Optiplex 980 Sound plays on both internal speaker and attached (external 2.1 speakers)

Q: Optiplex 980 Sound plays on both internal speaker and attached (external 2.1 speakers)

New Dell Optiplex 980 Win. 7 64 bit (SSD) and having diffy with my computer speakers and playing the onboard / internal speaker that both play at the same time.
.I've updated the Realtek High Definition driver and believe system is up to date on everything else. Would this be a matter of just disabling the onboard speaker?

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

sound on external speaker.

Please help

A:No internal or external speaker sound

first go to control panel and check the audio option of your computer and see if the computer recognizes a sound card.

after clicking audio go ahead and check the settings. if everything is grayed out it means you don't have sound card installed, you need to check device manager and see if you have your sound card there and if see if it's installed with the correct driver.

check also if the external speakers are connected to the right audio port at the back of pc.

hope this helps!

Hello,

I hope someone here can solve this problem because I'm at my wits end.

I installed a Microsoft headset called "LifeChat LX-3000" with a built in microphone. I only want to use it to make online videos for my business. Everything worked fine until I unplugged the headset. I can't get any sound at all from my computer. The internal speakers and external speakers give me no sound. The only way I can hear anything is by wearing the headset. I finally gave up and uninstalled the headset, but I still can't get any sound.

Any suggestions?? Why in the world can't I get my sound back??

A:[SOLVED] No Sound Through Internal or External Speakers

First, I am assuming that you still have your speakers hooked up the female mini pin that is green.

Second, go to
Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Device properties

3. Click on audio tab. Default device listed should be your onboard audio or sound card. If is not selected, select it and hit apply. If nothing is in the selection box, you may have to reinstall or re-enable your audio device.

4. Click on volume tab. Make sure mute is not selected.

I just reloaded a laptop with XP SP2. After reload, my laptop internal and external speakers don't produce any sound. I loaded the driver from the laptop manufacturers website. And everything appears to be set correctly and working from a systems view. However - no sound from PC on boot, application, or cd or dvd play.

In Control Panel/Sound and Audio
Hardware tab - Windows says the hardware is working OK
Volume tab - All mute buttons are off/unchecked. Volume is high on all componets - PC Speaker etc.

I've also removed the driver and reloaded it. still nothing.

Is there anything else I should try? I doubt it is the motherboard.....

A:No sound from internal or external speakers after XP reload on laptop

It may not be the correct driver. There are some cases that the OS wopuld not report any abnormalities but the driver may not be the exact driver you need. Identify the sound device you need ( you can use unknown device identifier for that ) and download the apropriate driver.

Also check the microphone socket incase something got stuck in there.

Hi hmnah,
Do you remember making any recent changes to the computer prior to this issue?
I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below:
Method 1:
Open audio troubleshooter and check if the issue occurs follow the steps in the link below:
Open the Playing Audio troubleshooter
Method 2:
Verify if the default sound device is set correctly. Follow these steps:

Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound, and then click Sound.
Click the Playback tab. Make sure the correct default audio device is selected. (For most users, the default audio device is Speakers.)
If your default device isn't set to the correct audio device, on the Playback tab, select the correct device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that Default Format is set to the value that you expect. When finished, click OK.
On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
If the sound settings are set correctly, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to "Verify that an audio driver is installed" now.
Select the audio device that you want as the default audio device, and then click Set Default.
Click OK to save your settings.

For your reference follow the steps in the following link:
Tips for fixing common sound problems
Method 3:
If the above step fails follow the steps from the link:

Doing a web search has not resulted in finding the problem, let alone a solution. Further my anti-virus is up-to-date, as are the microphone and speaker drivers.

Pointers in the direction of a solution will be much appreciated.

A:External Speaker Fails to Mute Internal Speaker

What audio codec does your laptop use?

It will be listed in device manager. The VEN DEV combo will be enough information.

You'll find it in the device properties details tab, specifically, the "Hardware IDs" section.

It will resemble this:

Code:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0288&SUBSYS_10EC0191&REV_1000
Usually the audio codec chip itself will detect an external speaker is plugged in. Have you checked your audio device's configuration software? It should have a shortcut in the classic control panel.

I recently got a new HP zBook 15 with the slim docking station and am experiencing an issue related to the speaker output. If I plug my external powered Bose speakers into the line out of the docking station I get sound out of both the external Bose speakers and the internal laptop speakers at the same time. In addition the sound from the Bose speakers sounds horrible...tinny and completely lacking any bass. If I plug the Bose speakers into the headphone jack on the side of the laptop (not the docking station) then I get great sound and ONLY the Bose speakers produce sound (which is what I want). Is there a fix to get only the external speakers to play when plugged into the docking station audio out? I've uninstalled and re-installed the Conexent ISST Audio drivers twice...no change. I've tried messing with the B&O Sound Control panel, but it doesn't have any configuration for the audio ports. I've messed around in the Windows Playback devices control panel, but can't seem to find a way to shut off the internal laptop speakers. FYI, this is a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. All Mircosoft updates installed. All HP updates installed via the HP Support Assistant. Latest laptop BIOS installed. Help! The sound output sounds HORRIBLE through the docking station. There must be a fix.

Windows 7 - 64 bit - PC: Has front headphones & mic jack and rear 6 speaker jacks.

I have been fiddling with this for the passed 3 hours, no luck.

I do know its's not a hardware issue. I have tried multiple jacks, all same issue, the headset works fine in other devices, no lose wires or anything such. No bad jacks.
I have also tried updating the realtek drivers, uninstalling them, rebooting, reinstalling. Disabling all other drivers, etc.
Also in realtek audio manager I have tried it with every setting checked and unchecked, nothing works.

I have a brand new 7.1 surround monoprice headset. My headset will play fine if I plug it directly into any audio jack, and configure it, but this is not true surround. When I connect the headset into the inline DAC/Decoder box(to get true surround), and then the PC, I lose audio in the right headphone. Also, the realtek audio manager reads my 7.1 headphones as 7.1 speakers.

The only thing I've came close to fixing it is rolling back to the original drivers, but then under the sound menu the configure button is greyed out and won't let me switch from stereo to surround.

To clarify the monoprice headset setup:
Headset plugs into DAC/Decoder box, then the decoder box has 3 outputs. 2 usb's and one auxiliery. Aux is currently plugged into the front of my pc in the headphones slot.(I tried the back jacks and get the same result). The usb's are just plugged into 2 available usb ports in the back. Hi, I have already solved much of my issue, but it still persists. I have the new skylake 6700K, new board, new everything except the same HD's. Everything on my prior system worked 100%, even the speakers. The 5.1 speakers are sitting in the same spot as the old PC, but when these are plugged in, I had constant static pops/cracks whenever the CPU was being used. Even just moving the mouse made it happen.

I solved that by going through MANY options. There is no interference because they work 100% on my old PC in the same exact spot. I tried other speakers I have and it's the same issue, only on the new PC I get that static. I tried using my old 750w psu, and had the same issues. I took the GPU out, ran onboard, same issue. I moved USB cables all away from the audio ports, same issue. Literally everything works on the old pc. I know my speakers are good, the case ports are good. All that is fine. Headphones give no static, ever, in both ports. Speakers, 2.1 and 5.1, give static off in all audio ports.

I solved this by turning off those CPU power saving options in BIOS. It was EIST and all the C1 C5 C7 states. Anyone I saw, I disabled. The static is gone then from the CPU being used.

THE ISSUE NOW:
Well, lets say I'm navigating through windows explorer, clicking through folders. That windows click sound comes up, but along with that static crack/pop. Anytime NO audio is playing, then when audio wants to play, it introduces it with a static pop. Another example, if I go to yo... Read more

Yesterday I installed a new external hard drive - following the installation - my sound no longer played through my television (video is fine, HDMI connection) and sound now comes ONLY through the laptop speakers.

The option for HDMI Audio doesn't appear in the 'sound' menus. I have 'checked' "shoe disabled" and "show disconnected" in those menus.
Basic Specs:

DV7-4060us

Windows 7/64bit

IDT High Definition Audio Codec

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4250

I have tried the following fixes gleaned from other forum posts on similar forum posts:

Uninstalling and reinstalling IDT drivers - didn't work.

HP driver 'recovery manager' to install 'original' IDT audio codecs - didn't work.

Unistalled ATI Video Drivers , and reinstalled them - didn't work

System Restore to a week ago - didn't work.

I use my HD TV as my primary monitor for gaming, so having sound through laptop speakers and not TV is quite annoying.

Perhaps my only solution is another sound card?

A:no sound through tv via hdmi, sound plays through laptop speakers (idt

So you're trying to get audio to play on your TV from your laptop? Since you said the video is fine it's obviously not the video drivers. It sounds like the sound output is configured wrong. I don't think it would be labeled as HDMI. HDMI is just DVI with HD Audio. Try altering your sound settings to see what you can get.

Audio is a very difficult thing to diagnose and fix.

Hello Everybody,
I thought I'd create an account so that I could share / brag about making the internal speaker on the OptiPlex 760 (and presumably others) work with Windows 10 and likely Windows 8, as well.
When I upgraded from Windows 7, one of the first things I noticed (once I realized it had booted up and I was staring at the desktop and not a splash screen) was that the sound wasn't working.  There was an installed driver (courtesy of Microsoft), a generic HD Audio that probably came from Analog Devices, themselves.  It noticed that there weren't headphones (front) or speakers (back) plugged in, but not the internal speaker.
After some (unsuccessful) fiddling around, and searching, I found this post from 2009 (right around the release of Windows 7).
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3513/t/19299870

That worked well for Windows 7 using the Vista drivers, so I went in search of the Windows 7 drivers (which had since been released) in the hopes that it'd work for Windows 8 or 10 (update R228257):
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=66TNR

Booyah!  I didn't even need to run the installer in compatibility mode!

A:DELL OptiPlex 760 Internal Speakers and Windows 10 (ADI 198x integrated audio drivers)

I, too, have an Optiplex 760 made in 2008 that I have updated to Windows 10 Pro.  Since I usually use an external speaker, I didn't notice this issue at first - until I tried the front headphone jack; there was no sound, and plugging in the headphones didn't silence the external speakers.  Eventually, I found the Sound tool in Control panel that lets you choose either the external speaker jack on the back or the front panel headphone jack and the internal speaker.  My current audio driver is the Win10 version, 10.0.10586.0.
What I'd like to clarify is whether you are having to choose which connector to use, as I am, or whether that driver will let you have a speaker plugged into the rear panel jack and still use the front panel headphone jack without having to choose in Control Panel - as it worked in Windows 7.

Like the thread title says, I plug in my headphones and listen to them quite happily but then wait, oh no, the sound is still playing through the speakers! I've had this laptop for over a year now, upgraded to W7 when it came out; this is my first issue with it.

I've had a look at sound in control panel, which lists four options to set as default.
1) Speakers + Redirected Headphones (currently default)
2) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 1
3) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 2
4) Digital Output Device (SPDIF Out)

I have tried using headphones with all four of these as default. The only way I can get any sound at all is to use the first option.

The title pretty much says it all. I realize there are other threads out there similar to this, but their solutions either didn't work for me, or the problem wasn't quite the same. My issue is as follows: When I plug my headphones into my laptop (hp dv7t 6c000 quad) audio plays through both the speaker and the headphones, which I don't want. Also, when I check the volume, there are 2 sliders, one for the speakers and one for the headphones. When I check the mixers, almost all programs are under the normal speaker mixer (and they play through the normal speakers), but some (steam being one of them) show up under the headphones mixer. When I move the slider to a new sound volume for the headphones, it makes the little ding sound (through the headphones) and I can hear the test. Disabling my default speakers didn't work, and neither did setting the headphones as default. I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers. I'm totally at a loss of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Sound Plays Through Speakers When Headphones Plugged In

Some systems have an Audio Control Panel that allows the option of having the speakers on when you plug in headphones, or to not have speakers on. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound to see if you have this and the option.

For example, I have RealTek audio and in my Realtek HD Audio Manager, I have the option for how I want the headphone jack to operate.

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, but did you use the HP supplied driver? If not, the HP supplied sound driver is the preferred driver. Non-Vendor drivers in many cases may not work or work correctly.

Since they're USB, you may have unknowingly muted them. I had similar issues when the headset I was using was USB..Windows picked it up as an alternate audio source.

So, go to your control panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the audio tab and change your default playback device to the headset. Once that's done, click the volume button underneath it and make sure it's not muted or turned down all the way.

Once that's checked, before to change your default playback device to the Realtek HD Audio.

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you. Since the mic still works, the headset is obviously good..although it IS possible to blow the speakers in the ear pieces..I had that problem with Logitec headsets.

Hello , I've had a lot of audio problesms with my laptop once I had updated to Windows 10. My audio has just given up on me. During the starting , my audio jack never used to work. Speakers used to work fine then. Latley my speakers have gone crazy too. Once i power up my laptop ,  the sound works both on my speakers and my headphones clearly. For some time though. After like half an hour , the sound just dies automatically. It doesn't play any sounds including test sounds. Sometime i can't even play a video when there's no output ( Vlc) also a song cannot be played to any of the music players due to sound being off.  I have to restart my laptop every time to get the sound back. And then again the problem continues. I've tried every troubleshooting methods that i've found both on the  laptop and the forums here. My audio driver IDT High Definition audio. All my enhancements were disabled. Beats audio control is also reseted. Updated drivers through HP Support and also 3rd party , none of them worked. Also changed the driver from IDT to High Definition Audio ( Microsoft ) and was set as default. Have tried the default audio quality too, still couldn't fix. Even then the audio troubles contrinued. Although, my microphone works perfectly. I was able to make a skype call and the other person was able to hear me but still i had no sound output. I've never done any changes to the settings since t... Read more

Have you tried changing it in control panel sound, or possibly through any sound package that might have been installed with the driver.

Okay, hopefully someone can help me clear up this issue. I got some new speakers, hooked them up and realized there was no sound coming from the right speaker (the speaker you could hear that it was okay though! and the click or sound of the chord plugged in) and then it also has the control for the volume on it.....so physically there is nothing wrong..however, with allt he balances the same on my computer and even with the orginal speakers, I am getting NO SOUND from the right one and it's all coming out of the left.
Any help much appreciated!

I purchased this desktop earlier this year.  I have updated my BIOS and sound drivers and still no sound from the internal speakers, even after restart?! Does this model even have any? So frustrating...

A:no internal speaker sound

Hi: I don't know of any HP consumer desktop PC that comes with an internal speaker, including yours. Only HP business desktop PC's have internal speakers. You will need to purchase a set of external speakers. They plug into the back port labeled # 8 in the illustration below. Figure : Back I/O ports DC input powerVGADVI-DUSB 3.0: 2USB 2.0: 2LANAudio: Line inAudio: Line outAudio: Microphone

Hello. Dell does not support Win8.1 on the Inspiron 15 N5010, however, the audio should work.
Your laptop has IDT audio hardware on the motherboard, but there is not a Win8.1 audio driver available for it, so install the IDT Win7 audio driver into Win8.1, by using compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.
If the speakers still do not work after installing the IDT driver, revert the laptop back to Windows 7 if possible.
If the speakers still do not work after reverting to Win7, test the speakers for failure by running either the audio test in the ePSA test, or by failing the color bar test in  the PSA test {Your laptop will have either the ePSA test or the older PSA test.) Instruc... Read more

I have an MSI 785GTM-E45 Mother Board. I have no sound coming from the speakers. Tried new speakers and still no sound. If I click on the speaker Icon on the bottom right it shows the speaker graph going up and down as sound is being produced. I tried the head phones and nothing coming from them either. I tried playing a CD and nothing from there either. I first noticed it when I was trying to play something from YOUTUBE and thought it might just be the site but then I tried off line as well. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. This is the first day that I have noticed it. Thanks for any help. I have checked all the settings I can think of but probably have missed something somewhere.

A:No sound from speakers but showing sound graph on speaker control

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, set your "Speakers" as the Default Playback device (if it's not now set). Then see if you have speaker and/or headphone sound.

I am working on a sony vaio pcg-3b1m

The power socket has recently been repaired, and the laptop fully and correctly (I have checked), re assembled.

Problem is, there is little or no sound coming from the internal, or when connected, external speakers.
Have tried updating drivers, and all the usual sound checks, but to no avail. Even so far as a full factory restore has been done, but still with no joy.

Any suggestions?

Good Evening Friends,

I have had this problem for a long while now but essentially I am forced to use a headphone setup for my desktop but would really like to use external speakers instead of this current set up. What is confusing me is that these external speakers worked for a good long while then stopped working suddenly. Furthermore I switched monitors to a HP w2207 and was wondering if that had anything to do with it. I have updated Realtek to the current drivers and the premise remains the same. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Sound Plays in Headphones in front jack but ext speakers do not work

Right click the small speaker in the lower right corner of your task bar. Click Playback devices. Is there a device shown with a green checkmark? Post an image of that window, if you can. (Use Windows Snipping Tool then attach the image using the Paperclip icon in the message text header.)

Forgot to mention: When you plug headphones into the front jack, the default action is to turn off the external speakers so that Windows action is normal.

Hi! I'm not very good with computers so I need some help with this.
When I plug in my head phones my computer does not register them and keeps playing music on the main speakers, I have checked the Sound in the controlpanel but only the main speakers are listed there.

I have an Acer Aspire computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit.

Please help since I am clueless with this!

Hello Affio and welcome to the forums!

Have you tried unplugging the speakers and plugging the headphones into the jack the speakers were in? See if it recognises them then.

I have this old computer which I dont use anymore, but there is something about it that left me quite confused

It has a sound card, but the external spreakers produce no sound. Instead, the internal speaker produces all the sounds (which gives terrible quality because the case is closed, and its a crappy speaker anyways). I never changed any of the computers settings, but one day it was like that and never changed back.

Any explanations (I dont use the computer and prolly wont (it doesnt even have an OS installed (ready for trash))?

Just want to figure this one out. Its an old compaq p-i with < 128 RAM (I think its like 32MB)

the case speaker doesnt rely on your sound card, all it provides is basically beeps and such. For sound from your sund card you need external speakers connected to the sound card sockets.

Can anyone help please. I have had my HP Pavilion TS 11 Notebook PC for a little while now and from day one there has been no sound fom the internal speakers. If I plug headphones into the headphone socket the sound is there. There is a circular symbol and "dts/Sound+" written on the notebook if that helps. How can I get this rectified? Kind Regards Steve
