compaq presario cq56 notebook

Q: compaq presario cq56 notebook

When I turned on my laptop this evening, it would not boot up. I got a message to press the esc button, but when I did that nothing happened. This happened once before last year, and I was told that the f12 light was red so it was locked up. How do I unlock the computer so I can use it. It has Windows 10 Pro installed on it, and works fine normally. Could someone tell me what the procedure is to get the laptop to boot up now? Thankyou!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you are lucky the original recovery partition is still intact see the tutorial here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418 If the HP recovery does not work you would have to get your hands on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM disk or a copy of the HP restore disk set for your computer. HP no longer offers it but you can perhaps get it from 3rd party vendors. www.computersurgeons.com www.restoredisks.com What upgrades had you thought about doing?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX Notebook PC and lately I have been having problems with the computer. When I turn it on the screen is blank, and it seems like it doesn't log into Windows (because when it goes into Windows it usually makes the welcome noise) the Capslock light flashes, the CD drive works, the wireless light is red, on the left side in one of the USB ports it has a small light that flickers a bit and then stops after I turn on the computer. The laptop battery works, the AC adapter works (the light where the adapter connects to turns on when I connect it), I tried doing the thing where you take out the battery and disconnect the adapter and turn on the So everything works except the screen is blank, I connected another monitor to see if it's the GPU that's bad or my laptop's monitor, but my other computer's monitor doesn't detect anything which leads me to believe it's not my laptop's screen but something else. Here's the other thing though sometimes when I turn on the laptop the screen does show up and everything goes in like normal (the orange screen with the COMPAQ logo comes up, the Windows logo, etc...) but when I turn it off and then try to turn it back again the screen is blank, and I turn it off and on again several times until the computer decides to work normally. Right now I'm in my CQ56-115DX Notebook PC and I haven't really done anything to it and I am afraid to turn it off again because I feel like it's not going to work anymore (especially sin... Hopefully I posted in the right section. But anyways I will be as detailed as possible. Currently I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 115dx running Wins7 out of factory. One day I was using my computer perfectly fine, everything normal and running great. I decide to close the lid to put it to sleep.

I come back later to find that it didn't actually sleep and was just stuck there. This has happened before and I would just turn off the computer and it would be fine. But recently I did and it is now stuck at bootup. The caps locks blinks 1 time, which corresponds to CPU not functioning I believe. I reseated harddrive and ram, didn't do much.

Then randomly as I am trying to get it to boot by turning it on and off, waited a few and it booted up normally. Perfect. Then I decided to shut it down instead of putting it to sleep just to find later when trying to get on, its back to the problem.

Any help would be appreciated on how to prevent this without any major repair work.

As the title states, I have a cq56-219wm. The LED code leads me to believe that the cpu has died. However, I have already replaced it with a new one and still am getting the same code with no boot up. I have tried the power reset by holding the power button for one minute and still nothing. The fans are functional as well. My question is, what would the next step be for this laptop repair and will it be worth it on a 2 year old machine? Thanks in advance.

A:Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM No Boot

Unless you can find something not connected back correctly (few will repair a laptop's hardware due to fragility) then I'd RMA the CPU to try another one. If the LED blinking code is consistent they should take it as proof it is not working and replace it.

Most new hardware has a year's tech support so you might even get them to help you go over it in advance of an RMA, which is the best way to set one up anyway.

good day all,

for christmas yesterday i recieved a replacement laptop as a gift it is a compaq presario cq56 and it works great my only problem is that my media player key on my left side of my keyboard runs cyberdvd player, i removed this and installed vlc as i prefer that for my media viewing and now i am unable to run my media player through the keyboard shortcuts.

i have set file associations inside vlc
i have tried to set vlc as my default program using the default programs and features menu but couldnt find vlc player only options were current, windows media centre and windows media player, selecting either of the windows options and clicking on ok resulted in the option being reset to my current one
i cant seem to find a program installed on the machine that allows me to customize my keyboard shortcuts but the laptop was preowned but reconditioned, i have searched for a program but i can not find one for my opearating system (windows 7 home preimum)
there isnt a option to configure the shortcuts in the keyboard section of control panel
and as a last resort i tried to change the fill association that is in the registry location relating to the appkey (the value is 16 and the default file association was .CDA i changed this to .mp3 hoping that that would allow me to load vlc player as default but it didnt work)
i attempted to set the vlc media player shortcut on the desktop to the media key but it wouldnt allow it, windows refused to change the box from non... Read more

Hello Hard Disk 1 Full (305) Hi, The 305 error would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced and get a set of recovery disk from HP , this would resolve the issue, its not the hacker, its the hdd that is failing because of which you got black screen #hpexpertday

My compaq presario cq56 laptop has been connected, via wireless, to our home broadband network for ages, but suddenly it's not working. A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark has appeared over the bars of the internet symbol in the system tray, and it tells me it's connected, but that there's no internet access.
All the other computers on the network are fine (one laptop, connected wirelessly,. and a desktop connected via cable). I have called TalkTalk and they have checked the connection, concluding that its fine. I have also been in contact with the manufacturer of our router (Belkin). After changing lots of settings around, they told me it must be an issue with the network adapter (?) on my laptop. I can't actually find any support from Compaq/HP themselves. Please help!!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

Hi Guys. I'm new to this so, sorry if i post it wrong?

Well, Last night, my laptop totally froze. No mouse movement. Screen froze. Everything. The only way to get round this was to disconnect any power to the laptop and remove the battery. That solved my 1st Problem. However, once i tried to reboot the system, All i got was a black screen with flashing Caps lock light OR in some cases it begins to start up however, at the ''Starting Windows screen'' It goes black and stays black.

Erm, i really love my laptop so if anyone has any suggestions to fix this.. or if i've posted it in the wrong section i apologize i just need a fix :(

Hey Techspotters.

I recently acquired a new Compaq Presario CQ56-101SA notebook with a 2 year warranty. Problem is after two weeks the display appeared with vertical and horizontal white lines and in the top left hand corner a bright white and blue 'blobbed' image appeared and has gotten bigger from top left heading to bottom right. I immediately informed Compaq/HP who arranged to have my laptop collected and sent for repair under warranty. I subsequently received a call from HP Engineering Dept that the LCD screen had been cracked inside (there is no physical external damage) due to undue pressure or 'knock' to the screen and that it was deemed as accidental damage and not covered under warranty! Now I can categorically say that to my knowledge, nothing untoward has happened to this laptop (it is 2 weeks old!!). I open it and then I close it and it has had normal use for the 2 weeks that i have had it. HP wanted 199 to fix it or alternatively return it free of charge unfixed. No amount of persuasive talk from me would change her mind so I opted to have the notebook returned to me. Now I could fix this as a new LCD screen is relatively cheap to purchase (50-70 online) but I fear that if I do this, it will invalidate my 2 year warranty.

Has anyone else had any similar issues with Compaq and HP notebooks or have I just been extremely unlucky here and suffered a 'night gremlin notebook attack'.

I would very much appreciate advice on w... Read more

I've had to install a new lcd screen in a toshiba about 3 years ago. I was very careful to not leave striped screws or scratched paint near any of the screw holes. a year later my hdd died and my laptop was still under warranty( extended which i purchased) and they installed a new hdd.

That was a few years ago and a different company. I'm not sure about other experiences, but in mine I believe since I didn't visibly damage anything they couldn't have known if I opened it or not at any time.

Got a problem with a compaq presario CQ56, in that whenever I log on to my main profile, it will start normally, and the desktop and icons will appear for a second, after which all the icons disappear and a few seconds later, so does the background, leaving me with a blank white screen. All the programs seem to work fine though, just "underneath" the white screen, as when I ctrl+alt+del, it returns to how it should be untilI perform an action

So far I've tried restarts, full shutdowns, emergency shutdowns(battery removal), switching users back and forth just about everything from taking it apart, which I don't think needs to be done

Any and all help would be appreciated

Hi all,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit (Windows 7 Home Premium) laptop that I bought before the summer, today a Windows Update has given me an Acer display update published on the 28/12/2011. I thought because I had my vga cable plugged into the TV Windows Update may have become confused but despite checking for updates again it still appears there as optional.

AMD/ATI is recognized by Windows and Windows Update and there had already been a display driver update not so long ago, so I cannnot understand why I'm receiving an update for the wrong machine?

A:Acer - Display - ACER S271HL update on Compaq Presario CQ56 64-Bit

Not actually for AMD/ATI almost monthly you can see a newer update become available and that's why you will see one listed as an optional hardware update for the integrated graphic chips on the laptop.

Since Windows detects the tv you are using as an external monitor that also becomes a detected hardware. If that happens to be an Acer brand tv that would explain why that particular update came about.

My Presario CQ60 is quite old, but still works great, but the operating system and Office needs to be upgraded.   Currently running under Windows VISTA (Basic), and Windows Live Essentials 2011.  I would like to upgrade the operating system (VISTA) to one of the later versions of Windows, and would like to upgrade to a more modern version of Microsoft Office which includes MS Outlook as the email manager. Any help in how to determine which programs can run on this model laptop is appreciated. Tomja2 in Kinsale, VA

A:Upgrade of a Compaq Presario Notebook

@Tomja2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! There are two kinds of "upgrades" to newer versions of Windows -- one with an Upgrade Path, and others without. The Upgrade Path means that when you upgrade the OS, you can retain your settings, personal data, and applications.  This is only offered (historically) from one OS version to the next.  So, in your case, that means it only works upgrading Vista to Win7. Without an Upgrade Path, you would only upgrade the OS components.  You would have to redo all your settings, restore all your personal data, and reinstall all your applications.  Anything newer than Win7 is going to be this kind of Upgrade, basically a whole new installation of Windows. As to Win8, your best bet there would be Win8.1 -- if you can find it, as that introduced a lot of improvements over Win8.  But, MS also removed the Start Menu, starting with Win8.  So, if you decide on Win8.1, I strongly recommend you then consider installing a third-party Start Menu.  And finally, I would advise very strongly against trying to upgrade to Win10.  HP does not provide any Win10 drivers for your PC, and without those, you are stuck with the generic drivers Microsoft will install, and most likely, that will mean that one of more of your hardware devices are not going to functional properly. As to the specific programs, your best bet is to visit any support forums for the programs you are ru... Hi, all. I always turn to you guys for help as I'm only a newbie. I have a two weeks old Compaq Presario R3240US with 512 ram & 60gig.

I was installing a bunch of programs and all of a sudden, I got the "A necessary component for this function is missing or damaged (c:\symantec antivirus\novapw32.dll)". Then the system alerted me to antivirus protection not being on then eventually firewall protection not being on as well without disabling them from my end. Last program I installed before all this hassel was the "Norton antivirus corporate ed.(?)" and I ended virus scan before it was completed because it took so long. I did have the regular Norton antivirus on my system but wanted to upgrade to corporate version thinking it was better. I tried to uninstall them but I can't even open 'remove program' from my control panel. As matter of fact, I can't open anything! I rebooted it up by taking the battery out so I could even reboot but it didn't help. I was able to access a few app on my numerous reboots (when I could've) but very limited. Semantec(norton) did take me to a webpage where they described how to check for virus. My computer couldn't even do that. Something about active x(?) and even when I said to install, it didn't help any. Then it said to uninstall and install again which I couldn't accomplish either. I did check for virus with norton antivirus cd 'emergency' check while booting u... Read more

I tried to install windows onto my laptop. It went through the set up process, but when it got to the install part, I got an error message stating that Windows could not find a HDD installed on my computer. So, thinking something was wrong with the HDD, I bought a new Wester Digital HDD. After installing the new HDD, I again tried installing windows, with the same outcome. Someone has told me that Compaq is bad about putting "blinder" codes in their BIOS to hide the HDD from being overwritten. I called Compaq Tech Support, but because my warranty is out, they wanted an arm and a leg to "help". Is there any truth to this? Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

A:Replacing HDD in Compaq Presario Notebook

If this is a SATA hard drive, you need to install SATA controller drivers at the F6 prompt. Since this procedure needs a floppy drive and you probably don't have one, go into the BIOS and see if you can change the controller from SATA or AHCI mode to IDE mode. If have this option, then Setup should continue.

Hi Everyone,  please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.

A:Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC

I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?

Alright. Please, somebody help me. This is just plain annoying. I have a Compaq Notebook Presario 2402 US that I got recently. It came preinstalled with XP Home. I wanted to format and instead install XP Pro from a CD that I have already.

Surprise, surprise. The dang laptop won't boot from the XP Pro cd but boots up fine with the recovery XP Home cd that it comes with.

I read somewhere that Compaq and HP block the computer from reading other OS's. Don't know why.

The question is, how do I unlock it?

I don't want to install XP Home and then upgrade to XP Pro.
Checked Bios. It is the latest version.

Someone please help.

OK. I reinstalled XP Home. Tried to upgrade to Pro. Won't let me. Stupid.

Hi All,

Discovered the forum whilst troubleshooting a BSOD i keep getting on my notebook.

I don't have any specifics other than the dump file attached as this is a shared notebook and all users get the bsod which then requires a manual power cycle to log back on.

I have run the hp diagnostics utility using F2 at startup and all tests passed.

All assistance is much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hello. I just recently bought a compaq presario cq57 laptop from a friend. And I was told right after I paid for it that my friend couldn't remember the password so therefore couldn't get into it. Thus I too can't get into it and am totally locked out.It barely starts to boot up after turningit on when it almost immediately goes to the screen saying/asking for a password. And every time after 3 failed attempts it says disabled and gives me a special number code to go with it. The disabled code that it gives me every time is  -  disabled  69374099. Is there anyone out there that can give me the real/right password to put in especially one that matches up with the disabled number code error that it keeps giving me. Thank you all very very much. I really do appreciate it a lot. Sincerely, Thumper7771976

Hello, I am currently studying to become a computer repair technician, and as hands-on practice I would like to take a look at  an old computer of mine. Before i do so i would like to know the specs of the computer (Compaq Presario A909US Notebook PC), but since I haven't seen the charger in years, I cannot access my computer's specs through windows. I am wondering if anyone knows or can help me find the specs before i open it up.

The last driver I installed was Conexant AC-Link Audio.[2]-I can't even go to a previous Restore Point because I get the "Restoration Incomplete" message.[3]-In Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers, there is no Conexant AC-Link Audio listed. A:No sound from Compaq Presario v5000 Notebook

Problem solved--sound is back. In Control Panel>>...>>Sound and Audio Devices Properties>>Audio tab Default device was "Modem #0 Line Playback". I clicked on the expandable arrow and there was "Conexant AMC Audio".  When I selected this one, all the grayed -out buttons became accessible and my sound came back.

I have a Compaq Presario 1500 that overheats and shutsdown after a few minutes (approxmately 15 -20 minutes). Smart has detected that my hard drive is failing and I also have a DVD/CD-RW combo drive that reads CDs periodically. I don't know if this relates to the overheating at all.

Processor P4 1.8 Ghz
