Unexpected DVD-RW failure

Q: Unexpected DVD-RW failure

Hi people, first of all - My name is Victor, and i am from Bulgaria.
Seems that your forum is the place i always find my answers , and therefore it was the first and only place i decided to post in my problem.
In advance i gotta say I did read all the topics i could find related to my issue, but none of them is appliable to me. And here it is:

I am using a Core 2 Duo E6750 , overclocked a bit, with a MSI P965 Neo 2 motherboard with the latest drivers from the MSI LIVE UPDATE feature. Everything on my system is running just fine : I can boot Vista from my DVD-RW (TSST Corp SH-S182D, guess its a Samsung IDE drive) , and this drive acts totally normal under vista. No problems using it at all. And here it comes :
I have never been a real fan of Microsoft, but i need to use it as the adobe products are not suitable to linux (buggy using wine), but on the other hand i can not affor a Mac. So i tried linux and it worked fine on this PC.
Each and every linux (Ubuntu) installation i have done ran completely flawess , with no problems , and all i ever had to do was pressing "next" until the installation is over.
So the last time i went mad about linux and deleted it (i've done this many times on this machine) everything was fine - i fixed the boot and Vista was able to boot again at stratup. I left the 15 gb partition that i used for linux as unallocated space as i just knew i would wanna reinstall open-source again soon. And until that moment i am trying to install ANY version of linux (any distro i mean) without any success. All the time i get strange errors, and i am pretty sure its my DVD writer that causes the issue. I get the "MSCD001 device: driver not found, aborting installation" and linux CD strats searching some USB drivers, second hard drives etc.
I set my BIOS to defaults - nothing happens. i switched the boot sequence to HDD, then DVD as second, and then switched them back again, so the DVD drive can be bootable - again nothing.
I downloaded the latest drivers for this DVD drive and they were installed successfuly - again nothing after that.
Each and every version of linux (not just Ubuntu) i have tryed gives this error and the installation stops.
Could you guys, any of you, give me hand with this one?
I really dont know what to do???
Thanks in advane, and greetings from Bulgaria

Preferred Solution: Unexpected DVD-RW failure

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just installed Dell Data Safe 2.0 to make recovery disc which I was able to do sucessfully , but now at startup getting errors in event viewer VDS unexpected failure code [email protected] The only reason I installed was because thats how Dell told me to create recovery discs for future problems, but I think it caused a issue with vds. I would just uninstall but not sure if will cause problems with recovery discs and also I believe it installed so kind of driver or something because I noticed a message during install about customizing partion. I wish I had not even installed now but I like to have a set of rec. discs for all my pc! I also have Daemon Tools and I know this program can cause this error but it has been installed for a month with no errors so I would like to remove Dell Data Safe correctly but can I still use rec discs in future or should I just ignore error? Thanks for any help!Dell insured me this would cause no issues yeah right!

I just recently re-installed win 7 on my computer and had no problems up until about a week ago and now I get BSOD periodically. They usually happedn when I'm watching video, but ,again, sometimes when I'm just doing basic tasks. I have attached the dump files per thread. Next time it happens I will also put up the error codes that I receive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basic info:
win 7 32 bit professional, retail version
originally vista machine
about a 4 year old hp machine with a fresh (about 2 weeks old) installation.

Again thanks for any help in advance.

A:BSOD- unexpected hardware failure

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP.
Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

You can read more on this error and what to try here...

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.

Can someone please take a look at the attached and offer a suggestion (besides hemlock or a BFH (big frigging hammer).

Last crash dump included is from August of last year. I suspect a bad power adapter or battery.

In any case, you should update from Realtek's site:

I'm running a Medion M3 Composer 5300. I've had it for about 4-5 years, so I know it's getting old.

I've had these issues for the past couple of week and it seems to be increasing in frequency.

1) While working on my computer, my monitor will suddenly go to power-saving mode and shut off, as if I have turned my system off, but the tower stays on, and the Fan revs faster and faster.

2) When updating or doing an install that requires a restart, the computer resets, but the monitor shuts down and the tower stays on as described above.

3) Sometimes, upon starting the tower, there is a loud beep, and the monitor does not turn on, but the tower runs as described above.

The monitor cant be turned back on, but the system basically keeps going and the fans run continuously. I have to turn off the power switch on the back of the tower. I think I have an issue with faulty or failing hardware, and I was wondering how I can check the functionality of my components to see if there are any problems. Are there any programs or things built into windows XP that can find these issues?

A:Solved: Unexpected System Shutdown/Failure to properly Boot

No i don't think there is such a program, but there is a lot of software which will scan your PC for mistakes and those might be able to find your problem. I know that Registry Easy 4.7 is free to download and scan..if you get a lot of problems, try reinstalling windows.

I have an older Dell Inspiron. I think I bought it in 2008. It had Windows Vista originally and I upgraded to Windows 7 in 2013.
Recently, when I click to shut down, it will go to a blue DOS looking screen and then reboot. A message will pop up saying something like "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown." It's a pain because I have to wait until it finishes rebooting and then shut it down again.

To clarify, it doesn't do this every time; maybe once out of every 10 or 12 shutdowns. Usually it shuts down normal. It seems to do the "unexpected shutdown" reboot thing when I'm in a hurry.

Any help is appreciated.

First of all, I thank you for your attention.

I cannot perform any "Windows update" issue since the 23/08/2016.

Each time I reach the "Windows Update" screen, I get the following error message :

In french : "Redémarrer l'ordinateur pour installer d'importantes mises à jour"

In english: "Restart the computer to install importante updates"

Then, after rebooting, nothing change.

After further investigations, I get the following error message:

In French : "windows update ne peut pas actuellement rechercher des mises à jour car vous devez tout d'abord redémarrer votre ordinateur afin de terminer l'installation précédente."

In English : "windows update cannot research update because you must first restart your computer in order to finish the previous installation".

Then, I've recreated a new catalog by executing these commands:

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftDist.old

net start wuauserv

Now all services are running but I still cannot perform updates.

I've been browsing the site and the internet for a sollution to my problem, but can't seem te find it. There are similar postings, but they're always just a little different. So that's why i posted the new thread.

Since a couple of days i've been experiencing troubles shutting down my PC and using my USB ports. It started when i tried to log onto my work from home. It failed and the IT guy from work told me to reinstall citrix reciever. So I did and I was able to work from home. After finishing and logging out (to get back to my own PC) I found that my USB portst didn't work anymore. I tried rebooting, but af 10 minutes of "shutting down" I got a blue screen: Driver Power State Failure with code 1000009f.

I did the following:
- tried system restore - it failed with different time stamps
- update drivers - they were all up to date the system said
- Malware Bytes, CC Cleaner, MS Essentials, Hitman pro - Did them all, had some minor stuff, fixed that, problem remained.
- SFC/scannow - no problems
- Memory check - no problems

As it is now, the only update I have left is the update to WIN10. However it has tried and failed during a few of the reboots, so that doesn't seem to be and option.

After try all different kinds of things from a lot of posts I decided to refresh my windows install. Did a lot of updating and still the problem remains. Although I now found out that USB devices that are plugged in upon startup work. Once I unplug en replug them, t... Read more

My Windows 7 machine fails to properly request a dhcp address but works with a static address.   Looking at the error logs I see the error message.
The Network Location Awareness service terminated with service-specific error %%-1073741288.
This problem started with a failure of the DHCP service to start but I fixed that by fixed by changing permission in the registry as outlined in this post -

Based on what I found online I tried the fixes below - none have restored the Network Location Service.

Restored to a previous good statechkdsk sfc /scannow
netsh winsock reset ; netsh in ip reset ; reboot virus scanovernight memtest
The hardware/network seem fine - this machine is dual boot with Ubuntu which runs fine.
Any suggestions ?

Hello All Computer hardware wizards,
My Dell Notebook a Vostro 1500, 1.6Ghz 4G Ram, 250GB Hardrive and OS: Vista Home Edition, suddenly acted up yesterday.
1) At first my screen displayed random horizontal color lines (sort of blinking randomly). When that did not change after a few minutes, I 'hard' powered off the Laptop.
2) When I pushed power on, it dispalyed the LED's for Num Lock, Cap Lock and Scroll Lock. The Cap Lock LED was blinking and the Num Lock, Scroll LocK LED's remained continously on. SCREEN was completely black.....no display!
3) After about 30 seconds all 3 LED's shut off and computer went dead.

I repeated this several times. Took battery off, tried unplugging from 110V power etc. Still does the same as described in paragraph 3.

A:Screen Failure & Startup power failure. After 30 seconds laptop powers off

That doesn't sound too healthy!

How old is the laptop? If it is under warranty I would get it checked that way.

My initial thought, although not a certainty, would be a problem with the graphics card itself from your description.

HI Techies,

This is my first post here. I am doing my first MOBO build and am having some issues. Here are my specs:

PC Chips A13G+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ 2.0GhZ
200 GB SATA Hard drive
80 GB SATA Hard drive

Now when I first turned on the computer I got the following error. I have seen posts with this error before and I tried some of the things but they didn't work for me. The only thing I didn't try is replacing the Lithium battery, which I will do tomorrow. But in the mean time the error I got was the following:

PXE - E61: Media Test Failure, check cable

Now here is what I have tried so far:

- Reset CMOS (by placing the jumper in the CLR_CMOS mode for about 30 secs)
- Unplugged Video card, HDD cables
- Switched RAM around
- tried booting a Win XP cd
- taking out the lithium battery and placing it in again.

I would appreciate any help from you guys.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from your optical drive first.

Or you have a SATA hard drive and controller and are trying to boot from an unpartitioned drive on a controller that you haven't provided a driver for.

These are not errors as such - MS says they are the result of miscoding the files in a couple of updates as being static rather than variable.
You can either leave them alone, or uninstall the updates concerned - KB3022345 and KB3068708

As far as your WU problems are concerned, we need at least the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.Persist.log files, together with the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file.

Trying to fix my dad's PC that has been on the the decline for a few weeks. He had a tech dude look at it for a few hrs one night, couldn't fix it and said it was a virus or malware. I got a hold of it and have run a few bootable AV's to no avail ie. kaspersky, AVG, Hitman Pro.
The oldest issue I could find was the failure to update the .net framework 4.5.1 update for maybe 3 months. this had been tried multiple times.
I'm unsure what the cause is, any help would be appreciated, some of the symptoms that I can think of are;
Internet browser failure - Internet explorer will only get to a white screen then shut down and sometimes take the PC with it. Chrome (before I removed it) was loading, but giving the 'aww Snap' blue screen.
Windows Update is failing, mainly on the .net framework update - I tried resetting update with the same results.
User Account control is not functioning correctly - tried to create a new administrator account in case of corrupt user but the button to create new account is not responding.
There are some other issues but I think they mainly tie back to these primary failures. As a result of these failures I haven't been ab;e to get any solid programs installed to do any good. All installations come up with different faults, either "error 1719", or "invalid picture" or "windows installer not installed correctly".

I have a slightly more than one year old T460 that worked great until last week when it just wouldn't start at all. A complete brick. The warranty repair guy came over and replaced the system board but the computer still will not start. He was saying that there may be a problem with the internal battery. The internal battery is warranted for one year and we are out of the warranty period. Besides the fact that 14 months seems like a kind of short time for the battery to completely fail, I was wondering if I should expect a complete system failure when the battery fails. I have replaced many notebook batteries in the past and I was always able to run the computer on AC power until I was able to replace the battery. Is that not the case with the internal battery on the T460? Sure, I can replace the battery but I don't want to order a $50 part and wait a week for it to be delivered only to find out that the battery is not really the problem. Both the internal and external batteries showed OK status the day before the machine went into brick mode. I this expected behavior? Can anyone comment on this?

Hey, I got some BSOD problems. Do you got time & experience to help me?

I got Windows 8 at the moment, I will install 8.1 shortly. Had 8.1 before i re-installed OS when the first BSOD showed up, so I doubt that 8.1 will fix things completely.

My problems ATM!

- Driver Power State Failure
- Video TDR Failiure (nvlddmkm.sys)
- Screen freezes at start up or when I get to the desktop
- Have to Disable my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M to use the CPU (Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).

Got two other kinds of BSOD before I re-installed windows but don't remember what they said, I just felt like "Hey I need to re-install my OS anyways so w/e". But apparently that didn't solve the problems.

I also gained "NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 340.52 stopped working While playing CS:GO" but that was before I re-installed windows. And now to use my CPU I need to go into Device Manager and shutdown my NVIDIA card to be able to use the CPU and use the Intel card instead. If I don't shut it down my CPU will freeze the screen for days, til I restart or I get a BSOD.

I will buy a can of air and open up my laptop and blow some dust away, perhaps that could help? Perhaps the NVIDIA card is burned/broken and I have to buy a new PC?

I've tried a few different driver for my NVIDIA card also, nothing works.

I'm no computer expert and thats why I'm here begging for help, so if someone could help me out here I would appreci... Read more

Hi - I have a small program called Voicemail Recorder which will not work using Windows Vista sp2 - Outlook Express v6.

The program functions correctly - loading, recording but when I click on send it either freezes or tries to send but delivers a message "sending mail failure! General MAPI failure [2]"

Can anyone understand the problem and knows how to fix it. If anyone can help I would be grateful if your instructions to a solution is very simple to suit my limited knowledge.

Many thanks.

It may be worth running the program in compatability mode and seeing if this stabilises your problem.

Compatibility Mode

It is a starting point at the very least.

Hi Guys,

First post here. I'm very discouraged with my new pc. I just built my first rig from scratch and have been having lots of problems ever since a recent thunderstorm. I made the most idiotic mistake of all time and forgot to plug the PSU AC supply into the surge protector and had it right in the wall. When I came home the day of the storm I noticed the PC was in a strange reboot loop. It would try to power on, the fans and lights would activate for a few seconds and then it would power down. I was very concerned by this but managed to quit the loop by turning off the power supply completely.

The computer worked as normal for 2-3 days but then i started noticing it would hang at odd times when the cpu should not have been under particular stress. Eventually, by the next day the bootups were failing and trying to run startup repair unsuccessfully. I also got messages that files were corrupted. I was unable to boot up in start mode or run a system restore.

I then proceeded to use a Ubuntu Linux Live disk and was able to get to my files and back everything up. After this, I ran a clean install of the OS.

A day or two went by and I noticed similar problems, system instability eventually devolving into boot failures/startup repair failures etc. I gave up at this point and resigned myself to the thought that some part of the hardware itself had been damaged by a power surge and I needed to replace it. I took it in to my nearby Canada Computers who ran a diagnostic and ... Read more

A:Bootup Failure/Repair Failure/Corrupted Files

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

What I think it might have damage the PSU. The low voltage to the Motherboard and other devices might be causing the crashing and freezing. See if you can get a spare PSU replaced it and test it and see if it works. If it works then we know. Honestly i think it hardware.

Good Luck,

My computer has been recently crashing alot, it kept saying the message about Bios or something close to that, I was quite sure, since the bios message kept changing over and over. I had thought that my hard drive had fail on me, so i went out to buy a new hardrive and reformatted everything, but then it happen again, at first i came to the conclusion it was my hardrive again, but when i tried take a different hardrive with another Os, it turn out to be the computer. Also when i took the new hardrive that had been reformatted, try to put it as a secondary slave on another computer, it would not boot up at all. So both my computer and my hardrive wont load at all, a bios message keeps appearing up. What can i do to fix this problem? I dont have a slight clue what to do first, i called up a friend who knew some computer, he told to reset the bios, listening to instruction I still i have some trouble on what to do.Product keyBWP4F-WDGT4-8RR2R-QTP4W-KXT6G

The other day I was workigna t ym computer, when it started to show tell tale signs of HDD failure, and then would not boot, could hear thrashing and clicking etc when trying to read it.

I was pretty annoyed about that but I thought oh well its all backed up just need a new HDD.

So got a new one ordered all specs reccommended by the computer manufacturer, installed by a preofessional too.

*** was going well, new OS flying along nicely so I went to my external HDD to transfer some data. Uppon trying to open my 1.5tb external HDD I realise windows cannot read it, although it is shown in "device manager" as a usb sotrage device. My other lapotop wont read it, nor a mac, nor linux even with force boot command.

I then go to my emergency backup 320gb hard drive with a small fraction of my important stuff on it. this 320gb hard drive WAS readable when I installed my new HDD with OS on it, but I went to the 1.5tb first as it had more on. But now even the 320 GB hard drive cannot be read, by a selection of computers.

I then plugged by 8GB Nokia N95 in and now it cannot even be read.

Complete disaster.

I have tried chkdsk, macs reading all drives, linux force boot commands.

I am quite scared that my new 500gb OS hard drive will fail soon too but I dont know what is causing this please any help much appreciated.

A:Hard Drive failure + External HDD Failure Similtaneously

What OS?
Look in Event Viewer/System for any red marks that may provide clues.
I understand the initial drive failure. but the subsequent failures suggest a major problem with the computer itself. Power supply, memory IDE controller, motherboard?
A virus could do this. There may be some rogue file on the external drive.

My mom's PC didnt want to start up earlier today, so i looked up what may have caused it, and i came across a page that said that a boot failure along with beeping (which it was doing) could be the RAM, and just re-set it, so i did and it booted fine, it got to the desktop and shutdown and said the /system32/config file was missing or corrupt, i attempted to do a standard PC recovery and i got:

\minint\system32\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. Error Code 18

Im looking around online now on what to do, my mom really doesnt want to have to format her entire PC, so if there is a way to fix this without having to do so, would be great...if its the only option, ill do the format.

Hey guys and gals. I was trying to backup some files (yet another issue). My external hard drive enclosure appears to be malfunctioning. Or it could be the SATA drive itself. You see when I try to turn it on the computer can't read it. Perhaps it was a power surge or something IDK. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations?

Tomorrow I'll try to take the computer apart and test the drive itself; I have a limited number of SATA interfaces on my motherboard and one of them is connected to the OS HD. I hope it is o.k., there are some recent backups I don't want to lose. Would be a pain to ask for those last few documents at work and rescan them. Guess I am going to need 4 external backups.

It is a Manhattan USB / EATA Enclosure 3.5 (large internal HD). Model Number unknown.

I knew I should have invested in 'more' storage . Well, my weekly backup was today even though I normally backup files right after.

Heres the basics: I had my digital camera connected to my computer via usb. Through an unfortunate series of events, my computer was on standbye and the camera got unplugged without telling the computer to disconnect it first. The computer told me a file was corrupt then shut off, and it won't start anymore. When I turn it on, the harddrives start working, but my master cd drive starts clicking. Neither cd drive works at all. I tried removing all the RAM and starting the computer to listen for beeps, but I heard none. From what i've read so far, that indicates a motherboard failure, but the no output points to a video card failure. I'm not sure what steps to take next, so any help will be very appreciated.

My computer: Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP Pro, 1gb RAM, 200 gb and 80 gb hard drive, 2.3 ghz pentium 4, sp1

A:Motherboard failure or video card failure?

What you can do is plug out everything just leaving you Ram, MB ,processor display card, power supply and turn on the machine once done and evrything runs smoothly and disply is shown than its none of the above device problem if there was a problem in that stage than you can narrow down try interchanging the ram module into different sockets. If you have another diaply card you can try that too. IF that worked try hooking up all devices one by one .See which one gives you problem.

Hi i have a Dell xps 400 that i purchased in 2006, , got a message on a black screen saying,
"Keyboard failure"
Floppy diskette failure
press F1 to continue, or F2 to run SETUP

I cant do either since my keyboard and mouse will not work on my pc but will work on another pc (MAC). Tried using a ps/2 keyboard and mouse with a converter still no luck. I also took the battery out and held the power button for 20 seconds after, also did the RTCRST jumper reset on CMOS still no success. After replacing the lithuim battery more messages popped up along with the keyboard and floppy, Alert! previous fan failure. Alert! System battery voltage is low. Invalid configuration information-please run SETUP program. Please help me figure out what is wrong with my desktop i have alot of info on there that i cant afford to loose that is why im trying to restore to satisfactory condition. Thank you in advance. Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving.

A:keyboard failure, floppy diskette failure,

Since this is happening during POST, I'd say that your mobo is bad. Since your keyboard works on a different computer, that's definitely not the issue. Here's what I'd do:

1) Remove all components that don't need to be there (i.e. RAM, floppy drive, NIC (if it's not integrated), CD/DVD drive(s), and any non-essential PCI cards

2) Boot the PC.

If it makes it past POST without error,

3) Start reintroducing components one by one. Booting each time to see if it still passes POST error free.

If not, I'd say that your mobo is definitely dead.

[edit - Be sure to power off and unplug the PC when removing and reinstalling components.]

Once you find the bad component, you know what to replace. Or it could be that one of the components, such as the RAM, just needed to be reseated.

Let me know how this goes.

My SMART data reports pre-failure and old age in each category. It says overall health as "Passed". What do these mean and will a simple overwrite help it repair bad parts/sectors, or is this drive headed for failure in the very near future?

Is there anything I can do in the interim to mitigate the failure?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

A:Pre-failure and Old-age questions -Drive headed for failure?

Smart is quite unreliable, i have a machine running an SSD that has failed smart since the day i put it together (all new components)

My advice would be to play safe and backup all data on the drive immediately then run some other tests/diagnostic software on the drive
Crystal disk can give some good info but personally i always go to the hdd manufacturers website and download their specific software for their brand of drive which IMO is going to give accurate results
Not knowing what disc you have i cant point you to any specific software but for example if you have a seagate drive you would need seatools which you can find here SeaTools | Seagate
You can also try running a windows disk check on the drive Disk Check

Have a read of this for a bit more info Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Some tests can be run from within windows others are bootable programs that will run at boot up

If your not sure or have any questions feel free to post back

I've read a few threads here on these forums and have found a few similar situations but nothing that really matches what i'm dealing with. Here goes:

I was playing a game when my PC made a short strange muffled hissing noise and then popped. The PC completley shut down like someone has pulled the plug. Almost right away it smelled like an electrical fire. I figured this was the power supply (NZXT 550W) since it is around 4 years old and has been through a lot.

The following day I went to best buy and picked up a Thermaltake TR2 600W PSU and installed it. After plugging in the main power cord from the wall outlet I switched on the PSU itself. Inside, the SB PWR light on the MB lit up. I thought this was good news. I hit the power button for the whole system and
the CPU fan moved slightly and the front LED light quickly flashed on and off. Then nothing. I checked to make sure all connections were snug. Same result.

I can't remember why but I unplugged the 4-pin Auxillary... Read more

I am using a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo on Vista 32-bit.
I recently downloaded a programme reputed to provide me with a UK ISP ident so I could access various UK programmes. I understand there is a similar facility for US citizens abroad.
The programme I downloaded was ineffective. I uninstalled it.
Since then my 3G connection will not connect (Error 720 A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network setting for this,)
In my innocence I tried System Restore. The message received was (System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system. Incompatible version of the serialising pattern.)
An online advisory dite advised uninstalling and re-install the 3G driver. I did.
I have since had notices that the driver was not installed correctly and two advices that it has been installed correctly.
I am now receiving Error Code 680 - No dialling tone.
Any assistance that anyone could give to this 70 year old re-cycled teenager would be most gratefully received - particularly if offered in very simple language!!
