System FORCES installation of drivers when I plug in USB drive

Q: System FORCES installation of drivers when I plug in USB drive

I have been trying to solve this problem for 2 hours and it has brought me nearly to tears. I have googled the hell out of it and every 'solution' I find is useless.

When I plug in my USB flash drive, Windows 7 Home Premium automatically locates and installs what it thinks is the 'correct' driver. I want it to STOP DOING THAT.

I have turned off Windows Update, but that really isn't relevant because it is not searching the internet for the file and then installing it; the file is SOMEWHERE on my system already and it is finding it and installing it.

I have uninstalled the device in device manager and manually gone in and deleted the existing driver file. I have used search to try and see if there is another copy of the file on my system and it does not find one.

If I try to go in and manually update the drivers for the drive, it refuses to let me; it tells me that the best driver is already installed.

I have found a set of instructions posted all over the place that begins by telling me to go to START and search for "gpedit.msc", but when I do it does not locate this file.

There has GOT TO BE A WAY to FORCE the computer to STOP automatically installing drivers for plug and play devices, and to let me do it manually!!!!

Preferred Solution: System FORCES installation of drivers when I plug in USB drive

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Just wondering, why do you want it to not install the latest drivers that windows can find?

As the title says, I am getting Plug and Play/DCOM error, forces restart. Also I was having random ads pop up but I believe they are being blocked by my adblocker.
At first I was not sure if it was an infection or a corrupt file or maybe miscommunication between my two SSDs.  After looking into it, from other peoples same issue, it looks to be an infection. I am running windows 7.
It seems to happen at random times, sometimes 20 minutes after log on sometimes 4 hours.
I checked other posts to see the same problem, it appears that the solution varies per case, so I figured I should post.
I have Malwarebytes installed, I have used it for a long time now but it shows nothing as far as an infection goes, I have also tried the tdsskiller as it was recommended in other threads but that also yielded no results.
I have a few things going on here but I did my best to make sure my post is to the terms. If I need to add anything else, let me know. Thanks in advance.
I should mention that as of recently, passed few days its only the DCOM error and not the plug and play one, it all started tuesday and the dcom only started maybe around friday.

I've got an Acer laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 that was state of the art back in 2010 and I can still play games like Diablo 3 and Sims 4 on it. Now I use it as a media center and it's been parked right by my TV for the last couple of years. When Windows 10 first came I noticed that there was no longer any support for Catalyst Control Center as the OS stated that all the controls I needed was in the OS. That turned out to be wrong. My TV screen changes color every now and then, from normal to pink, and I need the control center to switch from RGB to YYC. Also, I have black edges around my TV screen that I use the control center to adjust perfectly.. Using the scaling option in Windows is useless, it only scales the edges along with everything else. I found a way to trick Windows and managed to install the control center anyway and we lived happily ever after. Or so I thought. Yesterday there was this huge update and it wiped my control center away, and now it's impossible to get back. Did Microsoft find out about the cheat?
So I'm in a tough situation here. My graphics card is out of date I guess, but my laptop is so damn nice I refuse to buy a new one just because Microsoft refuses to accept legacy drivers. I've tried several different HDMI cables and I've tried this with two different TV sets and gotten the same results. Is it really that much of a deal to write a few lines of code to those who are still using the old machines?

If anyone out there is si... Read more

A:Latest update forces me to buy a new laptop/ATI drivers

What drivers are you using? I have an even older laptop (2007) with Radeon X1600 and it works OK on the latest update.

I downloaded the Winows 7 drivers as described here

I guess in your case you'd want this link (in internet explorer only) http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...=radeon%204650

The 64 bit drivers are the bigger ones (32 bit have the same name but are smaller) and the Windows 7 ones work well for me.

I did install the control center but uninstalled it as it didn't seem to do anything and I didn't really trust the source (I could only find it on a torrent).

Need some help. This is the second time that has happened to me, the first, well i had to reformat because i could not find a solution. When I installed new or older drivers for my nvidia 9800gtx, my vertical refresh doesn't turn off even though it says it is off. It is effecting me within games where i need it off. Any help?

A:Installing new nvidia drivers forces vsync on

Try this, download the latest driver from Nvidia's site, then get Universal Extractor

On install only check the top box. It will create a Extract on the right-click context menu.

Rather than double-clicking the file, this will extract the contents of the .exe file, No go to Device Manager and under Display adapters, choose update driver software, now go back to Device Manager, click on the Nvidia card and yjr .inf file and update driver software

I started my computer using installation disks for a system repair and recovery, that matter is fixed. BSOD occurred (this is the correct forum) while using installation disks and Microsoft believes that I have outdated drivers that have been causing all my BSOD's. Are any drivers being used while installation disks are being used (not on desktop)? If so, what are they?

Also, could this be a hardrive failure if BSOD occurs during system repair?

I have recently assembled a new PC with the following configuration

Motherboard - Asus M5A97 R2.0
RAM- Transcend DDR3 4GB x 2
Graphics card - Saphirre AMD RAdeon 5450 HD
HDD- 1 TB Seagate Barracuda Sata drive

After installation, i checked in the bios and found that HDD and the internal DVD drive was not detected. Once I changed the port settings to IDE I was able to see them in the bios.

However, once I tried install windows7, I keep getting the error "a required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing". This error has been discussed on this forum and others" however, none of the solutions worked. I have already tried the following

1. Used the Microsoft DVD/USB maker
2. Tried using and USB rather than a DVD
3. Tried switching the USB ports as suggested by one person on the net
4. I tried dowloading the AMD AHCI drivers on a USB and plug it in when the error comes and windows asks for the drivers. However, it is unable to locate it. In fact if I try to browse and select the drivers, the USB does not show up on the options. If I try the same thing with a dVD, then it says that windows cannot open the CD

So after 4 days of effort, net search etc. I am still without an OS. Can someone please help and also let me know if there is any compatibility issue?

Ensure that the USB is inserted into a USB2 port during installation. Unplug all other devices (with the exception of the mouse, keyboard and drive to be installed to). In your BIOS, ensure that the "Legacy USB" or similarly named setting is turned ON.

Where have you downloaded the Windows 7 ISO from? Only download it from this location:

Yea, so for a long time now, my computer has been getting a blu screen of death every single time i restart it. Once or twice it started normally, but 90% of the time i have to do a startup repair. Recently, ive been having to do a full system restore as well with each statup.

At this point, i just try to never ever shut my computer off ever again. I know i need a new one, but for now, i just want a working one becuase i cant afford a new one.

Im not sure if it's a virus, or corrupted file. I recently downloaded an MMORPG, called AIKA. Last night actually, and the antihack system wont let me even start it up, because it says some of my operating system files were corrupted. So im assuming it has a lot to do with that.

I know a lot of people use HIjack this, so i downloaded it, and have a log for you now. I did shut down one process i thought was suspicious, so im not sure if it'll show up. The description of it in the task manager was People near me.

so heres the log file i got.

Hi everyone,

Ok, I've searched around online, and I haven't been able to find anyone with a matching problem, never mind a solution. I'm supporting a dozen or so new Dell machines, Optiplex GX520 with Winxp pro. 3.00 GHz P4 with HT, and 2 GB of RAM. All in all, nice machines. However, when people try to startup the machine with the flash drive hooked up, it crashes.

I'm not talking about trying to boot from the drive. It reaches the windows login screen, and when they enter their credentials to login, the computer restarts. When I login, I get one of these

With the wonderful "crash caused by unknown device drivers." I feel like XP should be able to handle a unknown device driver without crashing? Is there a better way to solve this then hang up signs that say "don't plug in your flash drive until you've logged in?"

Thanks for the input!

I had just posted about another problem that mysteriously fixed itself, but I'm not so sure this one will. This has been going on for some time, I tried dusting as a solution, didn't work. Whenever I go to burn a CD, as the drive is spinning up as it begins to burn a CD the computer restarts itself, pretty much every time. It usually doesn't even get to the point where it starts burning. Is this a problem with the drive? With the computer somehow? This is usually burning songs from the hard drive, and I've tried it with both iTunes and Nero. It sometimes even does it before I even hit burn, just as a result of putting the blank CD in the drive. Very odd.

Ok, here is the deal, and I don't know why it happened. If someone can explain why this happens, I'd be grateful.

For some reason the system hung/froze at the Windows flag logo during start-up. I know what caused it, but I don't know why, and would like to understand why.

I made a backup of the system image, and backed it up on an external hard disk. I restarted the computer, and it hung at the Windows flag log. The flag animation froze and the system become completely unresponsive. The only way to shut the power down was pushing the power button to force computer to do a hard shut down. Ie started the computer back up and it booted into the Windows Error Recovery screen.

I first chose the ?Start Windows Normally? option, and it froze at the Windows flag logo again. I forced the system to shut down by pushing the power button, and chose the ?Launch Startup Repair? option when the computer booted back up. Windows was unable to repair the computer after two attempts, and the computer recommended that I use a Restore Point to fix the error. I chose the most recent restore point that I created earlier. I rebooted the computer and loaded into Windows just fine. But to make sure everything was O.K., I restarted the computer again, and it froze again at the Windows flag logo. I shut the computer down and restarted it, and the Windows Error Recovery screen appeared again. The computer failed to repair the program, chose my restore point again, and when the comput... I just updated my graphics driver to the latest from the Nvidia website, and I was again disappointed to find that the bug I reported to them long ago was still not fixed. For some reason, despite what I prefer to name "My Computer," it is always renamed to "My Computer" on startup (since I installed the drivers). I'll admit, this is not a serious issue, but it is bothersome as I use "My Computer" as a toolbar in my taskbar, and the extended name skews icon placement, etc.

I'm curious if I am the only person having this problem, and if not, if there is any solution. Any information is appreciated. The Nvidia site offers no assistance whatsoever. I will never purchase Nvidia again.

To note: I am running WinXP Home Edition, AMD Athlon XP 2600, 896MB RAM (128 On-Board GFX [Nvidia GeForce4]). I think this is all the information that is applicable

Am trying to install a game on my kids computer, XP, and the stupid developers don't give an option to install anywhere other than the system drive where I don't have room for it and there's no way I can free up the 12Gb it needs. I have stacks of room on other drives. It's an installshield based installation.

Is there any way to force it to install somewhere else? It's Medieval Total War II Gold btw if that is any help.

I contacted Olympus who have advised that by re-installing the software, I have all the necessary components and suggested it is a problem with my computer. I know the software disk is OK as I have installed it onto a friend's computer and it works perfectly.

Do you happen to have a very large file (possible large backup/ disk image etc.) located on that hard drive. Sometimes low levels of installed and available memory coupled with an attempt to defrag a very large file can cause extraordinary slowdowns.

The story is my hard drive got messed up so I decided that since I had my files backed up I would just start all over. I have a little problem with my custom USB device. I think it has something to do with Vista installation routines... So here are the steps that describe the problem. I install drivers for my device on Vista and than plug in the device. I go through all the wizards that windows suggests but Vista can't find a proper driver.Than i goto to my Control panel, find the device and do the "Refresh driver" directly pointing to the place where drivers have been installed. And than everything goes fine. So the trouble is Vista can't find proper drivers when i plug in the USB device. What could possibly go wrong? The same works perfectly on XP. The best thing to do would be to remove all those strange drivers and if given the option "remove driver software" too. Just right-click each 1 and select "Uninstall".

The perform a full system scan using MalwareBytes and see if it comes up with anything.

I recently bought a 1TB external drive in the first month was the paradise of about three months here been hell ...

The problem is that the windows when i connect the disk, sometimes it correctly detects and installs the correct drivers, other times it detects wrong and installs other wrong drivers.
When you install the wrong windows drivers in Disk Manager says that is not present or does not detect the capacity, despite the indication that I have the the connected USB device. Another indicator light is always on the disc, rather than intermittently (indicating that it is accessing data) ...

To be even more difficult the drivers are registry keys ...

Have tested it on several PC with W7 and XP sp3 and the problem still occurs ...

Have I contacted the support of the disc but the impression I got is that understand of hardware even less than me ...

Can you help me please!!

A:Wrong plug-and-play drivers

OMG! what is the brand/make/model of the external drive in question?!? I have never heard of a known brand to do something like that unless the enclosure itself is hosed and/or beginning to fail. Post back & let me know, take care!

Hello Folks...........

My C: drive recently started giving me HD521-2W error when I ran "PC Doctor 5 for Windows" diagnostic multiple times in the past few weeks.

I created backup images of both the partitions on this 320 GB HD ( Active partition named "HP_Pavilion" and Primary partition named "HP_Recovery") onto an external USB drive using Macrium Free edition.

I later took PC to a PC repair shop and installed a new 320 GB WD hard drive. However, he DID NOT create 2 partitions as the old drive BUT he made this new drive bootable and downloaded all the necessary drivers.

My questions are :

# 1 ) Is there a tool or an utility I can use to download all the drivers CURRENTLY installed on the old hard drive onto a CD/DVD for later Clean Install of XP?

# 2) How can I make this new hard drive look exactly like the old drive - I mean, it must have 2 partitions using Macrium backups images I already created ?

I hope, I explained this situation to best of my knowldge and created least amount of confusion.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm using Windows XP SP2. My computer model is HP Pavillion a810e.I recently sent my pc out for repair and they upgraded my Macromedia Flash to 6, but my SBC dial-up install CD is not compatible with anything higher than 5.It operates but some browser features are "inactive" like bookmarks will not import and are out of sync, also I cannot change the appearence of the homepage colors etc.I was informed that once I downgraded macromedia flash back to 5, my CD would work normaly as it did before. So I tried the steps on oldversions.com for the downgrade by first downloading the uninstaller, running the uninstaller, downloading version 5 to my desktop by saving it.But when I try to run the install for 5 it tells me that it cannot find my plug-ins folder.I am not sure how to find the folder by using the browse option to find the right directory in order to finish my installation of macromedia flash 5? Or is this because my browser is not working fully, should I uninstall and reinstall my browser CD first before installing macromedia version 5?I'm close to having my problem solved once I get version 5 back. Please help with any suggestions. Thanks!

Hello, i've recently installed Windows 7 and cannot get my printer (lexmark p4350) to work.

The problem is that the installation of the drivers won't continue without printer plugged in, and when I plug it in, Windows automatically installs it's own driver, which doesn't work.

I've tried disabling Plug&Play for the duration of the install process, but haven't got any luck, i'm starting to think that it is impossible on Windows 7 (i know that on Vista it was just a matter of disabling it through services.msc).

I would appreciate any ideas you might have.

A:Problem with Plug&Play and installing my own drivers

Although written in response for a Vista problem with your printer the answer holds true but you will have to point it to where the driver is on your hard drive.

I made this thread yesterday about my Xbox 360 controller not working: http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-...-problems.html I thought that was my only problem, but it's now apparant that my windows will no longer allow me to use any plug & play devices other than what I already have installed (my mouse, keyboard, webcam etc.). Any new peripheral I have that I connect that would have worked in the past within seconds now has its driver searched for only to come up with the driver not being able to be installed or even recognised at all.

UPDATE: I've been googling the hell out of this for 3 days now, by chance I found an article for Windows Vista dated from 2008, seems all I had to do was direct the driver install to "C:\windows\winsxs" and bang! Problem sorted, all my USB peripherals auto install quickly again.

That should resolve any issues you have with usb devices unless it is hardware related.

EDIT: Make sure to run this bat file as an admin. Right click the bat file, run as administrator. Code used for the bat is on the website, and verified by me as being the same when editing the bat file.
Nevermind, saw you resolved it.

I have an older IBM Think Center Desk Top computer running XP. When I put a new device on a USB Port, the computer recognizes a New Hardware Installed and brings up the new Hardware Install Wizard. Since the device is plug and play, I select automatic and I am on line but I get a notice the Wizard can not find a driver. I went to the device manufacturer and downloaded a driver to the Desktop. I told the wizard where the folder was but still get the message that the Wizard cant find a driver?? This has failed for devices as simple as USB flash storage, A cd drive and for an external Hard File. Any Ideas how I can get drivers loaded for these devices???

I came across an issue that I find confusing. Whilst trying to install a software to run a mobile USB flash modem, the software pops this message:

your current device installation settings is configured to prefer drivers from Windows Update over locally installed
drivers. This can cause Unlimited data Manager not to work correctly.

do you want to change the settings to prefer locally installed drivers over Windows Update?

What does it imply if I change my settings to prefer locally installed drivers over windows update drivers?
And can this action be undone and where/how? (I searched my machine but didn't find where this option is)

I've been having some trouble on my computer getting the sound to work. I've traced the problem (I think) to the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" - in Device Manager, it says that "this device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" I've tried this solution but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

My problem is that Non-plug and play drivers stop responding, which causes the computer to stop functioning. Then i'll have to turn it off from the cable and reboot.

Sometimes it happens after 10-15 minutes from the time I turn the computer on.

the previous pic. shows the drivers i'm having trouble with

the next pic. summarize what i'm facing due to drivers problem. [pic. from tuneup]

To mention, the problem started 2-3 days ago.

Have you checked for malware? I'd suggest running the free Malwarebytes. Update the database and run the full scan. It could take over an hour depending on size of hard drive.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

If Malwarebytes is clean I'd next check the integrity of your system files. Try running System File Checker. If it finds any problems run 3-4 scans.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I am currently running a tablet netbook with w7 pro x32. It's not powerful enough to run photoshop very well, and my license wouldn't let me put it on there anyway. However, this netbook is a tablet. I'd like to use it for graphics, as it has a Wacom digitizer.

What I'm interested in doing is running a VNC to access my desktop (running w7 pro x64) and be able to control photoshop from my tablet.

Currently, I've tried Windows Remote Desktop, and while it works fairly well, two things are wrong:
1) Mouse/Tablet input seems to be compressed. This turns my curves into straight lines unless I go reeeeally slowly. Is there any way to change this?
2) There seems to be an option for plug-and-play drivers to be transferred, is there *any* way to make pressure sensitivity work?

I have looked into other solutions, such as TightVNC, UltraVNC, and LogMeIn Free, but VNC isn't very secure (and I don't want to deal with SSH tunneling) and LogMeIn Pro is expensive, while LogMeIn Free is limited.

On that note, I haven't been able to find out *anything* relating to the security of Windows Remote Desktop. Is it encrypted, or what? Security is important to me, as I am running both the desktop and the netbook on networks that I have no control over, and are inherently insecure.

I haven't found much info about Remote Desktop, so can someone please help?

A:Remote Desktop Access with Plug-and-play Drivers

Hi there.

The problem with RDP in your case is probably that the Graphics format you are trying to display on your tablet computer is incompatable with the display option on your remote computer - for example a 24 inch wide screen monitor won't display very well on a smaller tablet computer with different orientation.

Try and select a video size which will fit on both machines.

Running Photoshop or any other video application on a remote computer also will require you to have a decent UPLOAD speed from the rempte computer.

A lot of home broad band systems advertise really fast download speeds such as 20mb but upload speeds can be painfully slow - this is done also to stop people having HUGE home web sites or to prevent a lot of file sharing via p2p or torrents.

The tablet should be able to run the remote photoshop app just fine so long as the upload speed and graphics systems are sufficient.

RDP (so long as you aren't using the web interface) is reasonably secure.

If you want to operate in "Paranoia Mode" try setting your home (or remote system) as a VPN. These are generally very secure with decent encryption.
