Printer spooler keeps stopping and printer drivers keep disappearing

Q: Printer spooler keeps stopping and printer drivers keep disappearing

I use Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. My problem is: Whenever I try to print something (word, pdf, or any other file); printer spooler stops working and when I check the “Devices and Printers” all the printer drivers seem to be disappeared.

I checked the “Print Spooler” in the “Services” tool; and set the "Recovery after subsequent failures" option to “Restart the Service”. Therefore all the printer drives coma back after 1 minute. However the spooler stops immediately again when the uncompleted printing job starts; hence I can not print anything more than a page.

Earlier in this forum, someone posted that Microsoft issued a hotfix for this problem ( hotfix 2388142) which can be downloaded from article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2388142.

I downloaded this hotfix and tried to install, however it gives an error message of: “The update is not applicable to your computer” and quits installation.

I did uninstall and reinstall all the printer drives, but this did not help either.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Printer spooler keeps stopping and printer drivers keep disappearing

Yeah, I had the same issue. Even when I went into services and restarted it, it would shut back down and the printers would disappear. I tried working with the registry like a few suggested, but didn't help. The only fix that worked for me was to go back about a week on the restore point, and then all the printers reappeared and worked...

Printer Spooler keeps stopping. I've got a laptop (Vista 32) that was connected to a network and could print through an XP machine.

Then the printer spooler stopped, and it refused to start again. I've scoured the internet trying to find a way to fix it, but i have failed. I can't even try to "add a printer."

I"m afraid it doesn't take much for something to get out of my depth on the computer. But after a few hours a day, I really need your help .

Any thoughts?

Tried adding new HP printer drivers (m177 to a m452dn) however, now receiving a printer spooler failure with the resulting output:
Windows can't Add Printer.
The remote procedure call failed
and
Windows can't open Add Printer.
The local print spooler service is not running. Please restart the spooler or restart the machine.
I've tried windows recover, importing a registry known working registry file and copy /spool from working donor, but continuing to receive the problem.

Is there a good resource or troubleshooting guide or documentation online to reference?
Running system file checker now to see if that will discover what occurred (sfc /scannow)

I was having trouble with the printer spooler stopping, finally got it fixed after 4 stressful days, went to Administrative tools, print management and deleted the print jobs that were waiting to be printed and it worked! YEAH!!!! you may have to go to services and restart your printer spooler first before it will recognize your printer.

Hey guys, at 1st i thought I had a solution with

HTML:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/568893-solved-print-spooler-service-not.html
but my problem persists. I was about to print pictures using Windows Picture And Fax viewer when the power cord got unplugged. I rebooted and now i can't see my printer in Printers and Faxes! I can't add a printer because it keeps saying "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler is not running." I tried everything to get the spooler to run but it always stops when I try to uninstall/install/or add a printer. I'm thinking it could be spoolsv.exe is corrupted? Anyone have a copy? Many thanks

Hi,

We have a Windows 2000 Terminal Server, which keeps having problems with the spooler service. When I log on, the server is very slow, and the spoolersv.exe is at the top of the CPU usage list. Then, the spooler service stops and I loose all my printers. I have set the spooler service to automatically recover, and restart if stopped, but this keeps happening, and the performance and reliablilty is very poor. There are 53 printers in the printer list, and there are no end of warnings in the event log telling me that printers are being added and pending deletion. But as I understand, this is normal within terminal services. Has anyone come across this problem before?

Thanks a lot for any help,

Daniel Murfitt

And i follow the exact directions from the manual to install into the computer, which are as follows:
1. If usb cord is connected between printer and computer, un connect and shut off printer.
2. Turn on computer, and insert Setup CD-ROM into the cd-rom drive.
3. Click run Msetup4.exe on the AutoPlay screen then click continue on the user account control dialog box.

And by the time it starts to install, it cancels and a page pops up. and this is what is says.
PROCESSING CANNOT BE CONTINUED BECAUSE THE PRINT SPOOLER SERVICE HAS BEEN STOPPED. RESTART THE COMPUTER TO START THE PRINT SPOOLER SERVICE AND THEN START AGAIN.
Multiple times i have restarted my computer, and it always says the same thing..
Also, i have done the whole,
1. Click on start
2. right click on computer
3. click on manage
4. go to services and applications
5. click services
6. scroll down to print spoolers (spoolers)
and this has not worked for me because, the Print Spoolers and or Spoolers is not there.

A:Installing a canon printer, but it wont install due to a print spooler service stopping

PROCESSING CANNOT BE CONTINUED BECAUSE THE PRINT SPOOLER SERVICE HAS BEEN STOPPED. RESTART THE COMPUTER TO START THE PRINT SPOOLER SERVICE AND THEN START AGAIN.

Please proceed like that:
1- Click on start > run > CMD
2- Run this command: net start "print spooler"
That should start PRINT SPOOLER SERVICE.

Arrrrrgh! New HP/Compaq Presario V6000 Notebook came loaded with Vista Home Premium. Once desktop opens, the dreaded message appears: "Spooler Subsystem App has stopped working." Tech support at HP/Compaq has not been able to start the Spooler & keep it started. When it is Off, no printer drivers can be downloaded (either from the Net, from a disc or from Vista's library of printer drivers. Bottom line: this computer cannot be hooked up to a printer. Arrrrrgh!

Something that might be a clue: NONE of the Services current Start-Stop; Manual/ Automatic/Disabled, setting can be changed. More accurately, when changes are attempted within Properties the attempt fails, either immediately or within a few seconds. In the case of starting the Printer Spooler, a small window opens saying that Windows is attempting to turn on the service and the bar begins to fill with green...but after a second or two, the bar stops filling and the window closes.

After not being able to solve the problem, HP's idea is to do a Recovery. Which I'd rather not. So, has anyone else encountered this problem and been able to come up with a fix? Arrrrrgh!

A:Printer Spooler Won't Start: Print Drivers Won't Install

Sounds like an errant setting within Windows itself. Short of changing every setting on the system, a System Restore will probably be the easiest fix available.

Having not found anything relevant by doing a forum search, herewith my plaint:

Several months ago, when I wanted to print something, an error message indicated that there was no printer driver installed, and a look at Devices and Printers in the Control Panel showed that to be correct. (There might have been one printer shown, I"m not certain.) A restart of the printer found all eight drivers available; a single instance, apparently.

Unfortunately, it has now happened twice over the past few weeks. Both the LaserJet and the OfficeJet worked perhaps thirty hours ago, and no changes made since that time. A short while ago, no LaserJet driver; Devices and Printers showed only the same driver that was there a few weeks ago when the same problem occurred, the OfficeJet driver. Both times, a restart of the computer restored all drivers, the others being fax drivers, a Quicken driver, a PaperPort driver, etc.

Computer is self-standing, non-networked, Home Premium 32-bit, no known poltergeists.

Curiously, after printing a while ago, after the restart, the Action Center icon appeared, so I clicked on it to open the Action Center, which stated that no problems had been reported, but as I was about to close it, the "problem chaser" started, and eventually reported that the FireFox plug-in container process had crashed four times, including once today. (That is a somewhat known problem, as this new part of Firefox is known to not yet be totally reliable.) I don't kno... Read more

Hi, I have been chasing this for many, many hours.

The Print Spooler kept stopping, I would restart it but every time I went to my HP 1020 Laser printer it would say "Unable to continue, print spooler is not running", and sure enough it was stopped again.

SOLUTION: Found in an older thread here:
XP print spooler keeps stopping

I had two weird files, including a movie file in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

I guess this is the spool file?

I deleted those files, turned my printer off and on again, and it WORKS!!!

And the Print Spooler keeps running all the time.

I guess those files barfed the spooler???

A:[SOLVED] Win XP Printer Spooler keeps stopping: SOLVED

Hi Terry,

Welcome to TSF.

Just to save your sanity, the 'System32\Spool\Printers' folder is where the jobs are stored, so if your spooler got stuck, the jobs would hang there.

Some people have previously reported 90~99% of their processor is jammed against the Spoolsv.exe service and others have reported that they have had up to 3GB (+/-200mb) in the 'System32\Spool\Printers' folder.

Looks like those files did indeed barf the spooler!

Hope you've learned a little something something from this buddy.

Best, Crit.

If you are reading this, your solution helped me reinstall my printer. I was getting the print spooler app error message in Vista, as you were, and this is what I did upon following the advice in your blog. You definately helped me with a frustrating problem, and now I would like to help others with the same problem.

1. I went to Device Manager and clicked on View -> Show Hidden
Devices. Selected System Devices. And Uninstalled both the UMBus
Enumerator as well as the UMBus Root Bus Enumerator.

2. Rebooted.

3. Downloaded the drivers for my printer (Dell A960)

4. Installed the drivers for my printer from the download.

5. Printer worked.

This is this readers digest condensed version of Perrylea's solution.

Hello,
I have a Brother 450 CW printer that is offline and when I try to print, it also says,"printing spooling." I was able to print on this print a week ago. Wondering how to fix it? We have a wireless connection. It shows 5 bars for the wireless connection on the printer. I have test printed on the printer to see if it works, it does work. I changed the print cartridges. I have went to the control panel and it shows that the printer is ready. So, what is the problem? I have went to services.msc, and restarted the print spooling. Still nothing. I have disconnected the printer several times. Still nothing. I am getting very frustrated! I am also running out of options. I did a system restore, thinking that would work. Nope. My wife installed the printer onto her computer and has the same problems. I did a Microsoft scan, and it came up that I had a trojan horse, but it was removed. Still have the problems. Welcome frustrated.
Assuming that you have installed the software before you plugged in the printer?

I have one real important questions. when you say you have cleaned up the registry, what did you use?

Also, what other programs are running when you tried to install the printer?
you said that you set the printer up to be wireless, how are you selecting it in the install printer option?

I rfecommend installing the printer via the usb cable first and then converting it to wireless connection.

you might try that before you get too frustrated..

My Mom has an HP laptop. She recently purchased a new HP printer and I have been trying for the last 4 days to get it to install/connect. I've been in touch with HP but the links they provide aren't resolving the issues.

First, using the CD that came with the printer: hangs up at around 85-90%. It doesn't not show up as installed. I copied the CD to the desktop, modified Setup.exe in CFFExplorer and Run as Administrator and it appears to completely install; however, when I go to Device Manager, it says no driver is found. I sometimes have the option to update and sometimes that seems to work but I can't access it through Add a Printer (which has the green bar run across the top, then pulsate and freeze).

Trying to install using the driver I download from HP results in no installing screen appearing but it does hang up in the background and the only way to stop it is to Restart. The same thing happens if I try to use HPs Wizard.

I've installed several HP printers through the years and not had this much trouble. That doesn't even include the dozens of times I've had to reinstall my own HP printer because of its contrariness!

Additionally, attempts to uninstall the old printer results in it hanging up/freezing soon in to the process, whether I try to uninstall from the Start menu, file or Uninstall program. I'm not even being able to get the Windows Updates to install - that process also just hangs up/freezes. FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while so there are ma... Read more

A:Unable to install printer drivers, uninstall old printer, update Windo

Hi columbia93, welcome to 7F!

Printers are touchy animals, when installing any printer you have to follow the install procedures exactly as described by the manufacturer.

This may be the root cause:

Quote:
FYI - I've not checked her machine in a while

Not that you haven't been able to check it, but there may be an accumulation of problems on your Mom's machine that also are stopping the update process.

I am trying to find one of 7F's tutorials on improving performance of a computer, but it boils down to cleaning out all detritus that a machine can accumulate of a period of time.
I did find this but there is another one: Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover The first three options would help

Run Antimalware/virus scans, run a Check Disk then a sfc /scannow then try to uninstall that old printer driver, and if that works shut down the machine, and try to install the printer without the HP disk, when it looks, but asks if you have the disk say no and allow the OS to install what it has.
It is my understanding that HP Printer drivers already come with Windows 7.

But do the cleanup first and see if that helps.

Hi guys,

Kind of annoying problem here... I have an HP LaserJet 1200 hooked up via USB to a Mac that is running 10.5 (Leopard). For the printer's first 5 years or so everything was great. I could get new computers set up to print to the printer with no troubles, until recently.

Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and wanted to get the printer working again. I attempted to install the printer using the HP LaserJet 1200 PCL 6 printer drivers. It connected to the printer alright, but every time I printed it came out with a PCL XL Error: "Error: UnsupportedProtocol" instead of my document.

Now, every time I try to connect a new computer (Windows 7 or Windows XP, doesn't matter) the printer automatically installs the PCL 6 driver for the printer... which always prints out an error instead of the document I want. I can't find a way to manually choose the driver when I'm adding it because it's a network printer, not one that's locally hooked up.

I tried installing the PCL 5 driver manually, but the printer still ONLY wants the PCL 6 driver that gives me the errors. I tried to go to "Server Properties" while in Printers and Faxes to roll back the PCL 6 driver, but Windows can't find a driver to roll it back to.

Now, if I physically hook the printer up to the computer via a USB cable, it installs the PCL5 Driver and it works... but that's only when it's plugged directly in.

I'm extremely frustrated a... Read more

I ran the services.msc, found the print spooler, right click and clicked start but it gave me this error message, “0x800706b9:Not enough resources . . .

On the Devices screen I cannot delete a printer or add a printer.

Is there anything to do except buy a new printer?
If I do install a new printer will I have the same spooler problem?
I’m willing to try anything you might suggest.
Thank-you, Ray

I am trying to re-install my printer (lexmark x2500) but I am having problems. When I go to Printers and Faxes and click on "Add Printer" I get the message "Operation could not be completed. The Printer Spooler Service is not running". I have already went into the Services and made sure that it was turned on Automatic and started it. But yet it still isn't working. Also when I plug in the USB cord for the printer into my laptop, it says down at the bottom of the screen, "Found New Hardware" but when I click on it to begin the installation, at the end it tells me "There was a problem installing this hardware. The RPC server is unavailable." I have also went into Services and made sure that the RPC was automatic and started. Still nothing. I don't understand why this is happening because in January I was able to install the printer just fine but the only mistake I made was I clicked a button that made the printer only show up as a Scanner. I have tried uninstalling the Scanner but it always shows back up once I have deleted it. Please someone help me.

Go to start/run and type in services.msc then locate where it says print spooler and enable it by double clicking on it and clicking auto. This should sort it out. Max.

Hello and welcome to TSG,

Continue as follows please:

Change the download folder setting in the default Browser so all tools we may use are saved to the Desktop:

Google Chrome - Click the "Customize and control Google Chrome" button in the upper right-corner of the browser.
Choose Settings. at the bottom of the screen click the
"Show advanced settings..." link. Scroll down to find the Downloads section and click the Change... button. Select your desktop and click OK.

Mozilla Firefox - Click the "Open Menu" button in the upper right-corner of the browser. Choose Options. In the downloads section, click the Browse button, click on the Desktop folder and the click the "Select Folder" button. Click OK to get out of the Options menu.

Internet Explorer - Click the Tools menu in the upper right-corner of the browser. Select View downloads. Select the Options link in the lower left of the window. Click Browse and select the Desktop and then choose the Select Folder button. Click OK to get out of the download options screen and then click Close to get out of the View Downloads screen.
NOTE: IE8 Does not support changing download locations in this manner. You will need to download the tool(s) to the default folder, usually Downloads, then copy them to the desktop.

Hello,

If you go into services.msc locate print spooler, lexbces server make sure they are set to automatic and they are started, check their dependencies and make sure those are turned on too, then try and print.

Long story short, I have a printer and print to IP. I need the option under the advanced printer settings for "spool directly to printer" to stay selected. Every time I log off and back on the printer goes back to spooling. I've tried disabling
the print spooler in Services altogether, however when I do that Devices and Printer show no printer at all.

I deleted too much from my PC, and now I can't get my printer to work. When I go to Administrative Tools-Services-Print Spooler, the spooler is disabled. If I try to enable it, I receive a MMC message: "Could not start the printer spooler service on local coomputer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Can somebody help?

A:Printer Spooler

Try completley re-install your printer?
Unplug it, uninstall al the drivers and stuff and then re-install it like you did when you first got the printer

...I've got a shared printer, shared between 5 pc's - 4 of the PC's work fine, one doesn't - when I try to do a test print I get 'Printer properties can not be displayed. The print spooler service is not started.'

I've checked the settings, and it is started, and set to automatic - I've done net stop spooler, and net start spooler, to no avail.

Any ideas, anyone?

A:Printer Spooler problems......

What operating systems are working with the printer and which one is not?
Is the printer password protected at all?
Do you have a firewall installed on the one computer?

This kind of error usually means that the computer that is not printing cannot detect the print spooler of the computer where the printer is attached.

click on start and then go to run, in the run dialog box type services.msc and hit enter.
services window will come up , in the right pane locate Print spooler. Double click on it and makes service status : Start. Startup type : Automatic. This will hopefully solve your problem
