I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Strange question...

The motherboard temperature sensor is not on the surface of a chip package or somewhere inside the heatsink
The exact location depends on your motherboard model.. Grab a magnifying glass and look for some interesting bits?

Mind you, by messing around with superglue, you may have done more harm than good. The glue+heatsink combinarion may have worse thermal conductivity than just plain airflow over the chip.

Strange question, but here -

I was in a Yahoo chat room the other day, and somebody became upset at another chatter. This person was able to enable some type of command within the chat room that literally locked up my computer, as well as everybody else’s I would guess. A series of never ending codes ran across my screen. The only thing I was able to do was to cut the power to my computer to get out. My guess is that it somehow locked up the CPU in some way, as it tried to process all of the continuous information.

I am curious what this was, and how the person did it (I am NOT looking for the specifics as far as trying it myself)

Hey all, I have a friend with who asked me a very weird question. He said "Is it possible to know if a cd or dvd has been copied." He meant this as in, is there anything that happens to the original disc, can somebody tell if an original disc has been used to aid in copying. For why he wants to know this I honestly do not know as he is been very secretive like he normally is (hhmm fishy). Anyway I told him that I don't think its possible at all to tell if an orignal disc has been used to make a copy, but he wanted me to ask around lol. Does anyone else think an original disc would show clues whether it has been used in the aiding of copying lol.

A:Strange CD + DVD Question

As far as I know one can't tell weather an original has been copied, but one can usually tell is a disk is the original or not. Original have special numbers, label etc. which can't be copied as they are physically on the disk.
One can tell the difference between an Original cd of NFS-UG2 for instance and a copy.

I run a server which serves files and internet to about 30 client computers.
I now need to create some sort of VPN on a second server/computer using the same internet connection which can NOT allow discovery of that first server or any of its files. (basically 1 server and one VPN both working mutually exclusive from same internet source) the VPN and files on that second server also needs to be VERY secure.
any suggestions?

I was thinking of setting up a second computer and just run Himachi but how safe is that? how can I keep that computer and connecting users from discovering the second server?

It's a bit above my level so any advanced answers with noob explanations would rock

Now I am building a system for a friend, using an Asus rampage III Gene motherboard.

I went to there website to get there list of supported ram, now there list gives me a part number for the ram while most sites that I buy ram from give a ram model number.

Now my question is how do I convert the part # to the model #?

I had once found a site that converted it for me but no longer can find it, now if someone could point me to a site or describe to me how to translate it I would appreciate it.

Skype used to let me stream whatever my computer was playing through my microphone to the person I was skyping with. For example, I could play a youtube video and she'd hear my youtube audio through my mic. This is no longer the case. How do I go back to this? If I plug out and plug in my USB microphone again, she can hear both me and the youtube audio(or any audio I'm playing). However, then I can't see her (video freezes) or hear her.

Basically, I want her to be able to listen to the audios I'm playing on my computer through my microphone. Even if I get the mic real close to the speakers, skype samples that audio and gradually mutes it for her.

Ok, here is the lowdown. I have my upstairs computer and my downstairs laptop connected via a Belkin Wireless router. I am using a belkn wireless card in the laptop also. I set up my network a ffew months bakc and everything seemed fine. Now just this week my laptop wont network with my upstairs pc anymore. I cna still get on the internet just fine, but sharing files is the problem. Here is where im very confused though, I pin the router and the computer from the laptop and everything is fine. The upstairs computer see the shared files on the laptop fine also, and even stranger my laptop sees my printer just fine too, but wont see any of the files on the upstairs computer. Ive got windows firewalls turned off and nothing has been switched around. IN the middle of last week the computer kept losing signal with the router but after disabling and fixing it its fine now, so im at like 95% signal on the laptop. Im soo confused here, anyone know what the problem might be, thansk in advance for the time and help!

A:Strange networking question...

Have you checked Simple File Sharing is enabled on all pc's?
Whats the go with your file sharing? Are you wanting to map a drive or have already mapped a drive & now it wont work? Try re-doing it in that case ... but apart from that it cant be anything too technical could it? I mean from what I just read there seems to be no problem with your Network set-up (but double check maybe just to be sure). Are you using Static IP addresses?

Anyway good luck & post back if resolved or in need of more help :grinthumb

I know this is a weird question, but someone I know seems to think his computer's security has been compromised. He has a wireless card and visits hotels a few times a month, and thinks that some stuff has gotten onto his computer while he was away. I say that while a person can, say, pull up in front of your house and use your satellite, etc., with his laptop and wireless . . . that's something different and signals cannot "cross" while in a public place. I say that other people's stuff, like sites they visit, cannot jump up and appear as history, cookies, spyware, etc on someone else's computer. He thinks that the malware, adware, and spyware that were on his computer caused his computer to visit several sites, repeatedly, and turn the computer on and "use it".

Can someone second me on this that this is not possible?

I bought a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse for my laptop. After trying ot for a few days I decided I didn't want it, I boxed it up and returned it to the store the next day after work. When I got home and started to use my laptop again, I noticed it will not go into standby.
It displays the following message...

"The device driver for the "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS /2 Keyboard device is preventing machine from entering standby. PLease close all applications and try agian. If problem persist you may need to update this driver."

I wrote logitech and asked them what to do and they said after careful consideration of my problem they decided it was a Microsoft problem. It does not interfer with the running of the computer at all, but it just will not go into Standby. I am considering giving this laptop to my niece and purchasing a new one so I would like to solve this problem.

This has got to be the strangest thing ever to happen to me. I had an AGP ATI video card with 256 mb on board which I do not remember the exact model number. It was about 8 years old. I have recently bought a flat screen 1080i 24 inch led TV which works great as a monitor ( and I mean great) Eventually the ATI card went bad and a friend had lying around an older NVIDIA TNT2 model 64 pro64 with only 64 meg on board. I almost flipped out to find that this older NVIDIA card was a 100 times better. Now everything is so crystal clear even at 1920 by 1080 my screen looks almost like an apple retina display. even the colors are so much brighter. The biggest complaint I had with the ATI card was poor contrast which I blamed on my TV/monitor, But no more. How could this possibly be? it makes absolutely no sense.

A:Very strange video question (:

Not sure. But I had an opposite experience many years ago. I had a p2 300 with an ATi Rage Fury Pro (I think) and played EV Nova on it, shortly after I built a 1Ghz Athlon Thunderbird system and had a GF2MX 32Meg card and it didn't look as good as the ATi.

Perhaps you didn't have the correct/best driver installed.

I apologize for the length of this post in advance, but it is the only way I can ask the question.
Here goes...
I have different profiles set up in Vista Ultimate because of the different uses I have. For example, I don't load the Office Suite if I am designing a video. Now, I am not sure that my thinking is correct on that, but my goal is to conserve resources for the applications I need to use at that time.
I have edited all the apps that load at startup as best I can. However, I am also trying to eliminate the number of apps (quite a few) that I load in the Start Menu as well. That means that I manually go through the individual profiles' Start Menu folder to remove what I don't want to use for that profile.
As you have probably already figured out, as I install new apps or do upgrades to the ones that I have there is a problem. Except for a few apps, they typically place the Start Menu shortcuts under "All Users".
I have a third party software that can hide various shortcuts in the related profiles, but I am not sure if that will prevent them from loading (the shortcuts, not the apps).
It seems that the question is actually complex. Am I really saving on resources by segregating the Start Menu shortcuts? Will that third party app help? Or does any of this work at all? If so, are the changes worthwhile or negligible?

Hopefully, I haven't confused the issue too much.

This may seem a dumb question, but a friend of mine has just sent me an email. She was accused of sending someone nasty emails, to prove her innocence she sent another person her ISP's . Now her firewall has slowed down and someone has told her that the person she gave her ISP's to is reading her emails. Is this possible, far fetched or could it be something to do with the actual firewall?. Thanks Magi

A:Security, silly/strange question.

It's a bit difficult to sort that out, but if her firewall is disabled (I don't know what is meant by "slowed down" then unauthorized programs can access the net or visa versa. She should not have given out her IP -- (internet protocol address). If she has a "fixed" one then it is quite possible someone else is accessing her system, especially if the firewall has been compromised.

She needs to do an updated scan for viri and trojans and probably remove and reinstall her firewall.

With the newer systems coming without PS2 connections at all, I'm looking for another KVM switch for my work bench that will work with both the older systems with PS2 connections and the newer ones with only USB.

I ran across this KVM switch and I am taken aback by the idea it presents. It supposedly handles keyboard and mouse, as well as video through the video terminal. To be clear, it is a single video-cable-only connection between the KVM and the computer and it claims to handle the keyboard and mouse through some unused pins in the video connector.

This seems almost incredible. Does anyone have any experience with this type of KVM or know of anywhere on the 'net where I can get reliable evaluations?

Last night, I setup an old AirLink101 AR430W wireless router I have as a wireless access point. The router functioned fine as an access point except I noticed some strange ping behavior when connecting to the LAN through it from a desktop PC.

When the PC was connected wirelessly through this access point, I could intermittently ping "www,yahoo.com". I would ping it once and get replies back. Then, I would ping it again and get a "host not found" kind of message. Then, I would ping it again and would get replies back.

When the PC was connected hard wired through this access point (the AR430W has a 4-port Ethernet 10/100 switch), I would be able to ping Yahoo reliably and repeatedly. Once I switched back to the wireless connection, the pings were intermittent again.

I did have the AR430W configured in "SuperG" wireless mode and the wireless adapter in the PC is a D-Link nano USB 'N' adapter (I forget the model). It was late so I didn't think to change the AR430W from "SuperG" mode to regular 802.11g mode.

Any clues as why ping would work intermittently when connecting wirelessly and then work reliably when connecting hard wired through the same device, the AR430W?

I'm just asking the question. The AR430W is no longer in service and I figure there's something wrong with the wireless part of the AR430W but I wanted to pose the question in the event there might be something else going on I wasn't aware of. ... Read more

A:Question about a wireless router and strange ping behavior

Only a guess, but I'd suspect the "SuperG" mode, as those turbo things are problematic when the AP and adapter are not a matching set.

A friend recently changed ISPs, from Comcast cable to AT&T DSL. She was sent a 2WIRE 2701HG-B DSL modem/wireless router w/ 4-port switch built-in. She also has a Linksys WRT54G v8 wireless router w/ 4-port switch.

I put the 2WIRE modem into bridged mode so we could continue using the Linksys router for wireless connectivity. I made sure to disable the wireless support in the 2WIRE router.

I had run into a problem where the Linksys router wouldn't reestablish the PPPoE connection automatically if it was lost. A firmware upgrade to version 8.00.5 seems to have addressed that problem BUT now when the router is connected, it's getting a strange subnet mask. It might not be strange but it's completely unexpected.

The IP address is aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd and the subnet mask is The default gateway IP address is aaa.bbb.fff.ggg, so the assigned IP address and the default gateway are on two completely different subnets but in the same class B IP network.

All of the important machines are able to connect to the Internet ok so I'm not sure if the above subnet mask is anything I should be concerned with.

Any comments or ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, I'll give you all a quick rundown of my problem, and what i did to try and fix it.

First off, i have a 60gb ide drive for my windows installation (3 other drives for storage), and i got a 150gb Raptor X, which is sata. I cloned the 60gb boot drive onto the raptor, but it didnt boot, and said the HAL was corrupt. My guess would be that the hardware abstraction layer got all defunct when it saw the new sata drive, but was expecting an ide? After all that, i decided to run a chkdsk on the ide drive, and clone it again, to see if it booted. I used the recovery console on a windows xp pro disc, but alas, i couldnt chkdsk because i forgot my admin password. Stupid me. Well, i thought i'd reset the admin password with the windows xp repair installation. (Hit shift+f10 when it is "installing devices" in the gui part of the windows installation, and modify users from the cmd prompt.) But, i didnt get that far. after it copied all the files in dos, and would normally go back and continue installation, it restarted the computer and flashed the windows logo, normal stuff. then the logo went away and the computer restarted. Now it's in an endless loop, and does the same if i try the repair installation again. I really need to get this drive back up and running somehow.

Any help is appreciated.

Also, i used Paragon HDD manager 6 to clone the hard drives.

Hello Family !
I have an Emachine W3653 with Vista on it.
The computer had some viruses and trogans on it so I ran Malwarebytes, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Super Anti Spyware, multiple times, until they all came up cleanwith no infections.
But for some reason, I can sit and watch the "cookies folder" , without having Internet Explorer opened up, and cookies keep popping up as I watch. I can clean out all the cookies and they just keep comming back, even though I don't go on line.
Also, Avast is popping up errors about blocking malicous URLs even when the computer is just sitting there.
I have also went on line and ran Trend Micro House Call, (online scanner) and it even came back with zero infections.
It seems as if something is hooked up to the internet and downloading good and bad cookies. In one minute it downloaded 11 cookies.
I'm stumped on what is doing this ! I have also downloaded all new updates for Maywarebytes, Spybot and Super AntiSpyware and ran them but I still come up with zero infections found, now.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated in helping me figure out whats wrong with this desktop.
Thank you !

To remove the infection, run the command mbr.exe -f (note the space between the e and -f) from a command prompt. Have the user reboot the machine, otherwise the next report may still show (false) infection. Open Windows Explorer and rename the C:\mbr.log to C:\mbr.oldGo to Start > Run and type: cmdpress Ok.At the command prompt, type: cd \press Enter. At the command prompt, type: mbr.exe -f(make sure you have a space before the e and the -f)press Enter. At the command prompt, type: exitpress Enter. It will produce a new report at C:\mbr.log. Please copy/paste the results in your next reply.

I just now noticed something incredibly odd happening in my start menu. The Search option, specifically, where it's supposed to say Search, is replaced with strange lettering. Here's a picture of what it looks like:

About a month or two ago, I got a virus on my desktop.  My husbands IT friend dialed in and cleaned it out for me.  He recommended that I stop using Norton (because of the space it takes up and other reasons.....) and loaded AVG and told me to not use Internet Explorer and to use Firefox (which I have always hated)   He did a scan using Malwarebytes and found 160+ on my computer.  After he was done (5+ hours) I still seemed to have issues. (all programs would end up at "not responding" eventually, sometimes right after restarting the computer)
A friend of mine's husband is an IT guy, so I took my computer to him, he found some add on's that should be deleted in my Inbox, but that was all.  He messed around on firefox, played around for a couple hours with different programs, etc.  Nothing went to not responding.  I brought the computer home and after about 5 minutes on firefox... Not responding.  My inbox went to not responding... etc.  And this is still happening.
While my comuter was being fixed the 2nd time, I started using my lap top.  (which I hardly use at home at all)  I started having the same issues.  (Computer is Windows 7, laptop is Vista)  All programs started going to Not responding, taking long time to load, etc.
Last week we went on vacation to Washington DC, and I took my laptop.  Issues seemed to disappear.  Got home... guess what.&... Read more

I feel like a moron just asking that question because it seems so impossible
Modem viruses are rare, but possible!.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
1)  Double-click on mbam-setup.exe, then click on Run to install the application, follow the prompts through the installation.

Click on Update Now, after Malwarebytes is updated FIRST DISCONNECT THE CONNECTION TO THE MODEM then click on Scan.
If this isn't the first time you have run this version, then you will see an image like the one below.  Click on Scan

You will be prompted to update Malwarebytes, to do so click on Update Now.
3)  The scan will automatically run now.

4)  When the scan is complete the results will be displayed.  Click on Quarantine All, then click on Apply Actions

5)  To complete any actions taken you will be asked if you want to restart your computer, click on Yes
6)  Please post the Malwarebytes log.
To find your Malwarebytes log, download mbam-check.exe from here and save it to your desktop.
To open the log double click on mbam-check.exe on your desk... Read more

I am running short on time, so i must describe this breifly.

I am fixing my friends computer, the mobo died, he got " the red light".

I replaced his mobo, and now everything powers up, but the computer doesn't post, there is no video what so ever.

I have tried swapping every componet from my working computer.
-the cpu

I have tried taking out the cmos battery and putting it back in.

I would try clearing the cmos jumper, but for some reason this new board does not have one.

Now, another strange problem. The board starts, for about 2 seconds, stops, and restarts itself. I have checked the LEDs multiple times. I have tried reseting the graphics card, and the cpu, and the ram, and have tried the ram in different slots

I am now clueless. Would love help. Thanks

A:Strange, strange problem

Me thinks your new mobo has a problem too.

Okay, so I have a little bit of a problem, I turned my computer on this morning only to find that all the folder icons had been replaced by 'no icon' icons (the paper with the stuff on it).

Now, when I click my folders, it brings me to the search window, with that folder in the search area. This means I need to right click every time I want to open one of my (now) ugly looking folders.

I've gone through folder options, and under the list of options only 'find' and 'open in onenote' comes up... not open or explore. It says I can add a new type, but I browse and I doubt there's a program to open folders.

Any help? Yes... I've tried System Restore

A:Strange, strange problem

There's a freeware program called "tweakui" that has a tool "rebuild icons" that may fix this. Another program "regseeker" has one as well.

I haven't been on windows 98 or 98SE alot so I was wondeing, If you put a Cd-writer (burner) in a computer with windows 98 or 98se (which I just did) why when ;you go to my computer and right click on the E dirve is there not a recording tab and other tabs like in windows xp, I know the answer will probably be------because your not using XP----------But I was wondering. The one I put in had NERO with it and I like NERO anyway however I would like to know for future purposes.

Why when you go to mycomputer and right click on the E drive (the burner) don't you have the recording tab and the rest like XP. I like doing it that way in XP where you can move all files or copy files and then go to the burner and say write these files to cd.

Does windows 98 or 98SE have this and I am just missing it or is a burning program like NERO or another the only way to use the burning in 98 or 98SE?

Thanks for the help

A:Solved: Windows 98 and/or 98SE-question about burning CDs, is there a record tab etc-Question

lol, you answered your own question, windows 95,98,98se,and ME don't support cd burning, except with 3rd party software. When you purchase any of the NT systems (ie: xp, NT 4, Server 2003, 2000 PRO etc...) all have the NT kernel which if you look during your install say " Windows (whatever version) is built on NT technology" and "You now have built in CD burning" soon and perhaps with the upcoming service pack 2, it will start coming with DVD burning capability.

I believe the only windows kernel out that currently supports cd burning is the NT one

Outlook Express Question:

I just bought a new computer and want to move my spam filters (message rules and blocked senders list) to my new computer. It has taken me two years to build this filter system which has hundreds of rules and blocked senders. It was very effective cutting my spam from about 75-125 messages a day to about 3 or 4 a day.

Jumpdrive question:

I am using a 128 mb jumpdrive to move files from old computer to new. Can I compress this jumpdrive to double it's capacity and if I do is there any downside to doing so?

Thanks for all help offered.
