Vista Drops to Limited Connectivity Daily

Q: Vista Drops to Limited Connectivity Daily

I have 2 virtually identical Dell Vista laptops (details below), both bought about one month ago. One has a reliable connection to my wireless network, the other initially connects fine but then drops to "limited connectivity" almost daily.

On the problem laptop, everything will work fine, then my daughter goes to use it and the "internet is down". Looking at the laptop, I see it has "limited connectivity". Frick. It can see the network, and signal strength is "excellent". My wired desktop unit and the other wireless laptop work fine, so definitely seems like an issue with this laptop.

If I reboot, it will work fine... right up until the point that it doesn't again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I tried the Vista "fix my problem" wizard last night - I can't remember the exact steps it did but I know the first try didn't work (maybe releasing and renewing its IP addr from DHCP?), the second step worked... so hooray for that. But I don't want my daughter running the "fix my problem" wizard every 24 hours!

I've searched the forums and can't find any answers for the situation where the networking works, then doesn't, then does again.

Details:
Router: Linksys WRT54G, WPA2, DHCP for 5 users w/ max expire time (7 days?)
"Problem" Laptop: Dell Studio 15, Vista Home Premium. One month old.
"Good" Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1525, Vista Home Premuim. One month old.
Desktop: Dell XPS 400, XP w/ SP2, Linksys wired card
Also have a Wii on wireless network, if it matters, soon to add an Xbox
I don't have any 3rd party firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm) so it's just whatever firewall Vista has by default - I haven't changed it. I did replace the standard Dell/McAfee A/V trial with SpySweeper AntiSpyware and AntiVirus.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone,
I'm helping my girlfriend's dad with his new toshiba satellite L505D, it's running vista, and i have it over at my place. I finally got the wireless working to the point it uses the WEP encryption in place, but at his house everything is wired. When I plug in the LAN cable everything works for a minute or so(i can view web pages) then it goes straight to Limited connectivity. WHen I view the dhcp table on the router it no longer exists. The only way to get it back connected is to reset the network adapter, but then it drops again...I've never seen a case where the connection is there, then drops to limited, any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

A:vista wired lan drops to limited connectivity

Welcome to TSG.
Think that since the failing environment is at his house, you will probably have to shoot this bug at his house.
When you say that everything there is wired,do you mean all hardwired to a router, modem,or modem/router ?
From the failing environment we would like to see, when it fails.

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. IPV4 for Vista

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

My internet connection is strong, all 5 bars. Randomly though, the connection will be dropped down to Limited Connectivity. Once I disconnect, then reconnect, the internet connection is fine. I can continue browsing with full signal strength. A few minutes later, it's been dropped to limited connectivity again.

We have three laptops in the house. The two Dell's we have are both dropping the internet. The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I use (I'm only home for the month from school). My parents have said that they never had this problem before on the other Dell either. The fact that the HP still hasn't dropped the connection once makes me thing it might not be the router? I have no idea. Any suggestions???

A:Internet connected, then drops to limited connectivity

Are all Machines connected by wireless

A bit contradictory really -
The HP laptop hasn't dropped once. My laptop has never had this problem on any other networks I useClick to expand...

Lets assume a PC issue as other devices are solid assuming they are connected in the same way - ie cable or wireless

I would suggest first looking at the DELL service TAG numbers on a label on the PC and using that info to goto the dell website and updating the network adapter drivers

If wireless lets see an xirrus screen shot - it maybe interference - but would expect all to drop connection

Lets also see the ipconfig /all and ping tests when its working and also when it disconnects - see below

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

I have 2 laptops, one running Vista Home Premium SP1 and the other running XP Pro. Both are connected wireless to the same home cable internet connection.
On the Vista laptop, internet connectivity dropouts have become so frequent that they make web browsing on the machine almost unbearable.

While the Vista machine has problems, the XP machine loses no connection, performing just fine. When I am not experiencing connectivity drops I get intermittant VERY SLOW page loads. I Get etiher "Connection to the Server was reset, Try again" messages or have to continually reclick the link to get it to connect.

The laptop has a Dell 1395 wireless WLAN mini card and it reports that it has the latest drivers.
I have disabled Bluetooth in case it was causing a conflict, I have turned off the lan card, set the wireless power settings to Maximum performance and disables some page scaling thing that vista does all to no improvement.

I am running PCcylinn Internet security 14 as well as MS Defender, have disabled both and again found no improvement.

We have had this laptop for about a year and these problems have become progressivly worse for the past 3 months or so. About 3 months ago Dell replaced the motherboard under warranty (my wife spilled a glass of wine on the laptop). To the best of my recollection these problems began AFTER the MB change, but I can not say that for sure.

Any help in diagnosing this and ultimately solving this would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Constant Wireless Connectivity drops on Vista, fine on XP

What about logging in to your wireless router on the vista machine? Does that seem slow as well? Have you tried transfering data between the two computers via a shared folder to test the connection without going on the web?

I would try going into the wireless router and double checking settings like mac filtering and playing with wep wpa on or off.

Another thing you could probably do and I would try this first is to change the frequency or "channel" of the routers broadcasting signal. Some routers you can change it from ex: channel 9 11 or 6. Some better routers have more options available.

We've now turned the password back to the original, but to no avail. I've turned the modem/router off for five minutes, then waited two minutes before turning the laptop on again, but that didn't fix it either.

This happens no matter what router I use and other laptops can connect to the networks fine without limited connectivity problems, so I'm pretty sure the problem is not with the router. I've searched it a lot in google but none of the solutions work.

Just not exactly sure what to look for next. This seems to be the only machine effected out of 6. Also the only one running vista and I'm still a bit new to vista. I have flushed the dns, cleared the arp cache and reset winsock so far, but there still appears to be a problem.

Are you able to connect the Vista via ethernet?

Disable encryption on the router and connect that way. Assuming success you should be able to re-enable encryption and reconnect. Use WPA-PSK (or WPA2) if possible. If you must use WEP use a HEX key, not an ascii passcode.

Hi, I have this desktop with Windows Vista which I just upgraded from Windows XP. I have a modem connected to the Internet and a Linksys WRT150N with firmware DD-WRT v24 SP1 on it. I have several more computers all with WinXP that are connected with a wire or wirelessly to that router and they all work fine. The Vista desktop, when it had XP, worked fine with the router when connected with RJ45. After I upgraded to Vista, (and of course installed drivers), the wired RJ45 connection worked well for a while and then after I restarted the computer, it would say I have limited connectivity and I have no access to my network or the Internet. I looked around for solution and it looks like many people are saying that they have the same problem specifically with Windows Vista and their other machines with Windows XP works fine. Anyway, I installed a wireless adapter on the Vista machine and for now I can use the Internet, but has anyone found a solution to this annoying problem?

A:Limited Connectivity, a Vista bug?

I can tell you straight up that this is definitely not a Vista bug., If it was then Vista sales would drop and that would be very bad for M$. What I can tell you is that you need to make sure your router/modem has the latest firmware update and to try disabling your firewall when this happens. The final thing I want to point out and many people don't seem to know this; when you open internet explorer and it says it cannot display the website click the link on that screen that say " Diagnose connection problems". It will try to tell you what is likely causing that particular connection problem and then do what the computer says to try and see what happens.

We have a modem which is connected to our router, Because the modem is in his room he can connect to the internet by attaching a cable from the router to his computer. But i can't connect through wireless ( tried using my iPhone and my other laptop).

When ever I try to browse it doesn't work and the internet connection says Limited connectivity. Could anyone please help?

I am currently in the public library and we only get 1 hour a day. I have a very important paper due 2 weeks from now. I can get into his room and on his computer no problem.

Can you please tell me how i can fix the limited conection issue?

A:Limited connectivity on Vista

Well,my guess, based on your description is that encryption has been set up on the router, which requires a password. If you don't know it,you will not get a wireless connection.
Or
MAC address filtering has been set up on the router, limiting your pc access.
Or
a router firewall has been setup to exclude your access.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an HP dv5-1015nr. My internet connection works fine when I am wired to a router or modem, but whenever I try wireless (on any router) it works for about 20-30 minutes and then I get a Limited Connectivity error. Let's add some pings when you can't connect.
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

Looking for a little assistance. I have a Dell E1405- just over a year old. Installed with XP when it came then had a vista upgrade from Dell. Vista was in place for 9 months and used wi-fi (public) and home DSL LAN connections for a long time. Several months ago, both wireless and cable stopped working suddenly. Had not changed any settings or installed anything further.

I have a cable modem that works fine with a desktop with XP. When I plug in to the cable modem to my laptop (vista) - I get a limited connectivity - Only local connection and no connection to the internet.

I have lurked on lots of forums for support.

Have reset network adaptor, run the diagnostics through the network and sharing center multiple timex

I uninstalled all Norton.

I reinstalled vista.

I reinstalled vista again with a clean/format install after backing up my drive.

I have a Broadcom 440x 10/10. I have disabled it and re-enabled it mutliple times.
Wireless- Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

I took it to Geek Squad. They recommended reinstalling Vista (which I did).

Probably missing it's drivers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again. Here's How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7
If that doesn't work, try a wired connection and let us know if that works.

I have a windows vista x64 and I have problem to connect to internet via wireless connection. Actually the connection to the network is fine, but I cannot surf the net and a Limited Connectivity error is shown.
The strange thing is that if I change room everything on my computer works fine. For example, while in the livingroom, with a full wirless signal, I have limited connectivity, in the bedroom I can surf the net perfectly.

The router (D-Link) is in the livingroom and the bedroom is further!

I don't wont to work in my bedroom for a lifetime!!!
How can I solve the problem?

I also have 2 other computers, one with vista x86 and the other with xp, but they connect to internet perfectly even from the livingroom.

Thank you,
Francesco

A friend has a HP computer with Win Vista Installed. It has started doing the Limited Connectivity on a unidentified network thing. He also has somehow lost Administrator privileges which results in messages that are saying that Diagnostics Policy Service isn't available nor is Service Control Manager. I didn't think of trying Run CMD ipconfig/all , so will do that and see if it helps.

Attempts to locate anything connected with this problem by say doing Run, Diagnostics Policy Service spits back the usual windows message that it can't find in this case Diagnostics. Should I have entered Cmd then typed into the DOS box xxxxxxx?

I personally have gone back to Win XP for my two machines as I am the Admin, have Win ADmin AS part of my programs and this sort of thing is a simple repair My Networks, then properties, right click repair.

Try msconfig:

If it says limited or no connectivity, there might be a problem with one of your software or router.

The troubleshooting on my computer rarely works to solve the problem and sometimes I can get on the internet but most of the time I cannot. I can usually get on if I unplug my router and do some troublshooting. I would really like not to have to do that every time I want to get on the internet. So far the Best Buy "Geek Squad" and HP Teck Support have been unhelpful. I could really use some help trying to figure this out! Thanks so much in advance!

Only problem with Download TSG Sysinfo is that my problem is on a vista system which has the limited connectivity. I am contacting on a Windows 8.1 machine.

Unfortunately programs that ran under Vista will not run on this machine.

So my problem with the Vista 32 bit machine is connecting to the internet.
I have now bought a usb wifi for my old m/c because I was getting limited connectivity.
The limited connectivity comes up when I start the, so I guess it is a problem with how the connection is set up.

Anyone know how to resolve this problem - it seems that lots of other people have the same issue?

Hi.

I read a few other posts and some have a few of my "symptoms" however they're either XPs or involve multiple computers. Thinking that could change the answer, I figured I would post this.

My computer, a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile running 32x Vista Home Basic (SP1), decided to bum me out and not connect to the internet two days ago. Beforehand, everything was running perfectly and smoothly, and I could connect to anything. A day before the lost connection I had to use System Restore because of a mess I had created and this was my only available option. However I don't think this was the cause of my limited connectivity, because I restored the settings to only 4 days back. I don't know, maybe this isn't relevant at all.

I know the problem is my computer; it's not the router because I've tried three different routers all with the same issue (my father's router, my mother's router, and a public hotspot). When I plug the cable into my computer to get direct access it still gives me limited connectivity, and I cannot ping my localhost or anything else pingably possible for that matter. I guess more proof can be found here:

So,I would try a couple of things.
First,a router reset.Hold the reset button in for at least 15 seconds. From your ipconfig post, you are deinately not seeing the router so no network addresses are being assigned.Sometimes a router reset will fix this.
And you may have already tried this, but
If no joy,I would make sure that you can make a hardwired connection like so :

Tips on setting up broadband connection, courtesy of Johnwill

You don't need any setup disk to configure a broadband router.
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
• Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
• Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
• Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
• Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
• Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
• Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

I have a HP laptop G60, running Vista, and internet wireless adapter Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g, driver version 7.6.0.114 and have, all of a sudden, started having problems with my wireless internet connection. Getting message limited connectivity. I have tried following instructions on previous threads related to this problem, including disabling and enabling the adapter. About 3 times of doing this repeatedly the last couple of days, I have gotten a brief home page and subsequent page, but then it times out, seems like it started loading something to cut off the connection. The signal strength is Excellent, but it either times out and more often, it is saying limited connectivity.

I have also done a system restore to a date when it was working fine.

Wondering if it has something to do with the driver.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Wireless limited connectivity - Vista

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from HP's web site.

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router; then reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

Do you have any problems when connecting this laptop by ethernet?

Are any other computers using your wireless? If so, how are they doing?

I check the compatibility and it works. I installed the 64bit drivers and windows detects it. It even lets me choose the wireless router i wish to access, i put it the WEP key but then it says it cant connect either because the WEP is wrong or a low signal. Its neither of those, because i have a very good signal and i have the WEP key right.

I have tried 3 different types of adapters, and have disabled the WEP security, and i still get the unsuccessful connection message. I am at a loss now, and i would be very grateful of any type of help. Thank you,

For the past two weeks I have had problems connecting wirelessly to the internet. Prior to this I have had no such problems since getting the computer about 18 months ago.

I have a Dell laptop with a Netgear router which works fine if I connect between the two with an ethernet cable.

The signal strength is excellent and I have been able to correct the problem for varying periods;perhaps an hour perhaps several hours by variously changing the wireless channel, powering off router and computer for a short period before rebooting, restoring factory settings and reconfiguring the router etc but invariably the problem returns and I have to resort to the ethernet cable again.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful; my computer knowledge is fairly limited so please be kind.

About a month ago I deleted a google virus on my other vista laptop (Toshiba) and think I messed up the computer's registry or something because ever since the internet connection has not been able to work perminently. Some times after restarting and randomly clicking buttons in network connections, it is able to work again but only for a couple of days at most. Usually, it ends up saying "unidentified network" access: limited connectivity.
The ip address of that computer is a 169.254.xx.xx, so I know that there is something not right with the DHCP. I have tried reseting the ip and winsock configuration numerous times, giving the computer a static ip, enabling the DHCP Toggle Bcast, but don't know what else to do. I don't know if I am not doing them right or those methods are the right way to fix the problem. I have also tried to download applications off the internet like Microsoft Fix that are supposed to edit internet errors and then put them on a usb and transfer them to the other computer but they never seem to be able to run on the other computer? :S
If anyone has any other solutions or thinks they know what might be wrong with the connection, can you please let me know? Thanks!

You'll have to give the experts here more info if you want them to help, how do you connect to the internet, what browser do you use on what type of machine, laptop or desktop. ?

Just what troubleshooting steps have you taken and did you get any errors when trying them, if yes what were they.? Do you have anti virus software installed and what is it, what firewall do you run ?

A lot of questions I know but the more information you give the better it will be to get you answers that will help you.

I will make a leap to a virus issue (but it may not be, it just that I have seen a lot of issues with DHCP over the last 2 days ) , also post back the ipconfig /all and device manager - you will need to copy the results to the working PC

It may simply be a firewall issue
what firewalls do you have?
try to disable the firewalls and see if it connects
Theres a virus going around which is causing problems with various service including DHCP that will not start.
so check these service and see if they are correct - if they are stopped and you cannot start - or it starts and on a reboot it stops again - it may well be the virus as thats the symptoms i have seen in the last couple of days

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. C... Read more

Hey folks---

I'm a newbie to this site so hopefully someone can help me out

I'm housesitting for a professor and she has wireless set up with an Airport.

She's given me her network password, and I can connect to the network with 'limited connectivity', which means that I cannot get on the internet.

I know that the internet is working because I can get on using her laptop, which is a mac.

She has WEP security.

How can I fix this?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi,
I am having trouble connecting to the internet on my Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. I am getting limited connectivity. I have never had a problem with it connecting before that was not resolved without much trouble. It has built in wifi and it is enabled.

I reset the ipv4/6 internet setting.
I have reset the router and turned off the firewalls on my router and computer.

It will connect to the internet on a Lan connection.

I have tried everything I can think of, help would be incredibly appreciated.

Yes another limited connectivity post on Vista, sorry but I have read a number of other posts and nothing has helped so far.

I have been having terrible lag playing multiplayer games via wireless so I switched to a Belkin Gigabit powerline, when it was first installed Christmas eve it showed limited connectivity. After turning the network connection on and off it was fine for the rest of the day.

Yesterday I return to find it stuck on "Limited Connectivity". I have read a number of posts on here and tried a couple of things:

1)Rolled back to the 23rd
2) Swapped cables around in case its a cable problem
3) change the SPEED and DUPLEX to 100mbs full duplex
4) Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.
5) Turned the PC's off, unplugged the router and the Powerline adaptors and waited 20 minutes (as suggested in another post on here)

So far no luck.....

Let's do the easy stuff first.

Remove the power line adapters from the picture and run a cable from the system to the router. (This is just a diagnostic step, I don't expect you to leave it that way). First step here is to find out it's the power line adapters or a different issue.

Hi Vista Forums

I'm sure this has been discussed to death but I just cannot seem to find a solution to my problem.

I just formatted my Girlfriends computer because she had a lot of malware and viruses. It was a system restore from a Vista to factory settings of Vista and all was done successfully, that is until I tried to connect to the wireless network in my house.

I typed in my password for it, tried connecting but nada, I just get Limited Connectivity notification within the Network and Sharing Center.

Any idea what has gone wrong? I have searched high and low on the forums and none of the suggestions they had seemed to fix my problem.

I should also mention this is not my best area of expertise so if you can keep the advice in layman's terms it would be greatly appreciated =)

Also if you need any additional data please request so, I put in everything I could think of the top of my head...cheers!

A:Limited Connectivity after reformatting Vista

Open a command prompt, right click on it and choose to run as Administrator.

Type or copy/paste netsh winsock reset, press enter key

Reboot the computer and see if this helps

My Vista desktop had been connected to my wireless network for a year. Starting a few days ago, I only see limited connectivity: connected to wireless network but not to the internet. Other PC (Win7), Macbook, iOS devices, etc. all can connect to internet with no problems. I switched wifi card, with no change. The Vista PC will connect via ethernet to wifi router. I tried the built-in Windows troubleshooting (automatically obtain new IP address, reset network adapter). Always results in "can't identify network".

Here is the ipconfig dump:

When you connect by ethernet to the router do you get internet access?

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Disable encryption on the router and see if you can connect. If successful you can probably re-enable encryption and reconnect.
