sfc cannot repair sidebar.ini - hash error

Q: sfc cannot repair sidebar.ini - hash error

I found loads of junk and useless info on this topic, then came across this link:

KBAlertz.com: The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

I post this so others don't waste a bunch of time on this. I even deleted and recreated the file before finding this info. Waste of time. Thanks, Microsoft.

Here is the gist of it.

You use the System Preparation (Sysprep) tool and an Autounattend.xml file to add a custom gadget to the Windows Sidebar in Windows Vista. When you run the SFC.exe /scannow command or the SFC.exe /verifyonly command, you receive error messages in the CBS.log file. Back to the top

This problem occurs because the SFC.exe command falsely reports the Settings.ini file information in the CBS.log file.Back to the top

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.Back to the top

You can safely ignore the error messages in the CBS.log file. The SFC.exe command falsely reports the Settings.ini file information in the CBS.log file.

You may receive error messages that resemble the following in the CBS.log file.

Note The CBS.log file is located in the %SystemRoot%\Logs\CBS folder.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OMG, I have so many questions that are killing me! and mostly they are related to mp3's! Please answer these if you have enough knowledge!

1. If I download music (by payment) on the internet, can I choose which format/bitrate I want it in? And can I choose lossless .wav format? I don't buy music online.

2. What are these numbers followed by the word Hash? What are these things?

3. What are these things - when I check the properties of an mp3 in it's comments/description tag, I often see numbers and letters in groups like this: http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1835/commentsordescriptionxx6.jpg

Hi everyone,
I am experiencing an error with the Sidebar and no matter what I do, it doesn't fix the problem! I've tried everything that I could find within forums and it keeps coming up with the same error.
I am running Vista Home Basic and everytime I start up Windows, the Sidebar would load, and half way through loading, an error message pops up saying:

"Windows Sidebar has stopped working...
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem"

The same thing happens when I try opening up the Sidebar again. The Sidebar icon would show up in the taskbar but when I run my mouse over it, it just disappears.

Does anyone know what to do?

Hello Billy,

There must have been a time when it worked. You have to back track all your actions (things installed, settings changes etc)

Something has mucked things up for you and only a process of elimination will pin point the problem so we can correct it

First try this, System Files - SFC Command

You could make a new account for yourself

If it started just a short time ago, just do a system restore. Your personal documents, etc, will not be touched

Type this in search, cmd (do not hit enter) right click and run as administrator.

Does this only happen when you want to use the sidebar? In that case try to do a repair with sfc /scannow and have your XP pro disc ready since it will need to copy those files from the disc. Here is an excellent tutorial on that subject.

The copied gadgets includes some that have already installed when Windows is set up(Slideshow, Clock...)
Windows asked me if i want to replace the file by the new one. But it warn me that the file need a administrator permission and refuse to replace it.
But when i finish my copy. The ORIginal gadget of the Sidebar have some problem that they can not normally show. They just become some back and white area with nothing on it.
I try to go to the safety mode to delete the ORIginal gadget and replace it by the new one. But it warn me again that the file need a administrator permission.

The attachment show the sidebar
I add the Clock, Slideshow, Puzzle....and they all can not work

A:Vista Sidebar gadget error

It seems as though by trying to add the new ones, it partially wrote over the existing ones, causing everything to quit working. I would try seeing if you can add a separate gadget and maybe it'll work for you. When you try and copy new ones, just go w/ whatever UAC is asking and it'll work properly.

So, I run Vista and at the moment I have both the sidebars installed...

I am not particularly bothered in which of the two to keep but I really don't want both..
I like the google gadget but on the other hand I like the "feel" of the Vista sidebar because it i) autohides ii)doesn't take desktop space, hence can keep icons "behind it" iii) more gadgets iv) transparent

My question is this..
1. if I were to only keep the google one is there any way to keep the vista sidebar effects?
2. if I keep the vista one can i miggrate the google apps there? (such as google talk, scratch pad and search????)

(btw, if I use the "autohide" option in the google sidebar I am faced with 2 problems, 1. I use 2 monitors so if I want to bring it to front I need be veeeery careful in my mouse positioning and 2. still takes up desktop space...)

Very confused here...
Let me know if I dont make sense and I'll try to clarify,
Thanks for the help

A:Google sidebar vs Vista sidebar

I seriously doubt you can migrate Google apps to the Vista sidebar. Many people are generating gadgets for the Vista toolbar, so maybe some of the functionality you want will show up.

Your images didn't show, but did you install the program from a location on your computer? If so, you may be suffering from trying to uninstall Norton, which is notorious for uninstall problems.
Try this:

Uninstall Kaspersky.

Download and Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here:

Reinstall Kaspersky.

If that doesn't work, get the Norton Uninstaller here:

Internet Explorer 9 RTM: Logon, Desktop Sidebar & Windows Live Sign in Assitant Issues

Hi Guys, guess no one acknowledge these problems in the early stage.

I came across with a few issues after installing the Internet Explorer (IE9 RTM) which currently known as the final version of IE9.

OS Platform: Windows 7 sp1 RTM
Browser: Internet Explorer 9 RTM (Version 9.0.8112.16421)

1) Error on Logon: After I log off my computer (pressed the log off button) and re-logon back, parts of the Windows Live Sign In Assistant were disabled (with an error message box). ~view snapshot 1

2) Desktop Sidebar issue: Some of the gadgets are not working properly or not fully functioning. Examples; usage gauge in O&O DiskStat is not working but the hard disk space gauge is working; Microsoft Blue Calendar is displaying with a white frame. Both gadgets had no such a problem previously.

3) Related with issues 1 and 2 above: When I disabled the Desktop Sidebar in Control Panel, restarted my pc. When the Windows started, parts of the Windows Live Sign In Assistant were disabled (with an error message box) which was the same error with issue 1 above and had the same error message box.

Note that, before I disabled the Desktop Sidebar, there was no error on starting the windows, but there was still an error on logon the Windows after pressing the log off button only, the rest were all fine.

Shapshot 1:

I am certain that my Windows Live Sign In Assitant and Desktop Gadget... Read more

Have you seen this: Internet Explorer 9 - Uninstall ?

Also note "Make sure you revert any/all customizations made to Internet Explorer 9 prior to uninstalling it to prevent any issues from occuring." (Tools/Internet Options/Advanced Reset)

Note that this is an "Uninstall" not a "System Restore" so I suspect your lack of restore points may not matter.

If you can get back to IE8, I'd use it for a while as a test of SP1. And you may want to check this out before installing IE9: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/ff959805.aspx

I bought a brand new X1 Extreme directly from Lenovo, delivered a few months ago (Dec 2018).I initially got a 'single fan error' very rarely.A few days ago I updated the Thermal driver and, perhaps coincidentally, started getting single fan error on every restart. I did a system restore, but not sure it rolled back the Thermal driver. Today I updated the BIOS hoping this might somehow help.Interestingly, the 'single fan error' (which shows up at boot time before Windows loads) happens on every Windows 10 'restart'; however the 'single fan error' does not happen if I perform a Windows 'shutdown' and then start the laptop manually (using power button). Given it is not consistent is this always a hardware issue or could it be some type of driver / setting issue? Is there an easy way to check the dual fan operation is working, using system info or another utility / app?I don't want to have to send the whle laptop in for repair if not a hardware issue and I use my laptop daily. If it does turn out to be a hardware issue, can Lenovo send a new fan so i can install it myself?

A:3 month old X1 Extreme with 'Single fan error' - Repair required? 'Carry in' or 'send in for repair?

I updated everything (latest BIOS and drivers) and it is still occurring, so it appears to be a hardware issue.Disappointed since this laptop is only 3 months old! Never had a fan go on a computer, let alone one that is only 3 months old. Guess I need to send my laptop in for repair, unless there is a local service provider I can take it to for the fan repair / replacement? Any recommendations on best option to handle this?Based on others' experiences here, what is the approximate repair turnaround time for something like a fan replacement / fan repair? https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/contactus Thanks for any guidance!

then goes back to the first message and tries again...
Roxio 7 still works perfectly fine when I open it from desktop or start!

I encountered the same problem awhile back; it's a known bug with the Windows Installer.
MOPER made this suggestion & it worked perfectly for me. Give it a try..

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.

Install and run it, look for an entry similar to "WordPerfect". Delete the entry and all should be fine.

Whatever you're posting upstairs, it most definitely is NOT the MS DL, NOR the Zuko numbers.

It sounds like you created a "hash" from the single file 'install.wim' (maybe from Zukona) and you're comparing those numbers with the full DL .iso files....

You gotta go back to square-one and decide which numbers you're posting, and what they are for...

These are the numbers you need:

My AVG free takes almost 2 hrs to run so I'd like to download the new version hoping it'll be faster. The explanation tells me to check the MD5 hash value and I found a download to do this. But I"m not sure what I'm doing. It says to download digestIT 2004 and then calculate the hash value. I'm not sure how to do that and where tofind this info. Shd I be doing this on every download? I've never heard of it but it sounds like a good thing. Any advice?

A:How to check MD5 hash value

First, download the MD5 Program (very small download, and it is zipped so you will have to extract the executable from this download). Put it some place easy like "C:\"

Open the command prompt by pressing the Windows key + R (or start > run) and type cmd in the prompt that loads.

In the command prompt window type something similar to below (what you type will depend on where your download is, and where you have stored the md5 executable)

First, change directory to whatever directory you put the md5 exe in (e.g. cd c:\ if you put it where I suggested)

Second, run it by typing md5sums "c:\whatever\directory\your\download-is-in.exe" It will process the command it give you a long string of letters and numbers which should match the one the download had on it's site.

All this will do, is tell you if your download completed successfully, or if it is corrupt.

I used to be able to access the "Repair your Computer" option when I booted up the install and repair disc (that I originally downloaded from digitalriver since I have an OEM installed version of Windows), but now I get the following error message:

"System Recovery options
This version of system recovery options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows".

I've read another post that says the issue may be the Service Pack 1 download:

"I have heard some people mention that you cannot use the original DVD to recover once "Service Pack 1" is installed but I never tried it for myself. So it is plausible that this is your issue; you may have upgraded to W7 SP1 (part of Windows automatic updates) and the disks were created when you were just W7."

This is the only explanation I can find for my situation.

Has anyone experienced this problem and what is the solution?

I am trying to access the "repair your computer" option to restore a System Image from a backup on an external hard drive because I want to test that it works before I have to use it for real. How ironic that I can't even get access to the option to restore a system image....

Any/all help appreciated.

A:Error message when trying to use "Repair your Computer" on repair disc

My understanding is, if your system has SP-1 installed your Repair Disc must also have SP-1.

If your Image doesn't have SP-1 I suggest making a new Image that includes SP-1.

Hi and welcome to TSF try

Method 1:

Perform a clean boot.
Note: If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps. It is strongly recommend that you do not use the System Configuration utility to modify the advanced boot options on the computer unless a Microsoft support engineer directs you to do this. Doing this may make the computer unusable. 1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
2. Click Start, type "msconfig" in the Start Search box or Run command, and then press enter to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
Note Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

Now what the heck does that mean anyhow? Is this a firefoax only kind of error? I cannot install any extensions or themes like I could once before. I googled the Invalid File Hash and it took me to firefox forum where no one is getting an answer. I just want to fix this.

What does it mean and how to fix it?

A:Invalid File Hash

Shot in the dark and assuming you are using xp, how about using a restore point before this started to happen?

hey there, so basically ill get straight down to it,

my little bit of code is to move the ASCII value of my password 3 to the left, (my first attempt at encryption)

well, at least I thought something like this would work:
For p = 1 To 5
For i = 1 To Len(password1)
password1 = Chr(Asc(Mid(password1, i, 1)) + 3)
Next i
Next p
but it doesn't

can u give me some ideas... advice.. guidance, anything that can help me out

I don't know much about vb.net so plz keep ur code snippets easy for me

thx a lot

Although I'm not familiar with the particular language you're writing in, I've debugged lots of similar problems simply by inserting some code to "audit" whatever's going on. For instance, at each step of the above, display or (preferably) print out:
p= (value of p)
i= (value of i)
password1= (value)
Mid(password1, i, 1)= (value)
Asc(Mid(password1, i, 1))= (value)
Chr(Asc(Mid(password1, i, 1)) + 3)= (value)

I suspect that your code, as written, is replacing the string password1 with the single character Chr(Asc(Mid(password1, i, 1)) + 3) -- which, after the first such replacement, would presumably be null for any i > 1. An audit run like the above would tell you if that's the case or not.

Try leaving password1 unchanged while you store your new result in something like password2.

Hi team, really hope someone can help. I realised i was in a bit of strif with some evil yucky stuff making my computer do some really odd things. Sadly i did what any niave unskilled computer person does and takes it to two mates that are self professed gurus. (Mistake No1) Mistake number two is that i am now home after 10hours of saying i think we should stop now, and not actually getting either to actually stop! initially i found i had malware and i was getting mixxed results from virus and malware removers. Now, not only do i have a lot less programs but i now no longer have access to the internet as it is telling me "windows couldnt automaticly bind the IP protocol to the network adaptor" and ii still have trojans and the four apocolyse at my door! sadly the laptop i have did not come with any disks as the software was already bundled on the system. I tried doing restores up to the point it told me that there were none! in a fit of dispear i fired up the old aspire and have managed to find this website and copy across some programs that may be able to shed some light on what if anything can be done to save my laptop.  Please note that the programs i was able to copy across were not able to update online so the results (Mbar-log is out of date) may not be great  Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.99.72  Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 (UAC is enabled)  Internet Explorer 10 ``````````... Hash applications are a lot of personal preference, like wall paper. So you're liable to get 20 different suggestions. That being said I prefer HashTools by binaryfortress.http://www.binaryfortress.com/hashtools/

I use Netscape Navigator 4.78 from time to time and recently noticed a goodly amount of "hash" files in the program folder. There are 545 files numbered in hex as hash255025 - hashd69855. Each of these files is 61 Kb in size and a hex edit reveals maybe they are involved in certificate ID or maybe security? Are these for SSI or CGI use? I have moved them out of the program folder into a holding folder and see no degredation in performance, but I am not much of a Netscape user so perhaps I missed something.

Does anyone know the reason for these files?
I am running Win98 with a P III.

A:Hash files in Netscape 4.78

I don't know anything about "Hash" files, but I did find the following here. I hope it helps.
Why do I have hash files all over my desktop?
A bug in earlier versions of Netscape (mainly 4.0x) causes it to 'dump' the contents of its security database. When Windows finds these files, it stores them as hash files on your desktop. You may see the name "Thawte" because this database contains the Thawte CA root keys. The solution is to install a newer version. You can then delete the hash files, which should not reappear.

Hi I have an HP ZE4600 which I tried to clear the password in the BIOS by entering the original password then the enter key 2 times over the new password blanks. The next boot it asked for a password and my old password didn't work! Nothing works! There must be a bug in this BIOS!! Now I get a hash code of 12152

I tried to contact to contact HP. I talked to 5 technicians over several hours, some of which were "2nd level" support technicians. I tried to tell them that I have a hash code, none knew what that was at all! I told them i understand I just need to provide proof of ownership (which I was ready and willing to do) and a Hash Code, they said they never heard of this method and I must send it in to a service center.

All of them told me to remove the CMOS battery. I insisted that won't work in a laptop, and they insisted it would work (They all insisted!). One of them even sent me a manual to disassemble my laptop! This model requires complete disassembly and removal of the mainboard to get to the CMOS battery (it's located on the bottom side of the motherboard and there are no openings in the casing so you have to completely remove the motherboard). This is crazy advice to give to an average home user!

I knew this wouldn't work, but since 5 HP technicians told me it would, so I tried it. (I'm pretty technical and not afraid!) Completely disassembled the laptop, removed the mainboard. Left the battery out for a full da... Read more

A:HP Support does not know what Hash Code is?

Send it back to HP and ask them to fix it for a fee.

Hash code is not yet common terminology in the computer world... and all dial up techs in foreign countries are prevented from password fix training online.

Vista 64. Just a quick question on this. I've been seeing this error in my event viewer for a few days. My system boots fine, but I'm still seeing this. Should I be worried about it? I ran a SFC scan, but I still get this in event viewer. Nothing is showing up in my reg cleaner or anything else. System is now clean of spyware and viruses.

Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

File Name: \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Windows\System32\wininet.dll

I don't have a Vista disc to repair from, just restore on a different drive on my system. Should I even do anything about this error?

A:Wininet.dll Invalid Hash

If you are not having problems, there is no need for concern. That DLL helps with the internet. If you are working properly do not worry about the error of DLL. It may be caused by a small error in the registry, which CAN be caused by reg cleaners. If you want my suggestions for maintenance, just ask. I can tell you reg cleaners are not on it and not needed for Vista.

Now the bad news
Many virus disguise themselves as winnet.dll.
Make a full antivirus scan. Update
Donwload and make a full scan with malwarebytes
Make a full scan with eset online scanner, no need to download.
