the restart, it started working. The @ key problem surfaced once again, but immediately restarted and it started working. But now I'm having problems with ` and " characters. As Im typing this, on the first press both characters didnt appear, but on second press I got 2 of them, i went back and removed one of them. Is this a hardware or driver issue? Kindly refer me to the latest keyboard drivers

Hello, I have a problem where i can not click after a key has been pressed on the keyboard. I am using a laptop that has it's own keyboard and touchpad but i am using an external usb keyboard and mouse. It did use to work but i had to reboot my computer and now i can not get it to work.

The delay happens on almost all keys apart from the arrow keys, making it hard to play games as i can not move and shoot. The touchpad drivers are synaptics it comes up as Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad in the device manager. I would also like to mention that before i rebooted it there was an option to turn of the delay in settings> devices> mouse and touchpad. But after i rebooted the two have became separate and no longer shows the option.

The things i have tried to fix it

Turn of the palm check & Smartsense (Depends on the driver version)
Update the drivers via device manager and downloaded them from the Synaptics website
Rebooted again
Disabled the touchpad
Uninstall and Reinstall touchpad drivers

Hi everyone.  Got my brand new 5th Gen X1 Carbon a week ago.  Was working fine, until an extremely annoying issue popped up with the keyboard this morning.  The letter "k" keeps appearing at random when I use the laptop's keyboard. I can hardly type, as random "k"s keep appearing.  It's driving me crazy. The k's appear when I do not press any key on the laptop, but the issue is worst when I'm typing away using other keys. If I apply the lightest pressure on the k key, I can activate it.        This issue is resolved if I keep the laptop's lid closed, using an external keyboard and monitor.    I would greatly appreciate any help resolving issue.  I have already tried unistalling the keyboard from Device Manager and restarting.

About a month ago I've been having a very weird think happen.  I've had no spills on my keyboard, but only the numbers key will repeat whenever I press them.  For instance, if I press "1", it will sometimes type only one number, but sometimes nothing, and other times three or four number 1s.  The same thing happens through 1-0.  More, whenever I want to shift+ a number, I have to end up pressing the number keys like 10 times in order to have the symbol come up.  I've never encountered this on any other keyboard before.  Again, no spills, no malware, I've deleted the driver and reinstalled, etc.  No luck.  Any advice?  Might I just need a new keyboard?

Hi thereI'm having a problem which is strangely affecting both my laptop and my PC. Both run on XP Pro SP3.The desktop Icons & Programs open as properties unless I right click, then click open, plus the keyboard acts as if the alt key is pressed and either some keys don't work, or just type alternatives, such as accents etc.The PC was unable to carry out a system restore, as the "next" buttons couldn't be operated. However, after a couple of restarts, it did then appear to be normal and I carried out a restore going back to the 1st April which is as far as I can go back. Unfortunately, this didn't work. It did however make a difference to the laptop. it is now usable, but if I leave it running unused, it reverts back to its old tricks.I saw that someone else on here had a similar problem and have followed the procedure as directed on this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic413307.html/page__st__15Obviously I can't post them on here from the PC, but I can copy them to an external drive hopefully and then post them from the laptop. I received my XPS 9560 last week, and it's a nice machine, however I'm having issues getting keys to register as being pressed.
At first, I thought that I was just getting used to the keyboard and missing some of the keys whilst typing - they work most of the time, however I've started noticing some patterns and narrowed down the cause.
Essentially, the problem occurs if I do not hit the keys exactly in the centre of key. Pressing either the edge or, more commonly, the corner will depress the key a significant amount, but apparently not enough to register as a key press. It is lost obvious when pressing either the right hand edge, or bottom right hard corner of a key.
I've put a short video together demonstrating the issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQkfZvAsiAU
(Please ignore the meowing noises in the background. Tux is a very vocal cat.)
I'm certain it's not a software issue as this has been happening across multiple Linux installs and whilst using Windows.
Is this normal behaviour and something others are able to replicate? It's killing the typing experience for me on what is otherwise a very nice to use keyboard, and may be enough for me to return the 9560.

I have a thinkpad t420 I received from a family member and the whole keyboard and hotkeys work perfectly I just have a couple of issues that are both persistent and intermittent with this laptop. I'm pretty tech savvy and experienced with computers hardware and software. The main issue that I'm having is one that was kind of difficult to even figure out what exactly the cause of it was but basically my fn key and my media back key(left arrow) or my media next key(right arrow) is being pressed together constantly and rapidly. Under normal conditions this isn't even noticeable after booting the computer until you go to minimize a window and try to restore it. Clicking on minimized windows while this occurs causes them to not restore. They just stay minimized and the only way to restore the window is by alt tabbing back to that window. When I start media players with audio or video files regardless pretty much of which (windows media player, media player classic, vlc) the media instantly skips any currently playing video or audio files, cycling completely through the playlist repeatedly if loop is on without actually stopping to play any of the media files. The third strange effect that this has is that when my mouse hovers over any window on the bottom of the screen the tooltips for said windows flash when my mouse moves over them but when I stop the mouse over them the tooltips stop displaying until I begin moving the mouse again. But they're flashing so quickly as I move... Read more

Hi,

I have this problem for one week. I have the following error message when I start up my PC, a 6-year old HP pavilion desktop:

Reboot and select proper device or insert boot media in selected boot drive and press a key

Pressing any key gives me the same message. The night before the problem started, it was OK however, I noticed that the shutdown process was much slower than usual.

I had done the following to try to resolve the problem but without success:

I had gone into the cmos setup / Boot Device priority and tried to set to boot from hard drive first but it indicates HDD Group Boot Priority as not installed.

In cmos setup, I pressed F5 key to Load Setup defaults, then F10 to save and exit cmos setup.
I took out the coin size battery from the motherboard, waited for 15 minutes and placed it back then went into cmos again, press F5 again to Load Setup defaults. Repeated the process twice, this time waited for half an hour before putting the battery back still cannot boot.

I took out the graphics card and put it back; unplugged the power cable from the hard drive and inserted it back; used another spare power connector to connect to the hard drive.
I pulled out (disconnect) the hard drive data cable (red color) from both the hard drive and motherboard and re-connect it back still cannot boot.

And I realized something is very strange now, every time I switched on the power on the wall plug, the PC start to power up immediately and the power ... Read more

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hi,
I have noticed this issue only with built-in Dell's keyboards (working fine at different laptops or with external keyboard) - Precision 4400 and Inspiron 7566.
While playing a racing game when I hold a key to accelerate (whatever it is, tried many) and when I press second one to turn, once for a while - sometimes 1 minute after start, sometimes 5 - it's getting interrupted for around a half of a second (so I drive straight for this short period of time).
I have tried to disable as many services as I can, turned off anything I could and I'm still getting it, installed all drivers I have found

Hi, I have a Lenovo Flex 2 14 which came with a British keyboard but I noticed you can take off the keyboard and swap it out for another one - you can find backlit versions, or a version with a different layout. I got a keyboard for it with Japanese hiragana on it, but the laptop doesn't seem to recognise any of the extra keys this keyboard comes with which have key codes not used by other languages. These keys include: | -? \ ??????the ????, ???? and ???? toggleI would have assumed this was to do with the fact that these are keys from a 106/109 key layout as opposed to the standard 102 key, so I replaced the keyboard driver with Microsoft's 106/109 key keyboard driver, but that hasn't had any effect - it still can't see these keys being pressed. The ??/?? ?? key works because it uses the same key code as the tilde on other keyboards, but that's all. My hypothesis for why this might not be possible to fix is that the ribbon connection between the keyboard and the motherboard could only support 102-key layouts in Europe, and therefore the only way to be able to use these extra input conversion keys without a different motherboard altogether would be to use an external USB keyboard. I may have just made up what I said about the motherboard though, so does anyone know if there's a driver I can use to solve this problem and be able to use the extra keys? I can't just use a key mapper like KeyTweak ... Hey,

I am pretty desperate now as I recently got a new Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop, which i think its 9 months old only.

All of the sudden, one day the shift key started to automatically been pressed down.. as if its like its being 'possessed' in simple terms.. and it happened at random times

After much forums, some say hold shift key down for 10 secs or x amount of secs, disable sticky keys, filter keys, bounce keys, or even continue press shift keys continuously etc etc..

Did all those, disabled sticky keys, bounch keys, filter keys and now whenever i on my comp, the shift key will automatically be pressed down, so i have to hold the shift key for like 5-8secs to disable it, than it works fine and no more occurence.

However, a new problem occurs.. now certain keys on the laptop is not working like the right shift key.. when the right shift key is pressed down, none of the letters are being capital or none of the symbols are showing BUT the left shift key does the job..

Than, the left shift key could not caps the letter z, t, y, m, and a few more.. but it works prefectly fine with other keys.. Now i am pretty sure its not a keyboard malfunction because without pressing caps, all the keys are fine but only these certain keys wont be caps when the left shift key is pressed..

So i decided to use an external keyboard and everything works out fine.. right shift key is working, left shift key caps those letters which could not be cap... Read more

A:laptop keyboard does not work but works fine with usb keyboard

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

I have a Dell 2400 Series desktop computer.  The number block on the right side of keyboard does not work.  I thought it might be the keyboard, so I ordered a new keyboard from Dell.  New keyboard arrived;, installed --- no success.  Same problem. Why doesn't the number block work.  However, the top row of numbers does work.

Keyboard and USB dont work in windows but work in BIOS, i have also tried a ps/2 keybaord also not working in windows, i have tried safe mode, disabling driver sig enforcement, using different mice/keyboards, restored bios to default settings, ran sfc /scannow no errors detected, and still no luck any input would be amazing. I wanted to do a upgrade repair install of windows but you can only do that inside windows , basically trying everything before i have to wipe the HD and reinstall windows, i ran memcheck as well and no errors also as a sidenote it says my gpu is not found, when i have my monitor plugged into it, i am still receiving internet from ethernet.

I have windows ultimate x64
2.66 gHz processor 8gb of ram
1 TB harddrive 760 GTX GFX card

All devices work on other computers.

What were you doing on your computer when all this happened.
It's very unusual that not even a ps2 keyboard doesn't work.

Does you system boot at all into Windows 7 Normal mode of Safe Mode?
Your post is not clear to me.

If you can't boot Window 7 here is a tutorial with lot of test to do.

Windows 10
Start - Settings - Ease of Access - Keyboard

Everything here is off. If i turn on the On-Screen Keyboard no keys are Highlighted (indicating they are depressed/stuck )
When I use the hard keyboard and sometimes even the onscreen keyboard its as if either Ctrl, Alt Win or something are pressed down as it just types shortcuts.
EG:

-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via onscreen keyboard types as normal
-H- typed into chrome browser address bar via hard keyboard brings up -Chrome://history- But now also on the onscreen keyboard Ctrl is Highlighted.
I click on the onscreen keyboard to deactivate the now highlighted Ctrl button and try again. Now things are different, as now both the onscreen keyboard and the hard keyboard both bring up ?Chrome://history- when -H- is typed ( Shift is not depressed )

This seems to randomly cycle one min onscreen keyboard works fine, next the keyboard works fine or they either work or none of the work rendering the computer useless.

I cant help feel it?s a software issue but im no pro and I don?t have an additional external keyboard to try but as the onscreen and hard keyboard work ok for a while sometimes I assume something is up and that?s what brought me here.

Hopefully this is clear enough to be understood and to help others who may have the same issue.

Thank you so much for your time.

For the past two days I have not been able to use my keyboard on my U510 unless I plug in a USB Keyboard & also pushing & holding down ctrl+alt+del to type all of the characters I want. If this is not done only the Caps Lock, the Spacebar, Enter & the letter I works. Once I go through the USB keyboard setup I can take out the keyboard & use the keyboard on my laptop but my volume turns down on it's own. Does anyone know if there is a BIOS update I can put on a Flash Drive? The laptop came with Windows 8 but I went down to 7 then went up to Windows 10. If I were to try to go to the BIOS I get no response because of the keyboard not responding. Can someone please help me with this problem.
