BSOD and crash during encoding with Handbrake

Q: BSOD and crash during encoding with Handbrake

I recently got into ripping Blu-ray movies and encoding them. However I have recently had a few blue screens with restarts. I use MakeMKV and it usually runs fine and doesn't give my problems. However, I have had problems encoding the MKV files with Handbrake v0.9.5. Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 64-bit Pro SP1
Intel Core i5-2500K (overclocked to 4 GHz)
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B)
ASRock Pro3 Gen3 Mobo (latest BIOS update 2.30)
Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HD
Nvidia GTX 560TI graphics card (slightly overclocked, can't remember speed)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler

The case also has plenty of fans (7 to be exact). 2 intake fans in the front, 1 intake in the side, 1 intake on the front of the cooler, 1 outtake on the rear of the cooler, and 2 outtake on the back and top. So the tower is staying cool. I'm running AXTU Hardware Monitor during the encoding and temps are staying steady around 50C, which I've heard are normal. The encoding is about 50% now and so far no crashes or spikes in temperature.
I thought the memory may be the culprit and I ran MemTest86. It returned one error after a few hours of running. I have not taken the RAM out to test each module or clean the slots. The timing is set at 9-9-9-24 and I dialed down the speed to 1333 from 1600.
That's all I can think of now but if I forgot something, don't be afraid to ask. Please someone help me!

Preferred Solution: BSOD and crash during encoding with Handbrake

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I get the aforementioned BSOD, only in one specific situation, and it happens 100% of the time. Otherwise, I never get BSODs in this computer. The problem happens only when I open Handbrake, and drop an mp4 on it to use as a source. The moment I do that, boom BSOD. It's extremely strange. I have tried reinstalling Handbrake of course to no avail. For now my only solution is to have a Ubuntu VM with Handbrake and run it that way. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.

I've recently started having a problem whenever I try to encode or convert video files. Any file that ends up being over about 30mb in size while being encoded will cause my computer to throw up the BSOD. When I get back onto my desktop I'm told that the problem is with the nforce SATA drivers and that I should download the newest drivers. Thing is, I've done that. I've done some searching around and found that this isn't an uncommon problem, but haven't found any sort of answer that helps me out. I would appreciate any suggestion from anyone. I leave it to you and your vast computer knowledge.

This is a computer that I built a couple of months ago and it consistently crashes when running handbrake, not every time but say 3 out of 4 times. It will also crash when making large file transfers like moving my movies from one hard drive to another. I have ran Memtest86 without any problems. I have also ran Prime95. When running prime95 these are the options:

It ran the first two options with no problems, but crashes pretty quickly when running the blend test.

Here is a copy of the report from reliability manager for the crash:

A:BSOD when running handbrake or during large file transfers

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

Hello, I have been getting BSODs quite frequently when I'm trying to encode video. Since this is a very cpu intensive process I assumed it was due to my overclock. I went back to stock on my processor, and I am still seeing these errors no matter what program I'm using to encode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HotSpot Shield is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems - please uninstall it immediately.

Please install the chipset drivers for your system/motherboard
Your HiDefinition Audio is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Lot's of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32 - may be indicative of a hardware problem. Please do this:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx

A:BSOD and crashes - during encoding

Hi and Welcome to SF videofx

Usual causes: Defective hardware (particularly memory - but not just RAM), Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS

memory corruption was blamed in the minidump. I would download third party called memtestx86, burn it to CD using iso recorder http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/W7.htm , and let it run for at least 7 passes.

Also, in looking through your loaded drivers, I see you have this old driver:

ASACPI ASACPI.sys Mon Mar 28 09:30:36 2005 (42476C4C)
It is dated from 2005, which is known for causing BSOD, please update it, follow the instruction in this article:

I have been trying to create a DVD-Video using Nero software. This has caused blue screens multiple times tonight. The encoding will work for maybe a third of the video then the PC crashes. The BSOD's have different headings, one mentioned a hardware error and another said that a driver had overran a stack-based buffer.

I have had BSOD's in the past, generally while playing computer games and found that disabling my virtual memory stopped this problem, due to this the first BSOD errors are not recorded.

One very important info is missing here .... have you enabled the Driver verifier yourself? And is it crashing the same way even without driver verifier? Cannot have the answer from the data, as there are two crash dumps and both are DV enabled.

What is catching the attention that there are two consecutive crash dumps with totally two different nature. One indicates to a hardware failure, and the other indicates to either a failing device driver or a malware. Now let us have a look at your files.

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.
Click this button only:

If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Next, scan the system for possible virus infection with the following programs.

Windows Defender Offline
Then update the logitech drivers.

I got a couple of BSODs both while encoding H.264 with adobe media encoder. I was also using Samsung Kies and browsing the web with Chrome. I have encoded plenty of H.264 without issue, but I'm thinking there much be a glitch with the file I'm currently trying to encode, as since I have stopped trying no BSOD. If someone could verify it is adobe media encoder causing the BSOD, I would be most grateful.

Thank you kindly for your time.

You try HandBrake: Open Source Video Transcoder to encode to H.264.

My goal is to do some Crysis live commentary and the computer keeps randomly crashing when playing the game (or any other game) and consistently crashing when encoding the video (crashed with 2 different programs).

System info:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
Microsoft Security Essential
CPU: Phenom II X4 955
RAM: F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
GPU: 2 x AX5770 1GBD5-H (Crossfire)

- Randomly BSOD or Hangs when playing Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Starcraft 2
- Consistently BSOD or Hangs when encoding videos with PowerDirector 10 and Adobe Premiere 10

Tests or thing I've tried:

- Prime95: 1 error (not pro enough to understand the rest)
- AMD Overdrive: crashing sometimes on stability test
- Temperatures of CPU and GPU are ok.
- Tried using single GPU, nothing changed.

Thank you very much for your pro support guys!

Hey all,
I'm having an issue with my ASUS F5GL laptop. If I try to launch a game like Counter-Strike: Source, Garry's Mod or Just Cause 2, not long after actually leaving the menu and beginning to play (anywhere between 2-5min), the whole laptop just silently crashes. I checked ALL the logs, and there is nothing in there, except something recorded at boot, saying the computer was not cleanly shutdown. When it does crash, a second before it crashes, a weird thin horizontal line appears in a random location on the screen, going all the way across the screen. This was happening under Windows Vista, but I just bought and did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium, and it's still happening. I have updated my drivers and it still happens. My month and half old Acer V3 started to give BSOD's, did some sort of recovery and started working again for a couple of hours, if not trying to access any Windows files. If tried to look up error logs etc it gave different versions of the BSOF. So I tried to run Recovery, getting it back to factory settings, and that's when Windows crashed completely. I followed Acer customer support advice, ordered recovery discs (couldn't create one because Windows crashed when trying it. I got the recovery discs, ran the recovery which ended up giving me failure because of "missing image-something". Another call to Acer and they told to run different recovery version from the puter.

That recovery end to a failure again. After several restarts and what not, windows started up again, being slower than usual. I'm now having constant problems losing internet connection, I've had couple minidumbs and several issues with windows updater and such and these after machine should be back in the factory settings. Anyhow, here's the last log if anyone could take a look on it before I throw this machine to the wall.

A:BSOD and total windows crash and recovery crash/failure

For starters:

At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

In particular, start with the hard drive diagnostics as I suspect that is the problem.

Although there's only 2 memory dumps (it usually takes 4 or 5 to conclude if it's a hardware error or not) - the repeated failure of factory installs makes a hardware failure the most likely problem here. Please run the diagnostics that I suggested above and let us know the results.

There are a list of drivers that need updating (because the recovery media was made a while ago). Don't worry about them until you've finished the hardware diagnostics. If all the diagnostics pass, then update the drivers.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If I own a DVD purchased out a shop and I want to place a copy on my Hard Drive, is it legal in the UK to do this? I can't answer about the legality, but I can tell you that you skipped a step. You need something to remove the protection first. The most common and easiest method is to use DVDfab HD Decrypter (which is free) to rip the movie to your HDD, and then Handbrake can take that folder and turn it into whatever type file you need.

Hi. I've recently been trying to play Metal Gear Solid 5 but every time I boot it up my PC either crashes as soon as the splash screens are done or after a few minutes. It's been crashing while playing other games as well but it's been much rarer. It's not a BSOD crash and it doesn't produce any crash dumps so I'm leaning towards it being a problem with either the PSU, the motherboard or one of the graphics cards. Any help with finding the cause of this would be appreciated.
The PSU model is fd-psu-newt2-800, the graphics cards are both Nvidia GTX760s and the motherboard is a ASUS Sabertooth Z77

I've found plenty of strings online to try in the newer versions, yet none of the outputted files will play back on my 360. Ones done in the older 0.9.3 with the 360 profile work just fine, on my computer and the console.

Is there anyway around this, or anyway to get the original profile settings into 0.9.5?

The only thing i can think of is Taking note of what your 360 profile settings are in .9.3 and re-creating them in .9.5.

Also, the AppleTV/AppleTV 2 profiles should work on your 360.

Recently downloaded some full movie (mp4), and found a Hebrew subtitle. Located both files in a folder,
opened the subtitle with Notepad, made some minor editing, saved it (encoding UTF-8) srt file,
movie and subtitle same name.
Played the movie in any player on the system, the subtitle rans perfect, no need to adjust timing.
Then I loaded the movie in "HandBrake ( - 32bit)", imported the subtitle, selected Hebrew and
utf-8, made a small preview file - subtitle was not added.
Note, I used the same procedure several times ago with other movies - results were good.
Do not know what happened, I would ask for some help please.

sorry, but we cannot assist with this, unfortunately.

from the rules page:

Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. If we can find a nice way to draw the line, we may reconsider this in the future as laws get sorted out.Click to expand...

Apple iTunes - the world's best digital music player and the NO.1 music store. Download music, movies, TV shows, apps, and more to your Mac, PC, iPod, and iPhone.
HandBrake - a free Mac OS X/Windows utility for ripping videos from DVDs and saving them in various formats including MP4 files that are playable by the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Alternative to Handbrake ? special offer page, substitutes in place of Handbrake?s goods, seem to be the same and even better.

Movie fan and Apple fan I am and love the stuffs listed above so much. I often use Handbrake to convert Blu-ray movies or videos downloaded from iTunes to MP4 on Macbook. Things turned different then. Because I own a big collection of Blu-rays and want to put them on iTunes, this totally frustrated me. Which software or somewhat called alternative to Handbrake actually converts copy-protected Blu-ray movies directly to iTunes? I want to go both directions. The question bothers me day and night, so I have to do something. Doing Google search, asking friends for help, anything I tried gives different answers. Handbreak does not support cracking copy-protection.
What you're looking for is a tool to do that, and I can't recommend anything of that sort.

Inspiron 14R-5437 Intel Core i3-4010U processor with Intel HD Graphics 4400, 8GB of system memory, a 500GB hard drive. Handbrake working, did an upgrade, won't rips movies anymore, gets stuck as it tries to download movie. Handbrake activity log says as Handbrake is trying to (unsuccessfully) rip the movie: libdvdread: Get key for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_0.VOB at 0x002d7dc3
Also further down on activity log: dvd: DVDReadBlocks failed (77729), skipping to vobu 77797.
And further down still: [23:48:41] dvd: vobu read error blk 105615 - skipping to next blk incr 10

I have no idea what any of it means or what it is trying to tell me. What is the key I'm supposed to get for /VIDEO_TS/VTS_04_0.VOB at 0x002d7dc3?

Anyone out there on planet earth (don't have to limit it to earth if that helps) can explain to me what the above (to me) gibberish means? I have already downloaded libdvdread some time ago and added it so I can rip movies, but now no go.

Suddenly handbrake is not doing what handbrake always do. Having upgraded to most recent handbrake causing the problem, whereby I included in to the handbrake file this: libdvdread. Still nothing. Should I go back to last version of handbrake I was using, see if that works? I've already deleted current handbrake and reinstalled it. Still won't rip DVD movies anymore. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

i'm getting a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD shortly after or by execution of the win10 version of handbrakeCLI (uses x264 encoder).
In compability mode (win7) it seems to work.

I updated the drivers before the last bluescreen (from the Lenovo homepage) but that didn't do the trick.

Laptop was upgraded from Win8 to Win10 some while ago. Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

A:KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE while attempting to use x264/Handbrake

Could you explain to me what this handbrakeCLI software is? I'm unfamiliair with it.

Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

Most of the crashes show some stuff of the DirectX Kernel graphics (dxgmms2.sys) what points to the display drivers usually.
The ntoskrnl.exe is Windows Kernel, simplified it is never the true cause unless you experience a hell lot of problems (much more then only bluescreens).

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

Hello. I'm ripping DVDs so that I can post snippets of scenes to put on Youtube videos within fair dealing laws. I'm trying to rip DVDs with Handbrake and it does create a file with playable videos, and there are no problems with the sound. However the picture quality comes out noticeably degraded. This might be a compression but I'm not sure.

I've tried adjusting the bar of the "Constant Quality -- RF" bar under the video section to increase image quality before downloading and adjusting over relevant variables but to no avail.

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

Hi. Until yesterday, I had Handbrake 10.2 installed. On launch, a message appeared (within the GUI) inviting me to click for 10.3. Which I did. I can't recall the exact sequence of events but it appeared to have gone smoothly and I was left with a popup saying Do you really want to uninstall 10.2? I said Yes as that seemed logical.

I then went to open up 10.3 ? nothing there. The only Handbrake related file I could find was a defunct link to the shortcut I had on my desktop. Ah well, so off I went and downloaded the 10.3 installer. But before I ran it, I used regedit to delete all registry entries referring to Handbrake. That way, my PC would be 'clean' right?

After the install, 10.3 launched and immediately showed a message about my previous presets and there it was ? 10.3 had the custom preset that I'd made with 10.2! Not only that, but 10.3 was able to load a DVD with DRM protection. To do that with 10.2, I had to copy a 'special' dll file into Program Files/Handbrake.

It seems I was mistaken then. Uninstalling a program and then deleting registry entries doesn't 'clean' your PC. Otherwise, my Handbrake 10.3 wouldn't have known about my old preset nor would it have the 'special' dll file.

So how DO you completely remove a program?

My windows is closing unexpectedly when ever I'm trying to convert videos using Handbrake and render my work files on Premier Pro. Before I didn't face this kind of problem it's happening after giving my Mother Board for servicing because of some power problem. I tried in all possible ways I know to fix this problem like reinstalling all codecs and programs, I also reinstalled my Windows but there is no change. I'm using Windows 7 Service Pack 1 with latest updates. Except this almost every thing is normal. How to fix this problem, is this happening because of problem in Mother Board?

Hi there

Converting 1080p MKV files encoded in H264 to H265

What's the best setting to use keeping original quality as much as possible -- a 2hr film currently with my H264 encode is around 4GB for MKV file.

The source is full HD 1080p captured from SKY Q minibox. Quality on playback is excellent but I want to store a lot of these on an external HDD so want to compress the size down a bit.

(note you need to use an HDMI splitter to get stuff off the SKY Q minibox otherwise the capture device won't see anything (DRM).

The capture device doesn't unfortunately capture in H265 which is why I need the conversion step.

I would like to get about 50% of that size with H265 - but not sure of the settings in Handbrake I should use.

Any video editors here --help please !!!!!

I'm not bothered if the final container is MKV or MP4 so long as it's encoded H265 and quality is very similar (preferably identical) to original file.

For ease of use, i want to make a folder available at my company network for people to drop any video files in, and then to make it output to a standard format (mp4) in another folder. That way no one will have to wait for a video to finish encoding or have to think about conversion at all.

I can use a computer that is always on and running, connected to the network and with free space and processing power, but i wonder if this is the right way. What i have so far:

Using Syncback Pro, I'm automatically watching for file changes in the folder, then syncing the changed files to a local folder (so not to directly encode from the network. Then, after each sync i have Syncback run a bat file for converting, which is inside the local folder. This is the code:

FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('DIR /S /B *.*') DO "C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI" -i "%%G" -o "%%G".mp4 --preset="Normal"

The problem is that it outputs in the same folder as it inputs, which makes syncing back to the network sloppy. The next step in the process, which would be to sync the output files back to the network can be easily done, but not if the original and converted files are jumbled together. =

My question would be:

Am i doing this the right way? (in the broadest sense)
Is there a way to output handbrakeCLI converted files to a different folder?

Any help is appreciated.

A stop 0x116 is a display/graphics related issue. Many a factors or components may cause such a BSOD.

First of all, it is the display driver. From your BSOD dumps, I have noticed that it crashed the same irrespective of the driver version over time. So overlooking this part right now. Will concentrate it on later again, if needed.

Next thing is overclocking, which sometimes lead display to crash. And, you are slightly overclocked.

CPUID: "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz"
MaxSpeed: 3400
CurrentSpeed: 3411
As the system is crashing, you should stop overclocking. Set all the hardware elements like CPU, GPU and RAM to default; and reset the BIOS to default too.

Heat is another factor. Is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy.

Also, dust accumulation causes heat, and dust accumulation depends on the age of the system. How old the system is? If possible, dismantle it and clean the inside carefully .... specially the air vents and fan grills, so that it can blow the hot air out easily.
Dont forget to apply thermal paste to the CPU when re-seating the system.

Insufficient power supply is also a great cause of display crash. Check if the CPU is supplying adequate power there or not.
