I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having problems installing the update kb4041681.  Everytime I turn on my computer the update tries to install but always fails.  The error code I am getting is 80004005.
I would appreciate any assistance as shutdown and reboot times are Looooooooong!

It seems like you have a software preventing Windows from shutting down properly.
Follow this tutorial and (you can do it in safe-mode as well) in-order to achieve a clean startup,
in-order for the changes to take place you need to restart the PC after completing,
once booted wait a couple of minutes for the OS to boot-up completely and shutdown Windows normally.
If that does it great, if not report back.

Windows Update installation of Win7 SP1 (updating existing version of 6.1.7600.16385) reports the install as successful until reboot, then says successful and unsuccessful in the same dialog box. Error ID is 80242016. Subsequent run of windows update shows SP1 not installed. Problem repeats, even after following all steps in troubleshooting, including running the recommended hot fix for KB 947821, troubleshooting, & turning off anti-virus. Also, the windows update troubleshooter identifies my system as AMD64 architecture even though it is Intel I7 2600K. System infomation id's the CPU correctly. Any suggestions? Dell Studio laptop running Vista home premium SP2. Was prompted for 3 updates from MS yesterday, on reboot system blue screens and I have to recover to the point prior to the updates. 2 of the updates are failing with error 80242016. I tried this several times with the same result. In searching it appears this is a fairly common error in Vista updates but I can not find any solutions. Does anyone know what an 80242016 error means?

I also emailed MS update support, maybe they will provide something useful. If so I will post it here.

A:Vista Update Error 80242016?

Have a look in the windowsupdate.log in C:\Windows and search for the error - it may give more information.
Another thing I have tried successfully is to download the Kbxxxx update executable from the windows site and execute it - it often gives you a more detailed reason for the failure e.g. permission problems on a particular file - you then have to use regedit and fix the permissions, run the executable again and it will either run or you have to regedit and fix more permissions until it does run (tedious)!

Hey all,

So I am currently reinstalling Windows on my dad's old laptop after the hard drive decided up die on us, and I stumbled on a problem that's a bit too hard for me to fix.

Namely, I am completely unable to install any Windows Update. Not even MSE will install.

I tried running SURT, but got error code 0x8000247
I also tried running SFC /SCANNOW, it ran the verification fase until 98% and then stated that there where unfixable problems.

The displayed error codes are:
In WU: "8024A000"
In SURT: "0x8000247"
Whilst installing MSE: "0x80070643".

Attached you will find CBS.log and MSINFO with my system specs.
Cheers and many thanks in advance,

Hello sevenforums, Today I installed 8 important updates one failed - "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2898785)". I use firefox should I ignore the failed update or make sure that it is installed properly so I don't cause future problems. The update is "Important" it says so i the view installed updates.

One of the 8 updates was - "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" I uninstalled IE11 because it messed up my weather desktop gadget, and I didn't plan on using IE11.

I tried the standalone installer for the failed updated and got the "this update is not applicable to your computer" message. The only thing I can think of doing now is using system restore and trying to install the updates again. My antivirus was not disabled during the installation of the updates. Should I disable it? It never caused problems with any of my previous updates.

Thank you for any help.

I have been having some recurring problems with the attempts to install some automatic windows updates.

Security Update for Microsoft Office Acess 2007

I am not able to install these updates, maybe any other updates in general. After attempting the install the following install window says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Next to it an error code 80070643. Microsoft provides a solution to the problem, by re-installing Microsoft NET. Framework. They also provide a link to the program NET. I followed Microsoft's instructions to solve the issue, though I've been put at a standstill. I have used the NET. Framework Cleanup tool to uninstall NET. Framework and it's components (states that it uninstalls all versions, 1.1 SP1 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5.) Then afterwards instructed to reinstall NET. Framework, specifically in an order, 3.5 then, 1.1, then 1.1 SP1. I start with 3.5, then as the installation starts it says that to contiunue installation I must turn off or on windows features in the Control Panel. I do so and turn off all Windows features. Then continue and it again states to turn off features in the Control Panel.

I wasn't able to continue the process, and I am also concerned that this is the same error that made me unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials, (as t... Read more

Windows Update has been trying to install the same 9 updates now since yesterday. Prior to that it's updated with no problems. It goes through all the motions, including having to restart the computer to finalize the updates and it goes through that also, then the Update window says it failed and the error code.
WU then starts the whole thing all over again. Right now it's still on my taskbar and the restart button on the pc has the WU icon ready to finalize after restarting.

Hi Michael:

Did you try to install the update again manually?
There are some errors that are simply a matter of bad timing, and they can be caused by busy websites and slow Internet connections, or a number of other factors. Sometimes you can fix these problems by trying to install the updates again.
1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clicking Change PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery.
2. Tap or click Check now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC.
3. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.

So few days ago at night my computer fans got louder than usual and i just closed my computer but after that night my cpu usage and overall performance has gone worse than what it has ever been.
I can barely keep software's up anymore without them slowing down my whole computer and i'm not sure if it's all because this update that has keep failing and the fact that my computer isn't up to date without it.

Things i have tried to fix the cpu usage/ windows update problem:
?disabled most startup programs
?did sfc/scannow but it didn't help
?ran all avast cleanups (no viruses found)
?re installed avast and avast cleanup
?disabled some unnecessary parts of avast to help with cpu but it didn't fix the problem
?made sure that there isn't multiple antivirus
softwares up at the same time
?opened up my computer case and cleaned fans, case etc from dust (i think this helped a bit with the cpu but my computer still can't handle any games that it was able to handle
few days ago)
?tried downloading and manually installing the update but even then it failed
?ran Windows Update troubleshooter and tried to
fix windows updates but it didn't help either
?disabled superfetch but it didn't do anything so i turned
it back on

+ my computer has 201 Gt of free space so i don't think that's causing the cpu problem either.
i'd be really happy if someone could help me with these issues that i am facing.

Can't get IE 11 to install, error code 9C59 after running SURT. The old error message was 9c47. Updates shows that IE10 is an optional update, if you attempt install it ends on 9C48. Likely because IE10 is already installed. (saw somewhere that is what the 48 code means in the error message).

Before reading this forum I read I should uninstall ie10. That was not good, got browser with no address bar and it was not in full screen. Ran system restore and found this forum.

A:Anniversary update won't install - no error code

Hi, download the ISO manually and create a bootable medium (which is useful in various circumstances).
(How - where- see the Tutorial section or search the net- not difficult).

That way you download once and can retry and have it available for other purposes. Also you avoid issues with Windows update.

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Disable any AV. Disconnect any devices you don't need. Uninstall any program that affects or modifies your GUI.

Do a clean boot then try the upgrade using the Win 10 DVD/USB.

If it fails again, you can have a look at the log:
Windows Update logs are now generated using ETW (Event Tracing for Windows).
Please run the Get-WindowsUpdateLog PowerShell command to convert ETW traces into a readable WindowsUpdate.log.

Hello, I hope someone can help.

I can't install Internet Explorer 11. Windows Update goes through the installation, and then fails with a "Code 9C59" error. Been fighting this for weeks, tried the update nearly a dozen times, still fails.

I have run SURT several times, and it seems to complete normally, but it hasn't fixed the problem. Just ran it again this evening, as instructed in the "Windows Update Posting Instructions".

Then ran 'sfc /scannow' as instructed (this is probably the 5th time I've run it). It completes with a message that it found some corrupted files but could not fix them.

Finally, ran the IE11 update again, which failed again , and grabbed a screen shot.

The screen shot of the update error is attached. I also tried to attach the Zip'ed CBS logs, but the upload failed: think it may be too big (it's 25 MB). Any suggestions on how to work around that?

Appreciate any help you can give me.

A:Cannot Install IE 10 update - Error Code 9C59

I suspect that part of your problem is due to strange time-shifts that appear in your CBS log.

Also, you have a large number of filters present - this may be overloading your system.

What AV's are currently installed - and what other AV's have ever been installed?

Thanks in advance

I am running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 and everytime I try to install IE11 from Windows update it gives me the 9C48 error. I've tried downloading and installing the IE 11 standalone installer but it keeps giving an error that "Setup cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer".

I have been searching Google and these forums and I noticed people attach their CBS and checkSUR logs after running sfc /scannow, so I am doing that as well in hopes of someone being able to help.

I have tried so many different fixes, CheckSUR, subinacl, MS Hot fixes, uninstalling IE11 etc. I hope someone is able to help. Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Error code 80070490, Update 2790113 fails to install

Hi zatoichi,

As you've correctly isolated, Windows in your system has failed to install an update on numerous occasions:

2013-02-28 17:06:12, Info CBS Failed to get session package state for package: Package_3_for_KB2564958~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~ [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
Though unlikely, you may still try resetting the 'Windows Components' to see if that helps: How do I reset Windows Update components?

If the issue persists, please try a manual install: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ng=en&id=27653

You may also refer to the following 'Microsoft Article' that recommends 'Windows Repair' in this case, if 'System Update Readiness Tool' fails to fix it: Windows Update error 80070490

Hope this helps.

I uninstalled the previous Java update (jre-7u71-windows-i586.exe) I had on my laptop. Then tried to install the latest update (jre-8u31-windows-i586.exe). It would start to install, then I would get error code 1603.

I tried to reinstall the older update. It would not reinstall. Same error code 1603. I guess I am currently without Java.

That sums up the basic problem. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

I recieve error C80003FA whenever I do a Windows Update run. It doesn't get past the stage of checking for updates.

I've tried several fixes including:
- Waiting 15 minutes and running Windows Update again.
- Letting Windows Update run on its own schedule.
- SFC /Scannow
- Renaming the Catroot2 Folder.
- Running 3 different Fixit tools.
- Clean windows install.

After each and every one of those fixes I've tried windows update and I still get error C80003FA.

SFC Scannow has previously said no errors, but the last run through it said there were unfixable errors. I've got the log, though for brevity's sake I will keep it until someone asks for it.

Any ideas?

I didn't see any posts about this, so I hope I am not double posting.

After removing a drive load of viruses, I am still not able to update Windows Vista to Service Pack 1. I have even tried to create a new admin user account in hopes that this would work, but no go. I tried running sfc.exe / scannow from the CMD and it did report that it was unable to repair wextract.exe. Also, the file reportingevents.txt located in %system root%\windows\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.txt lists "Windows Update Client failed to detect with error 0x80070490".
Although, I think Windows Defender can update. I need to take a break.

Hello all. I'm running Windows 7 Pro x32 and I'm having problems getting Service Pack 1 (and various other fixes) to install via Windows update. Every time I try it gets about 50% through the progress bar and then fails because of Code 80073712. I've tried a bunch of different Microsoft Fix-Its with no luck.About three weeks ago I got infected with some malware and a rootkit. I've been getting help cleaning out the infection from ST over in the virus help forum. My computer is working more or less normally now, except for the fact that Windows Update refuses to install updates. ST tried a bunch of things to fix this (here's a link to that thread if you're interested in seeing what's been tried so far: Here), but still hasn't been able to get it to work properly. ST suggested that I post a a new thread here and see if anyone else had any ideas on what else to try.So that's pretty much it. Thank in advance for any advice you might be able to give.

Greetings fellow Windows enthusiasts,

I was asked to update our Windows 2008 R2 server from IE 10 to IE11, and it will not install properly.  I have looked up several solutions to this issue, so far nothing has worked.

I disabled McAfee HBSS in safe mode, restarted the PC and tried to run Windows Update managed by a WSUS server.  The update gets approved and pushed out to the 2008 R2 server.  It downloads IE11, tries to install, then fails/errors-out at the last
second.   I have tried this a few times, rebooted and either get error code 9C47 or 9C49.

Some of the fixes I have tried:

I turned of internet connectivity and the anti-virus, that did not workI tried the Windows Update repair tool, that did not work  I tried the Windows System Readiness tool, that did not work   I tried to scan the system files for errors with sfc /scannow
and that did not work  I tried installing the other updates first, restarting and it still fails I removed the server from WSUS and re-added it and it will not update   I tried the stand-alone IE11 installer, and it fails at the very last step and then gives me an error with a link to troubleshoot IE installations   I have uninstalled IE10, and now am totally stuck with the absolutely horrible experience of IE9 SURT returns no errorsSFC returns no errors
