Error every time attempt to share files

Q: Error every time attempt to share files

I am running a new install of XP professional on a newly built Shuttle desktop, connected to my network and the internet via a Linksys wireless router (this computer is wired).

I have no trouble reading shared folders on other workgroup computers, and no trouble sharing the Shared Documents folder on the desktop. However, whenever I attempt to turn on filesharing for any other folder (right-clidking and selecting 'Sharing and Security ...') Windows Explorer freezes and I get an error message stating it needs to close. I send the error report, then get a DrWatson Debugger error message saying it also needs to close. I send that error report and then WExplorer freezes and I have to exit via the Task Manager, after which WExplorer runs fine.

I haven't found any reference to this problem anywhere; does anyone have any idea what it could be?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a weird problem with one Windows 10 machine.
There is one particular map drive that doesn't display files and folders intermittently and then shows up after some time.
There are other map drives on the machine that don't have a problem.
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,

I've just installed SP3 for Windows XP and since doing so, any files shared on there are no longer accessible from other computers unless I run Network Setup Wizard.

Everything was working fine prior to SP3 - and as soon as I run the wizard, it's works just fine again. The problem is that I don't want to have to run Network Setup Wizard every time I load up Windows.

Anyone who can get to the bottom of this would earn my utmost respect and gratitude!

A:I have to run Network Setup Wizard every time I start Windows, so I can share files

Can I assume XP on all machines and a working home network? If so:
Can you ping the sp3 pc from other pc's on the network?
Can the sp3 machine ping the other machines?
A failure to ping is almost always a firewall isuue.Disable all firewalls if unable to ping

Here are two tutorials from Johnwill and Terrynet on this forum that cover just about all of the basics you will need to check for sharing.
Hope they help

Printer and File Sharing

The following will set up a Microsoft Workgroup for File and Printer Sharing assuming the PCs are already networked via router, ad-hoc wireless or Ethernet (directly or using switch or hub).

In Network and Dial-up Connections (Win 2k Pro) or Network Connections (XP) right click on your connection and select ‘Properties.’ If not already there, install or add a check mark for “Client for Microsoft Networks, “File and Printer sharing …” and “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”

Right click on My Computer and on the Computer Name tab make sure you have a unique computer name and the workgroup name that you want to use for all computers. Change if necessary.

Restart the PC.

You must uninstall or properly configure any 3rd party firewalls on each machine.

Hi All,

I'm having an issue when copying files from a Windows network share. If the file is above 5MB it will start copying and then after a minute or two I will get an error such as:

Interrupted Action
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x8007003B: An unexpected network error occurred.

The network share is in a different office and is accessible over a point-to-point VPN, so the connection is not that fast.

But before everyone tells me to start diagnosing the router and or VPN please take note of the following:

My colleague who is running Windows 7 can copy files from the network share fineIf I run a Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 laptop I can copy the files across fine
I also know it isn't an issue with this particular file share. I set up a little lab, where I had one VM which had a shared folder and 2 other client VMs one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8.1. I limited the bandwidth to the two client
VMs to a similar speed we see across our VPN. The result was that the Windows 8.1 failed with the same error above, whereas the Windows 7 copied fine.

There is also a noticeable difference visually when copying using Windows 8.1 and Windows 7:

One of our users saves powerpoints onto a network share, she has been doing this for years, I upgraded her to office 07 yesterday and this morning she is reporting when she saves a file on the network share it reverts to the previous changes.

The thing is when you close the file and reopen after you have saved, the changes are there. But if you wait 30 seconds the changes are reverted back, has anyone come across this before? There is no error message and annoyingly it looks to have saved the file but it doesn't.

Anyone got any ideas, many thanks.

When I'm on my laptop running Vista, I'm trying to access files on my WinXP machine. I have file sharing set up and until a few days ago, it worked fine. The only change I have made is instaling SP2 on my Vista laptop. My laptop is able to see the shared folders on my XP maching with no problem but I recieve the below error when trying to open file within the shared folders.

Curiously, I get a similar error when I expand the "entire network" on my XP machine and click on anything within the shared folders on my XP machine. This makes me suspect the issue lies with my XP machine, rather the the connection between my PC and laptop.

The error reads as follows...

"\\LOUNGE\shared Files is not accessable. You might not have the permission to use the network resourse. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

The last line about the storage confuses me as there is plenty of HDD space on both machines and there are only a few small files in the share folders, less than 20MB.

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

I hope someone can help, am having real problems. I am unfortunately a bit illiterate when it comes to computer problems.

I went on holiday for two weeks, returned, attempted to log onto the internet and my computer crashed. If I don't attempt to connect to the internet the computer is fine, if I do, it crashes, everytime. I have changed the USB adaptor, which made no difference. Previous to my holiday the last time I logged on to the internet I had no problems. My wireless connection is only two months old, I have fully paid Norton security, and all scans show no problems. I can pick up other networks in the area, as soon as it picks up mine, (and I assume here) and attempts to connect, it causes the computer to shutdown. I have uninstalled the 'netgear', and then reinstalled it, this made no difference.

There is a blue screen which says;

Hi, I have a simple network at home that consists of 2 PCs connected via a crossover cable. They are both running Windows XP Pro. I ran the network wizard on both machines and can share the internet connection fine. However neither computer can share files with the other or share the printer.

When I set folders to ?share this folder on the network? the folder is not visible on the other computer. Both computers have IP addresses set, however neither computer is able to ping the other.

When Computer.A (host of the internet connection) goes to Start -> My Network Places -> ?view workgroup computers? all that shows up in the list is Computer.A.

However if I try to go to ?view workgroup computers? on Computer.B I get the following error message:

?Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator etc.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available?

I have searched the forums and found various steps that I have tried, but I still am not able to get this to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Can share internet but can't share files

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

The quickest fix is a router/hub rather than peer to peer cable.
Do you have file and print sharing turned on?
Try setting up network wizard to something other than "MSHOME"
You might have only internet sharing turned on.
Did you create the files for network or just "finish network setup",
in the wizard?

This has helped me by setting guest password.

Protect your guest account - The guest account can be used by hackers and/or malware to gain greater access to your machine, even when turned off. The guest account can't be removed. However, you can disable it, but this can affect the functionality of your computer. Instead, what you can do, and what you probably should do, is put a strong password on it, and then leave it safely turned off. You do this by opening a command window (start -> run -> type "cmd" and press enter). at the command prompt, type net user guest <password> (where <password> is your chosen password, being something you can remember). After hitting the enter key, the guest account will be password protected. If your machine is networked and authenticating as guest, then you'll need this password to access network shares - if you tell it to remeber the password, it will only ask the once.Click to expand...

I am completely puzzled by my PC's behavior for the past 48 hours. I was on windows 10 but it had been hanging up and freezing ever since I installed the anniversary update a few days ago so I reinstalled windows 7. Everything went the way it should, but after I installed it and got the wifi up and working that's when things went south. I connected to my 2.4ghz network with no issues.. proceeded to download the rest of the drivers and software that I needed with no troubles. Then I decided to switch to my 5ghz network for gaming and the second I enter the wpa2 key and it connects to the network, the computer freezes and blue screens without exception. I ran chkdsk, and mem test and everything checked out with no errors. My temps are all very low, and all of he hardware is a year old tops. I have used this exact windows version before with the same boot media and drivers and never had an issue like this. I tried updating the drivers, and using windows 8.1, and windows 10 drivers but the issue persists. It simply won't connect to the 5ghz network without blue screening for some reason.
If I had to guess I'd say it's the motherboard? But I don't know. Do you guys have any thoughts on this issue?

I bought a XFX HD 7850 2GB less than 2 weeks ago and has experienced numerous BSOD all with the same error message "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from time out failed" I've tried various versions of AMD's catalyst driver but it has not resolved my issue. I have not attempted to overclock the GPU, all factory default settings.

The BSOD's are not easily reproducible. So far, it's happened only when I play Skyrim, after maybe 40+ minutes of gaming (but not always, as I've gone longer than that without experiencing the BSOD). What happens is that I would see artifacting on the screen: long, thin, triangles pointing to the center of the screen, when the artifacting occurs there is a GPU temperature spike (it goes to around 66 degrees celcius), and then the BSOD. The first BSOD I experienced, there was no artifacting. I had exited Skyrim and launched FireFox, and was immediately hit with a BSOD with that error message.

Using MSI Afterburner to keep track of the GPU temp, it normally does not go above 60 - 62 degrees celcius during Skyrim (idles at 27 - 30 degrees celcius). I can't reproduce the BSOD using GPU stress testing utilities like Furmark and MSI Kombuster (highest temperature seen is 66 degress celcius).

Driver versions I've used:

1) installed new GPU, uninstalled old nvidia driver, cleaned orphan nividia driver files in safe mode using Driver Sweeper, installed catalyst driver version 13.1. Experienced first BSOD in Skyrim.

hi, you say it does not recognise the system recovery disk, have you accessed the BIOS, by pressing f1, f10, f10 or del then go to boot order and make sure the cd is booting first then the hard drive. Also in the bios check if the cd-ROM is detected.
Is it possible to access safemode through f8? or can you only choose the two options displayed?
I think it might be that your hard drive is failing,
Also make sure the BIOS setup doesn't inhibit wrting to the boot sector
Check this to see if the hard drive is failing.

Yes that is either a bug or by design. The Library folders do not save the write permissions and it's just so lame why they did it this way.

If you are comfortable working in the registry you can try looking at this page.

But first make sure you create a restore point and export the registry keys before changing them just in case you have to change them back.

Is it just the browsing that takes long? or does working on the network also take longer than the other workstations?

Hope this works.

For some reason my laptop takes forever to connect to a shared drive on my desktop on my home network. I've tried connecting to it by mapping the drive and through windows explorer and same thing. Sometimes it won't even connect at all. I don't have this issue with other computers on the network. And when I say a long time I am meaning like 5 minutes or more. At first it was maybe only 1-2 minutes but it is getting worse. My mouse icon has had the spinning ring around it trying to connect the whole time I have been writing this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Both computers are Win 7 pro x64 with sp1. Desktop is wired directly to the router and laptop has excellent signal strength. Both have DHCP reservations set in the router. The way I usually connect is by starting a run box and typing \\[desktop pc name]\[share] then it just spins for a while.

From your laptop's Device Manager, locate the network adapter in question, right click on it, choose Advanced Tab, find link Speed and Duplex. Change the Auto Detect to Auto Negotiate 1000 or 100mbps. See if it helps.

Firewall or Security Software might be also interfering.

I have looked through all the similar threads but still couldn't find a solution to this.  We have Windows 7 machines logging into a Windows 2008 AD networks. While on the network, our clients are set to use internal DNS set by DHCP. A few of our
folks have offline files setup on their home drives.  These users can successfully log onto their computers offline.  When they attempt to access their offline files however, they receive the message "The system has detected a possible attempt
to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you" along with the option to provide their credentials. Entering their credentials fails of course. The work around for them is to disconnect from the wireless network
or disable the WLAN card. At that point they can access their offline files.  But as soon as they reboot, they receive the same message.  If they reboot with the WLAN card disabled, they will not receive this message and are able to access their
offline files.  Additionally these users are setup with VPN. If they enable VPN, the issue is corrected and they can again access their offline files.

We've attempted removing and rejoining to AD, removing their user profiles and completely rebuilding the laptop from scratch. It appears when the laptop is connected to a wireless network, it wants to contact our AD network. The articles below haven't offered
a solution.

I sent my computer to be wiped clean about a month ago due to viruses/malware and things of the like. A coupleweeks after it was picked up I started getting an error message that says no OS found on harddrive. Sometimes it immediately goes to the message at startup but most of the time it allows me to use my laptop for few min or hours then it says critical error will restart for when corrected and then it goes to the previous message about no OS on hard drive. Hey all,

I hope someone can help me here.

I got a new blue screen of death I haven't experienced before; "File:\BCD 0xc0000034" error where I was told Windows couldn't boot up and needed a repair disc/new boot file. Luckily I had a laptop I could use and tried to find a solution. The only thing I could find was to insert the install disc if I didn't have a Repair disc. Which I didn't. I didn't have the install disc either since I bought my computer with preinstalled Windows 8 and for some reason my supplier didn't supply a Windows disc :(

Luckily, I thought, my work place had lots of Windows 8 disc lying around and I just took one of those. The solution I found said that when I booted from that disc, I would get the option to repair my install. I inserted the disc, got it to boot from the disc, but I didn't get an option to repair my Windows boot file. So I thought, okay, I will try to just click next and see what happens.
Long story made short; I now have two installations of Windows 8 on my computer.

The old installation is on my SSD and my new installation is on a normal harddisk. From what I can see, the new installation is completely clean; ie. no drivers, no bookmarks, no applications, all my setups gone for every program.
I can see almost every program I've installed when browsing my folders, but Windows searcher can't find them.

This is naturally frustrating and I feel silly for trying what I did.

But how can I fix my computer to get my old insta... Read more

I tried to load the OS (WinXP Pro) on a new HD in a brand new computer project.

MB: ECS Black Series GF8200A, AM2+/AM3, NVIDIA GeForce 8200
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+
HD: Seagate Barracuda, SATA, ST3500418AS, 500GB
RAM: G. Skill, F2-6400CL5D, 4GBPQ
DVD: Samsung, SATA
PS: Thermaltake Purepower 500W

The system started to load the OS, but then I received a message that there is a problem with the HD. The operation had to stop. This is a new, unformatted, HD. In previous projects, I could go on to partition the HD, and load the OS. I tried again, and had the same outcome. Could it be a bad HD, or is there a way to bypass this stage?

XP is a very old OS, you know. It is almost 10. That is about 175 in human years. It came out long before SATA drives did. It does not natively support them. XP can't be expected to support newer hardware for very much longer, either.

I recently scanned my PC for spyware using Ad-aware, and it found over 60 items (most of them in the registry), which I proceeded to place under quarantine. Then, when I tried to turn off my computer, it froze, and when I restarted it, I was unable to connect to the internet. The computer works fine until any program tries to access the internet, at which time I get an error message saying that the program caused a problem with a file named MSAFD.dll, and it gives me the options of closing it or debugging it (nothing happens when I click on the latter). Here are the details of the message I get when I try to use Internet Explorer:

Hello everyone,

I got my PC around 4 years ago and never had any serious issues until now.

A few days ago, I returned to my PC after a few hours idle time, and was surprised to be greeted by a BSOD. I hoped that it would turn out to be a one time thing, but as a matter of fact I can't even boot windows 7 now without getting aforementioned bluescreen or just a random reboot (mostly right before the password input should appear). Booting in safe mode works, but after some time browsing I encountered the BSOD again. After a little bit of safe mode google research, I'm inclined to think that the problem is probably hardware related, maybe some of you guys could shed some light on how dire the situation really is.

Any help / information is highly appreciated. Also please let me know if you need more information from me to diagnose the issue.

Thanks in advance and have a good day!

A:BSOD at almost every attempt to boot PC, error 0x00000124

Aha as soon as i saw 124, hardware popped in my mind.
Anyhow your probably correct : BUGCHECK_STR: 0x124_Genuine Intel =
Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try
That link provides the most probable solutions to your issue. Anyhow I believe i once had this problem myself on a laptop about 4 years old only mine was AMD. I came to this site, for assistance and was assisted. It encouraged me to learn the ways of BSOD debugging, even though i knew nothing. SO i would like to help you as best as i can!
MY 1st step of advice, is clean out any dust using compressed air or a vacuum cleaning hose(I did it with a vacuum and it worked, but your choice as some say its not safe). Even if there isn't much dust do it anyways it fixed my problem. Second stop overclocking if you have, Then follow other instructions in the link above. As well if the problem is still persisting, you can lower the vcore settings.
Please run the following
Ram : RAM - Test with Memtest86+
General hardware: Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95 ( (Three pre-set configurations are available: Small FFTs and In-place FFTs, and Blend. Small and In-place modes primarily test the FPU and the caches of the CPU, whereas the Blend mode tests everything, including the memory.)
Graphics: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark (Do the above Graphics test only with the latest drivers, and then Run it until the temperatures stop increasing; should be less then 10 minutes. If you don't see any crazy glitches or ... Read more

I have 1 Desktop, 1 Laptop and 1 tablet all running Windows 7 Home Premium and all 3 are wireless. I created a Homegroup on one of the computers. When I went to one of the other computer it would not let me join a workgroup it would only let me create one. So I decided to Map Network Drives. I was able to map all the folders I wanted to share from the desktop to the laptop but when I tried to map drives to the laptop it would keep asking me for a password but the laptop does not have a password. So I tried to map the drives on the tablet but it would not see it. So after just playing around (can?t remember at this time what I did since I did many different things) I was able to get everything mapped with all 3 computers. But then I would go back to one of them and the mapped drives would not work so I would try to remap them and I could not see the other computer. It would work on and off. One minute I could access the files then the next I could not. Does it sound like my router is going bad? But the weird thing if I will lose my lan network (not being able to see other computers) but all computers can still access the internet. Also I disconnect all mapped drives but some won?t let me because it states that the network is not found. How can I remove those drives?

Sorry for such a long post and I hope it makes sense so someone can help.

A:Cant share files

See the following on how to connect and disconnect mapped drives:
How to connect and disconnect a network drive in Windows XP

Do you have passwords on all the PCs? Windows may ask you for a password but if it doesnt have one then it will deny access.
