No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Q: No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19295458.aspx
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/p/18112824/18235810.aspx#18235810

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

Hi. Just recently I clicked on my song list to play a song and couldn't get any volume. I pulled up the playback control and the the Wave slider was pulled down. I pushed it up and volume was restored. This had never happened before. I thought the slider only moved with the mouse? I suspect it has something to do with Winamp since it doesn't seem to happen with other players (Media etc.). I have looked everywhere I could think of to see what the problem might be..no luck. I prefer to use MP3Pro as my player. Where do I go to set Pro as my default? Any help on the slider will be appreciated.

I keep getting this error after right-clicking the microphone's control panel taskbar icon. I still can open the panel and change the settings, but this error is stressing me out. I just switched to a completely new PC and I'm afraid that this might be caused by some hardware malfunction. It never happened before on the old machine. I even did full system re-installation but I keep getting this error.

Did you first install the software for the mic before connecting it? If you connected it first there could be incorrect drivers installed by Windows.

its the same issue im having, but for call of duty 4. while im playing or not playing the settings in volume control under microphone keeps muting it self. in the post above nothing came of it im hoping by now maybe someone was able to find the issue.
ive checked all the settings everything is working great but it just keeps checking the mute by it self. the only thing i can think of is...is there a short key that when pressed or combo of keys that when pressed will check the mute under microphone in the volume control in windows.

I have a friend who bought a new microphone for her laptop, which runs Windows XP Home Edition. The mic is one of the ones with the pink input plug, which her laptop does support. When she plugs it in and tries to record something, it's just dead silence.

I tried to walk her through un-muting the mic, but she has no options for that under Sound/Volume control. Under Options->Properties there is no option to select Microphope or Line In to be enabled in the main window.

I got her to update her sound drivers, but it didn't help, either.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong, and why there is no way to enable microphone settings under the Sound/Volume control section? Thanks...

When you were checking in Options => Properties, did you look in both 'Playback' and 'Recording' (click the radio button). They can be listed in either/or or both.

I was working on getting my new headset's mic to be recognized by my computer but was unsuccessful. I tried to install an update to my current sound card driver as I had an inkling that might be the problem. However now I have no sound at all. No volume control panel nothing as option is grayed out. I checked the device and it says This device is not working (code 10). I have a realtek sound card. Usually came up in the volume control screen as Avance AC'97 Audio.

Any suggestions. I have downloaded drivers and nothing. Starting to annoy me as now I can't run skype which is the only reason I care about sound. Otherwise I don't use it for anything else. Sound in applications annoy me. However I would like to talk with my best friend on skype again. LOL

Hello,

I just got the Dictation 11.0 voice to text software in the mail, and after installing it and using the headset microphone (everything working perfectly), I pulled the microphone cord out of the jack while the software was loaded (why i do not know why i did that) and when I put it back in it does not work.

A bit of background info:

I run windows vista on a laptop and when I tried to trouble shoot it, my bright idea was to go into control panel and disable the mic, and the try to enable it again. Now I cannot find my microhpone anywhere in the control panel to re-enable it. The software still picks up that the microphone is connected (although the control panel does not), but neither can register any sound.

I did check to see if anything was muted in the mixer, and nothing is.

Does anyone have any ideas?

forever grateful for any input.

thanks

tim

Hi

The microphone or line-in port is not listed because you are searching for this in audio *output* settings!
The microphone is an input device so it?s not listed there.

If you go to the volume controls > options > properties you can switch to ?HD Audio input?.
Now you can change the microphone volume! :)

I don't think this was happening before I got the Lenovo TB3 dock, but here's what happens:I want to click on the volume icon in the system tray and adjust the volume. However, when I click on it, it pops up a single line of text titled "Speaker (ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3...)", then I have to click on it to expand the list of playback devices, then I to select the "Speaker (ThinkPad Thu...)" device, then it finally lets me change the volume. That's 3 clicks to do what 1 click SHOULD do. Seems like a Windows 10 issue to me, so I googled it and found absolutely nothing that's similar. Of course I have this device set as my default playback device. Windows knows my defaults because I can push the physical volume keys on my keyboard and they adjust the correct default device. Not sure why the system tray icon is acting like this. It happens every time I click on the icon, even if I just did it 3 seconds prior. An annoyance for sure. Just wondering if anyone has an idea of how to solve it. Don't tell me to just use my physical volume keys, haha, as they are kind of tucked under the desk unless I slide my keyboard tray out further.

I have been searching different forums where the speaker icon has disappeared from the notification area of the task bar, but have not found a solution to the particular problem I am experiencing. In my case the speaker icon is still visible but when I click on it, I no longer get the vertical bar which allows me to adjust the volume. I have made no recent changes to my computer and cannot understand why this has suddenly happened. I have gone to taskbar properties and tried turning the volume icon on and off but this has not cured the problem.

I have discovered the problem I am experiencing is limited to my user account only. I have one other named account and a guest account. The other user is able to adjust the volume from the speaker icon on the notification bar, and when I log into the guest account I find it is also working perfectly. I am not able to record or hear sounds from my office based Packard Bell laptop running MS Windows XP Professional SP2.

The mixer device is Realtek AC97 Audio which appears to be installed and running OK. The driver is also current.
The attached speakers and Logitech headphones work OK on my personal laptop and are plugged properly.
The control panel volume options are grayed out for both "Device Volume" and "Speaker Settings" in Sounds And Audio Devices Properties.
I am using Windows Default Sounds.
There are no error flags on the "sound, video or game controllers" under Device Manager.
Sound playback default device is Realtek AC97 Audio and sound recoring default device is Logitech USB Headset. MIDI music playback default device is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth.
Voice playback default device is Realtek AC97 Audio (using laptop speakers selected) and sound recoring default device is Logitech USB Headset.
Troubleshooting has not pointed to any problems.
The problem surely rests with the grayed out volume options with the volume slide set to 0. From my many attempts to Google a solution I am of the opinion that this is not an uncommon problem.
Can someone please help.

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all"...it doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

Hello!
I got myself an Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ condenser microphone a few weeks ago, and I haven't really found out how I can change the gain, which I hear is important to do.
There is only one slider where the gain slider also should have been. The mic doesn't have a gain know like some other microphones have.

As you can see there is one slider. It only changes volume as far as I know.

How can I change the gain, is it needed, or can I maybe control gain using the volume slider?
If I can't change it directly through the mic or through the control panel, how can I change it? D:

Thanks in advance!

A:Can't control gain! No slider in control panel!

I have a recording studio (Sonar X3) and use several AT mics but they are not USB mics (such as the AT2035 and AT2050).

"Volume level" is the same as "gain". You can adjust the "Volume Level" or you can adjust the "gain" - both are the same thing. On mixers, amplifiers, etc, some will call the volume control "level" and others "gain".

A USB mic should have its own listing in the Sound/Recording Panel. Whatever slider that is has, such as what you show, should adjust the volume level. Many recording programs also have volume level adjustments.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

I have a website I hit everyday that has been working great.  I start audio and could scroll down with arrow keys. After install of Bios Update - 7 V1.42Hotkey Features Integration V.9.0.4.1 The arrow keys now control volume AND scrolling. Is there a way to disable the volume control of the arrow keys? Thanks. Peace out.

For some reason the onscreen display for the volume controls and screen brightness on my W530 stop working after coming back from sleep or resume. I updated Power Management, Hotkey and Interface but the problem still rears its ugly head. If I go into screen resolution and advanced and on screen then uncheck Enable onscreen and recheck it...the controls work again.

try to reinstall the OSD software. Uninstall the current OSD software that you have, and download the latest version from below.

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

windows xp sp2
1.8ghz
2gig ram.
anything else? sound card? the sound card came with the mobo. its a Realtek AC'97.
thanks for any help.

Hello, Ten Forums!

I was wondering whether it were possible to open the volume mixer instead of the volume control when left-clicking on the volume icon in the tray. At the moment I have it set to open the old classic menu, but not the volume mixer.

So, is it possible?

Thanks.

Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

i searched the net an couldn't find anyone that seemed to want to have this option, which is weird. In XP when you clicked the mixer you could easily adjust the playback/output levels of Line in and Mic. It is really pissing me of that, since i have a TV tuner card with an external cable connecting the audio from the card in to the Line in, i have to go to Playback devices -> Speakers -> Levels -> Line in| every time i want to adjust the sound level coming from my TV card. In short, is it possible to make the mixer look like this?

Obviously photoshopped

A:Line in and Micophone playback control in Mixer

Hi, SasquatchSK, and welcome to the forums.

In Vista mixer is for output. For input you'll need to right click on the speaker icon and set the levels for your independent input devices manually.

Hi CBWEB! Welcome to SevenForums! If it's Font's you need that folder address is C:\Windows\Fonts

I don't think that the Control Panel even has an address.

Thanks,

Have you run a virus scan lately? More than likely it is DEP (in system control panel) but since you cant get there yooou options are limited

Do you have a backup that we can restore?

Do you have the win 7 dvd to do a reapir install?

A:control panel is gone

First off, have you installed or uninstalled anything since the last time you saw the control panel?

Also are you trying to access control panel from the Start menu or from My Computer? If it is the start menu, the control panel link can be hidden.

If that dosen't work there are a lot of sites that report this same problem, this one seems to have a fix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114010.html

It seems to involve a lot but it is one of the only ones that seem to have the problem fixed.

There are also these, but they don't seem to have confirmed fixes, although they may be a good resource.

Sorry if this is too much info. Give it a good look over if you can.

Hope it helps.

My control panel is missing from my start menu. When I click on "set program access and defaults" I get the error message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is my home computer and I know that I didn't change anything. Any suggestions? A DELL tech told me I would have to reinstall windows. Really don't want to have to do this.

A:No control panel

Good news is you won't have to reinstall Windows. Bad news is that you've most likely got a virus on your PC.

I highly recommend that you head over to the HijackThis forums. Follow this 5 Step Guide to post a log. The analysts over there will help you remove any viruses or nasties from your system.

We can try something to see if we can re-enable control panel. Note that if the virus or spyware program that disabled control panel is still on the computer this fix may only work temporarily or not at all.

1. From the Start menu, choose Run...
2. type regedit
- You can screw things up if you go around changing things with regedit when you don't know what you're doing, so be careful here.
3. From the Edit menu, choose Find...
4. type (or copy and paste) NoControlPanel in the search box and uncheck "Keys" and "Data" (so only "Values" is checked)
5. Choose OK to begin the search. It should find an entry that looks like
NoControlPanel REG_DWORD 0x00000001

6. Double-click this. Change the value to 0 (zero) and choose OK
7. Press F3 to repeat the search. There may be multiple entries you need to change. Keep doing this until it reports it can't find any more

Note that you may need to reboot before the control panel reappears. Also, can you get into control panel if you go to Start > Run and type "control.exe" without the quotes?
