Preferred Solution: "Eject Media" icon appears with no devices plugged in

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just purchased a Seagate external drive as a backup for my computer.

Without me doing anything the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the lower part of my computer screen now says "Open Devices and Printers" which is where it takes you when you click on it.

I hesitate to plug my external drive in if I can't safely remove it.

Does anyone know how to get the "Safely Remove Hardware" option back?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Matters not, download, install tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One). Best to run it in Safe Mode with Networking. Accept defaults and check items #26 & 27. Restart maybe twice, to smooth out Windows 10 OPs. Also ensure icon rebuilding and/or system files association is checkmarked.

In my Systray there is an icon "Safely remove hardware and eject media"
which did not exist in WinXP.

I guest this is for possible removing USB sticks from USB slots.

However I should be able to remove USB sticks by just plugging them out.
Per definition WinOS and hardware should be able to handle this automatically.

So I do not need this icon in Systray.

How can I hide this icon permanently from Systray?

Peter

A:How to disable Systray icon "Safely remove hardware and eject media"?

If you right click on the arrow thing in your notification tray, you will see "customize notification icons."

From there, you should be able to set it to "hide icon and notifications"

I have noticed this on several systems - one in particular is a Toshiba Sattelite A505-S6980 - where I "Customize" the icons that appear in the system tray.

One icon that I like to appear is the little "USB" icon for the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" function.

What happens is this:
I "customize" the icons, and select "Windows Explorer (Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media)" and set it to "Show Icon and Notifications"
It appears (if I have something plugged in) and I can click on it to un-mount and remove media.
It might even appear later on too.
However, at some time in the future after setting that icon, it disappears from the system tray and returns to the "hidden icon" list with it's attribute reset to "Only Show Notifications". Once it disappears, it's gone and will not return until manually set to "Show Icon and Notifications" again.

I can re-customize the icons and restore it, but it never stays there permanently as it should. Other icons, such as my Anti-Virus's icon, the network icon, the battery icon, the speaker icon, etc., remain and I have no trouble with them vanishing. It appears that this one icon, and this one icon only, does not want to persist in the system tray, and nothing I can do - short of a big hammer! - will convince it otherwise.

What do I have to do to get this icon to stay where I put it?

Thanks!

Jim (JR)

A:"Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" keeps vanishing from systray

Normally the "Safely Remove Hardware & Eject Media" only shows when you Left Click on the little ^ on the Task Bar when you actually have some removable hardware attached.
On my computer when I have say a USB connected hard drive & I wish to see if I can safely remove it I click on the ^ on the task bar & it shows a list of items & one of them is the attached USB hard drive. If I left click on that item it gives a description of it & when I then right click on the description is gives me the safe to remove message if it is safe to do so.

When you have media hardware connected through USB there should be an icon showing down on the right side. Sometimes it doesn't show but you can then click the arrow which will make hidden icons show.

I deleted it from the Play Devices area when it appears (not easy to do) and then added it back but that didn't help.

At the TV end, the device (Blu Ray player) appears and disappears the same way. My TV has wi-fi and DLNA and works just fine but I want the Blu Ray players DLNA function to work also.

Any ideas???

Have you gone into the Network settings for the Blu-Ray player to make sure your computer shows up in there? Also the Blu-Ray players are very limited in what they play back. Most times just pictures. If you are wanting to stream movies, you will need a Plex server, and something like a Roku or Amazon Fire.

Good morning. I've read an older thread that a particular installed printer does not appear in Devices & Printers. And I tried all the recommendations there. However, as the thread title states. we suddenly lost the ability to have Devices & Printers run to completion. In our case, the green line crawls across the dialogue box, but never completes and the box remains empty.

I've attempted the suggestions in Services to set Bluetooth to Start and Automatic. I also made sure the same was true for the Print Spooler. I then attempted to uninstall the printer drivers, but there's a problem with that, too. Though the system acts as though it's trying to remove the driver, it never does and I'm unable to uninstall any of the other HP printer drivers.

On top of that, I'm unable to print to the XMS printer. I've tried, but it hangs the page and I'm forced to end the process. In Device Driver, the printer which is an HP Officejet 6500 E709, does appear when I select, "View - Hidden Items."

On Thursday 7/23/15, I allowed the latest "critical" Windows update to install with the hope that it might correct the error. Nada! So I've basically run out of ideas as what else I can do, short of resetting Windows. I'd truly appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks & Enjoy your weekend.

Windows seems to believe any audio device I plug in isn't actually plugged in. No matter which jack I plug anything into, it doesn't detect either my mic, my monitor speakers, or my headphones. I updated to the Vista version of the realtek drivers, and it doesn't detect anything either. I don't think all of the jacks would have broken at once, so I'm very hopeful that's not the problem.

Edit: After I rebooted, my monitor speakers were detected. I was also able to plug in my headphones and mic as normal. The problem is gone, but I figure the next time I move my computer the same thing will happen again.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening.

A:Audio devices "not plugged in" when they are

Same happens to me. Windows 7 doesn't recognise if device is plugged in or not.
I have ALC880 on Foxconn 6100M2MA mobo. It's strange. If I check 'Disable front panel jack detection' front panel mic appears. Both mic and headphones are plugged in at rear panel. It works like a charm in Linux, but not in here. Maybe not completely like a charm, because only headphones and mic works.
Everything was fine until it failed to work in Windows XP. Only headphones was working. So I decided to install Windows 7. I have R2.22 Vista drivers.
So ? What is that ? Card is broken ?

Alex, I'm unfamiliar w/ these created drives but a possible solution that occurred to me is using a Restore Point. Any new files won't be lost. There must be some admin tools that would excise those. Regedit would be a last resort.

I click on "check for solutions" it doesn't do anything, and I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer, and also the "update driver" option but it says windows has determined it is up to date.

Does anyone have any solutions for this? I have been googling for a solution for hours and haven't came across any solutions, apart from that it could potentially be to do with video card/drivers or RAM.

Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Hello,
First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron

It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.

Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in

Should I "Eject" a USB device, or should I "Safely Remove" it? What's the difference? From experimentation, "Safely Remove" makes it disappear from the list of drives in the Computer folder, but all the lights on the physical thumbdrive stay lit (which worries me, because on XP they went out completely). Also from experimentation, "Eject" makes all the lights go out on the device, but the drive letter continues to exist in the list of drives in the Computer folder (though it has forgotten the volume name). There are 2 devices in the "Device Manager" that do not have drivers installed.

I just did a clean install of Window 7 SP1 32-bit to a Dell Latitude E6500. I have uploaded all the Windows updates and all seems to be performing well. However, there are two devices in the "device manager" that do not have drivers installed, and I can't determine what the devices are nor how/where to find the drivers for them online or elsewhere. The driverless devices are "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH". When I look at the properties page of both devices, it says that the Base System Devices location is "PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3", and the Boradcom USH's location as "0000.001a.0002.001.000.000.000.000.000".

The laptop did NOT come with a drivers installation disk.

If I run WinTV from Hauppauge I can view TV just fine.MCE ran fine this morning on Vista SP1 before the install. For the tuner issue I have done the following:-Reseated the card-Updated the drivers-Uninstalled the hardware and rescanned/installed the hardware and drivers-All Windows Updates-Uninstalled all references to Hauppauge on the machine and installed JUST the drivers, no Hauppauge software-Adjusted Log On preferences for Windows Media Center services to Local and manually started ehrecvr and ehsched along with cmd line manual starts-Downloaded new codecs from WinDVD and MSFT-Run the WMC Decoder Checkup Utility from MSFT and changed to Miscrosoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder (the utility recommended I change to this -- only one that is MCE compatible -- but once I did it told me that it is incompatible with sync on WMP10 and that... A:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error. It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.  First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority    Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

Hi
I'm currently trying to finalise group policy settings for my Windows 8 students. All seems to be going well except, I cant for the life of me find out hide to hide 2 remaining items under "This PC", these being the "Access
Media" & "Add a Network Location" icons on the File ribbon (image below), can anyone help please.

A:Hide "Access Media" & "Add a Network Location" icons using Group Policy

Hi,
I think we can deploy script with set-acl powershell command to take ownership with Administrator of following keys, and set Deny permission on Users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell\Windows.AddMediaServer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell\Windows.AddNetworkLocation
SET-ACL on registry key

Hello,
I got this problem today. Normally when right clicking on the "explorer" icon it shows shortcuts of folders that I added as well as frequently visited folders.
But now it shows nothing but two options: "Windows explorer" and "detach the program".
I tried to move new folders in but nothing was changed.
Please, what is my problem? How could I solve it?
Thank you!

A:"Frequent" and "attached" disappear from Explorer Icon

Problem solved!

Jump Lists - Reset and Clear All Items

Delete everything in these two folders:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

And then you can make new shortcuts as you want!

I reformatted my computer recently, with all the same hardware and software I usually do, but this time I noticed something different.

On my E: partition (non-system), there is a folder called "9ca233a934811ecf86022b48e5" which contains two folders: "AMD64" and "i386".

I researched a little bit, and found out those folders pertain to a windows 64-bit edition, but I don't have anything to do with a 64-bit edition, mine's a 32-bit.

Here's my system specs:WinXP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300
3GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 7600 GS 512MB
ST3300831AS 300GB HD
I have my HD partitioned to 3 drives:14GB System Drive (C:)
40GB Document Drive (D:)
190GB Storage Drive (E:)
I also have 40GB partitioned as an Acronis True Image Home Secure Zone, for storing Disk Images.

I was wondering why those two folders are on my E: drive, when I'm running a 32-bit version of Windows. Also, (sorry if this should be in another thread) my computer has been restarting unexpectedly while I've just been doing random things on it. Nothing graphics-intensive, or anything like that, so I don't know why it's doing that either.

Thanks for your help and time,
Nic

A:"AMD64" and "i386" folders on WinXP Media Center 32-bit edition

It sounds like those are temporary files from a driver installation. A lot of companies seem to package every possible driver in the zip or executable, extract them all to the hard drive, find the one the system needs and copy it to the system32 directory, then leave the rest behind.

In that case they should be safe to delete. It would take a bit more research on your part to make sure. Maybe a readme or help file somewhere in the directory?

My external HD will not eject. In Vista it ejects fine. I west to customize the tray icons and saw this. The eject button listed as "Windows Host Process" What is up with this and is this why it will not eject? I have never seen this before and wonder if it's correct or a bug. I went back a few minutes later and it was showing the icon as normal but still will not eject properly.

Hello all, am running Win 8.1 Pro x64. Today I noticed that the "Eject" option from the right-click menu doesn't work for either of my 2 CD-Rom drives, nor for a "virtual" drive - I get the same error message on all 3: "An error occured while ejecting [drive]".

Device Manager shows no errors, and I've tried uninstalling the drives and rebooting, but error persists. Can anyone help?

Also, to be clear, it is NOT a physical problem with the drives, as I can open them without a problem through the buttons on the front.

Finally, if for some reason I can't fix this issue, does anyone know of a way to at least just DELETE the "Eject" from the context menu?

A:"Eject" Option Doesn't Work for ANY of My CD-ROM Drives??

Just to try and determine if your context menu is corrupted, you could try and create a shotcut to open/close your CD tray. With that said, there are several freeware programs available to create these shortcuts so I would just google for:

how to create a shortcut to eject cd

Then pick one and try it out. I hve done this before; however, I can't remember which one I used but I think it was NirSoft.

Good luck.

Booted Bios up and checked that everything was set to AHCI for the ssd and hot-swapping storage drives. Board REV: 1.0 and Bios F11

Board was set to AHCI by default so didn't have to change anything for AHCI. My understanding was that Windows 8 had AHCI south bridge drivers like Windows 7 did so no need to add drivers before loading Windows 8. Install went fine......Gigabyte driver disk would not run on Widows 8 even though the box said Windows 8 ready. No problem got drivers from Gigabyte web site (probably newer drivers anyway...so better)....all seemed to go well. Problem !!!! drives do not show up on tray to eject or hot-swap if you will. Also can not right click to eject in "My computer". They show up in "My computer" and function fine just can not eject or hot-swap. In "Device Manager" under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers only "Intel (R) 7 series/C216 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller" is showing.... not all the separate channels like in my Windows 7 build.....which hot-swapping is working fine.

What went wrong ? Seems very odd....everything works fine but can not eject drives. I have know problem starting over and reloading Windows 8 ...but wan... Read more

Hello, I am using Windows XP that has been completely updated. I recently installed McAfee AntiVirus Plus 2010. All other functions seem fine; however, when I connect my iPod, sync works fine until iTunes attempts to eject, then I see 4-6 "Windows No Disk" error pop-ups with the message: "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk in drive: ". I am able to cancel the error pop-ups then manually eject and the sync is working fine.

I have manually changed the drive name to various other letters, reset and restored my iPod, uninstalled then reinstalled iTunes (in order per Apple's instructions), all with no change to the error message. Any help you can provide would be outrageously cool!

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

So I keep getting this pop-up (Att 1), saying that I can't eject my HD b/c it's in use by other programs, close any applications, etc, etc. This is occurring frequently often but not in a consistent pattern.

[Edit: I'm not trying to eject the drive, and don't want to - it's my full-time data drive.]

I found the associated entries in Event Viewer (pasted below). Anyone got pointers on how to determine what is kicking this off?

There must be an error with one of the startup settings.
Please use Autoruns by Sysinternals/Microsoft to see more info about Programs loading with your system.
Pay attention to Logon tab.

Looks like for some reason it is trying to load a folder as a file. "Media" is a part of a folder path.
Try to uncheck all values, where Media is a part of the path.

Hello,

I just upgraded from win98 to winXP today and I installed win media player 9 also. My mp3's and wma's play great...its just that my files with a .mpg extension play the sound only...and will not show the video. Also some of my mpg files get an error message saying "the file extension does not match the file format" , but this is strange because these files worked fine while i was using win media player 7.1 yesterday before the upgrade today.

This has never happened before.

Any advice?

thanks, tate

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?
