Q: RealTek AC'97 Audio: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I've seen this issue resolved on here before, and it all seems to balance on a code that is different on all computers. I accidentally uninstalled something when I clicked on the wrong line. I hit cancel as soon as I saw what I did but it was too late. I have no sound on my old POS computer Help tech support guy. Help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey hello everyone, I am new member here. I already checked couple threads with this same title, but I didn't really find any solution.

Here's a thing. Yesterday I went to clean my computer for dust, so I opened case and unplugged all wires. Now everything is backup except there is no sound. In device manager I got that yellow/black '!' next to Realtek AC3'97 Audio. I reinstalled drivers couple times already, but nothing. I mean, I was just cleaning dust...

So I came up with that idea that it might be the problem with the front panel pins, which I probably connected in wrong ways. I don't even know in which way those pins should be facing when connecting. So the motherboard is Asus A8N5X (from 2005, yea old), computer runs on Windows XP SP3. I tried many combinations with those pins, but nothing. I get that yellow/black '!' next to device or I get nothing at all (it won't show the device at all).

I tried reading the manual, but the wire names are different on the actual wires than shown in the manual:

And the names on wires are:

GND (black wire)
GND (black wire)
Mic Bias (yellow)
Mic In (green)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout R (white)
Spkout R (white)

As you can see names duplicates. So I tried various combinations, but nothing. Once looked like I fixed it, after loading Windows up, there was sound icon in the tray, but PC suddenly restarted and next time there was no audio again.

Like I said I unplugged all wires befo... Read more

The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled a couple months ago, and ever since then it hasn't been able to play sound. Under the Device Manager, Realtek AC'97 Audio has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and under its Device Status it reads "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, as well as downloading the most recent driver (the most recent I could find was 4.04), but to no avail. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

OK you probably thought of this first thing but don't laugh when I ask: after the clean install, did your friend run the motherboard disk for his machine? Because the AC97 drivers are on that cd. He should disable it in "devices' and install the driver from the mobo cd and then enable it again and reboot. Should have sound. Only other thing is it could be disabled in the bios - you could check that too.

Hello,

Recently, I installed this Windows XP Professional SP2 on my comp. Once done, I am not been able to install my audio drivers for Realtek High Definition Audio. I couldn't understand what the problem is. Before, they were working fine, now since I had re-installed the Windows again, the whole thing came into being. I had done reinstalling the Windows several times now.

The drivers for the device are installed. But it says the device cannot start.[Code 10].

I had done loads of things, such as :

1. Reinstalling the drivers after uninstalling the same.
2. Rebooting as appropriate.
3. Surf through different sites to check, what best I can do, to tackle the whole thing. But nothing so far.

Hopefully someone be able to tell me, what to do.....

I need my sound back, as my work is completely hung up without it.....

Thankx......

Hi @JS2045 The problem HD audio device you are seeing is the Intel HDMI audio device that needs a driver. I looked around for a W10 driver for the hardware ID you posted, and can't find one. You don't need that device unless you want/need audio through the display port. The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the W7 Intel graphics driver from your notebook's support and driver page, but install it this way...so that you just target the problem audio device... Download, but don't run this graphics driver... http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=4095873&swItemId=ob_127914_1&swEnvOid=4059 Download and install this free file utility.  64 bit is the second file listed. http://www.7-zip.org/ After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file you downloaded, and select 7-zip from the list of items. Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the driver to the folder name (sp64360). Go to the device manager and click on the problem Intel HD audio device needing the driver. Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way. Then reboot. If you explore the driver folder 7-zip created, and open the DisplayAudio folder, you will find the setup informa... My IDT audio works fine and my laptop's sound works fine, but when I hoop up my laptop to my TV through a HDMI cord I get my laptop's video output displayed on my TV but no sound from my laptop is output to my TV. It has a yellow triangle next to it with a ! in the middle of the yellow triangle in device manager under Sound, video, and game controllers. And when I click properties on the High Definition Audio Device, it says, " This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful". Any help would be great. Hi there,

Not a computer expert by any means and would really appreciate your help. I tried to download a 'DVD decoder' that would enable me to watch a DVD that wasn't working on Windows Media the other day. This still didn't work and gave me a far more frustrating problem as well....

The sound has now gone and I have a yellow explanation mark next to my audio device (in device manager) and the device status says 'This device can not start (Code 10)'.

My computer is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Model: T7870
AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHZ
1.00 GB of RAM

I have tried de-installing and re-installing, got rid of any new downloads, checked for Viruses (using Kapersky), checked the wires and done everything on Windows Troubleshooter a number of times!

I saw a few other threads on this and it all resulted in the poster having to buy a new sound card. Mine is built into my system and this all seems quite fiddly and could cause me to do further damage. Has anyone else got any further advice before I go ahead and do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice given. It is much appreciated!

After many many tries and a couple reformats, I've decided to ask for help instead of trying fixes that have yet to work.

I got this laptop about a week ago from Radio Shack. It came with vista preinstalled and had so much stuff I did not want. I wanted XP cause I have had a fair share of experience with both Vista and XP to come to say Vista is a gigantic resource hog. I wanted to go back to XP because I'm an avid gamer and most gamers use XP.

I downgraded and found all the drivers, and my computer flew. EXCEPT, it had no sound.

I've tried drivers for every laptop known to man and have seen many people fix theirs, but to no avail, none have worked.

I've tried the HD hotfix and it is currently installed.

You need to find out the details of your chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge - the Southbridge is, I believe, the critical one re audio.

Then find through Google a mobo that has that sepecific set of chips and try and find XP drivers for that.

After restoring my laptop I now get the following error for "High definition audio device" in device manager: This device cannot start. (Code 10){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful.  First thing I tried was updating all drivers which did not change anything. I then tried reinstalling the driver provided on the hp support site as well as uninstalling through device manager and installing again from the hp support site. I have also tried fully restoring my laptop and reinstalling Windows but this has not solved it. I am not sure if this is an issue from the driver provided online or if it is my laptop. I have tried running the "find and fix audio playback problems" tool which just suggests updating/reinstalling the driver... Windows audio is already started in Services. I have checked for the upper/lower filter entry in regedit, which weren't there. Can anyone help advising what else I can troubleshoot or if there is another site I can use to try download this driver? Thanks in advance.

The Dell driver is required, non Dell drivers will either not work or not work correctly.

First thing, is the Integrated Audio enabled in the BIOS? (F2 at boot up to enter Setup).

Second, on Dell's (and many others) if the motherboard chipset drivers were not installed, the sound device will not work. In this model there are Intel motherboard chipset drivers. Try installing them and then the Dell sound driver. Dell Drivers

What do you show in the Device Manager, Sound section?
Post a Screenshot of that.

Code 10 can be driver or can be some other hardware issue.
In the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the RealTek and then LEFT click "Uninstall" ALSO check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC. If there are no hardware problems or conflicts, when Windows starts it will detect and and install the generic, basic function, "High Definition Audio Codec" for the sound driver. If this is installed, check to see if you have sound, and if the Speakers (High Definiton Audio Codec) is set as the default Audio playback device in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound, Playback section.

If this works, you can consider reinstalling the RealTek drivers. Where did you get the drivers you have now?

Hello everyone,

Havent been here in a while so sorry if im doing something wrong, well my problem is with a Toshiba Satellite L505D-LS5005 after having an issue with freezing at start up I ran several antivirus and spyware scans and all came up negative but the freezing continued so I then was able to go into safe mode and do an MSconfig and unchecked everything booting up. That took care of the problem with the freezing and I was able to uninstall Norton and McAfee which I believe was the problem. Soon after getting things back to normal I noticed that the audio drivers weren't working. This computer has the "High Definition Audio drivers" but it has "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" status on the drivers. I have tried the following solutions with out results:

Uninstalled drivers from the device manager and reinstalled them using the drivers from the Official Toshiba Website. After installing I restart but still no audio and the same "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" message on the status

I have also tried uninstalling all Realtek drivers such as Ethernet controller and Wireless device controller and done one by one. All other devices install and work after installation except the audio drivers.

I have also gone to Add or remove programs and uninstalled the Realtek audio drivers and reinstalled the drivers from realtek.com and still ... Read more

I'm running windows 10 on an HP Omen and after most recent windows update, my computers internal speakers are unavailable, as are any wired connected audio devices. Sound icon says no speakers or headphones are plugged in. Device manager, under sound, video, and game controllers does not show realtek HD audio. This only appears when I go to view and select show hidden devices. Then, under properties, I can see Code 45 (hardware device not connected. To fix, reconnect). I have attempted driver fixes including driver version 6.0.1.8591. Troubleshooters for audio detected nothing. I have tried rolling back the windows update.

I cannot find any sites that recommend steps beyond checking driver for the device. I've also tried calling HP tech support twice, and both times representatives told me they needed more time to find a solution (which they have failed to do).

Anyone who has dealt with this issue or has thoughts, any advice appreciated.

I encountered some sound problem and then I uninstall the Realtek HD Audio from Add/Remove Programs. It requires to restart the computer so I restart my computer. After that I can't install again the driver & the program. BTW, I have Windows XP SP3 in my computer.

A:Realtek HD Audio device

It's a version mismatch in the driver.
A hotfix specific to Sp3, for the HD Audio driver, will be made available after XP SP3 releases.

Hey guys! This is my first post and I hope I can get some help!
A few days ago, I set up my desktop and installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro. Of course, I had to get all my drivers manually, and I did. Everything was all fine and dandy until I realised that I had no sound. so searching I went until I found the driver I needed: Realtek AC'97 Audio. So I restarted and figured I would have sound. That was not the case. So I went into Device Manager and found a black exclaimation mark in a yellow bubble on my sound driver. I right-clicked it and went to "Properties". In the text box it said: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"! I cannot seem to fix this issue! I went to RealTek and downloaded them. I went to Asus but could not find the drivers for my model (I am not 100% certain but I think I have a Pundit-S)

A:change audio device from realtek

If you have a RealTek hardware sound chip, you must use the RealTek drivers, whether they say provided by RealTek or provided by, for example Microsoft.

You may want to post this question on the gaming section, include the game or games you are having problems with.

Hello,

first I already wanna thank everybody who replies to this and try to help me. Yesterday morning I tried to download a sound driver that would make the Stereo Mix option available. It was not from the original website of Realtek or HP. It was from here: http://driveragent.com/c/archive/196a161c/Realtek-High-Definition-audio#summary. After I finished the installation and restarted my PC there was a red cross next to the sound icon and when I tried to open volumemixer it said 'No audio output device installed'. I tried to uninstall it with system restore. Than I also tried to install the latest sound drivers from the Realtek and HP site but both didn't work. Also I saw on another topic that maybe some services were stopped but that wasn't. Now I really don't know what to do. Hope someone can help me.

Hey there,
Can someone help me? I've been trying to work this out 4 weeks.

I can hear audio playing through winamp/media player and basically any program thats on my computer (XP). But I cant hear anything that plays through flash online eg. myspace audio and youtube etc etc.
But I can listen to online radio through Real audio etc.
This is a real prob for me cos I work in the music industry and have to keep up with the latest music from bands.
Everything was working fine until about 10 days ago when it stopped without explanation (that I can fathom).
It's very strange cos when I go into control panel, it says there is no audio device. But how can this be? I can still hear music from my harddrive.

What I've done: Uninstalled/ reinstalled Flash, also the Realtek drivers...

Where is starts to get wierd:
I thought i fixed my problem the other night. All of a sudden it recognised Realtek as the audio device and I could listen to everything online- so happy! But i had no explanation of why it started working again.

Then the next day:
No device recognised! Ahhh!
After several restarts I found that some times control panel says there was an audio device (realtek 97) and more often it says there is nothing.
I have a suspicion it could be cos there's other hardware Unimodem half duplex installed on the computer.. but am not sure what to do about this. I tried disabling it, but then nothing at all would play- not even through winamp etc.

A:Realtek AC'97- No audio device recognised

On-board audio, Realtek codec drivers and such can be very dodgey and problematic. Even when all things are working perfectly, these still utilize a big portion of CPU resources just for basic operation. In all, integrated audio is a good cheap alternative for Grandma's "You got mail!" when she signs into AOL, but for most everyone else, it's not the best solution.

While not the answer you want to hear, you're likely going to save yourself hours of grief, diagnostics and driver download/installs by simply buying a cheap, well supported, true sound card.

If you're in the US, my best cheapest solution is to just go to Walmart and buy one of their Audigy SE's. These are around $30 bucks US, they usually have a ton of them. You just disable your current on-board audio in the BIOS, power off, slap the card into an open PCI slot in the case, close the case, power-up, install the drivers off the included CD and you're in business.

Above all, you get up to 64 voices in hardware, spares your CPU so the rest of your system runs fast, EAX support for surround 5.1/7.1 speakers, CMS3D for expansion of 2 speakers/headphones, tons of nice EQ features and handy EQ presets, sound environment settings, clean 96khz, 24-bit hardware audio quality, etc.etc. Not to mention you can hit Creative's website and they have an auto-updater (for IE5.0 and above) that works like Windows Update.. takes all the pain out of keeping your drivers and so... Recently I had some computer issues and had to take apart my PC and refit it back. Everything is fine now but I just realised that my Nvidia GPU is being used as the HD audio device. Audio plugs are all in the motherboard jacks and not in the gpu, my gpu dosent have any audio jacks anyway.

I didnt even realise the issue until recently when I tried to record some gameplay footage and found my recording to have screwy audio. Everything else seems to be fine as far as sound is concerned. I need to know how I can go back removing my GPU as the audio device and re-enabling Realtek. Right now I have no realtek device manager in my control panel or my programs list.

I wasnt sure if it was as simple as re-installing the drivers and rebooting the PC and I've had some major issues with drivers in the past so Im wary of trying to fix the problem on my own.

My motherboard is: Biostar TP67xe
GPU is: Nvidia gtx 570
running on win 7 home 64bit

A:Realtek AC'97 audio controller not working -- error (code 10)

Apart from the audio driver, it is critical to have the right chipset driver installed. The VIA southbridge needs to work properly to interface with the vinyl audio processor.
So try installing the chipset driver first, and then the audio driver. And of course make sure all MS updates are installed, including the MS UAA driver.

No sound?

Try the simple things first. Speakers on and working? Plug them into a MP3 player, test that they actually amplify. Speaker plug in the correct socket in the PC? ( I mean not the Mic socket?) Have you looked in 'Device Manager' for a yellow warning by the entry for your sound option? Assume you know all the above, it's most likely still to be the wrong drivers. Go into 'Device Manager' and uninstall any sound drivers. Then go to www.drivereasy.com and download their free program, scan your PC and you will get the right driver I would think. You might also find a few other drivers out of date too. And NO it doesn't cost you to use that program. Hope this helps.

Hey! First things first, I'm running an Aspire V3-772g laptop. After the recent Windows 10 update, I was having issues getting past the lock screen (took AGES to get to the point where I could input my password) and it had been a while, so I reformatted ('reset my PC' deleting all files) - this actually didn't solve my problem, so I used Rufus with a Windows 10 iso from Microsoft to delete all partitions and REALLY start fresh. Ever since, the laptop is running like a dream--in all but one respect. It seems like no matter WHAT I do, I CANNOT get my HDMI audio / TV to appear as an option in Playback Devices (yes, disabled devices is ticked). Looking in Device Manager, the High Definition Audio Device has an exclamation mark is throwing a code 10 - device unable to start. I've tried uninstalling it, tried installing all drivers from Intel's V3-772g page including chipset, updated my graphics driver / Realtek / Intel HD audio drivers... and yet, nothing. Ran /sfc, ran /chkdsk, nothing. I read something that led me to believe .NET framework might be part of the issue--and I did actually have quite a bit of difficulty getting 3.5 installed / functional, but I finally did...... and still, nothing!! I'm seriously losing my mind. I'm having to run my surround sound through an auxiliary cable into the laptop, which is just sacrilege and a fraction of the quality. If there is ANYTHING, ANYONE can suggest beyond the above, please do!!

I have a PC built from an Asus P5B-WiFi Delux motherboard running Windows 8 Pro with Classic Shell which has an Realtek HD audio on board sound device. I also have a Creative X-Fi Gamer sound card installed. All of these were installed and working correctly.

One time I unplugged my speakers and when I plugged them back in again the sound was being played back on the Realtek headphone device. I couldn't find anyway to get it to play back on the Realtek speakers so I disabled the headphone device. Now I can't find the headphone device anywhere. Since rebooting the sound is coming out of the speakers device so that is OK but I'm still wondering where my headphone device has gone.

I will try re-installing the Realtek drivers but I'd like to know what happened.

I'm using a windows 8 pavilion g7 laptop. Long story short, I wanted to have realtek HD audio on my computer mainly for the cool audio effects that come with it because the audio drivers that came with my computer don't have those effects. Nonetheless, I installed realtek HD audio hoping it would install and i could simply change the audio settings to use realtek instead of the ones on my computer. once the installation was complete and after i rebooted and everything, I couldn't find the driver for realtek. So i went into sound, video, and game controllers under device manager and didn't find the realtek driver listed. only the two audio drivers that came with my computer. The two audio drivers that came with my computer are as follows: AMD high definition audio device and IDT high definition audio device CODEC. I tried to uninstall them and just reboot but my computer ended up automatically reinstalling those devices anyway. I don't get it. It's like my computer can't recognize the realtek driver or something. At this point I'm not even sure if my computer will allow that kind of audio device. PLEASE HELP!

A:Realtek HD audio not showing up in device manager

You list IDT High Definition Audio. This is your PC's sound "card". You can't install RealTek as there is no RealTek audio chip. You can ONLY use IDT drivers, and the Vendor (HP) supplied drivers are the preferred.

This is for a friend of mine. The computer says that there is not sound driver and has this button because there's no sound. I don't know much of his computer but whenever we try to download and install the realtek high definition audio driver, it installs succesfully, asks us to restart and when it loads it STILL says that there are no drivers for sound. He said he installed a genuine windows a few minutes ago and asked me to come to his house and fix it. He hasn't installed any windows updates yet. All I know is that he has an AMD Seprom 2500+ 1.7GHz 512MB ram and that's it. Anybody know WHICH version of Realtek should we install?

A:Realtek HD Audio Device intalled. Still not working?

First thing is are you sure the motherboard has Realtek for the audio? Also the HD or AC'97 driver, as with it having an old Sempron in it is possible that it uses the older AC'97 driver.

Need to double check the model number of the motherboard to see what it has.

Hope someone can help me out with my audio problems...

I have an ASUS A54C laptop less than a month old.
-Windows 7, service pack 1.
64 bit.

About a week ago Asus live update automatically installed some updates (I didn't realise I could disable auto update, still getting used to this laptop)
when it restarted a few errors kept popping up and the webcam was not working. After googling I came across forum posts saying you have to manually download the drivers from the website. After doing that the webcam software showed a message "no audio device found" I thought ok, no problem I'll just re-install the audio driver (I had done this a few weeks previously because the built in mic was acting up).

The first half of installation completed, laptop restarted but then gave me the following error when trying to complete the second half:

Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !!
[Error Code: 0x00000002]

Things I've already tried:
-I have tried several times to install the audio driver
-Tried installing different versions
- downloading directly from realtek
-System restore a couple times but it failed.
-Updated the BIOS (although I have no idea what this actually does)

I don't know what else to do.
Please help!
