I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having a problem when I plug my headphones in (I have interrnal speakers) it shuts the computer off. I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of this happening. My guess is that there may be a short but I'd like to hear any other ideas.

A:Plugging in headphones shuts off PC

Tried different headphones? Have the latest sound card drivers? List some system specs too. Including, of course, your sound card. Also, is this into a CD drive, or the main audio out?

Hey guys, I'm being plagued with BSODs yet again.

However, they almost always happen whenever I plug in my headphones to the audio jack
on the front of my case. Note: I've been using these headphones for months with this computer and have had no issues.

I recently got a new motherboard and reinstalled windows, so I'm not sure if that messed anything up.
My audio driver for the headphones is Realtek by ASUS.

All files included. Thank you.

Do you have a OEM or a Retail version of Wondows 7?

Did you get proper activation of Windows 7 after replacing the motherboard?

I was watching a streaming video with low sound so I thought I would plug my earbuds in to hear better. I plugged it in and heard sound for a split second then nothing. I unplugged the buds only to find that there is no sound at all through the speakers now.

I have a laptop Dell Inspiron N5110. I "upgraded" to Windows 10 sometime in July, I believe.

I tried rebooting to see if that would fix the problem. Nope, it didn't work.

Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks

A:Plugging in headphones, now no sound at all!

Found the fix on another forum.

Here it is:

Check the Sound devices listing in the Device Manager. What is the status that is shown for IDT HD Audio? Does it show as working OK, or is there an error code (post the code).

If it shows working OK, RIGHT click on the IDT entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the audio. This fixes any corruptions and hopefully will fix yours.

This fixed the problem though I don't know what caused it in the first place.

All is right in the world, again.

A mod can mark this issue as solved.

Hi all,

If this is in the wrong forum, please move, but I figured it might be Windows 10 issue.

I've bought a new laptop with Windows 10 (first time on this OS; last one was running Win 8), and am having an audio issue. Speakers work perfectly fine, but as soon as I plug my headphones in, audio doesn't come through them. If I check the Playback Devices, the green bars on the speakers are going up and down, so audio is there, but it's not coming through the headphones.

I've tried messing around with all sorts of things. Updating drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers - just about every option I can find in the audio panels - but nothing.

The only solution I have is if I restart my laptop with the headphones plugged in. Upon reboot, the audio will work through them. But as soon as I unplug and replug, the sound is gone again. I've also tried with a different pair of headphones and had the same results.

Never had an issue like this before, and I'm at a loss as to where to look next, with nothing on Google helping me.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

Running Windows 7 64-bit (up-to-date) on an Acer Aspire 6930G here with RealTek HD audio (driver up-to-date). When I plug in my headphones, I'd like the sound level to be low (around 2 or 3), but when using the built-in laptop speakers the volume needs to be at around 50.

Is there any way to make the volume behave the same way it does on an iPhone or iPod Touch when plugging in headphone?

For example: When you plug in your headphones in an iPod Touch, you can set the volume to, say 50%. Now when you unplug your headphones you can change the volume level to 100%, now when you plug in your headphones again the volume will be 50% again.

Sorry if this question has been answered before, I've tried the search function, but did not find the answer.

Thanks in advance ,

A:How To Let The Volume Change When Plugging In Headphones?

Hi qwaszxqwaszx welcome to Seven Forums.

I must admit, I am not familiar with the Realtek sound program, as I use the default Windows one.

However, on my machine at least, when I click the "volume" icon on the bottom right hand corner (next to the clock) it remember's different settings for headphones and speakers, the two are completely independent. Is this not the case for you?

I have also tried different wall outlets in my house to eliminate the possibility of electrical problems from the outlet I was using. Not only am I not able to use my front panel connections, but also my comp runs very choppy after it freezes from plugging in devices and I am forced to restart my comp several times to get it working correctly again. Since buying a new laptop and updating to windows 10 I have had a problem with the sound, the problem being that when I plug in a set of headphones I manually have to go on playback devices to set my headphones as default and also on the volume mixer to select my headphones on the drop down arrow or else the sound will keep coming out of my speakers. Basically it is not doing anything automatically, so everytime I plug in headphones, or connect to the tv I have to change everything manually, and do the same thing when disconnecting or else there will be no sound atall.

I did read on the internet that by plugging in my headphones and then making them my default sounds device would work because it is supposed to automatically change when they are unplugged but unfortunately this is not the case for me. Also I am curious as to why even when I don't have my headphones plugged in, they are still listed under playback, but it does not say they are unplugged. I would appreciate anybody who can help me with this problem because I have run out of ideas.

Many thanks in advance

Hi,

I just installed 7 64-bit from Vista 32-bit on my Dell Vostro 1500. 7 automatically supported my Sigmatel sound card with Microsoft's High Definition Audio Device driver; Dell Support don't have any compatible audio drivers for my new OS.

Sound works well through the speakers, but when plugging in headphones into the jack, the system's volume jumps to a different value - usually to a higher level when lower beforehand, and vice versa. Upon removing the heaphones, the volume returns to its original value.

Is there anything I can do to keep the volume constant?

Thanks!

A:Volume jumps when plugging in headphones

Hi wassupjg and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

Did you have the same behaviour when you had Vista? I suspect that it is a driver issue. The MS drivers are OK, but they only provide basic functionality. Other features, such as equalisers, etc, are only available by using device-specific drivers.

My problem is this, my motherboard is Biostar TP67B and I have downloaded the sound drivers from the manufacturer website which is realtek high definition audio. However, If i had left my headphone plugged into my front panel jack and when I restart my computer, the headphone icon keeps flickering saying its plugged and unplugged constantly when it is in fact plugged in. I had tinker around a little bit and I have no idea how to fix this problem now. Its going bad to worse as it unplugs itself randomly now. I'm trying to go for a full reinstall of my sound drivers.

A:Headphones Plugging and Unplugging constantly bug

Have you tried a different headphone? Maybe the headphone and not the PC or headphone jack.

If not the headphone, check the connection from the front panel at the motherboard, May be a bad connection there. Reseat (unplug then plug back in) the connector at the motherboard. If it still has problems I would suspect the front panel headphone jack, or the wiring.

Hey fellas,

This happens on WAY to many cases I come across. Almost every case from Codgen seems to have this issue, as well as it has happened a couple times on my own case from A-Top.

When you go to plug in a headset or speakers, as soon as the metal from the stereo plug touches the metal from the FRONT audio jack, the PC instantly restarts.
It's obviously a power issues, bad ground, whatever. There is no BSOD or anything like that. Just instantly restarts. It bugs the heck out of me cause I'd really like to use these front jacks. It doesn't happen on rear jacks.

Anybody else have this happen on their case? I'd like to know if there's anything I can do about it. Perhaps add something nonconductive between the jack and case? Or put a resistor somewhere? Why would plugging in a headset cause a reboot? I'm no electrical engineer. If it's a ground issue, can I change the case in some way to stop this?

thx

A:System restarts when plugging in headphones or speakers

You know, another thing that is odd about this issue is that, as far as the case is concerned, I can "zap" it all day long and never get a restart. That is, if I have static buildup and touch the metal somewhere and get zapped, it doesn't ever restart. But only through the audio jack. So this obviously limits it to the audio subsystem.

Of course, half of it is just cheap cases, but still, there must be something that can be done.

Hi Everyone, Has anyone else encountered this problem where plugging in some speakers, or headphones into the audio jack does not change where sound is coming from if the application is already open? So for example, I'm listening to music on iTunes or Youtube through the laptop's speakers, then if I plug in my earphones, it does not automatically change output to my earphones. The computer recognises that my earphones are in, and changes the volume controls to be for my earphones, but sound still comes out of my laptop speakers. I've already tried setting the headphones as default on the playback settings. The only way to change it that I have found is I have to exit the application and then open it up again. But this problem will persist if I want to unplug my earphones and change back to laptop speakers, I have to close and open the application again. It may be a Windows 10 issue, but if anyone has a solution to this problem that would be great. Thanks,Sean

Hi @SpurCarnage?,  Thank you for your query. I grasp that if you are listening to  music and connect your headset the sound comes from both the notebook and the headset. You have set the headset as the default playback device.  If you close the music program and open it with the headset attached then you only have sound in the headset, but if you disconnect the headsets you do not get sound from the speakers.Although you have sound, please try the steps in the followind link. HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 10, 8) Have you checked for viruses and malware? Please let me know the outcome. Thank you  for participating in the HP Forums! Hello. I recently ran into a problem, all of a sudden when plugging my controller into the usb the sound stopped coming out of my speakers. I had thought maybe it was just an error or something so I restarted and checked my drivers, they were all updated. so then I noticed that my taskbar was registering that I had headphones plugged in, when I didn't. so I unplugged the controller from the usb and the sound came back to my laptop. I uninstalled the controller drivers and figured they would re-install and the problem would be solved. ( I also checked to see if it was the usb in my laptop that was faulty and I can still connect a mouse or ps3 controller just fine) the problem still persists and I'm not sure what else to try.

XPS 9350 - Windows 10
Can I make Dell Audio (or something) automatically route the sounds to my headphones when I plug them in?  I didn't see any option within the Dell Audio menu to toggle that option.
I do quite a bit of work in my school's library, meaning I need to be quiet.
The problem is that when I plug in my headphones, I have to wait for Dell Audio to pop up and then I have to confirm my selection of "headphones with microphone" before any sound will go to them.  Only then will the sound go to my headphones.  While I do this, my computer starts dinging and beeping all the latest notifications for anyone nearby to hear, until I do the confirmation.
To make matters worse, if I plug in my headphones on the Windows lock screen and then sign in, the Dell Audio pop up never comes up; however, I still get the Windows notification center give me a notice, but it is non-interactive.  So then I have to unplug the headphones, wait for all the alerts saying that I unplugged something to go away, then plug them in the again.  If I don't wait for the alerts to clear, the Dell Audio selection windows won't load.  Again, the dings and beeps are going once I sign in and do all of this.
Of course, this is all provided I didn't mute the audio before I closed the lid the last time I used it.

A:Dell Audio - automatically switch to headphones when plugging them in.

SOLUTION: the pop up menu isn't clear.
If you toggle the option at the bottom saying to not pop up each time something is plugged in, it will just automate whatever it is you plug in (at least I can confirm that for 'headphones with microphone').
The way the radio button is phrased, simply sounds like it's just meant to turn off the pop up and nothing more.

Hiya, I've just installed Ubuntu (Willy Werewolf) on my HP Spectre - most things worked straight away, and I'm super happy with it. My biggest problem that I've been struggling with is the sound: the speakers work perfectly, however when I plug my headphones in, sound plays through both the speakers and headphones. I've checked out the levels in the mixer, and the system is noticing when the headphones are plugged in, and is turning down the Speakers channel correctly (as observed in alsamixer) - it's just that this seems to have no effect on the physical hardware. If I change the Headphone level, this effects the volume in both the speakers and headphones. What's interesting is that, when the headphones are plugged in, the speakers actually disappear from the system settings and console listings mark them as "unavailiable". As the system appears to be doing things correctly from a software perspective, I assumed this may be a driver problem? If anyone has seen anything like this before, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance  Also the little LED on F6 doesn't come on when I mute any more, but I can live without that so I don't really care (but if anyone knows an easy way to turn this on / off via the comand line, I'll get a script to do it).

Do the speakers still work after you have unattached /reattached the mic?

Presuming you are running Windows (as you haven't specified)

Open control panel, then open Sound (depending on your OS and view options you may need to click on the Hardware and Sound option first or similar)

In the sound window, click on the Recording tab.

With the Mic attached how many devices do you see?

Is the Mic on your headset set as Default?

If you remove the mic and reattach (with the sound window open) does the mic get recognised and show back up in this list?

Does it remain as default / enabled?

In the System Sounds, there is an option for device connect or disconnect. This will probably do what you want. You will have to assign a sound for those functions.

The System Sounds panel can be accessed from Start/Control Panel/Hardware and Sounds. Click on "Change System Sounds".

Hi Ruben_Palacios ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

First to make sure that Airplane mode (page 6) is not enabled, there is a hotkey on top of the keyboard with an icon of a plane.  Check if that would enable your wifi .

Else you can try to set the default of the BIOS ,
Access the BIOS by turning off the laptop and then use the Novo button (item2 page 9) on the left side next to power to turn it on. Novo menu would appear to offer BIOS set up , F9 to load defaults F10 to save and exit .

Load up windows and check if there is a wifi icon at the base of the screen.
Check also on device manager if there is any yellow mark or black down arrow  to indicate any need to reinstall drivers from the support website.

Update us how it goes.

Hi Guys,
I tried to enable/activate my administrator account by following these steps:

1. Open the Local Users and Groups manager.
2. In the left pane, click on the Users folder.
3. In the middle pane, right click on Administrator and click on Properties.
4. To Enable the Buit-in Administrator Account Uncheck the Account is disabled box.
after creating enabling the administrator account I just rename it to my interested nickname and I set a password for that.
But I still have to run some programs as "Run as Administrator" while I am in administrator account!. I can also see and access to all of stored file and folders (which I saved as Administrator in my document) when I log in as a standard user!

I also enable / activate Hidden Administrator Account by this way:
1. Type "secpol.msc" in RUN dialog box or Startmenu search box, it'll open "Local Security Policy" window.
2. Goto "Local Policies -> Security Options".
3. Double-click on first option "Accounts: Administrator account status" and select "Enabled" and apply it.

Could you please let me know what I am missing here?

At the same time, the account that was created when you installed Windows is by default an administrator account. However, you do indeed need to use elevation for certain tasks.

...for SELECT programs? For example, I like to game with headphones on, I listen to music with headphones on and more. I don't like to unplug them every time I'm done, that's too confusing and more importantly, I FORGET ALL THE TIME. So, if anyone could kindly help me find a way to play my "Free Alarm Clock" (please Google to find it because I'm afraid to post links) through the speakers despite having headphones plugged in, I would greatly appreciate it. I use it not only to wake up but also to remind me of other daily things.

Just to be clear: I'm not looking for something to play sound through headphones and speakers simultaneously. That would defeat the purpose.

Thanks in advance!

PS
A command would also work, I believe.

A:How do you enable speaker output while headphones are on?

Hey mate,

Don't be afraid to post links, just make sure they aren't walware lol.h
When your headphones are plugged in, do they show up in sounds?:

If so, that is a good way to switch it. If not, see if you can't find out more about sounds with your sounds control center. I think you only get such a thing if you have a sound card. Some built-in ones come with such a control center. Take a peek in there to see what you can find.

I've been through some guides on internet and the problem is that my headphones are being detected as speakers even though I tick the square that stands for headphones (pop-up window then device is pluged-in).

What I wanna do is that I want to hear voice from speakers and headphones at the same time. I can't do that and if I want to switch from one device to another I need to unplug headphones (or plug in).

A:Can't enable both headphones and speakers at the same time

Mark them as separate playback devices. That's about all I can say based on what little info you have provided.

Ok i am back again with a problem, actually not a problem. Do any one of u have any idea how to enable my laptop speakers and headphones at the same time. I mean both should make sound simultaneously.

A:How to enable my laptop speakers and headphones at the same time

I don't believe it is possible. As far as I know, the sound card can only output one channel at a time. I don't know to much about the specifics of audio cards so I am assuming.

Hi Matt -

Did you buy a copy of Win7 from your school? Is this a retail copy of Win7 or is it one which is activated by the school's IT department?

If it's a retail copy then with the Product Key you should have been given at purchase you can follow the steps in this link to Clean Install Windows 7. Be sure to boot the disk: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

If it's an organization's Enterprise copy, consult your School on how to activate it.

Ask back any questions you have as we will help you set it up so it runs perfectly.

I need to know this, as I hear Defragmentation can damage an SSD if it is performed on it. Now we know Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 possess the Automatic Maintenance routine, where it starts to run some maintenance tasks when the computer is idle (apparently after 4 minutes of not detecting user activity with the keyboard or mouse and usually only once per hour).

Now my current computer runs a HDD, and it does the regular Defrag every week or so when it can try and do so.

However... SSDs can't be defragged, they have their own mechanism. TRIM.

My planned computer build involves an SSD used as a OS Drive which also holds the browser and Anti-Virus Software Suite (which is going to be Kaspersky. Cause its decent and better than Norton). And also a HDD for storage of photos, videos, games, documents, etc.

So it has one thing that needs TRIM and can't be defragmented and one thing that can't use TRIM and needs defragmentation.

Does Windows 8.1's Automatic Maintenance differenciate between the two and just run TRIM on the SSD and Defrag on the HDD without performing the wrong thing on the other?

A:Does Windows 8.1 Automatic Maintenance activate TRIM?

Why Windows 8 and 8.1 defragment your SSD and how you can avoid this ? ????? ???????

Greetings community,

This is a very weird problem which I never had before. When I'm in gaming sessions such as WoW, CoD and more even 8ball pool... the sound from headphones just "cut" and goes to speakers.

So while gaming it's alright but when the sound gets "Loud" it just stops working and I have to plug it again to work which is really irritating.

Any help please? I searched the internet but didn't find anything much useful.
Notes: I have tried different headphones (still same issue)

Thanks for your interest!

I have a Dell desktop with XP media edition (SP2 installed) on it. I have had it for 2-3 years. When I got it I disabled Automatic Updates. Recently I have been having virus/spyware problems (fixed when I updated McAfee and ran it) and decided to try and update windows but MS Update web page says I need to enable automatic updates on the PC to proceed. The problem is I cannot enable automatic updates. I tried using Control Panel Automatic Updates and that did not do anything. They I ran services.msc and right clicked on Automatic Updates and tried to change the settings and when I hit apply I got an error message saying "Services Denied".

Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to fix it?

I thought of uninstalling SP2 and re-installing it but do not want to do that unless it makes sense and will work

thanks for your help

I posted this on the OS forum and it was suggested that I generate an HJT log here. I have a Dell XP media edition with SP2 machine. When I got it I disabled automatic updates. I had some trouble with it recently and seemed to fix it with McAfee and wanted to enable automatic updates. I tried using control panel updates to do it but it did not work. I tried running services.msc to enable automatic updates and it responded with 'services denied'. I tried running some other command as suggested by a post and I get "access denied" now.

Here is the HJT log. Thanks in advance for your help

Hi,

My mom's laptop picked up the XP Security 2012 malware, and I think I've all but wiped it out thanks to the instructions on this site. However I'm still not able to turn Automatic Updates back on, so I think I may still be infected. I downloaded Comodo Antivirus and scans are showing negative. How do you think I should proceed?

Hi guys! my first real virus problem after 10 years - hope you can help!
First noticed a problem when Automatic Update got deactivated and I couldn't turn it on. Computer slowed down, couldn't download files using Firefox, which also crashed a few times unexpectedly. I looked into the services and found the file /system32\svchost.exe -k, which even to my amateur eyes looks suspicious. Searching your forums, I guessed combofix might fix the problem. So I tried that, and it seemed solved - for a day or so! Now I can't turn auto update on again. What should I do?

Hello Karl Fraser,Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer. Let's get a fresh copy now. This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.1. Download this file - combofix.exe http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall. Please do this:1. Download HijackThis? here:http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/th.../hijackthis.php2. Click 'Do a System Scan and Save log'.The HJT log will open in notepad. Thanks, tea

I've just installed SP2 on a customer's Dell running XP Home, and the red shield pops up in the bottom right corner warning me that automatic updates are turned off. When I try to turn it on it apologises and says that the security centre could not change your automatic update settings. However, if I go into the automatic updates tab in the system control panel (as it suggests), it's set to automatic, and when I go online it starts downloading updates. How can I get the security center to realise that automatic updates are turned on? I tried going into the services control panel and setting the automatic updates service to automatic, and it tells me that the service has been marked for deletion. As an aside, this computer has had the Sdbot virus on it, which I removed; I suspect that the virus is behind this problem but it comes up clean when I scan it now.

I've already done a repair install of XP, and registered the following files as suggested on one of the 2 hits Google gave me:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
