USB driver is not associated if device descriptor contains additional interface

Q: USB driver is not associated if device descriptor contains additional interface

Hi,
I have an USB device (an embedded system that I am developing) and associated driver.
It has one interface with two endpoints (BULK IN and BULK OUT) and control endpoint.
When I connect that USB device to PC, then device driver is getting associated with device and I am able to use the device.

Now I have updated USB device descriptor to have one more interface (all other information like VID, PID are same and also existing interface is not altered). Now it has: one control endpoint, one interface with BULK IN and BULK OUT and another interface
with BULK IN endpoint.

When I connect this USB device with modified device descriptor, USB driver is not getting associated and giving me error code: 10 (0xA).

Device driver software is from 3rd party.

Now I am not sure if error is thrown by windows kernel or device software.
Please help me in debugging this.

Any log files/events that can be enabled when device is connected and how driver is loaded, what checks are performed by kernel to load the driver etc (I believe it only looks at VID and PID).

FYI: Same setup works on Linux environment (looks liek linux just ignores this additional interface added)

Rgds,
Venkat.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name
of the USB port should be (I imagine it woul... Read more

Hi onyx,
This error means a device driver notified the operating system that the device failed. This circumstance can occur if the device hardware fails or if the device driver fails.
Have you tried to update the device driver for test?

I was just working happily when my Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse just suddenly stopped working.
The Bluetooth settings page says "Bluetooth is turned off" and there are no options on the settings page or the system tray to turn Bluetooth on.
The Device Manager now has "Unknown USB device - device descriptor request failed" where it did not before.
Other devices all seem to be working fine - USB devices plugged in are being recognized and work properly. Only BT seems to be broken.
I've tried:
uninstalling the device and rebooting
installing the latest updated chipset drivers from the dell website
windows updates
pretty much all of the advice here: http ://troubleshooter.xyz/wiki/fix-usb-device-not-recognized-device-descriptor-request-failed

Any other ideas?
Thanks

A:XPS 15 9550 Bluetooth stopped working (Unknown USB device - device descriptor request failed)

So in desperation I just went into BIOS settings to see if there are any BT settings that may have become disabled. I didn't see any, and I didn't change any other settings.
After rebooting, BT and my mouse is now working again.
Something seems to be really flaky here, but hopefully this will help others with the same issue.

Hello, ok so after recently doing a clean install of windows 10(please don't get me started on that mess). my system has been plagued by random usb drops. it's where everything connected via USB suddenly disconnects then reconnects out of the blue. well I was using a Rosewill Transenclosure RX200R-APU-25B USB 3.0 dual 2.5 hard drive enclosure and transferring files from one drive to another (connected via USB) when one of these drops occurred. Now whenever I plug in my hard drive enclosure in a windows warning pops up and says "the USB drive that was just connected Malfunctioned and could not be installed" and in system manager it says "Unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". I know it's not the hard drives because I can remove them and use another connection and they work fine, all files intact. It's just now my hard drive enclosure won't recognize. This also happened to a "Loot crate exclusive Game of Thrones stark sigil 4GB USB stick I plugged in and turned into a windows 10 install drive. Fresh install of Windows 10 and the last driver I need to sort out is the above.

I believe it is my powered USB 3 hub to which I plug in my keyboard and mouse. Technically it is working but I don't like seeing yellow triangles on devices.

So are there any fixes?

A:Unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed)

If it's a generic USB 2.0 Powered Hub then technically there's should be no drivers needed by Windows, if it's a USB 3.0 Hub then I'm unsure (since I don't own any USB 3.0 Hubs).

Might be a Windows bug, basically Windows can't find the description information to display the Hub's name in the Device Manager example: Generic USB Hub, Root Hub Device, etc....

I'm pretty sure everything is working as should, you're good minus the minor annoyance if all device connected through the USB Hub is recognized by Windows; if you right click Properties on the yellow triangle it probably says "The Device is working properly".

You can try going into device manager > select show hidden devices and delete all "inactive" usb device appearances. In my example below, there would be four. Once done, reboot and try your device again:

Hello,  I seem to be having an issue with my Thinkpad T470p. I've had it for about a year and a few months ago, all the 3 USB ports stopped working and so did the integrated camera. It would work at times and then stop working. For the past 2 weeks, everything has completely failed. So far I've done the following: -I've reset the BIOS to default settings and still there is no change.-The USB ports are enabled in BIOS settings as well. -Fast startup is diabled-The autosuspend for USB devices has been disabled in the power settings as well-All drivers have been updated using the Lenovo System Updates-This is a fresh install of Windows 10 so there is no previous state that I can go back to. (It wasn't working when I was running Ubuntu either even with all the right drivers installed.)-Troubleshooting cannot seem to find a fix for the error either One weird thing though is that my WD Elemnts HDD works fine when plugged in to any of the USB ports but other than that nothing else works. Any and all help will be much appreciated. My warranty expired just before these issues started so I don't really think I can get it repaired by Lenovo services.

I know that a similar question has been asked before but, not with the last part of the message, (Device Descriptor Request Failed). I get this, in Device Manager, and I have searched for an answer on the net. Also it is a Code 43. I went through my laptop, with an HP Technician this morning, I might add at a cost of 5p/minute, for 30 odd minutes. He has said that because I had gone over to Windows 8.1 and the recovery discs I made will not load, to put back in Windows 8. I have to send the laptop back for re-installing the OS, because Windows 8.1 do not have the update for my problem. Also the R.H. USB socket has a failure ID:0GAPTK-6T7716-MFPWWK-8D1Q03. I personally think that this is all what the problem is. a duff USB. Is this a cop-out???
My question is; has anyone heard of Windows 8.1 having driver WHQL problems?? Very.

Any/all ideas, appreciated.

ps, I only found out the problem with the usb when I tried to download a Mobi file to a Kindle for my wife. The other usb's work OK.

A:Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Is there only one USB port on the right hand side? Sometimes manufacturers connect internal devices via an unused USB port internally. USB ports are usually in groups of two, seeing only one port is usually a sign that the wiring has been redirected internally to something else like a Bluetooth adapter or wifi adapter. It may even be a card reader or touchpad. Is anything like that not working? If it is start looking for a driver for it.

Hello everyone,
i hope you can help me sorting out this issue that is causing me a hard headache at the moment.

I've bought this new Lenovo Z50-70 laptop with windows 8.1 preinstalled on it. Fresh new.

I'm trying to connect via usb a guitar audio interface (Line6 POD HD500) so i installed the drivers via the .exe setup file i downloaded from Line6's site.
The device worked fine on my previous HP pavilion with windows 7.

Now when i completed the installation, i connected it and i had this error:Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I used slimdrivers to update all the other drivers, in case it was a conflict causing the error.
I checked via command prompt with command "pnputil -e" and i saw a driver from the vendor of the device listed, so it is installed correctly i think.
I tried all USB ports i have, 3.0 and 2.0 on one side of laptop and 2.0 on other side.

When on device manager, if i click update drivers and choose the "let me pick from a list of device drivers.." i don't see the company name of the device.

i saw that another guy posted a really similar problem on SevenForum and he figured out how to force windows to use the drivers but he didn't post the solution.. Here is the post: Can't get Windows 7 x64 to use the drivers I've installed repeatedly Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

Most of the threads on this error are old, (2015) so I am starting a new one. I only notice it when I happen to be in the device manager. I have no problems with any of my connected USB devices (that I have observed).

I have tried uninstalling it, and rescanning and it pops up again, so apparently it is something that is connected. Without disconnecting All of my USB devices one at a time (which I am wont to do, as it is not bothering me, other than that it is there!) It has been there for quite a while, so apparently is not anything new being connected.

Is there no way to identify WHAT is connected to this port, or even what port it is?

BTW, it only shows up in the USB Controller section, no matching errors in any of the devices themselves!

Curiouser and curiouser...

I have a flash drive that I previously used in public computer lab (where many viruses linger) the other day to do my work. As I got home, the flash drive isn't working anymore, saying "USB Device not Recognized". I also noticed that it really took me a while to finally, safely remove it from the computer lab's PC. So I actually wonder if it actually removed my flash drive properly.

On Device Manager, it says "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".
On the Properties, the device status says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) -- A request for the USB device descriptor failed."

My flash drive is a Kingston Flash Drive DataTraveler (DT100) 16GB, and my PC is running on Windows 8.1.

Things I have tried:

A:USB not recognized (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

if you have tried on other systems using different OS then the error is normally because of issues with the item not the PC , it might be 'confused' or have corrupted data or be faulty.

If you have the data still stored elsewhere...then you may be able to reset the flash drive and see if it recognises it then.

I'm not sure if there is a reset switch anywhere on that stick.

Hi all,

(Unknown USB Device - A request for the USB device descriptor failed)

Massive problem I have encountered since buying a new laptop pre-installed with Windows 8.1

I have 3 external USB storage devices - 1x Corsair "Slider" 64GB, 1x HiTachi Touro 750GB, & 1x HiTachi 4TB external drive. ALL drives are coming up with the same error message and are not being recognized by Windows 8.1

The strange thing is, I also have another 2 PCs - one with Win7 and one with WinXP and the drives work without issue.

I've spent the last 4 days scouring the net looking for answers, and thus I am here hoping someone can shed some light as to why ALL of these drives do not work on this new laptop pre-installed with Windows 8.1?

Even stranger still is I have other thumb drives, a cheap Transcend 32GB (which is USB3.0) and a few cheapo (USB2.0) drives of various sizes by Strontium, Lexar and so on which work perfectly.

But the one that has me o.O is an expensive 64GB thumb drive called the Mach Extreme which also works perfectly with this laptop???

So all up 2x HiTachi drives & 1x Corsair thumb drive are not working and its driving me bonkers!

If no drives worked at all, then I would be seeking the manufacturer for maybe a faulty component. Dodgy USB ports, or maybe a motherboard problem. But having a handfull of drives, of various makes, sizes and both USB3.0 - 2.0 fully working leaves me scratching the old chrome dome as to what could be the issue

You can mark this thread as SOLVED!

Okay here's the fix that worked for me, maybe it will work for you.

I've always updated drivers, WinXP, Win7 and so on, the same way - download the driver, go into device manager and select browse, then point windows to the downloaded driver to update the necessary files. Its always worked that way for me for as long as I can remember.

Not so it appears with windows 8 - for some strang reason.

For me I had to update to the latest Intel Chipset Drivers, but instead of the tried and trusted methos above, you simply hit the setup.exe and let windows 8 do its thing. Believe it or not, but this fixed the issue.

Yes I had already updatd to the latest Intel Chipset Drivers using the device manager method, and yes windows "did" update ...someting??? But the USB devices were still showing the Unknown USB Device error. But using the setup.exe fixed the everything and all my USB devices are now working perfectly with Windows 8.

How, why, who knows, but I hope this works for others with the same problem.

I've used MMA to develop a USB device before and was able to look at the raw data in the message view to ensure the correct data was being sent in the descriptors. This does not appear to be showing up any longer. I'm currently using MMA 1.4
When I click the message that shows a USB transaction and scroll to the bottom of the Details window, the DeviceDescriptor is in the list, but it does not show any data and the Message Data window shows: "No Data Source data not available for display"
The UsbLength field clearly indicates that 18 bytes have been transferred and the device is working properly so I know the data was sent. How do I inspect the raw data for the device descriptor?

Hi there slovey  Have you, by any chance tried with another USB cable? I wouldn't make sense to change things as the device works on other systems but it wouldn't hurt to use the other My Book's cable with the problematic one just to rule this out as a potential cause. I would also check this thread and see if the offered solutions there help.  Keeping your OS, BIOS and drivers up to date is also an important part of the troubleshooting process. I'd also check if there's a new update specifically for the driver responsible for the communication between the drive and the system. Post back if you need more info! Captain_WD.

A:Razer Megalodon - (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Razer is well known for BSOD drivers and problems, otherwise. (And taking very old drivers, changing nothing at all, giving it a new date and then claiming "Compatible!" with new OS.)

Perhaps give a shot with uninstalling their software, rebooting, the re-installing.

Make sure using the latest.

When all is said and done, you might just have to live with it.

Can't hurt to make sure chipset drivers are up to date. If Intel chipset, search their driver site for "Inf"

Hello, The left USB socket on my X250 has started to return the message Device Descriptor Request Failed, but the right hand USB works as normal. I rarely used the left hand one so I am unsure for how long this has been the case, but now I am very keen to start using a USB keyboard so I am very keen to get it working again.I have tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling, and searching for new drivers. Thanks in advance for any help,Dave

A:Driver device "Data Interface"

1) just my guess based on the odd names "Data Interface".. Have you downloaded the drivers on Dell support site listed under ControlPoint?

2) Otherwise, since you just bought it might be easiest to just call Dell for support

I have this problem:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

The driver could not be loaded because a previous version of the driver is still in memory.

and now I am not able to connect any usb device to my laptop making it virtually impossible to use windows 10.
How do I downgrade to windows 7,have enough of the beta testing.
I even have a purchased version of windows 10 pro which I really regret buying, worst investment ever.

I have been having an issue with my flash drive being recognized by my laptop computer. When I initially start up my computer, it reads my flash drive. If I take out my flash drive and reinsert it, it no longer reads it. (It still makes the sound the the
computer recognizes it was inserted, but it won't open the drive.) When I go into device manger, it has that yellow exclamation point with this message, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device
driver is still in memory. (Code 38)". My cordless mouse has been working just fine.
I did troubleshooting and it told me to restart the computer. That helps for the first time, but then when I reinsert the flash drive , the problem happens again.
I tried to uninstall the hubs and reinstall but that also doesn't seem to be helping.
Any ideas?

Thanks

So I'm planning to get a second HD for my tower here so I can do the things that i love but also take up space ie 3d modeling and the game art stuff. I lost all of my backups on my laptop but i figured since my tower has a better proc, tons more memory, video power that it would be a more suitable place to do 3d modeling because it is sometimes RAM hungry

Anyways my 250 primary is running low. I just installed PS cs4 because I use it a ton [and for school graphic arts work] and i'm down to 60 gigs

I've never installed another hd before. I wanted to get a basic run down of it.

Correct me if I mess up:

1. get right kind, sata3 drive
2. put in case in rails and connect sata cables to HD and motherboard

then what? Do i install win7 on that too like a fresh install? I wouldn't want the new bigger HD to be boot, just a storage device for like steam, 3d stuff, etc

Thanks

EDIT: my motherboard

No. You wouldn't put Windows on it.

All you need to do is mount it, connect 2 cables to it, partition it, and format it. You'll need to give it a drive letter.

Partitioning, formatting, and drive letter can be done in Windows Disk Management.

Then just put your data on it.

note: sometimes when i trun on my laptop that error is gone mysteriously and most of the times its showing up
note: i recently changed my wireless adapter tho the orginial adapter was a bt/wifi combo but the new one is just a wifi adapter and i have an ssd installed instead of dvd optical drive and both are working well
note: things i already tried: disabling fast boot-updating generic usb drivers-taking out battery for 5 minutes-updating drivers

My machine is fitted with a Toshiba DVD ROM devise that's works fine.
I want to fit a CD writer into the machine also. So far I have tried 3 different brands of CD writers and none will work together with the DVD ROM.
Symptoms are always the machine 'freezes' if I put a disc in either drives (other than the software disc). The writer / reader were wired in all possible different ways - always the same fault. I know that the individual devices worked OK as they would always work in isolation of the other CD / DVD device. Device manager always recognised the peripherals and said they were working OK - Any clues as to what's happening please?
SUCCESS - BUT I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHY!
I FITTED THE BURNER AS A SLAVE TO THE BOOT DRIVE & FITTED THE dvd/CD READER AS MASTER ON THE SECONDARY CONNECTOR ON THE MOTHER BOARD. I STRIPPED ALL THE CD RECORDER SOFTWARE & RELOADED IT. NEXT I TOOK A TIP FROM THE MS WEB SITE (REF; WINDOWS 98 - DUAL CD DEVICES USE THE SAME ADDRESS - CHANGE CONFIG & AUTOEXEC FILE TO GIVE INDIVIDUAL ADDRESSES). FINALLY (& THIS IS WHAT STOPPED IT FALLING OVER EVERY TIME I PUT A CD IN EITHER DRAW) I UNCHECKED THE AUTO START FOR BOTH CD DEVICES IN DEVICE MANAGER THEN REBOOTED.
THANKS TO ALL WHO GAVE ADVICE!!!!!!!!!

A:System crash when additional CD device added

If you bought a two connector cable and got an 80 wire ATA cable I have read that the master has to be on the end connector. I have no idea why this would be true but you might try it if you have ATA wire.

Have you tried the DVD slave to the HD on the primary if it wasn’t that way in the first place? It won’t slow it down.

There was a post with the same symptoms as yours on another board and the end result was that a replacement burner fixed it.

I was following the directions in my Microsoft Fixit Program and deleted a USB drive that was not working, then it goes to tell you how to put in a new one. My computer keeps telling me there is not a newer one. But when I run the device manager and check the status of the USB port, it has a yellow exclamation point with error: This device cannot start (Code 10) I have been to Microsoft help, HP help, Driver supports for both, and still no luck. I am having problems with most all my usb connections now. Can't print. I did notice a mention of bios and to go the the manufacturers web site, which I believe to be Asus, Still nothing. Could someone please help me with this ASAP!!! Thank you, Barbara Tucker email address removed to protect from spambots. ~ OB

A:USB Human Interface Device

Hello -Description of Code 10-related errors from M/soft support -From How To Fix Error Code 10 (This device cannot start) this may be a help to you -Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:•Remove or reconfigure the newly installed device.•Roll back the driver to a version prior to your update.•Use System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes.Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is a likely solution to a Code 10 error.Important: If a USB device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.Note: Properly reinstalling a driver, as in the instructions linked above, is not the same as simply updating a driver. A full driver reinstall involves completely removing the currently installed driver and then letting Windows install it over again from scratch.Advice on several other sites are the same or very similar to the above link -Good Luck -EDIT - Can you try to link the FixIt item here (or at least the page link) so we can check the instructions for you -

Try setting HID to automatic in services..

Start>Run>type in Services.msc

Scroll to HID Input Service, double click on it and make sure it's set to automatic in the start up type option
