external HHD with more files than its count?

Q: external HHD with more files than its count?

Hi all,

when I right click on my external portable 1TB HHD to check how full it is I get 931GB , but when i sum up all my files I get 563GB ... so I don't know what are these extra 368GB .. i am aware of a few hidden folders of which i can't change the attributes for some reasons.. but i counted 148GB, so a lot of GB are still missing ...

Does anyone know how how to spot all the hidden files? and above all how to unhide them? I tried with the CMD attrib -H ... many different version of the sentence but it never worked.

I'm mainly interested to identify these files that are not showing up and eventually get rid of it, in order to have the sum of the files = at the size of the occupied space.

many thanks!

Preferred Solution: external HHD with more files than its count?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Configuration: Office laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) and MS Office 2007 Pro; attached to MS Exchange Server 2003 using Cached Exchange Mode. Everything was working fine until I took laptop home, connected to my home network, VPN'ed into my office, and then returned to the office. Logged on and connected to Windows Server 2003 as usual. With one email in outbox, I Send/Receive and Outlook now reports sending 3 of 3. I think I noticed while VPN'ed into the office at home that it reported sending 2 of 2 with only one email in the outbox. What's up with this??? Thanks for any guidance.

I have a five user Office 365 license.

I want to install OneDrive on an old computer where I want to sync files, but don't need any Office application like Word on that. If I install OneDrive only and use the storage space, will that count as 1 of my 5 Office 365 licences?

Thanks.

The licenses is for the whole suite, even if you use one component of it.

Hi,
I bought a WD Passport 1 year ago, and I've tried to test it by HD Tune Pro and Hard Disk Sentinel.
And result are listed below:

How could I fix this error? I feel my drive doesn't work softly anymore
Thank you so much!

A:How to fix "Current Pending Sector Count" on WD External Drive

What does "work softly" mean?

https://kb.acronis.com/content/9133

which says:

"Current Pending Sector Count S.M.A.R.T. parameter is a critical parameter and indicates the current count of unstable sectors (waiting for remapping). The raw value of this attribute indicates the total number of sectors waiting for remapping. Later, when some of these sectors are read successfully, the value is decreased. If errors still occur when reading some sector, the hard drive will try to restore the data, transfer it to the reserved disk area (spare area) and mark this sector as remapped.

Recommendations

This is a critical parameter. Degradation of this parameter may indicate imminent drive failure. Urgent data backup and hardware replacement is recommended."

You could run checkdisk and see if the number changes.

Or you could reformat, which is a drastic step and may not help.

Or you could adopt a policy of "watchful waiting" and hope. Hope that it doesn't get worse, while keeping your personal data backed up elsewhere.

Or you could throw in the towel and buy a new drive now, if this is causing you to lose sleep.

I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).

Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that.

Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders
Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders

The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Win 7.

I have copied files from an infected computer to...
- a flash drive and a
- portable hard drive that plugs into a usb port

- the files I want to copy are both data files and application files...
- Data files include: text files, ms office documents, image files, videos, etc
- Application files include: MS Access mdb (data base) files which may include visual basic for applications code
- Ditto for Excel files
- Some application development stuff like MS Visual Studio Projects

How can I safely scan these files before putting them on a clean computer?

Thanks for any help.

PS

I think I have 'Autorun' turned off on the clean computer via using RegEdit to go to...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer > "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"

... and verifying that the hex value of the first byte is 95
... which as I understand it 'exclueds' unknown, removable, and remote drives from 'autorun'
... via instructions here... http://autorun.moonvalley.com/enable.htm

Install Panda USB Vaccine, or BitDefender?s USB Immunizer on your computer to protect it from any infected USB device. Then you're safe to connect any external device and scan it with your AV program.

Hello.
I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
When I plug in an SD card or USB drive into my computer all the files and folders are replaced with .lnk files with the same name as the original. In addition, all the files and folders are hidden, and I don't seem to be able to unhide them.
This does not happen every time I plug it in, but it happens fairly often. The motive behind the lnks is clear when I look at its properties. Here is an example of what one looks like replacing a file named splash.lua:

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c "start %cd%splash.lua & start %cd%wyNdYUwEdFccnce.exe & exit"
It is starting another hidden file which is the virus.
I've run full scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware, and Avast free Antivirus, but they found nothing. I even tried Malwarebytes AntiRootkit, and it found nothing either.

Possibly related to this, a folder appeared in the root of  both my hard drive partitions called $Recycle.Bin. I've heard of other people with this identifying it as malware, so I figured I should mention it.

However, the thing that worries me most is that if I didn't notice that the files were .lnks, I would have no idea anything fishy is going on at all. My antiviruses said nothing, and there's no reason to think I would have a virus.
Is there anyway to be sure there is no malware at all after I take care of it? For all I know, someone could be recording all my passwords and everything I type and I would have no idea.

Seeing that no one responded to your topic yet, I'd suggest you open another one in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/

I would approach your problem using Farbars Recovery Scan Tool, but as per forum rules I can't give you instructions regarding that on this forum, so I can't help you in that regard in this topic.

When you create another topic in the other forum section you could include a report from USBFix: http://www.en.usbfix.net (alternate download: http://www.infospyware.com/utiles/usbfix/ click "descargar").
Once downloaded start it as administrator (right click > run as admin) and when prompted connect your drives containing .lnk files. After that click 'research'. When completed a report will open (can also be found at C:\usbfix.txt). Post that one to your new topic.
You can open USBFix once again and this time press 'listing'. It will create another report detailing your various filesystem root locations. Attach that log file, too.

Best of luck.

sounds suspiciously like an HD failing. Might want to run a chkdsk to see and if so perhaps the mfrs disk checking app.

A- CHKDSK /R /F:

Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt.

Do this for each hard drive on your system.

When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter.

Then reboot and let the test run.

It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors.

See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.
B- Elevated Command Prompt:

Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)

At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"
C-CHKDSK LogFile:

Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter

Expand the Windows logs heading, then select the Application log file entry.

Double click on the Source column header.

Hello,

I have an external HDD with capacity of 160GB. I use it mainly on my PS2 because as the PS2 cannot play divx, I use a ps2 exploit to play divx on my PS2 from my external HDD.

I have formated the HDD to FAT32 as the PS2 doesn't support NTFS filesystem. I have been using the HDD for a very long time. Yesterday I tried to convert a movie to 1080p, it converted properly but it is now 4.41GB. It was ~700MB before. When I do copy and I paste it on my HDD, it says that the disk is full even though there is 132GB left on it.

I tried deleting soem movies from it but it's still the same. I thought maybe it's because the disk is formatted in FAT32. well, I don't know. So, any help?

Thanks in advance.

A:Cannot Copy some files to External HDD

Does the movie play on your desktop system which you converted to 1080P? Did you change the block size on the 160GB from 512 to 4096 when you had originally formatted it to handle larger media files.

I need to get access to some files I saved in an old Maxtor One Touch Plus external HDD some years back. I tried plugging the drive into my desktop. The power indicator on the drive lit up but I could not see it in the list of drives under the "My Computer" menu.

I checked under "Device Manager" and saw it was listed there. A friend advised me to assign a letter to the drive. I attempted to do this but I got a return from Windows saying that the drive is write protected so I could not complete the process.

Is there any other way I can recover my files from the drive?

There is always the idea of taking the drive out of the external and directly connecting the drive to your motherboard.

I wish I understood how the drive could be locked. Do you not have any options to unlock the drive?

Hello,

I have a 4 Tb external HDD that fell off a 2 drawer file cabinet. A 24 inch fall. Now I can't access my files. The Device Manager recognizes the drive. Windows Explorer recognizes some of the partitions. Explorer shows thumbnails of folders and files and file names. But when I try to open a file, a .jpeg for example, I get the message that the picture was either deleted or the location isn't available. I have a paid version of recovery software but that couldn't find the drive. Being an external and portable drive I thought it could survive a little fall. Any suggestions on what my options are to recovery these files?

Thank you,

Hi all

First thing, if this is in the wrong place please move it.

I'm currently trying to get some data from an old hard drive onto a new laptop. I've got the hard drive into a USB caddy and once I hooked it up I can see all the data on it (which was a relief, I thought I might have fried the drive completely previously).

I can't work out how to transfer it to the laptop. The laptop is windows 7 and the stuff on the old hard drive is all windows XP.

I'm not sure if I can use the windows easy transfer program to get it off with it just being a hard drive.

I've tried just dragging and dropping the files but it says I need to be in an administrator account. I am using an admin account on the laptop, do I need to somehow be using one on the old hard drive as well?

Do I need to change the ownership of the files on my old HD to that of the new computer? I knew how to do it in XP but I'm finding it difficult to work out in 7.

I'd prefer to be able to just drag and drop, its only some documents and some pictures I want to get off it, the rest of it I can happily live without.

Sorry if I'm being dense, I found the easy transfer steps confusingly written (though I imagine it'd be much easier to follow if it was another computer I was trying to get data from).

Any advice anyone can give would be much appreciated.

I use Acronis True Image Home 11 for backups, and I have found it very easy to use. I only do full image backups(large because of audio files) and my backup location is an external 250 GB hard disc. When I open Backup location on the HD, I find a long list of about 16 files for each backup. Why is this, and why is it that when I want to mount an image I only have to open one of these files. There is obviously something about external hard discs that I do not understand. Allan.

A:Puzzled By External HD files.

It depends what file system your external hard drive uses. FAT32 has a limit on the maximum file size, so a large image would be split across multiple files. Acronis may split the image even if the file system supports a single large file for compatibility reasons.

Hello!

I've moved tons of files to an external hard drive [Samsung external USB HD (FAT32)]. After that, I've tried to eject the device in Windows 7, via Safely Remove Hardware but Windows said that the device was in use, even though everything (applications and windows) were closed. I decided to use USB Safely Remove software to eject my portable HD. I really don't know if that was the problem, but since then I found a lot of folders inside my external HD corrupted.

In the corrupted folders, JPG files looks like this. I can't read the other files (PDFs and PSD) in those folders, Adobe Reader and Photoshop says that the file is damaged. I've tried Windows 7 error-checking but the files are still corrupted.

I would like to know if anyone ever had this problem.
Does anyone have any suggestion for this? Is it possible to recover the corrupted files?

Thanks in advance!

When you open a file (document, audio, photo, etc.) from an external drive (such as a USB drive or external disk drive), do any remnants of that file remain on the hard drive of the computer on which you opened it? I am mainly concerned with Windows based systems

I ask this because I am borrowing a laptop from a friend and some of the files on a USB drive are personal documents and family photos which I would prefer not to leave behind.

I know document names will remain in recent documents on some versions of Windows and that's fine, but is there an actual copy of a file kept temporarily on a hard drive on any Windows version? The machine I am using has Windows 7 32-bit on it.

Thank you,

If you open a word document, it may leave a temporary copy in the user account's document folder that you arelogged onto. My recommendation is for you to create your own user account and look at that stuff there and when you are done, delete your user account. Copying and pasting files via Windows explorer is always going to be a bit inefficient. There's a lot for the machine to do when explorer is in the way. There will be pauses on big files, especialy .iso files. (at least Windows 7 is better than Vista's copy/paste, which was just horribly slow)
Have you tried to do the copy job using RoboCopy instead of Copy/Paste in Windows explorer? RoboCopy is much more efficient. However, big .iso files & other big files will still pause during the run.

Hello, I'm hoping I might be able to find help here.

I'm visiting in a foreign country and accidentally contracted a virus on my external hard drive by plugging it into a public computer to do something for my job. The virus hid all of my folders and files, and made visible what looked like my files but were actually executable files instead. I believe I was able to remove the virus (though I'll take advice on that front also as I'm not very good at computer protection), and the only way I was able to make the folders visible again was by making all system files visible too. The virus made the 'Hidden' check box grayed out so that I cannot un-check it to make only my folders and files view-able. I am running Windows 7 64-bit.

Any advice that can be given would be greatly appreciated, and if you need more information that I did not know I needed to provide, please ask.

Thank you!

With lots of help from a local techie, I was successful in getting them all onto the desktop. Now I have an external enclosure for no really good use anymore (sold the old HD w/the broken laptop). A friend wants to create backup files & wants me to transfer them using this enclosure (PATA btw). I'm wondering if I can transfer the files from her old HD directly to disks or do I have to transfer them to her new computer and THEN to the disks? (she's getting a stack of CDRW's). Any help or friendly suggestions would be most appreciated!!!! THANK YOU!

I can't believe it! I FINALLY did a clean install of Windows 7. I made sure I did not have my external HD hooked up. I just hooked it up to see if my family's photos and videos were still on it. EVERYTHING IS GONE! The previous Back Up is Gone! And the folder holding my family photos and video ARE GONE!! What's going on!! I am so pissed!

I did have a virus on the Windows 7 computer. It was something like rough.hdd or something like that. Can it be that it made everything disappear on my external?

Does anyone have any suggestion on what's going on and if there is a way to find the files missing?

It never ends does it.

The file that is on the external HD is mediaID.bin

Hi,

Can you post a screen capture image of your Disk Management screen showing this external HDD please? Its possible the files are still there, just invisble.

I have a general question :

I have my sensitive files and data stored in either a USB or external drive. When these files are opened for viewing and editing (using Excel or Word) , then resaved back in the External Storage Media, will Windows 7 or any other Win OS for that matter retain the info somewhere in the computer that I use for editing after I exit the program ?

Thanks

A:USB ,External HDD files and Windows 7

it will retain nothing rather then a shortkut of those file locations in ur recent items folder....

Hey, I'm not very computer or thread literate so please excuse my ignorance.

I transferred my files from my laptop to an external HD when I was running Windows Vista. I confirmed all my files were safe and then I unplugged the HD and installed Windows 7 onto the laptop. I have two folders on the HD, one under my name and one under my wife's name. My files are all intact, whereas when I click on my wife's folder it simply says ntuser.dat and then a prompt saying I need a Corel program to read the files. However under properties for the folder it says that there are 7000 files in 200 folders. Have I deleted all my wife's files? Is there anyway that when I installed windows 7 that they weren't deleted? I did not perform format on the c: simply put in the windows 7 disk.

Thanks for any help,

Ben

A:Lost files on external HD

ntuser is a registry data file created by vista before you installed 7, suggest you install corel if you have licence or the free trial to see if you can open the files within

I have a Gateway laptop w/XP and Western Digital Passport external hard drive 250 Gb. My computer crashed on me this morning and when I tried to get back in to the external drive all files were gone.

I have Folder Lock installed on the external and it was unlocked at the time of the crash.

Explorer shows the drive (F but shows no files, not even Folder Lock. However, it indicates I have 129 Gb free space, which means the files should still be there, right?

I tried reinstalling Folder Lock on the drive, but still nothing.

I ran Pandora Recovery but it shows nothing on the disk.

I ran Trend Micro (w/all updates)

I ran CCleaner

I tried System Recovery - nothing changed. I went back 3 days - should I go back farther? Will it make any difference?

The drive has a variety of files on it - jpg, avi, doc, txt, mp3/4, etc.

With over 100 Gb on the disk, they can't have been deleted - that would have taken quite a long time. The files have to be there, but how do I recover them?

A:cant access files on external hd

System Restore isn't going to help you recover data files. You need to try something like Recuva recovery software I think, though I don't know how the presence of Folderlock might have affected the files.

I once deleted a 320 gig external, in my sleep no less, which you'd think would teach me not to work with the keyboard on my lap, but its there now...Recuva brought all 2000 files or so back safe and sound.

Hi there, I have a Toshiba External HDD 1TB, which has 160GB of data on it. The drive one day decided it was RAW format, and refuses to do anything at all on Win7 except be formatted. Same on Vista, though on XP it can be read and written to except every time I try to move the files, it comes up with "cyclic redundancy check" and refuses to do any more. I need to get these files off! Ideas please?

A:External HDD in RAW, need to recover files

I sorted the issue. If anyone has the same problem, I used Easeus Data Recovery to recover my files, then formatted the drive using Windows. Luckily enough I had just over 160GB free on my laptops HDD, or I would've had to buy/borrow another drive.

Hi all,

So I have an external drive with all my avi's on it, some older files remain but anything copied on in the last month is gone, it says the folder is empty.

I did get a few of delayed write failed error messages popping up today, and when i try to delete the folder that contained the avi it says it cannot be deleted.

any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

oK, UPDATE, I just plugged the drive back in and it has come up hardware unrecognised.... It was working fine for the last few months. Drive doesn't appear in device manager either

another update, tried to turnit on again and although it says device is working/ready to use i still cant find a drive in device manager.

we have 2 usb ports front and rear on the pc and i have sometimes had issues when the 2 in the rear are plugged in and something gets plugged in the front. between the last 2 edits i removed the printer from the front usb with the rears still full.

Including your system specs would be helpful. Nake Model system or if custom built, make model Mobo, CPU, Ram, Video, OS, PSU, HDDs Optical Drives

My external western digital hard drive has worked perfectly in the past. I used it to backup my computer when switching from xp to 7 and ever since then i can not see the files even though when i go to the properties it still says the space is used. (its 1T and amount used but invisible ~2gb) The rest is empty. How do i get these files visable again? I tried searching for hidden files and it didnt work either.

I have tons of important pictures, videos, and documents and need to get them back. Im hoping not to have to do an expensive data recovery service.

A:Files not visible on WD external HD

So the drive shows up fine in Windows explorer or My Computer but you see no files at all? That's pretty strange. You could always try one of the free recovery programs like Recuva to see if anything shows up.

Hello to everyone.

A few months ago,I bought an External Toshiba E.Store 3.5" 1.5 TB.I use it on Acer Aspire One-Netbook
Processor Intel Atom1.66GHZ,2gb ram
When I wanted to copy some files, regardless the amount of the files,or their capacitive, the copy just ended well.I use Teracopy.
A bit after,my copy is just freezing.Netbooks is working well, ram was not at high percents, neither cpu.
I had to open Task manager to close teracopy.
Other times, the -file copying- was ended well, other times not.
I did a format to my netbook, because I have searched and I found that maybe on my operating system was the problem. After the format nothing changed.
After a lot of search again,I found that chkdsk may help on the solution of this problem.3 days ago,I pluged my hdd and the *disk checker*(sorry if this is not the name)appeared.
I choose to 1)AutoCorrect file system errors
2)detection and recovery of bad sectors on the disk
(sorry again if this is not exactly what is saying,I'm using win7,greek edition)
This check was going well, but hangs a lot of hours at a sertain number of file.
I stopped the check, restarted windows, and opened Safe Mode to run check here.
Same problem appears.Check hangs at the certain number of files. But my hdd seams to be working, like the blue light is blinking.I saw on a forum that one person had a complete full 2TB external hdd and he took 47 hours to made check done.I am desperate for help,I can't copy a file bigger than 700mb-1gb.

Hi guys, I'm in a real pickle here. Several days ago I unplugged the USB cable from my 2TB eternal hard drive without using Safely Remove Hardware. I have had trouble before getting it to disconnect that way, so I just unplugged it. When I plugged it back in later, it came on, but didn't show any of my files and folders! It also was no longer named "Hitachi" but simply ":E" drive.

I made sure under Folder Options that I had "show hidden files and folders selected"

I unplugged it and reinserted it

I restarted my computer

I entered "attrib -h -r -s /s /d f:\*.*" in Command Prompt

I tried to view Dir in Command Prompt, and it gave an error message

I plugged the Hitachi into another computer

I entered chkdsk in Command Prompt, and it said:
E:\>chkdsk

Windows found errors on the disk, but will not fix them

I ran a program called Find and Mount and it found a FAT32 table, which showed me the same thing as before when I mounted it. When I tried deep scan overnight it found two small FAT16 tables which had a grand total of two recoverable jpegs on them.

Hi, I posted this at the end of another thread but haven't had a reply.

I have a 500g Lacie external hard drive which I plugged into the usb port on my networked pc at work and copied a few gig of files to it but when I clicked to safely remove it, I continually got the message that I couldn't remove it yet, despite the fact that I'd closed everything, so I left it plugged in and rebooted the pc, intending to remove it as the pc shut down. I then got distracted and next time I looked at my pc it was going through and just finishing a dos file checking process, presumably of the external drive. I left it plugged in and after complete bootup was able to disconnect the external drive, however when I got home and plugged it into my laptop, the external drive shows as being empty

I downloaded and ran a recovery program (http://www.freewareweb.com/cgi-bin/archive.cgi?ID=1672) and it found the system volume information but nothing else.

Can anyone advise me what to do now to try to recover the files? There would be about 350gig total!

Many thanks in advance

Hi

I have an external hard drive that stopped working. I removed it from the casing, and hooked it up with a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter. I was able to access the drive, then copy a few folders. But after that it gave me an I/O error.

It shows up in My Computer as the D: but I get the I/O error when I click on it. In disk management is shows it as "healthy", but says it is not accessible when I try to access it. Also, in the disk management it reports 149.05 GB capacity and 149.05 GB free space. So obviously that can't be right.

I used a file recovery program (specifically Handy Recovery) and the files show up, I can even view the pictures in the software. Of course I have to buy the software to see if it can recover them.

My question...is there a better way or software I should work with? There is 11GB of data on here, mostly pictures I need to recover.

Any ideas on how I can access this drive?

thanks

A:Solved: External HD failed, need files

http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm Try this free one first....Partition Recovery Wizard! but failing that you have to buy their full software at http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/ It works well and in my experience recovered files other programs could not even see.

It started after I purchased an external USB3 HDD. All my previous HDDs were USB 2.0. The moment I plugged it into the USB3 socket for the first time, the computer blue screened. I followed Windows 7's Action Centre advice to install the suggested newer AsMedia USB3 driver, and it seems to have solved the 'BSOD on plug-in' issue. However, when I'm copying files or doing anything with external HDDs, it'll randomly BSOD. This isn't limited to the USB3 device anymore. I used to have the latest AsMedia USB3 driver from the ASUS website.

As attached is the SF zip. Thank you so much for your assistance!

I believe I have unleased a virus by uninstalling AVG. My laptop is a Dell E1505 with XP. I can't load windows but it does try. I have run all the diagnostics and received error codes which Dell tech support implied indicate my HD is probably ok but I have a virus and will need to restore my system. First I would like to back up or save some files but have not a clue how to get that accomplished. I have a dvd (laptop has a burner) and/or a large external HD to save the information on, I just don't know how to actually do this without using the OS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
