ThinkPad X1 Extreme not charging

Q: ThinkPad X1 Extreme not charging

Hi I bought a X1 Extreme last week and it's driving me nuts already. The notebook simply does not charge. When I plug-in the power adapter, Windows says that the power supply is plugged-in. But the battery status doesn't change, in both ways (it's not charging but also not discharging). It just stays at the current charging status for hours. I also have Lenovo dockingstation "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 170W" and it's the same problem. After a research on the internet, I found the following article which actually helps, but only for a single charge. But as soon as I unplug the power supply again, I have to reboot again, turn of the battery in the BIOS and reconnect the power supply again. https://stebalien.com/blog/fix-for-lenovo-x1-carbon-not-charging/ The drivers are all up to date (installed via Lenovo System Update application). Does anybody suffer from this issue aswell? Thanks for your help!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

The ThinkVision documents say that you can charge a Thinkpad connected to the ThinkVision monitor using a Usb-c Connector.  Have tried and tried (using one of the provided cable) and failed.  Is this possible or did I mis-read the documentation?  Thanks!

Does the ThinkPad X1 Extreme support any sort of charging over USB-C, be it trickle/regular/fast(er) charging? To clarify, does it support receiving a charge via USB-C in the case that the (slick) 135W charger is not in my bag? A) If it does support charging, where can I find:specificationsdetailed instructionsdescription of expected behaviors (e.g. one port is "better" than the other, or "never plug in the Lenovo charger while charging via USB-C", or "to charge via USB-C the X1 Extreme must be sleeping")B) Will any/all of these work in a pinch, or better than a pinch?Anker wall chargers?Anker power banks?Apple MacBook 87W power adapter?Nintendo Switch default AC adapter? Hey, Just got my new X1 Extreme Gen 2 and the docking station (which doubles as a charger) doesn't charge. All other functionality of the dock works. Dock works fine with both my Macbook Pro's (13 & 15). The dock brand is Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD and the model number is F4U095. I have already updated the bios and software in line with https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/sk/en/solutions/ht508988 even though my model isn't listed as an affected one. Both my Apple power adapters work and charge the X1 Extreme also... is it because the thunderbolt from the dock is also carrying data and video? Surely not? Thanks in advance.

So at random, the laptop will stop charging and simply says 'plugged in, not charging'. Are there more permanent solutions than going into BIOS and disabling built-in battery? I'd hate for this to be a returning issue (this is the 2nd time this occurs). Thanks for any suggestions! I've browsed the fora and know also of some other solutions, but I'm not satisfied with having to solve something like this more than once. What if I don't notice it, and someday have to run out with 40% battery left? Not desirable, specially given the price of these laptops.

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Hello, I've been using Thinkpad X1 Extreme for the past 1.5 months. And now speakers(or only right one I believe) started having an issue with crackled/noise sound on high frequencies. It's almost unusable to listen something with speakers because of how painfull it to the ears.  Is there anything possible to do with it to fix it? Hi, I have  a Thinkpad X380 Yoga. The Thunderbolt 3 Dock will not charge my Thinkpad X380 YOGA, and a message saying that the dock is not providing enough power shows up on my minitor. I wonder if anyone have a solution to this problem. It does not make  sense to have to connect the Thunderbold AND the AC power to the Thinkpad, it should be just ONE Thunderbold cord. 1. My power brick is 135W, 20V-6.75A2. I am connecting the Thunderbolt to throuogh the port on the back of the dock.3. I have went to BIOS  and under power section, "disable the battary for technical service" and pwered it back on. None of the above solutions worked.

Hello everyone,,My Thinkpad (newest Bios 1.25) is connected to a Samsung LC34H892 monitor via USB-C. This works fine, charging works as well but only if I attach the Thinpad before turning it on. The monitor offers only 60 Watt - so charging is not super fast. But when I reconnect it while turned on, it will not start to charge again (video signal is still working). Charging works again if I turn it off and on again (only reboot will not work). With a LG 38UC99 monitor charging does not work at all. I have tried four differen USB-C cables without success (with a Dell XPS 15 both monitors and all cables work in all cases). Any ideas?

I uninstalled Lenovo Vantage because of the recent terrible update that removed some useful features and added a bunch of adware-like features. There were only two major things I used it for anyway: driver updates and battery charge threshold.  I can get updates easily with Lenovo System Update. However, I'm not sure if there's a way to instate a battery charging threshold on my Lenovo X1 Extreme without it. Anyone know of any way to do this without using Lenovo Vantage?

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Yoga 460 with Thinkpad Pen Pro. I leave it in the laptop slot for charging for more than a day and it gives me only a few minutes of usage. As per the user guide, it should be 80% charge in 15 seconds and 100% after 5 minutes. But it runs out of charge very soon. It shows me the low battery level indicator as soon as I use it on the screen. First day of usage (appox 4 days ago) it gave me about 30 - 45 minutes of continuous. But after that not more than 5 minutes. Please let me know if this is an issue with the Pen or Laptop charging port. Is there any way I can troubleshoot it?Please also let me know the average usage time for the pen, if you are continuously using it.

Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

This laptop just came in yesterday. Initially even after installing all the updates, the computer was running rather sluggish and slow compared to my previous 2 year old Asus Laptop, in terms of scrolling through webpages, pdf and responsiveness. Now I've reinstalled Windows 10, some of the sluggishness is gone but on Google Drive and Chrome I still find that it is slower compared to my previous laptop.  Do I have a defective unit? Does anyone else have the same problem?

I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!

Hello, last week on Friday I closed my laptop and went home, after opening the lid to start working, my laptop didn't boot up. So I force shutdown it (holding the power button for like 20 seconds), after pressing the power-on button, the laptop didn't boot up, instead it started going in a loop, the keyboard backlit started turning on and the fans started, but after 2-3 seconds it powered off automatically, and again powered on automatically with the same behaviour (keyboard backlit and the fans started turning on), this went on and on, until I pressed the button on the back of the laptop, now, when I turned on the laptop, it started w/o any problems. On Saturday when I wanted to wake up my laptop again, it didn't, this time I did the same as above, so forced shut it down, and pressed the power on button, but this time, it didn't turn on, even when I pressed the button on the back of the laptop, and the laptop still has the same behaviour as above. I opened the laptop and changed the RAM slots: nothing  has changedI opened and changed the hard drives, and even took one of them: nothing has changed The laptop doesn't even show the Lenovo sign when I power on the laptop. And I can't even access BIOS. And interestingly my guarantee ended one day before this happened (on Thursday!) Any help would be great. Thanks a lot

When I need to use it at about 11:30 AM, my computer is at around 10% and is very hot to the touch. It is so hot that one can receive a burn if held for too long. I don't think this is normal. A laptop should only lose a few percent over a couple of hours and shouldn't overheat if it isn't even running. - the computer claims that my wifi card isn't plugged in correctly. I did not want to tamper with the wires so I did a simple restart. The wifi seemed to work again, but after a few days I run into the same problem. Please help me out here.
