How to connect laptops for a LAN party?

Q: How to connect laptops for a LAN party?

I am going to have a LAN party with about 3 other people. I am wondering what I need for equipment and how to go about creating a Ethernet LAN so we can play together. We want to play P2P, not over the Internet.

Preferred Solution: How to connect laptops for a LAN party?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have a problem that I don't know how to fix.

I've just re-formatted a computer and installed
Win2k, no firewall (atm), Firefox, adaware, and spybot on
an old PII machine. The problem I have is while IE will
connect to the net, Firefox and the update managers
on adaware and spybot will not. I am connecting to the
internet through the default window's dial-up to Earthlink.
Any ideas what I should do to fix this?

Thanks in advance

My computer's internet abilities has once again gone all wierd. Usually when I turn on my computer(win xp home) it automatically connects to the net. But now I have to disable my lan connection, sygate personal firewall then re-enable it to actually connect to the internet. I got adsl and that shouldn't happen.
Now my big gripe here is that windows internet explorer and messenger (msn and windows) both stopped working. IE simply does not show anything when I try to surf the net. Only text shows up and images are those little X's. Most of the time it has the page cannot be displayed error. MSN messenger keeps on popping up with an error message that there is something wrong with my internet connection when I know it is fine. The other computer, my parent's, connected to the router can sign in fine, and I'm using mozilla firefox on this problematic computer.

Is there something wrong with the registry or is there a virus or something really nasty?

Hello I have been having some problems using third party apps on my computer. The problem came out of no where. I was using my pc the night before and everything worked fine and I put it to sleep for the night. The next day after work I get it out of sleep mode and no third party app can connect to the internet. I'm connected to the internet but all my apps such as Steam, Origin, and even like adobe update can't connect. The only apps that can connect are IE and Firefox. I have no fire wall at the moment. Running windows 7. I opened the ports on my router that the apps need. I reinstalled the apps, restarted my computer, reset my router, system restored to a time when everything worked. I'm all out ideas and am hoping someone here can help me. I was thinking about reformatting as a last resort, but I really don't wanna go through the hassle right now. I don't know if my ISP(Verizon) is blocking any port thats no http or what. If you need anymore information I'll get back to you asap. Thanks for your time.

I hope that XBox question is ok here, if not would someone be able to please point me is best direction.

A few months ago son got XBox 360 and plays on line with a few friends through joining what I think is called a Party on XBox Live.

However, the 1 person he wanted to join with he cannot, and that person cannot join with him. They both can join the other friends at same time. I have done several nights of research and best solution suggested at this point is maybe a NAT issue or Port forwarding,

Setup (for us)
ISP Australin Optus with Dynamic IP
Modem Spreedstream 4200 (with NAPT set) with port 3074 forwarded.
To Belkin F5D8233-4v3(01) Router. No port forwarding set at present but did try both 88 and 3074 but not sure about the IP setting due to dynamic IP.
XBox usually connects wirelessly and seems to be no issues with on-line play other than the 1 friend. We have a cable that we have connected directly to the Belkin Router and this made no difference.

We bypassed the Belkin Router last night and he was able to connect to the previously un-connectable friend.

This suggests to me that it may be one of our router settings. Some places on Net suggest it may be too high security on NAT but I cannot see any particular settings on the Router for NAT but it does say it's enabled.

The XBox test for Network does not indicate any issues when you run it.

I did think about trying to set some IP's for internal machines but have no idea how it's done.

About 3 or 4 months ago I switched to a new internet provider whom also sent me a new modem. Problem is, is that this new modem prevents my burglar alarm's dial out alert system from contacting my nominated phone numbers during an activation/test. If I turn off the modem there is no problem, the alarm works perfectly.
This would be fine except that my brother in law lives next door and uses my internet connection so it is inconvenient if I'm away and have to switch the modem off to have the alarm fully functional.

Prior to the provider change over I was using a 3rd party TP-Link TD-W8951ND modem with my prior service provider. This modem caused no problems at all with the function of the burglar alarm when left on.

Therefore, I would like to use the TP-Link modem again but I can't get it to work on the new service. From memory, the modem that was supplied by the new provider was basically 'plug and play' and all I did was just cable it in and there was no keyboard work required. This is why I don't know why the TP modem doesn't work since I didn't change anything.
Evidently, there are some configurations that do need altering but I haven't got a clue.

Any help or ideas?

Tom.

A:How To Connect My 3rd Party Modem To My New Provider's Service?

Hello there, You need to apply the appropriate ADSL and network settings on the modem so it can connect to your new provider's network. The ISP support should provide those. Hope you get it up and running soon.

Hello and thanks in advance,Starting yesterday, when I try to launch most third party programs (Google chrome, Skype, Evernote, Jing, and others) that connect to the internet they will not start and cause windows to say that it has encountered a problem (I have attachd the image of the screen shot)Anyways, I know this started happening on Tuesday morning because when I view the event log any time I try to start an application an error gets thrown. I have tried downloading malwarebytes, however, after I install it, it will not connect to the internet to download the latest updates. It throws an error. So it seems that I can only use Microsoft programs (although dropbox, symantec endpoint protection, and tweetdeck, seem to work) to access the internet, but that may not be the cause at all. I tried uninstalling the programs and reinstalling them, but that didn't work either. My helpdesk is saying nothing is wrong with my computer because the apps that are throwing the error are not supported, which is a bit ridiculous because they are just the ones that are pointing out the problem. Here is the output from my Hijackthis log, and from my eyes I cannot see what is really wrong with my pc. I can install lookinmypc to see everything installed and print out that log if you want as well. Anways, any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated.I ran a full virus scan with symatec endpoint protection and it returned one tracking cookie that it deleted. When I ran malwarebytes ... There are two lap tops in my office that I do the technical support for, they are HP nc6000 that run XP Pro. They are supose to connect and unconnect to the network here in the office when the users need to take them on location. The problem we are having that no one can figure out is, everytime the users bring the lap tops back in the office and attempt to reconnect to the network with them I have to go in a re-map the drives. I have tried to update the nic card drivers, that didn't work. I have asked both users if they are shutting down in the field properly and they say they are (going thru the start menu, shutting down from there). (thinking that that may have something to do with it) At this point I don't have a clue what could be the problem and I am getting sick of having to remap those drives...

Any help, suggestions, advice I would be greatful for.....
could the problem be they are just old laptops?

Hi there,
Before I start to talk about the Latitude 5285, let me explain another tablet that i having which is Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855. Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 smart card reader(NXP chip) is able to connect by 3rd party library (github.com/.../pcsc-sharp), after connected, I can go on to scan card like MiFare Desfire 14443A and ISO/IEC 15693 13.56 MHZ.

Recently, I bought this Latitude 5285. The smart card reader of Latitude 5285 is produced by Broadcom. The software that I created is not able to work with this smart card reader. There are 2 smart card readers under Device Manager’s Smart card readers category which are “Contacted Smart Card Reader” and “Contactless Smart Card Reader”.

I have done tremendous researches on the internet.
Some said that is because contactless reader by default is only for Pre Boot Authentication, 3rd part program is not allow to use it unless turn off something. This website (https://blog.g3rt.nl/enable-dell-nfc-contactless-reader.html) author is telling that Contactless Smart Card Reader need to turn off the CV Radio mode etc by using the Dell ControlVault driver DOS tool called ushdiag.exe.
But I have checked the ControlVault driver of latitude 5285, there is no ushdiag.exe tool provided.
I have checked this Latitude 5285 BIOS Setup. I did not see any related settings that i can deal with.
Any approach to enable it? To me, it seems contactless reader is locked.
Please help.

Thanks and regards,
Fuji

hey everyone,

CenturyLink C1000A wireless router/modem

2x winxp laptops (sp2, sp3)
i can connect all of these devices using the default settings and key except for the 2 winxp laptops. They both detect the network, let me type in the key, but then get stuck at "waiting for network" screen. eventually that screen closes without connecting. im currently online with the sp2 wired directly to the router. any ideas or recommendations?
i can provide more information if anyone thinks it will help, and thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:laptops wont connect to wifi

Install SP3 on the way-out-of-date machine.

For the one that already has SP3 ...

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network and also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi,

So I bought a crossover cable just to connect two laptops. Like, a network. Mine is running on windows 7 and the other laptop is running on Vista. So I configured both laptops to be in the same workgroup (left the homegroup in win7) and configured both NIC's to have an IP in the same class - one of them is 10.1.1.1 and the other one is 10.1.1.2 and subnet masks are the same 255.255.255.0. Now, I should be able to ping each of the laptops. But it pings only from Vista (10.1.1.2) to Win7 (10.1.1.1) and not the other way. Network window in win7 shows some computers in the different network, but in the same building, but does not show the laptop connected with the crossover cable. Network window in win vista does not show any computers. Both computers have some shared folders (for users Guest and Everyone).

I would really like to know what am I doing wrong, and how do I connect these two computers so I could easily transfer some files?

Thanks in advance.

A:Connect 2 laptops with crossover cable

Are you certain that the firewall is configured to allow ECHO REQUESTS on the Vista box. If you cannot ping it, it may be the Windows firewall preventing it from responding.

Hi Deborah and wlecome to Vista Forums

Do you have your router permanently powered up? It is possible that loss of power has caused your router to revert back to its default settings (the same as you would get if you manually reset it). Check its configuration settings by entering http://192.168.0.1 (or the address given in your router's documentation) in the address bar of IE7 and make sure that everything is set correctly, especially the WEP/WPA/WPA2 password (this needs to be identical to that on your laptops in order for them to connect wirelessly - this would explain why they cannot connect via the other router). Refer to the router's documentation and make careful notes as you go on so that you can refer to them again if the need arises. Once you have got your laptops connecting, go back into the router configuration and choose the option to backup your settings. If the same thing happens again, you should be able to use this file to restore your router. Note that setting up a router needs to be done via a direct wired Ethernet connection.
To check all this, power down your router and wait 5 minutes. Power it back up. Are you still able to connect? If not, connect via Ethernet and restore your settings using the backup file you created earlier.
Another possibility is that your router automatically turns off the wireless output on power failure and that this needs to be manually re-enabled.

Sure you can. You configure the two for Ad-Hoc communications.

Hi everyone,

Maybe someone already explained it but i couldn't find it. I apologize.
I have two laptops running Windows 7 Ultimate build 7600,fully updated.
Both of them have wireless network adapter.
I searched on internet and found that one way to connect them is by ad-hoc connection.
I established on one computer ad-hoc connection and on another I connect to that connection.
So both laptops are connected but it says "no network access" and it is not possible to share files between them two.
I created homegroup and there's nothing in that folder.

How to connect two laptops wireless and share files between them?

Thanks.

A:connect two laptops - wireless connection

You don't need to use Homegroup to share files, but that up to you. If both laptops are on the same network, then they should be able to ping one another. If so then creating shares and connecting from one to the other is a breeze.

Checklist:

1) Can both ping one another? If yes, continue (if no, get it rectified).
2) Create folders you want to share.
3) Map to the shares.

Hi, since this is my first time here I figure I may as well start out with a bang. In our IT department we are implementing a prepaid website for all of our sites to use. The site is hosted by verisign, but the connection is tunneled from the remote sites to our switch and then tunneled to the verisign SSL site. The problem is at all the remote sites the desktops wont connect to the site. The odd thing is that if i take my laptop here and plug in on the exact same cable that the desktop had, the laptop will connect. Then, if i take that same cable and plug it back into the desktop PC, it won't connect. I've verified this problem on all of our remote sites, and all the laptops work and desktops do not. All of the desktops here at our main office can connect fine? Any ideas??? I was thinking maybe a problem with SSL or a small reg fix. Also, I have listed the site under trusted sites and we have issued certificates to verify the authenticity. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks....

Hello,
I am trying to help out my family with this question: I was trying to connect a Dell Studio 1458 laptop to the internet that we have. There is NO router, only a modem so the ethernet cord hooks directly from the cable modem to the computer. The laptop has wireless and wired internet capabilities (supposedly). It couldn't connect to a wireless internet and it wouldn't connect to the wired connection either. I got the same thing every time "Unidentified network: no internet access" Upon troubleshooting I get this error: "internet IP address cannot be configured." It is almost like the computer is not allowing internet accessing.

The internet works fine because when tried on 2 other computers and everything worked fine. Ironically, this is also happening with my sister's Dell Inspiron laptop. Both computers have Windows 7 64x with Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet network cards. The driver for the network card was updated: no change. The device was disabled / enabled, no change. All firewalls and virus software disabled, no change. There are no detectable errors in the device manager.

I am running out of ideas on what could be causing the problem and how to fix it. I am thinking it has something to do with how dell has the computers set-up, because two new dell computers are having the problem; but I have no idea how to approach it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hey everyone, I?ve been having constant issues with my desktop staying connected to internet. Sometimes it?ll lose connection for a minute, an hour, or multiple days. The past few days I haven?t been able to access internet on my desktop - however, my dad?s laptop connects just fine. I included a picture of IPCONFIG /ALL if that helps, however DHCP has been enabled.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you

A:how do i connect a bluetooth cell phone to laptops?

What OS? In windows you simply set your cell phone to discoverable in the bluetooth settings and then in your bluetooth places you discover devices. It should walk you through the pairing process from there.

I have searched the internet for answers but it seems to me that i haven't gotten any clue how to solve my problems..

here we go..

i have set-up a network between mine's and my brother's laptop and eventually we can share folders.. one time, something went wrong and i can only see my terminal in the network i have made.. i looked for some answers over the net and found out that one of my brother's program was blocking his network capabilities (if that is the right term, excuse me for my lame English. XD) anyhow, i have managed to fix that and my only concern now is to connect our laptops to play LAN games... i don't know what is the problem.. i also tried using a cross-over cable but it only yielded the same result... i try to create a game and tries to get it but he doesn't see the game i created... same goes for me... he makes a game but when i try to enter it's as if there's no created game... Warcraft is the game to be exact... i'm not a computer geek or what.. i just read forum threads to solve my pc related problems.. and since i can't find any answers, i tried to making my question to fully help me..

oh, btw before something happened to my brother's connection we haven't played together any LAN games..
Thank you in advance.!

A:how to connect two laptops using a router to play LAN GAMES?

ok, just to start this off the right way, i do know some networking and have connected many games for LAN and WAN play.

first off, unless you networks are set up different wherever you are, (i'm in the US) dont use a crossover. also i am assuming that you are both on the same side of the same router.

go to start/ run and then type in cmd. this should bring up the command prompt. type in ipconfig. on both computers. write down the IPs and then type ping (ip) -ok, its hard to write commands properly this way but its "ping" then one "space" and then the "IP" of the computer that you are not on.

hopefully it doesnt time out. since you did SOME file sharing im sure this works.

when you start the game in warcraft, you should be able to host your own offline game. when you do this, watch for anything that has your ip or anything that says "port".

now that the game is started (there should be a lobby of some sort where you wait for other players), the other computer can connect. (join LAN, direct join, etc...) the important thing to look for on this computer is a place to enter an ip or port number. when you enter these numbers on the joining computer (not the hosting one) make sure you enter the same ip and port number the HOST computer is using.
with some games you need to shut off firewalls, antivirus etc... with other you have to do port forwarding. think twice about doing any of these. for obvious reasons.

i hope this he... Read more

I have two laptops - Dell 1545 and an Acer5633. Both use Vista. I have been connecting via an ad hoc network and through the Acer to the Internet. Suddenly they could no longer connect to each other after three days with no problem. Each computer can individually connect to the Internet, but not via the other. I have tried turning off the broadband modem. Tried creating a new network. Checked that internet sharing is allowed. Any help?

I have a Netgear router (WNDR3400)

I have 1 desktop pc (netgear software installed on this)

I have 2 laptops

All 3 pc's are running Windows 7 pro

I need to change the Network Key (password) on the desktop.

Then I need to know what has to be done so both laptop pc's will connect without an ethernet cable.

A:Need help to connect laptops to router without ethernet cable

The manual that came with the Wireless Router has all that information. Basically you put the Router's IP address in your browser's Address bar, looks similar to 192.168.1.1 but last two numbers may be different, hit Enter and should open the page to your Router's Setup. You may need the user name and password, also provided in the manual. Once in you can go to the Wireless section to set up a password or change it if already there. You can also change the Network name but remember it.
The manual:
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WN..._23MAR2010.pdf

Then when that is done you fire up the Notebooks and click the Wireless icon in the Notification Area, should show your Router and click to log in with the password you set.

I am a new member and have never, ever posted before on any forum but am totally confused and lost here..I know some about computers and had both my laptops connected for 1 whole day before I made the mistake and turned them off at the end of the day...now can't remember how to get it to work again...please...how do I connect them directly together with a ethernet cable so that I am able to connect to the internet from both?? One is Windows Media xp and is built in wireless..my other one is also xp but doesn't have built in wifi and I broke my netgear adapter so unable to connect. We run off the internet wifi offered free from where we live so how do I solve this issue??? p.s. no modem or router available to use and I am homebound/disabled....can someone walk me through the steps of creating a network for home and whatever else I need to do to fix this ?????? Thanks!!!

A:Help!! Connect 2 laptops directly w/ethernet w/1 laptop wifi

After connecting them together by ethernet enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the wireless connection that has internet access. You can probably also bridge the wireless and ethernet connections, but to say that I'm making the assumption that you are not restricted to only one IP address on your free Wi-Fi. I haven't given any more details, since I assume this will jog your memory of which you did yesterday.

Hi I am tech savvy and I am stumped please help

I set up my Netgear AC 1450, upgraded the bad firmware, works ok, but my laptops that run 8.1 Windows, may not be related, won't connect. I get my IP phone and my smartphone buy neither laptop. I click and it can't connect. Now I am reading a bit on netgear's site that they may not be compatible with 8.1? I can't even find AC 1450 in the list to cross reference Is there another name for this router than AC 1450, is that Costco's branding?

TIA

I had been using a Belkin Wireless G router successfully until a couple of weeks ago when it died. I recently purchased a new Belkin Wirelell G + MIMO router and my troubles have begun.

I have a desktop running Vista wired into the router and it's working fine. When I initially set up the router, my Compaq Evo N600c laptop, XP, with a linksys wireless card worked fine. I was able to connect to the network, add the network printer and access the internet. My problems began when I turned on the security on the router.

My desktop still works fine and if I direct connect the laptop to the router I'm fine, but with security set, I cannot connect wireless. I've tried WEP64 and WEP128, neither is working for me. The prior router was set up with WEP128 encryption with no problems. I've tried everything that I know how to do, plus a lot of the advice and hints I've seen on line.

I'd really appreciate some help on this one. I'm not willing to run the network without security.

Thanks!

A:Solved: Cannot get laptops to connect Belkin Wireless with security

I suggest trying WPA, WEP is not a very good option in any case.
