How to get rid of Chromium in Windows 10

Q: How to get rid of Chromium in Windows 10

In an attempt to get rid of Chromium in a Laptop Windows 10, I got a virus that referenced a BSOD error number, which I don't have right now, but it put about 12 entries of Chromium 32 in the Task Manager listings. After searching the web with my computer I found out how to get rid of the virus warning and all is fine for now. So now I am still stuck trying to figure out a way to delete this Chromium program. It seems to always come on after Windows boots up. Cannot find where the main file or execute file is located in the file system. Any comments or help will be appreciated.
Note: Chromium is not listed in the files that are installed so you cannot use an uninstaller to delete it.

Preferred Solution: How to get rid of Chromium in Windows 10

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

At my last check Chromium had to be compiled from source for Windows with the instructions specifically using Visual Studio to do so. I was wondering if anyone here has done so, and if so what the results were like? I really like Google Chrome but I had a discussion about SE Linux alerts and Google Chrome the other day. It mainly was about Chrome's constant contact with the mothership, and how that surprisingly it is not prompting more of these SE Linux alerts. That has got me thinking about using Chromium instead. I am assuming Chromium's OSS nature probably lends superior respect for privacy versus Chrome. Any info on compiling Chromium for Windows or thoughts about privacy issues concerning the use of either would be greatly appreciated. However, please do not post about alternatives such as SRWare's Iron here. I am fully aware of those alternatives and I am not interested in them.

I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong area, or if it's a duplicate.
I have a Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 Laptop. Service Tag is <Deleted due to privacy policy>. It has the Windows 8 sticker on the back, but the Dell site has Windows 10 Home listed as the OS.
I bought this used, and the previous owner installed CloudReady + Chromium OS.
He no longer knows his CloudReady credentials, and he doesn't have the original product key because the Windows was an OEM install.
CloudReady won't allow me to factory reset it, and I don't know if that would help anyway.
I need Windows. I'm also beyond financially challenged, so the cheapest way possible is what I need. But I also can't screw up this machine, because I can't afford another one.
So...can someone tell me what my options are? I don't know what OS this laptop can run. Can it do Win 7? Should I buy Win 8? Can I install a new OS from a usb stick?
I know just enough about computers to be dangerous, but definitely not enough about this. I would so greatly appreciate any help I can get. Neverware, the company behind CloudReady isn't interested  in helping me, and I'm just really hoping someone here IS.

A:Help to get rid of CloudReady+Chromium, and get Windows OS.

Hi,Welcome to our community. Since the previous owner had installed Chromium OS and also had created credentials for cloud and if you do not want to use the same, you might have to reinstall the Operating system after wiping out the existing one.If you have a Windows 7 retail copy and the product key, you may go ahead and install the OS. If you have Windows 8 media, you can go ahead and install the OS and the product key is embedded in the Motherboard. If you don’t have either of the above mentioned options. You may consider contacting the Out of Warranty team and purchasing an OS media. You can contact them at 1800-288-4410. Please write to us if you face any concerns.

Hey there, as most of you know Chrome doesn't work directly on windows 7 64bit.

There is however a fix out: And thats editing your shortcut to include: --in-process-plugins

The proble with this however is that when I want to open a link from my mail or any other im client of some sort. It will offcourse start it without that line.

My question is: Is there any workaround to make chrome start with --in-process-plugins in any given situation. Maybe someone can edit the source and rebuild it. Or I was thinking of copying the exe file and making the standard .exe file being some sort of shortcut to the copied one with the commandline.

Any ideas?

I have an unused Dell Dimension E521 Product Support | Dell US with Windows XP. I added memory for a total of 3.5 GB of RAM, anything else is stock.

I am thinking of upgrading the machine to Windows 8.1 or downgrading it to Chromium OS.

Option #1: Upgrading the machine to Windows 8.1. I happen to already have the DVDs & retail product key, so there is no $ expense for me going this way. Dell has only drivers available up to Windows Vista, but I believe the machine will work for basic functions such as web, MS Office including Outlook, and printing. I don't plan to do much else with the machine. Windows 8.1 comes with Windows Defender for basic security.

Option #2: Downgrading the machine to Chromium OS. I have been looking at CloudReady?s free offering for individuals Neverware It is basically Google Chrome OS with a few differences. It is basically a secure OS, but CloudReady strongly recommends a BIOS password, and I am not sure if the motherboard supports that. Web is no problem. I would have to work with Google apps for MS Office files, except for web email rather than Outlook. Printing via the Cloud should work.

I am on the fence which way to go (option #1 or #2) and I would appreciate comments, thanks!

A:Upgrading to Windows 8.1 or downgrading to Chromium OS?

Welcome to the forum. The specs can differ for the pc but it should run win8 ok and even windows 10 which you would get for free. If you installed 8 it would give you the option for win10 and test to see its ok. I have upgraded one of these to win 10 with no problems you need the 32 bit as the max ram is 4 gig so there is no point in getting the 64 bit system.

You do have other option like any linux version would run ok and give more functions than Neverware

I've been using Windows 8 since the Developer preview and I've had no problems with it until now.

I recently got fed up with Firefox (for being too slow, and buggy). so I installed Chromium (not chrome. Chromium, the open source version of Google chrome without that spyware Google puts in it's browser)

But I have a big problem with it - I can't set it as my default browser. If I go to the settings and and click the big button that says "Make Chromium your default browser" all I get is this.
>> Quick translation in English>>

How would you like to open this type of a link (http)?
Keep using: Nightly
Internet Exploder
Find apps from the store

I've seen many tutorials about adding default software, but for some reason chromium isn't listed in the "default apps" section of control panel.

Is there a way to navigate to a certain .exe to add it as a default?

See this post of mine, especially the last two links. The whole thread is about a similar problem, actually.

Not sure where it came from but Google Chromium appeared on my laptop with a pinned icon on the taskbar and apparently set to autostart at Windows startup.

Getting rid of the pinned icon was easy (right click icon and select "unpin this program from taskbar"). Getting Chromium to stop starting itself ... no so much.

Firstly, I will say that the easiest way to achieve this is to merely go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall the program. I felt that I might want the browser at some point, but on my own timing. I chose not to do a full uninstall.

Next I opened Chromium and went to settings ... even advanced settings. There were none to disable autostart. I have had a Windows based computer since Windows 3.1 and some of the old tools still work wonders.

Took out the Big Guns ... System Configuration, formerly known as "configsys".

Go to the Windows Search box (click the windows start button and there is a blank field at the bottom of the program list). Type "System Configuration". Once that opens, it includes a tab called "Startup" which lists the programs that are to start with Windows.

Find "Chromium" in the list and unchecked it. System message that restart is needed to complete the task. Ensure all windows are closed and hit RESTART.

All done. Back in the driver's seat with my/Your computer!

A:Chromium and XP with SP3

By Chromium you mean Google Chrome? Maybe that's why you can't find it in the Registry?
You should not remove a program by manually deleting it, you need to use it's uninstaller. Try using the free Revo Uninstaller, be sure to use the Advanced method to remove all remnants from the Registry.

Hello, from a first-time poster.

A member of my family whom I will leave unnamed recently updated a program on his laptop, and when he did so a bunch of other programs installed onto the machine as well. After this update, said family member let me know that something was popping up saying he had such-and-such number of viruses on the computer. I knew this itself may be a virus, so I checked the installed programs and found five additional applications he did not intend to install. I used the Uninstall Program window to get rid of all those things, but upon reboot Chromium still starts up (I should have made a list of the names of the other ones before I tried to uninstall). It is no longer showing up on the Uninstall Programs menu, but it is still on the start menu. I have tried Malwarebytes and Malwarebytes Rootkit, but to no avail. Then I found this forum. I am attaching the FRST files that your instructions as for. I hope you can help us fix this laptop. Thanks in advance.

I'm running a chromium 21.x snap shot. Every time I try to update to one of the new 22.x snap shots, I lose all favicons. Seems to be a recurring problem with chrome browser. The snap shots have been 22.x for awhile now. I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this issue.

Even running Bookmark Sentry to manually load all my bookmarks to check they exist does not refresh the favicons. While the extension is running I can see favicons showing up in the bookmarks. But as soon as I close the browser and open it again, they are all gone.

Really weird.

I did notice a mention of a chrome extension named Bookmarks Favicon Fixer. But all searches end up pointing to dead links.

edit: I filed it as an issue on chromium bug tracker. See what happens.

A:chromium 22.x no favicons

What'd you expect? It's obviously a beta/alpha build, which means that every build might also have a regression over the previous. You might want to make things easy on you by just going for stability and leaving the newest test builds alone.

It's also very likely that this doesn't occur on every system running that 22.x build. You did the right thing by filing a bug report. The next build might not contain this bug, thanks to you!

The final version of the all-new Opera browser hit Windows and Mac computers today with a fresh look and completely new features.

Dubbed Opera Next 15, the system swapped out its own Presto rendering engine for Google's Chromium engine, in an effort to help webpages load faster "even in the toughest of network conditions," the Norway-based browser maker said recently.

It sports a sleeker, more modern look, as well as the ability to search directly from a newly combined address-and-search bar ? just start typing a webpage address or enter a search term to look for suggestions.

The refreshed shortcuts feature known as Speed Dial now allows bookmarks to be gathered in folders and easily filtered; simply drag and drop one entry on top of another to create a folder, or use the new search field to find a specific page you once saved.
