X1C (6th gen) trackpad not working for Linux

Q: X1C (6th gen) trackpad not working for Linux

Hey I just brought the X1Carbon (6th generation) and wanted to install Linux. While booting and installing Linux (kubuntu 16.04) the trackpad is not working well. Sometimes I am able to move the mouse but most of the time only the keys are working. On Lenovo Support I checked for device driver updates but couldn't find any. Am I the only one having this problem? Maybe you can help me

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

As per the topic name - I have disabled the trackpad in the BIOS (I only use trackpoint) in order to save some extra battery, but it looks like the trackpad is still recognised and working in Linux.  Is there something wrong with the BIOS setting? Is it working at all?

The Yogs 720 15" running Linux does not support the trackpad.  I have tried several distros and it does not work with any of them.  This is critical.  Please update the bios / firmware or provide a driver to the linux community so that linux is fully supported.  I purchased this laptop intending to run Linux on it and am very very dissapointed.

Since I got my XPS 13 9360, the trackpad is virtually impossible to use: the pointer jumps everywhere, the text gets selected (and even deleted), some programs quit suddenly because the "ghost" pointer clicked on the terminate cross, etc.
It has become impossible to use except in very dedicated usages (e.g., only using the keyboard without the trackpad)… or installing a separate mouse, which is really stupid for such a computer that could be used anywhere (e.g. on a train) and where the mouse becomes a real hassle. (And, come on, using a mouse is so 1990s.)

I tried numerous solutions, including creating file /etc/modprobe.d/xps13-9360.conf and adding blacklist psmouse (as mentioned here), but nothing seems to work.
I use Linux Mint, but the problem occurred as early as the fresh Ubuntu system I received; in fact, during the very first boot of the computer during the customization of Ubuntu, the pointer got crazy, which made me install rather Linux Mint (where the system unfortunately still shows up).
Note that I realized that the pointer gets crazy mostly when doing "drag and drop". It seems that standard moves and clicks will not produce the bug.

Exact Dell version is XPS 13 i7-8Go-256Go-Ubuntu
The system is Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya xfce.
Command uname -a gives 4.10.0-35-generic #39~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 13 09:02:42 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hi, Normally, you just need to turn off SmartSense or PalmCheck the Synaptics control panel - however from what I've seen, this no longer seems to work for Windows 10 versions of this driver. You may be able to get around this as follows. First, download the Synaptics driver on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. Synaptics Driver Version 17.0.18.8 Turn off your wireless card ( should be f12 ). Open windows control panel, open Programs and Features, right click the current Synaptics driver and select Uninstall. When complete, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder and run the Synaptics installer - when this has completed, restart the notebook again. Open the Synaptics settings panel, disable SmartSense or PalmCheck and then check if the touchpad will now work with a keyboard key held down.  If it does, turn your wireless card back on and use the utility on the following link to prevent Windows 10 from automatically updating the Synaptics driver. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3073930 Regards, DP-K

Hi, my Dell Latitude E6400 is about 3 or 4 years old and the trackpad has been playing up over the last few months.

First it would cut out for no apparent reason and stop working (all four mouse buttons and the pointing nub thing) and I would have to restart the computer to get it to work agian. Not a real problem as it didn't happen that often. It then started doing it more and more often. After about a month or two of cutting out randomly it just stopped and started working normally again.

A few weeks later I started using CAD for a University project, the trackpad was being used a lot and it kept cutting out and I would have to restart it to get it working again. It happened three or four times in an hour before finally cutting off completely and restarting the computer wouldn't bring it back.

I thought oh well, I'll just buy a usb mouse and sort out the trackpad when I finish Uni and get home. A few weeks after that, I clicked the right mouse button by accident and the menu popped up! The left button and the touchpad all worked including the nub thing. It fixed itself somehow.

And finally, just a second ago it cut out and restarting won't bring it back.

I have reinstalled the mouse driver and that didn't fix it. I am pretty sure it is a hardware issue, like a dodgy chip, dodgy connection or something. There are no reasons for it to cut out, each time it cutted out I wasn't doing anything intensive apart from the CAD time. The pointing nu... Read more

I have had my Yoga 710 Thinkpad or the last 6 months without any problems, until a couple of days ago, when my Trackpad stopped working.  There is no response from the cursor, which disappears when I use the touchscreen.  I can see the cursor when I press Ctrl, but is completely unresponsive when I try to use the trackpad.

I have been through the forums and tried everything short of resetting the computer with no success:
-Pressed F6.
-Tried to enable the mouse from the control panel, there was no option to enable or disable the touchpad.
-Tried every combination of deleting, updating and checking the mouse driver.
-Updated the BIOS from the website.  I also could not find an option to enable the mouse from the BIOS screen.
-Fully updated Windows 10.
-Booted up the computer in Safe Mode, no joy.

I am running Windows 10 on a Lenovo Yoga 710 14ISK, model 80TY, the touchpad is Synaptics.  According to the Control Panel, the device drivers are up to date, and the device is (apparently) working properly.

I have a 9-month old HP Pavilion 14t with no touchscreen. Recently, my trackpad will simply stop moving. I can do any sort of movement with my fingers on the trackpad, but the mouse on the screen will not move or click. As I have neither a touchscreen nor an external mouse, I would like to figure out why the mouse stops working. It stops moving out of the blue, and I have to just wait until it decides it wants to work again - usually, anywhere from twenty seconds to five minutes. I updated this computer to Windows 10 about two weeks after getting it, but I doubt that that is the problem, as this mouse issue has only been happening sporadically for the last couple of months.

I was just using my ThinkPad as usual today and then Windows automatically updated the Synaptics drivers. This led to both the trackpad and trackpoints not working and I had to use an external mice to use navigate. I fixed the issue by rolling back the driver, which worked until the next restart. I tried to find a more permanent fix so I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled it, but this didn't work and now the drivers are stuck installing. Additionally, because I uninstalled all the previous drivers, I cannot use those ones that work. What makes things worse is that using external mice no longer works so I am now restricted to navigating with the keyboard. I've checked the device manager and it says that the 'device could not start (Code 10)' because 'the device is not in a valid state to perform the request'.  Has anyone else had this issue? Or does anyone know how to rectify this, because otherwise my laptop is going to turn into (quite a heavy!) paperweight. I am reluctant to reinstall Windows incase it doesn't actually solve the issue.

Does anybody know when HP is going to sort out the trackpad issues on the Spectre x360??? I have had two different Spectre x360 machines and both have been rife with trackpad problems, one went away for "repairs" and came back the same. Problems inclue 3 finger swipe up/down to show/close open windows not working, finger side swipes not working to switch between windows, tap to click unresposive and sometimes even mouse click opens notification center rather than what you click on!!! The trackpad on this "premium model" functions worse than a basic trackpad on a netbook. And beforesomeone from  HP comments to turn off and on again, no that doesn't work, settings have been checked and all the gestures are set on, and yes all drivers are up to date. So seriously HP, when are you going to sort it out???

Hi all.. embarassing moment but I spilled coffee all over the keyboard/trackpad of my x250 this morning. I tried drying out the liquid and it seems to function fine except for the trackpad. The trackpad still scrolls but the buttons, both top and lower, don't function. All five mouse buttons (three upper, two lower) act as the middle mouse button. I tried reinstalling the Synaptics drivers but it didn't solve anything unfortunately. Unfortunately I am out of warranty, so any DIY suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you!

A:X250 Trackpad Not Working After Spill

The Hardware Maintenance Manual will show you what is involved in repairing your laptop. So far as I can tell, the trackpad buttons are part of the keyboard bezel, which will involve all the disassembly shown in the keyboard replacement procedure, plus transferring any other parts mounted to the keyboard bezel which are not part of the new bezel assembly (if any). Other than leaving the lid / display panel assembly as one piece, you've pretty much got to take everything apart. Whilst the computer is apart, I would replace the keyboard for the relatively small additional parts cost. Most of the investment here will be in paying for engineer time (or in summoning up courage for a DIY repair).

A:None working keyboard, trackpad, and usb mouse

1) What happens if you uninstall the USB mouse and only have the touchpad online?
2) Also, are you using an external monitor plugged into the S/VGA port?  Reason for asking:  in the old days, if during a monitor swap, a certain monitor pin was accidentally bent and not making contact, the keyboard and mouse would not respond.  Wait, you said you can use mouse, keyboard, touchpad in BIOS?  Then, #2 doesn't apply to you.

Hi there,

Any help would be massively appreciated here as have really run out of ideas with this problem!

Unit: Macbook Pro mid 2010 model

All was working fine until one day, after using a projector in work, the unit was shutdown. When it came back on both the keyboard and the trackpad no longer function.

Key facts so far:

The keyboard responds just after power on, so that a command via the keys can occur i.e. press C to boot from disc or cmd S for single user mode etc BUT once the operating system has booted up, neither the keyboard or trackpad work.

If I plug in a USB mouse/keyboard all works fine. Also, if I use an external bluetooth keyboard and mouse all is fine.

The OS is completely up-to-date and runs on 10.6.8.

The keyboard backlight work fine.

Actions so far:

I have run both Disc Utility verify disc and also Disk Warrior - no difference.
I have repaired permissions within disc utility - no difference.
I have completely erased (zero pass) the hard drive and re-installed the operating system from the disc - problem still there.
I have tried Applejack also - no difference.
I have reset PRAM / NVRAM using usual method - no difference.
I have started in Safe Mode - problem still there i.e. cannot use keyboard or trackpad even in safe mode.

The only thing that has happened is that, when I booted into Single User Mode, the system went a little crazy and kept repeating the an error relating to AppleUSBMultitouchDriver 0xe000404f over and over. I was unable to do... Read more
