T530 won't boot from USB flash drive -- ThinkPad

Q: T530 won't boot from USB flash drive -- ThinkPad

I've been trying to find a solution for two full dsays now.My problem:Yesterday morning my t530 windows 10 (upgrade from 8.1) did not open normally. Slow booting and once in Windows, no more audio or wifi or access to startup menu. I did have two upgrades this week, one from Windows 10 and another for the new Bitdefender 2017 upgrade which I accepted. I don't know for sure if there is a link but I suspect there is. I have intented doing a refresh, reset from the diagnostic page and form the prompt page a scan and scannow but to no avail. I downloaded on a bootable USB flash drive rufus windows 10. I have disables secure boot and enabled legacy. When I do an F12 I see the nane of my USB HDD in the list, but when i press enter it just goes back to the top the Boot Menu screen to Windows Boot manager. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I wouldn't use rufus. I suggest making the USB stick in UEFI mode from a computer running with a UEFI boot using the MS media creation tool:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can boot from the USB stick in UEFI mode.

I just got a new Lenovo W540.  I installed a new Samsung EVO SSD inside to replace the stock mechanical hard drive.  I'm now trying to boot from a flash drive to clean install Windows.  I've done this so many times before on other laptops and desktops without a problem.  For some reason now it will not boot from the flash drive.  It shows it as available in the BIOS but it looks like it reads it for just a second and then goes right back to the screen that allows me to choose which drive I want to put to.  No matter what I try this will not work.  The same flash drive works fine in other computers to boot to. I did check to make sure the USB drive was not excluded in the BIOS and it is not. Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Hello and welcome,

What operating system are you trying to install?  How did you prepare your flash drive?  Are you trying to boot in UEFI or legacy mode?  The flash drive prep is different depending on which mode you're trying to use.

Ok, so here's a long story. Purchased a Thinkpad T530 5 years ago. Configured it with two drives that came from Lenovo (one in main HDD bay, another one in Ultrabay - one was IIRC Hitachi and the other one Toshiba, can't remember which was installed in which bay). OS was Windows 8 Home (installed on HDD in main bay) which I sported for a only few weeks since I was confronted with Ultrabay HDD constantly (every 5-10 minutes) parking its head (clicking noise). Being unable to successfully resolve the issue I decided to ditch Windows 8 and install Windows XP 32-bit (also on the main bay HDD). Problem? Gone. In the meantime, I decided to sport a dual-boot system and installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)  on the Ultrabay HDD (in the meantime I replaced the Ultrabay HDD that came from Lenovo with a WD 7500BPKT drive). Problem? None whatsoever, probably because the HDD was constantly in use since it had a OS (which became my main OS) installed on it. Fast forward to a few days ago. Bought a Crucial MX300 2TB 2.5'' SSD and installed it into the main HDD bay. Purchased a SAMSUNG 850 EVO mSATA SSD and installed it into the mPCIE slot. Left the WD 7500BPKT HDD in Ultrabay. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) onto Samsung mSATA SSD and? Problem with Ultrabay HDD constantly (not as frequently as other people using AHCI+Windows+Intel Rapid Storage drivers were reporting though - once every 5-10 minutes in my case vs once every minute or so as reported by other users) parkin... A:Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

Greetings - I have a Lenovo T530 Laptop - Windows 10 installed. Each time I attempt to shut down the laptop, the laptop automatically restarts itself. I replaced that power jack because the power button also wasn't working either. I had this same problem regardless of whether Windows 7 or 10 was on it. I have 10 and loaded most Lenovo Drivers, including any with management, chipset. Also, the power options are reset to default - that didn't make any difference either. According to the diagnostics tests, there are no hardware issues. It is only happening on this particular T530 - not have been able to replicate the same problem on others. Any ideas?? Thank you in advance!

I have a T530 winging its way to me. It is BIOS 2.67 . Is it safe to use a bootable USB stick 2.72 to flash the BIOS or is it risky. In my brief travels I have run into folks having BIOS  probs - I think related to UEFI - the UEFI on this one is set to OFF (BIOS/Main/UEFI Secure Boot = OFF), and I would set the boot order to (legacy,UEFI). In other words I won't be using UEFI unless the USB flash drive happens to be UEFI which I think the 2.72  stick is. I will be moving my SSD from my V570 to this one. It has dual boot Win10 Pro 1803 and win7 Pro. I mainly wanted this for the USB3, but has faster CPU. I have diag on a bootable USB stick which I will run first - ran it on V570 and works fine. I had UEFI/GPT on my box briefly but went back to BIOS/MBR and avoid UEFI like the plague... Geek from 3.11 and win 95... Thanks!!!

Hi, my T530 has recently starting giving me trouble rebooting in regular mode. Whereas I can reboot in safe mode, I do not even reach the initial login screen when I attempt to start-up regularly. All I get is a black screen with a visible cursor. Any ideas where this is coming from and what problems I have?

A:Thinkpad T530 not starting in regular mode

Most likely a bad driver since in Safe Mode windows uses generic drivers.   My guess would be the video driver, so while in Safe Mode, use device manager to uninstall the existing video driver and start clean. Right click on Start and select Device Manager or Start >> Run and type: devmgmt.msc  and press EnterClick on Display Adapters to openRight Click on the Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall,  making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device".RebootIf it was the video driver, then Windows should boot normally using a generic driver, and then download and install a new driver via Windows Update. Since it just started, running a disk check (chkdsk) would be a good idea too.Right Click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin) and press EnterIn the Command Prompt (Admin) window, type:   chkdsk C: /f   and press EnterPress Y to accept scheduling scan for next bootReboot and it will run at startupGood Luck,

Hello,I will write first what my goal is. I would like to have USB 3.0 port on the ExpressCard card (I can buy a new one recommended), but it should be able to supply power, feven only for a small pendrive, a smartphone, although my first goal was to connect at least one external USB drive.I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 laptop.I really need extra USB ports in it.So I bought one ExpressCard/34 card first, which adds 2 USB3.0 ports and has the option of additional power supply. This is a Manhattan card.Link:https://manhattanproducts.eu/manhattan-en-superspeed-usb-expresscard34-150583.htmlI installed the NEC uPD720200 driver which was on attached CD.Initially, I was hoping to even connect 2 external USB drives. One time such drive was successfully connected. After this one time, after entering the disk it is in a moment disconnected or there is no sign that I connected it (even no sound). The disk normally works on other USB ports. With a pendrive only 1GB, it was the same. The smastphone also only plugs in so that it only powers it, but it does not shot its disk or it shows it, but it is unavailable to enter it.So I bought another ExpresCard card with 2 USB3.0, this time from 4World company. It also has the possibility of power supply (cable included).Link:https://ikupiec.pl/Product/Index?Id=6748&path=trueI uninstalled that NEC driver uPD720200 from Manhattan and I tried to install the NEC driver uPD720202 from the 4World motherboard, but I couldn't because there was a message... Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

Hi. I can't get the webcam to work. I got this laptop around mid June of this year. Tried to use the webcam for the first time today, Nothing. My device manager doesn't even list a camera. I tried to intall the driver (twice) to see if that would help, but as far as I can see, it's had exactly 0 effect. I downloaded the lenovo settings app, and it's not there, either. At least, I see no setting options for it. But this model of laptop supposedly has a webcam built in, and my model looks pretty much exactly like the others I see on google images, except for a circly light thing in the strip where the camera is supposed to be. I have no idea what the hardware/wiring should even look like so I can't help there. I've been at this for hours. At this point I would just buy a webcam off Amazon or something if I could be sure that the laptop would actually register it.

I had an 80GB Seagate IDE hard drive in my Dell Dimension 2400 that was clearly dying. I have been using a boot CD to connect to the Internet for days now. I have replaced the old hard drive with an unused 250GB WD IDE drive and with difficulty gotten the computer to recognize it. I intended to boot to flash drive and use the boot CD to execute the transfer of an image of the old Seagate drive from its location on my external hard drive to the new internal hard drive. But the computer will only boot to flash drive when the new internal hard drive is removed. When the drive is in and I click Enter on "6. Hi My T530 will not boot properly. I think that there is some software glitch on my T530 hard drive stopping it booting. It was installed with Windows 10. I tried all the blue screen functions including refresh whilst maintaining files. None worked.I also have a T470 with Windows 10 installed.I would like to download the files from the T530 hard drive before reinstalling Windows 10. I do not have an external hard drive caddy and would rather not have the expense of buying one - otherwise I would just put the drive in that and copy the files.I would like to put the SSD hard drive from the T470 into the main bay of the T530 to see whether it all works ok and if so to put the the old hard drive from the T530 in a caddy in the ultrabay to get the files off it, before then reinstalling it using a system image on a portable hard drive. Will this scheme work? Can I take the hard drive from the T470 and put it in the T530 and expect the T530 to function? Can I do any damage thereby? Thanks for your help Dan

Hi, all, I have a new Thinkpad E560 with Windows 7 Pro that has what looks like an intermittent memory problem.  I created a USB drive from the instructions at http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm  (I tried both Linux and Windows versions).  The system does not recognize the USB drive at boot time.  I have bothe Legacy and UEFI boot options enabled and have tried giving each priority.  Nothing I do will allow the system to recognize the USB drive at boot time.  I tried crateing the USB image with both Windows and Linux commands; no difference.Normally I would say this is a bad USB image except - the USB drive boots fine from an Oracle VirtualBox session.  And a Linux boot USB drive created from a VirtualBox session is recognized and boots just fine on startup. At this point I'm at a loss.  Obviously there is something in hte E560 boot code which does not allow this particular image to be recognized, although another one is.  And VirtualBox recognizes the boot image just fine, also.Any idea what in the boot process would not allow the USB drive to be recognized?  I'd really like to get this booting so I can determine if I do actually have a memory problem or not.TIA.

My metro apps were minimizing after 10 seconds or so. I saw a post that it could be amtivirus related, so I downloaded tools to remove the ones I had used the past year. Malwarebytes' uninstaller clean up progrm told me it needed to reboot in safe mode. I let it do so.

I only can press DEL for BIOS setup or F12. I don't have a way to change it out of safe mode.

The Metro app issue could be from a recent Windows update.

I do have the cds that came with the computer. Can I put them on a usb flash drive and run set up from there? If so, how do I make it bootable? I would like to do a restore or fix. I tried Bart PE but that didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Peggie

Hey everyone. I have one question. I have a set of HP recovery discs that I need to use to restore my OS on my new hard drive on my laptop. My DVD drive is bad, so here's my question:

If I were to copy the HP recovery discs to USB flash drives, would it boot up on my laptop if I were to set the USB drive to boot? Or, is there other steps I need to follow to make this work? Thanks.

A:Using USB Flash Drive To Boot...

Copy won't work for the first disc (it is bootable), so the flash drive has to be "bootable" also, not sure if it can be done with more than one disc involved.

I can tell you it would be much easier to replace the DVD drive.

Ok, so i'm trying to do a fresh install of windows but i can't get it to boot properly from flash drive. I've tried the microsoft usb tool and creating a uefi drive through rufus. I searched through bios endlessly and can't find CSM anywhere, i've also tried legacy on and off. Whenever i boot from the drive it skips right over to the hard drive, even if i take the hdd out of the boot list it just says "add proper boot device and press any key". I'm sporting a M5A78L-M LX plus mobo and an FX-6300, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!.

I have had 1000 issues, but i'm going to try and narrow it down. it seems like everytime I try to fix a computer, nothing ever just does what it is supposed to.

At the moment I created a boot drive out of my flash drive with windows 7. I set it to boot first on my bios and it loads but hangs up on the first background screen after the windows logo and nothing happens.

This info may help. I have two hard drives plugged in (IDE). the master is the one I want to do a clean install of windows. The slave drive already has windows and if I boot from it I can get to the desktop, but the problem is when I try to run the install from it and the computer restarts after the second step in the install for the main HD, it doesn't try to continue the install.

Ive been working on this for a week...please help.

So I'm trying to format my PC.
I can't boot from my USB flash drive or my DVD.

I've tried using my:
Original Installation Disc which the PC is currently running (Vista x64 OEM)
Windows 7 Technet Disc
Fresh Ubuntu 9.1 (for testing purposes, also failed to boot)
I've tried:
multiple discs each with a fresh download and burned .iso
changing boot priority
going through the Boot Menu to select the USB-FDD or CD-ROM options
But the computer boots right through each of the medias.
I can see that my USB and DVD-rom drive are both lighting up.. during before the screen launches to the big Windows Vista logo screen.
Can anybody suggest what I should do?

Thanks!

A:Cant boot from Flash or DVD drive

Go to bios, (check computer manual) then set it to boot from DVD/CD. This will work.

You have to find out which key to push to get to bios, but usually it is either f12 or f2. You repeatedly press it during boot up. If you get to the splash screen, try again.

I have a problem booting from 2GB USB flash drives. I have no problem with
4 GB USBs. I've tried 3 different 2GB flash drives (2 brands Lexar, Toshiba)

Examples include the USB bootable system repair and the Hirens boot USB.
Both are under 500MB! Both are fine with 4GB USBs.

The computer's an Acer Aspire desktop.
I can't see anything obvious in the BIOS settings - I'm totally puzzled.
