USB 2.0 Hubs - Recommendations Needed

Q: USB 2.0 Hubs - Recommendations Needed

My laptop has only two USB ports, which quickly turns into a shortage given all the things that connect to USB. With literally thousands of hubs available, I'm hoping someone has some personal experience on the subject that they could share. Which manufacturers are more reliable than others? What types of hardware have shown to be ugly when connecting through a hub.

I need to get one, so if I have to go solo on this, I guess I'll be the guinea pig. I'll be buying like 10 at a time to try several.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Quite annoyed each time I get a USB hub it shows all kinds of pictures of general stuff that its intended to work for. They come with AC adapters in all. I connect something light like a thumb drive and something like a AC powered USB HDD and it results random disconnects, reconnects...makes my resources unavailable to the program...Its frustrating...had this problem with different hubs on various computers. Just brought a usb 3.0 hub still the same mess.

Has anyone purchased a hub where it survives whatever you throw at in the chain?

yeah, I got one made by Rosewill and it handles everything that I plug and unplug into it without an issue.

Hi, i have windows xp (sp2) on my desktop computer im using my laptop top t write this cause i do not have internet on my desktop comp. i have integrated USB slots on my motherbard(K9MM-v) its has 4x 2.0 usb slots and i had them working as 2.0 but i formated my hard disk cause i had a few problems with the computer and a whole heap of junk so i wanted a fresh start.

When i plug in a USB it says this device can perform faster. This deve can perform faster if you connect it to a hi speed usb 2.0 port. When i clicked on the massages it said i had no 2.0 usb ports.

i have tried bios setting and i cant find any usb settings in bios.

I cant really ignore this error cause i have usb things that need 2.0 to run

Ive tried uninstalling all the usb drivers.

i cant use window update to update all the drivers and stuff on that computer cause i have no internet on that comperter and to get internet on that computer i need to use the usb port and it has to be 2.0

A:Windows xp detecting 2.0 usb hubs as 1.1 hubs

Zooc,

You will need to download the appropriate drivers on your laptop and transfer them across to your desktop. By formatting your desktop, you have lost all the drivers you had.

Does your desktop not have an ethernet port? I'm curious why you can't connect it to the Internet without USB?

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm completely new to these forums, so hello! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the following problems. It's a doozy, and has completely gotten worse over the last few days. Please read on...

My computer at home contracted a particularly nasty virus. The computer initially ran slower than molasses (probably from spyware/adware/virus), so my wife and I have been attempting to fix this problem. It was totally *my* fault, as I went on a gaming website and it downloaded some content that's now choking the life out of the computer.

I recently attempted to install new virus protection. Now, the computer is telling me that the copy of Windows XP I have is an illegal copy (which is NOT true, it was legitimately bought), and that I need to validate the copy. My wife has the administrative privileges on the computer, so I could only get so far this morning in fixing the problem. Compounding problems are the anti virus program I installed is failing to initialize, and sometimes Windows Explorer crashes, and leaves me with just the background picture, but no desktop whatsoever.

The CD rom drive still works, albeit slowely (takes forever to load the contents of a CD). I am a complete newbie when it comes to these types of errors. We have a lot of stuff on the computer that needs to be saved, so a "do or die" reinstall won't be feasible, as we don't want to lose everything we have on the computer. I think... Read more

I've just been 'talking' extensively with the software side, & we basically came to the conclusion that my current ancient computer is on the outs & doesn't have long to live. It cannot be upgraded.
I'd like to build a new one from scratch. Although I'm a novice & have never tried this at home, I did take an A+ course last year so am not totally unprepared.
I've been browsing on Pricewatch.com...I'd like to buy a motherboard combo (P4, at least 2.0Ghz) w/ integrated sound (upgradeable), USB 2.0, DDR SDRAM, heatsink & fan, a case/power supply combo, a video card with at min. 64mb ram (I'm not a serious gamer) and a hard drive--at least ATA 100 & 40Gb. I'd just like any suggestions/recommendations/cautions from anyone who's done this before & really knows what they're doing, so I don't screw it up. I'd appreciate any tips anyone wants to give me on products, etc. Oh yeah, I'd like to keep my Win ME & load it on the new HDD, mainly because I resent the fact that Microsoft won't let me put XP on more than one computer (if this is a dumb idea, please tell me why) Thanks!

I currently use a Seagate 5TB portable drive to store basically everything (my Lightroom Catalog & photos, my videos, documents, music etc), so this means very little is stored on my Mac HD, and doesn't slow it down, especially when doing post-production on photos or video. The drive was formatted to exFat when I bought it, and this means that when I was travelling between home, work and college I could plug my drive into any machine (Win or Mac) I can access my LR catalog and edit my work anywhere.

However, the drive is almost full, and I wanted to upgrade to a larger portable drive (at least 8TB). However I am finding it difficult to find an 8TB drive that doesn't require an external power source. It's not a problem at home just plugging the power lead into a socket, but in work or college there often aren't accessible sockets within reach, so it's vital that the 8TB drive can do the same as my current 5TB drive and take its power from the Mac itself.

I did order the following: https://www.photospecialist.ie/lacie-porsche-design-p-9233-8tb-drive-usb-3-0#group5315
It seemed to fix the bill, because it's USB 3.0, although it has a USB-C socket, which I've not seen on any drives before. I think it's meant to suit people connecting to their Macbooks or phones. However after I ordered I discovered that the drive needs an external power source, and also I found a lot of reviews online on Amazon where people were complaining about the... Read more

Hi ladies and gentleman...

I'm fairly confident in that I'm not the only one who is wondering about which fans are reliable and whether or not they truly make a difference from one another.

I was just wondering, which 80mm fans, which 120mm fans, and which 92mm fans people recommend...

Thank you.

A:Fans - Recommendations needed :)

i may not have recommendations for 80 and 92mm fans but i just want to say a few things.

try and get a fan that has low dBa but high CFM. higher CFM is usually accompanied by higher dBa (more noise) unless its a 120mm which runs on lower RPMs but provide more CFM for the RPM because if its bigger fins.

on avg, i guess a 28 dBa is silent enough for most people (esp me) and dBa:CFM ratio arent so good on smaller fans compared to 120mm fans persay
avg dBA and CFM on 80mm fans are 30 and 34. having a few of these in ur case can get pretty annoying (maybe its jus the ones i had, they were ghetto fans by sunbeam)

sleeve bearings vs ball bearings
sleeve is quieter but less life
ball is bit more noise but longer life. its all up to u n ur preferences.

in terms of brands, im not so sure, jus dont pick a 2$ fan. u get what u pay for.

anyway im not sure if any of what i wrote make much sense... i need to go to sleep now lol gnight

- allow multiple users to modify and access at the same time
- be able to search through e-mails and attached documents
- uses a database which can easily be extracted to Oracle

I've found a couple which looks like it'll provide what I need but I would like to get some opinions from many of you who might have implemented one.

Ones that I'm looking more closely at currently are:

I've built a couple of computers, troubleshot them when their was problems, had probably hundreds of hours of maintenance/gaming on them, and have loved every minute!
Building a computer is too much fun to consider buying one complete.
But it has been a few years since I have done this, and I am having some problems ferreting out the new boards, etc., and would appreciate some advice.

I am building a computer not for anything specific, but need it to have enough power and RAM to be able to play with pictures, and video if desired.

I was thinking about getting an Asus with an AMD processor, 3000-4000 processor, 800 MB front side bus, and 1 GIG of DDR RAM. I didn't know if the different types of sockets made much of a difference, these days. I have always run AMD, and don't know about the different kinds of Intel processors.

I have been told to get a hard drive, SATA2, at least 160GB, with a minimum of 8MB cache, I assume 7200 RPM minimum.

Case/power supply combination, I don't know how many watts is even considered normal these days.

DVD Burner- don't think this is a biggie as to which brand, but may want a multi-layered one for backup purposes

Along with the normal modem, there is a chance that this may be set up a a server for a network at my house, eventually. So, if I didn't get the components as an integral part of the motherboard, I would need enough slots to expand.

Finally, I know that I can make a real screamer for over $1000, but ... Read more

I know almost nothing about editing videos and get confused when I see the menus and controls in editing software. I don't even understand the terms. For instance, I don't see anything that looks straight forward to me as to how to open a video for editing. Instead, I see something that says "Open a Project" and I don't quite understand what to do with a video even if I do figure out how to open it in a "Project".

So, I'm kinda lost.

Here are some of the things I would like to do:

Join two videos together
Take out uninteresting segments that may be several seconds or several minutes long
Compress time, meaning in an instructional how-to-disasemble/reassemble video speed up time through repetitive identical processes, like maybe the removal of several screws.
Convert a larger MTS file to something much smaller so it can be easily downloaded and viewed, or attached to an e-mail
Remove a single frame from a video file to save as a still image
Brighten a darken a video
Color corrections

These are some of what I would like to do and if I am going to buy a software that will do these things and then learn how to use it, what would be a good one under $150? I've read a little about Adobe Premiere Elements and it looks okay; but, for someone who understands little about what he reads, I would like to have some advice from those who actually do this work regularly.

Still frames from a video are usually poor quality ... (depends on what quality you need) ... I usually use a ScreenShot .. It's the same as WMM's Snapshot view

Other than these restrictions ... WMM is easy to use (and understand) and will probably do what you want to do .. (for free)

I have a friend with an aggravating e-mail service. I've forgotten whether it is MSN, ATT or what. Every thirty days, she has to jump through some hoops or her e-mail is inaccessible. The "hoops" have to do with giving them a phone number to which they can send a text message (she has no cell phone) or sending some kind of e-mail to a separate e-mail address that she must use to verify something. Then her e-mail access is restored.

Frankly, I don't know the exact details of all she has to do as the last time I helped her with it was several months ago.

Depends on a few things. If your peripherals draw their power from the USB connection, then you'll likely need a powered hub. If they are just printers, scanners, etc. that use their own separate plug for power, then a non-powered hub should work just fine. Just make sure that the hub you buy is USB 2.0 to take advantage of the fastest speed possible. Pretty much every hub out there will now be 2.0, but it's a good idea just to check and make sure. It should say right in the packaging.

USB 1.1 devices will work in 2.0 hubs, but when you plug a 2.0 device into a 1.1 hub, the device works significantly slower than it is capable.

Also, look at how many ports you will need. Most hubs feature at least 4 ports, but if you are hooking up multiple devices (cameras, scanners, printers, mice, etc.) then look for one with 8 ports to give you more flexibility.

Q: Hubs??

Is it possible to connect hubs using the "straight thru" outputs as well as the hub to hub uplink. The reason being is I have a hub in the computer room at home with a couple of systems on it, I now want to connect to more sysems upstairs and down stairs. I know I could just use the outputs to staight thru wall sockets to each of these ( up & down ) but I want to put a hub on the end of both of these to extend the network further ( i.e more systems both up & down ). I know I can cover one of these ( say upstairs ) in the right manner i.e hub to hub using crossover cable, but how do I connect to the down stairs hub ( so back to original question, can I use the standard output port to join hubs using straight thru config?) On the downside of this I think I would also lose network bandwidth.

Is there anything I have to consider?

Does it matter if one of the computers is rather old? Both use XP.

Apparently there are now different types - multi TT, single TT.

Is the cord supplied long enough to put the hub on a desk or are they very short so that I must buy 3 ft ones?

Also somone in this forum had mentioned that it is better to have a hub with its own power supply. Would you have any names of such a hub?

And advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Vivienne

First of all you want a USB Hub with its own power supply, some USB peripherals cannot operate on the power supplied by the Mothereboard!! Secondly make sure the hub you buy suppoets USB 2.0 (I dont think there are many 1.1's still around) Just a heads up !! Thirdly most come with a 6 ft cord, but online I have seen extension cords for 99 cents!!! So there you go !!!~

When I first had my pc I bought a usb hub as well. When I started using it I found that the pc would freeze a lot. It was ok online but picture editting was guarentteed to do it everytime. I was told that maybe the system was being overloaded and disabling one or two usb ports may help (pc had 4 and hub had 4 but I was only using 6 anyway) so I disabled the two in the front and haven't had the problem since. Now I could really do with an extra port and wondered if a hub with it's own power source would be better?

A:usb hubs

In general, yes, they should - whenever you increase the number of ports there is a chance of overloading, though.
There are many quirks with USB- depending on your version of Windows, system type, motherboard and chipset, there may be updated drivers for onboard USB available from either the maker of the computer, or the motherboard manufacturer. If you use a VIA based system, there are updated drivers available. Win95 and Win98 have system updates available.
The site below has a pretty good explanation of all this, if you want to look for info about updates that may be available.

Most good self powered hubs have overcurrent protection built in. There are USB 2.0 hubs out now, but you need 2.0 on the system to use full capacity of 2.0, you can get this by installing a USB 2.0 add-in PCI card. USB 2.0 devices work plugged to 1.1 ports, just not as hi-speed devices, and 1.1's work in 2.0 ports, same effect, they are what they are.

I am interested in getting a USB hub so I can easily connect my GPS, digital camera, etc to my docking station. Anything I should know on what to look for? I am going to Office Max since I have some credit there, they have some Belkins, they all seem pretty much the same, any advice?

Hi guys!

I've run out of USB ports on my computer and I'm thinking of getting a HUB.
Are these safe...
Maybe something like This one.

Obviously, the gimmicky ones are cool etc, but in general how safe are USB HUBs with say 4 or even 7 ports on?

Many thanks

I think this one will probably be better?
Doesn't need an external powersource, slimmer and faster?

I'm unsure whether or not I have USB 2.0 - and I desperately need it in order to be able to use my new (expensive) ipod!!!

I've looked in Device Manager (see attached) and think the highlighted one is a USB 2.0 port - but I don't know where it is!

I have 2 USB ports on the front of my tower, and 1 on the back - into which is plugged a USB hub which has room for 4 more devices.

If I plug my ipod into the hub, it doesn't respond at all. If I use one of the ones on the front of the tower it will recognise the device, but I can't synchronise.

PLEASE HELP!

I have an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard which has 2 ports that are USB2. When I plug my gaming mouse and my SteelSeries 5HV2 USB sound card which are both USB2 and check under USB Root Hub devices, it shows that they are running in Full Speed and not on the High Speed USB Root Hubs. I thought all 4 USB ports on the back of my computer were USB2 and thus the USB2 devices plugged in those ports will run at High Speed or USB2 speed, but it seems like that's not the case. Can someone help me figure out what's going on and why it's like this. I can post screenshots just tell me what I should snap.

Thanks!

Hi all.

I know that it's possible to share an Internet connection between two PCs without routers, switch or hubs.
so I believe it is also possible to create a LAN between two computers with just an Ethernet cable.
How do I go about it? do I just go hook those two PCs together put a Workgroup name, and start playing games and sharing files?
or are there any other than ordinary configurations that I should be doing?

Hope someone can help quick, I'm excited with my new Gears of war game which I want to play with my bother. comparatively

After having some issues with usb devices opening the new hardware wizard everytime no matter what I connected, It was suggested I remove the USB devices in the device manager, reboot and xp will rebuild them. I did just that, but every time I start the computer I get the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard" 5 times. I have tried locating the software for what ever it is looking for both automatically and manually, but nothing is found, so I cancel and I end up with 5 Unknown Devices under Other Devices with yellow question marks. The USB hubs used to be listed under the Host controllers which is under USB serial bus contollers, but they are not. I have tried reinstalling the MB drivers with no luck. MB is a Soyo SY-P4I865PE with SP3 installed. I find nothing on the internet ANYWHERE that talks specifically about this, I have found a few things close but usually its what I have already tried. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hello,

Thinking about a new HP Envy 750xt desktop PC.

Only seems to come with 4 USB Ports, unless there are some on the back also.
Don't think so, though, but can't find a pix of rear.

Anyway, I have quite a few USB gadgets plugged into my present PC, which has 6.

If I get one or more powered USB Hubs to allow me to use what I now have on this new PC, am I likely to run into any problems ?
Caveats ?

Is only 4 more or less a standard these days, or is HP really penny pinching ?
How's the rest of their quality these days ? Opinions ?

Thanks,
Bob

A:Powered USB Hubs ?

I don't know the typical number of USB ports for a new computer now, but I've used a powered hub for years with my desktop systems and have had absolutely no problems with the devices I connect to them. These include portable hard drives for backup, connections for managing content on usb flash drives and mp3 players, and charging for the latter. I believe many of the caveats for hubs were directed at the non-powered ones.

and when i tried plugging in the printer it wouldnt detect it either...also in the devices manager thingy "universal serial bus controllers" is not there...but on my other system its there...and it detects fine...

i dont know whats wrong please help...thanks in advance

would connecting 2 12port hubs (10/100) to a switch 5 port split the hubs to a 50mbps connection?

A:Switches with 2 10/100 Hubs

Depends on what kind of traffic it will be.

If both hubs want to talk to the same device attached to the switch all the time then you will get 50Mbit per hub on average.

Assuming your network looks like this:

hub
\
switch - uplink
/
hub

If both hubs want to talk to the uplink all the time then on average the speed per hub will be less than 50Mbps. If the hubs want to talk to each other for example then the speed between them will be 100Mbit.

I am about to expand the number of networked computers at work from 4 to approx 20 while at the same time upgrading to an ADSL connection. When going to buy more hubs, it was suggested that switches may be better. Why? My understanding is hubs work at the physical level and switches at the data level. What's the advantage of a switch?

A:switches vs hubs

The big difference is speed and possibly distance. A hub essentially just connects the wires so data can be passed between the connected devices. All devices plugged into a hub will share available bandwidth and will receive all data passed through the hub no matter which computer it was aimed at. A switch repeats all data to the appropriate port so each port gets it's own bandwidth and data is only sent to the computer it was intended for.

DISCLAIMER: I believe this info to be correct but I an not an expert in this area so if someone feels that I erred please let me know.

our business network was set up several years ago and I think we do not have enough switches and hubs or maybe need an additional server, I would appreciate any suggestions on how to improve the setup. We have had problems with workstations losing connection to the server. Most of the problems are in room #3

we have 4 workstations, os XP, pro. and 11 workstations, os 2000, pro. the server os 2003 server. Our cables are run through the ceilings and then down the walls to the computers.

workstation #1, room #1, 250' from server

workstation #2, room #2, 30' from server

workstation #3,4,5,&6, room #3, 40' from server

workstation #7, room #4, 30' from server

workstations #8,9,& 10 room #5, 50' from server

workstations #11,12,13,14 &15 are in same room as server

the server is connected to a router with a firewall for our broadband .

What we have now is workstations #1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,&10 are all connected to a hub in room #3

The hub is connected to a switch that is on the wall above the server.

Workstations #2,11,12,13,14, &15 are connected to the switch. The switch is then connected to a hub that is on a shelf above the server.

All computers need to have internet access and printer and file sharing.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

A:where to put swiches and hubs?

Well, first off, I'd replace any hubs with switches if you have any significant bandwidth traffic to the server. I'd also minimize the number of switches/hubs that are daisy-chained. Your hub in room #3 goes through a switch, then through another hub before it reaches the server. That doesn't really make much sense.

In truth, with a network this small, I'd have home runs from all of the machines to a common point in the server room, and have a single 24 port switch with a gigabit port for the server. Install a gigabit card in the server, and you'll ease many bottlenecks in this system. Since most of the network traffic probably goes through the server, adding the bandwidth there makes the most sense.

Much of the time, dropping connections and other network errors are simply poor cabling. You might want to check to make sure the cables are all wired correctly, and the connections are solid. I wish I had a nickel for every time I've fixed cables that the "professionals" wired before I got to the site to setup the network. For shorter runs of cable, mis-matched pairs will actually sorta' work, but will result in lots of connection issues, sound familiar?

I really doubt you need another server unless you have some heavy-duty data intensive applications really slamming the one you have. You didn't mention what the application mix was, or the configuration of the server, so it's pretty hard to be more specific. I think fixi... Read more

What is the difference between setting up a network with a SWITCH vs a HUB. Or what about a ROUTER? My main purpose is setting up a network to ge the most effective MCSE training if possible.

Which provides the best quality network?

A:Switches vs hubs

Plain switches and hubs serve a very similar function. In general, the switch is the superior solution, since it will potentially allow higher total network throughput.

HUB - All traffic from any port is repeated to all ports.

Switch- Broadcast traffic is routed to all ports (usually small volume). Addressed traffic is routed to the specific port who's MAC address is in the destination header field.

In an 8 port switch, it's possible to have four full bandwidth conversations going on at once, with a hub, you'd only have the bandwidth for one such conversation.

The typical broadband router is really a WAN router and a small switch on the LAN side. The reason for the router over the switch is to share an Internet connection, since it allows all the networked systems access to the Internet connection.
