Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration ... newb question

Q: Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration ... newb question

Hello. I have the Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration problem which I've googled and discovered is common and well known, i.e., make sure the adapter is set to obtain the IP automatically, and if that fails update the drivers.

However... I need help getting the drivers installed. I don't know where to get them from, or where to install them to.

The computer that is not connecting either via ethernet or wifi is an Acer laptop running Win 10. I have a Lenovo running 8.1 that does connect, thus I must use the Lenovo to get the drivers, then transfer them to the Acer and install them.

Can someone please tell me how to do this? Where do I get the driver files (specifically, how do I know which files I want) and then how to install them once I've transferred them to the Acer?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Provide make and model for the Acer laptop, so we can look up the network interfaces. Also might be nice to let us know if you're using wired Ethernet or WiFi on the Acer machine. If you can provide that info, we can get you headed in the right direction. HTH,
--Ed--

PS: I keep an el cheapo StarTech USB 3.0 to GbE adapter around (Newegg: $22) for when NICs go south. You can plug it into most PCs (the drivers load automatically) and use a fast, simple, wired Internet connection to fix a machine that's having problems with its built-in network interfaces quickly and easily. In these days of Windows 10, I use it at least once a month!

Hello,

I'm about 4 hours deep into trying to fix this. I've followed several forum posts with similar issues, with no luck.

I've been running windows 10 on my PC with my current hardware (including modem/router) for about a year now with no issues. Yesterday I booted up and had no internet access. The error was something to do with "sockets". I ran the netsh socket reset command, which simply changed the error to my current invalid IP configuration error.

So here's my current state:

I'm typing this from a laptop I dug out of storage. On this laptop I have internet access both through ethernet and the on-board wifi adapter.

On my PC, the ethernet connection is through my motherboard (adapter: Interl Ethernet Connection I218-V), and I have a separate wifi card (adapter: Qualcomm Atheros AR938x). Whether connected with ethernet or wifi, the connection status is:

IPv4 Connectivity: No Network Access
IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet Access

All items in the properties list are checked, including the IPV4/IPv6 items. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling both the ethernet and wifi adapters. I'm reinstalling from the latest Intel driver installer (PROWinx64).

I've tried the various netconfig commands. If I call "ipconfig /release" I get:

"An error occurred while releasing interface Ethernet 2: An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint".

Here is my ipconfig /all

I've tried a dozen other things, but I don't want to convo... Read more

I'm having an issue with ipconfig /release

I have uploaded a screenshot with the error I am getting, any help appreciated

A:Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration

Ipconfig /release, only drops the connection. It has nothing else to do with networking. Really need more information. What ISP do you have? What router or Gateway are you using? It appears from your screenshot that you are able to connect to the Gateway/Router. So what is your real problem? Not able to go to any websites? Is the connection dropping on the Router/Gateway, or at the ISP side.

So I have been having this problem for a while now. I'm going to give you guys a step-by-step process that I did in order to be as understandable as possible. Earlier today I was doing some school work on my computer. As I was working I was disconnected from the Internet. My computer usually randomly disconnects sometimes, but most of the time I would fix this by using the troubleshooting option in the Settings menu. I did this and I reconnected. However, I was still getting the connection error message. So I decided to open up the command prompt and renew/release the IP. However, whenever I entered ipconfig /release I was disconnected. This happens every time I execute ipconfig /release. I then troubleshooted and was reconnected with connection errors still popping up. I then decided to troubleshoot while repeatedly typed ipconfig /release into the command prompt. The troubleshooter finished and said that Ethernet doesnt have a valid IP configuration. Please help I'm not sure what to do now!

I kept getting this problem now as I remember i had it last time as the way to solve this was reformat my computer but again i don't want to to format my computer and reinstall everything again. Also, i feel like when i get this ethernet doesn't have valid IP problem making my computer feel slow rather than usual stuff.

I have tried to do the CMD command thing but getting access decline while resetting.

At the moment i am using Wifi which this only way it work for me.

So... I just updated from win 7 to win 10, as I got it for free. All went smoothly, but there was no ethernet connection. I'm running a custom built pc, connected to my router via ethernet cable.

At first windows detected the cable, but said: ''Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I was on about around the settings, and deleted the ethernet network from windows' settings. I thought it would come back by just re-plugging the cable. This didn't happen. What happened was, that the whole 'Ethernet' tab disappeared from the 'Network & internet' menu!

I also don't have 'Wi-fi' or 'Airplane mode' tabs in the menu... Well I have a pc that doesn't have support for wifi so that might be why...

Does anyone have a clue on how to get win 10 to detect the ethernet cable, and maybe that way bring back the 'ethernet' tab?

Oh, and I tested the ethernet cable on my laptop (running win 7), and it worked fine.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I have a brand new PC workstation.

Everything was fine, until recently, when I turn on my PC, I don't get an immediate internet connection. This is happening nearly everytime now with some frequency.

I reset the router/modem and everything is fine after that, so all is good.

But it is still frustrating. I get, "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration".

I googled this and it appears I am certainly not alone.

The following to assist you are screenshots of my 'ipconfig' and 'Network Connection Status' before (unsuccessful) and after (successful) internet access:

You will see from the above that there is certainly something different with the data...

I'm sure it is something so simple.

Incidentally, I did find a nice youtube 'tutorial' in relation to this subject title about manually configurating the settings:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onXsKTAxYtk

I haven't tried this yet and that is probably down to the fact that I can't find my alternate DNS server setting (the very last box to fill in - watch the video and you will know what I mean) ???

Many thanks for reading, please help me.

I've had my modem connected straight to my computer via ethernet cable and never really had any problems. I recently downloaded itunes to listen music on my ipod and i know this probably isn't the problem but weeks later i was prompted to download an update for itunes and of course I clicked restart after update but start up computer and internet did not work. It was this "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I've tried resetting the modem and nothing. It is worth noting that I reformatted to see if it would fix it but nothing. but once i connect my modem directly to my laptop it works perfectly fine. I also including attachments so i could possibly be better assisted. Also worth noting my motherboard is a Asus crosshair formula IV which unfortunately doesn't have updated windows 8 drivers but never gave me problems before. the ipconfig with black background is the laptop ipconfig.

I've been working on this for over two hours now. I have wifi on laptop. In Windows 10 I can't access internet on PC with Ethernet. On the same computer I have a Linux Mint partition and ethernet connection is fine there 160Mbps. I've unplugged (several times) modem and router. I've disabled and reenabled ethernet. I've turned off the PC and restarted. I've done all the Ipconfig commands, however "release" doesn't work as there is no media detected. About two weeks ago my ISP upgraded their modem to a 150Mbps. Since then I have been using Linux so this is the first time I've booted to W10. It worked fine before. Right now I'm waiting for a tech sevice call back from my provider to see if they can sort it out; thought I'd try here also.
TIA, Allan

This issue has just come up, and i have tried many other things and they wont work. I cant give the specs of the computer, because i am typing this from a separate device because i cant type it from the computer with issues.

The Problem basically is that I don't have internet connection, but the computer says i do, and the wireless connection is fine, and if i plug the same Ethernet cable into a different device, the other device works fine, so I know that it is Computer based, and that Re installing the ether Ethernet drivers and resetting the Ethernet adapter didn't work.

Any suggestions would be most helpful, again, I aplogize that i cant give the specs, but i can type some things in by hand.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem in my computer at the moment where it won't connect to the internet. I've been using two of those Ethernet plugs since I've had my desktop computer to give it the best speed possible but recently it's decided it no longer wants to connect to the internet.

When I've tried to check the problem it says 'Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.' At the moment, it only has my network as 'Unidentified Network' when it should have the name of it and the connection is 'limited' even though I can use the wifi and internet on my tablet fine.

My desktop runs Windows 8 and I should mention my router is downstairs. I connect via Ethernet by having one plug near my desktop and one plug near my router and I've tried plugging the Ethernet into my laptop to if they are the problem and it works fine so it can't be the plugs/cable.

Any help is much appreciated.

whenever I try to connect to the internet using ethernet it tells me that "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

I have the Realtek PCIe GBE family controller as my ethernet device.

I have browsed the internet about it and tried to update the ethernet driver via device manager. However, even after doing that, nothing has changed. I am currently using Wifi, but at my work location the connection via WLAN is very... bad.

I hardly have any knowledge about drivers and BIOS and stuff. I hope that anyone amongst you is able and willing to help me out in this matter!

I sincerely thank you all for your time!

Hi guys. So when I turned on my desktop today, I got the limited network sign. I am using Powerline, so it showed as Ethernet, just as usual. I had the powerline adaptors unplugged, since I moved my PC to another room for a day, and then back again in the old place where it used to work perfectly. Technically, the only thing I've done with the Powerline adaptors is unplugging them for around 24 hours, and then put them back in the exact same sockets. They are not in any kind of power strip, just plugged directly into the wall.
So here is what I have tried to do so far:

Restarting and replugging everything.Used Wi-Fi on the same, as well as another computer, to test if it worked (it did on both devices)Using an Ethernet cable directly from the modem/router to a laptop (worked)Re-pairing the two powerline adaptors several times (showed on the indicator lights that both were connected, just not transfering any data
Do you guys have any suggestions to what I can do to solve my problem?
My powerline kit is the PA-TL6010
When I try to troubleshoot the Ethernet connection, it says the following: "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration". Could that make it so it's easier to solve the problem?

Hi,
With your Windows 7 laptop make note on IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS.
Unplug Windows 7 laptop from network and connect Windows 8 laptop instead. Configure manually exactly same as above.
If it works, then problem on DHCP configuration.

Cheers.

You have probably heard this problem a lot of times and it have bin talked about in a lot of forums.
But after searching and trying almost every posable fix I could find, nothing would fix the problem ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
After playing a match in "League of Legends" with my desktop I noticed my ping went up and I disconnected right after, I looked at my network icon in the taskbar and saw an yellow error mark. I clicked on the network icon and it said "Unidentified Network" and "Limited". I tried to troubeshoot the problem and the problem found was: "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. I ran ipconfig with the cmd tool and I noticed Ipv4 Adress was 169.254.171.146 (As ive heard that means windows is using a default ip by itself).
I have a lot of devices in my house like laptops and smart-phones that work perfectly good.
One thing that did work was sharing 3G internet from my iPhone to my desktop via usb.

Solutions tried: Resetting router, disabled the "allow computer to turn of this device to save power" in ethernet options, tried different cables, restarting pc and updated drivers (installing the driver to a usb from my laptop).

I hope someone will try to help me with my problem. Thank you!

A:"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

That IP address is usually the result of the system not obtaining one from your router. Are you hardwired to the router and have you checked for loose cables? If the cable isn't clicked into one of the ends, it could loose your connection. Also, if you have an extra empty one, try a different router port.

Agreed, the same thing happened to me Thursday as well. All the laptops and my friends computer(same exact build as my own.) had been able to connect to the internet via wireless/ethernet. However my computer does not. For quite a while it would say the address doesn't have a valid IP, now it thinks there is nothing wrong... I had wiped and reinstalled windows 4 times in a sorry attempt to fix the issue. Also, I had checked the driver for my internet and reinstalled the latest version several times. I've exhausted all the resourses I can think of. Let me know if you need more info on my issue and hopefully it can contribute to helping the guy above with his issue as well.

Hello.

I have been trying to fix this for the last 4-5 hours with no luck. I swear the computer was working fine just a few days ago. This evening, there's a yellow warning triangle above my internet icon.

Setup:
Centurylink DSL connected to Netgear Nighthawk
3 desktop computers all hardwired to router (2 of which are fine, 1 has no connection)

Was able to get into safe mode with networking (network was still dead)
Performed virus scan found a few trojans, deleted. Reset still no connection.
Performed IP Reset. Was successful.

Performed diagnostic:

I've searched the internet to solve this issue, I've tried different recommended techniques, and I can't seem to fix it. I bought a wireless router so that I can use wireless with my phone and TV, and when I hook it up to my modem, I get the "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration error. My modem works fine when it is connected directly to the comcast cable, it's only when I connect the Linksys router that it stops working. I've disconnected all cables, waited, and reconnected. I've disabled the networks and then enabled them. I've tried ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew... But I seem to get an error when I try to renew it. I uploaded photos of the the renew error that I get (release.jpg), and then the ipconfig/all screenshots (config and config2). There are two because it couldn't all fit on the screen.
I have Windows 8.1
Motorola Surfboard modem
Linksys E1200 router
Norton 360 antivirus
Comcast Internet through my apartment complex

I hope this is what you need to know. If there's anything else that you need, let me know. Thanks in advance for taking to time to help. This is so annoying!

A:"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP Configuration

What is the model of the "Motorola Surfboard modem"?

For the PC connected directly to the modem please show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after each command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
Then reset the router to factory defaults.
Unplug the modem and router and shut down the PC.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN port.
Connect the PC to a router LAN port.
Plug in modem.
After 30 seconds plug in router.
Boot PC.
If you do not have internet access now please show another ipconfig /all as described above.

I have an ethernet connection using a Powerline (TL-PA2010KIT), which I use for online gaming. It's been working perfectly, until today. For some reason, I can't connect - I get the little "Limited access" symbol, and no mentions of an actual connection.

However, I have a wi-fi connection that works perfectly, besides fluctuations in connection sometimes, which makes it unacceptable for online gaming. I'm using a Virgin Media Superhub, so I assume that there's no problems there if the wi-fi works. Also, I'm using Windows 8 if that's any concern.

Hi guys,

I am running Windows 10 demo version.

I have problems connecting to the net. I am shown the error along the lines of "Ethernet does not have a valid IP configuration".

From command prompt I run "ipconfig/all" and here is the console's output:

When I run "ipconfig/renew" it fell through:

I should add, I have no problems on Windows Vista however.

Any ideas?

A:Ethernet does not have a valid IP configuration

There is an issue with your network adapter (probably the device driver or messed up network settings). If Windows cannot get an IP address from the network, this is the IP it assigns itself. Check Device Manager, or re-install your network settings.

This is my first time posting. I am on Windows 10 64 bit professional. I was trying to add RAM to my pc a couple of days ago when I suddenly lost my connection to the internet. My computer is connected to the router via Ethernet and has worked fine for years. My laptop still connects to the internet via the router. The troubleshooter says I do not have a valid IP address. I have uninstalled the network adapter driver and then searched for hardware changes, which reinstalled it, and that did not work. I've tried the cmd run ipconfig /all and that just flashed something on screen that disappeared instantly. Not sure what else you might need to know about my situation, but please ask anything you need to in order to help me find a solution. Oh, and when this first happened I called my ISP to see if they could help me, and all the young guy could think of is that my NIC card might need a driver update and he told me to call Microsoft. Any thoughts or suggestions are all appreciated! Thank you.

itsreallyCheryl,   to Bleeping Computer Forums!

What you may want to do is first, download the most recent Ethernet driver that did work from your OEM, Realtek, or where ever you obtained it from. It could be that the OEM has updated Windows 10 drivers for your make/model of computer. If so, get the Ethernet driver from there for best compatibility.

Then using the Device Manager, uninstall that device, being sure to check the box that says 'Delete the software for this device' & reboot. Now, install the package that you downloaded, if needed, can install in 8.1 compatibility mode (this option is under Properties).

I have a 2 week old Windows 8 Gateway PC that is wired to the internet through the Ethernet card and I have a wireless router connected too for my laptop and tablet.  It's been working perfect for 2 weeks and so has my wireless on my laptop and tablet. Today I moved some things in the room and had to unplug everything. I put it all back the same and now only my wireless works on my laptop and tablet. The PC is showing limited access and when I run the diagnostics it says "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration" error message.
I have unplugged the wireless and connected the cable modem directly to the PC and it works fine. As soon as I route it through the wireless router it fails. Please I don't understand how I unplugged everything for only a few hours and then reconnected it exactly the same and now it doesn't work. I tried all 4 ports on the router, still nothing, I reset the TCI/IP, renewed the DNS, flushed the DNS, did a handstand, shook hands with a bear, ( so obviously I have done all the basics and more) I changed cords between router and cable, even so how come my wireless still works fine? There is nothing wrong with the antivirus, I don't have any viruses or malware, the computer hardly gets used, but today it won't suddenly work. Please, any suggestions. Thank you.

A few days ago I had to restart my PC after a game froze. When I booted up again I found I was unable to connect to the internet. Troubleshooting gave the error 'Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration.'
I can connect to the modem with my laptop using the same cable, so I don't think its an issue with the router or
cable. I was told that programs could cause issues with the network adapters, so after backing up my data I wiped my computer and re-installed windows from a bootable usb.

Here is the IP config data.

I've run the flushdns file, but it seems to timeout while running the Ipconfig /renew command.

Following instructions from another thread I was told to reset the TCP/IP stack. Running the command gave the following.
From there I followed instructions to use regedit to change permissions, which enabled me to run the command without errors, however I was still unable to connect to the router when my computer reset.

Any help to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

A:Ethernet doesnt have a valid ip configuration

You are getting a 169.254 address, whigech means that your computer is not getting a DHCP address and is assigning itself an IP in the APIPA range.

I'd reboot your router, and ensure that the DHCP server functionality is enabled.

I have an HP p6616 desktop that came with a Realtek PCIe FE Family Ethernet adapter that cannot exceed a speed of 10 Mbps. After working with an HP customer support rep, he concluded that I had a bad set of chips. I purchased another Ethernet adapter, Realtek PCIe GBE Family, and I cannot get it to connect to the internet. Troubleshooting continually gives the ?Invalid IP Configuration? message. I tried the new adapter on another Windows 7 computer and it worked beautifully. I have tried many of the suggestions on this forum, but nothing has solved the problem, it is still getting an IPv4 address of 169.254.x.x.

ipconfig /all is attached below. In this case, the new adapter with the invalid IP configuration is ?Local Area Connection?, and the old adapter is ?Local Area Connection 2?.

Not sure if you have tried this or not and it may sound kinda obvious; but; have you tried the ipconfig /renew? Also; you could also try updating the drivers via the link below:

Hi guys, I have a self built desktop that I only connect to the internet with using WiFi. But lately the connection on this PC is very intermittent and this is the only device in my house with this problem (so it's not the modem/router?). My PC has an Asus P8Z77-V motherboard with an Intel 82579V ethernet adapter and a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wifi adapter, and I am running W10. Admittedly, I don't know much about networking but regardless this problem seems mind boggling!
Many times throughout the day my wifi connection will become 'Limited' and I cannot access the internet. I've noticed that during these times my IP address assigned by DHCP will be some useless 169.x.x.x number, but the strange part is sometimes the problem can be fixed by disabling my Intel ethernet adapter in Device Manager. Of course this is only temporary and I have even 're-fixed' the problem by enabling the same adapter after I have already disabled it.
I have even tried disabling the ethernet controller in BIOS in a moment of frustration but it didn't have any effect.
Windows troubleshooting gives me a variety of messages, most often 'IP configuration for wi-fi is not valid'. I suspect the ethernet adapter is interfering with this somehow but the troubleshooting application has also told me my security settings for the network are wrong, which I know they are not, or that there is a 'problem with the wireless adapter or access point'.

Thank you for any help you all can give! This is driving me batty ... Read more

A:IP configuration not valid - interference from ethernet adapter?

Have you checked Asus website for updated drivers. As for the Wifi, if it is a USB adapter, you need to also check and see if there are any up to date drivers on the manufacturer website that made the adapter.

When you see your IP address in the 169.254.xxx.xxx range that means you are not getting a DNS from your router. Try to turn your router off for about 15 seconds and then turn it back on and see if that helps.

You may have to restart your computer also.

hi Zachhuber89,

Do you have any Apple softwares (i.e. iTunes) installed on your system? If so, this might be a problem wwith the Bonjour DNS Responder Service as discussed here. Check these fix.

Otherwise, try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and test your Internet conenction. If everything works, perform a clean boot and restart the computer in normal mode.

Let me know your findings.

(I attach an ipconfig/all output text file and a Xirrus screenshot.)

My Windows 7 Lenovo M30 laptop has suddenly stopped connecting to my router. Other Windows 7 devices connect just fine. The problem suddenly arose for no apparent reason. (The device worked fine until yesterday.) I've read widely in forums and tried lots of things without success (below).

Troubleshooting reports these 2 errors:
1) "Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration"
2) ?Problem with the Wireless Adapter or Access point?

I?ve tried the following so far.
1) Factory reset router (BTHub6)
2) Rebooted PC
3) Disabled Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniports
4) Disabled Bluetooth
5) Disabled then re-Enabled the (Qualcomm Atheros AR956x) Wireless Network Adapter
6) Updated the driver for the Wireless Network Adapter
7) Checked that ?Obtain an IP address automatically? is checked in IPv4 and IPv6
8) Checked that ?Obtain the DNS Server address automatically? is checked in IPv4 and IPv6
9) Checked that there was no McAfee Bonjour Service installed.
10) Rebooted again?.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance for any ideas!
