Windows 8 Not Going Into Sleep Mode When I Close The Lid

Q: Windows 8 Not Going Into Sleep Mode When I Close The Lid

Hey There,

I have checked on google and found nothing that was related to what i am looking for. I installed Windows 8 on my laptop as well. Although in my power settings my laptop is set that when I close the lid it is to go into "sleep" mode. I've uploaded a screen shot to show you how I have it set. The reason I would like to set it go into "sleep mode" when I clode the lid of my laptop, is because I am on the go a lot and it would be nice to have it in sleep mode instead of having to shut it down every time I want to go some where.

Thanks
RitualJman

Preferred Solution: Windows 8 Not Going Into Sleep Mode When I Close The Lid

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Although I have the settings set to go to sleep mode through Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does > On battery and plugged in: Sleep, my laptop does not go to sleep mode when I close the lid. When I close the laptop, the power button will stay lit and will not blink and the screen will stay off when I reopen the laptop. This forces me to hold down the power button until it turns off and then reboot the entire laptop back up. What do I need to change so this stops happening?

My Y50 Will not enter sleep mode when I close the lid but it will if go to sleep when it idles. I think there might be an issue the magnet sensor but I don't know where it is or how to check if it works. I've already checked too see if there was a problem in the settings when closing the lid but it's already set to sleep when it closes. I have tried pushing the lid down really tightly since it's a little bit loose but even when it's as far as it will go it still won't go to sleep mode.

I decided to run media center yesterday just to see what happened when it connects to an Xbox 360. I closed media center and then closed the lid of my laptop. My laptop was fully charged when I left it but when I came back it was completely blank, turns out it was still consuming power when it should have been in sleep mode.

This has never happened before so I assume that this is related to running media center and confirming my xbox as a device to communicate to. Does anyone know how I can undo this and fix the problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Laptop will no longer go into sleep mode when I close the lid

Hello Conker, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might double check in your Power Plan Options (STEP TWO here) to make sure that you have the Multimedia settings - When sharing media - set to Allow the computer to sleep.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Dear Forum

I have a new samsung ultrabook 5 series (NP530U3C-A01US) that is supposed to be fast in booting up and down using intels ssd cache. Unfortunately it does not stay in sleep mode but crashes instead (I do not think it is a BSOD, cant verify as the lid is closed). On opening the lid the laptop resumes from the main boot menu and windows announces that it has abnormally stopped and gives options of save boot. After normal reboot, the wireless card would not start properly, and everything is somewhat slow.
The failure is random, not every close lid will create the crash. I was not able to find the reason or the relationship that might cause it. I fear it is related to some custom samsung software installed (others refer to bloatware). Hope I can find help here.

I have reinstalled the factory image with the same result.
I have contacted Samsung help desk, with no useful help
I have re-installed the Intel drivers for centrino wifi module. My drivers for Graphics are up-to-date

I have used the SF diagnostic too and attached the result here. There is no dump file, although I have enabled it.

So I just bought and received a Lenovo Y700 15ISK - model 80NV. Everything works great, but I've noticed that when the laptop enters sleep mode, whether on its own or not, when I turn it back on, it goes through the start up process and any application I had open prior will be closed.  I did some digging around and came across this. I followed what it said and installed the audio driver and BIOS v35 (and subsequently, v52) but I'm still having the same problem. Any ideas on a solution? Thank you in advance! I think it might also be worth mentioning that beforehand, whenever I put the computer in sleep mode, it wouldn't resume and wake up until I had installed v35, so part of my problem's been fixed.

This is more of an intrigue than an issue but I'm still curious as to why this happens. Issue: When placing a T480s on top of another T480s both machines will be forced into sleep mode.  How to reproduce: Line up a T480s on top of another T480s (or T480) and the device will go into sleep mode. I've Stacked T480 units and this does not happen this seems to only affect the T480s line. (These test were preformed on the latest bios/driver revisions) What I think maybe happening is that the T480s when stacked are triggering the lid closed sensor of the other unit. Since this is not the case for the T480 units we have I think it may be because of the thickness of the s models. Is this something that will eventually be fixed via bios update? or is this just a flaw in the T480s design? Thanks for in advanced for your response!

A:T480s is forced into sleep mode when in close proximity to T480/T480s

I've seen this happen in the past, it was due to how strong the magnets are that keep the lid shut.

I have a the last version of the 17" MacBook Pro model with the following specs:

Windows 8 64-bit
Intel Core i7 2.40 GHz
16GB RAM

I have from what I can tell everything working perfectly fine with the exception of the laptop properly going to sleep when I close the lid. I installed the Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033 and also updated the AMD Radeon HD 6700M drivers to get the video card working properly.

When I close the lid... the machine will seemingly "sleep" but it will not wake. The screen stays black and I have to shut it off completely and back on. I miss being abel to just close the lid when I need to and then just pick up where I left off.

Anyone else have this issue with Windows 8? Searching the web shows no results - I assume someone else has had this issue. Thanks for any feedback or thoughts you may have.

A:Windows 8 will not sleep when I close my MacBook Pro lid..

Just to let you know, I have just updated my Macbook Pro to Windows 8.1 with latest bootcamp drivers and to my complete surprise the only issue I have is the built in graphics driver under-scanning my external HDMI monitor. I was looking around for the best Radeon Driver as the one I installed crashed start-up needed to be restored. Anyway I saw your thread so thought I would test to see if the Lid suspends & resumes the laptop. It does a perfect job. I went into suspend when I closed the lid after 2 seconds and resumed on lifting the lid in under 3 seconds. So least you know it works on a clean install....maybe you have a driver issue. Anyway hope that helps.....and can you share where you found the Radeon Driver. good luck.. Mark.

When you go to power options in the control panel for Windows 8, under power buttons and lid >> lid close action >> on battery/plugged in, you should be able to choose
a. Do nothing
b. Sleep
c. Hibernate
d. Shut down
However, sleep is not an option for me ever since I updated to Windows 8.1. Screenshot:

The update also screwed up a lot of stuff. Very annoying. The computer is an Asus Zenbook. Any suggestions?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

A:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

I just had the fan replaced, and now when I use F4 to put the laptop in sleep mode and then close the lid, it remains in sleep mode when I open the lid.  Same thing occurs when I close the lid (no F4) for sleep mode and then open the lid.  However, when I select Sleep on the Windows 7 Start Menu and close the lid, the laptop does resume when I open the lid. NOTES:- Before replacing the fan, I used F4 for sleep and resume, because when I close the lid I would sometimes find the fan running the next morning- BIOS is up-to-date- Keyboard and mouse are set to wake PC- Power Options Settings:   - Allow hybrid sleep set to OFF and Hibernate set to NEVER (As they always have been)   - USB Settings > Disabled USB selective suspend settings  (These were enabled) While this isn't a huge problem, I would like to have things working as before, preferably without having to go back to the Lenovo certified shop. Thank you in advance for your help. Jeff

Sony VAIO VPC series laptop w/ Core i7 Q740 w/4GB RAM working on for a client. Malwarebytes pulled up 26 infections, and I thought that was the solution to constant lag problems and lag when typing. Turned Norton features off, CHKDSK, adjusted desktop setting for Best Performance, ran in Safe Mode, no change. Even when typing in the password there is sometimes a lag. I've read numerous posts on this subject on this forum and throughout the web. Client has another laptop of this same exact model and it screams. CPU usage is very low when lag happens - 0 to 2%. Used Process Explorer and Svchost Viewer to investigate and rogue programs - everything looks legit. (I can post screenshots). I thought a svchost.exe file was running some higher than normal usage, but it was just handing more services, and even after I killed the process tree - still got lag. It is intermittent, but only with a few seconds at a time of performance.
Another tech buddy said there might be an issue with the hard drive as far as SATA issues, etc., or BIOS settings, and that some of the Sandy Bridge i7's had a SATA issue of some sort. I've tried most everything the average user might mention - I've put a few hours into this - I solve most issues without posting for help, but this is bugging me - there has to be a solution to this that doesn't involve a clean install - especially since the post at When Typing There Is a Delay shows that a clean install doesn't always solve these types of problem... my pc used to be fine before and could go into sleep mode (s1-s3) without any issues. Recently though I've noticed that it stays awake in Windows 8. Don't get me wrong, even now, sometimes it works fine, but on other occasions nothing happens.

I've tried a lot of stuff:-

registry hack to disable ipv6
switch off any computers that are on the network
using powercfg checked what devices were enabled and cancelled them all

What else can I do?

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. It goes into Sleep mode fine but anytime push a key to come back out of it.. it does nothing and has to be reset. Also it stops loading windows upon the first reset (the circles stop moving when says Loading Windows) then just stays on that screen which requires the reset button to be hit a second time.. finally moving past the loading circles to get to the desktop each time..

I downloaded the latest BIOS version which is a .cab file but trying to update it, says that the cab file cannot be read. Let me know if you need anymore information. Thanks for the help!

Now though my PC wont go into sleep mode all it does is breifly enter sleep mode then straight away comes back out of it, is there any thing that can be done to get around this problem.

From what I can gather there is no fix for this, but as there are some very knowledgeable people on this forum I thought I would ask.

Hi,
My Win7 PC has recently stopped powering off in sleep mode. I ran powercfg/energy in command prompt, which gave me a report with 6 errors which state:
"USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend"
, and one which says:
"Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled
PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer."

I have googled for answers as much as I can, but with my very low level IT experience, I've yet to fix the problem.

So far I've tried:
updating drivers for all USB devices in device manager (they were all apparently up to date)
checked powersave options

Can somebody suggest other things I should look into?
The main point is that to the best of my knowledge, I haven't installed anything new or changed any settings on my PC (I've been away for a month, but it was powering down fine the first few days on my return).
I'm wondering if some kind of software update could be the cause, but what I'm most worried about is if I've had some kind of a security breach during the course of trawling the internet (I'm using Bit Defender on auto pilot mode, nothing's been reported so far).

Hope someone can enlighten me. Thanks for your time.

I just witnessed something else - the PC DOES power down after 30mins of idleness, but then immediately powers up again (I can hear the fan whirring even though the pc and monitor appear to be in sleep mode).

I have two different WIN 7 computers here doing exactly the same thing. They go into sleep mode and frequently don't come out. Occasionally on my machine the OS has a message that says that the Video Driver had become unresponsive but it was successfully restarted, then it asks if I want to see if there is any answer for my trouble at MS central. I have never heard anything back from that.

My computer is built on an ASUS P5B deluxe with the bios recently updated. My wife's is build on an Intel motherboard and they both have the E8400 processor and they are not over clocked. Memory in one is 3Gbytes and 6Gbytes in the other. The common thing is that we both have NVIDIA 8500GT graphics cards. I have the most recent NVIDIA drivers which are dated November of this year - 195.62. The OS is Windows 7 64 bit and both machines were set up with a fresh install.

When I change the power settings for constant run the systems are stable. It's the sleep mode that is killing them. I rather would like to have the sleep mode working.

Hello. I have HP Pavillion laptop. I also have Vista. I have never had this issue before. But when I put my computer to sleep, i can wake it up but there will be nothing on the screen and I can't do anything. When I close the laptop and open it, it gives me the same issue. I set it to sleep when I close the laptop. I think it may be due to a recent file that I deleted. Every time I boot my pc I get this icon in my taskbar that says some start up programs have been blocked. In my case there was only one. I don't remember what it was called but I do know that it starts with the letter "g" and ends with a number. What can I do?

by the way when I said nothing on the screen, i meant that it would be blank. The screen would be black. It looks like my screen saver. My screensaver is blank. So it gave me a blank screen. Hello,

First of all - can anyone answer me on wich e-mail adress should I send all of my reports to Microsoft regarding Windows 7 problems that I encountered ?
Second, here is the problem wich was very annoying but I did solve it so my point is to warn Microsoft about this so they can fix it in future Windows update or Service Packs for Windows 7.
When you are using (for example I used "High Performance" Power Plan) and in advanced options of any of Power Plans you let option - "Hard disk - Turn off hard disk after" to be turned ON (for example if you make your hard disk turn off after 15 minutes) you will have some serious trouble.

This was happening:

In Windows Vista - all worked well. I would put my PC in sleep mode, get back for hour and just press power button on my PC and he went up pretty fast. That was great option and it was working just fine.

But in Windows 7, I found out trough days and days of testing that when I put my PC to "Sleep mode" if it's "Sleeping" more then 15 minutes - I just can't get it back to desktop from sleep!

I would press Power button, fans would start but then PC would just shut down and try to start itself again and again until i completely shut it down from power and re-started it again.
After some time I was very mystified by this problem and many of my colleagues and friends had similar or the same issue. One day we all discovered that if we set "Turn off hard disk" option to... Read more

I just upgraded my computer to a new mobo and CPU and for some reason sleep mode won't work. I can put the computer in sleep mode but it won't wake up. Everything turns on (Fans, hard drive, PSU) but no picture on the monitor. Also no BSOD error.
After typing in CMD and running as Admin then typing powercfg -a the results were this: The system firmware does not support this standby state.
Has anyone have a clue how to fix this cause everything is all up to date with a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit. Or does it mean Windows 7 don't like the new CPU? I don't have to use sleep mode but I rather use it if I can.
See picture below.
Besides this small problem the computer works great very fast.
I was told by AMD tech that this CPU can go up to 4.5GHz stable and he said everything is set right. I had the CPU core voltage set at 1.55V I ran AMD Overdrive for 4 hours with no errors at this setting( 4.41GHz @ 1.55V)

Hello dear friends,

There is a weird sound issue:
When I put my Pc on sleep mode and after wake-up the sound is gone and videos are lagging (1frame per 2 seconds). In device manager, it says all audio drivers are working properly, only restarting the PC fix the problem.

But I definitely need to use Sleep mode and that sound issue is really annoying.

Special thanks to helpers.

Hello Martin,

Have you tried to update the drivers for your Integrated Realtek Sound device?

I would have help you find them, but I do not see a manufacturer listed in your specs.

Hi,

I have the same problem with my newly installed copy of Win7 Pro. Disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse gets things working again for me and avoids a reboot, but I haven't found a permanent fix and would very much like one.

Hi all.
I have Power Options on my Desktop PC set to defaults..i.e Balanced is set to 10 minutes for display and 30 minutes for Sleep.
Yesterday I went to Windows Store to download the Windows 8.1 Update to update my Windows 8.
I clicked the download button and went to watch TV while it downloaded. After a while I noticed that my PC had gone to sleep. I pressed the sleep button on my keyboard to wake the PC up. I wasn't sure if the Windows 8.1 Update would just resume where it was before it went into Sleep mode or whether I would have to start the download again by going back into the Windows Store to download it again from the beginning. After waking my PC up I decided to just leave it at the desktop screen to see what happened. 3 hours later the message came up saying that the PC needed to be restarted to install the update. When I have downloaded the Windows Update in the past it usually takes 2 hrs and 15 mins but I noticed that Microsoft have changed the Windows 8.1 Update slightly since I last installed it so I wasn't sure if that accounted for the download taking longer than usual. Some of the Download options/screens are different on the latest version so the Windows 8.1 Update has definitely been altered slightly.

1. Will the download have continued from the point where it was before it went to sleep or will it have had to restart again from the beginning?
2. I was just slightly concerned that because my PC went to sleep during the Windows 8.1 Update (and it is such... Read more

No matter what I tried, I can't get my computer to stay in sleep mode. I have disabled what devices wake my computer, but oddly, its like it dose not save the option.

I want to have my keyboard only awake my computer from sleep mode, however, I have uncheck the option to allow my mouse to wake the device but nothing seems to work.

What can I do?

A:Windows 7 won't stay in sleep mode.

Check the CMOS/BIOS Setup to see if there is anything in there such as "Wake on LAN" etc., that also will need to be disabled.

My computer lately runs really slow on a sporadic basis so I tried doing a registry cleaning and optimization with WinThruster. While it didn't fix my computer's slowness, I've had a new annoying problem pop up.

Every time it goes into sleep mode and I try to access it through logging in, my computer doesn't go straight back to Windows 10 and instead it just loops back into the login screen. It does this even if I input my password or if I just press enter without inputting anything at all. I would have to restart my computer everytime in order to login properly which is annoying. Occasionally I also have the same problem when just turning my computer on, so I'd have to restart. I'd like to be able to properly login from sleep mode again.

A:Can't access Windows 10 from sleep mode

OK, I thought it was just me, but since the AU when I put my machine in 'Sleep', and then later try to revive it, it doesn't come out of sleep and I have to do a hard shut-off, from which it doesn't always completely boot-up, but occasionally hangs, so that I have to do the 'F9' Restore to get it to actually boot into Windows . . .
As a temporary fix I am just not using 'Sleep' for right now . . .
-Anyone else?

Since my upgrade to Windows 8 Pro from Windows 7, I can't access either the sleep or hibernate feature of my laptop. Whenever I try to go to 'sleep' or 'hibernate', the laptop shuts down after which I have to start it all over again. I did not face this problem with Windows 8 Consumer Review.

Anyone aware with the solution, please help.

Hello, This seems to be a pretty common problem but I cant seem to find a solution to my case.

Basically when I tell my PC to go to sleep, it seems like its going to actually go to sleep but then my monitor will shut off and then my Tower will shut off and almost instantly turn right back on... like something is preventing it from going to sleep...

any Ideas on what might be causing this problem?

Thanks

A couple of weeks ago I turned off having Windows to automatically install updates. I did that because there was an update that would not install. Every time I restarted my computer after a few minutes I would get a notice to shut down. I think it was an update about my graphics card.
So For a couple of days my computer has shut itself down while in sleep mode. It evidently takes quite a while for this to happen because often I put it to sleep during the day and it doesn't happen then. My setting is to never put the computer to sleep but to turn off the display in 30 minutes. It's been that way for years with no problem until now. I would appreciate any help and thank you.
