Windows Vista can't open anything... I only can open stuff in Safe Mode

Q: Windows Vista can't open anything... I only can open stuff in Safe Mode

I'm not exactly sure with what I downloaded, but all that i think i have downloaded in the past week are PDF docs and videos from hdvideo (when the problem started to happen). From there, I could only surf on Safe Mode with networking, whereas when I start windows vista normally, things do not open when I attempt to do so. Moreover, it takes forever when i press Ctrl Alt Dlt, but there it says the system "failed to start security options" and from there it's an eerie black screen with the start logo on the bottom left that cannot be clicked. The only method I could get the computer to restart was to manually switch it off and on.
I recently used Malwarebytes but it did not detect anything.

Additional details about my laptop:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz)
Windows vista home premium
Memory 2GB
Hard Disk drive 250gb

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated, I really need printing back <3

Preferred Solution: Windows Vista can't open anything... I only can open stuff in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Vista Smart Community,
I have a problem with a stupid malware virus on my Window Vista laptop (x32). This is the typical malware virus (system tools) that pops multiple windows telling me that my PC is infected with viruses and then is asking me to pay them (ransom scam). In the past I was able to fix the issue by going to safe mode and then fixing the proxy on my IE and then downloading legitimates virus killer. This time, is a little harder for me to kill this virus. This time the virus is not allowing me to open IE at all in safe mode and is using ?Window Vista security center? as the name versus the other know names. Can someone please help me figure out how to kill this Malware when I cannot access IE?

Hey guys:

I picked up a bunch of viruses. I noticed when my computer started slowin g down. They seem to have disabled my realtime McAfee antivirus and firewall. I was able to run it manually and it found and quarantined 3 trojans. I

I then ran the TrendMicro housecalls online scan and it found and deleted another 11 or 12 trojans and worms. I deleted them.(I did not run this with my System Restore turned off.)

My computer still won't boot-normally. I gets to the screen where it shows Windows XP and the dotted line blinking from left to right. The screen goes black and then just stays black. I have to then do a hard reset and when it asks if I want to start in Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Networking etc... the only choice that lets me in is The Last Known Good Configuration. All the others get the quick blue screen of death and then it restarts.

I tried a system restore and went back about a week. That failed too.

Windows Task Manager Show I am using 67% to 100% cpu usage depening on whatever small tasks I have opened on the desktop(like Mozzilla Firefox.)

I a running Windows XP. It's an Asus P4C800E mobo, 3.4 Extreme cpu, 2 gig of memory, and about a terabyte of hd space. Let me know if you need any more info.

Thanks for your help,

I just turned off my Sys Restore and I am re-running the online scan.

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation DVD, or it's not up to the Service Pack level currently installed, you can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

I recommend using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest available) to create the DVD from the downloaded .iso file. Just be careful during the install not to accidentally install some of the bundled junk that comes with it. Always take The Custom Install option.

You can do this on any computer capable of burning a DVD.

The one on the COA sticker on your computer will work.

You can also create a bootable USB Flash drive (4GB or larger) to install Windows 7 from.Download and run Universal USB Installer Easy as 1 2 3
Select Windows 7 from the first drop down list, all the way to the bottom
Select the downloaded Windows 7 iso file
Select your USB flash drive
Click Create
For techies or folks who work on computers:

Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility.

This will fit on a 6GB flash drive or can be burned to a DVD.

Once you have that, run chkdsk and System File Checker (SFC) from the Recovery ConsoleBoot your Windows 7 installation DVD or Flash drive
When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", pre... Read more

Hello guys, first time poster on here, anyway I have a huge problem with my Vista OS I hope you can solve, so far no one has been able to help me...

Anyway, when I surf the internet I use pop ups/tabs depending on what sites I view, everything works fine for awhile, however after awhile my computer starts to act funny....

What happens is after awhile no new tabs will open, or no popups, and then to make matters worse then after awhile my right click button and scroll click button won't respond to anything, and then I can't open up any new programs, images, videos, folders, etc. And sometimes my start menu won't display my shutdown button, or the program, documents, settings, search, help and support, or run buttons/icons.

I really can't figure out how to fix this and never seen anything like it before. So I'm hoping you guys can help with the situation, thanks in advance.

EDIT: If you need certain information let me know what you need.

I need help. My laptop won't open windows, not even in safe mode. It is a Compaq v2000 with windows XP home version & SP2. Here is what happened. I have MSN dialup service, but I went to the local library & downloaded McAfee free antivirus for MSN at my local library via wireless high speed there. Then I started having blue screen issues. I used the automatic reporting system to report the problem. Microsoft sent me back an automatic response with recommendations to fix the problem. One of the things they recommended was to go to My Computer, right click the drive and then properties, click on tools and then scan the disk. That sounded innocent enough, so that is what I did for the files. Well then I got a message:insufficient disk space to correct errors in index $SII of file 9. Now I thought I had about a third of my hard drive free, but maybe it got filled with the dump files from the blue screen errors? Anyway, after that message when I try to start my computer I get the initial screen, and then a screen with choices to start in safe mode. But no matter which choice I try, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with command prompt, the last configuration that worked, normal, they all have the same result. There is a page that quickly fills with lines of I guess steps the computer tries, it is too fast for me to read, and then I get another blue screen, again too fast for me to record what it says. Then the computer shuts down, starts again and repeats the process and continues... Read more

I'm tearing my hair out with this one. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason that I can see, Windows 7 won't load at all. Everything was working fine until today.

When Windows looks like it is starting, the "Windows is loading files..." message comes up. It then goes into Startup Repair, which either can't detect problem or "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically". I have tried pressing F8 for the safe mode menu, but none of the options there work either as selecting any of them just ends up in Startup Repair again. Sadly I have no system restore point or system image to reload. I have run the Windows Memory Diagnostic, which found no problems. I know that reloading Windows is almost certain to fix this problem, but I have a handful of files that I really, really don't want to lose by doing this. Is there any way that I can save my files??

Any advice would be much appreciated.

A:Windows won't open; safe mode won't work

I would think that a check of the hard drive itself would be in order...as for saving files, you can remove the hard drive and attach it to a different system as a secondary drive...and then move data files (not programs) to another partition/drive or removeable media.

Please help! A couple of weeks ago many functions of my computer ceased to work all of a sudden. It was just after I'd used Photoshop for the first time in ages as I don't usually work from home any more. The program had been producing errors when loading ever since I installed an updated version of Cry Engine, which installed a plugin for PS, so might have been something to do with PS if that helps?

Here is a list of the issues, all began simultaneously:

Computer will not shut down properly - just hangs on the logging off screen.
Safemode is just a black background. The only thing that appears is a wacom virtual keyboard interface.
Can't access control panel functions like system restore (asks for permission as normal but doesn't appear. When attempting to relaunch it says it is already running), networking, and can't add/remove programs.
Windows cannot install updates. It either freezes or tells me that another update is currently being installed.
Internet is intermittent but always appears offline in the tray at the bottom right. Clicking on or hovering over the network symbol does not bring up a menu.
Task manager does not open but the green square appears on the tray at the bottom right to say it's running.
Photoshop does not run. Also itunes, windows picture viewer and maybe more that I haven't tested yet. However, autodesk programs seem unaffected.
Sometimes startup fails in normal mode as well - following logging on there is j... Read more

Hi I'm having some serious problems since last night. All of a sudden my computer restarted on its own and when it restarted none of my programs loaded up in the taskbar and only certain programs will open like IE 64. I tried doing "sfc /scannow" about 5 times with no results and most of the other threads I've followed turn out to be dead ends involving the subject. Not sure if its a virus or what. The one thing that did happen though.. was I was tinkering around with settings and restarted it in normal mode yesterday and everything loaded up(after it had been giving me the problems with nothing opening) So I ran AVG, Malware Bytes, and AD-Aware while I had the chance but when I restarted nothing is working again. Also I tried downloading .exe and .ink registries and merging them as I read in other threads but this didnt work either. Any ideas? And keep in mind I cant run any programs except IE 64, I can't open up any type of compressed file because winzip/winrar wont open. I did however download a few registry's and they opened fine but they were straight up registry files unpacked. I tried to do a system restore and all my restore points were deleted aside from ones that were created after I had restarted my computer to find it not functioning properly so thats useless. And I have no access to my OS disc to do a repair. Please help.. normally I can find fix's when I have computer issues but I'm clueless here. Thank you.

A:Windows 7 Programs wont open even in safe mode.

Also.. Flash/Javascript things like that arent functioning either. If I try to goto a website that requires activex, flash, or adobe it'll ask to install but when I click install it does nothing.

Running Internet explorer 7 , Firefox 3.5.18 and Vista Home Basic. Compaq Desktop computer.
Problem started this morning, couldn't turn on the PC. No power. Checked cords and plugs ,monitor would turn on ,printer worked so it's nothing to do with powerboards, sockets, electricity. Waited 10 mins and tried again. The pc powered up to the windows log in screen. I left it and came back 20 mins later and the light behind the power on/off button had gone from green to amber and the screen was blank. My initial thought was the PSU. I rebooted and got it working however Internet explorer wouldn't open but firefox would. I ran avg but could not open the home page to see the results of the scan. I closed firefox and tried to reboot but got an error message saying firefox was still running. I started the task manager only it wouldn't display, I could see the green icon only in the bottom toolbar. I couldn't see the taskmanager even though it was running. I powered down by holding in the on/off button for 10 seconds. Rebooted into safemode. I can run both browsers in safe mode. I downloaded spybot ,got updates and ran it and fixed the problems it found. I installed avira and ran it. It found 1 problem,
EXP/ms04-028.jpeg.A which was removed.
I was unable to get into windows update to get the online scan in either normal or safe mode. I'm not sure if the problem is a virus or not since after removing ms04-028 I still have the problem.

Sony VAIO VPC series laptop w/ Core i7 Q740 w/4GB RAM working on for a client. Malwarebytes pulled up 26 infections, and I thought that was the solution to constant lag problems and lag when typing. Turned Norton features off, CHKDSK, adjusted desktop setting for Best Performance, ran in Safe Mode, no change. Even when typing in the password there is sometimes a lag. I've read numerous posts on this subject on this forum and throughout the web. Client has another laptop of this same exact model and it screams. CPU usage is very low when lag happens - 0 to 2%. Used Process Explorer and Svchost Viewer to investigate and rogue programs - everything looks legit. (I can post screenshots). I thought a svchost.exe file was running some higher than normal usage, but it was just handing more services, and even after I killed the process tree - still got lag. It is intermittent, but only with a few seconds at a time of performance.
Another tech buddy said there might be an issue with the hard drive as far as SATA issues, etc., or BIOS settings, and that some of the Sandy Bridge i7's had a SATA issue of some sort. I've tried most everything the average user might mention - I've put a few hours into this - I solve most issues without posting for help, but this is bugging me - there has to be a solution to this that doesn't involve a clean install - especially since the post at When Typing There Is a Delay shows that a clean install doesn't always solve these types of problem... So I just started getting redirects on any link i would open. Followed by the blue screen that showed a bunch of errors that most were out of the screen to see. After that the computer would get to the screen showing the user accounts but upon clicking they would just freeze. The only way to get past that screen is to be in safe mode. I followed the beginning steps and downloaded the malware removal software that found about 21 infected files and then fixed them. Did another sweep which found none. Still will not work. I had to paste the logs because the computer will not let me resave any files in safe mode right now.

Last night, out of nowhere, I noticed that every 15 seconds or so the computer would seem to freeze and then unfreeze after about 5 seconds or so. The computer has never done this before. I decided to restart, and this is when things started getting bad. After restarting, the computer seemed to boot up fine, but when I clicked on firefox, it seemed to lock up completely. The taskbar didn't seem to be affected, so I clicked start. The frame of the start window opened, but everything inside was white, and that too appeared frozen. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and nothing happened, the computer stayed locked.

I turned the computer off manually and tried restarting in safe mode. The computer started to boot until it reached a specific process (I don't remember which). It was stuck on that process for about 15 minutes, and then it just turned itself off.

I turned the computer back on again and let it boot fully while I took a shower, so it had about 30 minutes to fully boot. I come back and everything seems to be working, icons are highlighting as I hovered over them, the start menu worked, right-click menu's appeared, etc. I opened up a folder with some movies on my desktop. It loaded fine. I click a movie, and it begins playing, but then all of the sudden the whole thing freezes, and I can't open anything in the background. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and this time it actually worked. I chose task manager, and although it took 5 minutes to actually appear, I was happy to ... Read more

I own a Windows 7 PC. I am having trouble turning on my computer. Each time I try to access my user account or that of others I either end up with a black screen with only the mouse pointer visible or it opens to the user desktop but I really can not do much else; the only programs I can open are things like My Computer and the Control Panel, but when I try to access anything within these, the pointer has the little blue circle that says it's working, but nothing happens even after 20 mins or so; and I have to end up restarting via the button on the front of the computer. It does not recognize my home network so I can not get any Internet. I tried retiring the computer back about three days but each time it fails and says something about my anti-virus software interfering, I turned off that software and it still gives me the same message.
I can open the computer in Safe Mode with networking, and I can access my home network as it should and access the Internet. I can also access the basic programs as I should and have tried system recover but it gives me the same message as in normal mode.
I have an external hard drive that I tried booting from but I don't even know if it worked, because I have the same problems. The external hard drive has a back-up/restore function but it says I can not do that from safe mode, and when I clicked restore options after I opened the file on the hard drive while in normal mode it just froze again.
I really have know idea what is going on.... Read more

A:Trouble loading in normal mode have to open in safe mode

Hi, it sounds as if something suspect is running on your computer or as if too many applications are trying to open when you boot the machine. Do you remember installing or using anything new prior to the issue occurring?

The easiest way to fix this would be to strip down the startup programs and see if that helps the issue. There is however some risk associated with doing this, you have to be confident that you can turn off a start up program without it diminishing your computer's functionality. If you're interested in trying this then there's instructions on how to disable start up programs here. And if you're unsure of whether or not to disable a program googling it's "startup name" will give you an idea of what it does, essentially what you're trying to do is stop un-necessary programs from running when the computer starts. So things like updaters, monitering programs, a lot of things that show up in the system tray can be disabled. If you're still unsure then post a list of the start up items and we can give you an idea of what's going on. You may have to do this from safe mode (ensure you're logged in as an administrator) however once you restart you should notice an immediate difference. If you don't then the problem could be with OS damage or something a little more difficult to fix, if that's the case i'd advise that you possibly post in the virus/spyware/trojan help forum and the people there can give a little more in depth analysis of what's going on.... A:How to open the computer in normal mode and not safe mode

Hold the "Windows" key and the "R" key. Type msconfig in the window that opens:

Go to the "boot" tab and uncheck "safe boot":

Click "Apply" and "OK" and restart the PC. It should then boot in normal mode.

Had P4 1.9 Socket 478, Albatron MB w/ old ATI All in Wonder, Old SB Audigy.

MB & mem went out so upgraded to:
ABIT AN8 SLI, Socket 939
AMD 64 3200+
Leadtek Winfast PX6200 TC TDH PCI Express 64MB on board
MB has "Audiomax 7.1 daughter card that plugs into a PCIe1. So not using the AIW video or the Audigy sound card. Have 2 HD's, DVD ROM, DVD R/RW & 3.5 floppy. Same drives alway had.
XP Home - same as before

Each time I boot up, it gets to the XP logo then goes back to initial boot screens then shows Win did not shut down normally asking if I want to open safe. If I open Win normally, it goes back to the same and will only let me open in safe mode.

I cleared CMOS. Same result. Tried running Win update, but it would not display. Maybe because in safe mode?

I checked the sys info, & there are no warnings/cautions, etc. The post code LED shows FF. Defined in manual as "Boot attempt (INT 19h)" Have only had beeping post codes w/ old MB, so do not know if this is normal, is because in Safe mode or never completed the boot process. But, am posting this inquiry using this PC so I do not think it is an error.

Thanks for any help.

A:New MB & AMD CPU-Only can open in SAFE mode

You didn't expect Windows to just boot up on different motherboard did you?

The hardware changes are too drastic in your case. What you need to do is a Windows XP Repair Installation: http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/rep... XP by Installing Over top of Existing Setup:

Of course the best way to do this would be to have a clean install of Windows XP to avoid any driver issues and to remove any software problems that have accumulated over time.

Hi djm1971,Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I'm afraid I've got bad news.Your system is infected with one of the nastiest file infectors:Virut is a polymorphic file infector with some additional features. It spreads all around the drive and infects even files infected by another virus previously. The only symptoms are a strange HDD activity while infecting, and also unwanted TCP traffic. Virut tries to connect you into an IRC network under the user name "Virtu" and zombify you. Unfortunately, the cleaning of this virus is very difficult or almost impossible.http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virus...s.aspx?id=55141The virus remains resident in memory and infects executable files with ".EXE" and ".SCR" file extensions. It's damage to the system is almost beyond repair as it disables Windows File Protection:The virus disables Windows File Protection by injecting code into the "winlogon.exe" process that patches system code in memory.http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virus...s.aspx?id=55141Therefore all those running processes are most probably now the virus agent. There is a claim by Grisoft that the following tool can remove the infection:http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Win...t-Remover.shtmlThis claim is hard to believe. Not only almost all the running processes are infected but also their copy in i386 folder and in the dll cache are patched. Therefore the only fast and safe answer to the vir... Read more

So, about a week ago the sound stopped working on my laptop. A customer service guy from Dell wlaked me through installing a new sound card. It fixed my sound! I was so happy. Oh, but the excitement was short lived. About a half hour after installing the sound card, my computer randomly shut down. When i turned it back on, i could not open it correctly. Upon typing in my password , I encountered a BSOD. The happened many times.

I tried the whole 'last known good configuration' but it did not help.
For awhile I was able to boot it to safe mode but now it will not due that. I encounter a BSOD attempting to open anything. This is why I am unable to attached the files that I am supposed to in a BSOD thread.
research online has me convinced that it was some type of faulty sound card I installed.

any advice on what to do from here?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that has Windows 7, which was installed when I got the computer.
annnny advice would be so appreciated!!!!!
thank you!!

I have now also tried to use an external USB device called Astone ISO Gear 250, which I put my HDD into. Even some .docx and pdf show their correct sizes in kb, but willl not open.
If anybody can help me get into a restore point or safe mode I know I can do the rest. Oh, also over the week-end, got annoyed and was going to do complete system install. Now I've gone and done it. In my obsession to remove Windows Live Messenger from my system, I screwed the whole pooch up. I have this problem for 5 days ago from now. I'm running on Vista home 32bits. I can't open programs when I boot in normal mode. They appear in the task manager, but they don't show up. I've tried Steam, WoW, Firefox, IE etc... The only program that works perfectly, and this is weird, is Skype. This one works. I've tried planty solutions that Ive found around the internet,I don't remember them all, but none worked. I've tried the registry thing. I've tried the .exe fix, it did'nt work.

Everything works in Safe mode(Firefox, Steam, etc) I first thought it was my anti-virus (Live Onecare) but no, it wasn't(I uninstalled it). I've disable startup programs with msconfig, no chance this way neither...Even a backup restore failed.

I'm sorry for my bad english, i'm trying to be clear as much as possible. Leave me feedback for more details! I really need help

Thanks and this is much appreciated.

I am running a PC with Windows XP .

Recently started getting blue screen with message that my computer is infected and I should go to their site and purchase their software.
I am also getting a bubble from an icon in my tray that pops up every few minutes with one of several messages: your computer is under attack, Your computer is running slow, etc. All of which end up at the web site selling repair software. I also have a floating box in the upper left of the screen that says I am running low on memory and a few other things. When it appears every few minutes it means that the icon bubble will be comming up.

I have and run AVS, Spy Bot and Ad Aware. SpyBot found several problems and fixed them all except this one. AVS did not find this one. I downloaded SmitFraudFix but could not get it to show up on the screen in Safe Mode. I then ran it in regular mode and it killed the blue screen but the floating box and the icon remain as constant nags.

I have tried several times to get the SmitfraudFix program to run in Safe Mode but have had no luck so far.

If anyone has any suggestions I will appreciate them. Dave

This is my friend's laptop that was running slow and having a lot of issues. He gave it to me to fix up, but I believe there is a much bigger issue. Here's what I've done so far:
Installed and ran TuneUp Utilities 2012. Defragged and fix issues with the registry and hard disk (via TuneUp's Disk Check). All bad sectors removed. This sped up the computer considerably and fixed the boot failure issue.
Installed and ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Removed 72 bad files, but 5 remain that cannot be removed. They are 5 instances of PUP.DownloadnSave (1 file, 4 registry key).
The Problem: After booting the computer normally, when I try to open My Computer, Control Panel, and any system folder, I get an error message. "explorer.exe  Windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I also had to create a new user name and migrate all of the files from the old user name to the new one because the old name would give an error when I tried to log in.

I have a virus on my laptop, i was in the process of sorting this out, however i clicked on run - Msconfig - Boot - safe boot and selected minimal. I re-started and the computer loaded automatically in safe mode, however it got to the blue screen and the computer shut down automatically.

I take it i need to de-select this option, but i can't even get beyond this blue screen which keeps shutting the computer down. There is an option on my windows 7 Operating system to use CMD as part of the recovery process, however i've tried to open MSCONFIG in there but to no avail. I dont have any system restore points set up either, so all i have is the Regedit option as i can get into Regedit.

My two questions are quite simply: Can i open MSCONFIG in cmd? and Why is safe mode not loading and shutting the computer down? Is this virus related?

I guess a third question would also be, what can i do besides reverting back to default factory settings?

Kind regards, your help is much obliged

A:Not being able to open MSCONFIG in CMD or safe mode!

What happens if you keep F8 pressed immediately after starting? Do you get the screen with starting options.

If yes then try and start in the Safe Mode with Command Prompt. You might be able to open msconfig in this environment. I have been able to reach msconfig in this way often.

Not sure what's going on but unless I'm in safe mode I can't open any programs. All the usual programs I have that start when I boot up just didn't open including AVG. I try to open firefox, IE, WoW, WMP, but nothing happens. I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit edition.

The SFC may be of some use too. Click Start/ All Programs/ Accessories
Right click on the Command Prompt option, on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option
If you haven?t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn?t!) you will be asked for authorization. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.

Start the System File Checker

In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow, press Enter
You?ll see ?the system scan will begin?.

The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files. You will be asked to insert your Vista DVD if it?s needed.

Close the Command Prompt Window when the job is finished.

I have a nation of viruses and spywares inside my computer. I can quarantine and delete the infected files . In fact, I have six or seven of programs that can quarantine and delete the infected files . Two or three seconds later, I can watch the infected files reappear, then I try again with another program . I cannot find a way to make them stay dead. I turned system restore off, too. Some people told me to try deleting them in safe mode and see if they come back then. I would like to try that, except when I try to go into safe mode now, it tells me it can't because I'm missing something called hal.dll. Here's what I got when I scanned with HijackThis, please help me exorcise the evil spirits.

I have a Gateway PC that was working until I uninstalled the printer driver and all other files associated with it. When I restarted the computer after everything was removed, I could not open Windows XP. When I shut it off and turn it back on, the Gateway logo appears immediately and then the status bar, but it does not follow thru on the loading of Windows. I have tried many, many times to restart so that I can get into SafeMode, but I have not been successful. I have tried taping all of the F buttons, but still can't get past the status bar. I don't know what I did or what happened, all I know is that if I can't open in safe mode, I don't know what else to do. I have even tried using the Windows CD, but that also didn't work. I get the message to press any key and then it goes back to the Gateway logo and the status bar. Can anyone help me??

Avast Antivirus

Since this morning after starting up, when we click on an icon (Google Chrome, our regular browser, and then Internet Explorer when that didn't work) the hourglass shows up for a little while (less than a minute) and then disappears as though nothing had been clicked. Nothing opens... CTRL-ALT-DEL shows no tasks. I don't know enough about processes to give you useful info from there.

We tried (after a simple restart and the same thing happening) in Safe Mode: CCleaner, ScanDisk (had to reboot), Avast, MBAM, Auslogics Defrag. No bad files/viruses/malware showing up. I'm now using Safe Mode with Networking to post this.

I've followed the preparation instructions, here are the DDS logs. GMER would not work although I tried a few times (either I got a blue screen and computer died, or the one time that didn't happen and the scan worked, the computer completely froze so I couldn't save the results). Do you see anything of concern that could be causing our problem? It is an older computer but we've tried to keep up on maintenance (cleaned/replaced fan once when it started making noise) so has worked well thus far (besides a few infections over the past few years that we were able to clean up with Spybot S&D and then MBAM). We haven't installed any new programs recently (unless my fiance is too embarrassed to tell me about some websites he's looked at, which wouldn't sur... Read more
