Inspiron 24 5459 AIO fan noise and speed control

Q: Inspiron 24 5459 AIO fan noise and speed control

Hi,
I just bought a Inpiron 24 5459 AIO and noticed the fan is quite noisy. The fan seems to always spin at high speed regardless CPU temperature. Does this model supports fan speed PWM? Or maybe my unit is defective?

Thanks,

Jack

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have tried EVERYTHING to get manual control of the fans and haven't been able to reliably control them. Tried Speedfan, HWinfo, the bios, etc. and can't get PWM control or to setup my own fan control curve.
The laptop bottom  is running too warm for my taste at low workloads which is inconvenient when using it in my lap and I just want to turn on the fans instead of having them off.
Can anyone help out?

Hi all,
I am looking to upgrade my ram from 4GB to 8GB. I downloaded an app called CPU-Z to check the RAM specs. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5459 (Not vostro)

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 14 5459, core i7, 4GB RAM,
The laptop runs Ubuntu GNOME 17.04.
I always used to get random full freezes and I had to do a forced shutdown.
Most of the times the laptop doesn't turn on, the screen is blank and the power indicator flashes like so:
Two times Orange and four times White. This keeps on going until I turn off the laptop.
I had to wait a while (maybe half a hour) only then it will turn on normally.
Recently, when the laptop froze, I couldn't turn it on even after 12 hours (happened at night, tired to turn on in the morning), I waited for 40 minutes - 1 hour but it still didn't turn on, the power indicator kept on flashing.
So I tried to do a hard reset by removing the AC adapter, battery and the button cell and I pressed and hold the power button for 1 minute or so.
After putting back all the things and when I tried to turn it on, the laptop still shows a blank screen, but the fan goes full speed and the power indicator flashes two times orange and four times white. I tried may ways like AC power only or battery powered only but ended up with the same result.
Can someone tell me what the flashing power indicator means? And how to fix it?
Thanks!

The system LED on this system is not a diagnostics indicator. What is the status of the CAPS Lock, when you press it when the system power light is flashing? Can you try to run the on-board diagnostics <F12> or boot into the BIOS <F2>?

Could you please help me with this situation? What can I do? Fyi I have run the diagnostics and did not found any error.
Thank you for you support

A:Dell Inspiron 14 5459 suddenly black screen and shut down

Hi ZADRIANARDI,
Does this happen with or without the adapter connected? What applications are using when the display goes blank? Is the mouse cursor still seen and active when the display goes blank? Does the system overheat? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/28V3xvh - and reinstall the chipset drivers and video drivers from the same site and check if it works fine.
If the issue is still unresolved, then connect an external monitor and check if display goes blank on the external monitor and the LCD.
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - do not make any changes here - leave the system in BIOS environment for as long as possible with the adapter connected  and see if the display goes blank while in BIOS.

Resolution: Dell Inspiron 5459/5559/5759 BIOS Update - Will not boot after update
"No boot drive found", "PXE... Media test failure"
If you updated from 1.0.x to 1.1.5 (or other) and find yourself scratching your head in a panic that your system won't boot up, reboot and press and hold the F2 key when you see the Dell logo (shortly after restart). When the bios settings page opens, click restore settings to default, save, and then exit. Your system should boot to windows now :-)
If you don't care about default Keyboard LED brightness or Fn Lock key default status, disregard the following:
After your system restarts into windows, restart and repeat to enter bios. There are some minor settings that change -- They are minor and don't affect performance.  Under System Configuration, Keyboard brightness changes from dim to bright. Under Post Boot, Fn lock key changes to unlocked.
Have a nice day. Hopefully if you're reading this you already figured that out on your own.

Are you using an original Dell Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible? Could you check this adapter on another system if possible? When you press the power button on the system, do you see any leds come on atleast for a second or two? Does the light on the adapter stay on and stable when connected to the system or does it go off?

I recently updated my Inspiron 14" 5459 to the Windows 10 anniversary update, i noticed that when my wifi access point changes or wifi signal drops or turning off wifi, my laptop semi-freezes, you could still scroll with the mouse or track pad and select open tabs but that's all, clicking other icons and even the windows start menu does not work, if you wait for more than 5 minutes, everything goes back to normal. Waiting around for about 5 minutes is annoying so what I do is press ctrl alt delete and from there restart the laptop. my wifi adapter is updated to the most recent version and also both graphics card (intel hd 520 and amd radeon m335) is also updated to the latest version.  Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

A:after Windows 10 anniversary update, Inspiron 5459 freezes if wifi is turned off or wifi access point is changed, is there a solution to this problem?

Please confirm the wireless card from the device manger or the network control panel. Also please update the BIOS firmware to the latest version. The BIOS update should ideally be version v1.2.2. Also please try system out with  a LAN cable as well to confirm if is indeed caused by the wireless. Though this may not run a complete diagnostics on the network you can run a hardware diagnostics on the computer using the following steps

Shutdown the computer
Hold the 'Fn' key and turn on the computer
Let go of the 'Fn' key after 2 seconds

This is will initiate the H/w diagnostics. Please let us know if it completes or if  you run into any errors. If  you do run into any errors.

Every other machine has a thread complaining about fan noise so I thought I'd create one for the E5440 too
I've had my E5440 for about 3 months and generally happy with it.  Most annoying aspect however is fan control and noise in casual use.
I've used some software to track temps and the fan speed.  I can see by default the fan is completely off while temps rise over ~12 minutes.  Then the fan cuts in at 3000rpm and drones on for ~12 minutes.  All temperatures fall back to their baseline after ~6 minutes but the fan keeps going for no obvious reason.
Fan off:

Fan on:

Considering this machine has a 4th generation i5 rated at only 15W I didn't expect the fan to be running half the time at a minimum of 3000rpm!  Especially when the CPU is idling.
My old 2008 HP machine has an old Core 2 Duo chip rated at a huge 65W and yet in casual use the fan spins constantly and quietly at ~1000rpm and rarely ramps up at all.
It seems that the calibration for casual use is off.  The HP method of keeping the fan spinning slowly at all times is much more desirable than alternating between 12 minutes silence and 12 minutes of droning noise.
Note: I updated to the latest BIOS A07 last week with no notiable improvement in fan control. The BIOS seems to have no fan control options.
I was hoping to use SpeedFan software to control the fan myself but although it can monitor fan speed it can't gain control.

A:E5440 Fan Speed and Noise

Also worth noting from the graphs:
It only takes ~2 minutes of fan running to reduce all the temps to with 2/3 degrees of their baseline.  The additional 10 minutes (!) of fan only reduces temps by that final couple of degrees.
It seems rather pointless to reach those lower levels as within a minute of the fan switching off the CPU temps are all back up 2/3 degrees.
Also, within 4/5 minutes the temps are all within ~5 degrees of peak, where the BIOS is happy to leave them.  Even a simple switch to 2 minutes of fan alternating with 10 minutes of silence would be a vast improvement without making the chassis much hotter.
I understand Dell engineers have to be quite cautious in calibrating things but making a business machine quiet in casual use in a 20C room should be the number one scenario to target.  I can't imagine using the built-in microphone for Skype teleconferencing as I would be shouting over the fan noise half the time!

Hello - I just received my XPS 8920 SE and had a question about fan speeds and noise. At idle, the fans on my RX 580 are noticeable, spinning at around 540rpm, with GPU temp sitting around 50-53c. The i5 7400 also idles around 42C. Both seem a bit hot for idle temps.
Room temperature is 20c. What are you guys seeing for idle temps and fan noise? I've tried adjusted the GPU fan speed with the AMD control center, yet can't bring the fans below 540rpm.Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm not satisfied with fan behavior on my YOGA 500-15ISK. (i7-6500U / 8GB DDR3 / SSD 256GB / nVidia 940M) In the evening in quiet room it is very noisy. Fan speed very often jumps from 0% speed to higher even with no significantly cpu load or my pc activity and after some time (sometimes the fan does go off after few seconds, sometimes after minutes...) it jumps back to 0% and again and again.. randomly. It happens all the time, also I formated system and tried clean win10 instalation with all up to date drivers. But still same behavior. I can't see any reason why when I browse web through Chrome, watch videos, work with folders and files -> all in 2D, I have to listen this alternating louder and softer fan speed noise. Core temp software shows CPU temperature around 40C.  My old HP laptop without ssd is much quiter in 2D than this YOGA 500-15ISK. I much rather prefer constant slight noise than this constant turning on and off fan noise. It looks it is standard behavior on the Yoga laptops because of fan speed level setings, and most of Yoga users don't care, maybe can't hear that or just don't bother about that speed jumps. Or it could be some hw or sw problem? Hi,
I have had my 7775 AIO for just over a week now and getting concerned with the amount the fan is running. The system is as follows:
AMD Ryzen™ 7 1700 Processor (8C/16T, 20MB Cache, 3.7 GHz Precision Boost)
Windows 10 Home (64Bit) Multi-Language English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Spanish
16GB DDR4 2400MHz up to 32GB(additional memory sold separately)
1TB 5.4k HDD + 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD
AMD Radeon RX580 8GB GDDR5 (R17M-E1-90)
So, a nice system with some high-end components...however. The fan seems to kick in at the drop of a hat, I don't mean when I am running a game. It kicks in when I open Chrome up to do a bit of browsing or open Word up to edit a document, not exactly things that should be taxing the CPU. I have monitored Task Manager and CPU usage is normally about 1-3% and Memory constantly sits at about 25%.
I have checked the temperature with HWINFO and it is sitting between 55c-60C when idle and no programs running. I am not an expert on this CPU but that seems a bit high for idle?
Given the idle temp I am assuming the fan should be kicking in so I suppose my question is......Is there potentially an issue with the CPU (diagnostics say no) or is it just a system that runs hot and I should expect a lot of noise.
If it is fan happy then I might send it back because having come from a silent iMac I am not liking being in the room with a helicopter.
Thanks
Graham

Ok, so I bought my Inspiron about 2 months ago, but it has started to make weird noises coming from the fan. And they drive me insane.
Initially, I tough it was the hard drive and now I have a brand new hard drive brought to me by DELL, but after more examination there is no doubt that it is the fan.
Here are the details:

- the clicking can be heard only when the fans are on, and most notably when they are going slower
- the clicks are pretty inconsistent with each other and appear at random times
- the clicking disappears if I stop the fans with a program
- the clicking kinda disappears if I flip the notebook 360%

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/720057-harddrive-fan-making-rapid-clicking.html - I believe that this guy has a similar problem

My question is - should I begin the dreadful process of contacting dell again, or do you, like me, think that it is a cable or something and that I should open the fan?

By the way, when I was opening to see my HDD there was 1 screw missing, so there is some doubt in my mind that the laptop wasn't assembled very thoroughly.

For some reason, my computer frequently produces a loud fan noise when I am using it. For the majority of the time, it is silent. However, there are often times when I don't even have many webpages open but it grows louder. There are two levels of loud (the second level is so loud that it can draw attention from people sitting next to me).
This is only a 2 month old laptop, so I am unsure why it gets loud. Also, I have 12gb RAM, which adds to my confusion.
Any suggestions or reasoning? Thanks!

Hi mcharfi,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.
I understand the situation. May I know if you experience the system overheating? Please clean the air vents & check if it helps. Also update BIOS & check. Click on the link below, enter the system service tag and click Submit. Select the Operating system from the drop down list to get drivers for your system model:

Let me know if this helps.

I just received an Insprion 13 7378 and the fan is making alot of noise. I have updated the BIOS, made sure that the vents are not covered and updated all drivers.
Any suggestions?

Fan noise is very subjective. Post a video allowing us to hear this noise. The video should show the windows desktop, windows safemode desktop, then boot into the bios.

I mainly use firefox, I have windows xp professional and service pack 3 if that is helpful info or not. Also, I have ran SUPER AntiSpyware & Malwarebytes' but it did not detect anything. I tried to run GMER program but it tends to freeze when I try to save the log, and it happened twice. Also a pop up of making IE default browser pops up randomly even if i click no. Can someone suggest what I can do? Please and thank you before hand. It is truly and greatly appreciated. Hi everyone, as the title reads, I have a Dell Inspiron N7110 laptop. I have had it for about 8 months or so, and it has served me well. However, last night after watching a movie, I noticed my fan (I think its my fan) is making alot of extra noise and vibrations when I put my hand over the top left corner of the keyboard.
I shut it down, and started it back up and the noise continued. I turned it off and left it for the night. When I started it up this morning, all was well, for about 5 minutes or so. Then the noise started again, and it will not stop. My laptop does not feel warm, and the performance does not appear to be affected. I came to the dell website and ran a full system diagnostic and everything came up good.
Does anyone know what might be the problem, and what I could do to correct it without having to take it for repairs if possible?
Thanks in advance!

If the system is not getting hot, but the fans are going like crazy -- that probably means that it thinks it is getting hot.  Try updating the BIOS (go to support.dell.com).  To find the current BIOS, go to msinfo32.  If the fan is just loose or vibrating, try reseating it.  If you need instructions on that, find the service manual for it.
