Memory compability for Dell laptops

Q: Memory compability for Dell laptops

I just upgraded the memory for my Dell 600m laptop and now I have one spare memory card from my Dell 600m (256MB, DDR, 333, CL2.5) and I want to know if I could use it in my Dell 1200 laptop that only has 128MB of ram.....is the memory from my 600m compatible with my 1200?

Thanks for the support!

Preferred Solution: Memory compability for Dell laptops

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

The unit I'm looking at has 256mb standard and I don't think I really need 512, but might get it later depending on price. It is a $100 option now which seems steep.

currently it has 2 memory sticks...one is 2700 and one is 2100
it takes 2700 but supposedly its backward compatible.
both are 256..I wanted to upgrade so I purchased a 1 gb that is 2100...bu when I place one in with either one of the other memory sticks my computer does not turn on/??? the 2100 thats only 256 works with the other memory stick...should I use the one gb bu itself or is their another issue /?? so confused
sorry for the dumb question

A:Question on my laptops memory

I will asume your laptop is new enough to contain dual channel RAM, dual channel RAM should ONLY work with two or four (or more, but its not recommended and wont fit in a laptop) sticks of identical RAM.

Your laptop will probably work with the single 1gb stick, but will not function with 256mb sticks.

BTW what do you mean by 2700 and 2100? RAM speed??

Solid State Hard Drive for Laptops?

When I upgraded my current desktop computer, now some three years ago (due again , the one area I flagged as needing improvement over earlier computers was the hard disc drive speed.

Running a few experiments to try to determine where the bottle necks were for ordinary computing I kept finding that wait periods corresponded to HDD reads and writes, and bootup time was almost all down to the HDD speed, especially for the larger XP platform.

Thus I opted for a 15,000RPM SCSI boot drive, just 18 gig but all it does is boot and store system files and utilities. It is unlikely that we will ever see the heavy, power hungry and very hot running SCSI in a laptop anytime soon. But I have always thought that one day, in the not too distant future, we?ll be kissing the old technology goodbye in favour of solid state.

That day may have come, but I have not heard anything much about it thus far, though I am not continuously scanning the media for the latest thing. So I may already be out of date?

What I noticed recently is that there are very cheap 8 and 16 gig USB drives. The question is, could such a drive be used as a boot drive for a Laptop and would it be any quicker? Would it really be advantageous? One exciting thing that immediately springs to mind is that if it were possible, then Laptops could be retrofitted with solid state, perhaps cutting boot time by more than 90%.

The first parameter that can be checked is th... Read more

A:Solid State Memory fo Laptops?

You sound like you are trying to sell us something. I hope you are not.

The problem with running an OS off a flash drive is that there are a limited amount of writes off the memory (while reads are practically infinite), so the Swap file of an OS will chew through the drive shortly (seen 1 month cited a few places as a rough estimate). I imagine you could get Windows to minimize that with a large amount of real RAM and then also turning off the page file, but I believe there is still some paging going on.

Another problem is transfer speed. While Seek Speed is up a lot, Transfer Speed isn't. I can't quote you real numbers right now, but it is significantly slower than a 7200 rpm drive, although it may be close enough to 5400.

USB is also a fairly inelegant solution to replacing the hard drive since you've always got a stick comming out of the laptop/pc. If one were really serious about this, you should look into a CF to IDE interface, and remove the hard drive from the laptop, and run on a CompactFlash card. The adapters should be cheap, but the pin layout is the same as IDE so if you were crafty you could even make one yourself.

Insirion 8200

When turned on it says that the primary disc not found. Then it goes straight to a warning screen telling you to go to setup. Looking at bios set up, the HD and optical drives are "not installed". Through Dell's chat line they said that both the HD and cd unit were defective. I could see the HD , but the CD too? They said that a operating system has to be noticed in order for the computer to work. Without a HD wouldn't the machine go to a doss prompt anyway? I tried that by removing the HD

Dell wants $168 for a HD which is nuts because online I can get one much less. My question is about the CD unit. Has anyone ever seen those go too

thanks
Rich

A:who knows their Dell Laptops?

The laptop could never go to a "DOS prompt" without the HDD, as to do so would mean that it would have DOS (not the case with XP) and if it had DOS, it resides on the HDD anyway.

Optical drives are not always shown (detected) in BIOS, but the BIOS boot screen should indicate their detection at boot time.

A faulty HDD electronics would prevent it being seen, but a fault on the Dell motherboard IDE would prevent both from being seen.

If they all had the same Windows version pre-installed and you can still read all the COA Windows Product Keys then all you need is a legitimate copy of that version of XP installation CD. Good luck finding one.

If they are all the exact same model then a set of Recovery CDs should work (if such was even provided and still available from Dell or somewhere).

Hi! I would like to know whether it is possible to put 32GB of memory (as 2 x 16GB DDR4 SODIMMs) into the Kaby Lake version of the ENVY 15 (specifically, the as104na: http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=ECC_BUNDLE_6156376 ). The documentation suggests that 16GB (as 2 x 8GB SODIMMs) is the maximum, but it's unclear whether this is actually accurate or has just been copied from previous-generation documentation - otherwise-inferior competing products using the same processor and chipset such as http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-15-7560-laptop/pd?oc=cn75602&model_id=inspiron-15-7560-laptop clearly advertise support for 32GB of memory as 2 x 16GB SODIMMs. I can see that there are similar answers around for previous generations of the product, such as http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Is-32GB-RAM-possible-in-an-HP-E... , but does this answer continue to be true on the new versions? If so, can you offer some explanation as to where this restriction comes from? (For example, if it is really a testing/certification issue rather than some sort of hardware deficiency and therefore actually will likely work (without being explicitly supported) then I would be happy to take my chances with that setup.)

Hi, i asked what i need to ask for at the Title
here it again "Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs"

A:Is there a Win7 VER. especially for Dell Laptops or PCs

There is, but you need to buy it from Dell.

When Dell manufacture a new computer they ship it with Dell Datasafe Backup software and as with most manufacturer's expect you to burn a set of recovery discs.

However, if you pay extra they will ship a windows DVD and driver DVD with a new computer.

My advice would be to contact Dell to see if they will sell you what you're after.

Anyone have experience with "refurbished" products from Dell? Particularly laptops? I have a friend that would like to get a laptop but has a pretty limited budget.

It seems like they have some good deals but I wonder about reliability.

A:Dell Refurbished Laptops

I find the refurb Dell to be a far superior buy than new. When you buy new you are often the first person to ever turn on the system, a refurb has been turned on and failed so it is sent back for extensive testing not done to a new system, after testing to make sure it works properly it is now sold at a good discount.

The refurb looks like new and has exactly the same warranty it just cost less. The only area where it is not a better deal is if you need some specific feature, you cannot order them built with extra parts beyond a few.

Dell gets so many refurbs that the best method for buying one is to know what you want ahead of time and what you are willing to pay for it, they have new systems come up for sale several times a day so if you have the time and know what you need it can be a very satisfactory system purchase.

In the last 2 weeks I have installed over 10 Dell laptops with Vista Home basic/Home premium. I have encountered these 2 specific problems on most of them!.

1 - They all had a 60 day trial of Office 2007. Having entered the License Key and registered the product everytime I open an Office application from the Start Menu it trys to reinstall again. If I use the Dell Dock it does not happen.

2 - On most occasions when trying to open the control panel it does not respond forcing Windows Explorer to restart.

I have not had these problems on other makes.

Has anybody else come accross these problems?

Does registering the product = Office validation with Microsoft Genuine Advantage?

Do the events preceding the Windows Explorer restart process include the fading white background, small blue circle spinning and "Not Responding..."? If so look at 3rd party firewall/ a-v products. Usually the firewall is the cause.

All these symptoms - but only on Dell products?

I couldn't buy a laptop for a while now since all manufacturer seem to force Vista, and don't offer any XP drivers on their website for their new models.

However, the new Dell inspiron models seem to fully support XP, as they're offering all XP drivers on their site. But I'm still skeptical about it as a few salespeople from Dell told me that XP, if installed, won't perform as good as it's supposed to, because the hardware was designed with Vista in mind.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I believe the HD has went bad....or at least I think it has. I totally washed the HD clean with a program call Boot and Nuke. The reason for doing so was that the computer was having problem in all sorts of areas. Me being a worry wart, thought it was infected with a virus.

So anyway after wiping it clean I tried to install Vista. Before it will install it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?", and it gave me two options...Disk 0 Partition 2 or Disk or Partition 3 MediaDirect. When I highlight Disk 0 Partition 2 for the install location a message appears at the bottom of the screen saying..."The disk may fail soon. If other hard disks are available, install Windows to another location". Well I have no other locations so I tried it on this disk and it would only get to 2% on the Expanding files step. But instead of getting HD error message I get the following message...."Windows cannot install required files. The files does not exist. Make sure all files required for installtion are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x80070003". I tried this 4 times, all with the same result.

So now I'm really confused as to what the problem is. Is the HD bad? Is the the Vista disk missing files? or is it both. If it is the HD, do I have to use a Dell HD or can I just go to Best Buy and purchase one there?

Any/all help would be greatly apperciated.

First off, not sure if this is the right forum, but I guess this falls under "hardware" so..

So here's my question..I love Dell computers. I've had a Dell Inspiron laptop for 4 years now and it works great. But it's only 1.1GHz so of course it's showing it's age so I'd like to get a new one. But here's the problem...Dell laptops only seem to go up to 2.3-2.5 GHz while brands like HP have laptops well over 3 GHz. What gives? Why are Dell's not up to speed with other brands yet, don't they want to compete with the market better? Cuz this is seriously holding me back from wanting to buy a Dell, or at least wait until they're as fast as HP etc.

So before I go out and buy another mother board W/O CPU and RAM, i want to make sure of a couple things....Is this a common problem with maybe power jack needs to be resoldered or some other easy fix, and if I do buy a motherboard will my CPU work in the same D600 motherboard. What I'm getting at is swapping CPU a routine type thing? Also should I move this post to a heading that has more traffic?

I need a lightweight (under 2kg) laptop for work, just MS Office applications and internet. I'm looking at used Dells on eBay, but am stuck at the point of whether to go with the D400, D410, D420 or D430. Am I getting anything extra worthwhile as I go up the range in terms of performance, reliability (apart from the later models having less miles on the clock) or less weight?

Hi,

I have around 5 dell laptops that have been blue screening recently it looks as if it is the graphics drivers but these have all been updated and it still continues to bluescreen.

I have attached the dump files as well as some other files

Anjy help much appreciated!!

A:Dell laptops bluescreening when using usb kensington adapter

OK had a look through your dump files and a few things stuck out at me:

First please install service pack 1:

Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

next please update the following driver it seems to be causing all sorts of problems as it is present in almost all of your dump files:

Code:
fffff880`061b29b8 fffff880`04157000Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\dlkmd.sys, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for dlkmd.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for dlkmd.sys

please update the driver from here: DisplayLink: Windows Software!

I have been interested in buying a 14 inch or 13 inch laptop, but I have some "must have"s before I am willing to buy it:
1) Matte screen (though this can be fixed with certain screen overlay products)
2) dedicated Page Up / Page Down keys (unlike, say, a Macbook, which requires the function key to be pressed along with the up/down keys)
3) Hard Drive Indicator light
4) Good sound from headphones (many computers have terrible sound with headphones, for some reason!)
5) Momentum/Inertia feature for the trackpad.
The Lattitude laptops I saw in microsoft store fulfill 1-3. But laptop makers today have this infuriating pattern to TAKE AWAY features. In this case, their touchpad driver had so many fewer features than older laptops. One must-have for me is the Inertia/Momentum feature, where if you make a flicking motion with your finger, the cursor continues to move, as if you flicked a trackball.
Does anyone know if recent Dell computers can be forced to use a different touchpad driver which has this feature?

I've been highly considering ordering a dell studio 14z from the outlet that dell has. I'm curious what YOUR experience and opinion is with the quality of their certified refurbished laptops?

Thanks,
Trenium

A:What's YOUR opinion and experience with dell refurbished laptops?

I've only dealt with one, but it's worked perfectly for 3 years.
Their refurbished stuff has good warranty, and customer service is still good.

Hello,
I am trying to help out my family with this question: I was trying to connect a Dell Studio 1458 laptop to the internet that we have. There is NO router, only a modem so the ethernet cord hooks directly from the cable modem to the computer. The laptop has wireless and wired internet capabilities (supposedly). It couldn't connect to a wireless internet and it wouldn't connect to the wired connection either. I got the same thing every time "Unidentified network: no internet access" Upon troubleshooting I get this error: "internet IP address cannot be configured." It is almost like the computer is not allowing internet accessing.

The internet works fine because when tried on 2 other computers and everything worked fine. Ironically, this is also happening with my sister's Dell Inspiron laptop. Both computers have Windows 7 64x with Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet network cards. The driver for the network card was updated: no change. The device was disabled / enabled, no change. All firewalls and virus software disabled, no change. There are no detectable errors in the device manager.

I am running out of ideas on what could be causing the problem and how to fix it. I am thinking it has something to do with how dell has the computers set-up, because two new dell computers are having the problem; but I have no idea how to approach it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

LAPTOP EXPERTS
I read the instructions for installing RAM on the Dell C810 Laptop, but am having trouble understanding them. I don't understand what they mean by disengaging the metal tabs. I've removed the screw, but the RAM cover still won't come off. The manual for this model is available by googling "Dell C810" "manual". I've had to service desktops in the past, so I know how to install RAM and how important it is to remove power. Do I have to remove the battery, too? The manual says that I do, but this also entails removing the keyboard and display.

In your experience, how different is it from installing RAM on desktop? Do any of you guys remove the battery before installing RAM or do you go strictly by the manual when installing RAM?

A:Installing RAM on Dell laptops - LAPTOP EXPERTS

Most laptops just have you remove a cover on the back and some have you install it under the keyboard. Maybe the cover has some additional metal tabs or clips that have to be retracted in order to remove the cover. I really don't think you need to remove the reserve battery. I never even take out the main power supply battery to change memory.

Hello everyone,

Both the laptops Dell Inspiron 15R and Dell Inspiron 7548 came with 6 GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to at least 12 GB by replacing the 2 GB dimms in both laptops with 8 GB dimms.

Was wondering whether it is safe and okay to combine different memory modules from different manufacturers.

I'm also leaving the US next week and so would prefer getting RAM that's more reliable and wouldn't mess up the laptops.

Could you guys please recommend which ones you'd get? I've bought Samsung and Crucial in the past and didn't have any issues.

Here's the existing RAM information from CPU–Z:

Inspiron 15R:

Inspiron 7548:

Based on the above information, could you please recommend the sticks that you would get, preferably from Amazon?

Dell's upgrade page for Inspiron 15R recommends this one:

Dell 8 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 1600MHz LV SODIMM : Memory | Dell which is 1600 MHz.

So can I get this one for that laptop: Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

This would match the manufacturer of the existing stick (Kingston).

Dell's upgrade page recommended the same stick for Dell Inspiron 7548 as well.

Since I wasn't able to locate Hyundai's 8GB stick, is it okay if I get Kingston or Crucial's stick:

Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L (PC3-12800) 1.35V Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM Intel Laptop Memory KVR16LS11/8 at Amazon.com

Can't comment on the compatibility, however, make sure laptops support 8GB RAM in a single slot, with 16GB total.

I have two laptops, a Dell Inspiron 5758, and a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming that I just received. The colors on the latter are beautiful in every area except for one - in the internet browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) some colors seem washed out or different. I'd share screens of this, but when I bring the screens over to the Inspiron 5758, they look completely normal, so I'm assuming they'll look completely normal here as well. I've been trying to find solutions to this on my own to no avail (the closest I've managed to come is thinking it might have something to do with Nvidia), and at this point, I'm not sure if this is something I'll be able to find a fix for, or if I'll need to send it in for repairs for. Anyone know what I can do about this?

Hello all,
I would like to ask your opinion about Dell Australia technical support and Dell Pro support (the one you pay extra for next business day service).  What do you think about it? Are you satisfied? I am starting to believe that it is actually a scam. Let me explain:
A few days ago my laptop (Dell XPS 15 Haswell) died, it wouldn't power up. I called support and they told me they will send someone to replace the motherboard in 2 days (it was 17:30 or something). I also explained them that it is very important to have the laptop up and running this week because this is the laptop I use to work. After two days the technician came at my place (he was late, I missed two important meetings at work because of that) and replaced the motherboard.  After he left I realised that the laptop will power up itself after shut down from both Windows and Linux. To avoid that I had to hard-shut down (press power button continuously). I called them back and the PRO support was insisting that it was a software problem. I was explaining them that this is impossible based on several facts. They even asked me to run a GPU test from windows which was just testing the D3D11 capabilities of the GPU. Clearly the technicians at PRO support are incompetent. After spending 2+ hours on the phone they realised the obvious: The problem was indeed a hardware problem. Also, they told me that the replacement parts for the laptop are always refurbished parts. I kinda understand the poi... Read more

Hello Dell,

I see that new Precision series ships with Radeon Pro WX 4130 and WX 4150 graphic cards.
Is there any way to order one of these cards directly through Dell?

I'm curious if these cards are compatible with older Precision M4600 laptop.
M4600 works with AMD FirePro M5100 card.... I imagine it will work with newer WX 4130 card as well?
Please confirm this for me.

Thanks in advance,

A:Radeon Pro WX 4130 with 2GB GDDR5 card for Dell Laptops?

You'd have to call Dell Spare Parts for a price;  these cards use a newer format (MXM-A) that's smaller than the older MXM 3, so it's possible they may not fit your system. I don't think Dell would make any guarantees - you'd have to pay your money and try.
