Abnormal Mouse Cursor Behavior, Date/Time reformatted

Q: Abnormal Mouse Cursor Behavior, Date/Time reformatted

Hello,
I've been invaded!!! The mouse cursor is quite irratic. When performing a single click on a form, it is sometimes interpreted as a double click. When dragging a form the form doesn't respond or it will respond to the drag sporadically. When attempting to highlight text, image, etc., the highlight doesn't happen or only a partial highlight will occur. It is very annoying which is what I'm sure is the mission of the designer of this bug, virus, trojan, whatever. Also, at the same time this invader changed the format of the system date/time form standard time to military and month/day/year to year/month/day. I've ran the AVG anti-virus program and AVG root toolkit - they've both came up without finding any foreigners. I've ran Spybot and it to came up empty-handed. The operating system on this computer is XP sp3.

Sincerely,
rascaal

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

System manufacturer and model?

FWIW: System problems such as have (so far) described...may occur for various reasons...malware may be among them, but let's try a few things.

First...I'd like you to run the chkdsk /r command. Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen query and hit Enter. Reboot the system and let the command execute, the system will boot into XP when the command has completed.

Second...I'd like you to enter the BIOS and check the time/date reflected there and ensure that all settings are still as they should be.

Third...if your mouse still behaves erratically, try a different mouse.

When I get SAs for "Suspicion of identity theft based on abnormal behavior" I can see the list of target computers and Kerberos services but no timestamp, source computer, or domain controller information.
Where can this data be found in ATA?

Hi,

I booted my computer yesterday and Windows XP Pro's date/time was misconfigured. Also on my desktop was an MS-DOS file named IOG. I doubled clicked on IOG and a DOS window opened up and closed real quick. Didn't have time to catch what exactly it was processing. I'm not sure if my computer is infected or not so I appreciate any help I can get. AVG Free didn't catch anything and neither did AVG Anti-spyware. Tried running Kaspersky Online Scanner but I keep getting an error message.

Running win7 all updates current.

I've been noticing something that seems really bazaar to me. I've never seen it before.

I haven't figured out what confluence of circumstances cause it but what I see is shown in the two sets of images attached. In these images the scheme I have set is the `windows inverted extra large scheme'.

In the default scheme (windows aero system scheme) (not in the image) it is not near as ugly.. but I think mainly because its quite a lot smaller. In that scheme it appears as a bit of a double image but still quite noticeable. (aero scheme not shown below)

I did before and after in the images.... top row after the bazaaro thing started, bottom normal

I first tried to do the screen grabs by taking a short video with camtasia and then save out the appropriate frames...(in order to capture the cursor) but oddly enough, in the video, the problem
just disappears. or rather it cannot be seen, so I had to resort to taking the shots with
my cell phone. Those are the top row below.

Since the bottom row is in plain mode I was able to grab them with my little cheapo screen grabber.

I did 3 shots against different backgrounds so it would show better what I see.
... What in the heck would cause something like this happen?

From the images, it looks like something easy we can fix:

Click -control panel. Hardware and sound. Mouse-pointers tab-UNcheck allow themes to change mouse pointers. Click ok and restart.

Okay, this is a strange one. I have included all the troubleshooting steps I've tried, so please read through before making suggestions.

Last night out of the blue, after always working perfectly, my mouse pointer started to randomly freeze for a second or two. When it did move, it moved smoothly and normally; but every few seconds or so it would get stuck for a moment (you can check out what kind of mouse it is in my specs). The mouse wheel and buttons are fine, no problems at all; just the pointer is messing with me. The touchpad works perfectly as well.

It works perfectly after a reboot. But over time it starts to break down again. In fact, I left it alone overnight, and this morning the pointer would barely move at all.
I rebooted again, and noticed that at the blue "Restarting" screen the mouse pointer was instantly back to normal. But again, after reboot it would be fine at first but then start acting up, getting worse as time went on.

Troubleshooting I have already tried:
1. Replaced the mouse battery.
2. Removed the USB receiver and put it back in.
3. Uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, Windows installed generic HID-compliant driver.
4. Malware scan
5. Tried a different mouse

Oddly, after trying a different mouse and then switching back to the original, it worked fine for much longer before starting to break down again. At the time of this post, the pointer is sticking but not as badly, and taking longer to deteriorate.

I'm about to try a system ... Read more

The next day I turn it on and it takes a little longer to boot and when opening, closing, or minimizing files, it fades in and out a little longer than usual. That day it was working fine all I did was updated my sound driver even after I had to restart it still was fine. Even when I was browsing thru the bios settings it was like I had to wait a few seconds to make a change or go to the next setting. Believe me it's weird and I can't seem to find the problem.

I'm not entirely sure that this belongs in the hardware forum, due to the fact that I don't know the origin of this problem, but here goes:
Since about two or three weeks ago, the left mouse button on my Synaptics touchpad has been behaving in a very irregular manner, and has gradually become more erratic with use.

Here are the abnormalities I have observed:
Clicks not happening when the button is pressed (the touchpad icon in the system tray does not indicate clicks when this happens)
Missed clicks being played back at a later time, but only once the button is pressed again, and never when the button is not pressed
Normal dragging/selecting being ended (ex: the button no longer reports being held down, even when it is held down)
Dragging/selecting being activated again after the above occurrence while the button is still held down

This results in the following things happening:
Items being double-clicked when the button is pressed once
Items that appear underneath the mouse following the preceeding event being clicked (if enough clicks are played back at that time)
Items being dragged are dropped while the mouse button is held down
When pressing and holding the button to drag a window, the title bar is double-clicked, maximizing the window (highly annoying and very inconvenient)
The list goes on, but you get the idea....

I have also observed the following behaviors:
Software that simulates mouse clicks (ex: AutoHotkey) functions properly
Users in control of the ... Read more

Hello,

It is terribly slow sometimes taking more than five minutes to load a web page (DSL Connection). There are random pop ups from all kinds of different companies and places. I have also noticed our browser is redirected to various unknown ad or pornographic sites at any given time. There have also been strange occurences with the name of our hometown Alpharetta, GA placed strategically in ads or other strange offerings on different web pages. I have tried numerous anti virus and anti spyware removers with no luck. Trend Micro House Call, Dr Web cure it, AVG Anti Spyware, Adaware, Trojan Remover, just to name a few. Occasionally one will pick up one or two viruses, but I am always advised by the program that the virus is removed and given a clan bill of health afterwards. It probably has more to do with a faulty keyboard than anything. Cheap ones tend to do that. Also check for crumbs and make sure no liquid fell into it, if any liquid did wait for it to dry up first.

Hello people:

I run a dual boot config (Win2K & XP pro) with my system. Under Win2K (SP4), if I disable the network through any known method, it causes the mouse to become really slow and sometimes a rapid clicking sound in the background, as if someone were holding a key on the kb. Even if I reenable the network connection, the mouse pointer will remain slow. It seems that a warm boot fixes the symptoms until I disable the network.
Otherwise, the system runs completely normal. I'd obviously like to fix this so that I don't have to have the network connection enabled 24/7

Hello,

First I just wanted to say thank you for potentially helping me with this problem. I've had this laptop for about 3 years now with little to no issues. I use Avast! Antivirus and regularly run scans as well as Malware Bytes whenever I start to suspect something might be off. Sometimes, my computer will get sluggish, though it's usually because I haven't restarted it in a while (Closing the lid leaves to hibernation mode instead of shut down), and the probably will normally be fixed after running ccleaner, restarting, and running ccleaner again. Lately, however, my computer has been freezing up, everything loads at a snails pace, and my usual tactics haven't been working for very long (it slows down again after an hour or two versus days or even weeks later). I haven't done much different to it lately except there is one thing I've been noticing: I uninstalled the Opera browser easily months back, but, when I run ccleaner, it shows that it's cleaning out information from Opera as well as the usual Firefox and Chrome every time. I don't know if that means anything significant, but I figured it was worth sharing. Please help me out; I'm open to any and all advice.

Hello,
We have ATA running for about 2-3 months now. Until now I had only fals alerts. That is good I think, but one thing is very annoying.
ATA "learns" what normal user behaviour is. We also have a quite large terminal server farm which daily produces a lot of false Alarms as users not always logon to the same server.
Is there a way to ignore, whitelist or whatever logons to our terminal server farm?

Occasionally we get these alerts when someone logs into a remote desktop farm and lands on a new (to the user) node in the cluster.   Is there a way to exempt these hosts (preferably via AD group) for this particular detection?

I have some Suspicion of identity theft based on abnormal behavior alerts and one alert in particular for a user was flagged as requesting access to 32 abnormal resources. When reviewing the alert, I see some resources, both Windows servers and Windows workstations,
tagged as CIFS, some server access flagged as LDAP, etc.
To determine if the user truly accessed the resources listed, what other logs should I be reviewing? Domain controller logs? Netflow/network traffic logs?

If after investigating, I conclude the alert was a false positive and I close and exclude the user, what exactly am I excluding? Any activity from the user, or just the specific activity occurred for that user for those defined resources?
Thx

I have recently encountered a problem with explorer.exe. A black screen with only mouse cursor appears for long time after login to my ID, it takes approximately 7 to 10 mins before the desk top loading up.

Anyway every time I now logon I have to press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' and then open Task Manager, and run a new task 'explorer.exe' and everything is loading quickly. I'm just wondering why it keeps doing this?

Thanks, all help is appreciated,
Val

Can you boot into safe mode? If you can try SFC. Also if safe mode works try a clean startup.

I just posted this here because I don't know where else to put this.

I was downloading from filesonic when I noticed that the waiting time was moving abnormally slow - a 15-minute waiting time took more than that (45 minutes or so?) - but it sped up, or moved normally, when I moved the mouse cursor (working on a touch pad). I refreshed the page and went to the link several times but it didn't do anything. At times the waiting time countdown would restart after the previous countdown finished. Then I finally got a dialogue box saying System Error, so I decided to come back tomorrow.

I have a habit of scanning files I download, and they showed no virus (Emsisoft and Avira, both the free versions, on the folder the files were in showed nothing). But when I uploaded one o the files to virustotal, the progress circle (?) wasn't moving - literally, frozen - unless I moved the mouse cursor. The percentage count that appears at the bottom didn't even appear until I moved the cursor. And when it got to the page listing the results, the striped progress bar under the status (queued in red, analyzing in green, etc) didn't move unless I moved the mouse cursor.

I ran a Hitman Pro scan on the computer and came up with nothing. Doing an Emsisoft scan now. The progress bars of these program updates (Avira and Emsisoft anyway) are working fine, from what I saw of them (but then again I was using the mouse cursor). The scan progress bars are working fine.

I haven't tried downloadin... Read more

Tried scanning with Emsisoft and Malwarebytes, but weird things happened. The Emsisoft scan finished quickly - far faster than the time it usually took - with no infections found. I updated Malwarebytes first, but somehow the program ended up re-installing (?): there was a message saying I should update the program, but I found myself with the same dialogue boxes as an installation. Went through with it anyway. Scanning with Emsisoft again, just in case.

hi all,
i had an user account being flagged for suspicion of identity theft based on abnormal behavior. this user account is a domain admin and is no longer accessed by anyone. it was used to setup the hyper-v hypervisors in my environment.
unfortunately, there seems to be alot of kerberos traffic under this account round the clock (1000 records every hourbased on the timeline). however, i did a check and there are no services running using this account. in the excel report, many legitimate
servers are listed as abnormal resources. some of the hypervisors are listed as normal resouces though. may i know how can i identify the cause of these activity?

Hi,
We installed ATA about a month and a half ago, and we recently began to recieve numerous "Suspicion of identity theft based on abnormal behavior" alerts that show computers with Windows 10 installed accessing other computers in their LAN via SMB(CIFS).
After investiagating this and finding nothing of interest, I searched online and found an article that suggests that these accesses are caused by having Windows Delivery Optimization enabled on your network(It is enabled on our network).
The article suggests that the peer discovery method used in Delivery Optimization might use port 445.
Can you confirm this?

After several weeks of trying to track down the root cause of the above mentioned ATA alert, we have determined WUDO is possibly causing the above mentioned ATA alert to fire.
ATA is finding that hosts are connecting to CIFS of many other systems as well as port 7680.
I have not found any official Microsoft documentation stating WUDO utilizes port 445 but other users like myself mentioned 445 is used for host discovery.  If this is true, shouldn't ATA detect that WUDO and host discovery is in use and not fire several
times an hour?
If not what work is being done to get this fixed in the next or future ATA release.

I have a Windows 7 mutli touch device and every time i touch the screen i get a stupid mouse graphic. Its really annoying because it has a tendency to get in the way when i am tapping around with my fingers on the screen. I have been unable to find anything
about such a "feature" on the webs. As various combinations including "mouse" and "graphic" and "windows 7" are pretty vanilla search terms.
I am guessing it is some lame "accessability" feature but i have no idea how to fix. please help

A:mouse graphic (not cursor) next to mouse cursor when touching screen

That is called the Touch Pointer, its easy to turn off once you know where to look.
Click Start, type pen in the search box or open control panel aand click Pen and touch.
Click the touch tab and uncheck Show the touch pointer... then just click ok to  close the dialog and the ghostly mouse picture will be gone.

We got this alert and it indicated that a user's account had "Performed interactive login from 2 abnormal servers".  The user said they hadn't.  Looking at the two servers, there are no directories for the user in C:\Users\.  Looking
in the event logs on the two servers, there don't appear to be logons with that user's account.  Are there any more details to be gleaned from ATA that would help us figure this out?

Hi,
My laptop has recently started taking much longer to startup. At the beggining of this year, it was taking around 35/45 seconds to boot to the desktop and be ready to go. Over the last couple of weeks, i have noticed it has been taking longer and longer, it now sometimes takes up to 90 seconds or more, also it takes a particularly long time on the 'Welcome' screen. I know that 90 seconds isn't exactly bad but i don't understand how the time has doubled as there has been no major changes whatsoever. The only changes have been the install of Microsoft Office 2010 in January but as far as i can remember, this made little difference if any at all. I regularly run a registry cleaning programme, defragment the hard drive and scan for viruses etc... I personally don't think this is a case of the laptop just getting slower because of age as i have only had it around 6 months, but please do correct me if i am wrong and my laptop specifications are as follows:

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Intel i7 620m @ 2.67GHz
4Gb DDR3 RAM
250Gb 5400rpm Western Digital HDD
-If you need to know anything else please ask

Any help or adviced would be mch appreciated,
Thanks, Rob

The most immediate cause that comes to mind is A/V software. What are you using? Try switching to a different one, like Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have a machine which takes about 2 minutes to come to the Windows 2000 boot screen. It'll hang at the BIOS POST screen for about 2 minutes, beep, then go to the Windows 2000 boot screen. However, if I disconnect the hard drive, the problem goes away, and boots up quickly. The same thing happens if I boot from a floppy or cd (they boot before the hard drive), as long as I have the hard drive connected. If the drive's not connected, it boots up quickly, and normally. I've tried putting the hard drive at the top of the boot list, and the problem still happens. There's an option in the BIOS for hard drive read delay. I've tried changing it from the minimum to the maximum, and it doesn't seem to have any effect. Does anyone know what might be causing it?

A:Abnormal Boot Time

The hard drive may be faulty, I would also check the voltage of the CMOS battery (should be at least 3V) as a flat battery can cause delays on startup.

Getting a bunch of false positives of "identity theft" based upon abnormal workstations that users are accessing.  Why do we know they are false positives?  The source workstation in every alert was doing Windows Updates right when the
alert hit.  The alerts say the workstation usually accesses 30-40 other workstations over CIFS.
So...this is actually normal behavior for Windows Updates with this new feature: "Windows Update Delivery Optimization".  The feature is available on Windows 10 only (which the OS in all of our alerts).  Check out this for more info on
this feature:  https://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10-windows-update-delivery-optimization
The Windows Update feature makes the workstation reach out to other workstations for its updates instead of going over the internet.  Thats the problem.  Thats whats generating the list of abnormal workstations accessed.
Any ideas on how to "teach" ATA that this is normal?

Greetings, and thanks in advance for your help..

Awhile back I formatted my Windows 10 PCs to show ddd dd-mmm-yyyy on my taskbar clock. This worked happily on my desktop and laptop for months, maybe even a year +

Now (probably starting in the past couple days, if not today), on one of those two PC's, this format will no longer display. It is Okay on the other PC.
What has changed that the taskbar clock space used to expand to fit the "short date" format, but now it will no longer expand - and instead just refuses to display the date at all. (NOTE: I've verified the issue by testing shorter formats -- short formats, like "ddd" show up correctly. Only if you request a longer format will the date not display - evidently because it is too long for the clock area. )

Additional Notes that may help:

* "Working" pc is running build 10586 PC with too small a clock space that won't expand -- Build 14393

*Other differences: Notification/Action center Icon is left of clock on the working PC - Right of clock on the non-working
Right- Clicking on task bar gives "properties" option on working PC -- But "Settings" option on the non-working

( I don't want to prejudice responses - but clearly the implication to me is that some recent OS update is most likely the culprit.)

Thank You

I have a Date/Time field that I need converted to just a Time field.

It comes back with 2/11/12 0:00:00

I need just the 2/11/12

I thought about changing it to a text field but I think there will be an issue with the month because it does not bring back a 0 in from the months with only 1 digit.

This table that I am creating is being sent to a txt file and that is where I see the issue. It looks good in Access, but not the txt file.

Any suggestions?

I am looking to set up a macro or formula that basically inserts the current time when a cell is filled SO:

when a2:a100 is populated with any thing then the corresponding C cell will be populated with the time.

AND

when e2:e1000 is populated wiith anything then the corresponding D Cell will be populated.

Currently I am using this macro.
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
If Target.Cells.Count > 1 Then Exit Sub
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("A6:A100")) Is Nothing Then
With Target(1, 4)
.Value = Time
.EntireColumn.AutoFit
End With
End If
End Sub

which works great for the A and C cells

but it does not work for the other one.. how do i add and modify this so all my needs are met.
I need another 2 sets of 2 macros accross the sheet for time entry.

Troubleshooting a fairly new HP laptop. Had been infected with a virus. Cleaned it all up but was experiencing erratic mouse behavior. The customer claimed the behavior started when he got hit with infection. While the pointer itself moves fine the left and right mouse buttons intermittently act like they are being held down causing the pointer to drag and highlight everything in site. At other times the buttons do nothing at all. At other times the left mouse button triggers a rightclick menu. And at other moments all mouse control is fine. This occurs equally on the touchpad or when using an external USB mouse. I tried disabling the touchpad completely but the problem still occurs when using the external mouse. I tried updating the sypatics touchpad driver but that made no difference either. I finally resorted to wiping and completely reinstalling windows but the problem still persists. For the hell of it I then updated the BIOS firmware but that made no difference either. All keyboard function work fine so I have been having to resort to using the arrow keys and alt tab and such to navigate around. I ran a Passmark Burn in Test and everything passed.

A couple of additional points. I ran the Hirens Boot CD which is similar to the Ultimate Boot CD. I then booted into the Mini Windows XP and the same erratic mouse behavior occured so this is clearly not an operating system issue.
