T450s slow on external monitor

Q: T450s slow on external monitor

Hi people, So, I really tried to solve this on my own, but currently I'm unable to. I got a new T450s with 128GB SSD (20BW series) on november-2016 and I've never been quite satisfied with its performance when I'm using an external monitor extended. My monitor is a Samsung 22" LED FHD panel that I can use on either RGB or HDMI. This machine has an Intel 5500 graphics card. I received this unit with Windows 7, and it was constantly lagging (even without monitor attached) with all the bloatware that Lenovo packed with it. Well, I've rebuilt the PC from scratch using a fresh Windows 10 media, and at least now when using it standalone, it runs very well. However, the performance when using my external monitor never really improved. Here's what I already did: 1) upgraded all drivers and firmwares to the latest level we have on Lenovo2) Changed the power scheme to High Performance3) Tested generic drivers from Intel4) Monitored my CPU with cpu-z to check if it was being capped - it wasn't.5) Tried using RGB or HDMI - no change6) Disabled the power savings settings on each of the USB and display devices on device manager.7) Increased the video memory on the BIOS to 512mb8) disabled intel AMT on the bios9) tested using mains or the battery10) Disabled the v-sync settings on the intel graphics card (only available when on battery) What I've noticed is that, specially when using chrome with some heavy websites, the laptop tends to lag more. I've tried to use firefox, it lags less, but still it does, specially when opening new tabs, processing new sites, switching tabs, etc. I've noticed that these lags are almost always related to CPU spikes (reaching close to 50% or so). So, Is this a weak laptop? Should I use a smaller screen? No screen at all? i'd like to hear what you are doing with your T450s out there to know If I'm crazy or not.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I know this is a common problem, but so far I did not find a solution to it.  The external monitors connected to my prodock via VGA and DVI blacks out every few seconds, especially during heavy usage. At first, I thought it was a power supply issue so I bought a 90W supply. Now the monitors stays on most of the time, but still blacks out every 10 minutes or so, even during standby with minimal power usage. Then I tried editing the integrated graphics settings, updating/rolling back graphics driver, flashing the docking station firmware with every version I can find, and switching to ubuntu on the other drive, but there wasn't a single combination of settings which would keep the external monitor on for more than an hour without blacking out/disconnecting.  So what should I do now?  System info:i7 5600u, 12G RAM, 16G + 128G ssd, 500G hdd, NO 940M, FHD IPS nontouch screen, Windows 10/Ubuntu 16.04Thinkpad Prodock 04A1, 45W/90W power supply. All USB and audio ports works perfectly. Both monitors are 1440x900 at 60Hz, works flawlessly when attached to laptop VGA port.

Hello, I recently bought the Ultra Dock 90 for my T450s.  I have one external monitor currently connected through the dock.  When I push the power button on the docking station (laptop lid closed) to turn on the computer, the computer turns on, but the external monitor does not engage.  When I lift the laptop lid, there is no image on the laptop screen either.  The laptop is on, but does not respond to any key stokes on the actual laptop.  I then have to do a hard reboot using the power button on the laptop. If I initially power the laptop by lifting the lid and hitting the laptop power button, the compter boots and my external screen works.  I can then close the laptop lid and everything is fine. I know the power button on the dock should power the computer and external monitor on.  I am guessing there is a simple solution to resolve this, but I am not a computer person and need help. One thing to note - when I lift the lid after trying to power the laptop through the dock, I see that the Function Green Light is illuminated.  Not sure if this information is helpful in determining the problem. Please help! Peterrabbit33

Hi everyone, A while ago I had trouble with my LCD. It would go black (at first only when I touched the bezel at the lower part, later it also turns black at random). Only sleep mode or newstart would solve this. I opened the notebook to check the cables. at some point the screen stayed black.A replacement screen + replacement cable does not solve it. But at startup the new screen lights up for a short moment, then is stays dark. I never got the old screen to work. Update: I got the new screen to work after fixing the screws and touchting the connector by accident, but it is very fragile. by touching either the lower part with the connections of the screws or any of the screws it flickers, shows stripes, (black and white or random colors) and sometimes goes back to full working screen. right now, after restart, one half of the screen works. the other half has stripes in different colors.  What could be wrong. Please help! Any idea what I could do? Nay help is very appreciated! Thanks a lot

Bought a Pavilion, and for what I need it to do, it is working just fine. However, when I attach an external monitor to it - the response on that monitor only is dreadfully slow. Windows on the laptop screen are just fine. What can I do to improve the response on the external monitor? Once that is fixed, I hope to have a 2nd external monitor in place too. Ideas?

Whenever I connect external monitor or TV via HDMI the computer is slow/lagging (even moving windows or doing a right click is slow).I tried to isolate the problem and it seems to happen only when I use "Second screen only" or when the laptop lid is closes, if the lid is open and I use "Extend" or "Duplicate" everything's fine. Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

I think of replacing my mbpr 15" with a T450s with Docking station. The macbook, despite being brand new and very expensive  gives me all kind of glitches in windows 7 like overheating, bluescreens when waking from standby, broken graphics support with the nvidia and 4K monitors, very long boot time, bad battery life, etc. So my bad luck with nvidia makes me feel wanting to go back to Intel Graphics. My Cad software supplier also recently revised his opinion on Intel Graphics, saying that the current chips and drivers work pretty well with Rhino. Also i realized that a quadcore which is constantly overheating and throttling under load isn't really better than a dualcore which has better turbo. And i miss the trackpoint and stiff keyboard pretty hard. As i don't want to dive into the next adventure, i want to make sure that a t450s can suit my needs. I have a brand new Dell P2715Q 4K Monitor and a docking station would be a nice addition. Can this work at 60hz (sst)  over the Docking station?Which dock do i need then, the onelink, basic, Pro or the Ultra?

A:Can the t450s drive a 4K60hz Monitor over the Dock...

it looks like t450s supports [email protected] only via mst, no sst support. This I think is limitation of the 5500 GPU.

Hi,Background on Issue I've had the Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd gen (product # 20JDCTO1WW; BIOS version N1NET46W 1.33) since it came out. It's running the latest build (non-targeted channel) of Windows 10 Pro with all Windows updates and all Lenovo System updates installed (through Lenovo Vantage app), as of this writing. The laptop has only professional/scientific software installed and it's strictly used in a work setting in a climate-controlled office (i.e. no exposure to extreme heat/cold, humidity, dust, etc.) (scientific/professional software like statistic analysis software, Office, browsing company websites and other non-entertainment professional sites, etc.) and there have been no system registry modifications, no 3rd party driver installation, or anything outside of the normal functioning of the system. Windows has never been re-installed/reset from the factory-shipped condition, and I haven't even accessed the BIOS for the first time since it was purchased. There's > 250GB free from the 1 TB SSD, and RAM utilization never reaches > 50% even on the heaviest of workloads. IssueUp to Win 10 OS build 1607 back in 2016-2017, everything was running well. Hello everyone,

I am having some trouble with my Tecra M11 with an external monitor going through a Express Port Replicator II.

It is very specific, but i am running texlive 2010 on my laptop for writing a thesis. Whenever i use my laptop screen the functionality is fine, and it runs very quickly, with no lag when i compile my document. Upon docking it into my docking station at work to use on a large monitor, whenever i use the same program, it slows up a lot, eventually causing the program to crash. Its frustrating to lose lots of your thesis like this! When i connect the external screen straight to the laptop, it works fine again.

Something is going wrong in the docking station. Does anyone know how i can correct this? Im a little confused, and out of ideas. maybe i driver or something im not aware of. Maybe my docking station is defective?

Thanks

Jake

A:Tecra M11-LaTeX runs slow on external monitor using Express Port Replicator

Which port do you use on port replicator? VGA or DVI?

It will not be easy to offer answer to your question. It is not possible to test all available software with docking station and search for solutions.
I would say: bad luck.

I'm using an external monitor that scales at 100% (1440p 32"). The internal monitor is 4K, so scales at 250%. In a day I might need to plug and unplug the external monitor (from HDMI port) several times, and after a few times, it seems to struggle with switching between the scaling of external and internal monitors. On Chrome, for example, scrolling sometimes is noticeably lagging, and new pages will flash multiple times as they are loading. Moving Chrome over to the internal monitor (with 250% scaling) and everything seems to work fine. Restarting Chrome doesn't change the issue. A whole reboot is necessary.
I would guess it's a driver issue. I also have light screen flickering, though I only notice it when not using the external monitor.

Over the last few months I've had around 7 different occurances of a monitor not displaying anything while powered on and hooked up. This has happened with multiple makes and models of monitors and also laptops, even the connections are different in some cases whether it be VGA, VGA to Mini display, HDMI, or HDMI to Mini display. The only similarity of all the occurances is 2 monitors were used while this happened. Each time I've replaced all the adapters and cords to see if that would fix it. The only thing that seems to fix it, is to switch the monitor out with another one. This happened after the founders update for Windows. All PC's are using Windows 10 64 bit. Any help would be appriciated on this!

Hello guys, I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T450s couple of days ago. And the laptop works fine, well most of the time...The specs are:Intel i7 5600U12GB Ram512GB SSD1920x1080 The problem is that after a while the laptop starts becoming REALLY slow! And it's like the fan "died' all of the sudden. For instance, let say that I play a game on Steam (Rocket League), the game works really good and I can hear the fan spin (which is normal when playing game etc), but after I close the game, and do other stuff, i can see that the laptop is really slow...Is the task manager everything seems normal, nothing is 100%, the CPU, disk etc is usually under 15%.But just to verify it, I try to open rocket league again, and I can play the game but now it's all laggy and barely playable. Also the fan doesn't spin anymore. It's just dead silent. It also happens when I don't play any games. When I reboot the laptop again, everything works again.Do you guys know what the problem might be? Do you want me to upload anything, or download some software to get more information?P.S I also opened the backlid to see if there was any dust in the fan that might cause this, but no, it's clean.

Hello,

I got a T450s, brand new and everytime I am not plugged in (it's a laptop after all) the computer litteraly slows down to a point where it is unusable, a simple key (space, a letter, a number) will usually take 3-5 second and sometimes up to 20 seconds to register, no software is usable, CAD, video playback and authoring, completely useless when on battery. The thing is this is a laptop, I WILL use it on battery. That is despite me choosing high performance in the Lenovo power manager.

Anyway I can fix this?

When moving the cursor with the trackpad, i've noticed that slow movement will usually result in a jump of cursor of a number of pixels (around 40pixels/8-10mm cursor movement)a search online is mostly useless apart from an arch linux forum where atleast 4 others are also reporting the same issue with jumping with slow finger movement. I've noticed this problem on both linux (Fedora22) and windows OS (win10, via inplace upgrade from lenovo win8.1 factory image), so it's not OS specific - definately a hardware/firmware issue. aside from a warranty claim (which i'm doubtful would actually fix the issue), what else could it be - anyone else experiencing the issue?

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

The window of Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 when dragged and snapped to the corner of the external monitor turns black but only sometimes. This rendering problem appears to be a driver problem according to Microsoft.

This needs to be addressed by Dell/Intel or NVIDIA as there appear to be many complaints.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am talking about Windows 10. And this is what I see:

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

This may seem like a silly question, have you tried the HD on another PC to see if the issue is with that?
Also, are you saying it's not showing up in 'My Computer', or are you not getting the option to open files?

A:Asus monitor not working as external monitor for notebook

See if this helps:

Extending the desktop to the attached monitor with Microsoft Windows Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
In the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings tab.
Click the Display list and select your external monitor.
Note: For help identifying the monitors, click Identify.
Select Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor, then click Apply or OK.

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Hi NATURAL1DAVE,
What is the exact system model?
Have you connected the external monitor to a dock or hub or directly to the system USB port?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
Reinstall the video drivers and chipset drivers for the system from the above link and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hi, few days ago screen on my notebook Probook 6560b  with discreete GPU 6470M went black.  Monitor does not have any backlight and also there is no picture on it (looking at angle...so it is not faulty backlight). Pulled all devices out (HDD, CD-ROM) but monitor still remains blank (no BIOS screen). On external output (VGA or DP) there is pictrure, but it can not load any Windows (I have dualboot Windows 10 and WindowsXP). In Windows 10 shows error: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE What failed: atikmpag.sys. In Windows XP, also blue screen with error in atikmpag.sys. So, I booted in SafeMode and remove Radeon HR6470M driver and put Standard VGA driver. Now PC boots to OS, but still only on external monitor. Tried to reinstall drivers, but it always fails with blank screen and PC freeze. With some many tries and restarts, in one moment notebook monitor starts to working again. But only up to next Windows restart.I tried to put new HDD in it and install fresh Windows...but same thing. Booted from live linux distro...only external monitor works. So, as I can see, external monitors on VGA or DP can work but only with generic VGA drivers. OS correctly recognize graphic card, but when driver is installed external monitor also goes blank and windows freezes (not responding on caps/num lock, no longer pingable on network). As in one moment internal monitor went back online it seams that maybe is some bad connections...but where...GPU or video memory? Also tried HP diagnostic... The laptop our family shares recently had its monitor broken. It displays half of the screen, but will not stop shaking. I have it hooked up to an external monitor, but I am unable to use it to display the laptop screen without changing the display settings via the laptop. Is there some command I can use to set the external monitor to display the laptop screen? Or do I need to replace the laptop screen?

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

Hi, I have an old laptop that I have installed Puppy Linux on, it works fine except that my monitor doesn't work. So I plug in an external one, but its a bad setup because the laptop needs to be open. I was wondering if I could take the monitor off the laptop. Would the computer still work? The model is an old Toshiba 1100.
Thanks

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi nomonitor, and welcome to TSG

Check your user manual for the laptop to see if has has a special key or a Function key that lets you toggle between the internal display and external monitor.

How do I enable the external monitor port on the T60? Fn+F7 does not work.

A:External monitor on T60

Source Lenovo Support - Troubleshooting video display issues - ThinkPad

See the External monitor (Flat-Panel and CRT) troubleshooting solutions guide for more information.
Note: Using a resolution lower than the native resolution on flat panel monitors will cause distortion, loss of detail, and general blurriness.
See the Enabling TV-Out guide for using a TV or projector with the S-Video connection if available.
Connect a known good external monitor and press the Fn and F7 keys simultaneously to change the display mode.
Notes:The Presentation Director menu window may interfere with the functionality of the Fn and F7 keystroke.
There are generally three display mode settings to toggle through (LCD, CRT, and both).
Some ThinkPad models only support two display modes. CRT only or LCD only.

Verify the cabling and connections between the external CRT monitor and the ThinkPad system external monitor port.

Remove any signal cable extensions and switch boxes.
Note: Signal cable extensions and switch boxes are not supported.
Ensure the external display is setup and configured according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Verify the external display passes any applicable self tests according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Verify the display settings are supported by the ThinkPad video chipset and the external display.

I have an old all in one Hitachi Vision Desk 2600 series computer with Win2000Pro OS.

New tower computer uses a 21" external LCD monitor.

Have no trouble attaching old computer to new monitor as the Hitachi has an external VGA port, but both monitors are then on.

The Bios has only two display choices:
1. Auto - This makes both monitors work
2. Inboard - This makes only the small monitor work even though external is attached.

I want to turn off small monitor permanently and use only the large one. Is there any way to do this without opening the case and detaching the monitor (if this is even possible)?

Thanks
