Web Server Firewall Issue

Q: Web Server Firewall Issue

I have a website on a server with Windows Server 2008 and been having firewall issues. On the client and server computers Privatefirewall v7 is installed. When the firewall is enabled on the server the website and VPN stops working although FTP, POP3 and SMTP servers work.

On the server the IP 192.168.0.2 has been added to the trusted sites and the 192.168.0.0 has been added to the trusted network. Windows firewall has been disabled on both computers.

Server
------
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

Client
-----
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi I'm working on a client/server with the Java programming language and trying to figure out how to protect my server. With my current Virus/Firewall protection suite theres nothing I can do to keep out unwanted Java applications on the port I choose to allow the Java SE Binary through for clients accessing the server application. ESET Smart Security 4 is what I am using. Does anybody know of a security suite that would allow only a specific Java application to get through the firewall? I'm not to sure on this subject because my firewall is identifying any Java application as only the "Java SE Binary" and not I'm sure if you can even really name your Java application like you would something you would write in C++. Any information would be appreciated, thank you.

Firewall Issue(s) - Windows XP Professional & Comodo Firewall Pro

Friday/December 3rd 2007: This morning I was looking at the features and settings of Comodo Firewall Pro Version 2.4.19.185. Accidentally I clicked ‘no’ when a learned prompt came up asking if I wanted to allow Avast Free Edition to connect to the net. I believe it was Avast. Anyway I figured I would uninstall and reinstall to correct the settings, no big deal, or so I thought.

When windows started back up and gave me the security alert prompt (Control Panel > Windows Security Center) and I figured no big deal. However it was saying “Comodo is not installed bla bla bla.” When I enabled XP Professional’s firewall, window’s message said, “Comodo was working, etc.”

Windows Firewall worked within normal parameters as far as I could tell otherwise. I will try to recreate issue buy uninstalling and will post detailed results later with screen shots.

Sunday/December 9th 2007: I tried recreating the incident and my results confuse me. Windows XP Professional Security Center Says “Comodo Firewall not on bla, bla, bla.” However, when I turn on XP’s firewall it says “Windows Firewall is on bla, bla, bla. So why when I turn off windows firewall does it say that “Comodo” not windows firewall is disabled?

How would I correct this?

Thank you.

IIS is not for security. IIS is Internet Info Server. This is used as a web\ftp server. Proxy and a firewall would be good for security.

Hi,

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.

Hi,

I'm trying to build a ftp-server which delivers tv-programs from my computer in Finland to the computer I have in Spain. My purpose is to use remote connection to Finland to record programs, and then download them by using ftp-client program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but computer in Finland needs:

tv-card
Ftp-server
static ip

Computer in Spain needs:
ftp-client

I think the question is, how do I configure my zyxell adsl modem (with NAT and Firewall based on port checking) in ftp-server and my the clients zone-alarm so that not every hacker can get to the ftp-server? Clients modem is bridged.

I obviously can't configure my Spain ip-number to the modem, because it's not static. Can I some other way identify to the modem "who is calling". Modem must also let windows remote control through? I need to also open some port-numbers for ftp-connection...

I think what I need to do is to open port 21(for command) and 20(for data) connection to the modem in Finland? To the clients zone-alarm firewall I need to open port > 1024 from Finlands ip-address? And then I put some password for the ftp-server? right?

If somebody would have some information concerning about this, I would appreciate it

Thanks for advance

Juha

I've set up an FTP server on a computer that has a static IP. We have a hardware firewall that uses a script to allow access through it. I'm kind of stumped on this one though. I cannot seem to access the FTP server from the WAN side EXCEPT when I drop the firewall. Access from the LAN side isn't a problem. These are the FTP scripts that I have tried. I'm a little fuzzy on the "active" and "passive" FTP concept and that's probably my problem. Can anyone show me the error of my ways?

Hi all!

I apologize if I post this to the wrong forum. I'm new here.

I have tried to illustrate my WLAN/LAN/Internet situation:

I am looking for ways to access
(1) my (own) web server (with IIS 6/Apache) (HTTP)
(2) my IP/Network cam (RTSP)

from my smartphone (3) from "Internet". I am a .NET-system developer but my networking skills are very poor.
My problem is that there are obstacles, i e an evil firewall (4). Since my web server (1) and IP/Network (2) cam are behind it (4), I have absolutely no idea how to access them from my smart phone (3) from Internet.
My ISP doesn't allow port forwarding, but I know that there is a Socks5 server which I can reach @port 1080. I believe that I can use it somehow?

My question:
Is it possible to reach my web server at all from outside the firewall? How? Are there any other solutions for me except for changing my ISP?

With best regards,
Hans

Ok forgive if an easy question and perhaps I am thinking of this at a different angle at the moment but if you connected to the internet through a high anonymity proxy server wouldn't that elminate hackers. NOW let me qualify that eliminate hackers provided you didn't activate a backdoor virus on your machine. (Actually please post this as well What if you did activate a backdoor, how could the hacker even find you then if you are going through a proxy, they would once again only see the proxy address and have to get through this and then find you first NO?)So really wouldn't the only thing necessary be updated antivirus and spyware detector if you were connecting through an anonymous proxy server.

My reasoning would be the sites and a hacker or spyware would only see the proxy's ip address so in order to get to you they would have to get through the proxy server first and then find your ip on that network. I guess the main concern would be you might not know the proxy's policy but that could be tested at many websites correct?

Also how could spyware see you if you are hiding behind a proxy? I would think they couldn't if the proxy had good security.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

No point in adding another dedicated firewall. Replacing Windows with Linux or BSD will give you a nice webserver that can take on moderate amounts of traffic provided you don't do much active content.

I am using a HP6620 pc with Win7 SP1. I am running a video streaming program called PS3 Media Server streaming video from my pc to a Samsung Smart tv on a home wireless network using a Actiontec Model GT784WN modem/router.

This combination has worked good for several months. I recently started having some minor problems with the pc not shutting down correctly. I ran the internal check disk. It ran all five checks ok and did not indicate it found anything wrong but since then the shut down is ok. The first time I tried to run the streaming video after the disk check it failed to make a connection with my tv. After messing with it for a couple of days I shut the Windows firewall off. The streaming began to work immediately. I checked the firewall and the PS3 Media Server was listed as a program that was allowed. I turned the firewall on and off several times and listed and delisted the software but it still does the same thing. I'm thinking my running the disk check must have done something but I don't know enough to check what. Help will be appreciated. I am not super efficient at pc's so be kind. Thanks

Hi Guys, we're moving into our new office this week (formally a bedroom buisness. It's time to expand and take on some people) I want to nework all the computers, and have a firewall on the cable broadband to protect all the computers from attack.

Can anyone help by telling me what I need.

I was planning to use a 500mhz machine as the firewall with antivirus software installed as well. All the guides I've found on google suggest using Linux. Do I have to use linux for a firewall ? I was hoping to use windows 2000 lite on all of the network - I've never used Linux ! ( also I've only got 5 low spec machines so I need to downgrade the OS. All the computers on the nework only need to access the internet to do the work.

Also I'd like to connect a printer on the 500mhz machines ( the one thatI use for the firewall) so that anyone on the internal network can print a document. It would just make things easy to have the printer connected to that particular computer.

Can someone answer a few questions please as I'll be intalling and configuring all this tomorrow.

Q. any recomendations as to what firewall software I should use.
Q. what antivirus software should I use.
Q. Would you use win 2000 lite as the OS for the firewall
Q. Can I have my printer connected to the Firewall computer which would then be on the network.

Thanks for any advice.

Anyone have a clue about setting up an FTP server inside a firewall? I have a cable modem (RCA), then a broadband wireless router (linksys), then three PC?s with WinXP branching from there, one cabled two wireless.

Now if I understand the process correctly, the outside world can see only the IP address of the linksys router. The PC?s get an ever changing address each time they are booted. Is that right?

How do I go about making a single directory on one of the wireless PC?s viewable to anyone? I don?t really care about security on this machine cause it?s only purpose in life is to record TV programs with an NVIDIA Personal Cinema. There is nothing interesting on the hard drive beyond my husbands StarTrek and Battlestar Galactica reruns??

I?ll do a ghost image of the drive before I open it to the world in case of malicious damage from the outside.

Any advice on how to go about this? I just need a location to upload HUGE digital home videos for family access and I?m not about to pay an ISP for FTP space when I have plenty of hard drive space at home.

Thanks!

Amanda

A:Home FTP server set-up inside firewall

Actually, the only thing the outside world sees is your modem. Your router is ly available to your LAN unless you're running VPN.
Most of the time, the IP your individual computer has will not change from boot to boot, and will be something like 192.168.x.x

In order to accomplish what you want to do, you'll need to enable port forwarding on port 21 for your specific computer's IP address. Refer to the documentation of your router on how to do this, as it is different from router to router.

It's a simple configuration, but hard to find. We know because we looked! To enable the use PCAnyWhere with any server using the IIS firewall you need to drill down as follows:

Advanced Management
Computer Management
Services and Applications
Routing and Remote Access
IP Routing
NAT/Basic Firewall

After selecting NAT/Basic Firewall on the left you should see several items on the right including 'Network Internet Connection'. Click on it once and inspect its properties. On the window that displays select the
'Services and Ports' tab and then click on the [Add] button.

Continue to add each of the following items to create two (2) new entries on the list:
1. Description=PCAnyWhereTCP, select protocol =TCP, Incoming port=5631, Private address=(the external address for your server) and Outgoing port=5631. Then click [OK]

2. Description=PCAnyWhereUDP, select protocol =UDP, Incoming port=5632, Private address=(the external address for your server) and Outgoing port=5632. Then click [OK]

If you have PCAnyWhere properly installed and configured for external users you should be ready to go!

I have a home network and have recently upgraded it with a wired print server (PS). In order to get the PS to work I had to disable XP's built in firewall. I was wondering if there is a way to give permissions to the PS so that it can TX/RX through the XP firewall.

My router has a NAT firewall and I'm using Zone Alarm to stealth any open ports and block certain requestes, so I'm not sure that the XP firewall is needed, but it does give me piece of mind while it is running.

The PS has a static IP address (192.168.1.201) within the local network. I have also discovered that it uses port 34443. With this information can I set up an exception for the XP firewall to let the PS communicate?

OS: Windows XP Home
PS: Linksys PSUS4

Thanks,

Hi,
I have been asked by a small educational institution to implement web filtering for about 10 student computers. Their goal is for the students to have access to specific web sites that are on a school whitelist but not show any pics, videos, java content, etc. Basically just plain text. After googling around it seems that MS ISA server is an option (expensive but user friendly) or Squid (free but not so user friendly). I need it to have some basic features like a log of who accesses it and when, timed access, etc.
Any suggestions out there of what I can use to accomplish this? Are Squid and ISA the only choices? I also saw something called "Firestarter" http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/. Has anyone had experience with this?

Your help is appreciated.

I just checked my Firewall logs for my server and I'm surprised to see that people are accessing a open port on my server (it's passworded with a .htaccess file).

Here's the logs:

That's a bit of the log, almost every entry is attempting to access 45813, which is a port for uTorrent web, which I use for transfering files from my home to my school (they've denied email and everything so this is my last resort). These aren't my schools IP's, because the schools IP never changes.

I'm just wondering if I should be worried about these "attacks." They're happening very often, almost 1 kb every 10 seconds. While that's small, it's occurring pretty often.

Also, my router logs say that I have a "SYN Flood Attack Detect." I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your support.

Hi,

Can anyone please help with this issue?

I have server 2003 on which I'm running an FTP application (automatically scheduled to publish the output of a timetabling application to an external website).

Problem is, the FTP application will not work with the firewall turned on. I've done the following:
Enabled all the standard FTP ports in the firewall.
Tried both active and passive mode FTP.
Tried Windows command-line FTP, which works fine.
Tried installing and using WS_FTP, which works fine.
Tried the FTP application on 2 different Server 2003 boxes and several XP machines, and it performs without a problem even with the firewalls enabled.

With the firewall off on this box, it works like a charm. With it turned on, the application simply quits after a few seconds without doing any transfer of files. No error messages are produced.

However, in the event viewer, I get a ".NET Runtime 2.0 error" with the following output:
EventType clr20r3, P1 ftpupload.exe, P2 1.0.2805.21438, P3 46dfea7d, P4 ftpupload, P5 1.0.2805.21438, P6 46dfea7d, P7 9c, P8 4c, P9 ftpupload.ftpexception, P10 NIL.

I've been careful to ensure that the same .NET runtimes are running on all the machines that I've used for testing this application.

If anyone could shed any light on this, I'd be eternally grateful!

When the server's windows firewall is turned on, it does not let us open a program and access a file that is on the server. But, when the firewall is turned off - there are no issues. Is there a way around this without having to keep the firewall turned off?

It's an Windows SBS server

A:How do you stop a firewall from blocking your access to a server?

With a desktop Windows system you'd have to enable file sharing and specify what folders/files can be shared. There are also ways to configure the firewall (Control Panel - Windows Firewall) to open ports or allow specified programs access. I suspect Windows server is somewhat similar.

(Remember to reply with "bump" to your other thread to bring it back to the top when you get no action for about 24 hours.)

It may be the network firewall blocking it at the server. Many companies do not allow streaming media because it consumes all of the bandwidth.

Hey all,

This may be a VERY simple question but i can't seem to find out the cause of it. I have a laptop that needs to connect via VPN to a server running an application 'Filemaker Pro 8.5". I connected the VPN to the lan and everything worked fine i was able to access the IP 192.168.100.110 with no problems. Then windows firewall popped up and asked if it should block it. I told it to unblock.

At this point I closed the program thinking everything was gravy. Now when I go to reconnect to that program over VPN it hangs. And now I cannot ping the server 192.168.100.110.

I have tried a crapload of things to try and fix this, but no luck so far. I even did winsock reset.

Now I can connect to the other servers fine...I can even run Filemaker 5.5 on a different server. However this laptop is ONLY for Filemaker 8.5 so I have to be able to connect, that is all it will do.

What do you think the problem is? Why could I connect then now no longer?

PS. I have disabled all Firewalls on the pc and AV.

Hello!

I'm puzzled. If I turn off windows firewall I can hit the FTP server from the WAN fine and even from the LAN. Turn the firewall back on and that port is blocked! When I installed IIS for the FTP server I added (ticked the boxes) for FTP Server in the firewall.

The $64,000 question is this; why is the firewall being a pest?

Thanks!

I'm new to the forum but have a problem that I want make the right decision on. I play Aces High II which is a flight simulation game. It may not be as hard core as Battlefield 3 but they do keep upgrading to high res graphics. My computer is a prebuilt Dell Studio XPS 8000. Intel i7 core 860 processor @ 2.8GHz. Graphics card a Nvidia geforce GTS 240. 8 Mb memory, Windows 7 home premium os. Now that said I am experiencing stutter sometimes while i'm playing. My fps go from 60 which is where it should be to 10 or less. I,m not sure if this is the game card or a lousy connection to the game server as we do get discoed sometimes. The computer is a year and a half old and don't remember experiencing this before that much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm not against getting a new card and probably need new power supply.

I recently changed a company from a satellite to broadband connection

i got everything working before connecting the firewall
Everything was setup for the exchange server (sbs2003) to work away.

so:

mail (send and receive) and internet were working on the new connection
(without the winroute firewall in place)

and obviously mail and internet was working through the winroute firewall
when it was connected to the satellite connection.

i then added the firewall...

So i made the changes on the dsl router and on my ext address of my firewall
and internet is working on my network, but mail was not sending or receiving
from my exchange box.

I received a rule from kerio support...which is now closed...and it didnt work
i ran the wizard to set all firewall rules to allow all...

i am now able to send mail...still cant receive...

is there something that should be setup on port forwarding from my dsl modem to my firewall? i have ports 25...80...3389... setup, but this is for outlook web access...which is
working...

Any ideas anybody...been at this for 4 hours...running out of ideas...

thanks for reading all that...

Hi,
I have set up an ftp server behind 2 routers & a firewall (& it works).

However 2 external users (on different days) could not make thier initial logon (personal) to my ftp server with my firewall running. They could logon with my firewall disabled, & when I enabled it again they were disconnected. 1 day after they made their initial logon they can each logon to my ftp server with my firewall running, without me making any changes at all.
I do not understand this, if my firewall is blocking them, why should it let them in the next day. The server has full access & so I did not expect the firewall to block them in the first place. The routers are configured correctly as the server does work without any problems other than the intial logon that I have mentioned. Both of the users are with the same ISP, & a different 1 to me
My external IP address is static, the external users IP addresses change all the time.

Hello,

I've been using windows and I can't seem to get my server working, how would I set CenturyLink? Online Security Firewall to allow this software to use my computer?

:EDIT:

In CenturyLink? Online Security,in the Firewall settings there is Rules and Services I have the rules set but I'm not sure if adding a service is how you add things or not.

Because Ps3 Media Server is basically just PlayON but is free, this program is used to find video or Media files and download them, but for some reason CenturyLink? Online Security will not allow the ps3 to see the files because the firewall isn't allowing it.

Hello everyone,A friend asked me if I could restore it's performance of it's laptop and make it go 'faster' again. So I did the usual Disk Clean and Defragmentation also I noticed the AVG was acting weird.Every time I started AVG Free, I would get a 'Server is busy' dialog with 2 available options, Switch to or Retry, which basically do nothing. After reinstalling AVG few times, uninstall, avgremover, search and delete, ccleaner, install and still getting the error.I tried Housecall, but that couldn't find any threats, so used Spybot S&D, got a few tracing cookies and MalwareBytes with some stuff, can't remember what. Also i've updated my drivers with Driver Genius Pro.Anyway I found this site after a bit of Googling, and ran a DDS scan, which worked like a charm, but the first attempt of GMER gave a BSOD, second time it worked, however it was slow as hell and freezed from time to time, after 18 hours it stuck on a freeze that it couldn't get out from.I'm kinda curious what is eating this computer and promised my friend I would help 'fix' his computer, so please help, thank you.Greetings Rob//EDITAlso i'm unable to Enable the Windows Firewall for some reason and Windows XP language is Dutch------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by rob at 14:33:37,84 on vr 11-06-2010Internet Explor... I have encountered a problem with Windows Firewall and would like to report it to Microsoft. It requires some specific circumstances to trigger, but I actually ran into this several times. It forces me to use a less secure network configuration (because
windows tcp timestamps leak system uptime and allow an observer to distinguish individual hosts behind nat).

Client: Windows 7 with Windows Firewall enabled, rfc1323 timestamps enabled, ECN enabled
Router: FreeBSD with firewall that performs timestamp randomization ("modulation")
Server: Windows XP(?) running IIS6, rfc1323 timestamps enabled, ECN disabled(?)

In this scenario, there is a 50% chance that the tcp connection to the server will stall after the initial handshake. That's because Windows Firewall will drop all packets on any connection to the server where the timestamp is above 2^31 (INT_MAX).
The packet exchange itself, as recorded on the router, may look like this:
C -> S [SYN, ECN, CWR] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 TSval=743741 TSecr=0
S -> C [SYN, ACK] Seq=0 Ack=1 Win=64240 Len=0 TSval=0 TSecr=0
C -> S [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=66560 Len=0 TSval=743744 TSecr=0
C -> S GET / HTTP/1.0
S -> C ... answer which gets acked ...
Or it may turn out like this:
C -> S [SYN, ECN, CWR] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 TSval=2344120535 TSecr=0
S -> C [SYN, ACK] Seq=0 Ack=1 Win=64240 Len=0 TSval=0 TSecr=0

I have a couple Windows 2000 servers hosting some web services and mail list servers and email server software. They are directly connected to a Cisco 800 series router with simple NAT but I have had terrible luck keeping them really secure. I have used CA Antivirus for a couple years and Zone Alarm but now Zone Alarm has stopped working well with the 2000 server (it crashes all the time and the True Vector service will not run properly) and I am wondering what the best idea for a decent software firewall and antivirus might be to protect these servers. I dont have a ton of $ for these things either. The servers have seperate external IP addresses as well.
Thanks,
J5

I have the HP Pavilion 2615nr (with Windows Vista Home Premium), bought from best buy pre installed (back in early Oct). Everytime when I start my computer (not from hibernate or sleep), I get a system pop up in the lower right saying I need to update my protection. I currently have Trend MicroVirus installed (and it's up to date).
When I open Security Center and go to Firewall. It says two programs are installed: Norton Internet Security and Windows Firewall. I looked in the Programs and features, I don't see Norton or Symantec. How can I get rid of Norton firewall, since I don't use Norton? Thank you.
