Big Problems - Windows Live Messenger & Vista

Q: Big Problems - Windows Live Messenger & Vista

Hi

I have just purchased an ACER computer and am running Vista. Previously I ran Windows Live Messenger on XP without any problems for a couple of years. However, I fired up my new computer about a week ago and I am being driven nuts trying to get Messenger to work. It is the latest version of Messenger - when I attempt to sign-in, the start-up screen for Messenger just "hangs there". The two small men are spinning in circles, my username and password are correct and my security setting APPEAR to be OK. Today I attempted a sign-in and after returning to my computer some 4 hours later, the two men were spinning. There is not even an error message to give me some clues.

Please help.

Thanks

Steve

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone!

I really hope someone out there can help me out with this, because itís driving me insane! I have searched and searched through endless forums and websites trying to find a solution, but I canít seem to find one. I posted this in the Web/Email section last week, but no one replied, so maybe I'll have more luck in here.

Here's the deal.... Iíve got a brand new computer, running Vista Home Premium, and from the moment I got it I have been having problems with Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Live Messenger.

I can surf the net and chat on WLM at the same time for hours on end, but at random, I start to get ďInternet Explorer cannot display this pageĒ and WLM disconnects. Itís not always the same websites that causes it, and it doesnít happen every time, like I said itís just really random.

For example, earlier it happened with TSG.... the main Forums page opened fine, but when I clicked on a forum name, I just got "IE cannot display the page", and WLM disconnected. It even happened when I went to the Microsoft website!

I donít think itís an actual connection problem because when it happens, AIM and other stuff, like Outlook, Limewire etc. stay connected and my little wireless icon in the taskbar says I am connected as normal. It just seems that whatever is wrong just affects IE and WLM. However, the IE problem still occurs even when WLM isnít running, so I guess it canít be caused by a conflict of the two programs. Ohhhh I just do... Read more

A:IE7 & Windows Live Messenger Problems with Vista

Update:

I installed Firefox and the exact same thing happens. I can access the internet no problem, and can access websites. Then, all of a sudden, for no reason I get the following:-

"The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

And Windows Live Messenger disconnects.

Soooo.... now I'm thinking it's something to do with my connection settings?

It still doesn't explain why WLM gets booted off and AIM and other stuff stay connected, but it might be a good starting point....

Anyone got any ideas?

(Note to mods: Sorry guys, this is probably in the wrong forum now isn't it. Feel free to move it )

Hi I bought an advent 7201 today and it's working great so far except for windows live messenger. I keep getting the same error message but nothing I do helps. I've read loads of forums but i'm not very good with computers. Am I screwed bcos i have a netgear router? Please help, I use messenger all the time.

Thanks, Tani

A:windows live messenger on vista

Hi Tani - WLM does usually supply an error code if problems have occurred - Have you received anything which may point us to the problem? Also, the troubleshooting function on WLM can sometimes help...sometimes.

I have a Netgear router with Vista Business and WLM 8.1.0178.00, and all works fine. Any extra info you could provide as to error messages or codes will be helpful.

Hi,
I posted this in a reply to someone else on here but wanted to start it's own thread.
My Daughter is having a weird issue w/ WLM and Myspace. When using the new computer w/ Vista and she tries to log on to WLM it says the username/ password is incorrect. She tried to send a PW request to her email and it said that she has a limited acct. and that they could not send her the info. But on the old computer she has no prob logging in to either program/place mentioned above (she turned it on and logged right on within minutes). Vista is doing something to cause this problem. What, I don't know. Because it don't matter what browser she uses. Same prob w/ IE and Firefox running.

Control Panel - Windows Firewall - Change settings - Exceptions - put a check in allow Messenger or Windows Live (not sure of the exact entry as I am not running Windows Live)

hi, since ive had vista ive had several problems and there are two that i cannot seem to eradicate, firstly vista will not let me load office 2007 and secondly windows live messenger once i sign in, my laptop freezes and the only action i can take is to unplug my laptop n restart it that way! can anyone help with either problem?

A:vista and windows live messenger

Hi -

What exactly happens when trying to load Office 2007? Is install source an Office 2007 DVD?

RE: Live Messenger - re-install it.

How much RAM installed in your system? How much HDD space remaining?

Run these 2 for me -

msinfo32 - saved as an NFO file
START | type msinfo32 | save in default NFO file format - you'll see the NFO file extention when you go to save it

Vista System Health Report
START | type perfmon /report | 60 seconds - viewer appears | save as HTML file

Zip up NFO & HTML file and attach to your next post.

Hi,
I have recently got a new computer with Windows Vista which, when signing into Windows Live Messenger, gives me the error message of "Signing in failed because you do not have the correct user ID and password for your HTTP proxy server. See the connection tab in Messenger Options. For help, please contact your system administrator" with this message the error code is 80070197. When troiubleshooting that error code however it doesnt find anything. I have used Windows Live Messenger on this computer on my internet at home but I am now back at uni and it does not work on the university network server. I have asked the university, who claims Windows Vista is not compatible or something.. the rest of the internet works with Windows Vista, just not Messenger. Is there anything I can do to get it working on a University Network?

Thanks heaps.

I found this post via google and I have the exact same problem. Is there a solution? When running the troubleshooter it says the gateway is offline. When I run the test on the proxy settings it says it's ready to connect.

Hey, you're problem isn't with compatibility i'm on vista too and Windows Live msngr works fine... A few things to try;

- Using Webmessenger
- Using Pidgin (downloadable alternative, which i think connects to an alternate server to connect)

Who's you're ISP? i used to have problems because of my ISP... do you have any other connection issues (when browsing the internet)?

Hello all

I am having a few problems with my Windows Live Messenger , it either wont sign it , takes forever to sign in , or when it does sign in , it only stays signed in for about 2 mins then trys to reconeect
If i manage to get it to stay signed in , my contacts cant seem to contact me at all , and i belive that my contact list is not auto updating when new contacts come online

Ive tried everything to the best of my knowledge , ive opened up the ports for Windows Live Messenger on my firewall , with no success
Ive tried installing an older version of MSN ( 7.5) which worked up until the point of running it , at which point it then asked me to update to the lastest version and thus my problems retuned

It has been suggested that my install of Vista may be corrupt somewhere , which would meen i would have to sit and reformat the thing, which to be honest i cant be botherd to do unless it is essnetial

I would apprciate any help that you guys can give and i am happy to answer any questions you may have

Hi,

I've tried installing Windows Live Messenger for Vista. But whenever I start it up, it says Vista has a critical error and needs to shut down in one minute. I've confirmed that Live Messenger is the culprit. Anyone else have this problem? Was it fixed in 9.0 beta?

A:Windows Live Messenger shuts down Vista 64-bit

Hi -

While true that Messenger runs out of the "Program Files (x86)" folder, it can and does run on Vista x64 here just fine.

Vista itself would never tell you T - 60 secs and counting unless it was the 4 min warning from Windows Updates. You may find the source of that message to be foreign - to check that out -

I suggest that you proceed to to our Security Center, Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help Forum, to have your HJT logs reviewed by a Security Analyst.

Be sure to follow THESE STEPS carefully before posting your logs in the Security Help Forum.

Please be patient as the Security Analysts are very busy and one will get to you as soon as possible.

Hi there. had some trouble with WLM, couldn't get signed in. that was resolved (thanks!) but I am having a new problem. I cannot connect to a contact with a gmail address. I added her, and she shows up in my contact list but only appears as offline. We were both on line, but she showed as offline. then it suddenly changed to Mobile, but I could still not connect and chat with her. Other contacts popped up as available and I could chat with them. Is it the gmail that is the problem?

any suggestions?

A:Windows live messenger problems

is she signing using a Google Talk or using MSN?? i dont know if it is possible to chat to Gmail users thru Google Talk.
The only way is if she registers her email with .NET Passport and signs in using WLM. did she do that already?

Hi, new here. Sorry if this is the wrong forum, please move to appropriate one, thanks. :)

Basically I'm on Windows Vista 64-bit, loads of problems with Windows Live. I've always been using old msn, but I accidently now can't go back to it. So I've been struggling for hours trying to sort this, unless I'm doing something wrong, possibly.

Anywho the error is I sign in and straight away (1-5 secs) I get 'Windows Live Messenger has stopped working'. After which the program closes.

After all the trouble and errors I can't get past this one, I'll be honest it is REALLY infuriating me at the moment.

Before hand I used to get an error that it couldn't log in and that there may have been something wrong with servers, or something. I ended the process of the Nvidia Network Access Controller to solve that, but I get this new error now.

Help, anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, so a few days ago I updated my Windows Essentials and it updated my messenger to 2011. I did not like that version, so I uninstalled it from my laptop. Then I installed an the old version I liked, (or I think I did.)
Anyways, the problem is with my cam.
As you can see, it says "Start or stop a video call" It did not say that before. It used to say " Invite contact to send cam" or " Send your cam". Now it only says "Start or stop video call"
Does anyone know how to fix this and make back to what it said before? I really need it back to that way. Or is there a version of messenger that has it that way? All help is appreciated. Thank you very much.

A:Windows Live Messenger problems

Well, an update, I asked some friends and this is what happened.

This one can see the old version options.
But this friend says that "start or stop video call" is given to him for all his contacts.
But at the same time, this friend said that the option "start or stop video call" is only given to me. To the rest of her contact list, its a normal "send cam" or "start or stop contact's cam"
Is there any way to configure my settings on messenger to show the option "send my cam" or "start or stop contact's cam" instead of "start or stop video call" ??
I would really really appreciate any help on this. Please. All ideas are welcome. I really need the help. PLEASE.

Hi all, Im hoping someone can help with the new windows live messenger which I have downloaded recently. I cant seem to access some of the content and am being given an error message of " your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."

I have searched my security settings in IE and Mozilla firefox but it doesnt seem to make any difference.

Any help would be appreciated.......

A:windows live messenger problems

A few questions:

1) do you have any firewalls running? Some firewalls can be configured to block ActiveX content, as it a known route of infection.

2) Have you tried uninstalling, downloading a fresh copy, rebooting, and then re-installing. Sometimes this clears up "weird problems" with software.

This will help me and the rest of us see if we can't figure out the source of the problem.

This happened at work, but my home computer was ok.
Now it does it at home, but my new work computer doesn't do it

What is up with messenger?

If you say uninstall and reinstall, how does one save all the custom emoticons? And I did this at my first work computer and it made no difference! You would think that your profile and setup would be the same on any computer but with this it isn't, why not?

All works fine accept i cannot access into windows live messenger.

It is still the same router tho Linksys that the MSN actually work before the switch of ISP
so either there's something wrong with the ISP or there's something that i need to configure.

I have to actually open the task manager, end the program, and then re-start it in order to use it. I am having a similar problem with hotmail. I log-in to my account and am able to use the program for a short amount of time, but soon after it freezes--I can't click on emails, new folders, or go to a new website in that tab on ie. I seem to have lost the ability to load up Windows Live Messenger on my computer. None of the desktop icons work. I've tried running the "msnmsgr.exe" in Run... but that didnt work either. My next step was to try re-installing messenger on my computer. So I downloaded the setup file. However when I come to uninstalling the previous version in Add/Remove Programs, there is no "Windows Live Messenger" in the list ( the only windows live item in the list is "windows live essentials". And, of course, installing wndows live messenger from the setup file requires the previous version to be removed first (strangely, it comes up with 2 error messages when I initiate the setup file).

I have recently installed a new wireless broadband router, replacing my old one which had broken. Since the new router was installed (12th March) I have been experiencing this problem. Could be completely unrelated though.

As far as I am aware I have not deleted any Windows Live Messenger files on my computer. And "msnmsgr.exe" is still present in the Program Files folder.
So... yeah, I am slightly confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think a program I used for uninstalling windows live messenger has deleted some core programs and windows fails to do simple tasks like copying and pasting.

I was having issues with windows live messenger and was attempting to uninstall all componants and reinstall again but it wouldn't let me uninstall. After reading old forums on other sites I saw Revo Uninstaller pop up alot so I went with that.

After uninstalling with that, just going through the steps it said. I seem to have lost many basic functions. Noted so far, it doesn't realise connection status although I am online. Signing in to msn blue screen restarts my system. inabillity to cut, copy and paste files. Fails to system restore for some reason.

Any explanation and oppinions on my situation would be very greatful. I really don't want to have to lose any files currently not on my harddrive and I'm unsure what else to try.

I'm not very experienced with computers so if you give me replies in lay terms it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi -

See if system restore can help here. Choose a restore point prior to Live Messenger uninstall attempts -
START | type rstrui into the Start Search box | choose restore point

Hi, i recently recieved a message from a contact stating 'Your Pics are published here ' with a link to a site. I clicked the link, suspecting it to be me out on a drama trip. The link led to nothing...

A while later a friend informed me online that he was getting messages from me stating the same thing. I also noticed that conversation windows open and close, presumably to spread the message. I know there have been many threads posted like these, but this seems to be a newer version of the beast....

I have encountered another problem as well, a windows keep openeing named 'Trx66.ibann'. It has bogus offers and redirects my searchs to unrelated sites (especially when i try to play the game Urban Dead). I used my computers search function to find files which shared its name; i deleted them but it has continued.... I've tried a few 'problem solvers' like Vundo but they've all failed.... any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of SDFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program but before extracting the files.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with SDFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Ser... Read more

Downloaded Messenger 2011 onto my new computer recently; however, when I went to open it, it couldn't find the files it needed. Went searching for the program everywhere, nowhere to be found, not even on the Programs List. So, I decided, best thing to do would be to re-download it, but when the new installer opened, it said that the program was already installed, despite its apparent absence from the computer.
There is a similar problem with Adobe Flash - tried to re-download it, but it continues to believe it's on my system. Hopefully I explained the problem well :/

Any and all help appreciated.

Hi Taffy13, Have you try to re-install the MSN Live Messenger? Go to Control Panel>Under Program>Click Uninstall a Program. There could be a problem with the registry. Did you install the MSN on different drive?

A:Problems with Windows live messenger 9.0 installation

You might have some left over installation file information in your registry. Try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove any old instances of Messenger and Visual Studios you find in the output list. Download the cleanup file and save. Then run as Administrator.

I somehow got a virus/worm/thing related to my Windows Live account. Whenever I would log in, I would send a message with a link to all online contacts (the message being "HOT! HOT! www.isexsexsex.com" or something close to that). I would also spam any contacts of mine that came online while I was. I personally couldn't see the message going out, and I was not logged out of my account. I spent half a day trying to get rid of this dang thing before finally giving up. I first changed my password and security question, but that didn't work. Then I went and downloaded and updated every antivirus/antispyware program I could think of (Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, Crap Cleaner, Glary Utilities, AVG). After everything was fully updated, I disconnected my computer from the internet and ran scans from all of the above mentioned programs. While the scans were going on, I went on to a completely different computer and changed my passwords to all my important web accounts, then changed my Windows Live account password and security question to a completely different password from the rest. After all the scans on the infected computer were completed and everything they found cleaned up, I uninstalled Windows Live completely, then installed it again fresh. I then reconnected to the internet, and tried signing into Windows Live. Same thing happened, I was still spamming people. I then proceeded to go and manually check all my running processes, and they were all leg... Read more

Question:
Does my computer or messenger keep track of my add contact/delete/block/etc activity so that I can show it to someone.

Problem Summary and Troubleshooting done:

>> Used my own newly created @live.com email to test this and it is blocked upon add (is there some hidden privacy feature that I have enabled but am unaware of?)
>> I right click and manually unblock the new contact and it seems to work

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'll try anyway!!

I'm using a laptop i have at my parents house & i haven't been here for a few weeks, logged on today and was uanble to sign in to windows messenger, via the msn toolbar. It just froze and i had to shut everything down and start again.

I used ctrl, alt delete and had a program running called search_glow (i think it was called that) did a quick search on it and most things on it seemed to say just delete the windows/msn toolbar and the problem should be solved. I done this, but then i still couldn't log into messenger, so i deleted all windows messenger bits via add/remove programmes and tried re-installing it. Seemed to work but then nothing happened when i tried to open it by clicking start then windows live messenger!!

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling it a couple of times but didnt seem to do much good! so i thought i'd restart the laptop and try again!!

Touble is when i tried to restart it keeps saying msnmsgr.exe is still running and asks if i want to end it, i click end now and it seems to do its stuff, then it just comes up with the same thing over and over, even though i ask it to end it!!

So i went into ctrl/alt delete and clicked on processes and there's about 15 entries for msnmsgr.exe if i click one and select end process it says terminating a process can cause undesirable results including loss of data and system instabili... Read more

My problem seems to be Hotmail (mail.live.com) signing in by itself in the messenger form.

Everytime I log on my MSN, not even 15 seconds after, I receive a message saying we are 2 logged on my MSN (it says it's mail.live.com), and 15 seconds after it logs me off, kind of annoying.

I go in my email, everything is off and crap. Changed the password, secret question, everything and it still persist.

Anyone know what can be the cause?
Thanks in advance.

If you need some other info, just say.

I can't seem to determine if this is a fault of Vista or WLM itself, nowhere on the net can I seem to find anyone talking of this problem. In WLM, there are 2 ways to share files: you can drag and drop in a variety of places or you can use the menus to browse manually and share that way. I used to be able to do both. Now, however I can NOT drag and drop at ANY time in WLM. I CAN still use the menus and browse to share manually.
I have tried EVERYTHING I can possibly think of that could be blocking this from happening. I've scanned every last inch of WLM and Vista for things that could be related and I simply can't seem to pinpoint why I can't do it.
Also, I have already tried repairing WLM and uninstall/reinstall with no change in the issue. I am a minimalist when it comes to security, and do not use any anti-virus programs or 3rd party firewalls.

A:Windows Live Messenger/Vista - File Sharing Problem

This has been a issue with WLM for years. It seems every release of WLM it gets worse. I have the issue when I try to send files to my brother is goes dirt dirt slow...or doesnt even go at all. Theres real no fix to this issue...sorry your having the same problem..

Every time I wake my laptop up from sleep mode, my Windows live messenger refuses to start. It is still showing up in task bar but I get no response from right-clicking on it. When I double-click on it, the main messenger window opens but it unresponsive. Once I get the main msngr window up I can use Task Manager to disable the process and then start it again fresh. It's either this or restart the computer completely, which I have done a few times after I got sick of restarting the process. It works great after a restart.
Any clue why this keeps happening? It is a pain to have to restart the process every time I wake the machine up.
I also have Messenger Plus! installed, if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
KN

Hi, after I installed Vista Service Pack 1 on my my computer, Windows Live Messenger won't connect. It doesn't even try to connect, error 8008007e just pops up emidiatly when I press "log in". It worked perfect before I installed SP1, and I don't think there is a problem with my firewall.

Hi -

Error code 0x8007007e = ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND

Re-install Windows Live. If the current install is corrupted, it should offer "repair" when you install. Otherwise, allow it to install.
