Start window,Desk top and Tool Bar

Q: Start window,Desk top and Tool Bar

When I boot my system and log in, all I get is a blank screen: No start window; No Desk Top Icons and no tool bar -- nothing. This condition occurred after my system crashed and tried to reboot. What the possible causes and solutions?

Preferred Solution: Start window,Desk top and Tool Bar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Start window,Desk top and Tool Bar

Addendum from Larrystevens1: Windows Explorer does appear, and I can open up any folder or file including programs and their activations.

I am running XP on a Dell PC.
While moving the mouse across the screen, I inadvertantly clicked either the left or right hand button.
Now the bottom tool bar across the whole bottom of the screen has doubled in size. Additionally, the Icons on the right hand side of the tool bar have changed from a horizontal to a verticle configuration, and the day of the week is also now being displayed.
Can anyone out there help me unscrew my screw-up.

looking for some help..... ( was a member a while back , but account gone ie: wrong user or pruned )

all the desk top icons and tool bars have disappeared when windows loads , cursor is working , when selecting windows user ... but none functional when entering desktop page ... wall paper is visible but nothing else

No commands work , such as task manager etc and of course no programs , internet or anything just blank and unusable

I have run computer in SAFE MODE , this seems to work fine with icons present and everything as normal......and have run various scans as precautions ...these picked up nothing ...

I can run task manager in safe mode and have input 'new task' >explorer.exe> this is running and present , but on reboot to go into windows normally all is the same.

also have typed issue into google , and run a few solutions i found from the search ... but to no avail..

such as

>start >run >MSCONFIG> select start up on general page >

and adding new task regedit.exe ( but to be honest i didn't have a clue what i was doing , just following instructions )

any advise would be greatful on this issue, many thanks in advance

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Install windows 10 and confirm activation as suggested in forums. Downloaded Windows Media Creation Tool to create fresh reinstall. Ran it to create 64 bit ISO. Now using the ISO to reinstall windows 10. At 30% restore, it failed. I tried various recovery. Even did chkdsk on drive c with /r and also with /f. Same problem again - failure at about 30% restore.

Reading in forums, I discover Refresh Windows Tool(exe). Downloaded and ran it (tool) to download Windows 10.
What I dislike. No Pause or ability to use a download manager. When this download of about 3gb is done, where is it saved? How to use? Yea, automatic for I still have prior install files (programs, data folders, etc) which means nothing was done. Did restart hoping for a fresh reinstall - no changes. Thus I am posting in this forum with paragraph 1 (media tool) and Refresh tool (paragraph 2).

Went into BIOS startup and told it to use DVD (boot order priority), but instead window normal login was done and given. Thus, use window recovery within to execute the ISO.

Sometime in the past I happen to download a a windows 7 from on line to be installed on an acer,
I still have it an have a need to start up a Desk Top, . .  Can it be done ?

A:Can Acer Window 7 OS be used on a Desk Top ?

The only way to know if it's physically possible would be to try. If it's a recovery disc, then it's likely to only work with the system it is intended to go onto. It will expect to find the Acer laptop hardware, and if it doesn't, may refuse to install, or install the drivers etc for the Acer, and Windows may not be able to boot.
As far as being a legitimate Windows installation goes, since it's specifically for an Acer, it will almost certainly be an OEM version of Windows, which means it is only licensed for the original system it's intended for, and can only legitimately be used on that system.
With that said, if the system you're loading it onto has a COA certificate showing a matching license, and it loaded onto the system and worked OK, then in practice as far as licensing goes it's a moot point where the installation actually came from...

After a recent all-day session with HP Tech support who took remote control of my computer, I now have a picture on my desktop that appears when I open my laptop computer. The picture is different each time I open my laptop and gives me the option to change the series of pictures if I don't like the type of pictures it is displaying. When I click in the center of the screen, my login window appears, I enter my password and then my regular windows desktop picture displays along with my program icons. On occasion, when I log in, a bing search bar window appears as shown below.

The initial picture that appears when I open my laptop is not a big issue because I just click in the center to bring up the login window but having to close the Bing window is a nuisance. I assume the picture is somehow tied into the Bing pop up. Is there some way to keep this popup from appearing?

I could not power up my desktop but with a lot of finagling I got it going(power cord - in out).
Somehow, luckily , I got something on my monitor and the power button went from yellow+steady, to white.
Using Macrium I recovered an image. I then ran SFC, Dell diagnostics + all fine now ).

Question, I have a rescue flash drive WinPE for Windows 10.
Could I have booted from it to get to see something on the monitor even if I could not get in the BIOS or even get anything on the screen?
Do you just hold the power button until the flash drive takes over?
I do not know how to use a rescue media if I cannot start the PC and googling is not helping.
I cannot ask the Macrium forum as I am not a paid member.
I have run MBAM with exploit and Defender. I also have SpywareBlaster and am behind a router.
Thank you

A:Desk top cannot start

To boot from external media you need to be able to load code from the BIOS flash into RAM.
Further, in order to boot from an external device, the order of boot devices needs to be changed from MS default to specify a USB device or a CD/DVD.

So if you can't get your BIOS shown on your monitor or screen, that becomes a hardware issue.

The icons on my desk top have recently been highlighted on the name portion of the icon before my desk top failed to load - I don't know if that means anything or not but thought I'd mention it. When I start my computer it begins the normal start up process and appears to be okay until it gets to the splash screen: Microsoft Windows xp Home Edition, that's as far as I can get, nothing on my desk top loads. I went into safe mode and ran a complete scan (Norton) for any viruses and there wasn't any detected. I did a registry repair too to no avail. Prior to this I tried a system restore to get rid of the highlighted icons on my desk top and for some reason and each time I tried it it said no changes had been made; I tried it again in safe mode and the same thing. I forget what it was I clicked on to get it to check the disk and it did - it said it found a few errors and corrected them. I have my system restore cd's but all they will let me do is re-load XP, and I'll lose everything in my computer. HELP!

A:Desk Top Won't Load, Start Up

Hi hugsandstuff and welcome to TSF

Per your post, you may have ran chkdsk, but to be sure, boot in the Safe Mode. Then go to Start>Run then type in 'chkdsk /r' without the quotes and with the space between k and /r. Then push Enter. It may take an hour or so for it to finish. Just be patient. There are 5 levels of tests that it does.

Be sure to run your virus and malware programs while in the Safe Mode.
Use more that one malware scanner. I use SpybotSearch&Destroy and SuperAntiSpyware. Both are free and can be downloaded at these links:

If this don't fix the probem, see if you can borrow a copy of XP home with the same level of SP on it as is on your computer (SP1, 2, or 3). With it, you can do some repair work that should leave all your programs and data unaffected.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

A:Window Tool Bar

are you using XP? what area on toolbar-in the right corner you mean-system tray?

start with running adaware and spybot;
if nothing changed post a hijack this log here- [links for all 3 tools below]

follow the next instructions on posting the Hijack This log here;

It’s very important that you save the log to its own permanent folder on your hard drive, such as program files or My Documents/hjt,(not temporary files or the desktop) or you may loose the ability to undo any changes you make, so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET;- Await further analysis here.

Thanks for all the help. I want to make my shorcuts start programs and windows (In WIndows Xp Pro SP3) at a certain position and with a certain size.

For instance I want to open Excell at position 20,30 (x,y) with a window size of 750 x 200, or maybe a internet explorer window at position 129, 357 with a window size of 562 x 397.

I gave the odd numbers in the example so that people responding will understand that I want CUSTOM SIZES. I know how to set the shortcuts to start maximized and minimized and also window tiling. That's not what I'm talking about. Does anyone know of shortcut switch that I can use?

For instance in some games if you want to start the game with cheats enabled, you put "-devmode" after the directory path in the "target" box of the shortcut properties.

Is there any other way?

There is an awesome program called "Montage3"

which I use, but isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Please help out.

I have a lot of different types of media on my external drive. It's used as a media hub between several computers... blah....

I need to search through my music folders. I want to search for all files that aren't mp3, mp4, mp2. h.264, aac, aiff etc etc (Popular media types). It's organized very well, too well, too many folders to look for the maybe 30 of 2000 files that I want. Is it possible to search for all files that are not of type x file type?

I tried a search for ext*(.flac) and nothing appeared and this file type is included in the index file types. So basically the new windows search blows holes in the roof. - there are many .flac files in this drive....

Hi ech0419, Do you use Windows Search 4.0? It will work with XP and Vista 32 and 64. It didn't come with Vista Home Basic and I found it at MS. I do a bit of audio and find mp3, mp3pro and ogg the best file type for recording. When it comes to searching for a file wouldn't it be best to do so by name>for instance, I have many folders and projects going on in different file formats. I keep them in a master audio folder (lets just say its 1gb of stuff). If I want to find all mp3's I'd do an advanced search and select "master audio" as the folder and it takes 30 seconds. But if I want say Beatles Babys in Black, by the time I can type Beatles, the search has already found all 60 Beatles tunes in 5 seconds. Am I close to what your after? Have a look at this MS link for Windows Search 4.0

Please Help!!!! My computer takes about 5-10 minutes to load the tool bar whenever the system is started. I don't know why or how to fix it. Please help. Thank You, Jason

A:slow tool bar loading upon start up

Go to this page, and download 'Hijack This!'.

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Please delete the old copy so it can't be used

Launch Hijack This, then press Scan, and press Save Log

This will generate a text file that will list all running processes, all applications that are loaded automatically when you start Windows, and more.

open that file
Go to Edit | Select all
Now click Edit | copy to copy it

Do not change anything just yet
Come back to the forum, Right Click and paste its contents to the Security forum

G'Day Trax,

You can do it, but only by combining taking a Screenshot, with the functions of the Snip Tool;

Click on Start for the Menu.Press the "PrtSc/SysRq" keyboard button for the Printscreen.Click on and open "Paint".Press keyboard buttons "Ctrl+V" will bring up the screen-shot of your desktop, with the Start Menu captured and superimposed.Click and open the "Snip" tool, and use as per normal, to snip-out the Start Menu.
I do this all the time if I want to keep a filed record of any of the Drop-down etc. Menus that I may wish to refer back to. An Archive, if you wish.

Here's an example just done of my " >> Quick launch " Menu, produced by my outlined method;

Hope that this works for you. However, if your Start Menu extends from the top of your Desktop, to the bottom, just do it in two overlapping sections, and if you're really keen, any good photo software will allow you to 'stitch' the two sections together.

Cheers Mate.

Just bought this desktop, set up Firefox and my bookmarks on the tool bar. Loved the way Firefox opened at startup and had Firefox and my bookmarks accross the top of the screen with my background picture for the rest of the screen with the other icons on it. I installed Malwarebytes which I have used for years and ran a scan. Now I have to open Firefox with an icon and my bookmarks are gone. When I open Firefox it fills the screen. Can I get it back to the top and on startup or how do I go back to "as shipped" ???  Thanks

@Burrett, welcome to the forum. It sounds like you may have a conflict with Firefox and Malwarbytes.  You can go into Settings / Options to make the changes that you want:  The blue line in my picture is pointing at the Settings area, Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I'm sorry to say I have a pc virus. At first it presented itself as a message that was trying to sell me a solution to many infections that were found on my PC. The error message was "Remove Security tool". Now I cannot even boot up my PC. I cannot get into Safe Mode either. Is a full system restore the only way to go or does someone know a solution to this problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome. :Let's run this and see if we can't get it quick.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. I got this particular virus close to a week ago and have had no success whatsoever in remedying the situation. I was simply browsing the internet (at a motel 6 on an unsecured network) when I received a "Tamper Alert" from my anti virus software (Symantec). I was receiving close to 100 notifications a second. I immediately turned off my wireless internet adapter and started a full scan with the Symantec software. It was successful in quarantining one Trogan.Gen.2. However, I continue to be prompted by "MS Removal Tool" that my computer is infected and I should use their service to get rid of it. I made sure not to accept any of its false claims although I did click on the X in the top right corner in an attempt to close them and clear the clutter from my screen. The virus as I have heard it does, prevents me from running other programs once the "MS Removal tool" has started.

For the last few days I have been starting my computer and trying to run virus scans as quickly as possible before the "MS Removal Tool" prevented me from doing anything. However, I began typing this on my home computer (not laptop which is infected) because I could not get on the internet. I started my laptop and opened the Symantec software to check the name of the virus in the quarantine but did not start a scan. In doing so, the "MS Removal tool" never started up and thus I was able to email this to myself and attach the logs. My computer see... Read more

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Please download ComboFix and Save it to your Desktop.

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.

Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications, usually via a right-click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Can you help me determine which malware removal tool/program I need. I need to download to my computer to a flash drive to run on my friends infected computer. I believe his browsers have been hijacked and fake spyware was installed along with a few other programs that are questionable. He has been using his computer without any anti-virus and downloading programs from the internet. Like myself he is an elderly gentelman and didn't know about internet safety, malware or viruses. He is fairly new to computers and is a novice internet user. I looked over his computer and other than a few fake spyware programs and his browser redirecting his search results, I believe the level of infection may be minimal but I don't know for sure. After spending most of the day explaining how the internet works  along with the do's and don'ts and safety, I now need to clean up his computer. I have AdwCleaner/ Aut2Exe on a flash drive along with the free version of Malwarebytes. I have purchased Webroot SecureAnywhere for him because that's what I use and have been pleased with it.
My first question is should I clean up the malware first before installing Webroot or try to install it first and let Webroot clean it up? My experience has been, although Webrood is a good anti spyware blocker, it doesn't do that good of a job removing malware already installed. Thanks to BleepingComputer I found AdwCleaner did an excelent job and most of the time that's all I needed to do to clean it up. ... Read more

A:Need help determining which malware removal tool to start with.

List of Free Scan & Disinfection Tools which can be used to supplement your anti-virus and anti-spyware or get a second opinionList of Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD/Rescue CD utilitiesWith most Adware/Junkware/PUPs it is strongly recommended to deal with it like a legitimate program and uninstall from Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) in the Control Panel or an alternative third party uninstaller like Revo. In many cases, using the uninstaller of the adware not only removes it more effectively, but it also restores many changed configuration settings. After uninstallation, then you can run specialized tools like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, AdwCleaner and JRT to fix any remaining entries they may find. These tools typically find and remove related registry entries, files and folders to include those within the AppData folder and elsewhere. As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. We recommend that people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting them deal with a malware problem. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individu... When I double click the Modems icon, my mouse pointer changes to an hourglass momentarily and then disappear. The Modem properties dialog box does not open and no error message appears on the screen.
I checked knowledge base at Microsoft.com, article#Q254954, but the suggested solutions did not help. I have Small business Server 4.5 on Compaq desktop 5166 w/166 processor, 126mb ram.

A:Cannot start Modems tool in control panel

Have you tried copying/expanding a new copy of modem.cpl from the NT installation CD? The .cpl could be corrupt.
BTW, I know the article is for missing icons but it gives you the method to replace your current modem.cpl
