My computer will play DVD burned on disc, but will not play the ones I buy from the store. It used to. Now it won't even recognize they're there.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a dell inspiron laptop running windows vista, which is 2 years old. Recently, whenever I put a cd in the disk slot, the computer doesn't register that it is there. When I go to my computer, there are options, like autoplay at the top of the screen, but there isn't a symbol for the cd, and if I click on autoplay it ejects the cd. Itunes also doesn't seem to know that there is a cd in the drive. Help?

It maybe your cd- rom lazer isn't working properly or you have a corrupted operating system. I would try restart> first boot device cd rom> win xp in drive and see if it reads it that way at all. If not then I suggest you get a new cd rom drive for your laptop. Sorry I can't be anymore helpful I hope this post sparks new ideas for your problems.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Please help!!

Hi courtney33. Welcome to the forum.

Please see the following from Microsoft:
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Do the first fix first, and if it does not work then do #2 and so on.

If none of these work, let us know!

I got a new Sony Vaio laptop a couple weeks ago and have been having nothing but problems with Vista.

When I put in a movie on DVD (official copy, not a burned copy) it does not automatically recognize it an open InterVideoWinDVD the way it should. When I open it manually and try to play the DVD it still doesn't recognize it. When I go to run and attempt to run it it says "please enter a disk into the drive".

I've tried multiple different dvds so I know it's not an issue with the dvd.

Anybody have any ideas on how I can fix this?

Thanks in advance.

I've got a 4yr-old Toshiba Satellite laptop (Model: A210-12U) which I recently restored using the recovery CD - it's running Vista SP2. Please bear with me as this may be a long-ish story, but it helps to explain my problem.

Around a year ago, a virus made its way onto my laptop and almost destroyed the OS - I'd consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable software-wise having studied IT at college, and so set about the long process of trying to fix my laptop without resorting to the recovery CD. It was a patch job, but after a month or so I had it working again and it was fine for a further few months or so, before I noticed that my DVD RW Drive would no longer read and/or burn CDs. I spent hours trawling internet forums for help without any luck and was subsequently convinced that it was a hardware problem. As I needed to use a CD burner, my cousin lent me his USB DVD RW drive and this didn't work, meaning that logic suggested it wasn't a physical problem with the drive, rather that it was more likely a problem with the registry/OS. This wasn't surprising seeing as I'd done a basic patch job following the virus infection a few months earlier.

After becoming increasingly frustrated with my laptop in general, I backed up my data onto a portable HD and used the recovery CD which came with my laptop. The laptop booted the CD up when it was outside of the OS (as per the instructions that came with it) and restored the entire computer to its ori... Read more

I already went into BIOS and the dvd drive was listed. However in Device manager the dvd drive is not listed. I already tried Microsoft Fixit and already scanned for malware and viruses, nothing came up. This happened kind of all of a sudden. I have a compaq presario f700 laptop with Windows Vista. The only thing that has really changed on the laptop is I updated the service pack which said it was a required/recommended update. When i try to play a dvd i hear noise and the light goes on steady and then blinks and then goes off. Nothing comes up and when I go into windows media center or WMP there says there is no cd/dvd in the drive.

I got an a HP Pavillion 20-b 120 a PC with win 8.1, running with IE 11 , and downloaded you tube videos with Wondershare version 4.9.1 paid software in MP4 , and also converted them into MPEG2. I can only watch them in MP4 on my PC, with MPEG2 I get no video, only audio. I burnt them with Any Burn onto DVD -R or +R 4.7 GB, finalized them, but they will not play on my Sony DVD recorder, just the message "There is no title." Also I can burn only about 3.5 hrs. to a disc.
About 2 years ago I downloaded you tube videos with Keepvid .com and got about 12 hrs. on a 4.7 GB disc and they played on the DVD player. Keepvid has been changed since then and won't let you do it anymore and I also believe the free version got a virus, and I had to reinstall Windows lately.

I have an LG Super Multi GH22NS50 drive (on Windows XP), which is supposed to be able to read and write DVDs, but while it seems to be fine with CDs it just won't recognise DVDs. I've tried two different brands of blank DVD+R in there (Maxell and Intenso), as well as some proper film DVDs (not copies) and the driver still won't recognise them, stating that "there is no disc in the drive" (whether I try it through Nero 9, PowerDVD or simply in My Computer). I notice in the driver's manual that Mitsubishi Kagaku Media and Verbatim are cited as the "recommended" brands of DVD+R disc for this driver; is this at all likely to be the problem?

I've installed the latest firmware for the driver from the LG website, and I've tried uninstalling the drive and rebooting, but still no luck. The drive properties menu (under Computer Management-Device Manager) says that "this device is working properly" and there are no error messages there. I've not really used DVDs, either blank or regular, on this computer before (although it is a few years old) so I don't know if this is a recent problem or if it's always been like that. I'm guessing the laser is faulty - if so, is a cleaner disc likely to solve the problem or is a new drive needed?
Any help or suggestions on the matter would be much appreciated.

Sounds like a faulty drive as the CD's are working properly. Drives use a different laser for CD's and DVD's. Time for a new unit.

A:Satellite A210-12U - DVD RW Drive will recognise DVDs but not CDs

Hi Ben

In my opinion it is hardware related issue. You are right about lens position. It must be calibrated for CDs and also for DVD. If the optical disc drive cannot read one of these medias in general it can be lens calibration problem.

To be honest ODDs for this old A210 are not expensive anymore. I recommend you to buy new one or used one on eBay. Exchange it and test the functionality.
To be honest I don?t believe there is some trick that can help you to get it working again.

Please help - the tech support people where I bought my computer (Ibuypower) gave up.

The problem: My NU DVDRW DDW=061 DVD/CD-ROM, while recognizing data disks and audio CDs and able to burn copies of both, does not even recognize the presence of a DVD in the drive.

When I put a DVD in the drive and check in my computer in the correct location, nothing shows up.

When I put a DVD in the drive my Power DVD states that the disk in the drive is in an unsupported format, and my Windows Media Playwer and my Real Player state that the there is no disk in the drive.

I unplugged and replugged in my DVD Drive (its a built in). This had no effect (nor did it change my ability to play CD audio.

I looked at the properties of the drive and all my programs are enabled to read DVD and all other media formats.

It stumped the tech support guys after 3 hours.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hey everyone,

I'm having a bit of a problem here that I actually discovered while trying to help someone else out

I recently formatted and reinstalled XP and all of my programs and what-not. I've just now realized that I can't seem to play DVDs anymore on my computer. I pop a DVD in and nothing happens. I've watched the drive from Windows Explorer and it doesn't change from "CD Drive (G: )." If I actually try to click the drive it asks me to insert a CD into the drive and try again.

I've tested this so far with US copies of Boondock Saints and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. The only media players that I have installed right now WMP 10 and Winamp. I just tried installing PowerDVD 6 but when I ran it nothing happened - the process popped up in Task Manager but nothing on screen.

The two drives that I have are an ASUS CD-S400/A and PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-103 (taken directly from Device Manager). I'm trying to play the DVD's through the ASUS, which I believe is what I used before, but I've tried both without results. Computer is up to date and virus/adware free.

Let me know if there's any more information that I can provide.

EDIT: Oh yeah, here are the driver versions as reported in Device Manager:

ASUS - 5.1.2535.0
Pioneer - 5.1.2535.0 (is it weird that these are the same?)

A:DVD-ROM will recognize some DVDs but not others

Very likely just an old dying drive. My typical advice is to try and boot off a bootable dvd because that rules out a software conflict. But in your case, it works with some disks and not others, so this wouldn't tell you much, unless you could find a bootable disk that isn't working in Windows.

I think your best bet is to just replace the entire drive, you can get them for less than $20.

Alternatively, if you have a computer that can read the disk, you can just copy all the contents (including hidden files/folders) over to a flash drive, then install the software that way. This won't work with certain copy protected disks (commonly games and movies) but it would work with Office.

Hello,
I'm running XP on a 2 YO desktop. My two CD/DVD drives functioned perfectly until the other day. I've installed no new programs, but I think a Microsoft update happened at about this time.
I tried the MS fix, deleting both upper and lower (i forgot the entire name) files in the registry. The I tried the MR FIXIT auto tool from Windows, no luck. I tried the solution I found on this forum here 525621-solved-dvd-cd-rom-drive.

I see both drives in explorer, and trouble shooter in device mgr says they both are functioning. But, they both indicate that they are empty even though there is a disk in both. One disk is blank and the other I tried is a commercial dvd. No luck with either.

Hello and welcome Hasnain sorry you had to wait so long but in a nutshell my friend just replace the optical drive - very simple and not expensive at all - depending on what you buy ie a Blu ray will cost more than a normal red laser drive.

Having said first up you could try running a cleaning disk in that drive it could just be a dirty lens as you say but don't try doing it by hand as you may knock the gear out of alignment. Oh and check the cables are all snugly in place on the drive and the board.

I recently got a new hard drive to replace a dying one. I used Ubuntu Live to burn information from the dying drive with XP on it to DVD's without issue.

I installed XP on the new drive, hooked up everything, used the old drive as a slave drive just in case I missed anything, and tried burning some more information to DVD. Here are the facts:

- Using Windows XP SP3 on the new drive.
- Old drive has XP, is hooked up as a slave, and is recognized by the new drive. I can drag n' drop information from one to the other.
- DVD-Ram recognizes DVD's and CD's, but no writeable media in either format.
- Ubuntu seems able to write to the drive if loaded from an Ubuntu Live CD.
- Attempted uninstalling drive and letting windows auto-load drivers again without success.
- I also have a CD-RW that works just fine in the same system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I can give any extra information I have if you have any questions.

Also when I insert a disc in the player, in the MY COMPUTER window, the drive D: will change from "DVD-RAM DRIVE" to "CD-ROM."

I have tried a few solutions with NO luck: 1) Deleted LOWER FILTERS in the Registry. 2) Changed the IDE ADA/ATAPI controllers to PIO Only from DMA. 3) Microsoft's Fixit Center

Any solutions offered are greatly appreciated.

This issue has been puzzling me for weeks now I have no idea on how to solve it due to my very low knowledge of computer hardware and it's software. I apologize if my terminology is a bit off, but like I said, knowledge of this subject is very limited. Anyways, the problem I have been having is that my CD/DVD+-RW drive will no longer recognize regular DVDs. What I mean by regular DVDs is non-burned DVD movies and DVD-ROMs such as games. My drive will still read and play CDs and burned DVDs. What steps should I take in order to try and solve this problem? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you need any more information or have questions relating to the issue, I'd be glad to answer.

How old is the optical unit?
The first step is to unplug and reseat the connection to make sure its not as simple as that. if you have another cable try it. If this is a SATA drive with an older ' non-secure clip' type, they can very easily break connection. Unfortunately what you describe can also be the first symptom of an optical drive that is at the end of its life.

My DVD-ROM works fine with all the DVDs but when it comes to blank DVDs it doesn't recognize it. I have an old desktop computer (DELL) that runs windows 10 Pro 64-bit. The DVD-ROM is also writable (DVD-RW). I tried two different blank DVDs with different capacity and the PC didn't recognize it. Also, i tried a USB portable DVD drive.
Please help

I have a Mashita 842s DVD-RAM superdrive in my Toshiba M400 notebook. I am running XP w/SP3. I don't recall whether or not in the past I've tried to play movie dvds on it using such as WinDVD and Windows Media Player 11. However, recently I've had the need to do so. Unfortunately, although data DVDs (both those I've burned myself and software discs) and audio cds can be read without a problem, movie dvds are not recognized as even being in the drive. The lack of recognition includes Windows Explorer, WinDVD and Windows Media Player. Because the other type of discs work fine, I'm assuming this a software or configuration problem. I've used both Windows and a third party utility and both say the driver(s) are the most recent. I would appreciate any and all assistance in diagnosing and correcting this problem. Thanks.

I have played normal DVDs off the drive, but it won't recognize Blu-Ray dvds. When I connected it, it supposedly downloaded the drivers, and when I went to windows update it had no new updates for hardware. Also, I went to the ASUS site, but it had some "egreen" update for the hardware, which I'm not sure if it did anything.

When the blu-ray dvd is "read" it comes up as a blank dvd or cd. I'm not sure which specifically, but I don't think it really matters.

The drive itself is OEM... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135188

Apart from Blu-Rays it works great... but I bought it for that reason alone...

Drive in Question: LightScribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer.

Computer in Question: Hp Pavilion dv7 1270us.

Issue: I have bought both DVD+R and DVD-R (Memorex)(16x, 4.7GB, 120min) and tried them on my computer. My drive recognizes neither of them. It also wouldn't recognize my Fight Club Discs (Legit Collector's Edition). It's fine with Audio CD's, Game CD's, and other movies. I insert the discs, I here them spinning for a little while, then it just stops. I click "Open" or "Explore" on the drives and it ejects the drive, asking me to insert a CD.

I have tried messing around with the drives. My Computer > BD-ROM Drive (E > Properties then Fiddling around with all the drives.

I have uninstalled my Disc Drives and reinstalled.
I have updated the drivers.
I have called HP Tech Support, this was a heavily scripted event guided by an Indian woman I'm guessing reading off of another computer. She led me through seemingly vague steps, not really knowing anything about my problem.

Hi Tech Support,

My laptop read DVDs just fine before I burned a cd on it this weekend, now it will only read cd-r's and no longer DVDs. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the driver as well as the secondary IDE channel, I have rebooted after each uninstall. I'm hoping that it isn't fried now because my son really like watching his movies on the laptop!

I have an AOpen DUW1608/ARR DVD-RW drive. It worked great until a day or so ago, and then all of a sudden it only reads CDs and not DVDs. I have tried updating the firmware, I have tried restore points back to when it did work. When no disc is in the drive My Computer says its a DVD-RW drive. When a DVD is in the drive, the light flashes on the drive and eventually it is shown as a CD-ROM. I can open the drive but I do not see any contents.

I apologize if this issue has been asked before. But can anyone help.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Service Pack 3 on a Compaq Presario V6000 laptop with an HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N drive.
Until recently, I never had any problems burning audio and data CDs or DVDs.

Windows recognizes the discs I burned previously, but when I insert blank DVDs now I get one of two error messages: "Please insert a disc into drive E:/" or "E:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function."

A couple of weeks ago I was having a similar problem while attempting to burn audio CDs, with the same "incorrect function" error message, but that turned out to be a simple matter of checking a box on the Recording tab of the Properties. At that time, however, i was able to burn DVDs using Roxio Easy Media Creator 10. But yesterday I tried to burn a DVD of some photos and once it was finished burning and verifying the disc I suddenly got an "insert disc" error message.

Also, about the same time the burning functions stopped working properly, the disc tray started spontaneously ejecting itself. Not sure if they're connected, but that's the whole story.

Any ideas? I've been trying solutions from previous threads with similar symptoms but have had no luck so far...

Help! I have a Sony Vaio Windows XP computer and I recently lost my cdr player and dvd player/recorder - they just vanished from "My Computer". It would only show the A, C and D drives not the E and F for the cd player and the dvd player. I managed to restore the devices by deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry editor and starting the system up again. The cdr and dvd players are there but...

the cdr will play both cdr's and dvd's. The dvd will play cdr's but not dvd's and both players don't recognize a blank cdr. I am trying to drag some .wav files to the dvd recorder to record a playable cdr.

I checked for updated drivers and they are fine. One not of interest is that in the properties of the cdr it shows it is a DVD/cdr player when it should only be a cdr player and the DVD player says the same. Anyway, hope someone can help.

Thanks!

Mondo
